RESUMO

Steering multiple laser beams using spatial light modulators (SLMs) creates unwanted diffraction and reflections that are not modulated by the SLM, which can make beam tracking difficult. A novel, to the best of our knowledge, and simple beam steering methodology is proposed, which aims at reducing the influence of this clutter while maintaining tracking performance. The beam(s) are deliberately defocused before steering with a superposition of a phase ramp and Fresnel lens (PRFL) phase screen on the SLM. As a result, the non-modulated reflections and diffracted light are decreased in relative intensity to the steered beam, in turn allowing simple and standard peak intensity and center of gravity (CG) algorithms for tracking. Hardware demonstration shows tracking performance using the PRFL remained on-par with more complex filtering approaches while adding no additional hardware. This method has potential to improve the communication performance of multi-beam laser communication terminals.

BACKGROUND: To develop and validate a serum protein nomogram for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. METHODS: The serum protein characteristics were extracted from an independent sample containing 30 colorectal cancer and 12 polyp tissues along with their paired samples, and different serum protein expression profiles were validated using RNA microarrays. The prediction model was developed in a training cohort that included 1345 patients clinicopathologically confirmed CRC and 518 normal participants, and data were gathered from November 2011 to January 2017. The lasso logistic regression model was employed for features selection and serum nomogram building. An internal validation cohort containing 576 CRC patients and 222 normal participants was assessed. RESULTS: Serum signatures containing 27 secreted proteins were significantly differentially expressed in polyps and CRC compared to paired normal tissue, and REG family proteins were selected as potential predictors. The C-index of the nomogram1 (based on Lasso logistic regression model) which contains REG1A, REG3A, CEA and age was 0.913 (95% CI, 0.899 to 0.928) and was well calibrated. Addition of CA199 to the nomogram failed to show incremental prognostic value, as shown in nomogram2 (based on logistic regression model). Application of the nomogram1 in the independent validation cohort had similar discrimination (C-index, 0.912 [95% CI, 0.890 to 0.934]) and good calibration. The decision curve (DCA) and clinical impact curve (ICI) analysis demonstrated that nomogram1 was clinically useful. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents a serum nomogram that included REG1A, REG3A, CEA and age, which can be convenient for screening of colorectal cancer.

Chemotherapy-induced mucositis (CIM) is the typical side effect of chemotherapy. This study investigates the potential of alginate oligosaccharide (AOS) in ameliorating CIM induced by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in a murine model and its underlying mechanisms. AOS effectively mitigated body weight loss and histopathological damage, modulated inflammatory cytokines and attenuated the oxidative stress. AOS restored intestinal barrier integrity through enhancing expression of tight junction proteins via MLCK signaling pathway. AOS alleviated intestinal mucosal damage by inhibiting TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway, downregulating the pro-apoptotic protein Bax and upregulating the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. Moreover, AOS significantly enriched intestinal Akkermansiaceae and increased the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), most notably butyrate and isovalerate. Pre-treatment with butyrate and isovalerate also alleviated 5-FU-induced CIM. In conclusion, AOS effectively mitigated CIM through strenghthening intestinal barrier, attenuating inflammation, and modulating gut microbiota and intestianl levels of butyrate and isovalerate. These finding indicate that AOS could be potentially utilized as a supplemental strategy for prevention or mitigation of CIM.

Introduction: Despite the remarkable progress in minimally invasive surgery, the potential association between laparoscopic gastrectomy and the risk of peritoneal metastasis remains uncertain. Aim: To investigate variations in tumour markers in intraperitoneal drainage fluid between laparoscopic radical gastrectomy and open radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Material and methods: A total of 106 patients diagnosed with gastric cancer between July 2018 and November 2020 were included in this study, 45 of whom underwent laparoscopic radical gastrectomy (laparoscopic group) and 61 underwent open radical gastrectomy (open group). Variations in the levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cancer antigen 125 (CA125), cancer antigen 199 (CA199), and α-fetoprotein (AFP) in the intraperitoneal drainage fluid were compared and analysed on postoperative days (PODs) 1, 2, 3, and 5 between the two groups. Additionally, the postoperative 3-year survival rates between the two groups were compared and analysed. Results: No significant differences in CEA, CA199, and AFP levels in the intraperitoneal drainage fluid were observed between the two groups on postoperative days (PODs) 1, 2, 3, and 5 (p > 0.05). However, the level of CA125 in the intraperitoneal drainage fluid of the laparoscopic group was notably higher than that of the open group on POD 2 (p < 0.05); however, there were no significant differences between the two groups on PODs 1, 3, and 5 (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the 3-year postoperative survival rates between the two groups. Conclusions: There were no significant differences in CEA, CA125, CA199, and AFP levels in the intraperitoneal drainage fluid between laparoscopic radical gastrectomy and open radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer, confirming from another perspective that laparoscopic radical gastrectomy does not increase the risk of intraperitoneal metastasis.

