RESUMO

The degradation process of a red iron oxide epoxy coating on three kinds of metals under a periodic cycling exposure to 3.5 wt% NaCl solution (45 °C 12 h + 25 °C 12 h) was comparatively studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The influence of the metal substrates (carbon steel, brass, and Al alloy) on the protection performance of the coating was analyzed using variations in the electrochemical and chemical parameters. The failure criteria of the coating were discussed. The results show that the coating on the three substrates presents different failure times, with the coating on steel presenting the shortest time and the coating on Al alloy the longest time. The characteristics of metal substrates and their corrosion products influence the coating failure behavior. The corrosion products with loose and hygroscopic properties of steel and brass have promoting effects on the diffusion of water through the coating. The passive film of the Al alloy substrate and the formation of salt film containing Cl- have corrosion-inhibiting effects on the substrate. Evaluation of the coating performance by |Z|0.01Hz should consider the characteristics of the metal substrates.

RESUMO

Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) has great potential in cancer therapy. However, its efficacy in numerous tumors is restricted due to myelotoxicity, thereby limiting the dose of radionuclide. To increase tumor radiosensitivity, we incorporated the recombinant lentivirus into the EJ cells (bladder cancer [BC] cells), and examined the combined anti-tumor effects of RIT with 131I-BDI-1(131I-monoclonal antibody against human BC-1) and gene therapy (GT). The recombinant lentivirus was constructed and packed. The animal xenograft model was built and when the tumor reached about 0.5 cm in diameter, the mice were randomly separated into four groups: (1) RIT + GT: the xenografts were continuously incorporated with the recombinant lentivirus for two days. And 7.4 MBq 131I-BDI-1 was IV-injected, and 10 mg prodrug 5-fluorocytosine (FC) was IV-injected for 7 days, (2) RIT: same dose of 131I-BDI-1 as the previous group mice, (3) GT: same as the first group, except no 131I-BDI-1, and (4) Untreated. Compute tumor volumes in all groups. After 28 days the mice were euthanized and the tumors were extracted and weighed, and the inhibition rate was computed. The RIT + GT mice, followed by the RIT mice, exhibited markedly slower tumor growth, compared to the control mice. The tumor size was comparable between the GT and control mice. The tumor inhibition rates after 28 days of incubation were 42.85 ± 0.23%, 27.92 ± 0.21% and 0.57 ± 0.11% for the four groups, respectively. In conclusion, RIT, combined with GT, suppressed tumor development more effectively than RIT or GT alone. This data highlights the potent additive effect of radioimmune and gene therapeutic interventions against cancer.

RESUMO

Salmonella is a rod-shaped, Gram-negative zoonotic pathogen that poses a serious global socioeconomic and public health threat. Rapid and accurate detection of Salmonella spp. is critical for effective control of its infection. In this study, an accurate, sensitive and specific graphene oxide-assisted accelerated strand exchange amplification (GO-ASEA) method for rapid detection of Salmonella spp. was developed and validated. The detection limit of the GO-ASEA method was 8.6 × 101 fg µL-1 of Salmonella genomic DNA or 1 × 101 CFU g-1 of Salmonella in spiked chicken faeces free of pre-enrichment. And the GO-ASEA method could specifically detect Salmonella spp. without cross-reactivity with other enteric pathogens. In addition, the novel method achieved Salmonella detection within 30 min and was validated using 209 clinical samples, showing its good clinical applicability. Therefore, the GO-ASEA method is a new optional tool for the rapid detection of pathogenic microorganisms, which is ideal for food safety monitoring and high-throughput detection.

