RESUMO

The phenomenon of multiple external cervical root resorption (ECRR) lesions in a single patient is rare but may have a link with the chemotherapeutic agent bleomycin. This case details an adult male with multiple ECRR lesions that developed following chemotherapy. His treatment regimen for Hodgkin's lymphoma included the chemotherapeutic antibiotic bleomycin, which has previously been linked with development of multiple ECRR lesions. The patient developed graft versus host disease following an allogeneic stem cell transplant, which could have a significant role in the development and promotion of the ECRR lesions. In total, 8 teeth developed ECRR, and all the known causative factors were excluded when examined. To our knowledge, this is only the second reported case in the literature to link bleomycin to multiple ECRR lesions. This case report aims to bring the reader's attention to the fact that multiple cervical resorption lesions can develop simultaneously. These lesions can be difficult to diagnose and treat and are often misdiagnosed as caries. Finally, the reader should consider the possible role of bleomycin and graft versus host disease in development of multiple lesions of ECRR.

RESUMO

Librarians continually integrate new technologies into library services for health sciences students. Recently published data are lacking about student ownership of technological devices, awareness of new technologies, and interest in using devices and technologies to interact with the library. A survey was implemented at seven health sciences libraries to help answer these questions. Results show that librarian assumptions about awareness of technologies are not supported, and student interest in using new technologies to interact with the library varies widely. Collecting this evidence provides useful information for successfully integrating technologies into library services.

RESUMO

Providing a current awareness service to patrons has long been a concern of many health sciences librarians. Dental librarians have a unique challenge in providing current awareness to patrons as the literature has not always been available in a timely manner through traditional systems. This article will discuss the evolution of current awareness systems, the issues facing dental librarians with regard to providing dental current awareness, and how the Wilson Dental Library addressed those issues.

RESUMO

Mindfulness meditation is increasingly being used as a way of managing pain, reducing stress and anxiety and, in the form of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), as a way of reducing the risk of recurrence in depression (NICE, 2004). This article considers its potential for parents preparing for childbirth focusing on three areas: managing pain during pregnancy and labour; reducing risk of perinatal depression; and increasing 'availability' of attention for the infant. The encouraging evidence to date suggests the possibility that mindfulness has an important contribution to make, both for reducing vulnerability in high-risk groups and as a universal intervention.
