RESUMO

Oxygen-mediated triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) quenching limits the application of such organic upconversion materials. Here, we report that the photooxidation of organic amines is an effective and versatile strategy to suppress oxygen-mediated upconversion quenching in both organic solvents and aqueous solutions. The strategy is based on the dual role of organic amines in photooxidation, i.e., as singlet oxygen scavengers and electron donors. Under photoexcitation, the photosensitizer sensitizes oxygen to produce singlet oxygen for the oxidation of alkylamine, reducing the oxygen concentration. However, photoinduced electron transfer among photosensitizers, organic amines, and oxygen leads to the production of superoxide anions that suppress TTA-UC. To observe oxygen-tolerating TTA-UC, we find that alkyl secondary amines can balance the production of singlet oxygen and superoxide anions. We then utilize polyethyleneimine (PEI) to synthesize amphiphilic polymers to encapsulate TTA-UC pairs for the formation of water-dispersible, ultrasmall, and multicolor-emitting TTA-UC nanoparticles.

RESUMO

The long-term incidence trends of 32 cancers in China remained unclear. Cancer statistics for young population were often presented in aggregate, masking important heterogeneity. We aimed to assess the incidence trends of 32 cancers in China from 1983 to 2032, stratified by sex and age groups. Data on cancer incidence from 1983 to 2017 were extracted from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Volumes VI-XII. The age-period-cohort model was utilized to assess age and birth cohort effects on the temporal trends of 32 cancers in China, while the Bayesian age-period-cohort model was utilized to project future trends from 2018 to 2032. An increase in cohort effects is observed in some cancers such as thyroid and kidney cancers. Eight of the 12 obesity-related cancers may rise in the 0-14 age group, and nine in the 15-39 age group from 2013 to 2032. Liver and stomach cancers show an increasing trend among the younger population, contrasting with the observed declining trend in the middle-aged population. There has been a significant rise in the proportions of cervical cancer among females aged 40-64 (4.3%-19.1%), and prostate cancer among males aged 65+ (1.1%-11.8%) from 1983 to 2032. Cancer spectrum in China is shifting toward that in developed countries. Incidence rates of most cancers across different age groups may increase in recent cohorts. It is essential to insist effective preventive interventions, and promote healthier lifestyles, such as reducing obesity, especially among younger population.

RESUMO

Aim: The information assessing sex differences in outcomes of patients with three-vessel coronary disease (TVD) after different treatment strategies is sparse. This study aimed to investigate long-term outcomes of TVD among women compared with men after medical therapy (MT) alone, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), or coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG). Methods: Consecutive 8943 patients with TVD were enrolled. Associations between sex and all-cause death and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) (all-cause death, myocardial infarction, or stroke) were assessed. Results: Of the 8943 patients, 1821 (20.4%) were women. During a median follow-up of 6.6 years, women had comparable incidences of all-cause death (16.6% vs. 14.9%, P = 0.079) and MACCE (27.2% vs. 26.1%, P = 0.320) to men. After multivariable analysis, women showed lower adjusted risks of all-cause death (HR: 0.777; P = 0.001) and MACCE (HR: 0.870; P = 0.016) than men in the entire cohort. Subgroup analysis revealed that the less all-cause death risk of women relative to men was significant in PCI (HR: 0.702; P = 0.009), and CABG groups (HR: 0.708; P = 0.047), but not in MT alone group. Lower MACCE risk for women vs. men was significant only in PCI group (HR: 0.821; P = 0.037). However, no significant interaction between sex and three strategies was observed for all-cause death (P for interaction = 0.312) or MACCE (P for interaction = 0.228). Conclusions: The cardiovascular prognosis of TVD female patients is better than that of men, which has no interaction with the treatment strategies received (MT alone, PCI, or CABG).

