RESUMO

Chiral light emission plays a key role in sensing, tomography, quantum communication, among others. Whereas, achieving highly pure, tunable chirality emission across a broad spectrum currently presents significant challenges. Free-electron radiation emerges as a promising solution to surpass these barriers, especially in hard-to-reach regimes. Here, chiral free-electron radiation is presented by exploiting the spin-momentum locking (SML) property of spoof surface plasmons (SSPs). When the phase velocity of free electrons matches that of the SSPs, the SSPs can be excited. By implementing wavenumber compensation through perturbations, the confined SSPs are transformed into free-space free-electron radiation. Owing to the law of angular momentum conservation, this process converts the transverse spin angular momentum of SSPs into the longitudinal spin angular momentum of free-electron radiation during the process, producing pure, tunable, and chiral free-electron radiation across a broad spectrum. This method achieves an optimal degree of circular polarization approaching -1. The innovative methodology can be adapted to SML-enabled guided states or silicon photonics platforms, offering new avenues for achieving chiral emission.

RESUMO

The fraudulent adulteration of goat milk with cheaper and more available milk of other species such as cow milk is occurrence. The aims of the present study were to investigate the effect of goat milk adulteration with cow milk on the mid-infrared (MIR) spectrum and further evaluate the potential of MIR spectroscopy to identify and quantify the goat milk adulterated. Goat milk was adulterated with cow milk at 5 different levels including 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. Statistical analysis showed that the adulteration had significant effect on the majority of the spectral wavenumbers. Then, the spectrum was preprocessed with standard normal variate (SNV), multiplicative scattering correction (MSC), Savitzky-Golay smoothing (SG), SG plus SNV, and SG plus MSC, and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) were used to establish classification and regression models, respectively. PLS-DA models obtained good results with all the sensitivity and specificity over 0.96 in the cross-validation set. Regression models using raw spectrum obtained the best result, with coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and the ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) of cross-validation set were 0.98, 2.01, and 8.49, respectively. The results preliminarily indicate that the MIR spectroscopy is an effective technique to detect the goat milk adulteration with cow milk. In future, milk samples from different origins and different breeds of goats and cows should be collected, and more sophisticated adulteration at low levels should be further studied to explore the potential and effectiveness of milk mid-infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics.

RESUMO

Insect gut microbiota and their metabolites play a significant role in the shaping of hosts' diets and feeding habits. We conducted 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing on the gut microbiota of specialist blister beetle larvae that feed on locust eggs and artificial food at different instars, to explore the relationship between gut microbiota and the specialized feeding habit of the blister beetle larvae. There is no significant difference in the gut microbial structure among the second to the fourth instar larvae under the same rearing conditions, but the gut microbial structure of the first instar larvae was significantly different from the second to the fourth instar larvae fed by different diets. Bacteria associated with polysaccharide utilization are relatively barren in first instar larvae. Compared to the carbohydrate content between the artificial diet and locust eggs, we speculate that an excessive amount of polysaccharides in the artificial diet may be detrimental to the growth and development of first instar larvae. Gut microbiota of the second to the fourth instar larvae fed with different diets significantly differ in microbial community structure. The different bacteria, especially the metabolism-related intestinal bacteria in locust eggs-fed larvae, may help the hosts adapt to the environment and contribute to the production of active ingredients. The relative abundance of polysaccharide utilization-related bacteria was significantly higher in the artificial diet-fed larvae compared to the locust eggs-fed larvae, which showed the same result when compared to the first instar larvae. Changes in gut microbes of blister beetle larvae and their metabolic inferences could enrich our understanding of the nutritional requirements of the specialist and help optimize the artificial diet of medicinal cantharides.

