This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the mechanical properties of Basic Magnesium Sulfate Cement Concrete (BMSC) in comparison to Ordinary Portland Cement Concrete (OPC) within reinforced concrete components. The main objective is to evaluate BMSC's applicability for practical engineering purposes, with a focus on its with early high strength, improved toughness, and superior crack resistance compared to conventional concrete. Experimental procedures involved fabricating beam specimens using OPC concrete with a C40 strength grade, alongside BMSC beams with varying strength grades (C30, C40, and C50). These specimens underwent bending resistance tests to analyze crack patterns and mechanical characteristics. The findings reveal that BMSC beams demonstrate enhanced bending and tensile properties at equivalent strength grades compared to OPC beams. Particularly, cracking mainly occurred at the mid-span region of BMSC beams, characterized by narrower cracks, indicating superior crack resistance. However, it was noted that the toughness of BMSC beams decreases as the strength grade increases. The maximum mid-span deflection of the BMSC test beam was smaller than that of the OPC test beam, which was 3.8 mm and 2.6 mm, respectively. The maximum crack width of the OPC beam was 4.7 times that of the BMSC beam. To facilitate practical implementation, the study developed calculation models for estimating the crack bending distance and ultimate bending distance in BMSC beams, offering valuable tools for engineering design and optimization. Overall, this research provides significant insights into the mechanical behavior of BMSC, presenting potential advantages for structural engineering applications.

The contribution of smelting of nonferrous metals to heavy metals in surface soil have become increasingly important over the past decade. In this study, the distribution of heavy metals around an abandoned mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprise were investigated. Soil (14) and plant (18) samples were collected in the surrounding area. The total concentration of heavy metals and methyl mercury content were measured by ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS. The results show that the average contents of Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and As in all soil samples are higher than the second-level values of Soil environmental quality-Risk control standard for soil contamination of development land (GB 36600-2018). Hg in the leaves ranged from 0.003 to 0.174 mg kg-1. Besides, the Pearson correlation analysis results indicate that Hg has a different environmental behavior compared to the other heavy metal under certain environmental or geographical conditions. But the mantel test statistical analysis results show that the Cr (P < 0.01), Cu, Pb, and Fe (P < 0.05) in the soil may have similar pollution sources with carbonate-bound mercury and iron-manganese oxide-bound mercury. The Hg concentrations show no correlation among plant leaves and soil, but significantly influenced by the distance and wind direction. These findings suggest that Hg in plant leaves may be derived from the deposition of atmospheric mercury from secondary mercury plant. The results will supplement those for relevant policy making for mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprises to improve urban environmental quality and human health.