RESUMO

Introduction: Research examining the bidirectional relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) and depressive symptoms, while accounting for cumulative effect of repeated episodes of CRP or depressive symptoms, is currently deficient in non-Western populations. Methods: A nationally representative population-based cohort data from the Chinese Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) was utilized. In bi-directional analysis, we considered both single determinations and two successive determinations of CRP or depressive symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression assessed the association between elevated CRP levels at baseline or repeated episodes of CRP elevations over two successive determinations and subsequent elevated depressive symptoms, and vice versa. Results: Although single determinations of CRP or depressive symptoms yielded non-significant results in both directions, full multivariate models, adjusting for baseline depressive symptoms, socio-demographic characteristics, health-related behaviors, metabolic measures, and health status, revealed a significantly positive association based on two successive determinations of CRP or depressive symptoms. This significant association was observed between cumulative effects of sustained CRP elevations over two successive determinations (2 vs. 0) and subsequent elevated depressive symptoms (OR=1.58; 95% CI: 1.15 to 2.17) and between cumulative effect of repeated episodes of depression (2 vs. 0) and later elevated CRP (OR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.56). Furthermore, sex-stratified analyses confirmed the robustness of these relationships. Conclusion: There are bidirectional associations between depressive symptoms and CRP, driven by the cumulative effect of repeated episodes of CRP or depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese adults. These findings hold significant clinical implications, highlighting the potential of both anti-inflammatory and anti-depression approaches.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the predictive accuracy of new-generation online intraocular lens (IOL) power formulas in eyes with previous myopic laser refractive surgery (LRS) and to evaluate the influence of corneal asphericity on the predictive accuracy. METHODS: The authors retrospectively evaluated 52 patients (78 eyes) with a history of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) who subsequently underwent cataract surgery. Refractive prediction errors were calculated for 12 no-history new online formulas: 8 formulas with post-LRS versions (Barrett True-K, EVO 2.0, Hoffer QST, and Pearl DGS) using keratometry and posterior/total keratometry measured by IOLMaster 700 and 4 formulas without post-LRS versions (Cooke K6 and Kane) using keratometry and total keratometry. The refractive prediction error, mean absolute error (MAE), and percentages of eyes with prediction errors of ±0.25, ±0.50, ±0.75, ±1.00, and ±1.50 diopters (D) were compared. RESULTS: The MAEs of the 12 formulas were significantly different (F = 83.66, P < .001). The MAEs ranged from 0.62 to 0.94 D and from 1.07 to 1.84 D in the formulas with and without post-LRS versions, respectively. The EVO formula produced the lowest MAE (0.60) and MedAE (0.47), followed by the Barrett True-K (0.69 and 0.50, respectively). Each percentage of eyes with refractive prediction error was also significantly different among the 12 formulas (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The EVO and Barrett True-K formulas demonstrate comparable performance to the other existing formulas in eyes with a history of myopic LASIK/PRK. Surgeons should use these formulas with post-LRS versions and input keratometric values whenever possible. [J Refract Surg. 2024;40(6):e354-e361.].

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of developing diabetes and ketoacidosis in clinical patients with Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). METHODS: We looked in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) for reports of ICIs-associated DM and ketoacidosis between January 2004 and March 2022. We explored the signals using fourfold table-based proportional imbalance algorithms. Patient characteristics, country distribution, and outcomes of adverse reactions were described. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the time of onset and prognosis of adverse reactions. RESULTS: A total of 2,110 reports of ICIs-related DM were included in the study. The largest number of reports was from Japan (752, 35.64%), followed by the United States and France (624, 29.57%; 183, 8.67%). Seven drugs detected signals of DM and ketoacidosis according to four proportional imbalance algorithms: Nivolumab, Pembrolizumab, Cemiplimab, Dostarlimab, Atezolizumab, Avelumab, and Durvalumab. Diabetes and ketoacidosis generally occured early in the course of ICIs treatment, the median time to event onset was 144.5 (interquartile range 27-199) days. ICIs-related diabetes and ketoacidosis events resulted in 934 major medical events (44.3%), 524 hospitalizations (24.8%), 60 life-threatening events (2.8%), 42 deaths (2.0%), and 39 disability events (1.8%). CONCLUSION: The study reveals the risk and characteristics of diabetes and ketoacidosis associated with ICIs, which may provide evidence for post-marketing evaluation. Careful consideration should be given to the possibility of an increased risk of diabetes and ketoacidosis after using ICIs, and careful monitoring for diabetes and ketoacidosis is recommended.

