OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the bond strength of different computer-aided design / computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) hybrid ceramic materials following different pretreatments. METHODS: A total of 306 CAD/CAM hybrid material specimens were manufactured, n = 102 for each material (VarseoSmile Crownplus [VSCP] by 3D-printing; Vita Enamic [VE] and Grandio Blocs [GB] by milling). Each material was randomly divided into six groups regarding different pretreatment strategies: control, silane, sandblasting (50 µm aluminum oxide particles), sandblasting + silane, etching (9% hydrofluorics acid), etching + silane. Subsequently, surface roughness (Ra) values, surface free energy (SFE) were measured. Each specimen was bonded with a dual-cured adhesive composite. Half of the specimens were subjected to thermocycling (5000 cycles, 5-55 °C). The shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed. Data were analyzed by using a two-way analysis of variance, independent t-test, and Mann-Whitney-U-test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Material type (p = 0.001), pretreatment strategy (p < 0.001), and the interaction (p < 0.001) all had significant effects on Ra value. However, only etching on VSCP and VE surface increased SFE value significantly. Regarding SBS value, no significant difference was found among the three materials (p = 0.937), while the pretreatment strategy significantly influenced SBS (p < 0.05). Etching on VSCP specimens showed the lowest mean value among all groups, while sandblasting and silane result in higher SBS for all test materials. CONCLUSIONS: The bond strength of CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic materials for milling and 3D-printing was comparable. Sandblasting and silane coupling were suitable for both millable and printable materials, while hydrofluoric etching should not be recommended for CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic materials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Since comparable evidence between 3D-printable and millable CAD/CAM dental hybrid materials is scarce, the present study gives clear guidance for pretreatment planning on different materials.

OBJECTIVES: An increasing number of CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) hybrid materials have been introduced to the dental market in recent years. In addition, CAD/CAM hybrid materials for additive manufacturing (AM) are becoming more attractive in digital dentistry. Studies on material microstructures using micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have only been available to a limited extent so far. METHODS: One CAD/CAM three-dimensional- (3D-) printable hybrid material (VarseoSmile Crown plus) and two CAD/CAM millable hybrid materials (Vita Enamic; Voco Grandio), as well as one direct composite material (Ceram.x duo), were included in the present study. Cylindrical samples with a diameter of 2 mm were produced from each material and investigated by means of synchrotron radiation µ-CT at a voxel size of 0.65 µm. Different samples from the same materials, obtained by cutting and polishing, were investigated by SEM. RESULTS: The 3D-printed hybrid material showed some agglomerations and a more irregular distribution of fillers, as well as a visible layered macrostructure and a few spherical pores due to the printing process. The CAD/CAM millable hybrid materials revealed a more homogenous distribution of ceramic particles. The direct composite material showed multiple air bubbles and microstructural irregularities based on manual processing. SIGNIFICANCE: The µ-CT and SEM analysis of the materials revealed different microstructures even though they belong to the same class of materials. It could be shown that µ-CT and SEM imaging are valuable tools to understand microstructure and related mechanical properties of materials.

