RESUMO

Recently, signatures of superconductivity with critical temperature from 20 to 30 K have been reported in pressured trilayer nickelate La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ through a pressure-induced structure transition. Here we explore the evolution of electronic structures and electronic correlations in different phases of La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ under corresponding pressure regions, by using density functional theory (DFT) combined with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Similar to bilayer superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7}$, the electronic bands in superconducting La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ are dominated by Ni-3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and 3$d_{z^2}$ orbits near the Fermi level, in contrast, the inner Ni-O plane in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ generates a doublet hole-pocket Fermi surfaces around the Brillouin-zone corner, meanwhile one branch of the Ni-$3d_{z^2}$ bands is pushed very close above the Fermi level, which can induce an electron pocket through small electron doping. The DFT+DMFT simulations suggest that the electronic correlations only give minor modification to the Fermi surfaces, meanwhile the Ni-$3d_{z^2}$ and 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ states on outer Ni-O layers have considerable greater mass enhancements than on the inner layer. The sensitiveness of electronic structure under doping and unique layer dependence of correlation suggest a distinct superconducting mechanism with respect to bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7}$. Based on the DFT and DFT+DMFT simulations, we eventually derive a trilayer effective tight-binding model, which can produce rather precise electronic bands and Fermi surfaces, hence can serve as an appropriate model to further study the superconducting mechanism and paring symmetry in trilayer La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD), hemodialysis and kidney transplantation are the three therapies to treat uremia. However, PD is discontinued for peritoneal membrane fibrosis (PMF) and loss of peritoneal transport function (PTF) due to damage from high concentrations of glucose in PD fluids (PDFs). The mechanism behind PMF is unclear, and there are no available biomarkers for the evaluation of PMF and PTF. Using microarray screening, we found that a new long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), RPL29P2, was upregulated in the PM (peritoneal membrane) of long-term PD patients, and its expression level was correlated with PMF severity and the PTF loss. In vitro and rat model assays suggested that lncRNA RPL29P2 targets miR-1184 and induces the expression of collagen type I alpha 1 chain (COL1A1). Silencing RPL29P2 in the PD rat model might suppress the HG-induced phenotypic transition of Human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs), alleviate HG-induced fibrosis and prevent the loss of PTF. Overall, our findings revealed that lncRNA RPL29P2, which targets miR-1184 and collagen, may represent a useful marker and therapeutic target of PMF in PD patients.

BACKGROUND: Neonates with immature auditory function (eg, weak/absent middle ear muscle reflex) could conceivably be vulnerable to noise-induced hearing loss; however, it is unclear if neonates show evidence of hearing loss following MRI acoustic noise exposure. PURPOSE: To explore the auditory effects of MRI acoustic noise in neonates. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: Two independent cohorts of neonates (N = 19 and N = 18; mean gestational-age, 38.75 ± 2.18 and 39.01 ± 1.83 weeks). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: T1-weighted three-dimensional gradient-echo sequence, T2-weighted fast spin-echo sequence, single-shot echo-planar imaging-based diffusion-tensor imaging, single-shot echo-planar imaging-based diffusion-kurtosis imaging and T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequence at 3.0 T. ASSESSMENT: All neonates wore ear protection during scan protocols lasted ~40 minutes. Equivalent sound pressure levels (SPLs) were measured for both cohorts. In cohort1, left- and right-ear auditory brainstem response (ABR) was measured before (baseline) and after (follow-up) MRI, included assessment of ABR threshold, wave I, III and V latencies and interpeak interval to determine the functional status of auditory nerve and brainstem. In cohort2, baseline and follow-up left- and right-ear distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) amplitudes were assessed at 1.2 to 7.0 kHz to determine cochlear function. STATISTICAL TEST: Wilcoxon signed-rank or paired t-tests with Bonferroni's correction were used to compare the differences between baseline and follow-up ABR and DPOAE measures. RESULTS: Equivalent SPLs ranged from 103.5 to 113.6 dBA. No significant differences between baseline and follow-up were detected in left- or right-ear ABR measures (P > 0.999, Bonferroni corrected) in cohort1, or in DPOAE levels at 1.2 to 7.0 kHz in cohort2 (all P > 0.999 Bonferroni corrected except for left-ear levels at 3.5 and 7.0 kHz with corrected P = 0.138 and P = 0.533). DATA CONCLUSION: A single 40-minute 3-T MRI with equivalent SPLs of 103.5-113.6 dBA did not result in significant transient disruption of auditory function, as measured by ABR and DPOAE, in neonates with adequate hearing protection. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 2. TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 5.