RESUMO

SH2B1 mutations are associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in humans. Global deletion of Sh2b1 results in severe obesity, type 2 diabetes, and MASLD in mice. Neuron-specific restoration of SH2B1 rescues the obesity phenotype of Sh2b1-null mice, indicating that the brain is a main SH2B1 target. However, SH2B1 neurocircuits remain elusive. SH2B1-expressing neurons in the paraventricular hypothalamus (PVHSH2B1) and a PVHSH2B1→dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) neurocircuit are identified here. PVHSH2B1 axons monosynaptically innervate DRN neurons. Optogenetic stimulation of PVHSH2B1 axonal fibers in the DRN suppresses food intake. Chronic inhibition of PVHSH2B1 neurons causes obesity. In male and female mice, either embryonic-onset or adult-onset deletion of Sh2b1 in PVH neurons causes energy imbalance, obesity, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and MASLD. Ablation of Sh2b1 in the DRN-projecting PVHSH2B1 subpopulation also causes energy imbalance, obesity, and metabolic disorders. Conversely, SH2B1 overexpression in either total or DRN-projecting PVHSH2B1 neurons protects against diet-induced obesity. SH2B1 binds to TrkB and enhances brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling. Ablation of Sh2b1 in PVHSH2B1 neurons induces BDNF resistance in the PVH, contributing to obesity. In conclusion, these results unveil a previously unrecognized PVHSH2B1→DRN neurocircuit through which SH2B1 defends against obesity by enhancing BDNF/TrkB signaling.

RESUMO

Background: Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a clinical examination of gastrointestinal diseases with pain, nausea, and other discomfort of the patient. Therefore, it is of practical significance to give corresponding nursing intervention for patients undergoing painless gastrointestinal endoscopy. Objective: To probe the application efficacy of cluster nursing in patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy. Design: This was a retrospective study. Setting: This study was carried out in the Department of Endoscopy Room, Funan County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Participants: From March 2020 to October 2022, 126 patients who underwent painless gastrointestinal endoscopy were chosen and randomly separated into a control group and research group. Interventions: The control group received routine safety nursing management. The research group adopted safety management guided by a cluster nursing strategy. Primary Outcome Measures: (1) the dosage of anesthetic drug use and examination time (2) hemodynamics (3) occurrence of common adverse events (4) score of bowel preparation (5) scores of anxiety and depression (6) comfort degree and (7) nursing satisfaction. Results: Compared to the control group, the dosage of anesthetic drug use and examination time in the research group were lessened (P < .001, 95% CI: -10.06--7.94 and P < .001, 95% CI: -7.10--4.88), the diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate indexes in the research group were reduced (P = .03, 95% CI:-10.07--5.32; P < .001, 95% CI:-13.87--7.91 and P < .001, 95% CI:-12.23--6.27), the occurrence of adverse events during the examination in the research group was reduced (χ2=8.068, P = .005), the score of bowel preparation in the research group was elevated (P < .001, 95% CI: 1.06-1.56), the scores of anxiety as well as depression in the research group were reduced (P < .001, 95% CI: 10.77-13.35 and P < .001, 95% CI: 7.31-9.53), the comfort score of patients in the research group presented higher (P < .001, 95% CI: 17.77-22.91), and the nursing satisfaction in the research group was elevated (χ2=10.31, P = .001). Conclusion: Cluster nursing for patients with painless gastrointestinal endoscopy combined examination has a positive impact on ensuring the successful completion of the examination, effectively controlling the risk of adverse events, and improving patient satisfaction.

RESUMO

Although our knowledge of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been deepened, the accurate diagnosis of ASD from normal individuals is still left behind. In this study, we proposed to apply the spatial pattern of the network topology (SPN) to identify children with ASD from normal ones. Based on two independent batches of electroencephalogram datasets collected separately, the accurate recognition of ASD from normal children was achieved by applying the proposed SPN features. Since decreased long-range connectivity was identified for children with ASD, the SPN features extracted from the distinctive topological architecture between two groups in the first dataset were used to validate the capacity of SPN in classifying ASD, and the SPN features achieved the highest accuracy of 92.31%, which outperformed the other features e.g., power spectrum density (84.62%), network properties (76.92%), and sample entropy (73.08%). Moreover, within the second dataset, by using the model trained in the first dataset, the SPN also acquired the highest sensitivity in recognizing ASD, when compared to the other features. These results consistently illustrated that the functional brain network, especially the intrinsic spatial network topology, might be the potential biomarker for the diagnosis of ASD.

