The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of D-limonene on decreasing post-operative adhesion in rats and to understand the mechanisms involved. Peritoneal adhesions were induced by creating different incisions and excising a 1 × 1 cm section of the peritoneum. The experimental groups included a sham group, a control group in which peritoneal adhesions were induced without any treatment, and two treatment groups in which animals received D-limonene with dosages of 25 and 50 mg/kg after inducing peritoneal adhesions. Macroscopic examination of adhesions showed that both treatment groups had reduced adhesion bands in comparison to the control group. Immunohistochemical assessment of TGF-ß1, TNF-α, and VEGF on day 14 revealed a significant increment in the level of immunopositive cells for the mentioned markers in the control group, whereas administration of limonene in both doses significantly reduced levels of TGF-ß1, TNF-α, and VEGF (P < 0.05). Induction of peritoneal adhesions in the control group significantly increased TGF-ß1, TNF-α, and VEGF on days 3 and 14 in western blot evaluation, while treatment with limonene significantly reduced TNF-α level on day 14 (P < 0.05). Moreover, VEGF levels in both treatment groups significantly reduced on days 3 and 14. In the control group, a significant increment in the levels of MDA and NO and a notable decline in the levels of GPX, CAT was observed (P < 0.05). Limonene 50 group significantly reduced MDA level and increased GPx and CAT levels on day 14 (P < 0.05). In summary, D-limonene reduced adhesion bands, inflammatory cytokines, angiogenesis, and oxidative stress.

The clinical use of gentamicin (GM) is restricted by its nephrotoxic effects. This study aimed for the first time to elucidate the ameliorative effects of the monoterpene linalool (Lin) against GM-mediated acute kidney injury in rats. A total of thirty-two rats were subdivided into four equal groups: control (saline), Lin (100 mg/kg/day), GM (100 mg/kg/day), and GM + Lin (100 and 100 mg/kg/day). Lin and GM were intraperitoneally administered for 12 days. Our results illustrated that Lin ameliorated GM-mediated renal histopathological abnormalities and reduced serum urea and creatinine levels in rats exposed to GM. Lin treatment mitigated oxidative stress in nephrotoxic animals as manifested by reducing serum and renal levels of malondialdehyde and increasing the activities of serum and renal glutathione peroxidase and renal catalase. Moreover, Lin markedly inhibited GM-triggered inflammation by downregulating NF-κB, iNOS, TNF-α, and IL-1ß and reducing renal myeloperoxidase activity and nitric oxide levels. Interestingly, Lin repressed GM-induced apoptosis, as reflected by a marked downregulation of Bax and caspase-3 expression, concurrent with the upregulation of Bcl2 expression. Finally, Lin administration led to a significant downregulation of TGF-ß expression in nephrotoxic animals. In summary, Lin ameliorated GM-mediated nephrotoxicity in rats, at least through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic activities and by modulating TGF-ß.

The current study examines the effects of linalool in preventing postoperative abdominal adhesions. Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. (1) Sham: in this group, the abdomen was approached, and without any manipulations, it was sutured. (2) Control: rats in this group underwent a surgical procedure to induce adhesions. This involved making three incisions on the right abdominal side and removing a 1×1-cm piece of the peritoneum on the left abdominal side. (3) Treatment groups: these groups underwent the same surgical procedure as the control group to induce adhesions. Animals in these groups received linalool orally with doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively, for a period of 14 days. Moreover, rats in the sham and control groups received normal saline via gavage for 14 days. The evaluation of TNF-α, TGF-ß, VEGF, and caspase 3 was performed using western blot and IHC methods. Furthermore, oxidative stress biomarkers such as MDA, TAC, GSH, and NO were assessed in the peritoneal adhesion tissue. The findings revealed that linalool significantly reduced peritoneal adhesions by reducing TNF-α, TGF-ß, VEGF, and caspase 3 levels. Moreover, MDA concentration was significantly decreased, while NO, TAC, and GSH levels were notably increased. Overall, linalool was effective in preventing adhesion formation and reduced inflammation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, and oxidative stress. Therefore, linalool as a potent antioxidant is suggested for reducing postoperative adhesions in rats.

