RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to define the characteristics of acquired vitelliform lesions (AVLs) in patients with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD). DESIGN: Retrospective, observational, cross sectional study. SUBJECTS: This study included 217 eyes with AVLs associated with iAMD, and an equivalent number of control patients. METHODS: OCT scans were evaluated for qualitative and quantitative parameters at both the eye and lesion level. Eye-level parameters included the presence of: hyporeflective core drusen, intraretinal hyperreflective foci (IHRF), subretinal drusenoid deposits, macular pachyvessels, central retinal thickness, and central choroidal thickness. Lesion-level qualitative parameters included the presence of ellipsoid zone (EZ) and external limiting membrane disruption overlying the AVL, IHRF overlying the AVL, AVL overlying drusen, pachyvessels under the AVL, a solid core within AVL, and AVL location. Lesion-level quantitative characteristics included AVL height and width, AVL distance from the fovea, and sub-AVL choroidal thickness. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcomes assessed included the frequency of IHRF, the presence of macular pachyvessels, central choroidal thickness, and the dimensions (both height and width) of AVLs. RESULTS: Comparing the AVL and control groups, the frequency of IHRF (AVL: 49.3% vs. control: 26.3%) and macular pachyvessels (37.3% vs. 6.9%) was significantly higher in the AVL case group, and the central choroidal thickness (256.8 ± 88 µm vs. 207.1± 45 µm) was thicker in the AVL group. Acquired vitelliform lesions located over drusen, with overlying IHRF, or situated subfoveally, and AVL lesions with EZ disruption were found to have a greater lesion height and width compared with AVL lesions lacking these characteristics (P value < 0.001 for all). Additionally, a significant negative correlation was observed between the distance from the fovea and AVL height (Spearman rho: -0.19, P = 0.002) and width (Spearman rho: -0.30, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study represents the largest reported cohort of AVL lesions associated with iAMD. Novel findings include the higher frequency of pachyvessels in addition to the presence of a thicker choroid in these eyes, as well as the greater height and width of AVL closer to the foveal center. These findings may offer insights into pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying the development of AVL. RESUMO

PURPOSE: In this study, we identify risk factors that predict the progression of acquired vitelliform lesions (AVLs) over time. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SUBJECTS: One hundred sixty-three eyes of 132 patients with a diagnosis of intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD) with AVL. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated consecutive eyes with AMD from a retina clinic population and included 1181 patients and 2362 eyes. After excluding cases with associated geographic atrophy, macular neovascularization (MNV), vitreomacular traction, and those with <2 years of follow-up data, the final analysis cohort consisted of 163 eyes (132 patients) with ≥1 AVL. The first available visit in which an AVL was evident was considered the baseline visit, and follow-up data were collected from a visit 2 years (± 3 months) later. Progression outcomes at the follow-up visit were classified into 6 categories: resorbed, collapsed, MNV, stable, increasing, and decreasing. Subsequently, we analyzed the baseline characteristics for each category and calculated odds ratios (ORs) to predict these various outcomes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The study focused on identifying predictive factors influencing the evolution of AVL in iAMD eyes. RESULTS: In total, 163 eyes with AVL had follow-up data at 2 years. The collapsed group demonstrated a significantly greater baseline AVL height and width compared with other groups (P < 0.001). With regard to qualitative parameters, subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDDs) and intraretinal hyperreflective foci (IHRF) at the eye level, AVL located over drusen, and IHRF and external limiting membrane disruption over AVL were significantly more prevalent in the collapsed group compared with other groups (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). Odds ratios for progressing to atrophy after 2 years of follow-up, compared with the resorbed group, were significant for SDD (OR, 2.82; P = 0.048) and AVL height (OR, 1.016; P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of SDDs and greater AVL height significantly increases the risk of developing atrophy at the location of AVL after 2 years of follow-up. These findings may be of value in risk prognostication and defining patient populations for inclusion in future early intervention trials aimed at preventing progression to atrophy. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES: Proprietary or commercial disclosure may be found in the Footnotes and Disclosures at the end of this article.

