RESUMO

The removal of ammonia (NH3) emitted from agricultural and industrial activities is of great significance to protect human health and ecological environment. Photocatalytic NH3 oxidation to N2 under mild conditions is a promising strategy. However, developing visible light photocatalysts for NH3 oxidation is still in its infancy. Here, we fabricate N-TiO2 and Ag/AgCl/N-TiO2 photocatalysts by sol-gel and photodeposition methods, respectively. The introduction of N not only endows TiO2 with visible light response (absorption edge at 460 nm) but also results in the formation of heterophase junction (anatase and rutile). Thus, N-TiO2 shows 2.0 and 1.8 times higher than those over anatase TiO2 and commercial TiO2 for NH3 oxidation under full spectrum irradiation. Meanwhile, surface modification of Ag can simultaneously enhance visible light absorption (generating localized surface plasmon resonance effect) and charge separation efficiency. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of Ag/AgCl/N-TiO2 is further improved. Furthermore, the presence of N and Ag also enhances the selectivity of N2 product owing to the change of reaction pathway. This work simultaneously regulates photocatalytic conversion efficiency and product selectivity, providing some guidance for developing highly efficient photocatalysts for NH3 elimination.

Electrochemical biosensing devices face challenges of severe nonspecific adsorption in complex biological matrices for the detection of biomarkers, and thus, there is a significant need for sensitive and antifouling biosensors. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical biosensor with antifouling and antiprotease hydrolysis ability was constructed for the detection of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) by integrating multifunctional branched peptides with distearoylphosphatidylethanolamine-poly(ethylene glycol) (DSPE-PEG) self-assembled bilayer. The peptide was designed to possess antifouling, antiprotease hydrolysis, and HER2 recognizing capabilities. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that the DSPE was able to effectively self-assemble into a bilayer, and the water contact angle and electrochemical experiments verified that the combination of peptide with the DSPE-PEG bilayer was conducive to enhancing the hydrophilicity and antifouling performance of the modified surface. The constructed HER2 biosensor exhibited excellent antifouling and antiprotease hydrolysis capabilities, and it possessed a linear range of 1.0 pg mL-1 to 1.0 µg mL-1, and a limit of detection of 0.24 pg mL-1. In addition, the biosensor was able to detect HER2 in real human serum samples without significant biofouling, and the assaying results were highly consistent with those measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indicating the promising potential of the antifouling biosensor for clinical diagnosis.

