RESUMO

Chinese diesel trucks are the main contributors to NOx and particulate matter (PM) vehicle emissions. An increase in diesel trucks could aggravate air pollution and damage human health. The Chinese government has recently implemented a series of emission control technologies and measures for air quality improvement. This paper summarizes recent control technologies and measures for diesel truck emissions in China and introduces the comprehensive application of control technologies and measures in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and surrounding regions. Remote online monitoring technology has been adopted according to the China VI standard for heavy-duty diesel trucks, and control measures such as transportation structure adjustment and heavy pollution enterprise classification control continue to support the battle action plan for pollution control. Perspectives and suggestions are provided for promoting pollution control and supervision of diesel truck emissions: adhere to the concept of overall management and control, vigorously promote the application of systematic and technological means in emission monitoring, continuously facilitate cargo transportation structure adjustment and promote new energy freight vehicles. This paper aims to accelerate the implementation of control technologies and measures throughout China. China is endeavouring to control diesel truck exhaust pollution. China is willing to cooperate with the world to protect the global ecological environment.

In this study, we investigate the effect of neuregulin 4 (NRG4) on podocyte damage in a mouse model of diabetic nephropathy (DN) and we elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. In vivo experiments were conducted using a C57BL/6 mouse model of DN to determine the effect of NRG4 on proteinuria and podocyte injury, and in vitro experiments were performed with conditionally immortalized mouse podocytes treated with high glucose and NRG4 to assess the protective effects of NRG4 on podocyte injury. Autophagy-related protein levels and related signaling pathways were evaluated both in vivo and in vitro. The involvement of the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway was detected using chloroquine or AMPK inhibitors. The results showed that the AMPK/mTOR pathway was involved in the protective roles of NRG4 against high glucose-mediated podocyte injury. Also, NRG4 significantly decreased albuminuria in DN mice. PAS staining indicated that NRG4 mitigated glomerular volume and mesangium expansion in DN mice. Consistently, western blot and RT-PCR analyses confirmed that NRG4 decreased the expression of pro-fibrotic molecules in the glomeruli of DN mice. The immunofluorescence results showed that NRG4 retained expression of podocin and nephrin, whereas transmission electron microscopy revealed that NRG4 alleviated podocyte injury. In DN mice, NRG4 decreased podocyte apoptosis and increased expression of nephrin and podocin, while decreasing the expression of desmin and HIF1α. Overall, NRG4 improved albuminuria, glomerulosclerosis, glomerulomegaly, and hypoxia in DN mice. The in vitro experiments showed that NRG4 inhibited HG-induced podocyte injury and apoptosis. Furthermore, autophagy of the glomeruli decreased in DN mice, but reactivated following NRG4 intervention. NRG4 intervention was found to partially activate autophagy via the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway. Consequently, when the AMPK/mTOR pathway was suppressed or autophagy was inhibited, the beneficial effects of NRG4 intervention on podocyte injury were diminished. These results indicate that NRG4 intervention attenuates podocyte injury and apoptosis by promoting autophagy in the kidneys of DN mice, in part, by activating the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway.

Recent developments in semiconductor-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have achieved numerous advancements, primarily centered on the chemical mechanism. However, the role of the electromagnetic (electromagnetic mechanism) contribution in advancing semiconductor SERS substrates is still underexplored. In this study, we developed a SERS substrate based on densely aligned α-type MoO3 (α-MoO3) semiconductor nanorods (NRs) with rectangular parallelepiped ribbon shapes with width measuring several hundred nanometers. These structural attributes strongly affect light transport in the visible range by multiple light scattering generated in narrow gaps between NRs, contributing to the improvement of SERS performance. Engineering the nanostructure and chemical composition of NRs realized high SERS sensitivity with an enhancement factor of 2 × 108 and a low detection limit of 5 × 10-9 M for rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules, which was achieved by the stoichiometric NR sample with strong light scattering. Furthermore, it was observed that the scattering length becomes significantly shorter compared with the excitation wavelength in the visible regime, which indicates that light transport is strongly modified by mesoscopic interference related to Anderson localization. Additionally, high electric fields were found to be localized on the NR surfaces, depending on the excitation wavelength, similar to the SERS response. These optical phenomena indicate that electromagnetic excitation processes play an important role in plasmon-free SERS platforms based on α-MoO3 NRs. We postulate that our study provides important guidance for designing effective EM-based SERS-active semiconductor substrates.