BACKGROUND: Ginkgo biloba L. preparations (GBLPs) are a class of Chinese herbal medicine used in the adjuvant treatment of ischemic stroke (IS). Recently, several systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) of GBLPs for IS have been published. OBJECTIVE: This overview aims to assess the quality of related SRs and MAs. SEARCH STRATEGY: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese Biological Medicine, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and Chinese Science and Technology Journals databases were searched from their inception to December 31, 2022. INCLUSION CRITERIA: SRs and MAs of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that explored the efficacy of GBLPs for patients with IS were included. DATA EXTRACTION AND ANALYSIS: Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed the methodological quality, risk of bias (ROB), reporting quality, and credibility of evidence of the included SRs and MAs using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2), Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews (ROBIS), the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA), and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE), respectively. Additionally, descriptive analysis and data synthesis were conducted. RESULTS: Twenty-nine SRs/MAs involving 119 outcomes were included in this review. The overall methodological quality of all SRs/MAs was critically low based on AMSTAR 2, and 28 had a high ROB based on the ROBIS. According to the PRISMA statement, the reporting items of the included SRs/MAs are relatively complete. The results based on GRADE showed that of the 119 outcomes, 8 were rated as moderate quality, 24 as low quality, and 87 as very low quality. Based on the data synthesis, GBLPs used in conjunction with conventional treatment were superior to conventional treatment alone for decreasing neurological function scores. CONCLUSION: GBLPs can be considered a beneficial supplemental therapy for IS. However, because of the low quality of the existing evidence, high-quality RCTs and SRs/MAs are warranted to further evaluate the benefits of GBLPs for treating IS. Background: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a leading cause of end-stage kidney disease and is associated with high mortality rates. The influence of routine clinical parameters on DKD onset in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains uncertain. Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched multiple databases, including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, for studies published from each database inception until January 11, 2024. We included cohort studies examining the association between DKD onset and various clinical parameters, including body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and serum uric acid (UA). Random-effect dose-response meta-analyses utilizing one-stage and/or cubic spline models, were used to estimate correlation strength. This study is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022326148). Findings: This analysis of 46 studies involving 317,502 patients found that in patients with T2DM, the risk of DKD onset increased by 3% per 1 kg/m2 increase in BMI (relative risk (RR) = 1.03, confidence interval (CI) [1.01-1.04], I2 = 70.07%; GRADE, moderate); a 12% increased risk of DKD onset for every 1% increase in HbA1c (RR = 1.12, CI [1.07-1.17], I2 = 94.94%; GRADE, moderate); a 6% increased risk of DKD onset for every 5 mmHg increase in SBP (RR = 1.06. CI [1.03-1.09], I2 = 85.41%; GRADE, moderate); a 2% increased risk of DKD onset per 10 mg/dL increase in TG (RR = 1.02, CI [1.01-1.03], I2 = 78.45%; GRADE, low); an 6% decreased risk of DKD onset per 10 mg/dL increase in HDL (RR = 0.94, CI [0.92-0.96], I2 = 0.33%; GRADE, high), and a 11% increased risk for each 1 mg/dL increase in UA (RR = 1.11, CI [1.05-1.17], I2 = 79.46%; GRADE, moderate). Subgroup analysis revealed a likely higher risk association of clinical parameters (BMI, HbA1c, LDL, and UA) in patients with T2DM for less than 10 years. Interpretation: BMI, HbA1c, SBP, TG, HDL and UA are potential predictors of DKD onset in patients with T2DM. Given high heterogeneity between included studies, our findings should be interpreted with caution, but they suggest monitoring of these clinical parameters to identify individuals who may be at risk of developing DKD. Given widespread presence of polystyrene (PS) microplastics/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs), the electroactive responses and adaptation mechanisms of electroactive biofilms (EABs) exposed long-term to PS-containing aquatic environments remain unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of PS MPs/NPs on electroactivity of EABs. Results found that EABs exhibited delayed formation upon initially exposure but displayed an increased maximum current density (Imax) after subsequent exposure for up to 55 days. Notably, EABs exposure to NH2PS NPs (EAB-NH2PSNPs) demonstrated a 50% higher Imax than the control, along with a 17.84% increase in viability and a 58.10% increase in biomass. The cytochrome c (c-Cyts) content in EAB-NH2PSNPs rose by 178.35%, benefiting the extracellular electron transfer (EET) of EABs. Moreover, bacterial community assembly indicated the relative abundance of electroactive bacteria increased to 87.56% in EAB-NH2PSNPs. The adaptability mechanisms of EABs under prolonged exposure to PS MPs/NPs predominantly operate by adjusting viability, EET, and bacterial community assembly, which were further confirmed a positive correlation with Imax through structural equation model. These findings provide deeper insights into long-term effects and mechanisms of MPs/NPs on the electroactive properties of EABs and even functional microorganisms in aquatic ecosystems.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The common characteristics of alcohol-associated liver injury (ALI) include abnormal liver function, infiltration of inflammatory cells, and generation of oxidative stress. The gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) is activated by its neuropeptide ligand, gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP). GRP/GRPR appears to induce the production of cytokines in immune cells and promotes neutrophil migration. However, the effects of GRP/GRPR in ALI are unknown. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We found high GRPR expression in the liver of patients with alcohol-associated steatohepatitis and increased pro-GRP levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of these patients compared with that of the control. Increased expression of GRP may be associated with histone H3 lysine 27 acetylation induced by alcohol, which promotes the expression of GRP and then GRPR binding. Grpr-/- and Grprflox/floxLysMCre mice alleviated ethanol-induced liver injury with relieved steatosis, lower serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, triglycerides, malondialdehyde, and superoxide dismutase levels, reduced neutrophil influx, and decreased expression and release of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Conversely, the overexpression of GRPR showed opposite effects. The pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress roles of GRPR might be dependent on IRF1-mediated Caspase-1 inflammasome and NOX2-dependent reactive oxygen species pathway, respectively. In addition, we verified the therapeutic and preventive effects of RH-1402, a novel GRPR antagonist, for ALI. CONCLUSIONS: A knockout or antagonist of GRPR during excess alcohol intake could have anti-inflammatory and antioxidative roles, as well as provide a platform for histone modification-based therapy for ALI.