RESUMO

AIM: Lysine-Specific Demethylase 1 (LSD1) inhibitors have been developed and reached the clinic, but its effect in combination with cytotoxic chemotherapy is unclear. Here, we investigated the anti-tumor effect of LSD1 inhibitor GSK-LSD1 and its anti-tumor effect with the DNA damage drug doxorubicin (DOX) in gastric cancer (GC) cells. METHODS: Cells were treated with different concentrations of GSK-LSD1 to examine the anti-tumor effect versus cell viability by MTT and cell cycle arrest by flow cytometry. To explore whether LSD1 inhibitors can increase the anti-tumor effect of DNA damage drugs, cells were treated with DOX for 48 h after pretreatment with GSK-LSD1 for 48 h. Cell viability was detected by MTT and apoptosis-related proteins were examined by Western blot. Furthermore, anti-tumor efficacy of combination GSK-LSD1 with DOX was also measured in MGC-803 xenografts model in nude mice. RESULTS: The results showed that LSD1 was highly expressed in GC cell lines. Inhibition of LSD1 has a weak effect on cell viability and cell cycle. Moreover, LSD1 inhibitors pretreatment could significantly increase the anti-tumor effect of DOX. Further study found that inhibition of LSD1 can significantly enhance DOX-induced the apoptosis, accompanied by down-regulation of antiapoptotic Bcl-2 expression and up-regulation of proapoptotic Bax expression. We also confirmed that inhibition of LSD1 can sensitize the anti-tumor effect of DOX in vivo. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the LSD1 inhibitor GSK-LSD1 has a weak inhibitory effect on the viability and cell cycle of GC cells, but can enhance the sensitivity of DOX.

RESUMO

Osteoporosis is a general bone-related ailment characterized by reduced bone density and quality, elevated bone fragility, and fractures. It was reported that both aged men and women has an increased risks of osteoporosis. The current research work focused to unveil the beneficial roles of ponicidin treatment in the proliferation and calcium deposition on the osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. The effect of 5 and 10 µg/ml of ponicidin on the cell proliferation was assessed. The viability of ponicidin-supplemented MG-63 cells was inspected by MTT test. The contents of osteocalcin, collagen, and ALP activity in the ponicidin administered cells were assessed by kits. The level of calcium mineralization was examined by ARS staining technique. The ponicidin treatment remarkably improved the proliferation of MG-63 cells. The ponicidin did not affect the MG-63 cells viability but promoted its viability 24- and 48-h treatment. The contents of osteocalcin, collagen, and ALP activity in the 5 and 10 µg/ml of ponicidin-supplemented MG-63 cells were found increased than the control cells. The ponicidin also increased the level of calcium deposition in MG-63 cells, which is assessed by ARS staining. In conclusion, it was clear that ponicidin improved the proliferation and calcium mineralization in a MG-63 cells. Therefore, it was clear that ponicidin has helpful roles on the new bone development as a hopeful therapeutic candidate to treat the bone-related disease like osteoporosis.

RESUMO

Palygorskite (Pal), a clay nanoparticle, has been demonstrated to be a vehicle for drug delivery. Copper has antibacterial properties, and zinc is an essential micronutrient for intestinal health in animals and humans. However, whether copper/zinc-modified Pal (Cu/Zn-Pal) can protect chickens from Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) infection remains unclear. In this study, three complexes (Cu/Zn-Pal-1, Cu/Zn-Pal-2, and Cu/Zn-Pal-3) were prepared, and Cu/Zn-Pal-1 was shown to be the most effective at inhibiting the growth of S. Typhimurium in vitro, whereas natural Pal alone had no inhibitory effect. In vivo, Cu/Zn-Pal-1 reduced S. Typhimurium colonization in the intestine of infected chickens and relieved S. Typhimurium-induced organ and intestinal mucosal barrier damage. Moreover, this reduction in Salmonella load attenuated intestinal inflammation and the oxidative stress response in challenged chickens. Additionally, Cu/Zn-Pal-1 modulated the intestinal microbiota in infected chickens, which was characterized by the reduced abundance of Firmicutes and the increased abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Our results indicated that the Cu/Zn-Pal-1 complex may be an effective feed supplement for reducing S. Typhimurium colonization of the gut.