OBJECTIVES: Periodontitis is a common oral disease that is aggravated by occlusal trauma. Fibrin is a protein that participates in blood clotting and is involved in several human diseases. The deposition of fibrin in periodontal tissues can induce periodontitis, while mechanical forces may regulate the degradation of fibrin. Our study investigated how occlusal trauma aggravating periodontitis through regulating the plasminogen/plasmin system and fibrin deposition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 84 C57BL/6 mice in which periodontitis was induced with or without occlusal trauma. Micro-computed tomography was used to assess bone resorption. Fibrin, fibrinogen, plasminogen, plasmin, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), and urokinase plasminogen activator (u-PA) levels were measured using Frazer-Lendrum staining, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, and immunohistochemistry staining. RESULTS: Occlusal trauma aggravated inflammation and bone resorption. The periodontitis group showed significant fibrin deposition. Occlusal trauma increased fibrin deposition and neutrophil aggregation. The periodontitis with occlusal trauma group had decreased fibrinogen, t-PA, and u-PA expression and plasmin and fibrin degradation product levels, as well as increased plasminogen levels. CONCLUSION: Occlusal trauma promotes excessive fibrin deposition by suppressing the plasminogen/plasmin system, thus exacerbating periodontitis.

In recent years, inflammatory disorders have emerged as a significant concern for human health. Through ongoing research on anti-inflammatory agents, alpinetin has shown promising anti-inflammatory properties, including involvement in epigenetic modification pathways. As a crucial regulator of epigenetic modifications, Mecp2 may play a role in modulating the epigenetic effects of alpinetin, potentially impacting its anti-inflammatory properties. To test this hypothesis, two key components, p65 (a member of NF-KB family) and p300 (a type of co-activator), were screened by the expression profiling microarray, which exhibited a strong correlation with the intensity of LPS stimulation in mouse macrophages. Meanwhile, alpinetin demonstrates the anti-inflammatory properties through its ability to disrupt the synthesis of p65 and its interaction with promoters of inflammatory genes, yet it did not exhibit similar effects on p300. Additionally, Mecp2 can inhibit the binding of p300 by attaching to the methylated inflammatory gene promoter induced by alpinetin, leading to obstacles in promoter acetylation and subsequently impacting the binding of p65, ultimately enhancing the anti-inflammatory capabilities of alpinetin. Similarly, in a sepsis mouse model, it was observed that homozygotes overexpressing Mecp2 showed a greater reduction in organ damage and improved survival rates compared to heterozygotes when administered by alpinetin. However, blocking the expression of DNA methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) resulted in the loss of Mecp2's anti-inflammatory assistance. In conclusion, Mecp2 may augment the anti-inflammatory effects of alpinetin through epigenetic 'crosstalk', highlighting the potential efficacy of a combined therapeutic strategy involving Mecp2 and alpinetin for anti-inflammatory intervention.

