RESUMO

Phthalate acid esters (PAEs), as a common group of plasticizers, are widely present in indoor environments and pose a risk to human health. Indoor dust samples collected from dormitory, classroom, laboratory, and office in multiple universities in China, were analyzed for seven types of PAEs. The total concentrations of seven PAEs (Σ7PAEs) ranged from 4.87 to 360 µg/g, with a median concentration of 51 µg/g, which is lower than that reported by other studies. By using the median concentration of Σ7PAEs as a metric, we assessed the levels of contamination in different microenvironmental, resulting in the following rank order: dormitory > classroom > laboratory > office. There are significant differences in the levels of individual PAEs in different microenvironments. Radiation from sunlight, ventilation rates, cleaning frequency, and sprays were influential factors for the concentrations of individual PAEs in indoor dust. The indoor environmental conditions and consumption patterns profoundly affect PAEs levels. The sources of PAEs in classroom and office were more complex than in dormitory and laboratory. Daily intake of PAEs was applied to calculate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human risk for male students and female students, indicating a low health risk to humans. This is the first study to assess the risk of PAEs in university microenvironments, providing a valuable reference for further research.

Urban green spaces are the soil component in cities that interacts most closely with humans. This study investigated the residues of seven neonicotinoids (NEOs) in soils from urban green spaces within the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region and analyzed the correlation between the residue characteristics and the region's economic development. Notably, we introduced the Nemerow Index method, a comprehensive approach, to quantify the overall pollution level of NEOs in the soil of urban park green spaces and utilized this to assess the cumulative exposure probability risks for different populations in this scenario. We found that: (1) The soil of urban park green spaces exhibited varying degrees of NEOs contamination (Σ7NEOs: N.D.-137.31; 6.25 µg/kg), with imidacloprid and clothianidin constituting the highest proportions (89.46 % and 83.60 %); (2) The residual levels of NEOs in Children's Park were significantly higher than those in community parks within Guangzhou, with an average value of 13.30 µg/kg compared to 3.30 µg/kg; (3) The residual characteristics of NEOs exhibited a positive correlation with regional economic development; specifically, the per capita GDP well correlated with IMIRPF, a summation of seven NEOs in imidacloprid equivalents via relative potency factors (R2 =0.86). Regions with higher economic development typically exhibited elevated IMIRPF levels; (4) The fitted cumulative probability distributions for average daily exposure doses revealed that children's exposure was an order of magnitude higher than adults'. Despite this, the exposure risks for both groups remained within acceptable limits.

In recent years, the toxic effects of microplastics (MPs) on aquatic organisms have been increasingly recognized. However, the developmental toxicity and underlying mechanisms of photoaged MPs at environmental concentrations remain unclear. Therefore, the photodegradation of pristine polystyrene (P-PS) under UV irradiation was used to investigate, as well as the developmental toxicity and underlying mechanisms of zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to P-PS and aged polystyrene (A-PS) at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1-100 µg/L). Mortality, heart rate, body length, and tail coiling frequency of zebrafish larvae were the developmental toxicity endpoints. A-PS had increased crystallinity, the introduction of new functional groups, and higher oxygen content after UV-photoaging. The toxicity results showed that exposure to A-PS resulted in more adverse developmental toxicity than exposure to P-PS. Exposure to A-PS induced oxidative damage, as evidenced by elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and DNA damage, and led to decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and causes the release of cytochrome c (cyt c) from the mitochondria. The caspase-3/-9 activation signaling pathways may cause developmental toxicity via mitochondrial apoptosis. Significant changes in the expression of genes were further explored linking with oxidative stress, mitochondria dysfunctions and apoptosis pathways following A-PS exposure. These findings underscore the importance of addressing the environmental applications of aged MPs and call for further research to mitigate their potential risks on aquatic ecosystems and human health.

