RESUMO

As a public health problem, premature ovarian insufficiency leads to infertility or sub-fertility. In addition to premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) increases the lifetime risk of bone fragility, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive impairment. To investigate the effects of environmental pollutants on the occurrence of POI and explore its mechanism, we conducted a computer search for articles published in electronic databases by December 13, 2022. Three reviewers independently examined all included studies and scored the qualities of included studies using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale criteria. In this meta-analysis, eight clinical studies as well as ten preclinical findings showed a pooled OR of 2.331 and 95% CI of 1.968-2.760. This confirms that environmental pollutants, including POPs, heavy metals, PAEs, PAHs, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, and cigarette smoke, are indeed significant risk factors for POI. In addition, it is demonstrated from the results of this study that signaling pathway of calcium and PI3K Akt and Xpnpep2, Col1, Col3, Col4, Cx43, Egr3, Tff1, and Ptgs2 genes may all be involved in the process. Environmental pollutants, including POPs, heavy metals, PAEs, PAHs, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, and cigarette smoke, are indeed significant risk factors for POI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare tumors of the gastrointestinal tract accounting for less than 1% of all gut tumors. GISTs occurring in the rectum are extremely rare, and these usually present at an advanced stage compared with other sites. CASE SUMMARY: A 60-year-old male who presented with features of sensations of rectal tenesmus was referred to our department with a mass in the lower rectum that was detected during a routine checkup. Colonoscopy, transrectal ultrasound, perianal magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonic contrast were used to diagnose the rectum GIST, and then the patient underwent complete transanal resection using the ultrasonic scalpel. The patient was discharged ten days after the operation and was defined as low risk. Therefore, he had no need to receive subsequent adjuvant therapies, and he had not suffered any anal dysfunction or had any evidence of recurrence at follow up. CONCLUSION: Surgical resection with histologically negative margins is the standard curative treatment for rectal GISTs. Appropriate surgical techniques based on the location, size, and resectability of the tumor should attract great attention from clinicians.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced murine colitis is the most commonly used model for the analysis of the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and for the assessment of the efficacy of putative therapeutics. It has been suggested that mice should be given 2.5-10% DSS for 3-7 days to establish the model. OBJECTIVES: To compare the IBD model in C57BL/6J mice given free access to water containing DSS at concentrations of 2.0%, 2.5% or 3.0% for 5, 7 or 10 days. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Female mice (9 weeks old) were given access to drinking water containing DSS (2.0%, 2.5% or 3.0%) for 5-10 days. Body weight and colon length were then measured. Signs of edema, epithelial layer disruption, inflammatory cell infiltration, and cytokine induction, and severe colitis-related clinical signs were observed and analyzed. RESULTS: Weight of the mice decreased and disease activity index (DAI) score immediately increased in all 3 groups. The colon of mice in the 3.0% DSS group was shortened after 5 days, and the colon of mice in the 2.0% and 2.5% DSS groups was shortened after 7 days. A significantly increased intestinal injury score was observed on day 5 in the 3.0% DSS group, on day 7 in the 2.5% DSS group and on day 10 in the 2.0% DSS group. Cytokines were found to be elevated in all 3 groups after 5 days of DSS exposure, with higher DSS concentrations and longer administration times found to be associated with more serious inflammation of the intestinal tract. After 10 days of DSS administration, all mice in the 3.0% DSS group died. CONCLUSIONS: It took 10 days for the 2.0% DSS group, 5 days for the 3.0% DSS group and 7 days for the 2.5% DSS group to develop obvious observable changes related to the induction of the IBD model. The individual differences within groups (within 10 days) could be reduced by prolonging the administration time. Excessive DSS concentration and longer DSS administration time (exceeding 7 days) may increase mortality of the mice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is associated with mood disorders including bipolar disorder. Two statistical modelling frameworks were compared to investigate the longitudinal relationship between repeatedly measured anxiety symptoms and the onset of depression and bipolar disorder in youth at confirmed familial risk. METHODS: Prospectively collected data on 156 offspring of a parent with confirmed bipolar disorder participating in the Canadian Flourish high-risk offspring longitudinal cohort study were used for this analysis. As part of the research protocol at approximately yearly visits, a research psychiatrist completed the HAM-A and a semi-structured diagnostic research interview following KSADS-PL format. Diagnoses using DSM-IV criteria were made on blind consensus review of all available clinical information. We investigated two statistical approaches, Cox model and Joint model, to evaluate the relationship between repeated HAM-A scores and the onset of major depressive or bipolar disorder. The Joint model estimates the trajectory of the longitudinal variable using a longitudinal sub-model and incorporates this estimated trajectory into a Cox sub-model. RESULTS: There was evidence of an increased hazard of major mood disorder for high-risk individuals with higher HAM-A scores under both modelling frameworks. After adjusting for other covariates, a one-unit increase in log-transformed HAM-A score was associated with a hazard ratio of 1.74 (95% CI (1.12, 2.72)) in the Cox model compared to 2.91(95% CI (1.29, 6.52)) in the Joint model. In an exploratory analysis there was no evidence that family clustering substantially affected the conclusions. CONCLUSIONS: Estimated effects from the conventional Cox model, which is often the model of choice, were dramatically lower in this dataset, compared to the Joint model. While the Cox model is often considered the approach of choice for analysis, research has shown that the Joint model may be more efficient and less biased. Our analysis based on a Joint model suggests that the magnitude of association between anxiety and mood disorder in individuals at familial risk of developing bipolar disorder may be stronger than previously reported.

RESUMO

The brightness of the artificial beacon is one critical performance parameter for adaptive optics. Here, a 40-watt level narrow-linewidth microsecond pulsed yellow laser is produced at 589 nm with a high repetition frequency of 600 Hz and a pulse duration of 120 µs. An experiment to project the pulse beam up to the sky and measure the fluorescence photon returns of the Na atoms has been held on the 1.8-meter telescope in Lijiang observatory. During the sky test, a laser guide star (LGS) spot is firstly observed with Rayleigh scattering elimination by means of a gateable pulse format. And, the central wavelength of the laser could be accurately locked to be 589.1584 nm with a linewidth of ~0.34 GHz to match that of sodium-D2a line. Optical pumping with circularly polarized light has also been used to increase the brightness of sodium LGS. In order to maximize the return flux, sodium D2b repumping option is done by an electro-optic modulator with the optimum D2a-D2b frequency offset. As a result, a bright sodium LGS with the return flux of 1610 photons/cm2/s is achieved, corresponding to ~47 photons/cm2/s/W of emitted laser power, which represents a significant improvement in terms of brightness reported ever.