Background: Immunochemotherapy was an emerging neoadjuvant treatment mode that can potentially benefit patients with esophageal carcinoma, but its synergistic mechanism and impact on the tumor immune microenvironment were still unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcomes of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (nCT) and neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy (nICT) in tumor microenvironment (TME) remodeling among patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and to evaluate the prognostic value of immune-related biomarkers and clinicopathological characteristics. Methods: Patients with locally advanced ESCC who underwent neoadjuvant therapy followed by esophagectomy at the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University between December 2019 and March 2022 were enrolled in this retrospective study. We examined TME features and immune antigen-related biomarkers before and after neoadjuvant therapy. Logistic and Cox regression model were used to evaluate the correlation between these factors and other clinical features and outcomes. Results: A total of 50 eligible participants were analyzed, including 31 males (62%), 25 patients of ≥65 years old, 4/28/18 of upper/middle/lower thoracic cancer, 25/17/8 of poor/moderate/high tumor differentiation, 8/42 of cT1+2/T3+4 stages and 30/20 of cN0/N+ stages. In the entire cohort, the rates of pathological complete response (pCR) and major pathological response (MPR) were 18% and 30%, respectively. pCR rates were 7.1% and 22.2% (χ2=0.699; P=0.40) MPR rates were 7.1% and 38.9% (χ2=4.837; P=0.03) in the nCT and nICT groups, respectively. Compared with the non-pCR patients, the pCR patients had a higher baseline programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) tumor proportion score (TPS) positive expression rate (16.7% vs. 77.8%, χ2=13.089; P<0.001). Following neoadjuvant therapy, the expression rates of PD-L1, CD3+ T cells, and CD8+ T cells in the tumor tissue was higher in the nICT group compared to the nCT group (P<0.05). Deficient expression of mismatch repair (MMR) genes was only observed in one patient (2%). Among patient-related biomarkers, lymphocyte and neutrophil counts decreased after treatment, with no significant changes in the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio or platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Cox regression analysis showed that pretreatment, well-differentiated tumors and positive PD-L1 status were positive predictors of MPR (P<0.05). MPR was an independent predictor of disease-free survival (DFS) (P=0.03). Conclusions: Compared to nCT, nICT could more significantly upregulates PD-L1 TPS, PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS), CD3+ T cells, and CD8+ T cells. Pretreatment tumor differentiation and PD-L1 TPS level could be predictive of MPR. Our findings suggested that the combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy may be more beneficial for activating anti-tumor immunity in the TME.

Endocervical gastric-type adenocarcinoma (GAS) is an aggressive type of endocervical mucinous adenocarcinoma characterized as being unrelated to human papillomavirus (HPV) and resistant to chemo/radiotherapy. In this study, we investigated the histology, immunohistochemistry patterns and molecular characteristics in a large cohort of GAS (n=62). Histologically, the majority of GAS cases exhibited a distinct morphology resembling gastric glands, although two exceptional cases exhibited HPV-associated adenocarcinoma (HPVA) morphology, while retaining the characteristic histology of GAS at the invasive front. By immunohistochemistry, Claudin18.2 emerged as a highly sensitive and specific marker for GAS. Additionally, the strong expression of Claudin18.2 in GAS patients indicated the potential of anti-Claudin18.2 therapy in the treatment of GAS. Other immunohistochemistry markers, including Muc6, p16, p53, Pax8, ER and PR, may provide additional diagnostic clues for GAS. Quantitative methylation analysis revealed that the overexpression of Claudin18.2 in GAS was governed by the hypomethylation of the CLDN18.2 promoter CpG islands. To further elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms of GAS and its relationship with gastric adenocarcinoma, we performed whole exome sequencing (WES) on 11 GAS and 9 gastric adenocarcinomas. TP53, CDKN2A, STK11 and TTN emerged as the most frequently mutated genes in GAS. Mutations in these genes primarily affected cell growth, cell cycle regulation, senescence and apoptosis. Intriguingly, these top mutated genes in GAS were also commonly mutated in gastric and pancreaticobiliary adenocarcinomas. Regarding germline variants, we identified a probably pathogenic variant in SPINK1, a gene linked to hereditary pancreatic cancer syndrome, in one GAS sample. This finding suggests a potential pathogenic link between pancreatic cancers and GAS. Overall, GAS exhibits molecular characteristics that resemble those observed in gastric and pancreaticobiliary adenocarcinomas, thereby lending support to the aggressive nature of GAS compared to HPVA.

