Objective: Compared to low arousal threshold (AT), high AT is an easily overlooked characteristic for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity estimation. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between high AT, hypertension and diabetes in OSA, compared to those with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Methods: A total of 3400 adults diagnosed with OSA were retrospectively recruited. Propensity score matching (PSM) was conducted to further categorize these patients into the low and high AT groups based on the strategy established by previous literature. The different degrees of AHI and quantified AT (AT score) were subsequently measured. The correlation of AT and AHI with the occurrence of various comorbidities in OSA was estimated by logistic regression analysis with odds ratio (OR). Results: After PSM, 938 pairs of patients arose. The median AT score of high and low AT group was 21.7 and 12.2 scores, and the adjusted OR of high AT for hypertension and diabetes was 1.31 (95% CI = 1.07-1.62, P < 0.01) and 1.45 (95% CI = 1.01-2.08, P < 0.05), respectively. Compared to low AT score group, the OR significantly increased in patients with very high AT score (30 ≤ AT score), especially for diabetes (OR = 1.79, 95% CI = 1.02-3.13, P < 0.05). The significant association was not observed in AHI with increasing prevalent diabetes. Conclusion: Higher AT is significantly associated with increased prevalence of hypertension and diabetes in patients with OSA. Compared with AHI, AT score is a potentially comprehensive indicator for better evaluating the relationship between OSA and related comorbidities.

Populus pseudo-cathayana × Populus deltoides is a crucial artificial forest tree species in Northeast China. The presence of the fall webworm (Hyphantria cunea) poses a significant threat to these poplar trees, causing substantial economic and ecological damage. This study conducted an insect-feeding experiment with fall webworm on P. pseudo-cathayana × P. deltoides, examining poplar's physiological indicators, transcriptome, and metabolome under different lengths of feeding times. Results revealed significant differences in phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, total phenolic content, and flavonoids at different feeding durations. Transcriptomic analysis identified numerous differentially expressed genes, including AP2/ERF, MYB, and WRKY transcription factor families exhibiting the highest expression variations. Differential metabolite analysis highlighted flavonoids and phenolic acid compounds of poplar's leaves as the most abundant in our insect-feeding experiment. Enrichment analysis revealed significant enrichment in the plant hormone signal transduction and flavonoid biosynthetic pathways. The contents of jasmonic acid and jasmonoyl-L-isoleucine increased with prolonged fall webworm feeding. Furthermore, the accumulation of dihydrokaempferol, catechin, kaempferol, and naringenin in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway varied significantly among different samples, suggesting their crucial role in response to pest infestation. These findings provide novel insights into how poplar responds to fall webworm infestation.

Background: Cataract surgery and laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) are effective approaches for preventing primary angle closure diseases (PACDs), as well as acute primary angle closure (APAC). Due to the development of population screening and increases in cataract surgery rates, this study aimed to examine trends in the admission rates of PACD among the urban population in China. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined patients who were admitted to a hospital for PACD, and who underwent cataract surgery or LPI operations. The data were obtained from the Yinzhou Regional Health Information Platform (YRHIP) from 2011 to 2021. The annual rates of PACD and APAC admissions, cataract surgery and LPI were analyzed, with the number of cases used as numerators and the annual resident population in Yinzhou district used as denominators. Results: A total of 2,979 patients with PACD admissions, 1,023 patients with APAC admissions, 53,635 patients who underwent cataract surgery and 16,450 patients who underwent LPI were included. The number of annual admissions for PACD gradually increased from 22 cases (1.6/100000) in 2011 to 387 cases (30.8/100000) in 2016, after which it decreased to 232 cases (16.2/100000) in 2019 and then increased to 505 cases (30.6/100000) in 2021. The number of cataract surgeries gradually increased from 1728 (127.7/100000) in 2011 to 7002 (424.9/100000) in 2021. Similarly, the number of LPI gradually increased from 109 (8.0/100000) in 2011 to 3704 (224.8/100000) in 2021. Conclusion: The admission rates of PACD for the urban population in China have declined in recent years after a long increasing trend in the rates of cataract surgery and LPI. However, it increased rapidly during the COVID-19 epidemic. The national health database should be further utilized to investigate temporal trends in the prevalence of PACD.

In this work, an extraordinary solid red emissive phosphor was prepared based on red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs). The synthesis was conducted under an in-situ strategy, with assistance of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. The obtained phosphor possesses a stronger red emission located at 630 nm in solid state, with CIE coordinate of (0.63, 0.35) and quantum yield of âˆ¼ 45 %. As a consequence, not only aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching of R-CDs is avoided in solid state, but also an enhanced emission with high quantum yield is presented. Fluorescence properties were further explored in detail. The emission is found to be responsive to temperature and applied pressure. Based on the excellent emissive performance, the material has great potentials in anti-counterfeiting, latent fingerprint imaging, and temperature/pressure-sensing. This work provides a facile and promising way of preparing solid carbon-based phosphors for special applications.