Gastric ulcers are caused by an imbalance between aggressive and defensive factors. The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles is becoming a new and promising method in the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers. This study was conducted to investigate the protective and antioxidant effects of silver nanoparticles synthesized from Quercus brantii extract (NSQBE) on gastric damage induced by alcohol in rats. In this study, silver nanoparticles were produced by the green synthesis method using oak extract. The structure and morphology of nanoparticles were confirmed by various techniques such as UV-Vis spectroscopy, fourier transforms infrared spectrometer (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and dynamic light scattering )DLS(. For the animal studies, 30 male Wistar rats weighing 200 ± 20 g were randomly selected and divided into five groups (the normal, ethanolic, NSQBE treatment (received doses of 20 and 5 mg/kg), and standard (received a dose of 50 mg/kg of ranitidine) groups. After the rats were euthanized, their stomach was removed. A part of the stomach tissue of rats was used for histopathological studies, and the other part was used to study biochemical parameters such as the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), protein carbonyl oxidation (PCO), malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduced glutathione (GSH) as well as nitric oxide (NO). Our results showed that in the ethanol group, the levels of ROS, MDA, PCO, and serum NO were higher than in the normal group. In addition, reduced GSH, CAT, SOD, tissue NO, gastric mucus, and antioxidant potential were decreased. In rats pretreated with NSQBE and ranitidine, the levels of ROS, MDA, PCO, and serum NO decreased, and the levels of GSH, CAT, SOD, tissue NO, gastric mucus, and antioxidant potential were increased in comparison to the ethanol group. The results of this study showed that silver nanoparticles synthesized using Quercus brantii are a promising approach for the treatment of gastric ulcers.

Objective: Improvement of cell survival is essential for achieving better clinical outcomes in stem cell therapy. We investigated the effects of hyperoxic pre-treatment (HP) on the viability of human adipose stromal stem cells (ASCs).Materials and Methods: MTT and Western blot tests were used to assess cell viability and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins, respectively. For the in-vivo trial, the rats were subjected to renal ischaemia-reperfusion (IR).Results: The results showed that HP could significantly increase the viability of ASCs and decrease apoptotic markers (Bax/BCL-2 ratio and Caspase-3) compared with control cells. There were some additional effects with regard to the improvement of renal structure and function in the animal model. However, the difference between the treated and non-treated transplanted ASCs failed to reach significance.Conclusion: These results suggested that HP could increase the survival of ASCs against oxidative stress-induced damages in the in-vitro condition, but this strategy was not highly effective in renal IR.

This study was designed, for the first time, to examine the possible nephroprotective effects of exogenous glutathione (EGSH) (100 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) on gentamicin-induced acute kidney injury (GM-induced AKI). EGSH reduced renal histopathological changes, inflammatory cell infiltration, and improved renal dysfunction in rats with AKI. EGSH ameliorated GM-induced renal oxidative stress by promoting the renal activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase and diminishing renal malondialdehyde and serum nitric oxide levels. Interestingly, EGSH inhibited intrinsic apoptosis by downregulating Bax and caspase-3 and upregulating Bcl2 in the kidney of rats with AKI. EGSH decreased GM-induced inflammatory response as reflected by a remarkable decrease in the protein expressions of NF-κB-p65, IL-6, TNF-α, and iNOS and a considerable diminish in myeloperoxidase activity. Finally, EGSH markedly declined proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) protein expression in the animals with AKI. In summary, EGSH alleviated AKI in rats intoxicated with GM, partially by inhibiting oxidative stress, NF-κB pathway, and intrinsic apoptosis and regulating PCNA.