Low-dose X-CT scanning method effectively reduces radiation hazards, however, reducing the radiation dose will introduce noise and artifacts during the projection process, resulting in a decrease in the quality of the reconstructed image. To address this problem, we combined 2D variational modal decomposition and dictionary learning. We proposed a low-dose CT (LDCT) image denoising algorithm based on an improved K-SVD algorithm with image decomposition. The dictionary obtained by K-SVD training lacks consideration of image structure information. To address this problem, we employ the two-dimensional variational mode decomposition (2D-VMD) method to decompose the image into distinct modal components. Through the adaptive learning of dictionaries based on the characteristics of each modal component, independent denoising processing is applied to each component, avoiding the loss of structural and detailed information in the image. In addition, we introduce the regularized orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm (ROMP) and dictionary atom optimization method to improve the sparse representation ability of the dictionary and reduce the impact of noise atoms on denoising performance. The experiments show that the proposed method outperforms other denoising methods regarding peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity. The proposed method maintains the denoised image details and structural information while removing LDCT image noise and artifacts. The image quality after denoising is significantly improved and facilitates more accurate detection and analysis of lesion areas.

To ensure optimal use of images while preserving privacy, it is necessary to partition the shared image into public and private areas, with public areas being openly accessible and private areas being shared in a controlled and privacy-preserving manner. Current works only facilitate image-level sharing and use common cryptographic algorithms. To ensure efficient, controlled, and privacy-preserving image sharing at the area level, this paper proposes an image partition security-sharing mechanism based on blockchain and chaotic encryption, which mainly includes a fine-grained access control method based on Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) and an image-specific chaotic encryption scheme. The proposed fine-grained access control method employs smart contracts based on the ABAC model to achieve automatic access control for private areas. It employs a Cuckoo filter-based transaction retrieval technique to enhance the efficiency of smart contracts in retrieving security attributes and policies on the blockchain. The proposed chaotic encryption scheme generates keys based on the private areas' security attributes, largely reducing the number of keys required. It also provides efficient encryption with vector operation acceleration. The security analysis and performance evaluation were conducted comprehensively. The results show that the proposed mechanism has lower time overhead than current works as the number of images increases.

Vehicle organic gas emissions are becoming an increasingly significant pollution source in many cities, leading to serious negative impacts on human health and the environment. However, interest in vehicular emissions is currently mostly focused on the emission characteristics of regulated gas, while little information is available on the systematic overview of organic gas emissions, particularly under different conditions. This review classifies the current status of research and control measures regarding organic gas emissions from light-duty vehicles. The key factors influencing tailpipe and evaporative emissions, including temperature, fuel composition, vehicle mileage, driving conditions, and road conditions, are identified. Building upon this review, we conducted a case study to comprehensively assess the impact of temperature and fuel on organic gas emissions. Looking ahead, future research on organic gas emissions from motor vehicles could delve deeper into the component characteristics, evaporative emissions, and model applications. Better understanding the effects of crucial factors on organic gas emissions from vehicles would aid in effectively managing and regulating tailpipe and evaporative emissions, thereby improving atmospheric air quality.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diabetes is one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD). As high as 29 % of patients with diabetes develop atherosclerosis. Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (VSMCs) are a key mediator in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, generating pro-inflammatory and proliferative characteristics in atherosclerotic lesions. METHODS: We used human atherosclerotic samples, developed diabetes-induced atherosclerotic mice, and generated loss of function and gain of function in Klotho human aortic smooth muscle cells to investigate the function of Klotho in atherosclerosis. RESULTS: We found that Klotho expression is decreased in smooth muscle actin-positive cells in patients with diabetes and atherosclerosis. Consistent with human data, we found that Apoe knockout mice with streptozotocin-induced diabetes fed on a high-fat diet showed decreased expression of Klotho in SMCs. Additionally, these mice showed increased expression of TGF-ß, MMP9, phosphorylation of ERK and Akt. Further, we utilized primary Human Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (HASMCs) with d-glucose under dose-response and in time-dependent conditions to study the role of Klotho in these cells. Klotho gain of function and loss of function studies showed that Klotho inversely regulated the expression of atherosclerotic markers TGF-ß, MMP2, MMP9, and Fractalkine. Further, High Glucose (HG) induced Akt, and ERK1/2 phosphorylation were enhanced or mitigated by endogenous Klotho deficiency or its overexpression respectively. PI3K/Akt and MAPK/ERK inhibition partially abolished the HG-induced upregulation of TGF-ß, MMP2, MMP9, and Fractalkine. Additionally, Klotho knockdown increased the proliferation of HASMCs and enhanced α-SMA and TGF-ß expression. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results indicate that local vascular Klotho is involved in diabetes-induced atherosclerosis, which is via PI3K/Akt and ERK1/2-dependent signaling pathways.