RESUMO

In anti-cancer metastasis treatment, precise drug delivery to cancer cells remains a challenge. Innovative nanocomposites are developed to tackle these issues effectively. The approach involves the creation of manganese oxide (Mn3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) and their functionalization using trisodium citrate to yield functionalized Mn3O4 NPs (F-Mn3O4 NPs), with enhanced water solubility, stability, and biocompatibility. Subsequently, the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) is encapsulated with Mn3O4 NPs, resulting in DOX/Mn3O4 NPs. To achieve cell-specific targeting, These NPs are coated with HeLa cell membranes (HCM), forming HCM/DOX/Mn3O4. For further refinement, a transferrin (Tf) receptor is integrated with cracked HCM to create Tf-HCM/DOX/Mn3O4 nanocomposites (NC) with specific cell membrane targeting capabilities. The resulting Tf-HCM/DOX/Mn3O4 NC exhibits excellent drug encapsulation efficiency (97.5%) and displays triggered drug release when exposed to NIR laser irradiation in the tumor's environment (pH 5.0 and 6.5). Furthermore, these nanocomposites show resistance to macrophage uptake and demonstrate homotypic cancer cell targeting specificity, even in the presence of other tumor cells. In vitro toxicity tests show that Tf-HCM/DOX/Mn3O4 NC achieves significant anticancer activity against HeLa and BT20 cancer cells, with percentages of 76.46% and 71.36%, respectively. These results indicate the potential of Tf-HCM/DOX/Mn3O4 NC as an effective nanoplatform for chemo-photothermal therapy.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The EVEREST II study previously reported that intravitreally administered ranibizumab (IVR) combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT) achieved superior visual gain and polypoidal lesion closure compared to IVR alone in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). This follow-up study reports the long-term outcomes 6 years after initiation of the EVEREST II study. METHODS: This is a non-interventional cohort study of 90 patients with PCV from 16 international trial sites who originally completed the EVEREST II study. The long-term outcomes were assessed during a recall visit at about 6 years from commencement of EVEREST II. RESULTS: The monotherapy and combination groups contained 41 and 49 participants, respectively. The change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from baseline to year 6 was not different between the monotherapy and combination groups; - 7.4 ± 23.0 versus - 6.1 ± 22.4 letters, respectively. The combination group had greater central subfield thickness (CST) reduction compared to the monotherapy group at year 6 (- 179.9 vs - 74.2 µm, p = 0.011). Fewer eyes had subretinal fluid (SRF)/intraretinal fluid (IRF) in the combination versus monotherapy group at year 6 (35.4% vs 57.5%, p = 0.032). Factors associated with BCVA at year 6 include BCVA (year 2), CST (year 2), presence of SRF/IRF at year 2, and number of anti-VEGF treatments (years 2-6). Factors associated with presence of SRF/IRF at year 6 include combination arm (OR 0.45, p = 0.033), BCVA (year 2) (OR 1.53, p = 0.046), and presence of SRF/IRF (year 2) (OR 2.59, p = 0.042). CONCLUSION: At 6 years following the EVEREST II study, one-third of participants still maintained good vision. As most participants continued to require treatment after exiting the initial trial, ongoing monitoring and re-treatment regardless of polypoidal lesion status are necessary in PCV. RESUMO

