Canine atopic dermatitis (AD) arises from hypersensitive immune reactions. AD symptoms entail severe pruritus and skin inflammation, with frequent relapses. Consequently, AD patients require continuous management, imposing financial burdens and mental fatigue on pet owners. In this study, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic relevance of secretome from canine adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), especially after encapsulation in nano-villi chitosan microspheres (CS-MS) to expect improved efficacy. Conditioned media (CM) from MSCs significantly inhibited the proliferation of splenocytes, induced the generation of regulatory T cells, and decreased mast cell degranulation. We found that beneficial soluble factors known to reduce AD symptoms, including transforming growth factor-beta 1, were detectable after sequential concentration and lyophilization of CM. The CS-MS, developed by a phase inversion regeneration method, showed high loading and sustained release of the secretome. Local injection of secretome-loaded CS-MS (ST/SC-MS) effectively reduced clinical severity compared to groups treated with secretome. Histological analysis revealed that ST/SC-MS potently suppressed epidermal hyperplasia, immunocyte infiltration and mast cell activation in the lesion. Taken together, this study presents a novel therapeutic approach exhibiting more potent and prolonged immunoregulatory efficacy of MSC secretome for canine AD treatment.

This study presents a thorough investigation of the novel application of graphene oxide (GO) modified with melamine formaldehyde to fabricate granular three-dimensional GO (3D-GO), followed by the introduction of UiO-66 doping (3D-GO/U) for high uranium (U) adsorption. The U(VI) adsorption isotherms revealed that 3D-GO/U-10 with 10 % UiO-66 incorporation exhibited an impressive adsorption capacity of 375.5 mg g-1 and remained high U(VI) sorption performance in wide pH range. The introduction of UiO-66 to 3D-GO (3D-GO/U-10) led to the deagglomeration of the UiO-66 particles. The in situ surface-enhanced-Raman-spectroscopy-analysis and density-functional-theory simulations showed the symmetric metal center site Zr-O2 on UiO-66 was discovered to exhibit the highest adsorption energy (-3.21 eV) for U(VI) species due to the electrons transfer from the oxygen atom to U(VI) drives the covalent bonding between the symmetric metal center sites Zr-O2 and U(VI) on 3D-GO/U-10. The 3D-GO/U-10 was regenerated using a 0.1 M Na2CO3/0.01 M H2O2 solution and achieved up to 89.7 % U(VI) removal in the 5th cycle. The continuous flow column experiments results revealed 3D-GO/U-10 can regenerate and maintain a U(VI) removal capacity of ∼76 % for up to 4 cycles column experiments. Therefore, 3D-GO/U-10 exhibits great potential for removing U(VI) from water bodies.

In-situ remediation of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contaminated soils via Fenton oxidation is a promising approach. However, determining the proper injection amount of H2O2 and Fe source over the Fenton reaction in the complex geological conditions for in-situ TPH soil remediation remains a daunting challenge. Herein, we introduced a practical and novel approach using soft computational models, a multilayer perception artificial neural network (MPLNN), for predicting the TPH removal performance. In this study, we conducted 48 sets of TPH removal experiments using Fenton oxidation to determine the TPH removal performance of a wide range of different ground conditions and generated 336 data points. As a result, a negative Pearson correlation coefficient was obtained in the Fe injection mass and the natural presence of Fe mineral in the soil, indicating that the excess of Fe could significantly retarded the TPH removal performance in the Fenton reaction. In addition, the MPLNN model with 6-6-1 training using Scaled conjugate gradient backpropagation (SCG) with tangent sigmoid as the transfer function demonstrated a high accuracy for TPH removal prediction with the correlation determination of 0.974 and mean square error value of 0.0259. The optimized MPLNN model achieved less than 20% error for predicting TPH removal performance in actual TPH-contaminated soil via Fenton oxidation. Hence, the proposed MPLNN can be useful in improving the Fenton oxidation of TPH removal performance in-situ soil remediation.