Plant-based meat analogs have increasingly attracted the attention of the food industry in recent years. However, the digestion behavior of this innovative solid food in human stomach is poorly understood. In this study, plant-based meat analogs with different internal structures were prepared with/without high-moisture extrusion technology and at different temperatures. A semi-dynamic gastric digestion system which involves the mimic processes of the secretion of gastric juice and the gastric emptying was applied. After extrusion treatment at high temperature (150 ℃), the EHT had the highest anisotropic index (H⊥/H∥=1.90) and an ideal meat-like structure. It was found that particle disintegration and swelling simultaneously occurred in the bolus of the EHT but not in the sample without extrusion treatment (the HLT) in the early stage of gastric digestion. This difference might be attributed to the compact and well-arranged anisotropic structure of the EHT resulting from the extrusion, and leads to difficult enzymatic hydrolyzation unless the particles swell and unfold the polymer chains. The difficulty in particle disintegration in the EHT during gastric digestion is the consequence of the relatively slow gastric emptying rate and the decrease of protein degradation. As a result, the EHT which underwent extrusion treatment at high temperature and possessed the best anisotropic fibrous structure exhibited the slowest gastric digestion. This novel solid food shows good potential as a desired nutritional food for people on diet.

With the worsening indoor air quality in developing countries, more and more attention is being paid to indoor air pollution, especially formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from indoor building materials. A series of methods, such as the C-history method, have been proposed to determine the mechanistic parameters of formaldehyde and other VOC emissions. However, these methods require a relatively long test duration (at least 3 days) and may yield a multi-solution problem for these parameters. Therefore, we have developed a novel method, the two-parameter C-history method, to overcome these limitations by measuring the two early-stage emission characteristic parameters for formaldehyde/VOCs. The experimental results validate the accuracy of this method for different building materials and showed that the test duration can be substantially shortened to within 12 h. Based on this, we propose a new method to quickly predict the two emission characteristic parameters at different temperatures. We optimize the experimental parameters and discuss their influence to further improve accuracy. This method will be useful in engineering applications.