BACKGROUND: Huazhuo Tiaozhi granule (HTG) is a herbal medicine formula widely used in clinical practice for hypolipidaemic effects. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying dyslipidaemia treatment have not been well elucidated. RESULTS: A significant reduction in the levels of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was observed in the serum of patients with dyslipidaemia after HTG treatment, without disruption in the levels of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine (Cr). The dyslipidaemia rat model was induced by a high-fat diet and treated with Xuezhikang (0.14 g/kg/d) or HTG (9.33 g crude herb/kg/day) by gavage for 8 weeks. Body weight and liver index were markedly decreased in dyslipidaemic rats after treatment with Xuezhikang or HTG. HTG administration markedly ameliorated hyperlipidaemia by decreasing the levels of TC and LDL-C in serum and hepatic lipid accumulation. In vitro, lipid accumulation in LO2 and HepG2 cells was alleviated by serum treatment with HTG. High lactylation was observed in 198 proteins, including lactylation of histone H2B (K6), H4 (K80). Deep sequencing of microRNAs showed that miR-155-5p was significantly downregulated. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that HTG is an effective and safe formula for treating dyslipidaemia, which promotes lactylation in hepatocytes, and the retardation of miR-155-5p biogenesis.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Accurate prediction of local recurrence or distant metastasis is critical for developing individualized therapies for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients after standard therapy. This study aims to develop and validate a multiparameter MRI-based radiomics signature (RS) for prognostic prediction in LARC patients receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and total mesorectal excision (TME) and to explore the ability of RS for personalized survival risk stratification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this multi-center study, 454 patients who received nCRT and TME and completed 3 years of follow-up participated. RS was constructed for prognostic prediction based on features extracted from pretreatment multiparameter MRI in a training cohort (TC; n = 298), which was tested in an internal validation cohort (IVC; n = 75) and further validated in an independent external validation cohort (EVC; n = 81). Furthermore, the ability of RS for personalized survival risk stratification was explored using the Kaplan-Meier survival curves. RESULTS: The RS model showed satisfactory accuracy for prognostic prediction with AUCs of 0.83, 0.81 and 0.82 in the TC, IVC and EVC, respectively. In addition, RS helped to refine risk stratification for LARC patients on the basis of significantly different 3-year disease-free survival rates, independent of their pathological stage, pre-surgery CEA, and even treatment modality. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed RS can be used not only to predict local recurrence or distant metastasis but also to serve as an effective postoperative survival risk stratification tool for clinicians to facilitate decision-making for LARC patients receiving standard treatment.

BACKGROUND: To develop and validate radiomics models for prediction of tumor response to neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) using both pre-NAT and post-NAT multiparameter magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). METHODS: In this multicenter study, a total of 563 patients were included from two independent centers. 453 patients from center 1 were split into training and testing cohorts, the remaining 110 from center 2 served as an external validation cohort. Pre-NAT and post-NAT mpMRI was collected for feature extraction. The radiomics models were constructed using machine learning from a training cohort. The accuracy of the models was verified in a testing cohort and an independent external validation cohort. Model performance was evaluated using area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value. RESULTS: The model constructed with pre-NAT mpMRI had favorable accuracy for prediction of non-response to NAT in the training cohort (AUC = 0.84), testing cohort (AUC = 0.81), and external validation cohort (AUC = 0.79). The model constructed with both pre-NAT and post-NAT mpMRI had powerful diagnostic value for pathologic complete response in the training cohort (AUC = 0.86), testing cohort (AUC = 0.87), and external validation cohort (AUC = 0.87). CONCLUSIONS: Models constructed with multiphase and multiparameter MRI were able to predict tumor response to NAT with high accuracy and robustness, which may assist in individualized management of LARC.