Flexible wearable sensors recently have made significant progress in human motion detection and health monitoring. However, most sensors still face challenges in terms of single detection targets, single application environments, and non-recyclability. Lipoic acid (LA) shows a great application prospect in soft materials due to its unique properties. Herein, ionic conducting elastomers (ICEs) based on polymerizable deep eutectic solvents consisting of LA and choline chloride are prepared. In addition to the good mechanical strength, high transparency, ionic conductivity, and self-healing efficiency, the ICEs exhibit swelling-strengthening behavior and enhanced adhesion strength in underwater environments due to the moisture-induced association of poly(LA) hydrophobic chains, thus making it possible for underwater sensing applications, such as underwater communication. As a strain sensor, it exhibits highly sensitive strain response with repeatability and durability, enabling the monitoring of both large and fine human motions, including joint movements, facial expressions, and pulse waves. Furthermore, due to the enhancement of ion mobility at higher temperatures, it also possesses excellent temperature-sensing performance. Notably, the ICEs can be fully recycled and reused as a new strain/temperature sensor through heating. This study provides a novel strategy for enhancing the mechanical strength of poly(LA) and the fabrication of multifunctional sensors.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common chronic disease with various comorbidities. The cardiometabolic index (CMI) reflects visceral fat tissue distribution and function, assessing the risk of obesity-related conditions such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) and stroke, which are strongly connected to OSA. The relationship between CMI with OSA and OSA combined with MetS (OMS) remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the screening value of CMI for OSA and OMS, compared to the lipid accumulation product (LAP). Methods: A total of 280 participants who underwent polysomnography were finally included, with the measurements of metabolic-related laboratory test results such as total cholesterol and triglyceride. Receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis and calculation of the area under the curve (AUC) were conducted to assess the screening potential of CMI, LAP, and the logistic regression models established based on them for OSA and OMS. The Youden index, sensitivity, and specificity were used to determine the optimal cutoff points. Results: ROC curve analysis revealed that the AUCs for CMI in screening OSA and OMS were 0.808 and 0.797, and the optimal cutoff values were 0.71 (sensitivity 0.797, specificity 0.776) and 0.89 (sensitivity 0.830, specificity 0.662), respectively, showing higher Youden index than LAP. The AUCs of screening models based on CMI for OSA and OMS were 0.887 and 0.824, respectively. Conclusion: CMI and LAP can effectively screen for OSA and OMS, while CMI has more practical cutoff values for identifying the diseased states. Screening models based on CMI demonstrate a high discriminatory ability for OSA and OMS, which needs verification in a large-scale population.

PURPOSE: To explore the associations between central anterior chamber depth (CACD) and other anterior segment biometric parameters and to determine the possible determinants of CACD in short, normal, and long eyes. METHODS: The biometric data of pre-operation patients aged 50-80 years with coexisting cataract and primary angle-closure disease or senile cataract were reviewed. Axial length (AL), CACD, lens thickness (LT), central corneal thickness (CCT), and white-to-white distance (WTW) were measured by Lenstar optical biometry (Lenstar 900). The data of 100 normal eyes (AL = 22 to 26 mm), 100 short eyes (AL ≤ 22 mm), and 100 long eyes (AL ≥ 26 mm) were consecutively collected for subsequent analyses. RESULTS: The mean age of the subjects was 66.60 ± 7.85 years, with 25.7% of the sample being men. Both CACD and WTW were found to be smallest in short eyes and were smaller in normal eyes than in long eyes (F = 126.524, P < 0.001; F = 28.458, P < 0.001). The mean LT was significantly thicker in short eyes than in normal and long eyes (4.66 mm versus 4.49 mm versus 4.40 mm; F = 18.099, P < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in CCT between the three AL groups (F = 2.135, P = 0.120). Stepwise regression analysis highlighted AL, LT, and WTW as three independent factors associated with CACD in the normal AL group. In the short AL group and long AL group, LT and WTW were independent factors associated with CACD. CONCLUSIONS: CACD increases as AL elongates and reaches a peak when AL exceeds 26 mm. Furthermore, CACD showed inverse correlation with LT and positive correlation with WTW. A relatively small WTW results in an anteriorly positioned lens, and thus, a decrease in CACD.