The efficacy of different echinocandins is assessed by evaluating the in vitro activity of a novel antifungal, rezafungin, against invasive fungal isolates in comparison with anidulafungin and caspofungin. Using the broth microdilution (BMD) method, the susceptibility of 1000 clinical Candida isolates (including 400 C. albicans, 200 C. glabrata, 200 C. parapsilosis, 150 C. tropicalis and 50 C. krusei) and 150 Aspergillus isolates (100 A. fumigatus and 50 A. flavus) from the Eastern China Invasive Fungi Infection Group (ECIFIG) was tested for the antifungals including anidulafungin, rezafungin, caspofungin and fluconazole. The echinocandins showed strong activity against C. albicans that was maintained against fluconazole-resistant isolates. The GM MIC (geometric mean minimum inhibitory concentration) value of rezafungin was found to be comparable to that of anidulafungin or caspofungin against the five tested common Candida species. C. tropicalis exhibited higher resistance rates (about 8.67-40.67% in different antifungals) than the other four Candida species. Through the sequencing of FKS genes, we searched for mutations in echinocandin-resistant C. tropicalis isolates and found that all displayed alterations in FKS1 S654P. The determined MEC (minimal effective concentration) values against A. fumigatus and A. flavus for rezafungin (0.116 µg/mL, 0.110 µg/mL) are comparable to those of caspofungin (0.122 µg/mL, 0.142 µg/mL) but higher than for anidulafungin (0.064 µg/mL, 0.059 µg/mL). Thus, the in vitro activity of rezafungin appears comparable to anidulafungin and caspofungin against most common Candida and Aspergillus species. Rezafungin showed higher susceptibility rates against C. glabrata. Rezafungin indicates its potent activity for potential clinical application.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is characterized by pulmonary vascular remodeling, which endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) being its main progressive phase. Wogonin, a flavonoid extracted from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, hinders the abnormal proliferation of cells and has been employed in the treatment of several cardiopulmonary diseases. This study was designed to investigate how wogonin affected EndMT during PH. Monocrotaline (MCT) was used to induce PH in rats. Binding capacity of TGF-ß1 receptor to wogonin detected by molecular docking and molecular dynamics. EndMT model was established in pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) by transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-ß1). The result demonstrated that wogonin (20 mg/kg/day) attenuated right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), right ventricular hypertrophy and pulmonary vascular thickness in PH rats. EndMT in the pulmonary vascular was inhibited after wogonin treatment as evidenced by the restored expression of CD31 and decreased expression of α-SMA. Wogonin has strong affinity for both TGFBRI and TGFBRII, and has a better binding stability for TGFBRI. In TGF-ß1-treated PMVECs, wogonin (0.3, 1, and 3 µM) exhibited significant inhibitory effects on this transformation process via down-regulating the expression of p-Smad2 and Snail, while up-regulating the expression of p-Smad1/5. Additionally, results of Western blot and fluorescence shown that the expression of α-SMA were decrease with increasing level of CD31 in PMVECs. In conclusion, our research showed that wogonin suppressed EndMT via the TGF-ß1/Smad pathway which may lead to its alleviated effect on PH. Wogonin may be a promising drug against PH.

The ongoing emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants poses challenges to the immunity induced by infections and vaccination. We conduct a 6-month longitudinal evaluation of antibody binding and neutralization of sera from individuals with six different combinations of vaccination and infection against BA.5, XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, and BA.2.86. We find that most individuals produce spike-binding IgG or neutralizing antibodies against BA.5, XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, and BA.2.86 2 months after infection or vaccination. However, compared to ancestral strain and BA.5 variant, XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, and BA.2.86 exhibit comparable but significant immune evasion. The spike-binding IgG and neutralizing antibody titers decrease in individuals without additional antigen exposure, and <50% of individuals neutralize XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, and BA.2.86 during the 6-month follow-up. Approximately 57% of the 107 followed up individuals experienced an additional infection, leading to improved binding IgG and neutralizing antibody levels against these variants. These findings provide insights into the impact of SARS-CoV-2 variants on immunity following repeated exposure.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of Chinese medicine (CM) Lianhua Qingwen Granule (LHQW) and Jingyin Gubiao Prescription (JYGB) in asymptomatic or mild patients with Omicron infection in the shelter hospital. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted in the largest shelter hospital in Shanghai, China, from April 10, 2022 to May 30, 2022. A total of 56,244 asymptomatic and mild Omicron cases were included and divided into 4 groups, i.e., non-administration group (23,702 cases), LHQW group (11,576 cases), JYGB group (12,112 cases), and dual combination of LHQW and JYGB group (8,854 cases). The length of stay (LOS) in the hospital was used to assess the effectiveness of LHQW and JYGB treatment on Omicron infection. RESULTS: Patients aged 41-60 years, with nadir threshold cycle (CT) value of N gene <25, or those fully vaccinated preferred to receive CM therapy. Before or after propensity score matching (PSM), the multiple linear regression showed that LHQW and JYGB treatment were independent influence factors of LOS (both P<0.001). After PSM, there were significant differences in LOS between the LHQW/JYGB combination and the other groups (P<0.01). The results of factorial design ANOVA proved that the LHQW/JYGB combination therapy synergistically shortened LOS (P=0.032). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a nadir CT value <25 were more likely to accept CM. The LHQW/JYGB combination therapy could shorten the LOS of Omicron-infected individuals in an isolated environment.