Most logit-based knowledge distillation methods transfer soft labels from the teacher model to the student model via Kullback-Leibler divergence based on softmax, an exponential normalization function. However, this exponential nature of softmax tends to prioritize the largest class (target class) while neglecting smaller ones (non-target classes), leading to an oversight of the non-target classes's significance. To address this issue, we propose Non-Target-Class-Enhanced Knowledge Distillation (NTCE-KD) to amplify the role of non-target classes both in terms of magnitude and diversity. Specifically, we present a magnitude-enhanced Kullback-Leibler (MKL) divergence multi-shrinking the target class to enhance the impact of non-target classes in terms of magnitude. Additionally, to enrich the diversity of non-target classes, we introduce a diversity-based data augmentation strategy (DDA), further enhancing overall performance. Extensive experimental results on the CIFAR-100 and ImageNet-1k datasets demonstrate that non-target classes are of great significance and that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance across a wide range of teacher-student pairs.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common benign disease causing voiding dysfunction in middle-aged and elderly men. the current "gold standard" for surgical treatment is transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) is routinely given for 3 to 5 days after operation. However, this may induce bladder spasm. Bladder spasm not only brings physical and mental pain to patients, delaying the postoperative recovery process, but it also increases the medical economic burden. Therefore, it is important to take active measures to effectively warn and deal with bladder spasm. The color of the drainage fluid is an important indicator and requires close observation during CBI, as it can reflect real-time postoperative bleeding. When the color of drainage fluid is abnormal, effective measures should be undertaken. Grading nursing intervention divides patients into different conditions according to their possible changes, and then recommends targeted nursing intervention. Existing studies have formulated CBI programs from the perspective of quantifying the relationship between drainage fluid color and irrigation speed, but have yet to incorporate bladder spasm prevention and control levels or design corresponding grading nursing intervention programs according to different drainage fluid colors. This study aimed to construct the risk warning classification and intervention plan of bladder spasm under the guidance of CBI speed adjusting card after TURP. Methods: Based on the rate adjustment card of CBI after TURP, we formulated the first draft of an early warning classification of risk in bladder spasm and its intervention plans by combining methods suggested from a literature search with semi-structured interviews and results from 2 rounds of correspondence inquiries with 28 experts by the Delphi method. We further screened and revised grading standards and measures. Results: The positive coefficients of experts in 2 rounds of correspondence inquiries were both 100%, the authority coefficients were both 0.952, and the Kendall harmony coefficients were 0.238 and 0.326, respectively (P<0.01). In the second round of correspondence inquiries, the coefficient of variation of expert opinions was 0.000-0.154, and the coefficient of variation of all items was <0.25. Finally, a 3-level risk warning classification standard and 23 nursing measures for CBI complicated by bladder spasm was constructed. Conclusions: The early warning classification of risk in bladder spasm and its intervention plans guided by rate adjustment card of CBI after TURP are scientific and feasible, and can provide a basis and guidance for effective and standardized CBI in patients after TURP.