RESUMO

Background: Amivantamab (JNJ-372) and mobocertinib (TAK-788) have been reported to have favorable therapeutic effect for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) exon 20 insertion (ex20ins) mutations. Thus, accurate detection of EGFR ex20ins mutations is crucial for subsequent individualized therapy. The aim of this study was to compare the two common methods of next generation sequencing (NGS) and amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-PCR) for detecting EGFR ex20ins mutations in Chinese NSCLC patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed EGFR mutations, especially for ex20ins, in 3,606 NSCLC patients detected by NGS and 1,785 patients by ARMS. Results: Among the 3,606 NGS patients, a total of 2,077 EGFR mutations and 95 EGFR ex20ins were identified, accounting for 57.6% and 2.6%, respectively. While 48.4% of EGFR mutations and 1.1% of ex20ins were detected in 1,785 ARMS patients, which were significantly lower than those of NGS (P<0.01). Thirty-four unique ex20ins variants were identified by NGS, and eight of them was reported for the first time. However, ARMS was designed to detect only several known EGFR ex20ins variants, and even did not include the most common variants in Chinese NSCLC patients. Conclusions: NGS is more advantageous and strongly recommended for the detection of EGFR ex20ins mutations. Considering the fast and cost-effective ARMS detection method, it is suggested that the primers design should be updated according to the characteristics of EGFR ex20ins mutations in Chinese NSCLC patients.

RESUMO

Cognitive disturbance in identifying, processing, and responding to salient or novel stimuli are typical attributes of schizophrenia (SCH), and P300 has been proven to serve as a reliable psychosis endophenotype. The instability of neural processing across trials, i.e., trial-to-trial variability (TTV), is getting increasing attention in uncovering how the SCH "noisy" brain organizes during cognition processes. Nevertheless, the TTV in the brain network remains unrevealed, notably how it varies in different task stages. In this study, resorting to the time-varying directed electroencephalogram (EEG) network, we investigated the time-resolved TTV of the functional organizations subserving the evoking of P300. Results revealed anomalous TTV in time-varying networks across the delta, theta, alpha, beta1, and beta2 bands of SCH. The TTV of cross-band time-varying network properties can efficiently recognize SCH (accuracy: 83.39%, sensitivity: 89.22%, and specificity: 74.55%) and evaluate the psychiatric symptoms (i.e., Hamilton's depression scale-24, r = 0.430, p = 0.022, RMSE = 4.891; Hamilton's anxiety scale-14, r = 0.377, p = 0.048, RMSE = 4.575). Our study brings new insights into probing the time-resolved functional organization of the brain, and TTV in time-varying networks may provide a powerful tool for mining the substrates accounting for SCH and diagnostic evaluation of SCH.

RESUMO

AIM: Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and adverse prognostic events in patients with diabetes and triple-vessel coronary disease (TVD). METHODS: This study ultimately included 2051 patients with TVD and diabetes. Patients were categorized into five groups based on their HbA1c levels: < 6.0 %, 6.0-6.4 %, 6.5-6.9 %, 7.0-7.9 %, and ≥ 8.0 %. The primary endpoint was all-cause death, and the secondary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE). RESULTS: The median follow-up time was 5.88 years. During this period, a total of 323 (15.7 %) all-cause deaths and 537 (26.2 %) MACCEs were recorded. The relationship between HbA1c and the risk of endpoint events showed a J-shaped pattern, with the lowest risk observed between 6.0 % and 6.4 %. Further analysis revealed a significant interaction between HbA1c and age. In the subgroup with age < 70 years, as HbA1c increased, the risk of endpoint events gradually rose. While in the subgroup with age ≥70 years, there was an L-shaped relationship between HbA1c and endpoint events, with the highest risk observed in patients with HbA1c < 6.0 %. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed variations in the relationship between HbA1c levels and endpoint events among patients with TVD and diabetes of different ages. In younger patients, elevated HbA1c levels were associated with a higher risk of death and MACCE, while in older patients, excessively low HbA1c levels (HbA1c < 6 %) were linked to a higher risk of death and MACCE.

