RESUMO

Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) is known for high concentrations of Mn2+, NH4+, and heavy metals. Failure to undergo benign treatment and landfill disposal would undeniably lead to negative impacts on the quality of the surrounding ecological environment. This study sought to mitigate the latent environmental risks associated with EMR using a cooperative solidification/stabilization (S/S) method involving coal fly ash (CFA). Leveraging leaching toxicity tests, the leaching behavior of pollutants in electrolytic manganese residue-based geopolymer materials (EMRGM) was determined. At the same time, mechanistic insights into S/S processes were explored utilizing characterization techniques such as XRF, XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, and XPS. Those results confirmed significant reductions in the leaching toxicities of Mn2+ and NH4+ to 4.64 µg/L and 0.99 mg/L, respectively, with all other heavy metal ions falling within the permissible limits set by relevant standards. Further analysis shows that most of NH4+ volatilizes into the air as NH3, and a small part is fixed in the EMRGM in the form of struvite; in addition to being oxidized to MnOOH and MnO2, Mn2+ will also be adsorbed and wrapped by silicon-aluminum gel together with other heavy metal elements in the form of ions or precipitation. This research undeniably provides a solid theoretical foundation for the benign treatment and resourceful utilization of EMR and CFA, two prominent industrial solid wastes.

BACKGROUND: Mirror syndrome is a rare disease characterized by "triple edema", while Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (PHUS) is a serious disease that occurs within a short period of time after the end of pregnancy, with a low prevalence and poor prognosis, and it is even rarer for both to occur in the same patient. METHODS: We report a case of mirror syndrome combined with PHUS and analyze the clinical data to improve the understanding of the disease. RESULTS: The patient presented clinically with "triple edema" and was diagnosed with mirror image syndrome. After cesarean section, the patient developed cardiac insufficiency, renal insufficiency, hemolysis, and other symptoms and was diagnosed as PHUS. After active treatment, the maternal prognosis was good. CONCLUSIONS: Mirror syndrome and PHUS are both clinically rare diseases with poor long-term prognosis if not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner; therefore, awareness of the diseases, early and accurate diagnosis and timely and correct treatment should be improved.

A kagome lattice hosts a plethora of quantum states arising from the interplay between nontrivial topology and electron correlations. The recently discovered kagome magnet RMn6Sn6 (R represents a rare-earth element) is believed to showcase a kagome band closely resembling textbook characteristics. Here, we report the characterization of local electronic states and their magnetization response in YMn6Sn6 via scanning tunneling microscopy measurements under vector magnetic fields. Our spectroscopic maps reveal a spontaneously trimerized kagome electronic order in YMn6Sn6, where the 6-fold rotational symmetry is disrupted while translational symmetry is maintained. Further application of an external magnetic field demonstrates a strong coupling of the YMn6Sn6 kagome band to the field, which exhibits an energy shift discrepancy under different field directions, implying the existence of magnetization-response anisotropy and anomalous g factors. Our findings establish YMn6Sn6 as an ideal platform for investigating kagome-derived orbital magnetic moment and correlated magnetic topological states.

Background: Lysyl oxidase enzymes (LOXs), as extracellular matrix (ECM) protein regulators, play vital roles in tumor progression by remodeling the tumor microenvironment. However, their roles in glioblastoma (GBM) have not been fully elucidated. Methods: The genetic alterations and prognostic value of LOXs were investigated via cBioPortal. The correlations between LOXs and biological functions/molecular tumor subtypes were explored in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA). After Kaplan‒Meier and Cox survival analyses, a Loxl1-based nomogram and prognostic risk score model (PRSM) were constructed and evaluated by time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration curves, and decision curve analyses. Tumor enrichment pathways and immune infiltrates were explored by single-cell RNA sequencing and TIMER. Loxl1-related changes in tumor viability/proliferation and invasion were further validated by CCK-8, western blot, wound healing, and Transwell invasion assays. Results: GBM patients with altered LOXs had poor survival. Upregulated LOXs were found in IDH1-wildtype and mesenchymal (not Loxl1) GBM subtypes, promoting ECM receptor interactions in GBM. The Loxl1-based nomogram and the PRSM showed high accuracy, reliability, and net clinical benefits. Loxl1 expression was related to tumor invasion and immune infiltration (B cells, neutrophils, and dendritic cells). Loxl1 knockdown suppressed GBM cell proliferation and invasion by inhibiting the EMT pathway (through the downregulation of N-cadherin/Vimentin/Snai1 and the upregulation of E-cadherin). Conclusion: The Loxl1-based nomogram and PRSM were stable and individualized for assessing GBM patient prognosis, and the invasive role of Loxl1 could provide a promising therapeutic strategy.