RESUMO

Stress-associated proteins (SAPs) are known to play an important role in plant responses to abiotic stresses. This study systematically identified members of the sunflower SAP gene family using sunflower genome data. The genes of the sunflower SAP gene family were analyzed using bioinformatic methods, and gene expression was assessed through fluorescence quantification (qRT-PCR) under salt and drought stress. A comprehensive analysis was also performed on the number, structure, collinearity, and phylogeny of seven Compositae species and eight other plant SAP gene families. The sunflower genome was found to have 27 SAP genes, distributed across 14 chromosomes. The evolutionary analysis revealed that the SAP family genes could be divided into three subgroups. Notably, the annuus variety exhibited amplification of the SAP gene for Group 3. Among the Compositae species, C. morifolium demonstrated the highest number of collinearity gene pairs and the closest distance on the phylogenetic tree, suggesting relative conservation in the evolutionary process. An analysis of gene structure revealed that Group 1 exhibited the most complex gene structure, while the majority of HaSAP genes in Group 2 and Group 3 lacked introns. The promoter analysis revealed the presence of cis-acting elements related to ABA, indicating their involvement in stress responses. The expression analysis indicated the potential involvement of 10 genes (HaSAP1, HaSAP3, HaSAP8, HaSAP10, HaSAP15, HaSAP16, HaSAP21, HaSAP22, HaSAP23, and HaSAP26) in sunflower salt tolerance. The expression of these 10 genes were then examined under salt and drought stress using qRT-PCR, and the tissue-specific expression patterns of these 10 genes were also analyzed. HaSAP1, HaSAP21, and HaSAP23 exhibited consistent expression patterns under both salt and drought stress, indicating these genes play a role in both salt tolerance and drought resistance in sunflower. The findings of this study highlight the significant contribution of the SAP gene family to salt tolerance and drought resistance in sunflower.

RESUMO

Apoptosis, inflammation, and wound healing are critical pathophysiological events associated with various liver diseases. Currently, there is a lack of in vivo approaches to study hepatocyte apoptosis-induced liver injury and repair. To address this critical knowledge gap, we developed a unique genetically modified mouse model, namely, 3xTg-iHAP (3-Transgene with inducible Hepatocyte Apoptosis Phenotype) in this study. The 3xTg-iHAP mice possess three transgenes including Alb-Cre, Rosa26-rtTA, and tetO-Fasl on a B6 background. These mice are phenotypically normal, viable, and fertile. After subcutaneous administration of a single dose of doxycycline (5 mg/kg, Dox) to 3xTg-iHAP mice, we observed a complete histological spectrum of sterile liver wound-healing responses: asymptomatic hepatocyte apoptosis at 8 h, necrotic liver injury and sterile inflammation at 48 h, followed by hepatocyte mitosis and regeneration within 7 days. During the injury phase, the mice exhibited an increase in biomarkers of ALT, CXCL1, and IL-6 in peripheral blood and α-SMA protein in liver tissues. Conversely, the mice displayed a decrease in these markers in the recovery phase. Remarkably, this model shows that the sterile liver injury following elevated hepatocyte apoptosis is associated with an increase in myeloid cells in the liver. Within 7 days post-Dox administration, the liver of Dox-treated 3xTg-iHAP mice displays a normal histological structure, indicating completion of wound-healing. Together, we established a novel mouse model of injury and regeneration induced by hepatocyte apoptosis. This tool provides a robust in vivo platform for studying the pathophysiology of sterile liver inflammation, regeneration, and new therapeutic interventions for liver diseases.

RESUMO

There is an evident requirement for a rapid, efficient, and simple method to screen the authenticity of milk products in the market. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy stands out as a promising solution. This work employed FTIR spectroscopy and modern statistical machine learning algorithms for the identification and quantification of pasteurized milk adulteration. Comparative results demonstrate modern statistical machine learning algorithms will improve the ability of FTIR spectroscopy to predict milk adulteration compared to partial least square (PLS). To discern the types of substances utilized in milk adulteration, a top-performing multiclassification model was established using multi-layer perceptron (MLP) algorithm, delivering an impressive prediction accuracy of 97.4 %. For quantification purposes, bayesian regularized neural networks (BRNN) provided the best results for the determination of both melamine, urea and milk powder adulteration, while extreme gradient boosting (XGB) and projection pursuit regression (PPR) gave better results in predicting sucrose and water adulteration levels, respectively. The regression models provided suitable predictive accuracy with the ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) values higher than 3. The proposed methodology proved to be a cost-effective and fast tool for screening the authenticity of pasteurized milk in the market.