Sediment is the ultimate sink of environmental pollutants. A total of 128 surface sediment samples were collected from 8 rivers and 3 reservoirs in Maoming City, Guangdong Province. This study assessed the content and distribution of brominated flame retardants in sediments. The acute toxicity effects of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs) in sediments were evaluated using Caenorhabditis elegans as model organisms. The concentration of TBBPA in sediments ranged from not detected (ND) to 12.59 µg/kg and was mainly distributed in the central area, which was affected by the emission of TBBPA from residential and factory. The concentration of HBCDs ranged from ND to 6.31 µg/kg, and the diastereoisomer distribution was consistent, showing a trend close to the South China Sea. The composition pattern of HBCDs in the surface sediments from rivers were 41.73%-62.33%, 7.89%-25.54%, and 18.76%-40.65% for α-, ß-, and γ-HBCD, respectively, and in the sediments from reservoirs were 26.15%-45.52%, 7.44%-19.23%, and 47.04%-61.89% for α-, ß-, and γ-HBCD, respectively. When the sum of concentrations of TBBPA and HBCD in sediments were above high levels, reactive oxygen species in nematodes significantly increased, resulting in an oxidative stress response. Intestinal permeability was also enhanced, causing intestinal damage. In addition, in terms of this study, TBBPA had a greater impact on biotoxicity compared to HBCDs, and more attention should be paid to the toxic effects of the river ecosystem organisms in Maoming City, Guangdong Province. This study can complement the pollution database in the study area and provide basic data for pollution control.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) exhibit excellent flame retardant properties and are widely used in various industries. Among the common BFRs, tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs) pose substantial ecological and human health risks due to their extensive application and long-range transport. This study established 131 sample collection sites along the coast of the South China Sea (SCS) in Guangdong Province to assess the concentration, distribution, inventory, and ecological risk of TBBPA and HBCDs in surface sediments. The concentrations of TBBPA in SCS sediments ranged from < limit of detection (LOD) to 80 µg/kg dry weight (dw), and those of HBCDs from < LOD to 18 µg/kg dw. The diastereoisomers of HBCDs (α-, ß-, and γ-HBCD) in the sediment samples accounted for 36 %, 13 %, and 51 %, respectively. Human activities, particularly those associated with nearby electronic waste disassembly and textile and garment industries, considerably influenced the dispersion of TBBPA and HBCDs. The inventories of TBBPA and HBCDs in Guangdong Province's SCS were estimated to be 3.2 × 105 kg and 7.2 × 104 kg, respectively. The average risk quotient values ranged from <0.01 to 0.016, indicating a low to negligible environmental risk. This study provides deeper insights into the distribution and scientific significance of HBCDs and TBBPA in SCS sediment samples, elucidates the current state of BFR contamination, and offers recommendations for future research on environmental safety and human health in the region.

Due to their significant environmental impact, there has been a gradual restriction of the production and utilization of legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), leading to continuous development and adoption of novel alternatives. To effectively identify the potential environmental risks from crop consumption, the levels of 25 PFAS, including fourteen perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), two precursor substances and nine novel alternatives, in agricultural soils and edible parts of various crops around a fluoride industrial park (FIP) in Changshu city, China, were measured. The concentration of ΣPFAS in the edible parts of all crops ranged from 11.64 to 299.5 ng/g, with perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) being the dominant compound, accounting for an average of 71% of ΣPFAS. The precursor substance, N-methylperfluoro-octanesulfonamidoacetic acid (N-MeFOSAA), was detected in all crop samples. Different types of crops showed distinguishing accumulation profiles for the PFAS. Solanaceae and leafy vegetables showed higher levels of PFAS contamination, with the highest ΣPFAS concentrations reaching 190.91 and 175.29 ng/g, respectively. The highest ΣAlternative was detected in leafy vegetables at 15.21 ng/g. The levels of human exposure to PFAS through crop consumption for various aged groups were also evaluated. The maximum exposure to PFOA for urban toddlers reached 109.8% of the standard value set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In addition, short-chained PFAAs and novel alternatives may pose potential risks to human health via crop consumption.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution, together with its consequential effect on aquatic biota, represent a burgeoning environmental concern that has garnered significant scholarly attention. Thiamethoxam (TMX), a prevalently utilized neonicotinoid insecticide, is renowned for its neurotoxic impact and selective action against targeted pests. The aquatic environment serves as a receptacle for numerous pollutants, such as MPs and neonicotinoid insecticides. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the toxic effects of co-exposure to aged MPs and neonicotinoid insecticides in aquatic organisms. Therefore, we endeavor to elucidate the deleterious impacts of aged polystyrene (PS) and TMX on zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae when present at environmentally relevant concentrations, and to reveal the underlying molecular mechanisms driving these effects. Our study showed that exposure to aged PS, TMX, or their combination notably inhibited the heart rate and locomotion of zebrafish larvae, with a pronounced effect observed under combined exposure. Aged PS and TMX were found to diminish the activity of antioxidative enzymes (SOD, CAT, and GST), elevate MDA levels, and disrupt neurotransmitter homeostasis (5-HT, GABA and ACh). Notably, the mixtures exhibited synergistic effects. Moreover, gene expression related to oxidative stress (e.g., gstr1, gpx1a, sod1, cat1, p38a, ho-1, and nrf2b) and neurotransmission (e.g., ache, ChAT, gat1, gabra1, 5ht1b, and 5ht1aa) was significantly altered upon co-exposure to aged PS and TMX in larval zebrafish. In summary, our findings support the harmful effects of aged MPs and the neonicotinoid insecticides they carry on aquatic organisms. Results from this study enhance our understanding of the biological risks of MPs and insecticides, as well as help fill existing knowledge gaps on neonicotinoid insecticides and MPs coexistence toxicity in aquatic environment.