INTRODUCTION: The health impact of retirement is controversial. Most previous studies have been based on self-reported health indicators or the endpoints of some chronic diseases (e.g., morbidity or mortality), but objective physiological indicators (e.g., blood pressure) have rarely been used. The objective of this study is to elucidate the health effects of retirement on blood pressure, thereby offering empirical evidence to facilitate the health of retirees and to optimize retirement policies. METHODS: From 2012 to 2015, 84,696 participants of the Chinese Hypertension Survey (CHS) were included in this study. We applied the fuzzy regression discontinuity design (FRDD) to identify retirement's causal effect on systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and pulse pressure. We also explored the heterogeneity in the effects of retirement across different sex and education level groups. RESULTS: Based on the fully adjusted model, we estimated that retirement increased SBP by 5.047 mm Hg (95% CI: -2.628-12.723, P value: 0.197), DBP by 0.614 mm Hg (95% CI: -3.879-5.108, P value: 0.789) and pulse pressure by 4.433 mm Hg (95% CI: -0.985-9.851, P value: 0.109). We found that retirement led to a significant increase in male participants' SBP and pulse pressure as well as a possible decrease in female participants' blood pressure. Additionally, the blood pressure levels of low-educated participants were more vulnerable to the shock of retirement. CONCLUSION: Retirement is associated with an increase in blood pressure level. There is a causal relationship between the increase in blood pressure levels of men and retirement. Policy-makers should pay extra attention to the health status of men and less educated people when adjusting retirement policies in the future.

Cryptophytes are ancestral photosynthetic organisms evolved from red algae through secondary endosymbiosis. They have developed alloxanthin-chlorophyll a/c2-binding proteins (ACPs) as light-harvesting complexes (LHCs). The distinctive properties of cryptophytes contribute to efficient oxygenic photosynthesis and underscore the evolutionary relationships of red-lineage plastids. Here we present the cryo-electron microscopy structure of the Photosystem II (PSII)-ACPII supercomplex from the cryptophyte Chroomonas placoidea. The structure includes a PSII dimer and twelve ACPII monomers forming four linear trimers. These trimers structurally resemble red algae LHCs and cryptophyte ACPI trimers that associate with Photosystem I (PSI), suggesting their close evolutionary links. We also determine a Chl a-binding subunit, Psb-γ, essential for stabilizing PSII-ACPII association. Furthermore, computational calculation provides insights into the excitation energy transfer pathways. Our study lays a solid structural foundation for understanding the light-energy capture and transfer in cryptophyte PSII-ACPII, evolutionary variations in PSII-LHCII, and the origin of red-lineage LHCIIs.

The common belief that heat treatment enhances the gastric digestion of proteins is largely based on findings from animal proteins and may not apply to all proteins, particularly plant proteins. Here, we compared the digestion characteristics of soybean protein isolates (SPI) in an in vitro semi-dynamic digestion model and found distinct effects of heat treatment on the digestion properties of plant proteins. The results revealed that heat-treated SPIs formed clots during the early stages of digestion, although the clots gradually became smaller and looser as digestion progressed, the systems remained turbid at the end of gastric digestion, indicating the lag in their emptying. Furthermore, heat treatment altered the rheological properties of SPI, resulting in increased viscosity and slower gastric emptying. These effects became more pronounced with increasing heat treatment temperatures. The fluorescence spectrum analysis indicated that heat treatment altered its conformation. This led to protein unfolding and exposure of hydrophobic groups, facilitating the formation of larger aggregates during digestion. Additionally, heat treatment exposed more cleavage sites for gastric proteases, increasing the extent of hydrolysis. Elevated levels of free amino acids and a smaller molecular weight distribution further corroborated these findings. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the gastric digestion characteristics of plant proteins and the relationship between protein aggregation structure and the digestion process.