RESUMO

To improve the understanding of potential pathological mechanisms of macular edema (ME), we try to discover biomarker candidates related to ME caused by diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images by means of deep learning (DL). 32 eyes of 26 subjects with non-proliferative DR (NPDR), 77 eyes of 61 subjects with proliferative DR (PDR), 120 eyes of 116 subjects with branch RVO (BRVO), and 17 eyes of 15 subjects with central RVO (CRVO) were collected. A DL model was implemented to guide biomarker candidate discovery. The disorganization of the retinal outer layers (DROL), i.e., the gray value of the retinal tissues between the external limiting membrane (ELM) and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), the disrupted and obscured rate of the ELM, ellipsoid zone (EZ), and RPE, was measured. In addition, the occurrence, number, volume, and projected area of hyperreflective foci (HRF) were recorded. ELM, EZ, and RPE are more likely to be obscured in RVO group and HRFs are observed more frequently in DR group (all P ≤ 0.001). In conclusion, the features of DROL and HRF can be possible biomarkers related to ME caused by DR and RVO in OCT modality.

RESUMO

Limited studies have triangulated the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) or hypertension risk utilizing both observational and Mendelian randomization (MR) approaches. We employed data from the Norwegian Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) to conduct cross-sectional (n = 5854) and prospective (n = 3592) analyses, as well as one-sample MR (n = 86,324). We also used largest publicly available data for two-sample MR. Our cross-sectional analyses showed a 25 nmol/L increase in 25(OH)D was associated with a 1.73 mmHg decrease in SBP (95% CI - 2.46 to - 1.01), a 0.91 mmHg decrease in DBP (95% CI - 1.35 to - 0.47) and 19% lower prevalence of hypertension (OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.74 to 0.90) after adjusting for important confounders. However, these associations disappeared in prospective analyses. One-sample and two-sample MR results further suggested no causal relationship between serum vitamin D levels and blood pressure or hypertension risk in the general population.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate a total net-rate of 27.88 Tb/s for C-band wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over an ultralong span-length of 150 km. It is the largest net capacity × span-length product of 4182 Tb/s·km for C-band, single-core, standard single-mode optical fiber transmission over a length of more than 3,000 km. A total of 99 channels, spaced at 50 GHz intervals, are employed for transmitting 32 GBaud probabilistically constellation-shaped (PCS) 64QAM signals with an information entropy of 5.5. High gain amplifiers can achieve wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission with a bandwidth of 6.25 THz, at a noise figure below 4.3 dB, without the assistance of distributed Raman amplification.

RESUMO

Mode coupling and device nonlinear impairment appear to be a long-standing challenge in the orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode division multiplexing (MDM) of intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission systems. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end (E2E) learning strategy based on a frequency domain feature decoupling network (FDFDnet) emulator with joint probabilistic shaping (PS) and equalization for an OAM-MDM IM/DD transmission with three modes. Our FDFDnet emulator can accurately build a complex nonlinear model of an OAM-MDM system by separating the signal into features from different frequency domains. Furthermore, a FDFDnet-based E2E strategy for joint PS and equalization is presented with the aim of compensating the signal impairment for the OAM-MDM IM/DD system. An experiment is carried out on a 300 Gbit/s carrierless amplitude phase-32 (CAP-32) signal with three OAM modes over a 10 km ring-core fiber transmission, and the results show that the proposed FDFDnet emulator outperforms the traditional CGAN emulator, with improvements in the modelling accuracy of 30.8%, 26.3% and 31% for the three OAM modes. Moreover, the receiver sensitivity of the proposed E2E learning strategy is higher than for the CGAN emulator by 3, 2.5, 2.2 dBm and the real channel by 5.5, 5.1, and 5.3 dBm for the three OAM modes, respectively. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed FDFDnet emulator-based E2E learning strategy is a promising contender for achieving ultra-high-capacity interconnectivity between data centers.

RESUMO

In this paper, we propose a novel and simple multi-channel broadband optical chaos generation scheme based on phase modulation and chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). Firstly, phase modulation is introduced to generate more new frequency components to broaden the spectrum of the phase chaos. Meanwhile, the accumulated dispersion from CFBG distorts the intensity chaos, converts phase chaos to intensity chaos, and weakens the laser relaxation oscillation. This process would lead to energy redistribution in the power spectrum, effectively increasing the chaotic bandwidth. Then, the wavelength detuning between CFBG and the semiconductor laser is introduced to enhance the chaotic bandwidth further. The experiment results show that the 10 dB bandwidths of the five channels are up to 31.0 GHz, 34.3 GHz, 36.3 GHz, 40 GHz, and 40 GHz, respectively. Note that the maximum bandwidth of the PD in our experiment is limited to 40 GHz. In addition, the multi-channel chaotic signals obtained from the experiment system are used to generate multi-channel physical random numbers. After the post-processing operations, the total rate of five parallel high-speed physical random number generation channels is 4.64 Tbit/s (160 GSa/s × 5bit × 1 channel + 160 GSa/s × 6bit × 4 channels). As far as we know, this is the highest record of using external cavity feedback semiconductor lasers to generate random numbers, which has great potential to meet the security requirements of next-generation Tbit/s optical communication systems.