In order to explore the pollution characteristics, ecological risks, and pollution sources of heavy metals in farmland soils around typical factories in Hunan Province, the content characteristics of eight heavy metals in farmland soils around fluoride factories, leather factories, and plating plants were analyzed. The geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate the pollution and environmental risk of heavy metals. The correlation analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, and principal component analysis were used to analyze the sources of heavy metals. The Monte-Carlo model was used to evaluate the probability risk of regional ecological risk. The results showed that the main pollution elements in the soil were Cd and Zn, and their mean values were 4.46 and 2.73 times the background values, respectively. Zn was at a mild pollution level in the soil of the three typical factories, and Cd was at a moderate pollution level in the whole fluoride factory. The pollution sources of heavy metals in the typical factories were mainly natural sources, industrial activity sources (industrial waste discharge, mineral mining, and smelting activities), traffic sources, etc. The results of potential ecological risk assessment showed that the ecological risk of the fluoride factory was at a high risk level, and the ecological risk of the leather factory and plating plants was at a high risk level. Cd was the main contributing element. The results of Monte-Carlo probabilistic ecological risk assessment reduced the uncertainty of deterministic assessment, which could provide scientific basis for accurate risk management and control in the regions.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants widely distributed in the environment, inducing toxic effects in various organisms. However, the neurotoxicity and underlying mechanisms of simulated sunlight-aged MPs have rarely been investigated. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 µg/L) of virgin polystyrene (V-PS) and aged polystyrene (A-PS) for 120 hpf to evaluate the neurotoxicity. The results demonstrated that simulated sunlight irradiation altered the physicochemical properties (morphology, functional groups, and chemical composition) of V-PS. Exposure to A-PS causes greater toxicity on locomotor ability in larval zebrafish than V-PS. Motor neuron development was disrupted by transgenic (hb9-GFP) zebrafish larvae exposed to A-PS, with significant alterations in neurotransmitter levels (ACh, DA, 5-HT, and GABA) and enzyme activity (AChE, ChAT, and ChE). Further investigation found that exposure to A-PS had a significantly impact on the expression of neurotransmission and neurodevelopment-related genes in zebrafish. These findings suggest that A-PS induces neurotoxicity by its effects on neurotransmission and neurodevelopment. This study highlights the neurotoxic effects and mechanisms of simulated sunlight irradiation of MPs, providing new insights for assessing the ecological risks of photoaged MPs in the environment.