Salinity is an important environmental factor influencing crop growth and yield. Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) catalyses the reversible conversion of oxaloacetate (OAA) to malate. While many MDHs have been identified in various plants, the biochemical function of MDH in rice remains uncharacterised, and its role in growth and salt stress response is largely unexplored. In this study, the biochemical function of OsMDH12 was determined, revealing its involvement in regulating tiller number and salt tolerance in rice. OsMDH12 localises in the peroxisome and is expressed across various organs. In vitro analysis confirmed that OsMDH12 converts OAA to malate. Seedlings of OsMDH12-overexpressing (OE) plants had shorter shoot lengths and lower fresh weights than wild-type (WT) plants, while osmdh12 mutants displayed the opposite. At maturity, OsMDH12-OE plants had fewer tillers than WT, whereas osmdh12 mutants had more, suggesting OsMDH12's role in tiller number regulation. Moreover, OsMDH12-OE plants were sensitive to salt stress, but osmdh12 mutants showed enhanced salt tolerance. The Na+/K+ content ratio increased in OsMDH12-OE plants and decreased in osmdh12 mutants, suggesting that OsMDH12 might negatively affect salt tolerance through influencing the Na+/K+ balance. These findings hint at OsMDH12's potential as a genetic tool to enhance rice growth and salt tolerance.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) accounts for the third highest morbidity burden among malignant tumors worldwide. Previous studies investigated gut microbiome changes that occur during colorectal adenomas (CRA) progression to overt CRC, thus highlighting the importance of the gut microbiome in carcinogenesis. However, few studies have examined gut microbiome characteristics across the entire spectrum, from CRC development to treatment. The study used 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid and internal transcribed spacer amplicon sequencing to compare the composition of gut bacteria and fungi in a Chinese cohort of healthy controls (HC), CRC patients, CRA patients, and CRC postoperative patients (PP). Our analysis showed that beta diversity was significantly different among the four groups based on the gut bacterial and fungal data. A total of 51 species of bacteria and 8 species of fungi were identified in the HC, CRA, CRC, and PP groups. Correlation networks for both the gut bacteria and fungi in HC vs. CRA, HC vs. CRC, and HC vs. PP indicated some hub bacterial and fungal genera in each model, and the correlation between bacterial and fungal data indicated that a highly significant negative correlation exists among groups. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis in a large cohort of HC, CRC, CRA, and PP patients demonstrated a significantly increasing trend of Fusobacterium nucleatum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Candida albicans, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the feces of CRC patients than that of HC patients (p < 0.01). However, the abundance levels of CRA and PP were significantly lower in HC patients than those in CRC patients. Further studies are required to identify the functional consequences of the altered bacterial/fungal composition on metabolism and CRC tumorigenesis in the host.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of vonoprazan-amoxicillin (VA) dual therapy for radically eradicating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, China National Knowledge  Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wanfang databases were searched up to July 7, 2022, to identify clinical trials comparing the efficacy of VA dual therapy and triple therapy for H. pylori eradication. After evaluating the quality of the included studies, random effects models were conducted, and risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to estimate the efficacy and safety of each approach. RESULTS: Six publications (including four randomized controlled trials) involving 2019 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, the eradication rate for VA dual therapy was 89.9%, while it was 85.2% for triple therapy based on other acid inhibitors. The eradication rate of H. pylori in the VA dual regimen group was higher than that in the PPI-based (omeprazole or lansoprazole) triple therapy group (RR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.07-1.23, p < 0.0001). However, the efficacy of VA dual therapy was comparable with VA-Clarithromycin (VAC) triple therapy (RR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.93-1.02). Besides, the incidence of adverse reactions in VA dual therapy was also lower than that in triple therapy (RR = 0.80, 95% CI 0.70-0.91, p = 0.0009). CONCLUSION: Compared with PPI-based triple therapy, VA dual therapy showed a better therapeutic effect, safety and patient compliance rate for eradicating H. pylori, which should be used as a novel curative strategy in the future.

INTRODUCTION: Recent observational studies have reported the association between ischemic stroke (IS) and cerebral microbleeds (CMBs). Whether this reflects a causal association remains to be established. Herein, we adopted a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to comprehensively evaluate the causal association of IS and CMBs. METHODS: The summary-level genome-wide association studies (GWASs) data of IS were obtained from the GIGASTROKE consortium (62,100 European ancestry cases and 1,234,808 European ancestry controls). All IS cases could be further divided into large-vessel atherosclerosis stroke (LVS, n = 6399), cardio-embolic stroke (CES, n = 10,804) and small-vessel occlusion stroke (SVS, n = 6811). Meanwhile, we used publicly available summary statistics from published GWASs of CMBs (3556 of the 25,862 European participants across 2 large initiatives). A bidirectional MR analysis was conducted using inverse-variance weighting (IVW) as the major outcome, whereas MR-Egger and weighted median (WM) were used to complement the IVW estimates as they can provide more robust estimates in a broader set of scenarios but are less efficient (wider CIs). A Bonferroni-corrected threshold of p < 0.0125 was considered significant, and p values between 0.0125 and 0.05 were considered suggestive of evidence for a potential association. RESULTS: We detected that higher risk of IS [IVW odds ratio (OR) 1.47, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-2.07, p = 0.03] and SVS (IVW OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.07-2.47, p = 0.02) were significantly associated with CMBs. Reverse MR analyses found no significant evidence for a causal effect of CMBs on IS and its subtypes. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides potential evidence that IS and SVS are causally linked to increased risk of CMBs. Further research is needed to determine the mechanisms of association between IS and CMBs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Emerging researches have regarded serum chloride as a capable predictor of mortality in liver cirrhosis. We aim to investigate the clinical role of admission chloride in cirrhotic patients with esophagogastric varices receiving transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), which is unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data of cirrhotic patients with esophagogastric varices undergoing TIPS in Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. Mortality outcome was obtained by following up for 1-year after TIPS. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression were used to identify independent predictors of 1-year mortality post-TIPS. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were adopted to assess the predictive ability of the predictors. In addition, log-rank test and Kaplan-Meier (KM) analyses were employed to evaluate the prognostic value of predictors in the survival probability. RESULTS: A total of 182 patients were included ultimately. Age, fever symptom, platelet-to lymphocyte-ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), total bilirubin, serum sodium, chloride, and Child-Pugh score were related to 1-year follow-up mortality. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, serum chloride (HR = 0.823, 95%CI = 0.757-0.894, p < 0.001) and Child-Pugh score (HR = 1.401, 95%CI = 1.151-1.704, p = 0.001) were identified as independent predictors of 1-year mortality. Patients with serum chloride <107.35 mmol/L showed worse survival probability than those with serum chloride ≥107.35 mmol/L no matter with or without ascites (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Admission hypochloremia and increasing Child-Pugh score are independent predictors of 1-year mortality in cirrhotic patients with esophagogastric varices receiving TIPS.