RESUMO

Polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PTC) materials with low switching temperature points are crucial for numerous electronic devices, which typically function within the room temperature range (0-40 °C). Ideal polymeric PTC materials for flexible electronic thermal control should possess a room-temperature switching temperature, low room-temperature resistivity, exceptional mechanical flexibility, and adaptive thermal control properties. In this study, a novel PTC material with a room-temperature switching temperature and superb mechanical properties has been designed. A blend of a semi-crystalline polymer EVA with a low melting temperature (Tm) and an amorphous polymer (PVAc) with a low glass transition temperature (Tg) was prepared. Low-cost graphite was chosen as the conductive filler, while CNF was incorporated as a hybrid filler to enhance the material's heating stability. PVAc0.4/EVA0.6/GP-3wt.% CNF exhibited the lowest room temperature resistivity, and its PTC strength (1.1) was comparable to that without CNF addition, with a Curie temperature of 29.4 °C. Room temperature Joule heating tests revealed that PVAc0.4/EVA0.6/GP-3wt.% CNF achieved an equilibrium temperature of approximately 42 °C at 25 V, with a heating power of 3.04 W and a power density of 3.04 W/cm2. The Young's modulus of PVAc0.4/EVA0.6/GP-3wt.% CNF was 9.24 MPa, and the toughness value was 1.68 MJ/m3, indicating that the elasticity and toughness of the composites were enhanced after mixing the fillers, and the mechanical properties of the composites were improved by blending graphite with CNF.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia and related diseases have been identified as significant global public health threats. This study involved comprehensive field and systematic investigations of various rickettsial organisms in Yunnan Province. METHODS: Between May 18, 2011 and November 23, 2020, field investigations were conducted across 42 counties in Yunnan Province, China, encompassing small mammals, livestock, and ticks. Preliminary screenings for Rickettsiales involved amplifying the 16S rRNA genes, along with additional genus- or species-specific genes, which were subsequently confirmed through sequencing results. Sequence comparisons were carried out using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). Phylogenetic relationships were analyzed using the default parameters in the Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis (MEGA) program. The chi-squared test was used to assess the diversities and component ratios of rickettsial agents across various parameters. RESULTS: A total of 7964 samples were collected from small mammals, livestock, and ticks through Yunnan Province and submitted for screening for rickettsial organisms. Sixteen rickettsial species from the genera Rickettsia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neoehrlichia, and Wolbachia were detected, with an overall prevalence of 14.72%. Among these, 11 species were identified as pathogens or potential pathogens to humans and livestock. Specifically, 10 rickettsial organisms were widely found in 42.11% (24 out of 57) of small mammal species. High prevalence was observed in Dremomys samples at 5.60%, in samples from regions with latitudes above 4000 m or alpine meadows, and in those obtained from Yuanmou County. Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis were broadly infecting multiple genera of animal hosts. In contrast, the small mammal genera Neodon, Dremomys, Ochotona, Anourosorex, and Mus were carrying individually specific rickettsial agents, indicating host tropism. There were 13 rickettsial species detected in 57.14% (8 out of 14) of tick species, with the highest prevalence (37.07%) observed in the genus Rhipicephalus. Eight rickettsial species were identified in 2375 livestock samples. Notably, six new Rickettsiales variants/strains were discovered, and Candidatus Rickettsia longicornii was unambiguously identified. CONCLUSIONS: This large-scale survey provided further insight into the high genetic diversity and overall prevalence of emerging Rickettsiales within endemic hotspots in Yunnan Province. The potential threats posed by these emerging tick-borne Rickettsiales to public health warrant attention, underscoring the need for effective strategies to guide the prevention and control of emerging zoonotic diseases in China.

RESUMO

The Sigara lateralis (Leach, 1817) is a small aquatic insect belonging to the family Corixidae. The study aims to reveal the genomic data of the mitochondrial genome of S. lateralis. The length of its circular mitochondrial genome is 15,725 bp long with an A + T bias (75.96%). The mitogenome comprises 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, and two rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analyses showed that the S. lateralis is the closest to S. septemlineata. These findings will help the conservation of Corixidae from the perspective of genetic evolution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening disease affecting mostly the ileum of preemies. Intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) apoptosis contributes to NEC pathogenesis. However, how scattered crypt IEC apoptosis leads to NEC with excessive villus epithelial necrosis remains unclear. METHODS: A novel triple-transgenic mouse model, namely, 3xTg-iAPcIEC (inducible apoptosis phenotype in crypt-IEC), was developed to induce IEC-specific overexpression of Fasl transgene using doxycycline (Dox)-inducible tetO-rtTA system and villin-cre technology. The 3-days-old neonatal 3xTg-iAPcIEC mice and their littermate controls were subcutaneously (s.c.) challenged with a single dose of Dox. Intestinal tissues were processed at different time points to examine scattered crypt IEC apoptosis-mediated NEC development. Gene knockout technology, antibody-mediated cell depletion, and antibiotic-facilitated Gram-positive bacteria depletion were used to study mechanisms. RESULTS: Treatment of 3xTg-iAPcIEC mouse pups with Dox induces scattered crypt IEC apoptosis followed by crypt inflammation and excessive villous necrosis resembling NEC. This progression correlated with elevated Ifng, Rip3, CD8+ T cells, and Gram-positive bacteria in the ileum. Mechanistically, IFN-γ and RIP3-activated signals mediate the effect of scattered crypt IEC apoptosis on the induction of intestinal crypt inflammation and villous necrosis. Meanwhile, pathophysiological events of CD8+ T cell infiltration and dysbiosis with Gram-positive bacteria primarily contribute to excessive villous inflammation and necrosis. Notably, blocking any of these events protects against NEC development in 3xTg-iAPcIEC mouse pups, underlining their central roles in NEC pathogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: Scattered crypt IEC apoptosis induces NEC in mouse pups via IFN-γ, RIP3, CD8+ T cells, and Gram-positive bacteria-mediated comprehensive pathophysiological events. Our findings may advance knowledge in the prevention and treatment of NEC.