This study aims to determine the effects of rosmarinic acid which involved the mechanisms to decrease the postoperative peritoneal adhesion formation in rats. Various incisions and removing a 1 × 1 cm piece of peritoneum was used to induce the peritoneal adhesions. Experimental groups were as follows: 1-Sham group. 2-Control group: Peritoneal adhesions were induced and no treatments were performed. 3-Treatment groups: Following inducing peritoneal adhesions, animals received rosmarinic acid with 50 and 70 mg/kg dosage, respectively. Macroscopic examination of adhesions indicated that adhesion bands were reduced in both treatment groups compared to the control group. Moreover, the adhesion score was decreased in both treatment groups on day 14. Inflammation and fibroblast proliferation were both reduced in the treatment groups on day 14. TGF-ß1, TNF-α, and VEGF were all evaluated by western blot and immunohistochemistry on days 3 and 14. Treatment groups reduced inflammatory cytokines on days 3 and 14. The treatment group with a 70 mg/kg dosage decreased TGF-ß1 and TNF-α levels more than the other treatment group. The administration of rosmarinic acid significantly reduced MDA and increased CAT levels. In conclusion, the rosmarinic acid was effective to reduce the adhesion bands, inflammatory cytokines, angiogenesis, and oxidative stress.

Marek's disease (MD) is a highly contagious, lymphoproliferative poultry disease caused by the oncogenic herpesvirus, serotype 1 Marek's disease virus (MDV-1), or Gallid herpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2). MDV strains have shown a continued evolution of virulence leading to immune failure, and MD cases continue to occur or surge. Meq, the major MDV-1 oncoprotein, induces T-cell neoplastic transformation through several mechanisms including inhibition of apoptosis, cell cycle regulation, and serum-anchorage independent growth. There is no current information on the MDV serotypes and pathotypes circulating in vaccinated commercial farms in Iran, where the birds are vaccinated at the hatchery with GaHV-2 and Meleagrid herpesvirus 1 (MeHV-1) vaccines. This study reports the molecular characterization of a GaHV-2 strain detected in 19 flocks of Iranian layer farms exhibiting MDV-1-like clinical signs and visceral lymphomas. Based on sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the Meq gene, the Iranian GaHV-2 isolates could be divided into two separate clades regarding molecular features. The clade containing strains was closely related to Italian, Indian, and Hungarian virulent isolates, and the clade was related to American very virulent plus (vv+) isolates. For the first time, the MDV-1 virus was characterized by an outbreak in poultry flocks in Iran. Although MDV-1 strains obtained in Iran's present outbreak are presumably related to virulent (v) and vv+ pathotypes based on nucleotide, amino acid, and phylogenetic analysis of the viruses, they are not confirmed so far. Thus, it is highly recommended to perform further analyses to demonstrate the pathotype characteristics in vivo.


Caracterización molecular y análisis filogenético del virus de la enfermedad de Marek en Irán. La enfermedad de Marek (MD) es una enfermedad altamente contagiosa linfoproliferativa en la avicultura causada por el herpesvirus oncogénico, el virus de la enfermedad de Marek de serotipo 1 (MDV-1) o Gallid herpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2). Las cepas del virus de Marek han mostrado una evolución continua de virulencia que conduce a una falla inmunológica, y los casos de Marek continúan ocurriendo o aumentando. El gene Meq, codifica la principal oncoproteína de MDV-1, induce la transformación neoplásica de células T a través de varios mecanismos que incluyen la inhibición de la apoptosis, la regulación del ciclo celular y el crecimiento independiente del anclaje sérico. No hay información actual sobre los serotipos y patotipos del virus de Marek que circulan en las granjas comerciales vacunadas en Irán, donde las aves se vacunan en la planta de incubación con las vacunas GaHV-2 y Meleagrid herpesvirus 1 (MeHV-1). Este estudio reporta la caracterización molecular de una cepa del Gallid herpesvirus 2 detectada en 19 lotes de granjas de aves de postura iraníes que presentaron signos clínicos sugestivos del serotipo 1 del virus de la enfermedad de Marek y linfomas viscerales. Según la secuenciación y el análisis filogenético del gene Meq, los aislamientos iraníes de GaHV-2 podrían dividirse en dos clados separados con respecto a las características moleculares. El clado que contenía las cepas estaba estrechamente relacionado con los aislados virulentos de Italia, India y de Hungria y el clado estaba relacionado con los aislados americanos muy virulentos plus (vv+). Por primera vez, el serotipo 1 del virus de la enfermedad de Marek se caracterizó por un brote en parvadas avícolas en Irán. Aunque las cepas del virus de Marek, serotipo 1 obtenidas en el brote actual de Irán están presuntamente relacionadas con patotipos virulentos (v) y muy virulentos plus según el análisis de nucleótidos, aminoácidos y filogenético de los virus, hasta el momento no se han confirmado. Por lo tanto, se recomienda realizar más análisis para demostrar las características del patotipo in vivo.