BACKGROUND: The various physical and chemical conditions within the oral cavity are hypothesized to have a significant influence on the behavior of denture adhesives and therefore the overall comfort of denture wearers. As such, this study aims to understand the influence of oral cavity physiological parameters such as temperature (17 to 52 °C), pH (2, 7, 10), and denture adhesive swelling due to saliva (20-120%) on the behavior of denture adhesives. This study further aims to emphasize the need for a collective approach to modelling the in-situ behavior of denture adhesives. METHODS: Rheological measurements were carried out using the Super Polygrip Ultra fresh brand denture adhesive cream to evaluate its storage modulus (G´) and loss modulus (G´´) values at a range of physiologically relevant temperatures, pH values, and degrees of swelling, to represent and characterize the wide variety of conditions that occur within the oral cavity. RESULTS: Rheological data was recorded with respect to variation of temperature, pH, and swelling. Overall, it can be seen that the physiological conditions of the oral cavity have an influence on the rheological properties of the denture adhesive cream. Specifically, our data indicates that the adhesive's mechanical properties are weakly influenced by pH, but do change with respect to the temperature in the oral cavity and the swelling rate of the adhesive. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the collective inter-play of the parameters pH, temperature and swelling ratio have an influence on the behavior of the denture adhesive. The results clearly highlight the need for developing a multi-parameter viscoelastic material model to understand the collective influence of physiological parameters on the performance of denture adhesives. Multi-parameter models can also potentially be utilized in numerically simulating denture adhesives using finite element simulations.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the accuracy of implant placement through three-dimensional planning and fully guided insertion, comparing outcomes between undergraduate and postgraduate surgeons. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients requiring 42 implants in posterior single-tooth gaps were enrolled from the University Clinic for Prosthodontics at the Martin Luther University Halle Wittenberg and the Department of Prosthodontics, Geriatric Dentistry, and Craniomandibular Disorders of Charité University Medicine, Berlin. Twenty-two implants were placed by undergraduate students (n = 18), while 20 implants were placed by trainee postgraduate dentists (n = 5). Pre-operative intraoral scans and cone beam computed tomography images were performed for implant planning and surgical template fabrication. Postoperative intraoral scans were superimposed onto the original scans to analyze implant accuracy in terms of apical, coronal, and angular deviations, as well as vertical discrepancies. RESULTS: In the student group, two implant insertions were performed by the assistant dentist because of intraoperative complications and, thus, were excluded from further analysis. For the remaining implants, no statistically significant differences were observed between the dentist and student groups in terms of apical (p = 0.245), coronal (p = 0.745), or angular (p = 0.185) implant deviations, as well as vertical discrepancies (p = 0.433). CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the viability of fully guided implant placement by undergraduate students, with comparable accuracy to postgraduate dentists. Integration into dental education can prepare students for implant procedures, expanding access and potentially reducing costs in clinical practice. Collaboration is essential for safe implementation, and future research should explore long-term outcomes and patient perspectives, contributing to the advancement of dental education and practice. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount of enamel tooth wear induced by different antagonistic ceramic crown materials in the posterior area within a follow-up period up to 24 months in function. A network meta-analysis was performed to assess the effect of the materials on the mean vertical loss (MVL) of the antagonist enamel tooth surface. DATA: Main search terms used in combination: ceramic, dental materials, metal ceramic, tooth wear and dental enamel. SOURCES: An electronic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL plus hand-searching. STUDY SELECTION: Eligibility criteria included clinical studies reporting on MVL on antagonist's tooth up to 24 months following the permanent crown placement. From a total of 5697 articles, 7 studies reporting on 261 crowns for 177 subjects with 3 ceramic materials (Lithium disilicate, metal-ceramic, monolithic zirconia) were included. Among all, metal-ceramic and zirconia caused significantly higher enamel tooth wear on antagonist teeth, representing 82.5 µm [54.4; 110.6]) and 40.1 µm [22.2; 58.0]) more MVL than natural teeth group. In contrast, lithium disilicate showed only 5.0 µm [-48.2; 58.1]) more MVL than occurs on opposing natural teeth. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review demonstrated that prosthodontic ceramic materials produced significantly more antagonist enamel tooth wear than opposing natural enamel tooth wear, and ceramic material type was correlated to the degree of enamel tooth wear. Additional well-conducted, randomized controlled trials with homogeneous specimens are required due to inadequate sample size and number of the clinical studies included in the analyses. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The amount of wear caused by different restorative materials has a high influence on the antagonistic natural teeth and should therefore be evaluated intensively by the dentist.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the flexural strength and fatigue behavior of a novel 3D-printed composite resin for definitive restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty disc-shaped specimens were manufactured from each of a nanohybrid composite resin (NHC), polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN), and 3D-printed composite resin (3D) with CAD-CAM technology. Biaxial flexural strength (σin ) (n = 30 per group) and biaxial flexural fatigue strength (σff ) (n = 20 per group) were measured using piston-on-three-balls method, employing a staircase approach of 105 cycles. Weibull statistics, relative-strength degradation calculations, and fractography were performed. The results were analyzed with 1-way ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Significant differences in σin and σff among the groups (p < 0.001) were detected. The NHC group provided the highest mean ± standard deviation σin and σff (237.3 ± 31.6 MPa and 141.3 ± 3.8 MPa), followed by the PICN (140.3 ± 12.9 MPa and 73.5 ± 9.9 MPa) and the 3D (83.6 ± 18.5 MPa and 37.4 ± 23.8 MPa) groups. The 3D group exhibited significantly lower Weibull modulus (m = 4.7) and up to 15% higher relative strength degradation with areas of nonhomogeneous microstructure as possible fracture origins. CONCLUSIONS: The 3D-printed composite resin exhibited the lowest mechanical properties, where areas of nonhomogeneous microstructure developed during the mixing procedure served as potential fracture origins. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The clinical indications of the investigated novel 3D-printed composite resin should be limited to long-term provisional restorations. A cautious procedure for mixing the components is crucial before the 3D-printing process, since nonhomogeneous areas developed during the mixing could act as fracture origins.