To investigate the effect of ibuprofen (IBU) on the sulfur-based and calcined pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (SCPAD) systems, two individual reactors with the layered filling (L-SCPAD) and mixed filling (M-SCPAD) systems were established via sulfur and calcined pyrite. Effluent NO3--N concentration of the L-SCPAD and M-SCPAD systems was first increased to 6.44, 0.93 mg/L under 0.5 mg/L IBU exposure and gradually decreased to 1.66 mg/L, 0 mg/L under 4.0 mg/L IBU exposure, indicating that NO3--N removal performance of the M-SCPAD system was better than that of the L-SCPAD system. The variation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) characteristics demonstrated that more EPS was secreted in the M-SCPAD system compared to the L-SCPAD system, which contributed to forming a more stable biofilm structure and protecting microorganisms against the toxicity of IBU in the M-SCPAD system. Moreover, the increased electron transfer impedance and decreased cytochrome c implied that IBU inhibited the electron transfer efficiency of the L-SCPAD and M-SCPAD systems. The decreased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and electron transfer system activity (ETSA) content showed that IBU inhibited metabolic activity, but the M-SCPAD system exhibited higher metabolic activity compared to the L-SCPAD system. In addition, the analysis of the bacterial community indicated a more stable abundance of nitrogen removal function bacteria (Bacillus) in the M-SCPAD system compared to the L-SCPAD system, which was conducive to maintaining a stable denitrification performance. The toxic response mechanism based on the biogeobattery effect was proposed in the SCPAD systems under IBU exposure. This study provided an important reference for the long-term toxic effect of IBU on the SCPAD systems.

Here, polypyrrole (PPY) was first used to the bioreduction of toxic selenite, while the acceleration effect and mechanism were explored. Experiment results suggested that PPY could enhance the selenite bioreduction from 0.42 to 1.04 mg/(L·h). The tests of electrochemical analysis and cytochrome c (cyt-c) content confirmed that PPY promoted the intracellular/intracellular electron transfer of Shewanella oneidensis·MR-1 in selenite bioreduction process. The enhancement of metabolic activity by PPY contributed to biological detoxification, which was manifested in the increased extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), electron transfer system activity (ETSA), membrane permeability and enzyme activity. Transcriptome analysis of DEGs, KEGG pathway enrichment and GO functional classification verified that the environmental adaptability of Shewanella oneidensis·MR-1 was enhanced with the addition of PPY. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicated that PPY promoted the biosynthesis of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), which was beneficial to reduce cell damage. Combined with the above results, a multifaceted synergistic facilitation mechanism based on "conductive cross-linking network" was elaborated from electron transfer, microbial metabolism and environmental adaptability. This study shed light the effect of conductive polymers (CPs) on selenite bioreduction and provided new insights into the bioremediation of toxic pollutants.

BACKGROUND: The eighth edition of nodal classification is defined only by the anatomical location of metastatic lymph nodes and has limited prognostic discrimination power. The authors aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance and discriminatory capability of the number of metastatic lymph nodes (nN) in resected nonsmall cell lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with stage IA to IIIB resected nonsmall cell lung cancer between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2013 were analyzed as a Chinese cohort. The optimal thresholds for the nN classification were determined by the X-tile. The receiver operating characteristic curve, net reclassification improvement and standardized net benefit calculated by decision curve analysis was estimated to quantify the nN classification's performance in prognostic stratification. External validation in the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database was performed to test the robustness of the nN classification. RESULTS: Both cohorts showed a stepwise prognosis deterioration with increasing nN. One to three, four to six, and more than six were selected as optimal thresholds of nN classification in the Chinese cohort, which included 4432 patients, then validated in the SEER cohort ( n =28 022 patients). Multivariate Cox analysis showed the nN classification was an independent predictive factor for overall survival in both cohorts (Chinese cohort and SEER cohort: N 0 vs. N 1-3 , P <0.001; N 0 vs. N 3-6 , P <0.001; N 0 vs. N >6 , P <0.001). And prognostic discriminatory capability was improved in the nN classification compared with location-based N classification [5-year NRI score, 0.106 (95% CI: 0.049-0.132) and 5-year time-independent AUC, 0.593 (95% CI: 0.560-0.625) vs. 0.554 (95% CI: 0.520-0.588), P <0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: The nN classification tended to be a superior prognostic indicator than the location-based N classification. The number of metastatic lymph nodes should be considered in the future revision of the TNM system.