A small fraction of NOx (<1%) always exists in CO2 feedstock (e.g. exhausted gas), which can significantly reduce the efficiency of CO2 electroreduction by ∼30%. Hence, electrochemical denitrification is the precondition of CO2 electroreduction. The pH effect is a key factor, and can be used to tune the selectivity between N2 and N2O production in electrochemical denitrification. However, there has been much controversy for many years about the origin of pH dependence in electrocatalysis. To this end, we present a new scheme to accurately model the pH dependence of the electrochemical mechanism. An extremely small pH variation from pH 12.7 to pH 14 can be accurately reproduced for N2O production. More importantly, the obviously different pH dependence of N2 production, compared to N2O, can be attributed to a cascade path. In other words, the N2 was produced from the secondary conversion of the as-produced N2O molecule (the major product), instead of the original reactant NO. This is further supported by more than 35 experiments over varying catalysts (Fe, Ni, Pd, Cu, Co, Pt and Ag), partial pressures (20%, 50% and 100%) and potentials (from -0.2 to 0.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). All in all, the insights herein overturn long-lasting views in the field of NO electroreduction and suggest that rational design should steer away from catalyst engineering toward reactor optimization.

A novel regression model, monotonic inner relation-based non-linear partial least squares (MIR-PLS), is proposed to address complex issues like limited observations, multicollinearity, and nonlinearity in Chinese Medicine (CM) dose-effect relationship experimental data. MIR-PLS uses a piecewise mapping function based on monotonic cubic splines to model the non-linear inner relations between input and output score vectors. Additionally, a new weight updating strategy (WUS) is developed by leveraging the properties of monotonic functions. The proposed MIR-PLS method was compared with five well-known PLS variants: standard PLS, quadratic PLS (QPLS), error-based QPLS (EB-QPLS), neural network PLS (NNPLS), and spline PLS (SPL-PLS), using CM dose-effect relationship datasets and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that MIR-PLS exhibits general applicability, achieving excellent predictive performances in the presence or absence of significant non-linear relationships. Furthermore, the model is not limited to CM dose-effect relationship research and can be applied to other regression tasks.

BACKGROUND: Compared to midazolam, remimazolam has a faster onset and offset of hypnotic effect, as well as cardiorespiratory stability, this study aims to determine the 90% effective dose (ED90) of remimazolam to inhibit responses to insertion of a duodenoscope during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). METHODS: A dose-response study was carried out undergoing ERCP who received remimazolam-alfentanil anesthesia using 10 µg/kg of alfentanil between September 2021 and November 2021. The initial dose of remimazolam was 0.2 mg/kg. The dose was then decided based on the responses of earlier patients by exploiting the sequential ascend and descend according to a 9: 1 biased coin design. Upon failure, the dose of remimazolam was increased by 0.025 mg/kg in the next patient. When the insertion was successful, the succeeding patient was randomized to an identical dose or a dose that was lower by 0.025 mg/kg.The ED90 of remimazolam for inhibiting responses to the insertion of a duodenoscope during ERCP was calculated. Adverse events and complications of remimazolam were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 55 elderly patients (age > 65) were included in the study. 45 successfully anesthetized patients, and 10 unsuccessfully. The ED90 of remimazolam was 0.300 mg/kg (95% CI = 0.287-0.320). ED95 was 0.315 (95% CI = 0.312-0.323) and ED99 was 0.323 (95% CI = 0.323-0.325). Among the patients, 9 patients developed hypotension, 2 patients developed bradycardia and 1 patient developed tachycardia, and hypoxia occurred in 2 patients. CONCLUSIONS: A loading dose of 0.300 mg / kg of remimazolam for elderly patients undergoing ERCP can safely, effectively, and quickly induce patients to fall asleep and inhibit responses to the insertion of a duodenoscope. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study protocol was registered at the website ClinicalTrials.gov on 22/09/2021(NCT05053763).

The objective of this study is to evaluate the pattern of bone mineral density (BMD) in native Jiaxing women, and to investigate their awareness of osteoporosis. A total of 538 native Jiaxing women aged 40 to 60 years were recruited from January 2022 to December 2023 when they had routine examinations in the physical examination center of Jiaxing Maternal and Child Health Hospital. The Chinese version of Osteoporosis Prevention and Cognition Tool was used to evaluate participants' cognitive level of osteoporosis. BMD of participants' lumbar spine (L1-L4) and left hip (Neck/Troch/Ward) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The mean total score of the awareness about osteoporosis (general knowledge, complications, and prevention) was 22.08 ±â€…2.74, which was suboptimal. The higher the education level, the higher the score of awareness (P < .01). Medical staff had the highest awareness rate of osteoporosis and the farmer had the lowest. Lumber spine and hip BMD of all sites was significantly decreased with increasing age (P < .001). Premenopausal women had higher BMD than postmenopausal women at all lumbar spine and hip sites (P < .01). The overall frequency of osteoporosis was 10.8% in the lumbar spine, 8.6% in the total hip, and 17.7% in either site. Osteoporosis and osteopenia are highly prevalent among native Jiaxing women but their awareness of osteoporosis is inadequate. To reduce the prevalence of osteoporosis, especially among the unemployed, we should carry out effective health education through multimedia to raise their awareness of osteoporosis. In addition, menopausal hormone therapy should also be considered in menopausal women.