RESUMO

Previous studies have found that loneliness affects cognitive functions in older persons. However, the influence of loneliness on different cognitive fields and the internal mechanism of the relationship are unclear. A total of 4772 older persons aged above 50 years (Mean = 65.31, SD = 6.96, 57.7% female) were included in this study. All the participants completed the characteristics scale, as well as the loneliness scale, leisure activity scale, and cognitive function tests in six domains. The results showed that 17.6% of participants had high loneliness, while 16.7% of participants had low loneliness. Associations were observed between higher levels of loneliness and lower scores in general cognitive ability, memory, and executive functions. Mediation analysis suggested that leisure activities, encompassing mental, physical, and social activities, were associated with cognitive functions in the context of loneliness. These results indicate that leisure activities may play a significant role in the relationship between loneliness and cognitive functions in older adults. The study highlights the importance of considering leisure activities in this demographic to potentially mitigate the adverse cognitive effects associated with loneliness.

RESUMO

Due to their responsiveness to modulation by external direct current fields, dielectric tunable materials are extensively utilized in integrated components, such as ferroelectric phase shifters. Barium strontium titanate ceramics have been considered the most potential tunable materials for a long time. However, the significant dielectric loss and high voltage drive have limited their further applications. Recently, Bi6Ti5WO22 ceramic has regained attention for its high dielectric tunability with low loss. In this study, we judiciously introduce Nb5+ with a larger ionic radius, replacing Ti4+ and W6+. This successful substitution enables the modulation of the phase transition temperature of Bi6Ti5WO22 ceramics to room temperature, resulting in superior tunable properties. Specifically, the 0.7Bi6Ti5WO22-0.3Bi6Ti4Nb2O22 ceramics exhibit giant tunability (~75.6%) with ultralow loss (<0.002) under a low electric field (1.5 kV/mm). This tunability is twice that of barium strontium titanate ceramics with a similar dielectric constant and only one-tenth of the loss. Neutron powder diffraction and transmission-electron-microscopy illustrate the nanodomains and micro-strains influenced by ion substitution. Density functional theory simulation calculations reveal the contribution of ion substitution to polarization. The research provides an ideal substitute for tunable material and a general strategy for adjusting phase transition temperature to improve dielectric properties.

RESUMO

Background: Borrelia miyamotoi is a spirochete species transmitted via hard ticks. Following its discovery in Japan, this pathogen has been detected around the world, and is increasingly confirmed as a human pathogen causing febrile disease, namely relapsing fever. Its presence has been confirmed in the Northeast China. However, there is little information regarding the presence of B. miyamotoi and other hard-tick-borne relapsing fever spirochetes in southern China including Yunnan province, where tick and animal species are abundant and many people both inhabit and visit for recreation. Methods: For the present study, we collected samples of ticks, wildlife, and domestic animal hosts from different counties in Yunnan province. Nucleic acids from samples were extracted, and the presence of B. miyamotoi and other relapsing fever spirochetes was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the 16S rRNA specific target gene fragment. The positive samples were then amplified for partial genome of the flaB and glpQ genes. Statistical differences in its distribution were analyzed by SPSS 20 software. Sequence of partial 16S rRNA, flaB and glpQ genome were analyzed and phylogenetic trees were constructed. Results: A total of 8260 samples including 2304 ticks, 4120 small mammals and 1836 blood of domestic animal hosts were collected for screening for infection of B. miyamotoi and other relapsing fever spirochetes. Cattle and sheep act as the main hosts and Rhipicephalus microplus, Haemaphysalis nepalensis, H. kolonini and Ixodes ovatus were identified as the important vector host with high prevalence or wide distribution. Only one Mus caroli (mouse) and one Sorex alpinus (shrew) were confirmed positive for relapsing fever spirochetes. Evidence of vertical transmission in ticks was also confirmed. Two known strains of B. miyamotoi and one novel relapsing fever spirochetes, B. theileri-like agent, were confirmed and described with their host adaptation, mutation, and potential risk of spreading and spillover for human beings. Conclusions: Our results provide new evidence of relapsing fever spirochetes in vector and animal hosts in Yunnan province based on large sample sizes, and offer guidance on further investigation, surveillance and monitoring of this pathogen.