AIM: The adjustment and transfer of a stable occlusion can be a major challenge in prosthetic rehabilitations. The aim of this study was to assess a non-invasive treatment option for complex prosthetic rehabilitations and occlusal analyses using 3D-printed restorations clinically. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients received a partial or complete rehabilitation with the aid of 3D-printed restorations (n=171). After 12 months of clinical service, all restorations were analyzed using the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. RESULTS: The 12-month clinical data revealed that 3D-printed restorations showed a survival rate of 84.4%. Complications occurred mostly regarding the anatomical form (7%) or marginal integrity (6AC%) and were consequently rated "Charlie" or "Delta." Color stability and color match of 3D-printed restorations were rated "Alpha" in 83% and 73%, respectively, of all restorations. Marginal inflammation was rated "Alpha" in 89% of all restorations. An excellent surface texture and no secondary caries or postoperative sensitivities (100%) were observed. CONCLUSIONS: 3D-printed restorations might be an alternative treatment option for initiating complex prosthetic rehabilitations. Technical complications rarely occurred. Biological complications did not occur at all. The color stability showed promising results after 12 months of clinical service. However, the results should be interpreted with caution. Long-term results with a high number of restorations should be awaited.

OBJECTIVES: Addressing a single-tooth gap in the anterior region, resulting from aplasia or trauma, poses both esthetic and functional challenges. This case report presents the restoration of a young adult with a cleft, exhibiting anterior hypoplasia and aplasia in the canine and incisor regions, using all-ceramic cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses. METHOD AND MATERIALS: After verification of esthetic and functional considerations through a diagnostic wax-up and an intraoral mock-up, three anterior all-ceramic cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses made of veneered zirconium dioxide were planned in the region of the maxillary right lateral incisor and maxillary left canine. The impression was made with an intraoral scanner. The framework fit was evaluated. Glaze firing and full adhesive cementation under rubber dam followed. RESULTS: The final restoration met the patients' expectations and restored facial esthetics and function. CONCLUSIONS: All-ceramic cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses offer a promising minimally invasive therapeutic option for cleft patients.

To date, no scientific data is available regarding the development and radiographic assessment of approximal caries development after the insertion of 3D-printed, non-invasive veneers of different restoration thicknesses. For the present study, non-invasive veneers were fabricated from two different materials for printing and milling (Vita Enamic and VarseoSmile Crown plus). Three different restoration thicknesses (0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 mm) were selected. After digital design, leaving the approximal space free, and manufacturing of the restorations, adhesive insertion followed. All specimens were placed in a demineralizing solution for 28 days. Subsequently, a radiological and fluorescent examination was performed. The present study showed statistically significant interactions for the day (p < 0.0001) and manufacturing method (p < 0.0001) but not for restoration thickness. Additive manufactured restorations showed less radiological caries progression compared to subtractive manufactured restorations after 21 and 28 days (0.7 and 0.9 mm restoration thickness) (p < 0.0001). DIAGNOdent proved that the restoration thickness affected the caries progression within the subtractive group (p < 0.0001). Radiographic and fluorescence examination showed equivalent results regarding approximal caries assessment. For additive manufacturing, less caries progression was shown without consideration of the restoration thickness.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term clinical survival and success rate of veneered zirconia crowns with a modified anatomical framework design after 10 years in function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 36 zirconia crowns were fabricated for 28 patients. An anatomically modified framework design was developed. Crowns were inserted between 2008 and 2009. A follow-up of 19 patients with 28 crowns was conducted in 2020 to document mechanical and biologic parameters. Additionally, a modified version of the pink esthetic score (PES) was documented. Patient satisfaction was assessed using United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. The success and survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS: After more than 10 years of clinical service, the survival rate of the zirconia crowns was 92.9%. Biologic complications occurred in 12% of the examined crowns, whereas technical complications occurred in 54%. Mostly, chippings (50%) and insufficient marginal gaps (50%) were observed. Most crowns were positively evaluated for more than one technical complication. Periodontal conditions with probing depths of up to 3 mm were comparable with measured values before crown delivery (73% to 75%). Most of the crowns had modified PES values of 10 or higher. Patient satisfaction was high. CONCLUSIONS: The modified framework design led to a high survival rate of the crowns but a relatively low success rate. High patient satisfaction and inconspicuous periodontal conditions were demonstrated. Biologic complications occurred far less frequently than technical complications.