In this paper, we explore the development of a multi-functional surface designed to tackle the challenges posed by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a common opportunistic pathogen. Infections caused by S. aureus during surgical procedures highlight the need for effective strategies to inhibit its adhesion, growth, and colonization, particularly on the surfaces of invasive medical devices. Until now, most existing research has focused on nanopillar structures (positive topographies). Uniform nanopillar arrays have been shown to control bacterial behavior based on the spacing between nanopillars. However, nanopillar structures are susceptible to external friction, impact, and force, making it challenging to maintain their antibacterial properties. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the antibacterial behavior of nanohole structures, which offer relatively superior mechanical robustness compared to nanopillars. Moreover, for applications in medical devices such as laparoscopes, there is a pressing need for surfaces that are not only transparent and flexible (or curved) but are also equipped with antibacterial properties. Our study introduces a scalable multi-functional surface that synergistically combines antibacterial and anti-fog properties. This is achieved by fabricating thin films with variously sized holes (ranging from 0.3 µm to 4 µm) using polyurethane acrylate (PUA). We assessed the activity of S. aureus on these surfaces and found that a 1 µm-diameter-hole pattern significantly reduced the presence of live S. aureus, without any detection of dead S. aureus. This bacteriostatic effect is attributed to the restricted proliferation due to the confined area provided by the hole pattern. However, the persistence of some live S. aureus on the surface necessitates further measures to minimize bacterial adhesion and enhance antibacterial effectiveness. To address this challenge, we coated the zwitterionic polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) onto the nanohole pattern surface to reduce S. aureus adhesion. Moreover, in long-term experiments on surfaces, the MPC-coated effectively inhibited the colonization of S. aureus (18 h; 82%, 7 days; 83%, and 14 days; 68% antibacterial rate). By integrating PUA, MPC, and nanohole architectures into a single, flexible platform, we achieved a multi-functional surface catering to transparency, anti-fogging, and anti-biofouling requirements. This innovative approach marks a significant advancement in surface engineering, offering a versatile solution applicable in various fields, particularly in preventing S. aureus contamination in invasive medical devices like laparoscopes. The resultant surface, characterized by its transparency, flexibility, and antibacterial functionality, stands out as a promising candidate for mitigating S. aureus-related risks in medical applications.

This 20-year study (2001-2020) conducted in Jangmok Bay, Korea, assessed the intricate relationships between environmental factors and Noctiluca scintillans blooms. Granger causality tests and PCA analysis were used to assess the impact of sea surface temperature (SST), salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, wind patterns, rainfall, and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration on bloom dynamics. The results revealed significant, albeit delayed, influences of these variables on bloom occurrence, with SST exhibiting a notable 2-month lag and salinity a 1-month lag in their impact. Additionally, the analysis highlighted the significant roles of phosphate, ammonium, and silicate, which influenced N. scintillans blooms with lags of 1 to 3 months. The PCA demonstrates how SST and wind speed during spring and summer, along with wind direction and salinity in winter, significantly impact N. scintillans blooms. We noted not only an increase in large-scale N. scintillans blooms but also a cyclical pattern of occurrence every 3 years. These findings underscore the synergistic effects of environmental factors, highlighting the complex interplay between SST, salinity, DO concentration, and weather conditions to influence bloom patterns. This research enhances our understanding of harmful algal blooms (HABs), emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach that considers multiple interconnected environmental variables for predicting and managing N. scintillans blooms.

Pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs), and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) have seen a recent sustained increase in usage, leading to increasing discharge and accumulation in wastewater. Conventional water treatment and disinfection processes are somewhat limited in effectively addressing this micropollutant issue. Ultrasonication (US), which serves as an advanced oxidation process, is based on the principle of ultrasound irradiation, exposing water to high-frequency waves, inducing thermal decomposition of H2O while using the produced radicals to oxidize and break down dissolved contaminants. This review evaluates research over the past five years on US-based technologies for the effective degradation of EDCs and PPCPs in water and assesses various factors that can influence the removal rate: solution pH, temperature of water, presence of background common ions, natural organic matter, species that serve as promoters and scavengers, and variations in US conditions (e.g., frequency, power density, and reaction type). This review also discusses various types of carbon/non-carbon catalysts, O3 and ultraviolet processes that can further enhance the degradation efficiency of EDCs and PPCPs in combination with US processes. Furthermore, numerous types of EDCs and PPCPs and recent research trends for these organic contaminants are considered.