In this research, the effects of betaine on testicular ischemia-reperfusion were evaluated. Forty rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of sham, torsion/detorsion (TD), torsion/detorsion with two different dosage of betaine 200 mg/kg, and 300 mg/kg, respectively. At the end of the experiment, the testosterone concentration, sperm motility, concentration and vitality, oxidative stress biomarkers including Malondialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Catalase (CAT), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were assessed. Moreover, histopathological parameters including seminiferous tubules diameter (STD), seminiferous epithelium thickness (SET), spermatogonia nuclei diameter (SpND), Sertoli cell nuclei diameter (StND) and miotic index were evaluated. The testosterone concentration altered during torsion/detorsion and betaine could increase slightly the testosterone concentration after 15 days. Sperm motility and vitality significantly increased in the betaine treated groups compared to the TD group on days 3 and 15. Among oxidative stress biomarkers, only CAT on day 3 and GPx on day 15 were significantly higher in the betaine groups compared to the TD group. Among histopathological parameters an increase in the STD and SET in betaine-200 and betaine-300 groups were observed on 15th day of post-surgery, compared to the TD group. These findings indicate that betaine can ameliorate testicular damages triggered by torsion/detorsion.

Ocular tumors are rarely seen in farm animals. Iridociliary epithelial tumors are the second most common tumor of the eye in dogs and cats, but there is just one report of this tumor in sheep. This case report described the history, clinical signs, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings, and surgical management of an iridociliary adenoma tumor in a 3-year-old Iranian Shaal sheep with signs of anorexia, depression, loss of vision, and a mass covering the left eye. The mass had protruded from the left eye globe but had not penetrated the periocular tissues. Enucleation was performed to excise the tumor. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Alcian blue staining methods were done for the mass, but the result for both of them was negative. Slides were also immunostained for antibodies against cytokeratin AE1/AE3, vimentin, and S-100 protein. The results were positive for vimentin but negative for cytokeratin and S-100. According to the results of histopathology and immunohistochemistry, the type of tumor was diagnosed as iridociliary adenoma. To our knowledge, it was the second report of the iridociliary tumor in the sheep and the first report of this tumor in the Iranian Shaal breed.

Haemosporidian parasites are responsible for anemia, acute tissue degeneration, and depopulation in wild birds. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of haemosporidians and also morphologic and molecular evaluation of tissue stages of Haemoproteus sp. in common buzzards (Buteo buteo). Eleven free-living common buzzards were referred to the Avian Clinic of Veterinary School of Lorestan University with lethargy, weight loss, and ataxia. Gametocytes of Leucocytozoon buteonis were found in blood smears of six (54.5 %) birds, while one had simultaneous infection with blood stages of Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon. During histopathological examinations, exo-erythrocytic stages of the genus Haemoproteus were seen in the lung and kidney of a dead bird. This study is the first report of exo-erythrocytic infection of Haemoproteus in common buzzards. Molecular assays confirmed the infection of Haemoproteus sp. (lineage BUTBUT15) in tissue samples. Phylogenetic analysis using cytochrome b gene suggested that BUTBUT15 was more closely related to the lineages isolated from the family Falconidae in contrast to the Accipitridae.

