RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The study was intended to confirm whether Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) with Internal Limiting Membrane (ILM) peeling and intravitreal injection mouse Nerve Growth Factor(mNGF) was effective for the treatment of Idiopathic Macular Hole(IMH) by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography(OCTA) and microperimetry. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in adults' patients. A total of 44 eyes (March 2021-October 2021) with IMH who received surgical treatment in the Affiliated Eye Hospital of Nanchang University in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province were selected. The subjects were treated using PPV combined with ILM peeling and intravitreal mNGF (combined group) or PPV combined with ILM peeling (placebo group). The Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA), Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) and MP-3 microperimetry were carried out and observed at baseline, 1 week(1W), 1,3 and 6 months (1 M,3 M,6 M) postoperatively. RESULTS: The minimum diameter of MH were (568.650 ± 215.862)µm and (533.348 ± 228.836)µm in the Placebo and Combine group pre-operative. During the observation, the macular hole closure rate in the placebo group and combined group were 90% and 95.8% respectively and the difference was not statistically significant(p = 0.583). Compared to pre-surgery, the perimeter and circularity of Foveal Avascular Zone (FAZ) in the placebo group decreased at 1,3,6 M (p = 0.001, < 0.001, < 0.001) and 1W,1,6 M (p = 0.045,0.010, < 0.001) post-surgery respectively. And the perimeter and circularity of FAZ showed significant reduction in the combined group at 1,3,6 M (p = 0.005,0.004, < 0.001) and at each follow-up time point (all values of p < 0.001). The vascular density of SCP increased at 1W(p = 0.031) and 6 M(p = 0.007), the perfusion density of SCP was significantly improved at each follow-up time point (p = 0.028, 0.011, 0.046, 0.004) in the combined group. The BCVA in the combined group was more obvious than that in the placebo group at 1 M, 3 M and 6 M after operation (t1 = 2.248, p1 = 0.030; t3 = 3.546, p3 = 0.001; t6 = 3.054, p6 = 0.004). The changes of BCVA in the combined group was more conspicuous than that in the placebo group at each follow-up time point, and the difference was statistically significant (t1 = 2.206,p1 = 0.033;t2 = 2.54,p2 = 0.015;t3 = 3.546,p3 = 0.001;t6 = 3.124,p6 = 0.003).At 1 M, 3 M and 6 M, the MRS of 2° and 4° in the combined group was better than that in the placebo group(t = -2.429,-2.650,-3.510,-2.134,-2.820,-3.099 p = 0.020,0.011,0.001,0.039,0.007,0.004). During various time points, the MRS of 12°in the combined group was better than that in the placebo group, the difference was statistically significant (t = -3.151, -3.912, -4.521, -4.948, p1 = 0.003, < 0.001, < 0.001 < 0.001). The integrity of External Limiting Membrane (ELM) in combination group was better than that in placebo group at 6 M postoperative(p = 0.022) and that of Ellipsoid Zone(EZ) was preferable in the combined group at 3 M and 6 M after surgery(p = 0.012,0.004). Correlation analysis showed that the integrity of EZ was correlated with 12°MRS at 1 M, 3 M and 6 M after surgery(r = -0.318, -0.343,-0.322;p = 0.023,0.033, < 0.001). There was no correlation between postoperative ELM integrity and postoperative BCVA and 12°MRS(p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results manifested that PPV combined with ILM peeling and intravitreal injection mNGF might be more effective for initial IMH. This method increased the blood flow, MRS and promoted the recovery of ELM and EZ in the macular and might improve the visual function of patients postoperatively.

RESUMO

Rapid and portable detection of foodborne pathogens is of great significance for food safety and public health. The colorimetric methods based on naked-eye have been demonstrated to be a suitable qualitative method for point-of-care testing (POCT). However, analytical instruments like a microplate reader must be needed for the quantitative assay. To overcome its limitation, we herein report a novel photothermal method for foodborne pathogens based on the photothermal effect of aggregated mercaptophenylboronic acid-functionalized AuNPs (MPBA-AuNPs) induced by MPBA to translate the colorimetric detection into a simple temperature measurement using thermometers as the readout. The aggregated AuNPs show higher photothermal conversion efficiency than well-separated AuNPs under 660 nm laser irradiation. In the presence of bacteria, MPBA-AuNPs will attach to the surface of bacteria and keep separated from aggregation induced by excess MPBA, resulting in a lower temperature increase under 660 nm laser irradiation. Using E. coli O157:H7 as a model target, a good linear relationship is observed between temperature increase and bacteria concentration from 1.00 × 105-1.00 × 109 cfu mL-1 (R2 = 0.9877) with a detection limit of 1.97 × 104 cfu mL-1, which is three orders of magnitude lower than of the MPBA-AuNPs-based colorimetric assays. The proposed photothermal method provided a universal platform for rapid and portable detection of broad-spectrum bacteria strains in real samples.

RESUMO

AIM: To explore the intrinsic brain activity variations in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) subjects by using the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) technique. METHODS: Twenty-one subjects with RVO and twenty-one healthy controls (HCs) were enlisted and underwent the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) examination. The spontaneous cerebrum activity variations were inspected using the DC technology. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was implemented to distinguish the DC values of RVOs from HCs. The relationships between DC signal of definite regions of interest and the clinical characteristics in RVO group were evaluated by Pearson's correlation analysis. RESULTS: RVOs showed notably higher DC signals in right superior parietal lobule, middle frontal gyrus and left precuneus, but decreased DC signals in left middle temporal gyrus and bilateral anterior cingulated (BAC) when comparing with HCs. The mean DC value of RVOs in the BAC were negatively correlated with the anxiety and depression scale. CONCLUSION: RVO is associated aberrant intrinsic brain activity patterns in several brain areas including pain-related as well as visual-related regions, which might assist to reveal the latent neural mechanisms.