Microbiome and their metabolites are increasingly being recognized for their role in colorectal cancer (CRC) carcinogenesis. Towards revealing new CRC biomarkers, we compared 16S rRNA gene sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolite analyses in 10 CRC (TCRC) and normal paired tissues (THC) along with 10 matched fecal samples (FCRC) and 10 healthy controls (FHC). The highest microbial phyla abundance from THC and TCRC were Firmicutes, while the dominant phyla from FHC and FCRC were Bacteroidetes, with 72 different microbial genera identified among four groups. No changes in Chao1 indices were detected between tissues or between fecal samples whereas non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis showed distinctive clusters among fecal samples but not tissues. LEfSe analyses indicated Caulobacterales and Brevundimonas were higher in THC than in TCRC, while Burkholderialese, Sutterellaceaed, Tannerellaceaea, and Bacteroidaceae were higher in FHC than in FCRC. Microbial association networks indicated some genera had substantially different correlations. Tissue and fecal analyses indicated lipids and lipid-like molecules were the most abundant metabolites detected in fecal samples. Moreover, partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) based on metabolic profiles showed distinct clusters for CRC and normal samples with a total of 102 differential metabolites between THC and TCRC groups and 700 metabolites different between FHC and FCRC groups. However, only Myristic acid was detected amongst all four groups. Highly significant positive correlations were recorded between genus-level microbiome and metabolomics data in tissue and feces. And several metabolites were associated with paired microbes, suggesting a strong microbiota-metabolome coupling, indicating also that part of the CRC metabolomic signature was attributable to microbes. Suggesting utility as potential biomarkers, most such microbiome and metabolites showed directionally consistent changes in CRC patients. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to increase sample sizes towards verifying these findings.

Background: Carbapenem resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is an independent risk factor for nosocomial infection which poses a serious threat to human health. How to prevent and suppress CRKP infection and explore its drug resistance mechanisms have become a huge challenge and possesses immediate significance. Methods: A total of 45 CRKP strains isolated from hospitalized patients in Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University were collected from August 2018-December 2020. The strain's identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed using the VITEK 2 automated identification instrument. Single molecule DNA sequencing of 45 CRKP isolates was performed by the third generation high-throughput sequencing technology. Results: The results were analyzed by multi locus sequence typing (MLST) and phylogenetic analysis. Antimicrobial susceptibility showed that 45 CRKP isolates were multi-drug resistant strains, and the resistance rates to common antibiotics were as high as 68%. Whole genome sequencing results showed that the CRKP strains carried multiple drug resistance genes and virulence factors. MLST analysis found two different sequence types (ST), of which 44 were ST11 and 1 was ST1049. Conclusion: Through whole genome sequencing (WGS), we found multiple drug-resistant genes and virulence factors, and there was obvious dominant microbiota. The source was mainly related to nosocomial infection. The ST11-KPC Klebsiella pneumoniae was the main type, which was consistent with the most common type in China. We identified several dominant microbiotas which may serve as a target in the clinical prevention and treatment of severe bacterial infections. Our finding may have a role for guiding clinical antibiotic choosing.