Trisomy 21 (T21), a recurrent aneuploidy occurring in 1:800 births, predisposes to congenital heart disease (CHD) and multiple extracardiac phenotypes. Despite a definitive genetic etiology, the mechanisms by which T21 perturbs development and homeostasis remain poorly understood. We compared the transcriptome of CHD tissues from 49 patients with T21 and 226 with euploid CHD (eCHD). We resolved cell lineages that misexpressed T21 transcripts by cardiac single-nucleus RNA sequencing and RNA in situ hybridization. Compared with eCHD samples, T21 samples had increased chr21 gene expression; 11-fold-greater levels (P = 1.2 × 10-8) of SOST (chr17), encoding the Wnt inhibitor sclerostin; and 1.4-fold-higher levels (P = 8.7 × 10-8) of the SOST transcriptional activator ZNF467 (chr7). Euploid and T21 cardiac endothelial cells coexpressed SOST and ZNF467; however, T21 endothelial cells expressed 6.9-fold more SOST than euploid endothelial cells (P = 2.7 × 10-27). Wnt pathway genes were downregulated in T21 endothelial cells. Expression of DSCAM, residing within the chr21 CHD critical region, correlated with SOST (P = 1.9 × 10-5) and ZNF467 (P = 2.9 × 10-4). Deletion of DSCAM from T21 endothelial cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells diminished sclerostin secretion. As Wnt signaling is critical for atrioventricular canal formation, bone health, and pulmonary vascular homeostasis, we concluded that T21-mediated increased sclerostin levels would inappropriately inhibit Wnt activities and promote Down syndrome phenotypes. These findings imply therapeutic potential for anti-sclerostin antibodies in T21.

Membrane-based water treatment has emerged as a promising solution to address global water challenges. Graphene oxide (GO) has been successfully employed in membrane filtration processes owing to its reversible properties, large-scale production potential, layer-to-layer stacking, great oxygen-based functional groups, and unique physicochemical characteristics, including the creation of nano-channels. This review evaluates the separation performance of various GO-based membranes, manufactured by coating or interfacial polymerization with different support layers such as polymer, metal, and ceramic, for endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs). In most studies, the addition of GO significantly improved the removal efficiency, flux, porosity, hydrophilicity, stability, mechanical strength, and antifouling performance compared to pristine membranes. The key mechanisms involved in contaminant removal included size exclusion, electrostatic exclusion, and adsorption. These mechanisms could be ascribed to the physicochemical properties of compounds, such as molecular size and shape, hydrophilicity, and charge state. Therefore, understanding the removal mechanisms based on compound characteristics and appropriately adjusting the operational conditions are crucial keys to membrane separation. Future research directions should explore the characteristics of the combination of GO derivatives with various support layers, by tailoring diverse operating conditions and compounds for effective removal of EDCs and PhACs. This is expected to accelerate the development of surface modification strategies for enhanced contaminant removal.