BACKGROUND: To report the incidence and clinical characteristics of aqueous misdirection (AM) after glaucoma surgery in Chinese patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma. METHODS: Medical records of all patients diagnosed with primary angle-closure glaucoma who underwent glaucoma surgery in the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University between January 2012 and December 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Cases of AM were identified through a keyword-based search. The incidence of AM was calculated. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the AM patients were also described. RESULTS: A total of 5044 eyes with primary angle-closure glaucoma were included (mean age 65.81 ± 9.96 years, 68.11% women). Thirty-eight eyes developed AM, presenting an overall incidence of 0.75%. The mean time interval between surgery and first record of AM diagnosis was 2.57 ± 5.24 months (range, 0 day to 24 months). The incidence of AM was significantly higher in patients aged ≤ 40 years (21.28%) and those aged 40-50 years (3.32%), compared to those > 50 years (0.42%) (P < 0.001). AM developed much more frequently among patients with chronic angle-closure glaucoma (1.30%), compared to those with acute angle-closure glaucoma (0.32%, P < 0.001). Eleven eyes (0.37%) developed AM following non-filtering surgery compared to 24 eyes (2.27%) after filtering surgery (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The incidence of AM after glaucoma surgery was 0.75% in Chinese patients with primary angle closure glaucoma. Younger age, chronic angle-closure glaucoma, and undergoing filtering surgery, were identified as associated risk factors for developing AM. Phacoemulsification may have less risk of developing AM compared to filtering surgery.

BACKGROUND: Astilbin is a promising candidate drug for psoriasis. However, the poor solubility and stability limited its clinical application. PURPOSE: The present work aimed to develop a stable microemulsion of astilbin formulation and evaluate its effect in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Oil phase, surfactants, and cosurfactants were screened using solubility and stability of astilbin as the index. The central composite experiment design and response surface methodology analysis were adopted to optimize microemulsion parameters. The particle size, zeta potential, polydispersity index, viscosity, drug content, encapsulation, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and stability of the optimized microemulsion were evaluated. Then, the drug release and anti-psoriasis effects were evaluated in a mouse model induced by imiquimod. RESULTS: The optimum formulation contained Labrafil M 1944 Cs (10.12%), Polyoxyethylene Castor Oil 35 (37.41%), propylene glycol (12.47%), water (40%), and gallic acid (2.9%), and the average particle size was 14.71 nm. The permeability of astilbin from the optimized astilbin-gallic acid microemulsion in 24 hr was 4.39 times higher compared with the astilbin's microemulsion. The content of astilbin in astilbin-gallic acid microemulsion remained unchanged after being stored at 25°C for 4 months compared with astilbin aqueous (3 h) and astilbin microemulsion (185 h). Compared with the model group, the optimized formulation decreased the PASI score and Baker score by 49% and 73%, respectively, which showed a favorable anti-psoriasis effect. Moreover, there was no difference in the anti-psoriasis effect between the optimized group and the positive control. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that the astilbin-gallic acid microemulsion might be a potential topical drug used for the treatment of psoriasis.

Active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is an efficient control technique to accommodate both internal uncertainties and external disturbances. In the typical ADRC framework, however, the design philosophy is to "force" the system dynamics into a double-integral form by an extended state observer (ESO) and then the controller is designed. Especially, the systems' physical structure has been neglected in such a design paradigm. In this article, a new ADRC framework is proposed by incorporating at a fundamental level the physical structure of the Euler-Lagrange (EL) systems. In particular, the differential feedback gain can be selected considerably small or even 0, due to the effective exploitation of the system's internal damping. The design principle stems from an analysis of the energy balance of EL systems, yielding a physically interpretable design. Moreover, the exploitation of the system's internal damping is thoroughly discussed, which is of practical significance for applications of the proposed design. Besides, a sliding-mode ESO is designed to improve the estimation performance over traditional linear ESO. Finally, the proposed control framework is illustrated through tracking control of an omnidirectional mobile robot. Extensive experimental tests are conducted to verify the proposed design as well as the discussions.

RESUMO

This paper presents a structure-improved extended state observer (SESO) based trajectory tracking control scheme with application to an omnidirectional mobile robot. To alleviate the initial peaking phenomenon of the traditional extended state observer (TESO), a SESO with reduced order is proposed by improving the structure of TESO. Moreover, the designed SESO can achieve superior estimation performances. The total disturbances are estimated by SESO and then compensated in the controller. Then a phase-based nonlinear proportional-differential controller with time-varying gains is applied for high trajectory tracking performance. The stability of SESO and the closed-loop system are analyzed, respectively. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is validated through simulations in both frequency domain and time domain as well as experimental tests.