This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and protective effect of E. persicus leaf hydroalcoholic extract (EPE) in preventing gastric ulcers induced by ethanol in rats. Wistar rats weighing 180-220 g were randomly divided into five groups. These groups included negative control (normal) group, positive control (ethanolic) group, comparative control (ranitidine recipient) group, group recipient the dose of 250 mg/kg plant extract, and group recipient the dose of 500 mg/kg plant extract. One hour after gavage of the drug and extract, the gastric ulcer was induced by feeding 1 ml of 96% ethanol to each animal except the rats of the negative control group. After one hour, the rats were killed, and their stomachs were separated. Then, the gastric Ulcer index (UI), pH, oxidative stress parameters, and histopathological changes in the stomach of all groups were measured. Pre-treatment of ethanol-induced rats with the EPE reduced (P < 0.05) the ulcer index and gastric juice pH, compared to ethanolic group rats. Furthermore, pre-treatment with EPE at a dose-dependent manner, alleviated the gastric oxidative stress injury in rats through increase the activity of CAT, tissue NO· and GSH levels. EPE also was able to decrease the levels of ROS, MDA, PCO and serum NO·. According to the results, it can be concluded that pre-treatment with EPE prevents the formation of gastric ulcers caused by ethanol, which can be attributed to the antioxidant activity of plant polyphenols compounds.

BACKGROUND: One of the most prevalent postoperative complications is believed to be intra-abdominal peritoneal adhesions, which is followed by several complications. Several adhesion prevention products have been examined, yet none of them were found to be completely effective. The current research is conducted to evaluate the beneficial effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza hydroalcoholic extract in inhibiting postoperative peritoneal adhesions in rats. METHODS: Forty rats were randomly classified into five equal groups (n = 8): 1) the normal group did not undergo surgical operations, 2) the control group in which the adhesion was induced, and which did not receive any treatment, 3) distilled water group that received distilled water, and 4,5) treatment groups treated with 1 and 5% of Salvia miltiorrhiza hydroalcoholic extract. The rats were euthanized 14 days following the surgery and the macroscopic score, the microscopic score of granulomatous inflammation and granulation tissue formation, IHC markers (vimentin, CD31, IL-1ß, COX-2, and iNOS), and oxidative stress biomarkers (MDA, GPx, CAT, and TAC) were assessed in the experimental groups of the study. RESULTS: The difference between the control group and other groups for the adhesions macroscopic score, microscopic score, IHC markers, and oxidative stress biomarkers was significant (p < 0.05). Distilled water had no protective effect on the formation of peritoneal adhesions. Salvia miltiorrhiza treatment in two different doses significantly reduced macroscopic and microscopic scores, MDA concentration, Vimentin, IL-1ß, COX-2, and iNOS compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The levels of GPx, CAT, and TAC in the treatment groups increased significantly compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Our findings revealed that a higher dose of Salvia miltiorrhiza was more effective in reducing peritoneal adhesions, proinflammatory and mesenchymal cell markers, and oxidative stress. CONCLUSIONS: Salvia miltiorrhiza extract, owing to its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, could effectively reduce peritoneal adhesions. Therefore, Salvia miltiorrhiza is recommended to be used as an effective anti-peritoneal post-operative adhesive agent.

Clinical application of gentamicin (GM) is well known to be associated with the development of acute kidney injury (AKI). This study was the first to investigate the possible protective effects of D-limonene (D-lim) on AKI following GM administration in rats. 32 rats arranged in four groups (n = 8): (1) the control group received saline intraperitoneally (0.5 ml/day) and orally (0.5 ml/day), (2) the D-lim group received D-lim (100 mg/kg) orally and saline (0.5 ml/day) intraperitoneally, (3) the GM group received GM (100 mg/kg/day) intraperitoneally and saline (0.5 ml/day) orally, and (4) the treated group received intraperitoneal GM (100 mg/kg) and oral D-lim (100 mg/kg). All treatments were performed daily for 12 consecutive days. Results revealed that D-lim ameliorated GM-induced AKI, oxidative stress, mitochondrial apoptosis, and inflammation. D-lim showed nephroprotective effects as reflected by the decrease in serum urea and creatinine and improvement of renal histopathological changes. D-lim alleviated GM-induced oxidative stress by increasing the activities of renal catalase, serum and renal glutathione peroxidase, and renal superoxide dismutase and decreasing renal malondialdehyde and serum nitric oxide levels. Intriguingly, D-lim suppressed mitochondrial apoptosis by considerably downregulating Bax and caspase-3 (Casp-3) mRNA and protein expressions and markedly enhancing Bcl2 mRNA and protein expressions. Furthermore, D-lim significantly decreases GM-induced inflammatory response through downregulation of NF-κB, IL-6, and TNF-α mRNA and/or protein expressions and decrease in renal myeloperoxidase activity. Finally, D-lim remarkably downregulated PCNA protein expression in the treated group compared with the GM group. In brief, this study showed that D-lim alleviated AKI following GM administration in rats, partially through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic activities as well as downregulation of PCNA expression.

Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease concomitant with oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of betaine against asthma-induced oxidative stress in experimentally animal model. 32 BALB/C mice were divided into four equal groups as: control, asthma, prednisolone and betaine groups. 100 µl of the solution (Ova albumin (OVA, 400 µg and AL(OH)3 gel in 1 ml of phosphate buffer) was injected intraperitoneally to each mouse on days 0, 7, 14 and 21 and sensitized with OVA drop, three times a week from days 27 until 84 in asthma, prednisolone and betaine groups. Prednisolone (3 mg/kg) and betaine (1% of the total diet) were administered at day 27 to 84 as orally once daily and vehicle to controls and asthma group. Sera were collected for IgE detection and lung tissue was taken for histopathology assessment. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and glutathione content (GSH) as well as malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration as lipid peroxidation marker were also measured in the liver and kidney tissues. Pathological changes of the lung tissue were observed in the asthma and prednisolone groups. Prednisolone also caused significant increase level of anti-OVA IgE. The GPx activity increased significantly in the liver and kidney of asthmatic group when compared to the control and prednisolone groups. Liver MDA as lipid peroxidation marker was also significantly higher in the prednisolone-treated mice when compared to the other groups. Although the CAT and SOD activities as well as GSH content increased in the betaine and prednisolone-treated mice, these enhancements were not statically significant. Predinsolone as first choice in asthma treatment showed some oxidative properties. In contrast, betaine improved airway inflammation of lung tissue which may be associated with the antioxidant properties of betaine. This study provides a potential promising effect of betaine for treatment of asthma in future studies.

This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in free-range chickens from Khorramabad, western Iran, and also to compare the performance of direct microscopy and semi-nested PCR in mice bioassayed with tissues from seropositive chickens. We investigated 97 serum samples from free-range chickens, using the modified agglutination test (MAT). Tissues from all seropositive chickens (MAT ≥ 1:10) were bioassayed in mice. All inoculated mice were examined by direct microscopy and a semi-nested PCR targeting the 529 bp repeat element (RE) of the parasite. Anti-T. gondii antibodies were detected in 21.6% of chicken sera. Eighteen of 21 (85.7%) seropositive chickens were positive in mouse bioassay using molecular DNA detection. However, biological forms of the parasite were isolated only from 11 (52.3%) seropositive chickens. Compared with semi-nested PCR, the sensitivity of direct microscopy was 62.1%. It can be concluded that although direct microscopy is a rapid and specific method for the detection of T. gondii, it does not detect the parasite in all experimentally infected mice. The low sensitivity of direct microscopy highlights the need for molecular techniques, such as RE-based semi-nested PCR, to increase the sensitivity of the mouse bioassay.

Osteofibrous dysplasia is a rare and benign nonneoplastic condition of unknown etiology in humans and mammals. An adult female cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) was presented with the following problems: a soft tissue mass on the left frontal area of the head that extended over the left eye, anorexia, lethargy, and emaciation. Computed tomographic imaging and ultrasonography revealed a soft tissue opacity in the left cranial area of the head with multifocal heterogeneous opacities and foci of mineralization. Cytological, histopathological, and immunohistochemistry examinations were performed on biopsy samples from tissue collected from the mass. Following surgical removal of the cranial mass the patient was treated with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and antibiotic medication. The surgical site healed with no complications and through follow-up examinations there were no signs of reoccurrence of the abnormal tissue for 2 months. Through cytological and histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry testing of the submitted tissue, a diagnosis of osteofibrous dysplasia was determined.

