RESUMO

The purpose of this descriptive-exploratory study was to identify profiles of mental health among undergraduate nursing students to understand the relationship between student's mental health profiles and relevant risk and protective factors at the onset of COVID-19. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was employed to cull these students' mental health profiles (yielding 3 profiles) using data collected from 277 participants enrolled in a four-year BSN Program at a large, public institution in the Southeastern United States. Relational analyses of these profiles indicated that students who were the most vulnerable for mental health challenges also had the highest resilience and coping scores.

Introduction: Peru had the world's highest death rate of COVID-19 with 213,000+ deaths and counting (Beaubien, 2021). Hospitalization and care for COVID-19 patients with limited resources has added stress to the shortage of frontline workers and resulted in students filling in the gap in acute care clinical settings. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-19 on mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress, and coping) and grief on undergraduate nursing and pharmacy students in Lima, Peru. Methods: This was a quantitative, descriptive study that examined students' self-report of mental health and grief at baseline during data collection. Results: Significant findings were reported in coping based on death of family member of COVID-19 (p = .02). Anxiety was positively correlated with grief (Rho = 0.35, p < .001), stress (Rho = 0.53, p < .001), and depression (Rho = 0.76, p < .001). Grief was positively correlated with stress (Rho = 0.25, p < .001) and depression (Rho = 0.39, p < .001). Finally, stress was positively correlated with depression (Rho = 0.51, p < .001). Discussion: This is the first study to explore nursing and pharmacy students' perceptions on how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their mental health.

OBJECTIVES: Given the dynamic and high-stress environment of nursing education today, the need arose for the development and implementation of a novel peer mentoring program to support undergraduate nursing students. Peer mentoring refers to a network of support in which a more skilled or experienced person serves as a role model for a less skilled person for professional development and personal growth. Peer mentoring provides a support system that encourages self-confidence and increases self-worth for both the mentee and the mentor. The undergraduate student peer mentoring program in a large, Southeastern United States, university-based, 4-year school of nursing was created in response to a desire for more support conveyed by upper-level nursing students. METHODS: A model was developed whereby each incoming nursing student (Semester 1) would be paired with a senior nursing student (Semesters 3, 4, or 5). This mentoring dyad was then assigned to a faculty mentor who ensured that the mentoring relationship was functioning in accordance with established guidelines and provided support to both the student mentee and the student mentor. RESULTS: The first cohort was comprised of 20 mentoring dyads. Subsequent cohorts have ranged from 20 to 45 mentoring dyads. To date, over 300 nursing students have participated in the undergraduate peer mentoring program. Based on feedback from student evaluation surveys, both mentors and mentees appreciate and find value in the program. Approximately 93% of student mentors indicated that they would have appreciated such a program when they were first semester nursing students. CONCLUSION: Some of the challenges of navigating nursing programs are not related to lack of academic aptitude. Rather, other challenges, including lack of social support and soft skills needed to successfully complete the first and second semesters of nursing school. These are critical challenges that a peer mentor could help to meet.

RESUMO

This paper describes an innovative teaching strategy and opportunity to foster student resilience and enhance interprofessional collaboration among nursing and social work students, during a Study Abroad Interprofessional Education (IPE) Experience, using a reflective practice framework. This Study Abroad IPE Experience was an opportunity to capitalize on IPE teamwork, communication, and collaboration with the incorporation of reflective journaling as both an evaluative tool for students and faculty and as a mechanism for promoting self-awareness and enhanced mental wellbeing.