As the two typical basic binary solid solutions of the relaxor-PbTiO3 family, Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) has been widely investigated, whereas Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PNN-PT) has not. Here, 1.5 mol% Sm-doped (1 - x)Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3, (1 - x)PNN-xPT:0.015Sm with x = 0.33-0.39, ceramics have been prepared and the chemical composition-induced evolution of crystal structure, domain, and electrical properties investigated systematically. With increasing PT content, evolution of the rhombohedral-tetragonal structure was observed. A rhombohedral-tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary occurred around x = 0.36-0.37, which showed a peak piezoelectric property with piezoelectric constant d33 = 531 pC N-1 and planar electromechanical coupling factor kp = 0.37 at room temperature. At the same time, the x = 0.36 composition showed improved ferroelectric behavior with remanent polarization Pr = 13.4 µC cm-2 and coercive field Ec = 3.2 kV cm-1. Interestingly, different from its PMN-PT counterpart, there is no temperature-driven phase transition between room temperature and the Curie temperature for (1 - x)PNN-xPT:0.015Sm. These parameters indicated that the PNN-PT system is worthy of more attention and is a promising platform for further development of high-performance piezo/ferroelectric materials.

The majority of the nearly 10,000 described species of green algae are photoautotrophs; however, some species have lost their ability to photosynthesize and become obligate heterotrophs that rely on parasitism for survival. Two high-quality genomes of the heterotrophic algae Prototheca zopfii Pz20 and Pz23 were obtained using short- and long-read genomic as well as transcriptomic data. The genome sizes were 31.2 Mb and 31.3 Mb, respectively, and contig N50 values of 1.99 Mb and 1.26 Mb. Although P. zopfii maintained its plastid genome, the transition to heterotrophy led to a reduction in both plastid and nuclear genome size, including the loss of photosynthesis-related genes from both the nuclear and plastid genomes and the elimination of genes encoding for carotenoid oxygenase and pheophorbide an oxygenase. The loss of genes, including basic leucine-zipper (bZIP) transcription factors, flavin adenine dinucleotide-linked oxidase, and helicase, could have played a role in the transmission of autotrophy to heterotrophs and in the processes of abiotic stress resistance and pathogenicity. A total of 66 (1.37%) and 73 (1.49%) genes were identified as potential horizontal gene transfer events in the two P. zopfii genomes, respectively. Genes for malate synthase and isocitrate lyase, which are horizontally transferred from bacteria, may play a pivotal role in carbon and nitrogen metabolism as well as the pathogenicity of Prototheca and non-photosynthetic organisms. The two high-quality P. zopfii genomes provide new insights into their evolution as obligate heterotrophs and pathogenicity. IMPORTANCE: The genus Prototheca, characterized by its heterotrophic nature and pathogenicity, serves as an exemplary model for investigating pathobiology. The limited understanding of the protothecosis infectious disease is attributed to the lack of genomic resources. Using HiFi long-read sequencing, both nuclear and plastid genomes were generated for two strains of P. zopfii. The findings revealed a concurrent reduction in both plastid and nuclear genome size, accompanied by the loss of genes associated with photosynthesis, carotenoid oxygenase, basic leucine-zipper (bZIP) transcription factors, and others. The analysis of horizontal gene transfer revealed the presence of 1.37% and 1.49% bacterial genes, including malate synthase and isocitrate lyase, which play crucial roles in carbon and nitrogen metabolism, as well as pathogenicity and obligate heterotrophy. The two high-quality P. zopfii genomes represent valuable resources for investigating their adaptation and evolution as obligate heterotrophs, as well as for developing future prevention and treatment strategies against protothecosis.

Ammonia nitrogen (AN) pollution frequently occurs in urban rivers with the continuous acceleration of industrialization. Monitoring AN pollution levels and tracing its complex sources often require large-scale testing, which are time-consuming and costly. Due to the lack of reliable data samples, there were few studies investigating the feasibility of water quality prediction of AN concentration with a high fluctuation and non-stationary change through data-driven models. In this study, four deep-learning models based on neural network algorithms including artificial neural network (ANN), recurrent neural network (RNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and gated recurrent unit (GRU) were employed to predict AN concentration through some easily monitored indicators such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity, in a real AN-polluted river. The results showed that the GRU model achieved optimal prediction performance with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.349 and coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.792. Furthermore, it was found that data preprocessing by the VMD technique improved the prediction accuracy of the GRU model, resulting in an R2 value of 0.822. The prediction model effectively detected and warned against abnormal AN pollution (> 2 mg/L), with a Recall rate of 93.6% and Precision rate of 72.4%. This data-driven method enables reliable monitoring of AN concentration with high-frequency fluctuations and has potential applications for urban river pollution management.