RESUMO

We sought to systematically evaluate diagnostic performance of four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) in the localization of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands (HPGs) in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). We calculated the pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), and diagnostic odds ratios (DOR) of 4D-CT on a per-lesion level, as well as pooled sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) on a per-patient level with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Additionally, we plotted summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curves and evaluated the areas under the curves (AUC). A total of 16 studies were included in the analysis. Their pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, NLR, and DOR of 4D-CT on per-lesion level were 75% (95%CI: 66-82%), 85% (95%CI: 50-97%), 4.9 (95%CI: 1.1-21.3), 0.30 (95%CI: 0.19-0.45), and 17 (95%CI: 3-100), respectively, with an AUC of 81% (95%CI: 77-84%). We also observed heterogeneity in sensitivity (I2 = 79%) and specificity (I2 = 94.7%), and obtained a pooled sensitivity of 81% (95%CI: 70-90%) with heterogeneity of 81.9% (p < 0.001) and PPV of 91% (95%CI: 82-98%) with heterogeneity of 80.8% (p < 0.001), based on a per-patient level. Overall, 4D-CT showed moderate sensitivity and specificity for preoperative localization of HPG(s) in patients with pHPT. The diagnostic performance may improve with 4D-CT's promotion to first-line use on a lesion-based level, further research is needed to confirm the results.

RESUMO

Tumorigenesis is associated with metabolic abnormalities and genomic instability. Microsatellite mutations, including microsatellite instability (MSI) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH), are associated with the functional impairment of some tumor-related genes. To investigate the role of MSI and LOH in sporadic breast tumors in canines, 22 tumors DNA samples and their adjacent normal tissues were evaluated using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and silver staining for 58 microsatellites. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, promoter methylation analysis and immunohistochemical staining were used to quantify gene expression. The results revealed that a total of 14 tumors (6 benign tumors and 8 breast cancers) exhibited instability as MSI-Low tumors. Most of the microsatellite loci possessed a single occurrence of mutations. The maximum number of MSI mutations on loci was observed in tumors with a lower degree of differentiation. Among the unstable markers, FH2060 (4/22), ABCC9tetra (4/22) and SCN11A (6/22) were high-frequency mutation sites, whereas FH2060 was a high-frequency LOH site (4/22). The ABCC9tetra locus was mutated only in cancerous tissue, although it was excluded by transcription. The corresponding genes and proteins were significantly downregulated in malignant tissues, particularly in tumors with MSI. Furthermore, the promoter methylation results of the adenosine triphosphate binding cassette subfamily C member 9 (ABCC9) showed that there was a high level of methylation in breast tissues, but only one case showed a significant elevation compared with the control. In conclusion, MSI-Low or MSI-Stable is characteristic of most sporadic mammary tumors. Genes associated with tumorigenesis are more likely to develop MSI. ABCC9 protein and transcription abnormalities may be associated with ABCC9tetra instability.