A novel integrated sulfur fixed-film activated sludge in SBR system (IS0FAS-SBR) was proposed to treat the low C/N ratio municipal wastewater. The effluent total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) and PO43--P decreased from 17 mg/L and 3.5 mg/L to 8.5 mg/L and 0.5 mg/L, and higher nitrogen removal efficiency was contributed by the autotrophic denitrification. Microbial response characteristics showed that catalase (CAT), reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) alleviated the oxidative stress of sulfur carrier to maintain cell activity, while metabolic activity analysis indicated that the electron transfer rate was enhanced to improve mixotrophic denitrification efficiency. Meanwhile, the increased key enzyme activities further facilitated nitrogen removal and sulfur oxidation process. Additionally, the microbial community, functional proteins and genes revealed a niche equilibrium of C, N, S metabolic bacteria. Sulfur autotrophic in-situ coupled SBR system enlarged a promising strategy for treatment of low C/N ratio municipal wastewater.

Electroactive biofilms (EABs) play a crucial role in environmental bioremediation due to their excellent extracellular electron transfer (EET) capabilities. However, Cd2+ can have toxic effects on the electrochemical performance of EABs, and the comprehensive inhibition mechanism of EABs in response to Cd2+ shock remains elusive. This study indicated that Cd2+ shock significantly reduced biomass and increased oxidative stress in EABs at the cellular level. The bacterial viability of EABs in phase III under 0.5 mM Cd2+ shock (EABCd2+-III0.5) decreased by 16.31% compared to EABCK-III. Moreover, intracellular NADH, c-Cyts, and the abundance of electroactive species were essential indicators to evaluate EET behavior of EABs. In EABCd2+-III0.5, these indicators decreased by 26.32%, 33.40%, and 20.65%, respectively. Structural equation modeling analysis established quantitative correlations between core components and electrochemical activity at cellular and community levels. The correlation analysis revealed that the growth and electron transfer functions of EABs were predictive indicators for their electrochemical performance, with standardized path coefficients of 0.407 and 0.358, respectively. These findings enhance our understanding of EABs' response to Cd2+ shock and provide insights for improving their performance in heavy metal wastewater.

INTRODUCTION: The benefits of adjuvant chemoradiation therapy (CRT) for heterogeneous pathological N2 (pN2) diseases remain unclear in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aimed to investigate suitable pN2 patients for adjuvant CRT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study retrospectively reviewed the data of patients with pN2 NSCLC in Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital from January 2012 to December 2016. Included cases were subdivided as highest mediastinal lymph node (HM) (n = 732) metastasis and non-HM metastasis (n = 677) groups according to the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). Furthermore, the Kaplan-Meier and Cox models were used to evaluate the prognostic benefits of adjuvant CRT in heterogeneous pN2 subgroups. RESULTS: A total of 1409 patients were enrolled in this study, with a median follow-up time of 63.8 months. Patients with HM involvement had worse prognoses (p < 0.001 for recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS)). Furthermore, the survival improvement of adjuvant CRT was significant for these patients (p < 0.001 for RFS and p = 0.032 for OS), regardless of whether it was single (p < 0.001 for RFS and p = 0.029 for OS) or multiple pN2 (p < 0.001 for RFS and p = 0.026 for OS) diseases. According to multivariable cox analysis, the long-term RFS and OS in the cancerous HM group were independently predicted by pathological N stage (p = 0.002 for RFS and p < 0.001 for OS) and adjuvant CRT (p < 0.001 for RFS and p = 0.011 for OS). CONCLUSION: Metastatic HM was associated with a worse prognosis in pN2 disease. Our analysis supported that adjuvant CRT significantly improved both RFS and OS for these patients.