Lithium (Li) extraction from brines is a major barrier to the sustainable development of batteries and alloys; however, current separation technology suffers from a trade-off between ion selectivity and permeability. Herein, a crown ether mechanically interlocked 3D porous organic framework (Crown-POF) was prepared as the porous filler of thin-film nanocomposite membranes. Crown-POF with penta-coordinated (four Ocrown atoms and one Ntert-amine atom) adsorption sites enables a special recognition for Li+ ion. Moreover, the four Ntert-amine atoms on each POF branch facilitate the flipping motion of Li+ ion along the skeletal thread, while retaining the specified binding pattern. Accordingly, the crown ether interlocked POF network displays an ultrafast ion transfer rate, over 10 times that of the conventional porous materials. Notably, the nanocomposite membrane gives high speed and selectivity for Li+ ion transport as compared with other porous solid-based mixed-matrix membranes.

Grain essential amino acid (EAA) levels contribute to rice nutritional quality. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying EAA accumulation and natural variation in rice grains remain unclear. Here we report the identification of a previously unrecognized auxin influx carrier subfamily gene, OsAUX5, which encodes an amino acid transporter that functions in uptake of multiple amino acids. We identified an elite haplotype of Pro::OsAUX5Hap2 that enhances grain EAA accumulation without an apparent negative effect on agronomic traits. Natural variations of OsAUX5 occur in the cis elements of its promoter, which are differentially activated because of the different binding affinity between OsWRKY78 and the W-box, contributing to grain EAA variation among rice varieties. The two distinct haplotypes were shown to have originated from different Oryza rufipogon progenitors, which contributed to the divergence between japonica and indica. Introduction of the indica-type Pro::OsAUX5Hap2 genotype into japonica could significantly increase EAA levels, indicating that indica-type Pro::OsAUX5Hap2 can be utilized to increase grain EAAs of japonica varieties. Collectively, our study uncovers an WRKY78-OsAUX5-based regulatory mechanism controlling grain EAA accumulation and provides a potential target for breeding EAA-rich rice.