During prosthetic rehabilitation after tumor therapy (TT) in the head and neck region, the dentist must assess whether the prognosis of the remaining teeth is sufficiently good or whether implants should be used to anchor dentures. Thus, the aim of the present study was to compare the survival rate of teeth and implants after TT and to evaluate factors potentially influencing implant survival. One hundred fifteen patients (male: 70.3%; mean age: 63.2 ± 12.4 years) having received dental treatment before and after TT at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg were enrolled in the study. Clinical examination including assessment of dental status and stimulated salivary flow rate was performed. Information about disease progression and therapy was retrieved from medical records. After TT, from a total of 1262 teeth, 27.2% had to be extracted. Of 308 implants inserted after TT, 7.0% were lost. Teeth exhibited lower 5-year survival probability (76.8%) than implants (89.9%; p = 0.001). The risk of loss (RL) of implants increased with age, nicotine use, intraoral defects, and RCT. Radiotherapy did not independently increase the RL. Thus, implants seem to be a reliable treatment option in case of progressive tooth decay after TT, particularly after RT.

We aimed to evaluate possible factors influencing the long-term survival of teeth after tumor therapy (TT) to the head and neck region with and without radiation. Between January 2019 and January 2020, patients who underwent TT for head and neck cancer and received dental treatment before and after TT at the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg were enrolled in the study. Clinical examination with assessment of dental status and stimulated salivary flow rate (SFR) was performed and information about disease progression and therapy was retrieved from medical records. Of 118 patients (male: 70.3%; mean age: 63.2 ± 12.4 years), 95 received radiotherapy (RT), and 47 were administered radio-chemotherapy (RCT). The teeth of irradiated patients exhibited a lower 5-year survival probability (74.2%) than those of non-irradiated patients (89.4%). The risk of loss (RL) after RT increased with nicotine use, presence of intraoral defects, reduced SFR, RCT and regarding mandibular teeth, and decreased with crowning following TT. Lower SFR increased the RL even without RT. Consideration of patient's treatment history, individual risk profile, and clinical findings during the prosthetic planning phase could enable earlier, more targeted dental treatment after TT (e.g., timely crowning).

(1) Background: Due to advantages such as avoidance of chipping, pulp-friendly tooth preparation and cost reduction, zirconia is increasingly being used monolithically without veneering. Nevertheless, to enable good aesthetics, various multilayer systems have been developed. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different zirconia multilayer strategies and yttria levels on fracture load, fracture pattern, stress distribution and surface roughness. (2) Methods: Monolithic three-unit anterior FDPs were made from three different color-gradient zirconia multilayer materials with different yttria levels corresponding to varying strength and degrees of translucency grades (Katana HTML, STML, UTML, Kuraray) and one strength-gradient zirconia multilayer material (Katana YML, Kuraray) and artificially aged in a chewing simulator (1.2 × 106 load cycles, 50 N, 2 × 3000 thermocycles, 5−55 °C). Analyses of fracture load, fracture pattern, fracture surfaces, stress distribution and roughness were performed after the fracture load test. Shapiro−Wilk, Kruskal−Wallis, Mann−Whitney U-tests and one-way ANOVA were used (p < 0.05). (3) Results: Fracture loads of the high strength color-gradient material HTML and the strength-gradient material YML were comparable after 5 years of aging (p = 0.645). Increasing yttria levels resulted in a decrease in fracture resistance of 42−57% (p < 0.05). Surface roughness of different zirconia generations is comparable after polishing and aging. (4) Conclusions: Color-gradient multilayer zirconia materials and new strength-gradient zirconia materials with similar yttria levels in the basal layers show comparable mechanical properties and are suitable for anterior FDPs.