The contribution of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) to anthropogenic mercury and CO2 emissions have become increasingly important over the past decade. This study developed an inventory of anthropogenic mercury emissions and CO2 emissions during the period of 2014-2020, of MSWI process in China using a bottom-up inventory at the plant level. Overall, national MSWI anthropogenic mercury emissions increased from 2014 to 2020 by province. It was estimated that total 8321.09 kg of anthropogenic mercury emissions from 548 MSWI plants were scattered in 31 provinces of mainland China in 2020. The average intensity of mercury emission in China was 0.06 g·t-1 in 2020, which was much lower than the pre-2010 level. Furthermore, the increased CO2 emission generated by MSWI from 2014 to 2020 is 1.97 times. Anthropogenic mercury emissions and CO2 emissions were concentrated mainly in developed coastal provinces and cities. The general uncertainty of national mercury emissions and CO2 emissions was estimated to be -123% to 323% and -130% to 335%, respectively. Furthermore, future emissions were predicted from 2030 to 2060 based on different scenarios of the independent and collaborative effects of control proposals, the results indicate that the enhancement of advanced air pollution control technologies and effective management of MSWI represent pivotal factors in realizing future reductions in CO2 and mercury emissions. The findings will supplement those for mercury and CO2 emissions, and be useful for relevant policy-making and to improve urban air quality, as well as human health.

The effect of ibuprofen (IBU) on the sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) process and microbial toxic response mechanism were investigated. Nitrate removal performance was inhibited by high IBU concentrations (10 and 50 mg/L), and the effect of low IBU concentrations (1 mg/L) on nitrate removal performance was negligible. The low IBU concentration induced basal oxidative stress for microbial self-protection, while the high IBU concentration induced high-intensity oxidative stress to damage the microbial cell membrane structure. Electrochemical characterization showed that the low IBU concentration stimulated the electron transfer efficiency, which was inhibited at the high IBU concentration. Moreover, the variation content of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and nitrate reductase showed that metabolic activity increased at low IBU concentrations and decreased at high IBU concentrations during the sulfur autotrophic nitrate reduction process. This study proposed the hormesis toxic response mechanism of the SAD process to IBU exposure.

To remove residual nitrate from anammox process and achieve efficient nitrogen removal, a two-stage system (TAS) with the two individual reactors and a one-stage system (OAS) with the spatial functional areas in one reactor were established via anammox coupling sulfur autotrophic denitrification. The total nitrogen removal efficiency (TNRE) of OAS system (97.85 ± 1.92%) was higher than that of TAS system (93.63 ± 1.87%) under the influent NH4+-N and NO2--N of 227 and 300 mg/L. Meanwhile, the responses of microbial metabolism to high nitrogen load were investigated in term of microbial metabolites, electron transfer and metabolic activity. Microbial metabolites characteristics demonstrated that the OAS system secreted more EPS with lower protein (PN)/polysaccharide (PS) ratio than that in the TAS system, which was beneficial to protect bacteria from high nitrogen load. Electrochemical analysis suggested that the secretion of electron conductive substance (such as PN, PS) and redox active substances (such as flavin mononucleotide, the binding of flavins and cytochrome c on the outer membrane) were increased in the OAS system, which promoted the electron transfer efficiency. Moreover, the electron transport system activity (ETSA) values and ATP contents in OAS system were higher than that in the TAS system, which indicated that metabolic activity was improved in OAS system under the stimulation of high nitrogen load. Additionally, the bacterial community analysis indicated that the functional bacteria of Candidatus_Kuenenia and Armatimonadetes_gp5 had higher abundance in the OAS system than that in the TAS system, which was beneficial to realize the stable nitrogen removal performance. Overall, the responses mechanism of the OAS system was established to explain the resistant to high nitrogen load.

The role of Fe(II) on the humic acid (HA) transformation and the effects of humic acid Fe (HA-Fe) on simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) system were investigated. After adding Fe(II), the HA content decreased and the HA inhibition on the SNAD system was released. Results showed that Fe(II) and HA formed the lower water-soluble HA-Fe, promoting the HA removal. HA-Fe with stronger electron transfer capacity constituted the interface with microorganisms to forming the biogeobattery effect. This accelerated the microbial electron transfer, as well as improved the key enzymes and ATP, indicating that HA-Fe stimulated the microbial activity of the SNAD system. Microbial community and quorum sensing analysis further demonstrated that HA-Fe enhanced the mutual symbiosis between electroactive and nitrogen removal bacteria, to ensure the stability of the SNAD system. The study provided references for efficient HA removal and revealed the biogeobattery effect of HA-Fe in the SNAD system.