RESUMO

In this research, a proto-type study we have conducted, where we have synthesized tungsten based composite materials which are tungsten along with combined oxides of other elements like calcium, scandium, barium, and aluminium in the form of powder with bones powder of mice devised by high energy ball mill and later on fabricating high dense pellets by sintering by spark plasma. The particle sizes of the composite materials are found to be 1-2 µm, as evidenced by the electron microscope, suggesting synthesized materials are of micron size. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of sintered pellets are well confirmed by electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) which illustrate the greater percentage of tungsten presents in the profound scan areas with other elements of the composite. The absence of pores across the 3D geometry suggesting dense sample, which is quite revealed by the X-ray tomography inspection. The prepared sintered pellets from the tungsten based composites are found to be ≈ 99.5% density with the observation of tungsten to be accumulated uniformly across the scan regions along with focussed hot spots as implied by EPMA. This study paves the way, to examine how the tungsten accumulation and the distribution with the other elements for future understanding in bone tissue engineering application and the in vivo specification of tungsten.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of retrograde intramedullary nail (RIN) revision surgeries for locking compression plate (LCP) failure in distal femoral fractures. METHODS: This retrospective study included 13 patients who suffered from metalwork failures after they initially underwent open reduction and LCP fixation. In patients who eventually underwent RIN revision from January 2014 to December 2016, range of motion (ROM) and Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) scores obtained before surgery and at the final follow-up time were analysed. RESULTS: The average operative time was 155 minutes (range, 120-210 minutes), and the average blood loss volume was 650 ml (range, 200-1350 ml). There were two cases of complications (15.38%): one was calf muscle vein thrombosis, and the other was a superficial infection. No deep tissue infection or deep vein thrombosis was observed post-operatively. The average follow-up time was 16 months (range, 12-24 months). All fractures healed in a mean of 6.5 months (range, 4-12 months), and one patient underwent an additional bone graft surgery that did not involve a bone graft during the RIN revision operation (this eventually healed at 12 months post-operatively). The mean ROM before the operation was 86.92 ± 12.34°. At the final follow-up, the mean ROM was 112.69 ± 9.27°. There was a significant difference between pre-operative and post-operative ROM (P < 0.01). The mean HSS score improved significantly from 38.85 ± 9.62 points pre-operatively to 79.62 ± 5.42 points post-operatively. There was a significant difference between pre-operative and post-operative HSS scores (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: RIN revision surgery achieved excellent clinical results in patients with LCP failure.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the expression of Vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and very late appearing antigen-4 (VLA-4) cytokines in MM (multiple Myeloma). METHOD: Forty patients with MM are selected as the experimental group and 30 healthy persons as the control group. Flow cytometry is used to detect the expression of VCAM-1 (CD106), VLA-4 (CD49d), CD38 and CD138 antigens in experimental group and control group. ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) is used to detect the concentration of VCAM-1 in serum of experimental group and control group. RT-PCR is used to detect the expression of VCAM-1. RESULTS: The positive rate and antigen expression rate of VACM-1 antigen in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). There were statistical differences of VLA-4 and VCAM-1 antigens between the initial diagnosis group and the relapse/refractory group, and between the relapse/refractory group and the platform stage group (P < 0.05). There were significant differences between VLA-4 antigen and VACM-1 antigen, phase I and phase II, and between phase I and phase III (P < 0.05). The concentration of VCAM-1 and the expression of VCAM-1 mRNA in the experimental group were significantly higher than (P < 0.01). In the different stages of ISS (International Staging System) and different disease groups in the experimental group, the concentration of VCAM-1 and the expression level of VCAM-1 mRNA are significantly different among the three groups of stage I, II and III (P < 0.01). There is a significant difference between the initial diagnosis group, the relapse/refractory group and the platform group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There are abnormal expressions of adhesion molecules VCAM-1 and VLA-4 in multiple myeloma patients, which are related to ISS staging.