BACKGROUND: ceramic veneers, crowns, and other types of restorations are often made using either the press heating technique or the subtractive method. The advent of lithography-based ceramic manufacturing (LCM) allows for the manufacturing of such restorations in an additive way. METHODS: this concept paper describes the first clinical experience in the application of LCM lithium disilicate restorations in vivo for the manufacturing of classic veneers for a patient with severe tooth wear. The applied restorations were analyzed in terms of their marginal fit in metrology software (Geomagic Control X, 3D Systems). Furthermore, the feasibility of 3D printing of non-prep veneers with a 0.1 mm thickness was tested. RESULTS: the classic LCM lithium disilicate veneers were tried in the mouth cavity and demonstrated adequate esthetics and a sufficient marginal fit of 100 µm. Furthermore, the non-prep veneers with a 0.1 mm thickness could be successfully printed using LCM technology and also demonstrated an adequate fit on the model in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: the described technical approach of lithium disilicate 3D printing with LCM technology may pose a valid alternative to subtractive and analog manufacturing and be a game-changing option with the use of additive chairside ceramic fabrication.

The treatment management of patients with hemifacial microsomia (HM) includes both surgical and nonsurgical approaches and depends primarily on the degree of deformity of the facial and skeletal structures. In this context, the combined efforts of the maxillofacial surgeon, the orthodontist, and the prosthodontist are essential for a satisfactory functional and esthetic outcome. Case presentation: A 31-year-old man presented with a chief complaint of facial asymmetry. The patient had been diagnosed with HM on the right side, with severe external ear deformity, and hypoplasia of the facial muscles and the zygomatic bone. The intraoral examination showed a Class I molar and canine relationship with a reduced horizontal overlap and an occlusal plane canting. The maxillary anterior teeth were severely worn due to traumatic occlusion. Orthodontic treatment in conjunction with combined orthognathic surgery was planned to address the facial asymmetry. Ramus distraction osteogenesis was carried out, followed by conventional presurgical orthodontic treatment. The treatment was completed by prosthetic rehabilitation for the reconstruction of the maxillary teeth and fine occlusal adjustment. Conclusion: The cooperation between the orthodontist, surgeon, and prosthodontist becomes indispensable when treating complex cases of HM. An interdisciplinary approach should be adopted from the start of treatment, promoting integrated customized care.

RESUMO

The majority of complete dentures are not initially made for the rehabilitation of an edentulous jaw; in most cases, they replace an existing complete denture. Since the ability to adapt to a new complete denture decreases with age, the replica denture procedure represents a smart opportunity. The aim is to copy the clinically successful parts of the old prosthesis and to change the destroyed parts. There are many advantages of this technique, including increased patient acceptance, especially among older people who may not be able to adapt easily to a new prosthesis. The advantages of digital technology are very apparent in the creation of a replica prosthesis. Various cases are presented in the present article to illustrate the procedure and the advantages of this technique using the example of computer-aided fabrication with the Baltic Denture System.

There has been no research on the prevalence of and factors associated with dental caries in rural southwestern Tanzania among schoolchildren. Determining the prevalence of and factors associated with dental caries will help to assess the need for dental intervention and prophylactic measures among children in the region. In February 2020, a cross-sectional study was conducted in the Wanging'ombe District of the Ilembula Ward. The data were collected through clinical examinations and personal interviews at two primary schools. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify potential risk indicators for caries. The study included 319 students aged 11-12 years (average 11.92 ± 0.27 years). The mean Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth index was 0.24 ± 0.68, and the mean Specific affected Caries Index was 1.66 ± 0.9. The greatest influences on the caries risk were poor oral hygiene (OR 8.05, 95% CI 0.49-133.23), low tooth brushing frequency (OR 3.03, 95% CI 1.26-7.26) and low level of education in parents (OR 2.63, 95% CI 0.99-6.98). Dental caries was low among students in rural areas in the Wanging'ombe District.