PURPOSE: The impact of sarcopenia in oncology is increasingly recognized, yet little is known about its clinical implications in breast cancer. This systematic review and meta-analysis estimates the overall prevalence of sarcopenia in breast cancer, quantifies skeletal muscle index (SMI), and comprehensively evaluates sarcopenia's impact on clinical outcomes. METHODS: We systematically searched primary original research published before June 2023 in four databases: the Cochrane Library via Wiley, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Embase via Elsevier Excerpta Medica, and Medline via Ovid. Standardized mean SMI and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated by applying the random-effects model. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the National Institutes of Health quality assessment checklist. RESULTS: The systematic review included 17 studies with a total of 9863 patients; the meta-analysis included 12 of these studies. The mean prevalence of sarcopenia in breast cancer (stages I-III) was 32.5%. The mean SMI assessed by CT was 43.94 cm2/m2 (95% CI 42.87, 45.01; p < .01). Overall, low muscle mass was associated with chemotherapy toxicities, dose reductions, dose delays, or treatment discontinuation. Low muscle mass was generally associated with poor survival, but in some studies, this association was not significant or reversed direction. CONCLUSION: Sarcopenia is not just a state of muscle mass loss, but an influencing factor on therapeutic effects and survival rates in oncology. It is thus necessary to recognize the risk of sarcopenia throughout the trajectory of cancer treatment, identify low muscle mass early, and manage it from a prehabilitation perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Payment structured around Episodes of Care is a method for incentivizing decreased care utilization after major procedures. We examined Major Bowel Episodes of Care (MB-EoC)-the focus among general surgery procedures-within a large health system to determine the contribution of emergency bowel surgery to higher costs of care. METHODS: Adult MB-EoC cases from July 2018 to June 2021 were reviewed for 90-d costs, examining patient age, insurance, diagnosis, cost of care, and contributors to cost. For patients aged ≥45 y who had nonelective care for colon cancer, incidence of prior screening colonoscopy was examined. RESULTS: We identified 1292 colectomy cases. Mean age was 65 y. Of these patients, 90% had Medicare/commercial insurance. Colon cancer comprised 41% of primary diagnoses. Twenty-eight percent of cases were nonelective, more likely to have Medicaid/underinsured (21% versus 7%, P < 0.001), and had higher utilization of postdischarge cost-drivers. Ninety-day EoC per case cost was 66% higher for emergent versus elective cases. Of eligible emergency cancer cases, 43% (40/93) had undergone prior colonoscopy within 10 y. For patients with colon cancer, 90-d EoC per case was 39% higher for emergent versus elective cases. CONCLUSIONS: Emergency MB-EoC cases disproportionally contribute to higher 90-d care utilization and costs. Efforts to increase screening colonoscopy in appropriate populations may have a substantial impact on MB-EoC costs.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The care burden of people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (pALS) increases with disease progression. This study aimed to investigate the home care status and preparedness of care partners of pALS (cALS) in Korea. METHODS: An online survey was conducted with family care partners of patients diagnosed with ALS for over 1 year in 2022. The data collected included care time, depression evaluated using the patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), preparedness for caregiving scale (PCS), and caregiver competence scale (CCS). Results were compared based on whether the pALS underwent a tracheostomy or not. RESULTS: Ninety-eight cALS of 98 pALS participated in the study, of whom 59 pALS had undergone tracheostomy. Among the cALS, 60.2% were spouses, and 34.7% were children. The cALS took care of the patients for 13 (8-20) hours/day (median, interquartile range [IQR]) on weekdays and 15 (10-24) h/day on weekends. Among the cALS, 91.8% were depressed, and 28.6% had severe depression. The median (IQR) PCS and CCS scores were low (11/32 (8-15) and 8/20 (8-11), respectively), and both were lower in those caring for patients without than with tracheostomy (p < .001 and p < .02, respectively). Most cALS (77.6%) wished to continue caring for their pALS at home. DISCUSSION: Family care partners of pALS spend more than half of each day caring for patients and are often depressed. Most cALS preferred providing care at home, but felt ill-prepared. Designing home-based medical care is necessary for pALS to thrive at home.

Biodegradable plastics have gained popularity as environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastics, which face recycling and degradation challenges. Although the biodegradability of these plastics has been established, research on their ecotoxicity remains limited. Biodegradable plastics may still contain conventional additives, including toxic and non-degradable substances, to maintain their functionality during production and processing. Despite degrading the polymer matrix, these additives can persist in the environment and potentially harm ecosystems and humans. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential ecotoxicity of biodegradable plastics by analyzing the phthalate esters (PAEs) leaching out from biodegradable plastics through soil leachate. Sixteen commercial biodegradable plastic products were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to determine the types and amounts of PAE used in the products and evaluate their ecotoxicity. Among the various PAEs analyzed, non-regulated dioctyl isophthalate (DOIP) was the most frequently detected (ranging from 40 to 212 µg g-1). Although the DOIP is considered one of PAE alternatives, the detected amount of it revealed evident ecotoxicity, especially in the aquatic environment. Other additives, including antioxidants, lubricants, surfactants, slip agents, and adhesives, were also qualitatively detected in commercial products. This is the first study to quantify the amounts of PAEs leached from biodegradable plastics through water mimicking PAE leaching out from biodegradable plastics to soil leachate when landfilled and evaluate their potential ecotoxicity. Despite their potential toxicity, commercial biodegradable plastics are currently marketed and promoted as environmentally friendly materials, which could lead to indiscriminate public consumption. Therefore, in addition to improving biodegradable plastics, developing eco-friendly additives is significant. Future studies should investigate the leaching kinetics in soil leachate over time and toxicity of biodegradable plastics after landfill disposal.