PURPOSE: Pregnancy is the most intense physiological alteration in energy metabolism that women experience in their lifetime. Liver and kidney are the two most susceptible organs to energy metabolism. Diabetes is well-defined as a syndrome interfering with energy metabolism triggered by impaired blood glucose adjustment. Herein, protective effects of betaine on liver and kidney were evaluated in animal model of diabetic pregnancy. METHODS: 32 dams were assigned into 4 equal groups: Control (C), Betaine (B, 1.5% w/w of total diet daily), Diabetic pregnancy (D), and Diabetic pregnancy treated with betaine (D + B). After physiological delivery, HbA1c concentration in whole blood, serum hepatic and renal biomarkers such as AST, ALT, ALP, urea and creatinine were measured. Also, liver and kidney tissue samples were examined under a light microscope. RESULTS: Diabetic pregnancy was found to be accompanied by increased HbA1c level, concentration of hepatic and renal biomarkers in blood samples, and a gamut of alterations such as apoptotic cells, biliary hyperplasia, sinusoidal dilation, basement membrane thickening, and Bowman's capsule dilation as observed in histopathological sections of the D group. Betaine supplementation significantly decreased AST, ALT, urea and creatinine in the D + B group compared to D group. Also, most of pathologic microscopic alterations were attenuated under betaine treatment in D + B group compared to D group. CONCLUSION: Findings of the current paper, for the first time, provided evidence regarding protective effects of betaine on liver and kidney function against maternal diabetes in an animal model of STZ-induced diabetic pregnancy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In addition to hepato-cardiotoxicity, doxorubicin (DOX) also induces nephrotoxicity which is considered as the limiting factor for this drug in cancer therapy. The effect of carvacrol, the main active ingredient of Satureja khuzistanica Jamzad essential oil (SKEO), in the amelioration of DOX- induced cardiotoxicity is well established. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible protective effects of SKEO against DOX-induced nephrotoxicity. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: SKEO was intraperitoneally administered at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg to male Wistar rats for 12 consecutive days. Five groups of animals including negative control (saline), vehicle (Tween® 20), SKEO50, DOX (at 8th day of treatment), and SKEO50 + DOX were assessed. FINDINGS/RESULTS: Creatinine, urea concentrations, and caspase-3 activity significantly elevated in the serum of DOX treated group in contrast to other groups after injection of a single dose of DOX (20 mg/kg i.p.), however, SKEO reduced glutathione peroxidase and caspase-3 activity against other groups while SKEO + DOX was also significantly reduced caspase-3 activity against DOX group. Other biochemical markers changes were not significant. Immunohistochemical assessment unveiled that SKEO + DOX improved the activity of Bcl-2 family proteins (Bax and Bcl-2) and caspase-8 protein to the advantage of cell survival in both intrinsic mitochondrial and extrinsic pathway down streamed to the terminal caspase-3 apoptotic molecule. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: It was concluded that SKEO could have influential effects against apoptosis induced by DOX, but not improperly ameliorate oxidative stress.

A 10-year-old, male Rottweilerdog was presented to Small Animal Hospital of Tehran University with a history of lethargy, anorexia, weight loss, vomiting, polyuria, polydipsia and blindness. The dog showed symptoms of depression, high body temperature (39.2 ˚C), tachypnea (40 breaths min-1) and cachexia. In ophthalmic examination, bilateral hyphema (hemmorrahge in anterior chamber of the eye) and blindness were detected. The pulse of the animal was normal (90 beats min-1) and obvious general lymphadenopathy was determined. Lymph nodes were firm, freely movable, and painless on palpation. Initial differential diagnosis of lymphoma included lymphoma, metastatic neoplasia, lymphoid hyperplasia, and lymphadenitis. In hematology and cytology tests, this case was suspected to lymphoma. Immunohistochemical staining of neoplastic lymph node revealed that nearly 20.00 - 25.00% of neoplastic cells were strongly positive for anti CD3, whereas they were negative for both CD20 and CD79a. According to the microscopic and immunohistochemical findings, a diagnosis of T cell lymphoma was made. The present report is the first case of multicentric lymphoma with ocular metastasis in a dog in Iran.