Electrospinning is the simplest technique to produce ultrathin nanofibers, which enables the use of nanotechnology in various applications. Nanofibrous materials produced through electrospinning have garnered significant attention in biomedical applications due to their unique properties and versatile potential. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on incorporating sustainability principles into material design and production. However, electrospun nanofibers, owing to their reliance on solvents associated with significant drawbacks like toxicity, flammability, and disposal challenges, frequently fall short of meeting environmentally friendly standards. Due to the limited solvent choices and heightened concerns for safety and hygiene in modern living, it becomes imperative to carefully assess the implications of employing electrospun nanofibers in diverse applications and consumer products. This systematic review aims to comprehensively assess the current state of research and development in the field of "green and natural" electrospun polymer nanofibers as well as more fascinating and eco-friendly commercial techniques, solvent preferences, and other green routes that respect social and legal restrictions tailored for biomedical applications. We explore the utilization of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers sourced from renewable feedstocks, eco-friendly processing techniques, and the evaluation of environmental impacts. Our review highlights the potential of green and natural electrospun nanofibers to address sustainability concerns while meeting the demanding requirements of various biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, and diagnostic platforms. We analyze the advantages, challenges, and future prospects of these materials, offering insights into the evolving landscape of environmentally responsible nanofiber technology in the biomedical field.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction using swept-source OCT angiography (SS-OCTA) can provide insights into the nature and structure of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and its component parts, the polypoidal lesion (PL) and the branching neovascular network (BNN). This study aims to describe novel observations of PCV using 3D reconstruction of SS-OCTA, and to compare these observations with similar images of type I macular neovascularization (MNV) typical neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). DESIGN: Clinical case series. SUBJECTS: Patients with PCV in either eye from clinical studies conducted in a tertiary retina center. METHODS: Images with prespecified SS-OCTA imaging protocol were obtained and reconstructed in 3D. Forty neovascularization lesions (30 PCV and 10 typical nAMD) based on SS-OCTA were analyzed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The following 3 specific features were evaluated: (1) the pattern of flow signal within the PLs as either homogenous or showing internal vascular architecture; (2) the configuration of the BNN as hypermature, mature, or immature; and (3) the spatial arrangement of the PLs in relation to the BNN. Comparisons were made between PCV and typical nAMD. RESULTS: All PLs exhibited internal vascular architecture in the form of coil-like loops and none exhibited homogenous flow. Small focal nodules were present within this internal vascular architecture in 70% of PLs. Branching neovascular networks exhibited a hypermature/mature configuration (100 vs. 50%, P < 0.01) and were associated with thicker choroid compared with typical nAMD type 1 MNV (238.7 ± 104.3 vs. 155.6 ± 49.2, P = 0.02). The BNN and PL were located at distinct anteroposterior planes in 81% of the eyes. CONCLUSIONS: We identified proliferating vasculature in both the PL and the BNN. Comparison of the configuration suggests that the BNN represents a more chronic and inactive lesion than the PL. RESUMO

The novel ultra-high molecular weight polypropylene (UHMWPP) as a dispersed component was melt blended with conventional high-density polyethylene (PE) and maleic anhydride grafted-polyethylene (mPE) in different proportions through a kneader. Ultra-high molecular weight polypropylene is a high-performance polymer material that has excellent mechanical properties and toughness compared to other polymers. Mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties were presented for various UHMWPP loadings, and correlations between mechanical and rheological properties were examined. Optimal comprehensive mechanical properties are achieved when the UHMWPP content reaches approximately 50 wt%, although the elongation properties do not match those of pure PE or mPE. However, it is worth noting that the elongation properties of these blends did not match those of PE or mPE. Particularly, for the PE/UHMWPP blends, a significant drop in tensile strength was observed as the UHMWPP content decreased (from 30.24 MPa for P50U50 to 13.12 MPa for P90U10). In contrast, the mPE/UHMWPP blends demonstrated only minimal changes in tensile strength (ranging from 29 MPa for mP50U50 to 24.64 MPa for mP90U10) as UHMWPP content varied. The storage modulus of the PE/UHMWPP blends increased drastically with the UHMWPP content due to the UHMWPP chain entanglements and rigidity. Additionally, we noted a substantial reduction in the melt index of the blend system when the UHMWPP content exceeded 10% by weight.