RESUMO

In the process of oilfield exploitation and production, harmful pollutants, such as Crude oil that falls to the ground (generally refers to crude oil that leaks to the ground during oil production or transportation), production wastewater and oil-bearing mud are produced. In this contribution, the soil and crude oil from Daqing area are adopted as experimental materials to make a soil column-experimental device. The results show that the maximum migration depth of petroleum pollutants is 25 cm, most of the pollutants exist above 10 cm. The components of pollutants in disturbed soil column are complex, and the peak area of each component is large, mainly distributed in C12-C28, while in undisturbed soil column, the content of pollutants is small, and the peak area of each component is also small, mainly distributed in C12-C22. With the increase of depth, the relative content of aromatic hydrocarbons increases. The migration ability of low carbon component is weaker than the other components in crude oil. The components with high carbon number are significantly higher in shallow part. The relative contents of each component from high to low are saturates, aromatic hydrocarbons, resin and asphaltene in the soil. Compared with disturbed soil columns, the structure of undisturbed soil is complex, and the migration rate of pollutants in undisturbed soil is slower than that in disturbed soil. With the increase of depth, the light components of disturbed soil columns gradually decrease, and the relative content of heavy components changes little. The light components of the undisturbed soil column also gradually decreased, and the heavy components greater than C22 did not migrate to the depth of the soil column.

RESUMO

Purpose: Iliac limb occlusion (ILO) is a serious complication of endovascular abdominal aneurysm repair (EVAR). This study aimed to identify predictive factors for ILO derived from aortoiliac morphology, endovascular procedure-related parameters, and aneurysmal remodeling characteristics. Patients and Methods: Patient demographics, pre-EVAR anatomical characteristics of the aneurysm, endovascular procedure details, and post-EVAR aneurysmal remodeling outcomes were analyzed and compared using univariate analysis. Statistically significant factors were subsequently subjected to Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier analyses. Results: Between January 2013 and April 2022, 66 patients were included in this study. Fourteen patients presented with ILO and were compared with 52 control patients with patent endograft limb over at least 1-year of follow-up. The tortuosity indices of the common iliac artery (CIA) and endograft iliac limb to vessel oversizing were significantly larger in the ILO group than in the patent endograft limb group. The CIA index of tortuosity ≥1.08, and endograft iliac limb to vessel oversizing ≥18.8% were independent predictors for ILO. During the follow-up of all patients, the proximal aortic neck and CIA diameters increased, aneurysm sac diameter decreased, and aortic neck and aortic length increased. The aortoiliac length increased over time in patients with patent endograft limb but not in patients with ILO. A change in the lowest renal artery-left iliac bifurcation distance ≦0.07 mm increased the risk of ILO. Conclusion: ILO is predisposed to occur when the CIA index of tortuosity ≥1.08 and endograft iliac limb to vessel oversizing ≥18.8% are present. Significant aortoiliac remodeling, including proximal aortic neck dilatation, neck straightening, aneurysmal sac regression, iliac artery enlargement, and aortic lengthening, occurs after EVAR. Aortoiliac elongation was observed in patients with patent endograft limb, but not in patients with ILO. ILO was associated with a change in the lowest renal artery-left iliac bifurcation from the postoperative measurements ≦ 0.07 mm.