The relationship between zinc (Zn) exposure and abnormal blood lipids including dyslipidemia is contentious. Serum uric acid (SUA) has been reported to be correlated to both Zn exposure and dyslipidemia. The underlying mechanisms of Zn exposure associated with blood lipids and the mediating effects of SUA remain unclear. Therefore, this study analyzed the data from Chinese 2110 adults (mean age: 59.0 years old) in rural areas across China to explore the associations of Zn exposure with blood lipid profiles and dyslipidemia, and to further estimate the mediating effects of SUA in these relationships. The study data showed that urinary Zn was associated with increased levels of blood lipid components triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Moreover, an increased risk of dyslipidemia was observed in the study participants who had higher urinary Zn levels. Compared with the first quartile, the fourth quartile of urinary Zn concentration corresponded to the increase of TG (ß = 0.20, 95 % CI: 0.12, 0.28), LDL-C (ß = 0.06, 95 % CI: 0.01, 0.10) and dyslipidemia risk (OR = 2.16, 95 % CI: 1.50, 3.10), respectively. Elevated urinary Zn was also associated with higher levels of SUA and hyperuricemia risk. The SUA levels were positively related to total cholesterol (TC), TG, LDL-C levels and dyslipidemia risk. Mediation analyses revealed that SUA mediated 31.75 %, 46.16 % and 19.25 % of the associations of urinary Zn with TG, LDL-C levels and dyslipidemia risk, respectively. The subgroup and sensitivity analyses confirmed the positive associations between urinary Zn and blood lipid profiles and the mediating effect of SUA. The national population-based study further enhanced our understanding of the associations between Zn exposure and blood lipid profiles and mediating effect of SUA among generally healthy, middle-aged, and elderly individuals.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging environmental contaminants that often co-exist with tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in the environment. However, the joint effect of TBBPA and photoaged MPs at ambient concentrations remains unknown largely. In this study, the combined toxicity of ultraviolet-aged polystyrene (UV-PS) and TBBPA was investigated in Caenorhabditis elegans. UV irradiation could change the physical and chemical characteristics of polystyrene (PS), and UV-PS (90.218 µg/g) showed a stronger adsorption capacity than PS of 79.424 µg/g. Toxicity testing showed that 1 µg/L UV-PS enhanced the toxic effect of 1 µg/L TBBPA by reducing body length, locomotion behavior, and brood size in nematodes. Using ROS production, lipofuscin accumulation, and expression of gst-4::GFP as endpoints, the combined exposure of UV-PS and TBBPA induced stronger oxidative stress than TBBPA alone. Joint exposure to UV-PS and TBBPA significantly increased of Nile red and blue food dye in its intestinal tract compared to that in the TBBPA exposure group, indicating that co-exposure enhanced intestinal permeability. After co-exposure to UV-PS and TBBPA, the expression of the associated genes detected increased significantly. Therefore, UV-PS enhances the adverse effects of TBBPA through intestinal damage and oxidative stress in nematodes. These findings suggest that the co-presence of photoaged PS and TBBPA results in high environmental risks.

The brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) has been extensively used following restrictions on BDE-209 and thus, been frequently detected in aquatic environment. However, information on impact of DBDPE on fish development and the potential mechanisms remains scarce. In present study, developing zebrafish were employed as a study model. Embryos were exposed until 5 d to DBDPE at concentrations of 0, 3, 30, and 300 µg/L, following which the impact on larval development was investigated. DBDPE bioaccumulation and locomotor hyperactivity were observed in developing zebrafish exposed to DBDPE. Transcriptome and bioinformatics analyses indicated that pathways associated with cardiac muscle contraction and retinol metabolism were notably affected. The mechanisms of DBDPE to induce locomotor abnormality were further investigated by analyzing levels of retinol and retinol metabolites, eye and heart histology, heart rates, and ATPase activity. Our results indicate that locomotor hyperactivity observed in larvae exposed to DBDPE results from abnormal heartbeat, which in turn is attributable to inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase activity. Furthermore, DBDPE did not change larval eye histology and contents of retinoid (retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid). This study provides insight into the mechanisms underlying DBDPE-induced developmental toxicity and highlights the need for addressing the environmental risks for aquatic organisms.

Glucocorticoid plays a key role in the growth and organ maturation of fetus. However, the effect of glucocorticoid on the association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure and fetal growth is still unknown. We detected cord cortisol (active glucocorticoid in human) and 34 PFAS concentrations in the maternal serum samples, which were collected from 202 mother-fetus pairs in the Maoming Birth Cohort from 2015 to 2018. The mediation effect of cord cortisol on the association between maternal PFAS and the neonatal growth index (NGI) was estimated. We found that higher PFAS concentrations were associated with lower NGI in terms of ponderal index, birth weight (BW), head circumference (HC), and its z-scores (BWZ and HCZ) (P < 0.05). Fetal cortisol could mediate 12.6-27.3% of the associations between PFAS and NGI. Specifically, cord cortisol mediated the association between branched perfluorooctane sulfonate (branched PFOS) and HCZ by 20.4% and between perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and HCZ by 27.3%. Our findings provide the first epidemiological data evincing that fetal cortisol could mediate the association between prenatal PFAS exposure and fetal growth. Further investigations are recommended to elucidate the interactions among cord cortisol, PFAS, and fetal growth.

In this research, enrichment factor (EF) and pollution load index were utilized to explore the contamination characteristics of toxic elements (TEs) in park dust. The results exhibited that park dust in the study area was mainly moderately polluted, and the EF values of dust Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu and Sb were all > 1. The concentrations of Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb increased with the decrease of dust particle size. The investigation results of chemical speciation and bioavailability of TEs showed that Zn had the highest bioavailability. Three sources of TEs were determined by positive matrix factorization model, Pearson correlation analysis and geostatistical analysis, comprising factor 1 mixed sources of industrial and transportation activities (46.62%), factor 2 natural source (25.56%) and factor 3 mixed source of agricultural activities and the aging of park infrastructures (27.82%). Potential ecological risk (PER) and human health risk (HHR) models based on source apportionment were exploited to estimate PER and HHR of TEs from different sources. The mean PER value of TEs in the park dust was 114, indicating that ecological risk in the study area was relatively high. Factor 1 contributed the most to PER, and the pollution of Cd was the most serious. There were no significant carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for children and adults in the study area. And factor 3 was the biggest source of non-carcinogenic risk, and As, Cr and Pb were the chief contributor to non-carcinogenic risk. The primary source of carcinogenic risk was factor 2, and Cr was the cardinal cancer risk element.