Introduction: This study aims to analyze the clinical features of Kawasaki disease (KD) shock syndrome (KDSS) and explore its early predictors. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was used to analyze KD cases from February 2016 to October 2023 in our hospital. A total of 28 children with KDSS and 307 children who did not develop KDSS were included according to matching factors. Baseline information, clinical manifestations, and laboratory indicators were compared between the two groups. Indicators of differences were analyzed based on univariate analysis; binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors for KDSS, and then receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to establish a predictive score model for KDSS. Results: Elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR) and decreased fibrinogen (FIB) and Na were independent risk factors for KDSS; the scoring of the above risk factors according to the odds ratio value eventually led to the establishment of a new scoring system: NLR ≥ 7.99 (6 points), FIB ≤ 5.415 g/L (1 point), Na ≤ 133.05 mmol/L (3 points), and a total score of ≥3.5 points were high-risk factors for progression to KDSS; otherwise, they were considered to be low-risk factors. Conclusion: Children with KD with NLR ≥ 7.99, FIB ≤ 5.415 g/L, and Na ≤ 133.05 mmol/L, and those with two or more of the above risk factors, are more likely to progress to KDSS, which helps in early clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been identified as a novel gasotransmitter and a substantial antioxidant that can activate various cellular targets to regulate physiological and pathological processes in mammals. However, under physiological conditions, it remains unclear whether it is involved in regulating cardiomyocyte (CM) proliferation during postnatal development in mice. This study mainly aimed to evaluate the role of H2S in postnatal CM proliferation and its regulating molecular mechanisms. We found that sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, the most widely used H2S donor, 50-200 µM) increased neonatal mouse primary CM proliferation in a dose-dependent manner in vitro. Consistently, exogenous administration of H2S also promoted CM proliferation and increased the total number of CMs at postnatal 7 and 14 days in vivo. Moreover, we observed that the protein expression of SIRT1 was significantly upregulated after NaHS treatment. Inhibition of SIRT1 with EX-527 or si-SIRT1 decreased CM proliferation, while enhancement of the activation of SIRT1 with SRT1720 promoted CM proliferation. Meanwhile, pharmacological and genetic blocking of SIRT1 repressed the effect of NaHS on CM proliferation. Taken together, these results reveal that H2S plays a promotional role in proliferation of CMs in vivo and in vitro and SIRT1 is required for H2S-mediated CM proliferation, which indicates that H2S may be a potential modulator for heart development in postnatal time window.

Optofluidic time-stretch imaging flow cytometry (OTS-IFC) provides a suitable solution for high-precision cell analysis and high-sensitivity detection of rare cells due to its high-throughput and continuous image acquisition. However, transferring and storing continuous big data streams remains a challenge. In this study, we designed a high-speed streaming storage strategy to store OTS-IFC data in real-time, overcoming the imbalance between the fast generation speed in the data acquisition and processing subsystem and the comparatively slower storage speed in the transmission and storage subsystem. This strategy, utilizing an asynchronous buffer structure built on the producer-consumer model, optimizes memory usage for enhanced data throughput and stability. We evaluated the storage performance of the high-speed streaming storage strategy in ultra-large-scale blood cell imaging on a common commercial device. The experimental results show that it can provide a continuous data throughput of up to 5891 MB/s.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, and statin therapy is the cornerstone of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. However, clinical practice is unsatisfactory, and there is significant interest in the risk of residual cardiovascular events. Traditional study methods make it difficult to exclude the crosstalk of confounding factors, and we investigated the impact of the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio on CVD using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) and multivariate Mendelian randomization (MVMR) methods. Methods: Two-sample MR and MVMR analyses were performed using pooled statistics from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of ApoB/ApoA1 ratio (BAR), lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)), and triglyceride (TG) in Europeans to assess the causal relationship between BAR, Lp(a), and TG with coronary artery disease (CAD). Results: The genetic prediction of BAR was significantly correlated with CAD (Inverse variance weighted (IVW) beta = 0.255; OR = 1.291; 95 % CI = 1.061-1.571; P = 0.011) in a two-sample MR analysis. MVMR studies showed that BAR (beta = 0.373; OR = 1.452; 95 % CI = 1.305-1.615; P = 7.217e-12), Lp (a) (beta = 0.238; OR = 1.269; 95 % CI = 1.216-1.323; P = 2.990e-28), and TG (beta = 0.155; OR = 1.168; 95 % CI = 1.074-1.270; P = 2.829e-04) were significantly associated with CAD. After further colinearity analyses of LASSO regressions, the results of multivariate analyses were similar for IVW, MR-Egger, MR-Lasso, and median methods. Conclusion: BAR is causally related to coronary artery disease. BAR is an independent predictor of CAD risk, independent of routine lipid measurements and other risk factors. TG and Lp(a) may be causally related to CAD, subject to verification in clinical practice.