Tinnitus, characterized by phantom sound perception, is a highly disruptive disorder lacking definitive and effective treatments. Its intricate neural mechanisms are not fully understood. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has demonstrated potential as a substitute or supplementary treatment by activating central vagal pathways. However, standardized therapeutic protocols and objective tests to assess efficacy are lacking. Therefore, taVNS shows promise as a therapy for tinnitus, and treatment protocols should be optimized in future clinical trials.

The collective modes of the superconducting order parameter fluctuation can provide key insights into the nature of the superconductor. Recently, a family of superconductors has emerged in non-magnetic kagome materials AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs), exhibiting fertile emergent phenomenology. However, the collective behaviors of Cooper pairs have not been studied. Here, we report a distinct collective mode in CsV3-xTaxSb5 using scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy. The spectral line-shape is well-described by one isotropic and one anisotropic superconducting gap, and a bosonic mode due to electron-mode coupling. With increasing x, the two gaps move closer in energy, merge into two isotropic gaps of equal amplitude, and then increase synchronously. The mode energy decreases monotonically to well below 2 Δ and survives even after the charge density wave order is suppressed. We propose the interpretation of this collective mode as Leggett mode between different superconducting components or the Bardasis-Schrieffer mode due to a subleading superconducting component.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery has been endorsed by clinical guidelines for colon cancer, but not for rectal cancer on account of unapproved oncologic equivalence with open surgery. AIMS: We started this largest-to-date meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopy in the treatment of rectal cancer compared with open surgery. MATERIALS & METHODS: Both randomized and nonrandomized controlled trials comparing laparoscopic proctectomy and open surgery between January 1990 and March 2020 were searched in PubMed, Cochrane Library and Embase Databases (PROSPERO registration number CRD42020211718). The data of intraoperative, pathological, postoperative and survival outcomes were compared between two groups. RESULTS: Twenty RCTs and 93 NRCTs including 216,615 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria, with 48,888 patients received laparoscopic surgery and 167,727 patients underwent open surgery. Compared with open surgery, laparoscopic surgery group showed faster recovery, less complications and decreased mortality within 30 days. The positive rate of circumferential margin (RR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.72 to 0.85, p < 0.0001) and distal margin (RR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.66 to 0.85 p < 0.0001) was significantly reduced in the laparoscopic surgery group, but the completeness of total mesorectal excision showed no significant difference. The 3-year and 5-year local recurrence, disease-free survival and overall survival were all improved in the laparoscopic surgery group, while the distal recurrence did not differ significantly between the two approaches. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopy is non-inferior to open surgery for rectal cancer with respect to oncological outcomes and long-term survival. Moreover, laparoscopic surgery provides short-term advantages, including faster recovery and less complications.

The application of natural alternatives as food preservatives has gained much attention due to the escalating negative perception of synthetic preservatives among consumers and the spread of drug-resistance foodborne pathogens. Natural flavonoids have the potential to be employed for food safety due to their antimicrobial properties against a wide range of foodborne pathogenic microorganisms. In this perspective, we reviewed the antimicrobial activities of natural flavonoids, the mechanism of action, as well as their application for food safety and quality. Various strategies for the incorporation of flavonoids into food products were highlighted, including direct addition to food formulations, encapsulation as micro or nanocarriers, and incorporation into edible or active films and coatings. Furthermore, we discussed the current challenges of industrial application of flavonoids, and proposed future trends to enhance their potential as natural preservatives. This review provides a theoretical foundation for the further development and application of flavonoids for food safety.

BACKGROUND: Facilitating the healing process of skin post-trauma is crucial for minimizing infection risks and reinstating normal tissue functionality. While past studies have established astaxanthin (ASX) as an effective compound in promoting wound healing, the precise mechanism of its action remains unclear. Consequently, the objective of this study was to explore the impact of ASX on the acute wound healing of rat skin by modulating macrophage polarization. METHODS: Eighteen male SD rats were randomly assigned to control, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), and ASX groups. Acute skin wounds were induced in the rats, and the effects of different treatments on wound area and healing were assessed. Hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining was employed to detect histopathological changes in the skin, while Masson staining was utilized to observe collagen expression. Immunohistochemistry was conducted to identify clusters of differentiation (CD) 206 macrophages in the tissues. Furthermore, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the levels of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-4, and IL-13. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), arginase (Arg)-1, and mannose receptor C-type 1 (Mrc1) proteins in the injured skin of rats was assessed through Western blot analysis. RESULTS: On postoperative days 7 and 14, the ASX treatment demonstrated notable reductions in inflammatory cell infiltration and inflammatory cytokine expression when compared to the Control and DMSO groups. This was accompanied by evident improvements in the pathological changes in skin tissue, characterized by the regeneration of new epidermis, dermal repair, and increased thickness of granulation, contributing to enhanced scar formation. Furthermore, ASX therapy exhibited an upregulation in the expression levels of collagen I and collagen III, along with markers indicative of M2 macrophages. These findings collectively signify the accelerated progression of wound healing attributed to ASX intervention. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, these findings collectively indicate that ASX facilitates the healing of rat skin wounds by suppressing inflammatory responses and fostering M2 macrophage polarization. Consequently, ASX holds promise as a potentially effective drug for the treatment of skin wounds.