Pharmaceutical plants are an essential source of antibiotics emitted into the aqueous environment. The monitoring of target antibiotics in pharmaceutical plants through various regions is vital to optimize contaminant release. The occurrence, distribution, removal, and ecological risk of 30 kinds of selected antibiotics in 15 pharmaceutical plants in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) were investigated in this study. Lincomycin (LIN) showed the highest concentration (up to 56,258.3 ng/L) in the pharmaceutical plant influents from Zhongshan city. Norfloxacin (NFX) showed a higher detection frequency than other antibiotics. In addition, the spatial distribution of antibiotics in pharmaceutical plants showed significant differences, with higher concentrations of total antibiotics found in pharmaceutical plant influents in Shenzhen City than those of different regions in PRD. The treatment processes adopted by pharmaceutical plants were commonly ineffective in removing antibiotics, with only 26.7% of antibiotics being effectively removed (average removal greater than 70%), while 55.6% of antibiotics had removal rates of below 60%. The anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (AAO)-membrane bioreactor (MBR) combined process exhibited better treatment performance than the single treatment process. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), ofloxacin (OFL), erythromycin-H2O (ETM-H2O), sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethazine (SMZ), norfloxacin (NFX), and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in pharmaceutical plant effluents posed high or moderate ecological risk and deserve particular attention.

BACKGROUND: Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) are hazardous for kidney function, while the effects of selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) were unexplored for the narrow safe range of intake. Interactions exists between these multiple metal/metalloid exposures, but few studies have investigated the effects. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed among 2210 adults across twelve provinces in China between 2020 and 2021. Urinary As, Cd, Cu, Se and Zn were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Serum creatinine (Scr) and N-acetyl-beta-D glucosaminidases (urine NAG) were quantified in serum and urine, respectively. Kidney function was evaluated by the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). We employed logistic regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models to explore the individual and joint effects of urinary metals/metalloids on the risk of impaired renal function (IRF) or chronic kidney disease (CKD), respectively. RESULTS: Association was found between As (OR = 1.24, 95 % CI: 1.03, 1.48), Cd (OR = 1.65, 95 % CI: 1.35, 2.02), Cu (OR = 1.90, 95 % CI: 1.59, 2.29), Se (OR = 1.51, 95 % CI: 1.24, 1.85) and Zn (OR = 1.33, 95 % CI: 1.09, 1.64) and the risk of CKD. Moreover, we observed association between As (OR = 1.18, 95 % CI: 1.07, 1.29), Cu (OR = 1.14, 95 % CI: 1.04, 1.25), Se (OR = 1.15, 95 % CI: 1.06, 1.26) and Zn (OR = 1.12, 95 % CI: 1.02, 1.22) and the risk of IRF. Additionally, it was found that Se exposure may strength the association of urinary As, Cd and Cu with IRF. Furthermore, it is worth noting that Se and Cu contributed greatest to the inverse association in IRF and CKD, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested that metal/metalloid mixtures were associated with kidney dysfunction, Se and Cu were inverse factors. Additionally, interactions between them may affect the association. Further studies are needed to assess the potential risks for metal/metalloid exposures.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants and cause neurotoxicity in various organisms. However, previous studies that analyzed the effects of MPs mainly focused on virgin polystyrene (V-PS) as representative models of MPs, and the mechanism underlying the neurotoxicity of photoaged polystyrene (P-PS) remains largely unknown. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1-100 µg/L) of V-PS and P-PS(10 µm). The results indicated that UV radiation accelerated the aging process and changed physical and chemical properties of PS. Whereas exposure to both V-PS and P-PS at low concentrations (100 µg/L) significantly reduced the locomotor behavior of zebrafish larvae, P-PS caused more severe neurotoxicity compared to V-PS. The activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and GST) and MDA content were significantly altered in zebrafish exposed to 10-100 µg/L of P-PS. Similarly, exposure to P-PS significantly increased neurotransmitter (5-HT, GABA, DA, and ACh) levels and activity of AChE, ChAT, and ChE. Star plots based on integrated biomarker response (IBR) values showed more incline toward neurotransmitter biomarkers in response to increasing P-PS concentration, and the behavioral parameters negatively correlated with the neurotransmitter biomarkers. Further investigations revealed that the expression of neurotransmission- (e.g., ache, drd3, 5th2c, and gat1) and oxidative stress- (e.g., cat1, sod1, gpx1a, and gstrl) related genes was significantly affected by PS in larval zebrafish. Thus, this study provides new insights on the potential risks of MPs into the environment.