Topological materials carrying topological surface states (TSSs) have extraordinary carrier mobility and robustness, which provide a new platform for searching for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. However, the majority of these TSSs originate from the sp band of topological quantum catalysts rather than the d band. Here, based on the density functional theory calculation, it is reported a topological semimetal Pd3Sn carrying TSSs mainly derived from d orbital and proposed that optimizing surface state electrons of Pd3Sn by introduction heteroatoms (Ni) can promote hybridization between hydrogen atoms and electrons, thereby reducing the Gibbs free energy (ΔGH) of adsorbed hydrogen and improving its HER performance. Moreover, this is well verified by electrocatalytic experiment results, the Ni-doped Pd3Sn (Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn) show much lower overpotential (-29 mV vs RHE) and Tafel slope (17 mV dec-1) than Pd3Sn (-39 mV vs RHE, 25 mV dec-1) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Significantly, the Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn nanoparticles exhibit excellent stability for HER. The electrocatalytic activity of Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn nanoparticles is superior to that of commercial Pt. This work provides an accurate guide for manipulating surface state electrons to improve the HER performance of catalysts.

BACKGROUND: Numerous recent studies have explored the association between metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and the risk of various extrahepatic cancers. However, the conclusions were inconclusive. The aim of this study was to clarify this relationship by conducting a robust meta-analysis. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases to identify relevant cohort studies published prior to February 2024. Hazard ratios (HRs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were combined using a random-effects model in this meta-analysis. RESULTS: Eighteen cohort studies (approximately 16.7 million participants) were finally included in this meta-analysis. MASLD was linked to a higher risk of extrahepatic cancers, such as gastric (n = 10, HR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.07-2.01), colorectal (n = 13, HR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.16-1.53), pancreatic (n = 8, HR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.11-1.79), biliary tract (n = 5, HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.18-1.37), thyroid (n = 6, HR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.02-2.09), urinary system (n = 10, HR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.25-1.69), breast (n = 11, HR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.08-1.26) and female genital organ cancers (n = 10, HR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.11-1.66). However, there was no statistically significant association between MASLD and the risk of head and neck (n = 6, HR = 1.03, 95% CI: 99-1.07), oesophageal (n = 9, HR = 1.26, 95% CI: 0.86-1.86), lung (n = 9, HR = 1.01, 95% CI: 0.92-1.10), prostate (n = 9, HR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.94-1.19) or small intestine cancer (n = 2, HR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.00-3.06). CONCLUSIONS: This latest large-scale meta-analysis indicated that MASLD was associated with an increased risk of various extrahepatic cancers, such as gastric, colorectal, pancreatic, biliary duct, thyroid, urinary system, breast, skin and female genital cancers. Further research is needed to investigate the mechanisms underlying these associations.