To explore novel electrode materials with in-depth elucidation of initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), kinetics, and charge storage mechanisms is of great challenge for Na-ion storage. Herein, a novel 3D antiperovskite carbide Ni3ZnC0.7@rGO anode coupled with ether-based electrolyte is reported for fast Na-ion storage, exhibiting superior performance than ester-based electrolyte. Electrochemical tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that Ni3ZnC0.7@rGO anode with ether-based electrolyte can promote charge/ion transport and lower Na+ diffusion energy barrier, thereby improving ICE, reversible capacity, rate, and cycling performance. Cross-sectional-morphology and depth profiling surface chemistry demonstrate that not only a thinner and more homogeneous reaction interface layer with less side effects but also a superior solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film with a high proportion of inorganic components are formed in the ether-based electrolyte, which accelerates Na+ transport and is the significant reason for the improvement of ICE and other electrochemical properties. Meanwhile, electrochemical and ex situ measurements have revealed conversion, alloying, and co-intercalation hybrid mechanisms of the Ni3ZnC0.7@rGO anode based on ether electrolyte. Interestingly, the Na-ion capacitors (SICs) designed by pairing with activated carbon (AC) cathode exhibit favorable electrochemical performance. Overall, this work provides deep insights on developing advanced materials for fast Na-ion storage.

Developing high electroactivity ruthenium (Ru)-based electrocatalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is challenging due to the strong bonding strengths of key Ru─H/Ru─OH intermediates and sluggish water dissociation rates on active Ru sites. Herein, a semi-ionic F-modified N-doped porous carbon implanted with ruthenium nanoclusters (Ru/FNPC) is introduced by a hydrogel sealing-pyrolying-etching strategy toward highly efficient pH-universal hydrogen generation. Benefiting from the synergistic effects between Ru nanoclusters (Ru NCs) and hierarchically F, N-codoped porous carbon support, such synthesized catalyst displays exceptional HER reactivity and durability at all pH levels. The optimal 8Ru/FNPC affords ultralow overpotentials of 17.8, 71.2, and 53.8 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline, neutral, and acidic media, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate that the F-doped substrate to support Ru NCs weakens the adsorption energies of H and OH on Ru sites and reduces the energy barriers of elementary steps for HER, thus enhancing the intrinsic activity of Ru sites and accelerating the HER kinetics. This work provides new perspectives for the design of advanced electrocatalysts by porous carbon substrate implanted with ultrafine metal NCs for energy conversion applications.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil-To-Albumin Ratio (NAR) is a novel inflammatory biomarker. However, the potential prognostic value of NAR in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate whether NAR levels correlated with the 3-month modified Rankin scale (mRS) in patients with AIS. METHODS: AIS patients were included in this retrospective study. NAR was calculated as the ratio of absolute neutrophil count to serum albumin level. Logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the effect of NAR on 3-month mRS of AIS. The predictive values of NAR, albumin level, and neutrophil count were compared utilizing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Moreover, subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted to evaluate the consistency of NAR's effect on AIS prognosis. RESULTS: Of the 780 patients included, 403 (51.67%) had a poor clinical outcome (mRS 3-6) at 3 months. NAR was independently correlated to 3-month poor functional outcome after adjusting for confounders (Odds ratios (OR), 9.34; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.09 to 80.13; p =0.0417). Subgroup analysis showed a relative effect consistent with the overall population results, and no statistical interactions were found in the subgroups (all p for interaction > 0.05). The ROC curve showed that the prognosis-related cutoff value for NAR was 0.123, with corresponding specificity and sensitivity of 53.55% and 63.94%, respectively. When comparing the predictive power, NAR (0.590; 95%CI 0.549-0.630) exhibited the highest area under the curve (AUC) of ROC compared to neutrophils (0.584; 95%CI 0.543-0.624) and albumin (0.540; 95%CI 0.500-0.581). CONCLUSION: There is a positive relationship between NAR levels and 3-month poor functional outcomes in AIS patients, supporting the potential of NAR as a readily available and economic serum biomarker for the early identification of AIS prognosis. Further studies are required to validate the prognostic value and clinical utility of the NAR.