Food safety is related to human health and sustainable development. International food trade poses food safety risks through the collateral transport of toxic chemicals that are detrimental to human health. Domestic interprovincial trade has similar effects within countries but has not been comprehensively investigated previously. Here, we assessed the effects of interprovincial trade on food safety and human dietary exposure to short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), a group of emerging persistent toxic chemicals, in seafood across China by synthesizing data from field observation and various models. Our findings indicate that there is a higher level of SCCPs exposure risk in coastal provinces compared to inland provinces. Approximately, 70.3% of human exposure to SCCPs through seafood consumption in China was embodied in the interprovincial seafood trade in 2021. Specifically, the domestic trade led to a remarkable increase in SCCPs exposure in the coastal provinces in South China, attributable to low SCCPs pollution in these provinces and imported seafood from those provinces with high SCCPs pollution. In contrast, human exposure to SCCPs decreased in those coastal provinces in East China due to importing seafood from those provinces with low SCCPs concentrations. The interprovincial seafood trade routes were optimized by linear programming to minimize human exposure to SCCPs considering both shipping cost and health risk constraints. The optimized trade routes reduced the national per capita SCCPs exposure through seafood consumption by over 12%. This study highlights the importance of interprovincial food trade in the risk assessment of toxic chemicals.

The liver plays a crucial role in maintaining systemic iron homeostasis by secreting hepcidin, which is essential for coordinating iron levels in the body. Imbalances in iron homeostasis are associated with various clinical disorders related to iron deficiency or iron overload. Despite the clinical significance, the mechanisms underlying how hepatocytes sense extracellular iron levels to regulate hepcidin synthesis and iron storage are not fully understood. In this study, we identified Foxo1, a well-known regulator of macronutrient metabolism, that translocates to the nucleus of hepatocytes in response to high-iron feeding, holo-transferrin, and BMP6 treatment. Furthermore, Foxo1 plays a crucial role in mediating hepcidin induction in response to both iron and BMP signals by directly interacting with evolutionally conserved Foxo binding sites within the hepcidin promoter region. These binding sites were found to colocalize with Smad-binding sites. To investigate the physiological relevance of Foxo1 in iron metabolism, we generated mice with hepatocyte-specific deletion of Foxo1. These mice exhibited reduced hepatic hepcidin expression and serum hepcidin levels, accompanied by elevated serum iron and liver non-heme iron concentrations. Moreover, high-iron diet further exacerbated these abnormalities in iron metabolism in mice lacking hepatic Foxo1. Conversely, hepatocyte-specific Foxo1 overexpression increased hepatic hepcidin expression and serum hepcidin levels, thereby ameliorating iron overload in a murine model of hereditary hemochromatosis (Hfe-/- mice). In summary, our study identifies Foxo1 is a critical regulator of hepcidin and systemic iron homeostasis. Targeting Foxo1 may offer therapeutic opportunities for managing conditions associated with aberrant iron metabolism.

Nitrate pollution in groundwater has become a global concern. One of the most important issues in controlling the nitrate pollution of groundwater is to identify the pollution source quickly and accurately. In this review, we firstly summarized the isotopic background values of potential sources of nitrate pollution in groundwater in 17 provinces (cities, autonomous regions) and 29 study areas in China, which could provide the fundamental database for subsequent research. Secondly, we reviewed the research progress of nitrate isotopes combined with multiple tracers for tracing nitrate in groundwater, and discussed their applicable conditions, advantages, and disadvantages. We found that halides and microorganisms combined with nitrate isotopes could accurately trace the pollution sources of domestic sewage, excrement and agricultural activities. The combination of Δ17O and nitrate isotopes could effectively distinguish the source of atmospheric deposition of nitrate in groundwater. The combination of groundwater age and nitrate isotopes could further determine the time scale of nitrate pollution. In addition, we summarized the application cases and compared the characteristics of mass balance mixing model, IsoSource model, Bayesian isotope mixing model, and EMMTE model for quantitative identification of nitrate pollution in groundwater. For the complexity and concealment of groundwater pollution sources, the coupling of nitrate isotopes with other chemical and biological tracing methods, as well as the application of nitrate isotope quantitative models, are effective tools for reliably identifying groundwater nitrate sources and transformation processes.