Vaginal and cervical canal bacteria are associated with women's health and pregnancy outcomes. Here, we compared their composition and characteristics in 37 reproductive-aged Chinese women including 24 pregnant women with cervical incompetence (vaginal and cervical canal bacteria formed Groups A and B, respectively) and 13 healthy pregnant women (vaginal and cervical canal bacteria formed Groups C and D, respectively) using high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of 16S rRNA gene. The results of alpha and beta diversity analysis, respectively, indicated no statistical differences between Groups A and B (p = 0.32, 0.06), nor Groups B and D (p = 0.69, 0.74); however, differences were found between Groups C and D (p = 0.02, 0.01) and between Groups A and C (p = 0.04, 0.02). PLS-DA analysis showed that the individuals from each group were irregularly distributed according to their clade. Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Ureaplasma were the dominant genera in all groups. Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSts) analysis identified 31 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) orthologs associated with the bacterial communities from the four groups, including membrane transport, folding, sorting and degradation, xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism, and nucleotide metabolism. We further determined relationships between pregnancy outcomes (Apgar scores) and certain bacterial species. A significant positive correlation was found between Apgar scores and Actinomyces neuii and Anoxybacillus flavithermus in the vagina and cervical canal of pregnant women with cervical incompetence while Bacteroides plebeius, Bifidobacterium pseudopodium and Staphylococcus petrasii in the cervical canal displayed negative correlations with Apgar scores. Moreover, Clostridium fimetarium, Methanobacterium congolense, Pseudomonas chlororaphis, and Psychrobacter nivimaris in the vagina were negatively correlated with Apgar scores. These bacteria may serve as potential biomarkers, however, additional research is warranted to verify their role in clinical outcomes.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a well-known neurodegenerative disorder associated with a high risk in middle-aged and elderly individuals, severely impacting the patient's quality of life. 1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) is frequently used to establish PD in animals. Dendritic spines are dendritic processes that form the foundation of learning and memory. Reportedly, dendritic spine density of striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs) declines in PD, and this decline has been associated with PD progression; however, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Herein, we used the MPTP animal model to examine whether serum-induced kinase (SNK) and spine-associated Rap guanosine triphosphatase (SPAR) contribute to decreased dendritic spine density in striatal MSNs. MPTP was used to establish the animal model, which exhibits motor function impairment and dopaminergic cell loss. To assess spine density, Golgi staining was performed to count striatal dendritic spines, which were reduced in the MPTP group when compared with those in the normal control group. Immunohistochemistry was performed to analyze changes in SNK and SPAR expression. MPTP treatment significantly increased the expression of SNK in striatal MSNs, whereas that of SPAR was significantly decreased when compared with the normal control group. These findings offer clues to further explore the mechanism of declining dendritic spine density in patients with PD and provide evidence for potential target identification in PD.

Background: Although overall colorectal cancer (CRC) cases have been declining worldwide, there has been an increase in the incidence of the CRC among individuals younger than 50 years old, which is associated with distant metastasis (DM) and poor prognosis. Methods: Young-onset CRC patients' postoperative data were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between January 2010 and December 2015. Data from the SEER database were divided into early stage and advanced stage according to whether chemoradiotherapy was recommended in the guidelines. Independent risk factors for DM were explored by using univariate and multivariate logistic regression separately. A predictive model was established and presented as nomogram in the training set of advanced stage. The model was internally verified in testing set and externally validated in a cohort of 145 patients from Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. The accuracy, reliability, and clinical application value were assessed using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), the area under the curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA), respectively. Different risk subgroups of DM were classified according to the scores of the nomogram in the training set of advanced stage. Results: A total of 5,584 patients were eligible and enrolled in our study in which 1,277 were in early stage and 4,307 in advanced stage. Preoperative CEA positive was found to be an independent predictor of DM in early stage. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that tumor size, degree of differentiation, T stage, N stage, preoperative CEA, and whether radiation or chemotherapy performed were independent risk factors for DM (all, p < 0.05) in advanced stage. Great accuracies were achieved in our nomogram with AUC of 0.801 in training set, 0.811 in testing set, and 0.791 in the validation cohort, respectively. Calibration curves and DCA in internal validation and external validation both showed good stability and clinical utility values. Conclusions: Preoperative CEA positive was a significant predictor of DM for young-onset CRC patients. A novel nomogram containing clinical and pathological features was established for predicting DM of advanced CRC in patients younger than 50 years old. This tool may serve as an early alert for clinicians to DM and make better clinical treatment regimens.

Migratory birds are the primary source and reservoir of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) related to their gut microbes. In this study, we performed metagenomics analysis to study the gut microbial communities and ARGs of Anser erythropus wintering at Shengjin (SJ) and Caizi (CZ) Lakes. The results showed that bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea were the dominant gut microbes. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that the microbiota compositions significantly differed between the two populations. Diet may be the most crucial driver of the gut microbial communities for A. erythropus. This species fed exclusively on Poaceae spp. at Shengjin Lake and primarily on Carex spp. at Caizi Lake. Tetracycline, macrolide, fluoroquinolone, phenicol, and peptide antibiotics were the dominant resistant types. ARGs had a significantly higher abundance of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the Shengjin Lake samples than in Caizi Lake samples. PCA indicated that most Shengjin Lake samples significantly differed in gut microbiota composition from those obtained at Caizi Lake. This difference in gut microbiota composition between the two lakes' samples is attributed to more extensive aquaculture operations and poultry farms surrounding Shengjin Lake than Caizi Lake. ARGs-microbes associations indicated that 24 bacterial species, commonly used as indicators of antibiotic resistance in surveillance efforts, were abundant in wintering A. erythropus. The results revealed the composition and structural characteristics of the gut microbiota and ARGs of A. erythropus, pointing to their high sensitivities to diet habits at both lakes. This study also provides primary data for risk prevention and control of potential harmful pathogens that could endanger public health and therefore are of major significance to epidemiological and public health.