RESUMO

Early diagnosis of mammary gland tumors is a challenging task in animals, especially in unspayed dogs. Hence, this study investigated the role of microsatellite instability (MSI), MMR gene mRNA transcript levels and SNPs of MMR genes in canine mammary gland tumors (CMT). A total of 77 microsatellite (MS) markers in 23 primary CMT were selected from four breeds of dogs. The results revealed that 11 out of 77 MS markers were unstable and showed MSI in all the tumors (at least at one locus), while the other markers were stable. Compared to the other markers, the ABC9TETRA, MEPIA, 9A5, SCNA11 and FJL25 markers showed higher frequencies of instability. All CMT demonstrated MSI, with eight tumors presenting MSI-H. The RT-qPCR results revealed significant upregulation of the mRNA levels of cMSH3, cMLH1, and cPMSI, but downregulation of cMSH2 compared to the levels in the control group. Moreover, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were observed in the cMSH2 gene in four exons, i.e., 2, 6, 15, and 16. In conclusion, MSI, overexpression of MMR genes and SNPs in the MMR gene are associated with CMT and could be served as diagnostic biomarkers for CMT in the future.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effect on intestinal dysfunction of spinal cord injury (SCI) between the comprehensive therapy of tongdu tiaoshen moxibustion (moxibustion for opening the governor vessel and regulating the spirit) and rehabilitation training and the simple treatment with rehabilitation training. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with intestinal dysfunction of SCI were randomized into a comprehensive therapy group and a rehabilitation group, 30 cases in each one (3 cases were dropped out in each group). On the base of the routine western medicine treatment and rehabilitation training, the bowel training and rectal function training were provided, once a day in the rehabilitation group. In the comprehensive therapy group, on the base of the treatment as the rehabilitation group, the tongdu tiaoshen moxibustion was exerted at Yaoyangguan (GV 3), Mingmen (GV 4), Zhiyang (GV 9), Dazhui (GV 14) and Baihui (GV 20), etc, once a day, 30 min each time. In both groups, the treatment for 4 weeks was as one course and 3 courses of treatment were required. Separately, before treatment, after 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment, the scores of neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) and World Health Organization quality of life scale (WHOQOL-BREF) were observed and the clinical effect was evaluated after 12 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: After treatment, the total effective rate was 88.9% (24/27) in the comprehensive therapy group, which was higher than 74.1% (20/27) in the rehabilitation group (P<0.05). After 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment, NBD scores were all reduced obviously as compared with those before treatment in the two groups (all P<0.01). After 8 and 12 weeks of treatment, NBD scores in the comprehensive therapy group were lower than the rehabilitation group (both P<0.05). After 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment, the scores of all of the domains (psychology, physiology, social relations and environment) in WHOQOL-BREF were higher than those before treatment in the two groups (all P<0.01). After 4 weeks of treatment, the scores in the psychology and physiology domains in the comprehensive therapy group were higher than the rehabilitation group (all P<0.05). After 8 and 12 weeks of treatment, the scores of all of the domains in the comprehensive therapy group were higher than the rehabilitation group (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The comprehensive treatment of tongdu tiaoshen moxibustion and rehabilitation training achieves the better effect on intestinal dysfunction of SCI than the simple rehabilitation training and greatly improves the quality of life in SCI patients.

RESUMO

The interest in the design and controlled fabrication of dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (DMSNs) emanates from their widespread application in drug-delivery carriers, catalysis and nanodevices owing to their unique open three-dimensional dendritic superstructures with large pore channels and highly accessible internal surface areas. A variety of synthesis strategies have been reported, but there is no basic consensus on the elucidation of the pore structure and the underlying formation mechanism of DMSNs. Although all the DMSNs show a certain degree of similarity in structure, do they follow the same synthesis mechanism? What are the exact pore structures of DMSNs? How did the bimodal pore size distributions kinetically evolve in the self-assembly? Can the relative fractions of small mesopores and dendritic large pores be precisely adjusted? In this review, by carefully analysing the structures and deeply understanding the formation mechanism of each reported DMSN and coupling this with our research results on this topic, we conclude that all the DMSNs indeed have the same mesostructures and follow the same dynamic self-assembly mechanism using microemulsion droplets as super templates in the early reaction stage, even without the oil phase.