Herein, we report the assembly behavior of triptycenes with aldehyde (Trip-1) and amino (Trip-2) groups on pristine and iodine-passivated Au(111) surfaces by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. On Au(111) surface, Trip-1 forms long trimer chains and two-dimensional islands via aldehyde-aldehyde hydrogen bonding in one dimension and π-π stacking of adjacent benzene rings in the other dimension. In contrast, Trip-2 lies as individuals or in disorderly stacked islands. Trip-2 and Trip-1 can be mixed in an arbitrary ratio. And Trip-2 molecules disrupt the ordered self-assembly structure of Trip-1 due to the formation of stronger aldehyde-amino hydrogen bonding. DFT, XPS, and Raman spectra confirm the conformational difference of Trip-1 and -2, as well as the aldehyde-amino hydrogen bonding formation in Trip-1 and Trip-2 mixture. On the iodine-passivated Au(111) surface, Trip-1 forms single-molecule chains and a hexagonal closely packed structure due to iodine interlayer mediation. Trip-2 molecules disrupt the hexagonal closely packed structure of Trip-1.

In this study, we developed punicalagin-loaded antimicrobial films based on soy protein isolate (SPI) and apple pectin (AP). The AP was derived from apple pomace waste while the punicalagin was obtained from pomegranate peel. Punicalagin was identified to exist in both α- and ß-isomers, with the ß-type being predominant. The composite films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Our results demonstrated that the incorporation of AP significantly enhanced the mechanical strength, heat resistance, and barrier properties of the films. Moreover, the composite films integrated with punicalagin exhibited excellent antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (with a minimum bactericidal concentration value of 0.25 %), Escherichia coli (with a minimum bactericidal concentration value of 0.50 %), and Aspergillus niger. Finally, these antimicrobial film solutions were tested as coatings on strawberries and found to have significantly better effects on reducing weight loss, improving shelf-life, and maintaining the freshness of strawberries compared to coatings without punicalagin. The results indicate that antimicrobial coatings loaded with punicalagin hold great promise as multifunctional active packaging materials for fruit preservation.

Although it is crucial to promptly restore blood perfusion to revive the ischemic myocardium, reperfusion itself can paradoxically contribute to the electrical instability and arrhythmias of the myocardium. Several studies have revealed that cardiac fibroblasts can impact cardiac electrophysiology through various mechanisms including the deposition of extracellular matrix, release of chemical mediators, and direct electrical coupling with myocytes. Previously, we have shown that hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-treated rat fibroblasts conditional medium (H/R-FCM) could decrease the spontaneous beating frequency of rat neonatal cardiomyocytes and downregulate the expression of gap junction proteins. However, the specific mechanism by which H/R-FCM affects the gap junctions requires further investigation. H/R-FCM was obtained by culturing confluent rat cardiac fibroblasts (RCF) for 4 h under hypoxic conditions. Gap junction function, hemichannel activity, and expression of Cx43 were examined upon treatment with H/R-FCM. Gelatin zymography was performed to detect matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity in the conditioned medium. The effect of H/R-FCM and MMP2 inhibitors on cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmias was investigated with an isolated rat ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) model. H/R-FCM treatment impaired gap junction function, downregulated Cx43 expression, and increased hemichannel activity in rat cardiomyocytes (H9c2). The adverse effect of H/R-FCM on gap junction, which was confirmed by the cardiomyocyte H/R model, was involved in the activation of MMP2. MMP2 inhibition could partially attenuate the detrimental effects of I/R on myocardial electrophysiological indices and arrhythmia susceptibility. Our study indicates that inhibition of MMP2 may be a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of reperfusion arrhythmia.