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) with discrete molecular components linked through a mechanical bond in space can be harnessed for the operation of molecular switches and machines, which shows huge potential to imitate the dynamic response of natural enzymes. In this work, rotaxane compounds were adopted as building monomers for the synthesis of a crown-ether ring mechanically intercalated covalence organic framework (COF). This incorporation of MIMs into open architecture implemented large amplitude motions, whose wheel slid along the axle in response to external stimulation. After impregnation with Zn2+ ions, the relative locations of two zinc active sites (crown-ether coordinated Zn(II) and bipyridine coordinated Zn(II)) are endowed with great flexibility to fit the conformational transformation of an organophosphorus agent during the hydrolytic process. Notably, the resulting self-adaptive binuclear zinc center in a crown-ether-threaded COF network is endowed with a record catalytic ability, with a rate over 85.5 µM min-1 for organophosphorus degradation. The strategy of synthesis for porous artificial enzymes through the introduction of mechanically bound crown ether will enable significant breakthroughs and new synthetic concepts for the development of advanced biomimetic catalysts.

Fixing imperfections in keyed dry joints between the concrete segments compromise the performance of precast concrete segmental bridges (PCSBs), which needs to consider carefully. In this study, a finite-element model on high-strength concrete single-keyed dry joints in PCSBs was established and validated by experimental results. Parametric studies on fixing imperfections in key, concrete strengths, and confining pressures were carried out based on that model. The numeric results included crack patterns, load-displacements and shear strength. Fixing imperfections- especially at lower surface of keys-reduced shear strength of single-keyed dry joints by the different shear transfer mechanism. Higher confining pressure and concrete strength improved the shear strength, but they mitigated and aggravated the effect of fixing imperfections at lower surface of key on shear strength, respectively. Compared with simulating results, AASHTO standard overestimated the shear capacity of single-keyed dry joints with fixing imperfections at lower surface of key by up to 0.602-22.0%, but greatly underestimated that of the rest. A modified formula with a strength reduction factor was proposed. For six experimental three-keyed dry-joint specimens and 30 numeric single-keyed dry-joint specimens with or without fixing imperfections, the average ratio of code predictions to experimental results was 90.4% and 81.6%, respectively.

OBJECTIVES: The depressed heart function is the main complication to cause death of septic patients in clinic. It is urgent to find effective interventions for this intractable disease. In this study, we investigated whether butyrate could be protective for heart against sepsis and the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Mice were randomly divided into three groups. Model group challenged with LPS (30 mg/kg, i.p.) only. Butyrate group received butyrate (200 mg/kg·d) for 3days prior to LPS administration (30 mg/kg). Normal group received saline only. 6h and 12h after LPS administration were chosen for detection the parameters to estimate the effects or mechanism of butyrate pretreatment on heart of sepsis. RESULTS: The data showed that septic heart depression was attenuated by butyrate pretreatment through improvement of heart function depression (P<0.01) and reduction of morphological changes of myocardium. The overexpression of proinflammatory factors, TNF-α, IL-6 and LTB4, in heart tissues induced by sepsis was significantly alleviated by butyrate pretreatment (P<0.01). As oxidative stress indicators, SOD and CAT activity, and MDA content in heart were deteriorated by LPS challenge, which was noticeably ameliorated by butyrate pretreatment (P<0.01 or P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, pretreatment with butyrate attenuated septic heart depression via anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation.