RESUMO

Few information of the function of stearoyl-coenzyme A (CoA) desaturase (SCD) in apicomplaxan parasite has been obtained. In this study, we retrieved a putative fatty acyl-CoA desaturase (TGGT1_238950) by a protein alignment with Plasmodium falciparum SCD in ToxoDB. A typical Δ9-desaturase domain was revealed in this protein. The putative desaturase was tagged with HA endogenously in Toxoplasma gondii, and the endoplasmic reticulum localization of the putative desaturase was revealed, which was consistent with the fatty acid desaturases in other organisms. Therefore, the TGGT1_238950 was designated T. gondii SCD. Based on CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology, SCD conditional knockout mutants in the T. gondii TATi strain were obtained. The growth in vitro and pathogenicity in mice of the mutants suggested that SCD might be dispensable for tachyzoite growth and proliferation. The SCD-overexpressing line was constructed to further explore SCD function. The portion of palmitoleic acid and oleic acid were increased in SCD-overexpressing parasites, compared with the RH parental strain, indicating that T. gondii indeed is competent for unsaturated fatty acid synthesis. The SCD-overexpressing tachyzoites propagated slower than the parental strain, with a decreased invasion capability and weaker pathogenicity in mice. The TgIF2α phosphorylation and the expression changes of several genes demonstrated that ER stress was triggered in the SCD-overexpressing parasites, which were more apt toward autophagy and apoptosis. The function of unsaturated fatty acid synthesis of TgSCD was consistent with our hypothesis. On the other hand, SCD might also be involved in tachyzoite autophagy and apoptosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Intracoronary (IC) glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors (GPIs) after thrombus aspiration (TA) for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), as compared with percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) alone, is still on debate. To address this issue, we performed a meta-analysis of results from prospective or randomized controlled trials on the topic. METHODS: We searched electronic and printed sources (up to June 20, 2016) according to the selection criteria. Data were abstraction and meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: The cohorts involved 14 articles describing 1,918 participants were included. The incidence of the short-term major adverse cardiac events (MACE) was significantly reduced with intracoronary GPIs after TA (odds ratio [OR]: 0.29; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.13 to 0.65, p=0.003). Benefits were noted for short-term mortality (OR: 0.31; 95% CI: 0.17 to 0.57, p=0.0002) and reinfarction (OR: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.78, p=0.01) in subjects who received intracoronary GPIs after TA. Moreover, the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) trial grade 3 postprocedure (OR: 2.29; 95% CI: 1.72 to 3.04, P<0.00001) and complete ST-segment resolution (STR) rate (OR: 2.68; 95% CI: 1.85 to 3.87, P<0.00001) were both improved with intracoronary GPIs after TA. As a result, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) at short-term follow-up showed a significant difference (OR: 7.33; 95% CI: 5.60 to 9.06, p<0.0001) in favor of the TA and intracoronary GPIs administration. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that intracoronary GPIs may have a synergistic effect with thrombus aspiration on short-term mortality, reinfarction, and cardiac functional recovery.

RESUMO

This study was aimed to research the effect of miR-223 on the inflammatory responses induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells of rat intervertebral disc. Isolated rat NP cells were induced by LPS. Reverse transcriptase quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect gene expression. To detect protein expression, Western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay experiments were applied. The putative targeting relationship between miR-223 and Irak1 was determined using dual-luciferase reporter gene assay. We found that miR-223 was downregulated in LPS-induced NP cells. MiR-223 upregulated the expression of extracellular matrix-related genes (Aggrecan and Collagen II). Matrix degrading enzymes (ADAMTS4, ADAMTS5, MMP3 and MMP13), NO reaction-associated proteins (PGE2, COX-2 and INOS) and the expression of nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling-related proteins were downregulated after miR-233 overexpression. In addition, luciferase reporter assays demonstrated that miR-223 directly targeted Irak1. MiR-223 overexpression could inhibit NF-κB signaling by targeting Irak1, and finally suppress the LPS-induced inflammation in NP cells. © 2018 IUBMB Life, 70(6):479-490, 2018.

RESUMO

This study aims to investigate the contents of trace elements in the brain and serum of male chickens and the effect of selenium-chromium(VI) interaction. A chronic experimental model was established by supplementing 22.14 mg/kg K2Cr2O7 with 0.00, 0.31, 0.63, 1.25, 2.50, and 5.00 mg/kg Na2SeO3 mg/kg B.W. to water for chicken daily. After 14, 28, and 42 days of exposure to the solution, the brain and serum of chickens from each group were collected to detect the levels of Ca, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, and Mg by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Cr(VI) time-dependently accumulated in the brain and serum. The contents of Cr increased both in the brain and serum with prolonged exposure. Cr contents in the brain and serum decreased in all Se groups compared with those in only Cr-treated groups. Ca contents decreased with prolonged exposure and increasing Se dosage. The contents of Cu and Mn increased on the 28th day but decreased on the 42nd day in the brain and serum. Fe and Zn contents decreased in the serum under prolonged exposure and increased on the 28th day but decreased on the 42nd day in the brain. Cr exposure did not significantly affect Mg contents in the brain but slightly decreased those in the serum. Therefore, appropriate doses of Se affected Cr accumulation, leading to adjustments in the contents and correlations of trace elements.