PURPOSE: Anthracycline-based or platinum-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy belongs to the standard treatment for early-stage breast cancer (EBC) that is either triple-negative or human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive (HER2 +). Currently, there is a paucity of data comparing their impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). METHODS: Triple-negative or HER2 + EBC from our two prospective randomized controlled trials, neoCARH and neoCART, were divided into two groups based on the neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimens they received: anthracycline-based or platinum-based group. HRQoL was the exploratory endpoint in these two trials, which was assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life-Core30 and Breast23 questionnaires. The primary variable of interest was the C30 summary score (C30-SumSc). Assessments were carried out at baseline, after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and 1 year and 2 years after diagnosis. RESULTS: The mean questionnaires' compliance rate was 95.0%. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy, 210 patients had evaluable HRQoL data, the mean least square change from baseline for the platinum-based group was - 15.997 (95% confidence interval (CI): - 17.877 to - 14.117), and it was - 20.156 (95% CI: - 22.053 to - 18.258) for the anthracycline-based group (difference: 4.159, 95% CI: 1.462 to 6.855, P = 0.003, minimal important difference = 3). For the majority of the domains of interest assessed by the C30 and BR23 questionnaires, the platinum-based group demonstrated superior outcomes in comparison to the anthracycline-based group. CONCLUSION: Patients receiving platinum-based or anthracycline-based regimens both experienced worsened HRQoL after neoadjuvant chemotherapy; however, the former provided relatively better HRQoL compared with the latter. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to determine whether there exists an association between low-grade systemic inflammation, as measured by serum C-reactive protein (CRP), and the risk of lower-extremity deep venous thrombosis (LEDVT) in patients with primary intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). METHODS: This observational study was retrospectively conducted on patients with primary ICH who were presented to two tertiary medical centers between January 2021 and August 2022. The primary outcome was detecting LEDVT occurrence within 14 days from the onset of the acute ICH episode. Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were employed to estimate the association between CRP and LEDVT following 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS: Of the 538 patients with primary ICH who met the inclusion criteria, 76 (14.13%) experienced LEDVT. Based on the cut-off levels of CRP measured upon admission from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, patients with primary ICH were categorized into two groups: (i) CRP < 1.59 mg/L and (ii) CRP ≥ 1.59 mg/L. After 1:1 PSM, the LEDVT events occurred in 24.6% of patients with CRP ≥ 1.59 mg/L and 4.1% of patients with CRP < 1.59 mg/L (P < 0.001). ROC curve revealed the area under the ROC curve of 0.717 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.669-0.761, P < 0.001] for CRP to predict LEDVT with a sensitivity of 85.71% and specificity of 56.29%. After adjusting for all confounding variables, the occurrence of LEDVT in ICH patients with higher CRP levels (≥ 1.59 mg/L) was 10.8 times higher compared to those with lower CRP levels (95% CI 4.5-25.8, P < 0.001). A nonlinear association was observed between CRP and an increased risk of LEDVT in the fully adjusted model (P for overall < 0.001, P for nonlinear = 0.001). The subgroup results indicated a consistent positive link between CRP and LEDVT events following primary ICH. CONCLUSIONS: Higher initial CRP levels (CRP as a dichotomized variable) in patients with primary ICH are significantly associated with an increased risk of LEDVT and may help identify high-risk patients with LEDVT. Clinicians should be vigilant to enable early and effective intervention in patients at high risk of LEDVT.

Manipulating the flat band degeneracy and thus getting the correlated insulating phases has been an ideal thread for realizing the exotic quantum phenomenon in the moiré system. To achieve this goal, the delicately tuned twist angle and a substantial displacement field (D) are rigorously requested. Here, we report our scanning tunneling microscope (STM) work on reaching these correlated insulating states in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene through a decorated tip. It acts as a local top gate, leading to an enhanced local D, and enables us to fully lift the 8-fold degeneracy of the flat bands. With the aid of this technique, we further expand the correlated insulating states into a more tolerant twist angle that is down to 0.92°. Moreover, the correlated insulating phases in the hole-doping regime are realized. Our tip decoration method allows us to integrate the STM study with the high displacement field for the correlated phases in the twisted moiré systems.

RESUMO

Chemical reactions of organic molecules on metal surfaces have been intensively investigated in the past decades, where metals play the role of catalysts in many cases. In this review, first, we summarize recent works on spatial molecules, small H2O, O2, CO, CO2 molecules, and the molecules carrying silicon groups as the new trends of molecular candidates for on-surface chemistry applications. Then, we introduce spectroscopy and DFT study advances in on-surface reactions. Especially, in situ spectroscopy technologies, such as electron spectroscopy, force spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, STM-induced luminescence, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption spectroscopy, and infrared reflection adsorption spectroscopy, are important to confirm the occurrence of organic reactions and analyze the products. To understand the underlying mechanism, the DFT study provides detailed information about reaction pathways, conformational evolution, and organometallic intermediates. Usually, STM/nc-AFM topological images, in situ spectroscopy data, and DFT studies are combined to describe the mechanism behind on-surface organic reactions.