In order to understand the spatial distribution and sources of heavy metals in surface sediments of MaoMing city and to reasonably evaluate the ecological risk of heavy metals in sediments of the study area, the contents of heavy metals (As, Hg, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in surface sediments of eight rivers and three reservoirs were detected, and the risks of heavy metals were assessed using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological disk index (RI), and potential adverse biological impacts (ΣTUs). The sources of heavy metals were analyzed via correlation, principal component analysis (PCA), and positive matrix factorization (PMF). The results showed that the ω(Zn) (147.56 mg·kg-1) and ω(Hg) (0.20 mg·kg-1) were 3.72 and 2.25 times the background value, respectively, and the spatial distributions of Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn were in the order of northern>central>western>southeast. The geo-accumulation index results showed that Zn was at a moderate pollution level, 76.6% of the sampling sites of Hg were at a light-heavy pollution level, and other heavy metals were at a non-light pollution level. The results of potential ecological risk and potential adverse biological impacts indicated that the potential ecological risk index and toxicity effect of Gaozhou Reservoir were higher than those of other rivers, and Hg was the major contributor to heavy metal pollution. The three factors extracted from principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization represented natural sources, agricultural sources, and industrial sources, respectively. Therefore, in order to reduce the health hazards caused by heavy metals in sediments, a prevention and control system for the Hg element should be established.

Heterosis is the phenomenon in which some hybrid traits are superior to those of their parents. Most studies have analyzed the heterosis of agronomic traits of crops; however, heterosis of the panicles can improve yield and is important for crop breeding. Therefore, a systematic study of panicle heterosis is needed, especially during the reproductive stage. RNA sequencing (RNA Seq) and transcriptome analysis are suitable for further study of heterosis. Using the Illumina Nova Seq platform, the transcriptome of ZhongZheYou 10 (ZZY10), an elite rice hybrid, the maintainer line ZhongZhe B (ZZB), and the restorer line Z7-10 were analyzed at the heading date in Hangzhou, 2022. 581 million high-quality short reads were obtained by sequencing and were aligned against the Nipponbare reference genome. A total of 9000 differential expression genes were found between the hybrids and their parents (DGHP). Of the DGHP, 60.71% were up-regulated and 39.29% were down-regulated in the hybrid. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that 5235 and 3765 DGHP were between ZZY10 and ZhongZhe B and between ZZY10 and Z7-10, respectively. This result is consistent with the transcriptome profile of ZZY10 and was similar to Z7-10. The expression patterns of DGHP mainly exhibited over-dominance, under-dominance, and additivity. Among the DGHP-involved GO terms, pathways such as photosynthesis, DNA integration, cell wall modification, thylakoid, and photosystem were significant. 21 DGHP, which were involved in photosynthesis, and 17 random DGHP were selected for qRT-PCR validation. The up-regulated PsbQ and down-regulated subunits of PSI and PSII and photosynthetic electron transport in the photosynthesis pathway were observed in our study. Extensive transcriptome data were obtained by RNA-Seq, providing a comprehensive overview of panicle transcriptomes at the heading stage in a heterotic hybrid.

Human health water quality criteria (HHWQC) for benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in Chinese rivers and lakes were established using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Results showed that the national bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values for BaP at trophic levels 2, 3, and 4 were 342 L/kg, 199 L/kg, and 196 L/kg, respectively. The probabilistic HHWQC for BaP was 0.00407 µg/L for both water and organisms consumption and 0.00488 µg/L for organisms consumption only, which provide a more adequate protection than the deterministic HHWQC. Approximately 32.1% of the studied waters in China exceeded the derived HHWQC, which is likely to have adverse health effects and need be considered more attention. The derived HHWQC for BaP is soly based on Chinese exposure-related activity patterns and field-measured BAFs in surface freshwaters in China, which is important to provide a scientific basis for establishing or revising water quality standards (WQS) and risk management of BaP in water.