RESUMO

Polylactides (PLAs) and lactide copolymers are biodegradable, compostable, and derived from renewable resources, offering a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based synthetic polymers owing to their advantages of comparable mechanical properties with commodity plastics and biodegradability. Their hydrolytic stability and thermal properties can affect their potential for long-lasting applications. However, stereocomplex crystallization is a robust method between isomer PLAs that allows significant amelioration in copolymer properties, such as thermal stability, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility, through substantial intermolecular interactions amid l-lactyl and d-lactyl sequences, which have been the key approach to initial degradation rate and further PLA applications. It was demonstrated that the essential parameters affecting stereocomplexation are the mixing ratio and the chain length of each unit sequence. This study deals with the molecular weight, one of the specific interactions between isomers of PLAs. A solution polymerization method was applied to control molecular weight and chain architecture. The stereocomplexation was monitored with DSC. It was confirmed that the lower molecular weight polymer showed a higher degradation rate, as a hydrolyzed fragment having a molecular weight below a certain length dissolves into the water. To systematically explore the critical contribution of molecular weights, the Langmuir system was used to observe the stereocomplexation effect and the overall degradation rate.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe the optical coherence tomography features of pachyvitelliform maculopathy (PVM), an acquired vitelliform lesion (AVL) associated with pachychoroid disease. METHODS: This study was a retrospective, multicentre, observational analysis.Medical records and multimodal imaging were reviewed in all patients with pachychoroid disease and AVL. Visual acuity, central choroidal thickness (CCT), AVL dimensions, total choroidal area, luminal choroidal area, stromal choroidal area and choroidal vascular index were measured in all eyes with PVM and compared with normal age-matched control eyes. RESULTS: Mean age of the PVM group (17 eyes of 17 patients) was 71.41 years. Average follow-up was 33.15 months. Baseline VA was 20/40 in the PVM group and declined to 20/100 (p=0.006). AVLs were all detected overlying pachyvessels with optical coherence tomography and were all hyperautofluorescent with fundus autofluorescent imaging. Mean CCT in the PVM group was significantly greater (352.35 µm) than the CCT in the control group (226.88 µm, p<0.001). Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) disruption was present in 64.71% of eyes with PVM at baseline and 41.18% developed macular atrophy at the end of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: PVM, defined by the presence of AVL associated with pachychoroid features, is a distinct novel entity of the pachychoroid disease spectrum. This study suggests a possible pathogenesis of RPE dysfunction secondary to a thick choroid, leading to accumulation of undigested photoreceptor outer segments and AVL. Clinicians should be aware of this common cause of vitelliform lesions and the poor visual prognosis due to the high risk of atrophy development.