RESUMO

Rapid detection of pathogens and assessment of antimicrobial susceptibility is of great importance for public health, especially in resource-limiting regions. Herein, we developed a rapid, portable, and universal detection method for bacteria using AgNPs-invertase complexes and the personal glucose meter (PGM). In the presence of bacteria, the invertase could be released from AgNPs-invertase complexes where its enzyme activity of invertase was inhibited. Then, the enzyme activity of invertase was restored and could convert sucrose into glucose measured by a commercially PGM. There was a good linear relationship between PGM signal and concentration of E. coli or S. aureus as the bacteria model with high sensitivity. And our proposed biosensor was proved to be a rapid and reliable method for antimicrobial susceptibility testing within 4 h with consistent results of Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) testing, providing a portable and convenient method to treat infected patients with correct antibiotics and reduce the production of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, especially for resource-limiting settings.

RESUMO

Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is an attractive variant of CDI with distinct advantages over fixed electrode CDI including the capability for seawater desalination, high flow efficiency and easy management of the electrodes. Challenges exist however in increasing treatment capacity with this attempted here through use of a membrane stack configuration. By comparison of standardised metrics (in particular, average salt removal rate (ASRR), energy normalized removed salt (ENRS) and productivity), results show that that an FCDI system with two pairs of ion exchange membranes had the highest efficiency in desalting a brackish influent (1000 mg L-1) to potable levels (∼150 mg L-1) at higher ASRR and ENRS. Further increase in the number of membrane pairs resulted in a decrease in current efficiency, likely as a result of the dominance of electrodialysis. Results of this study provide proof of concept that (semi-)continuous desalination can be achieved in FCDI at high energy efficiency (13.8%-20.2%) and productivity (> 100 L m-2 h-1) and, importantly, provide insight into possible approaches to scaling up FCDI such that energy-efficient water desalination can be achieved.

RESUMO

This paper conducted research on biomechanical characteristics and biological activity of concavity-convex amniotic membrane (CCAM) and discussed its superiority as ocular surface repair material. Folding and compression with vacuum of fresh amniotic membrane were used to prepare CCAM. After cutting the striga of CCAM, sixteen CCAM tissue section were chosen at random to test their tensile strength using electronic universal testing machine. The bilayer amniotic membrane (BAM), the double-deck amniotic membrane (DAM) and the monolayer amniotic membrane (MAM) were as controls. The test parameters included yield strength, tensile strength, elongation at break, elastic modulus and so on. The cytokines of fresh amniotic membrane (FAM), MAM and CCAM were analyzed by radioimmunoassay method. The CCAM was obviously thicker than MAM and DAM. After 15 min in PBS, the CCAM tissue can recover the normal shape. The tensile strength and the elongation at break of CCAM were higher than those of the MAM and the DAM (P < 0.05). The elastic modulus of the CCAM was smaller than that of the MAM and the DAM (P < 0.05). The content of 10 cytokines [epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), b-fibroblast growth factor b-FGF, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived nellrotrophic factor (BDNF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF)] of CCAM decreased significantly compared with the FAM and increased significantly compared with MAM and DAM in 6 cytokines (EGF, FGF, HGF, TGF-betap, PDGF, NGF; P < 0.05). The CCAM composites is thinner and has higher cytokine content than MAM, and better biomechanical properties than the MAM and the DAM, showing the superiority as ocular surface repair material.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel sutureless AMT (amniotic membrane transplantation) or CAT (conjunctivolimbal autograft transplantation) using fibrin glue for reconstructing corneoconjunctival surfaces for primary pterygium associated with cysts. METHODS: A prospective descriptive study was made of the period 1 January 2006-1 May 2009. Nine patients with primary pterygium associated with cysts underwent pterygium and cyst excision followed by sutureless AMT or CAT using fibrin glue. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 8.00±0.67 months, all eyes maintained a smooth and stable corneal epithelial surface without recurrent erosion or persistent epithelial defect. The limbal donor site showed the presence of mild depressions without the formation of pseudopterygium. All eyes have good tear secretion function, tear film stability and ocular motility. CONCLUSION: Sutureless transplantation using fibrin glue is safe and effective for restoring a stable corneoconjunctival epithelium in primary pterygium associated with cysts.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the clinical effect and complications of two different filling materials (aerocyst urethral catheter and expansion sponges) applying in external dacryocystorhinostomy (EXT-DCR) and compare their advantages and disadvantages. METHODS: A retrospective study was made in the period from April, 1 2000 to April, 1 2005. Totally 180 patients (240 eyes) underwent the EX-DCR using different filling materials and divided into three groups randomly: negative control groups (group 1), expansion sponges group (group 2) and aerocyst urethral catheter group (group 3). The gender, etiology, clinical findings, surgical technique, filling materials, the condition of ocular surface and complications were analyzed. Filling materials were removed during day 7. Postoperative success was determined by lacrimal patency to irrigation, a positive dye test, hemorrhage and errhysis conditions after extubation and subjective resolution of epiphora and liquor puris. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 5.14±1.69 years, the success rate were 73.7% (group 1), 86.5% (group 2), 98.7% (group 3) in three groups. There was significant statistical difference among three groups in the surgical success rate and the operative complications (including hemorrhage, errhysis, periorbital ecchymosis after extubation)(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: EXT-DCR with aerocyst urethral cathete intraoperatively have higher success rate, fewer operative complications and a high patient satisfaction ,and can be used to simplify and speed up traditional EXT-DCR.