RESUMO

Bioactive peptides (BAPs) represent a unique class of peptides known for their extensive physiological functions and their role in enhancing human health. In recent decades, owing to their notable biological attributes such as antioxidant, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities, BAPs have received considerable attention. Simulated gastrointestinal digestion (SGD) is a technique designed to mimic physiological conditions by adjusting factors such as digestive enzymes and their concentrations, pH levels, digestion duration, and salt content. Initially established for analyzing the gastrointestinal processing of foods or their constituents, SGD has recently become a preferred method for generating BAPs. The BAPs produced via SGD often exhibit superior biological activity and stability compared with those of BAPs prepared via other methods. This review offers a comprehensive examination of the recent advancements in BAP production from foods via SGD, addressing the challenges of the method and outlining prospective directions for further investigation.

RESUMO

The prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens combined with a decline in antibiotic discovery presents a major challenge for health care. To refill the discovery pipeline, we need to find new ways to uncover new chemical entities. Here, we report the global genome mining-guided discovery of new lipopeptide antibiotics tridecaptin A5 and tridecaptin D, which exhibit unusual bioactivities within their class. The change in the antibacterial spectrum of Oct-TriA5 was explained solely by a Phe to Trp substitution as compared to Oct-TriA1, while Oct-TriD contained 6 substitutions. Metabolomic analysis of producer Paenibacillus sp. JJ-21 validated the predicted amino acid sequence of tridecaptin A5. Screening of tridecaptin analogues substituted at position 9 identified Oct-His9 as a potent congener with exceptional efficacy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and reduced hemolytic and cytotoxic properties. Our work highlights the promise of tridecaptin analogues to combat MDR pathogens.

RESUMO

Filamentous growth of streptomycetes coincides with the synthesis and deposition of an uncharacterized protective glucan at hyphal tips. Synthesis of this glucan depends on the integral membrane protein CslA and the radical copper oxidase GlxA, which are part of a presumably large multiprotein complex operating at growing tips. Here, we show that CslA and GlxA interact by forming a protein complex that is sufficient to synthesize cellulose in vitro. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed that the purified complex produces cellulose chains with a degree of polymerization of at least 80 residues. Truncation analyses demonstrated that the removal of a significant extracellular segment of GlxA had no impact on complex formation, but significantly diminished activity of CslA. Altogether, our work demonstrates that CslA and GlxA form the active core of the cellulose synthase complex and provide molecular insights into a unique cellulose biosynthesis system that is conserved in streptomycetes. IMPORTANCE: Cellulose stands out as the most abundant polysaccharide on Earth. While the synthesis of this polysaccharide has been extensively studied in plants and Gram-negative bacteria, the mechanisms in Gram-positive bacteria have remained largely unknown. Our research unveils a novel cellulose synthase complex formed by the interaction between the cellulose synthase-like protein CslA and the radical copper oxidase GlxA from Streptomyces lividans, a soil-dwelling Gram-positive bacterium. This discovery provides molecular insights into the distinctive cellulose biosynthesis machinery. Beyond expanding our understanding of cellulose biosynthesis, this study also opens avenues for exploring biotechnological applications and ecological roles of cellulose in Gram-positive bacteria, thereby contributing to the broader field of microbial cellulose biosynthesis and biofilm research.

RESUMO

Magnetic resonance-diffusion tensor imaging (MR-DTI) has been used in the microvascular decompression and gamma knife radiosurgery in trigeminal neuralgia (TN) patients; however, use of percutaneous stereotactic radiofrequency rhizotomy (PSR) to target an abnormal trigeminal ganglion (ab-TG) is unreported. Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean and radial diffusivity (MD and RD, respectively), and axial diffusivity (AD) of the trigeminal nerve (CNV) were measured in 20 TN patients and 40 healthy control participants immediately post PSR, at 6-months, and at 1 year. Longitudinal alteration of the diffusivity metrics and any correlation with treatment effects, or prognoses, were analyzed. In the TN group, either low FA (value < 0.30) or a decreased range compared to the adjacent FA (dFA) > 17% defined an ab-TG. Two-to-three days post PSR, all 15 patients reported decreased pain scores with increased FA at the ab-TG (P < 0.001), but decreased MD and RD (P < 0.01 each). Treatment remained effective in 10 of 14 patients (71.4%) and 8 of 12 patients (66.7%) at the 6-month and 1-year follow-ups, respectively. In patients with ab-TGs, there was a significant difference in treatment outcomes between patients with low FA values (9 of 10; 90%) and patients with dFA (2 of 5; 40%) (P < 0.05). MR-DTI with diffusivity metrics correlated microstructural CNV abnormalities with PSR outcomes. Of all the diffusivity metrics, FA could be considered a novel objective quantitative indicator of treatment effects and a potential indicator of PSR effectiveness in TN patients.