PURPOSE: A patient information leaflet (PIL) on oral and dental care during radiotherapy was tested whether and at which time during therapy it would be helpful to increase the knowledge about the therapy and the resulting side effects and the management of these. Additionally, the participants' subjective perception of being well informed about the topic was examined. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Surveys were conducted in August 2018-April 2019, at the University Hospitals Halle and Leipzig (Germany). The study population consisted of patients who were treated with radiotherapy in the head and neck region. Half of them received access to the PIL. The survey was conducted with three different versions of a printout questionnaire, which covered the relevant topics at three different times of therapy. The time the participants were surveyed depended on the time of their first therapy appointment. The items of the questionnaires tested their concrete knowledge and assessed the subjective perception of the level of information received. RESULTS: Of the 81 participants who received the PIL, 93.8% read it and 92.1% of them considered it helpful. The sample comprised 181 participants aged 32 to 85 years (M = 62.9), of which 135 were males, 42 were females, and 4 were unspecified. Evaluation showed a difference of 4.7%; 18.5%; and 13.6% in correct answers between subjects with and without access to the PIL before, during, and after the therapy, respectively. The assessment of the participants' personal information level was independent of their access to the PIL (chi-squared test, p = 0.89). CONCLUSION: Having access to the PIL increased participants' ability to answer the questionnaires correctly. Access to the PIL had no influence on the subjective feeling of being well informed.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to develop an optimally designed and comprehensibly formulated patient information leaflet (PIL) to improve patients' memory of information provided by physicians during a radiotherapy (head and neck area) consultation. This PIL was tested on unaffected probands for its usefulness in clinical practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A panel of experts compiled the main topics using Lawshe's content validity ratio. Flesch's Reading Ease Score (FRE) and the Baker Able Leaflet Design (BALD) index were adapted to appropriate values to determine text comprehensibility and graphic design. The evaluation involving unaffected participants (231 men, 380 women, 21 not specified; mean age = 32 ± 13.63 years, range = 18-79 years) was conducted based on three questionnaires for four groups of respondents with varying prior knowledge of the subject. When answering the questionnaires, only half the participants had access to the PIL. RESULTS: The expert panel included 59 out of 75 proposed topics. After reformulations, the FRE was adjusted from 38.5 to 51.4. The BALD index ranged from 24 to 26, depending on the printout edition. The evaluation of 632 unaffected participants indicated a difference in the correctly answered items that ranged from 2.86% to 30.76% between participants with and without access to the PIL. CONCLUSION: The general guidelines for the design of written patient information material were met. The evaluation of unaffected volunteers resulted in an advantage by answering the questionnaires after receiving the PIL. This study supports health practitioners in the development, design, and evaluation of written information material using scientific methods. An evaluation should be performed on affected patients.

Removable implant-anchored dentures have become an established treatment concept especially for older, multimorbid patients. This study investigates the retention force (RF) of two different attachment systems. A total of 96 specimens (n = 8 for each condition) were fabricated and RF was measured under different conditions: fatigue (10,000 cycles dislodging), thermal undulation (5/55 °C, 5000 cycles) and implant-angulation (0°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°). The Novaloc system ((N), 0° and 15° abutments, yellow matrix (Y)) was compared to the Locator system ((L), pink (P) and orange (O)). Initial RFs (8.57 ± 0.99 N (NY), 19.39 ± 8.10 N (LP), 8.8 ± 5.28 N (LO)) were reduced by ageing simulation (26% (NY), 66% (LP), 89% (LO); p < 0.001). After thermocycling, Novaloc's RFs decreased by 33% (p < 0.001) while the Locators' RFs increased by 34% (LP: p = 0.002, LO: p = 0.148). In contrast to LP, the RFs of Novaloc abutments and LOs predominantly showed no clinically relevant dependence on implant angulation. Ageing processes tended to result in lower RFs at higher implant angulation. Thus, the Novaloc attachment system offers an alternative to Locator attachments. It is characterized by a comparatively continuous RF-curve over the entire wearing period. Future clinical studies have to be conducted to verify the in vitro demonstrated advantages of the Novaloc system.