RESUMO

Among biodegradable polymers, polylactides (PLAs) have attracted considerable interest because the monomer can be produced from renewable resources. Since their initial degradability strongly affects commercial application fields, it is necessary to manage the degradation properties of PLAs to make them more commercially attractive. To control their degradability, poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) copolymers of glycolide and isomer lactides (LAs) were synthesized, and their enzymatic and alkaline degradation rates of PLGA monolayers as functions of glycolide acid (GA) composition were systematically investigated by the Langmuir technique. The results showed that the alkaline and enzymatic degradations of PLGA monolayers were faster than those of l-polylactide (l-PLA), even though proteinase K is selectively effective in the l-lactide (l-LA) unit. Alkaline hydrolysis was strongly affected by their hydrophilicity, while the surface pressure of monolayers for enzymatic degradations was a major factor.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate 1-year efficacy, durability, and safety of faricimab among patients from Asian countries in the TENAYA/LUCERNE trials of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). METHODS: Treatment-naïve patients with nAMD were randomly assigned (1:1) to faricimab 6.0 mg up to every 16 weeks (Q16W), based on disease activity at weeks 20 and 24, or aflibercept 2.0 mg Q8W. The primary endpoint was change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from baseline averaged over weeks 40, 44, and 48. RESULTS: In the pooled TENAYA/LUCERNE trials, there were 120 (9.0%) and 1209 (91.0%) patients in the Asian (faricimab n = 61; aflibercept n = 59) and non-Asian country (faricimab n = 604; aflibercept n = 605) subgroups, respectively. In the Asian country subgroup, mean BCVA change from baseline at the primary endpoint visits was 7.1 (95% CI, 4.3-9.8) letters with faricimab and 7.2 (4.4-10.0) letters with aflibercept. In non-Asian country patients, mean vision gains were 6.1 (5.2-7.1) and 5.7 (4.8-6.7) letters with faricimab and aflibercept, respectively. At week 48, 59.6% of Asian country patients in the faricimab group achieved Q16W dosing (vs. 43.9% non-Asian) and 91.2% achieved ≥ Q12W dosing (vs. 77.5% non-Asian). Central subfield thickness reductions were similar between the subgroups, with meaningful and similar reductions from baseline observed at the primary endpoint visits and over time. Faricimab was well tolerated in both subgroups, with an acceptable safety profile. CONCLUSION: Consistent with the global TENAYA/LUCERNE findings, faricimab up to Q16W showed sustained visual and anatomical benefits in patients with nAMD from Asian and non-Asian countries. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03823287 (TENAYA); NCT03823300 (LUCERNE). Date of registration: January 30, 2019.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) and new visceral adiposity index (NVAI) are novel indices of visceral adiposity used to predict metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in Asian populations. However, the relationships of CVAI and NVAI with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have not been investigated. We aimed to characterize the relationships of CVAI and NVAI with the prevalence of CKD in Korean adults. METHODS: A total of 14,068 participants in the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (6,182 men and 7,886 women) were included. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were employed to compare the associations between indices of adiposity and CKD, and a logistic regression model was used to characterize the relationships of CVAI and NVAI with CKD prevalence. RESULTS: The areas under the ROC curves for CVAI and NVAI were significantly larger than for the other indices, including the visceral adiposity index and lipid accumulation product, in both men and women (all P<0.001). In addition, high CVAI or NVAI was significantly associated with a high CKD prevalence in both men (odds ratio [OR], 2.14; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.31 to 3.48 in CVAI and OR, 6.47; 95% CI, 2.91 to 14.38 in NVAI, P<0.05) and women (OR, 4.87; 95% CI, 1.85 to 12.79 in CVAI and OR, 3.03; 95% CI, 1.35 to 6.82 in NVAI, P<0.05); this association remained significant after adjustment for multiple confounding factors in men and women. CONCLUSION: CVAI and NVAI are positively associated with CKD prevalence in a Korean population. CVAI and NVAI may be useful for the identification of CKD in Asian populations, including in Korea.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic differentiation factor 1 (NEUROD1) is frequently overexpressed in small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). NEUROD1 plays an important role in promoting malignant behavior and survival. METHODS: In this study, we evaluated the association between putative functional polymorphisms in 45 NEUROD1 target genes and chemotherapy response and survival outcomes in 261 patients with SCLC. Among the 100 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) studied, two were significantly associated with both chemotherapy response and overall survival (OS) of patients with SCLC. RESULTS: The SNP rs3806915C>A in semaphorin 6A (SEMA6A) gene was significantly associated with better chemotherapy response and OS (p = 0.04 and p = 0.04, respectively). The SNP rs11265375C>T in nescient helix-loop helix 1 (NHLH1) gene was also associated with better chemotherapy response and OS (p = 0.04 and p = 0.02, respectively). Luciferase assay showed a significantly higher promoter activity of SEMA6A with the rs3806915 A allele than C allele in H446 lung cancer cells (p = 4 × 10-6 ). The promoter activity of NHLH1 showed a significantly higher with the rs11265375 T allele than C allele (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that SEMA6A rs3806915C>A and NHLH1 rs11265375C>T polymorphisms affect the promoter activity and expression of the genes, which may affect the survival outcome of patients with SCLC.

RESUMO

UV-curable coatings have numerous advantages, including environmental sustainability due to 100% solid content, economic feasibility attributable to relatively fast curing time, decent appearance, mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance. However, UV-curable polyurethane acrylate coatings on metals apparently restrict their engineering applications owing to low mechanical properties and poor thermal stability, giving UV-curable coatings less flexibility and formability. In this study, we evaluated the property change of films according to the type of reactive diluents that lowers the viscosity of UV-curing coatings for pre-coated metal and has a substantial effect on the curing rate, viscoelastic properties, adhesive properties, and flexibility of the film. Moreover, there are many changes in the properties of coatings according to varied curing conditions in order to evaluate the oxygen inhibition phenomenon during the curing process in the atmosphere. In particular, to evaluate the effect of reactive diluents on forming formability, which is the most crucial property for the pre-coated metal, this study used conventional formability tests, such as t-bending or the Erichsen test. Moreover, a cross-die cup drawing mold with a similar form as failure and Safety Zone was utilized in order to obtain clearer information on its actual formability. The analysis on the effect of failure and safety zone on the material used in press forming was conducted by assessing limit punch height and forming a limit diagram of the manufactured film according to varied reactive diluents.