The near-infrared (NIR) sensor technology is crucial for various applications such as autonomous driving and biometric tracking. Silicon photodetectors (SiPDs) are widely used in NIR applications; however, their scalability is limited by their crystalline properties. Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have attracted attention for NIR applications owing to their scalability, low-temperature processing, and notably low dark current density (JD), which is similar to that of SiPDs. However, the still high JD (at NIR band) and few measurements of noise equivalent powers (NEPs) pose challenges for accurate performance comparisons. This study addresses these issues by quantitatively characterizing the performance matrix and JD generation mechanism using electron-blocking layers (EBLs) in OPDs. The energy offset at an EBL/photosensitive layer interface determines the thermal activation energy and directly affects JD. A newly synthesized EBL (3PAFBr) substantially enhances the interfacial energy barrier by forming a homogeneous contact owing to the improved anchoring ability of 3PAFBr. As a result, the OPD with 3PAFBr yields a noise current of 852 aA (JD = 12.3 fA cm⁻2 at V → -0.1 V) and several femtowatt-scale NEPs. As far as it is known, this is an ultralow of JD in NIR OPDs. This emphasizes the necessity for quantitative performance characterization.

2D van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWH) have emerged as an attractive platform for the realization of optoelectronic synaptic devices, which are critical for energy-efficient computing systems. Photogating induced by charge traps at the interfaces indeed results in ultrahigh responsivity and tunable photoconductance. Yet, optical potentiation and depression remain mostly modulated by gate bias, requiring relatively high energy inputs. Thus, advanced all-optical synapse switching strategies are still needed. In this work, a reversible switching between positive photoconductivity (PPC) and negative photoconductivity (NPC) is achieved in graphene/WSe2 vdWH solely through light-intensity modulation. Consequently, the graphene/WSe2 synaptic device shows tunable optical potentiation and depression behavior with an ultralow power consumption of 127 aJ. The study further unravels the complex interplay of gate bias and incident light power in determining the sign and magnitude of the photocurrent, showing the critical role of charge trapping and photogating at interfaces. Interestingly, it is found that switching between PPC to NPC can be also obtained at 0 mV drain-source voltage. Overall, the reversible potentiation/depression effect based on light intensity modulation and its combination with additional gate bias tunability is very appealing for the development of energy-efficient optical communications and neuromorphic computing.

A 15-year-old intact male dachshund dog weighing 4.3 kg and a 5-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog weighing 13.6 kg were referred for examination because of paraparesis and facial paralysis, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracolumbar region and brain was performed. The dogs were premedicated with IV butorphanol, 0.2 mg/kg body weight (BW) and midazolam, 0.2 mg/kg BW. Anesthesia was induced with IV propofol, 4 to 5 mg/kg BW and maintained with sevoflurane in oxygen. The dachshund was orotracheally intubated with a 5.0-millimeter internal diameter endotracheal (ET) tube. During positioning in the MRI room, intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) was applied. The mixed-breed dog was orotracheally intubated with a 6.0-millimeter internal diameter ET tube. After inflation of the ET tube cuff, a leaking test was done by applying positive pressure ventilation. In both dogs, a distinct "popping" sound was heard when positive pressure was applied, after which air leakage from the cuff was evident. Failure to inflate the pilot balloon led to suspicion of a ruptured cuff. Reintubation was completed, both dogs remained stable during anesthesia, and no postanesthetic complications were observed. Rupture of both cuffs, which was visually confirmed, was thought to be caused by overinflation of the cuff, repeated sterilization of the ET tubes, and positive pressure ventilation. Repeated sterilization of ET tubes with ethylene oxide can alter the physical integrity of cuffs. Care should be taken not to overinflate ET tube cuffs, especially when they have been repeatedly sterilized, as cuff rupture may result in failure to provide adequate IPPV. Key clinical message: This report describes 2 cases in which ET tube cuff rupture was noted during anesthesia for MRI.