RESUMO

Fungi are key decomposers of deadwood, but the impact of anthropogenic changes in nutrients and temperature on fungal community and its consequences for wood microbial respiration are not well understood. Here, we examined how nitrogen and phosphorus additions (field experiment) and warming (laboratory experiment) together influence fungal composition and microbial respiration from decomposing wood of angiosperms and gymnosperms in a subtropical forest. Nutrient additions significantly increased wood microbial respiration via fungal composition, but effects varied with nutrient types and taxonomic groups. Specifically, phosphorus addition significantly increased wood microbial respiration (65%) through decreased acid phosphatase activity and increased abundance of fast-decaying fungi (e.g., white rot), while nitrogen addition marginally increased it (30%). Phosphorus addition caused a greater increase in microbial respiration in gymnosperms than in angiosperms (83.3% vs. 46.9%), which was associated with an increase in Basidiomycota:Ascomycota operational taxonomic unit abundance in gymnosperms but a decrease in angiosperms. The temperature dependencies of microbial respiration were remarkably constant across nutrient levels, consistent with metabolic scaling theory hypotheses. This is because there was no significant interaction between temperature and wood phosphorus availability or fungal composition, or the interaction among the three factors. Our results highlight the key role of tree identity in regulating nutrient response of wood microbial respiration through controlling fungal composition. Given that the range of angiosperm species may expand under climate warming and forest management, our data suggest that expansion will decrease nutrient effects on forest carbon cycling in forests previously dominated by gymnosperm species.

RESUMO

Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton is an outstanding herb with the homology of medicine and food. Its ripe fruits are traditionally used as an important tonic for kidneys and liver in China. Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton is rich in nutritional components and a variety of bioactive ingredients. A total of 206 compounds have been isolated and identified, they mainly include flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, iridoid glycosides, and triterpenoids. These compounds exert anti-osteoporosis, anti-tumor, liver protective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton has been traditionally used to treat many complex diseases, including osteoporotic bone pain, rheumatic bone, cancer, related aging symptoms, and so on. In the 2020 Edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, there are more than 100 prescriptions containing L. lucidum W.T. Aiton. Among them, some classical preparations including Er Zhi Wan and Zhenqi fuzheng formula, are used in the treatment of various cancers with good therapeutic effects. Additionally, L. lucidum W.T. Aiton has also many excellent applications for functional food, ornamental plants, bioindicator of air pollution, algicidal agents, and feed additives. Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton has rich plant resources. However, the application potential of it has not been fully exploited. We hope that this paper provides a theoretical basis for the high-value and high-connotation development of L. lucidum W.T. Aiton in the future.

RESUMO

Cow milk consumption (CMC) and downstream alterations of serum metabolites are commonly considered important factors regulating human health status. Foods may lead to metabolic changes directly or indirectly through remodelling gut microbiota (GM). We sought to identify the metabolic alterations in Chinese Peri-/Postmenopausal women with habitual CMC and explore if the GM mediates the CMC-metabolite associations. 346 Chinese Peri-/Postmenopausal women participants were recruited in this study. Fixed effects regression and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were applied to reveal alterations of serum metabolic features in different CMC groups. Spearman correlation coefficient was computed to detect metabolome-metagenome association. 36 CMC-associated metabolites including palmitic acid (FA(16:0)), 7alpha-hydroxy-4-cholesterin-3-one (7alphaC4), citrulline were identified by both fixed effects regression (FDR < 0.05) and PLS-DA (VIP score > 2). Some significant metabolite-GM associations were observed, including FA(16:0) with gut species Bacteroides ovatus, Bacteroides sp.D2. These findings would further prompt our understanding of the effect of cow milk on human health.