RESUMO

There have been recent advances in basic research and clinical studies in polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). A recent, large-scale, population-based study found systemic factors, such as male gender and smoking, were associated with PCV, and a recent systematic review reported plasma C-reactive protein, a systemic biomarker, was associated with PCV. Growing evidence points to an association between pachydrusen, recently proposed extracellular deposits associated with the thick choroid, and the risk of development of PCV. Many recent studies on diagnosis of PCV have focused on applying criteria from noninvasive multimodal retinal imaging without requirement of indocyanine green angiography. There have been attempts to develop deep learning models, a recent subset of artificial intelligence, for detecting PCV from different types of retinal imaging modality. Some of these deep learning models were found to have high performance when they were trained and tested on color retinal images with corresponding images from optical coherence tomography. The treatment of PCV is either a combination therapy using verteporfin photodynamic therapy and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), or anti-VEGF monotherapy, often used with a treat-and-extend regimen. New anti-VEGF agents may provide more durable treatment with similar efficacy, compared with existing anti-VEGF agents. It is not known if they can induce greater closure of polypoidal lesions, in which case, combination therapy may still be a mainstay. Recent evidence supports long-term follow-up of patients with PCV after treatment for early detection of recurrence, particularly in patients with incomplete closure of polypoidal lesions.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Several studies have shown that zinc has a significant influence on erectile function. However, no studies evaluating the cellular distribution of free zinc in penile erectile tissue have been performed. Therefore, this study aimed to test whether free zinc is present in penile tissue and whether it may be involved in the electrical stimulation (ES)-induced penile erection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects for this study were 26 young (8-week-old) male C57BL/6J mice. After the cavernous nerve was exposed through a midline stomach incision, 14 mice received ES of the cavernous nerve (ES group), whereas 12 mice did not (control group). Intracavernous pressure (ICP) (consisting of 10 V at a duration of 1 min, frequency of 12 Hz and a pulse width of 1 m/s) was recorded during ES. Immediately after ICP was recorded, penile tissues were harvested for histological and biochemical analysis, including analysis of zinc transporter 3 (ZnT3) and intracellular free zinc levels. RESULTS: The expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and endothelial NOS (eNOS) in penile tissue was significantly greater in the ES group than in the control group (p=0.036 and 0.016, respectively). And then, ZnT3 and intracellular free zinc were present in the penile tissue of both groups. However, ZnT3 immunofluorescence in the ES group was more intense in the dorsal nerve bundle (22% increase, p=0.032). The ES group also showed higher intensity N-(6-methoxy-8-quinolyl)-para-toluenesulfonamide (TSQ) fluorescence signals indicative of intracellular free zinc level in the penile tissue compared to the control group (49% increase in dorsal nerve bundle, p=0.001; 50% increase in corpus cavernosum, p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study supported the expression and distribution of free zinc in penile tissue and increased levels after penile erection. Therefore, this study provides anatomical evidence for the potential role of free zinc in penile erection.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To characterize geographic atrophy (GA) and evaluate differences between Asians and non-Asians. DESIGN: Multicenter, retrospective case series. PARTICIPANTS: Subjects aged ≥ 50 years with GA secondary to age-related macular degeneration in the absence of neovascularization in the study eye and follow-up of ≥ 2 years. METHODS: The GA lesion characterized at baseline and last follow-up based on multimodal imaging (fundus autofluorescence [FAF], near infrared [NIR], and spectral domain-OCT). Patients were grouped as either Asian or non-Asian. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Comparison of (1) phenotypes of GA lesions (size, foveal involvement, number of foci, drusen background, and choroid background) and (2) growth rates of GA. RESULTS: A total of 144 patients (169 eyes) with distribution of 50.9% Asians and 49.1% non-Asians. The age and sex were similar between Asians and non-Asians (Asians: mean age, 77.2 ± 10.1 years, 47.9% female; non-Asians: mean age, 79.7 ± 8.4 years, 58.7% female). Asians exhibited thicker choroids (167 ± 74 versus [vs.] 134 ± 56 µm; P < 0.01) and lower prevalence of drusen (40.7% vs. 66.3%; P < 0.01). At baseline, the GA area was smaller in Asians vs. non-Asians (NIR, 3.7 ± 4.6 vs. 6.3 ± 6.8 mm2; P = 0.01: FAF, 2.4 ± 3.4 vs. 8.4 ± 9.6 mm2; P < 0.01). Asians had fewer GA foci (1.7 ± 1.3 vs. 2.7 ± 2.2; P < 0.01) compared to non-Asians. The proportion with diffused or banded FAF junctional zone pattern was similar between Asians and non-Asians (44.2% vs. 60.2%; P = 0.20). Asians had a slower GA lesion growth rate than non-Asians (NIR, 0.7 vs. 1.9 mm2/year; P < 0.01: FAF, 0.3 vs. 2.0 mm2/year; P < 0.01: NIR, 0.2 vs. 0.4 mm/year; P < 0.01 square root transformed: FAF, 0.1 vs. 0.3 mm/year; P < 0.01 square root transformed). The factors associated with GA lesion growth rate are (from the highest effect size) ethnicity, junctional zone FAF pattern, baseline GA area, and number of GA foci. Higher GA lesion growth rate was observed in both Asian and non-Asian subgroups, with drusen or lesion size and FAF patterns meeting inclusion criteria of recent therapeutic trials, but growth rate remained significantly slower in Asians. Eyes with baseline lesion ≥ 5 mm2 showed the highest growth rate, and the difference between ethnicities was no longer significant (2.6 vs. 3.3 mm2/year; P = 0.14). CONCLUSIONS: There are differences in GA lesion phenotype, associated features, and growth rate between Asians and non-Asian subjects. RESUMO