Rupture du ballonnet du tube endotrachéal pendant l'anesthésie chez 2 chiens. Un chien teckel mâle intact de 15 ans pesant 4,3 kg et un chien croisé mâle intact de 5 ans pesant 13,6 kg ont été référés pour examen en raison de paraparésie et de paralysie faciale, respectivement. Une imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM) de la région thoraco-lombaire et du cerveau a été réalisée. Les chiens ont reçu une prémédication avec du butorphanol IV, 0,2 mg/kg de poids corporel (PC), et du midazolam, 0,2 mg/kg PC. L'anesthésie a été induite avec du propofol IV, 4 à 5 mg/kg de PC et maintenue avec du sévoflurane dans de l'oxygène. Le teckel a été intubé par voie orotrachéale avec un tube endotrachéal (TE) de diamètre interne de 5,0 millimètres. Lors du positionnement dans la salle d'IRM, une ventilation intermittente à pression positive (VIPP) a été appliquée. Le chien de race mixte a été intubé par voie orotrachéale avec un TE de 6,0 millimètres de diamètre interne. Après le gonflage du ballonnet du TE, un test d'étanchéité a été effectué en appliquant une ventilation à pression positive. Chez les deux chiens, un son distinct de « claquement ¼ a été entendu lorsqu'une pression positive a été appliquée, après quoi une fuite d'air du ballonnet est devenue évidente. Le fait de ne pas gonfler le ballon pilote a fait soupçonner une rupture du ballonnet. Une ré-intubation a été effectuée, les deux chiens sont restés stables pendant l'anesthésie et aucune complication post-anesthésique n'a été observée. La rupture des deux ballonnets, confirmée visuellement, aurait été causée par un surgonflage du ballonnet, une stérilisation répétée des TE et une ventilation à pression positive. La stérilisation répétée des TE avec de l'oxyde d'éthylène peut altérer l'intégrité physique des ballonnets. Il convient de veiller à ne pas surgonfler les ballonnets des TE, en particulier lorsqu'ils ont été stérilisés à plusieurs reprises, car la rupture du ballonnet peut entraîner l'incapacité de fournir une VIPP adéquate.Message clinique clé:Ce rapport décrit 2 cas dans lesquels une rupture du ballonnet du TE a été constatée lors d'une anesthésie pour IRM.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

BACKGROUND: Daily usage of facial masks during coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic influenced on facial dermatoses. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the impact of mask-wearing habits on facial dermatoses. METHODS: A nationwide, observational, questionnaire-based survey was conducted from July through August 2021, involving 20 hospitals in Korea. RESULTS: Among 1,958 facial dermatoses, 75.9% of patients experienced aggravation or development of new-onset facial dermatoses after wearing masks. In aggravated or newly developed acne patients (543 out of 743), associated factors were healthcare provider, female gender, and a long duration of mask-wearing. Irritating symptoms, xerosis, and hyperpigmentation were more frequently observed in this group. Aggravated or newly developed rosacea patients (515 out of 660) were likely to be female, young, and have a long duration of mask-wearing per day. Seborrheic dermatitis patients who experienced aggravation or de novo development (132 out of 184) were younger, and they more frequently involved the chin and jaw in addition to the nasolabial folds and both cheeks. Contact dermatitis patients (132 out of 147) with aggravation or de novo development tended to be female, involve both cheeks, and complain of pruritus. Aggravated or newly developed atopic dermatitis patients (165 out of 224) were more likely to be female, and had a higher baseline investigator global assessment score before mask-wearing. CONCLUSION: Clinical features and factors related to aggravation were different according to the types of facial dermatoses.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widely recognized endocrine disrupting compound, has been discovered in drinking water sources/finished water and domestic wastewater influent/effluent. Numerous studies have shown photocatalytic and electrocatalytic oxidation to be very effective for the removal of BPA, particularly in the addition of graphene/graphene oxide (GO)-based nanocatalysts. Nevertheless, the photocatalytic and electrocatalytic degradation of BPA in aqueous solutions has not been reviewed. Therefore, this review gives a comprehensive understanding of BPA degradation during photo-/electro-catalytic activity in the presence of graphene/GO-based nanocatalysts. Herein, this review evaluated the main photo-/electro-catalytic degradation mechanisms and pathways for BPA removal under various water quality/chemistry conditions (pH, background ions, natural organic matter, promotors, and scavengers), the physicochemical characteristics of various graphene/GO-based nanocatalysts, and various operating conditions (voltage and current). Additionally, the reusability/stability of graphene/GO-based nanocatalysts, hybrid systems combined with ozone/ultrasonic/Fenton oxidation, and prospective research areas are briefly described.

We theoretically describe and experimentally demonstrate a graphene-integrated metasurface structure that enables electrically-tunable directional control of thermal emission. This device consists of a dielectric spacer that acts as a Fabry-Perot resonator supporting long-range delocalized modes bounded on one side by an electrostatically tunable metal-graphene metasurface. By varying the Fermi level of the graphene, the accumulated phase of the Fabry-Perot mode is shifted, which changes the direction of absorption and emission at a fixed frequency. We directly measure the frequency- and angle-dependent emissivity of the thermal emission from a fabricated device heated to 250 °C. Our results show that electrostatic control allows the thermal emission at 6.61 µm to be continuously steered over 16°, with a peak emissivity maintained above 0.9. We analyze the dynamic behavior of the thermal emission steerer theoretically using a Fano interference model, and use the model to design optimized thermal steerer structures.

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendon is composed of dense connective tissue and is one of the largest tendons in the body. In veterinary medicine, acute ruptures are associated with impact injury or sharp trauma. Healing of the ruptured tendon is challenging because of poor blood and nerve supply as well as the residual cell population. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains numerous bioactive agents and growth factors and has been utilized to promote healing in bone, soft tissue, and tendons. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the healing effect of PRP injected into the surrounding fascia of the Achilles tendon after allograft in rabbits. METHODS: Donor rabbits (n = 8) were anesthetized and 16 lateral gastrocnemius tendons were fully transected bilaterally. Transected tendons were decellularized and stored at -80°C prior to allograft. The allograft was placed on the partially transected medial gastrocnemius tendon in the left hindlimb of 16 rabbits. The allograft PRP group (n = 8) had 0.3 mL of PRP administered in the tendon and the allograft control group (n = 8) did not receive any treatment. After 8 weeks, rabbits were euthanatized and allograft tendons were transected for macroscopic, biomechanical, and histological assessment. RESULTS: The allograft PRP group exhibited superior macroscopic assessment scores, greater tensile strength, and a histologically enhanced healing process compared to those in the allograft control group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest administration of PRP on an allograft tendon has a positive effect on the healing process in a ruptured Achilles tendon.

The existence of pollutants, such as toxic organic dye chemicals, in water and wastewater raises concerns as they are inadequately eliminated through conventional water and wastewater treatment methods, including physicochemical and biological processes. Ultrasonic treatment has emerged as an advanced treatment process that has been widely applied to the decomposition of recalcitrant organic contaminants. Ultrasonic treatment has several advantages, including easy operation, sustainability, non-secondary pollutant production, and saving energy. This review examines the elimination of dye chemicals and categorizes them into cationic and anionic dyes based on the existing literature. The objectives include (i) analyzing the primary factors (water quality and ultrasonic conditions) that influence the sonodegradation of dye chemicals and their byproducts during ultrasonication, (ii) assessing the impact of the different sonocatalysts and combined systems (with ozone and ultraviolet) on sonodegradation, and (iii) exploring the characteristics-based removal mechanisms of dyes. In addition, this review proposes areas for future research on ultrasonic treatment of dye chemicals in water and wastewater.