In this study, a simple approach was described to investigate the theoretical models for electrospun polymer nanofiber-reinforced nanocomposites. For predicting the tensile strength of the electrospun nylon 6 nanofiber-reinforced polyurethane acrylate composites, conventional Pukanszky, Nicolais-Narkis, Halpin-Tsai, and Neilson models were used, while for Young's modulus, Halpin-Tsai, modified Halpin-Tsai, and Hui-Shia models were used. As per the Pukanszky model, composite films showed better interaction since the values of the interaction parameter, B, were more than 3. Similarly, the value of an interfacial parameter, K, was less than 1.21 (K = -5, for the curve fitting) as per the Nicolais-Narkis model, which indicated better interfacial interaction. For composite films, the modified Halpin-Tsai model was revised again by introducing the orientation factor, α, which was 0.333 for the randomly oriented continuous nanofiber-reinforced composites, and the exponential shape factor, ξ = (2l/d)e-avf-b, which showed the best agreement with the experimental Young's modulus results. Based on mentioned remarks, these models would be applicable for estimating the tensile strength and Young's modulus of electrospun nanofiber-reinforced polymer composite films.

RESUMO

We investigated the relationship between pachydrusen and choroidal thickness and age in eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and fellow eyes, compared to eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). This retrospective study included 89 eyes with PCV and 146 eyes with CSC. The number, location, and shape of the pachydrusen and their association with choroidal thickness and age were analyzed. PCV eyes showed pachydrusen more frequently than eyes with CSC (52% vs. 20%, p < 0.001). Large solitary type and clustered type were more frequent in PCV eyes compared to CSC eyes (p = 0.003 and p = 0.001, respectively). Subfoveal choroidal thickness was associated with pachydrusen in eyes with PCV (odds ratio [OR] 1.006, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.001−1.011, p = 0.027), while age was associated with pachydrusen in CSC eyes (OR 1.137, 95% CI, 1.073−1.205; p < 0.001). Pachydrusen were localized directly over the pachyvessel on optical coherence tomographic findings in approximately two thirds of PCV eyes and fellow eyes (62% and 67%, respectively). Risk factors for pachydrusen differ according to diseases. The presence of pachydrusen was associated with choroidal thickness in PCV, while the association with age was more prominent in CSC.