It has been reported that it was selective to produce ammonia on metallic cobalt in the electrocatalytic nitric oxide reduction reaction (eNORR), where hexagonal close-packed (hcp) cobalt outperforms face-centered cubic (fcc) cobalt. However, hydroxylamine is more selectively produced on a cobalt single-atom catalyst (Co-SAC). Herein, we uncover the structural sensitivity over hcp-Co, fcc-Co, and Co-SAC in eNORR by employing a recently developed constant potential simulation method and microkinetic modeling. It was found that the superior activity for ammonia production on hcp-Co can be attributed to its facile electron and proton transfer and a stronger lateral suppression effect from NO* over fcc-Co. The exceptional hydroxylamine selectivity on Co-SAC is due to the modified electronic structure, namely, a positively charged active center. It was found that it is more favorable to produce NOH* over hcp-Co and fcc-Co, while HNO* is more preferable on Co-SAC, which are firmly correlated with the vertical and strong NO adsorption on the former and the moderate adsorption on the latter. In other words, a key factor for selectivity control is the first step of NO* protonation. Therefore, the local structure and electronic structure of the catalysts can be critical in regulating the activity and selectivity in eNORR.

The thermal stability of DNA immobilized on a solid surface is one of the factors that affects the efficiency of solid-phase amplification (SP-PCR). Although variable temperature amplification ensures high specificity of the reaction by precisely controlling temperature changes, excessively high temperatures during denaturation can negatively affect DNA stability. Formamide (FA) enables DNA denaturation at lower temperatures, showing potential for SP-PCR. Research on FA's impacts on DNA microarrays is still limited, necessitating further optimization in exploring the characteristics of FA in SP-PCR according to particular application needs. We immobilized DNA on a chip using a crosslinker and generated DNA microarrays through bridge amplification based on FA denaturation on our automated reaction device. We optimized the denaturation and hybridization parameters of FA, achieving a maximum cluster density of 2.83 × 104 colonies/mm2. Compared to high-temperature denaturation, FA denaturation required a lower template concentration and milder reaction conditions and produced higher cluster density, demonstrating that FA effectively improves hybridization rates on surfaces. Regarding the immobilized DNA stability, the FA group exhibited a 45% loss of DNA, resulting in a 15% higher DNA retention rate compared to the high-temperature group, indicating that FA can better maintain DNA stability. Our study suggests that using FA improves the immobilized DNA stability and amplification efficiency in SP-PCR.

This paper proposes a dual-loop discrete-time adaptive control (DDAC) method for three-phase PWM rectifiers, which considers inductance-parameter-mismatched and DC load disturbances. A discrete-time model of the three-phase PWM rectifier is established using the forward Euler discretization method, and a dual-loop discrete-time feedback linearization control (DDFLC) is given. Based on the DDFLC, the DDAC is designed. Firstly, an adaptive inductance disturbance observer (AIDO) based on the gradient descent method is proposed in the current control loop. The AIDO is used to estimate lump disturbances caused by mismatched inductance parameters and then compensate for these disturbances in the current controller, ensuring its strong robustness to inductance parameters. Secondly, a load parameter adaptive law (LPAL) based on the discrete-time Lyapunov theory is proposed for the voltage control loop. The LPAL estimates the DC load parameter in real time and subsequently adjusts it in the voltage controller, achieving DC load adaptability. Finally, simulation and experimental results show that the DDAC exhibits better steady and dynamic performances, less current harmonic content than the DDFLC and the dual-loop discrete-time PI control (DDPIC), and a stronger robustness to inductance parameters and DC load disturbances.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune uveitis is an inflammatory disease triggered by an aberrant immune response. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived small extracellular vesicles (MSC-sEVs) are emerging as potential therapeutic agents for this condition. CD73, an ectoenzyme present on MSC-sEVs, is involved in mitigating inflammation by converting extracellular adenosine monophosphate into adenosine. We hypothesize that the inhibitory effect of MSC-sEVs on experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) could be partially attributed to the surface expression of CD73. METHODS: To investigate novel therapeutic approaches for autoimmune uveitis, we performed lentiviral transduction to overexpress CD73 on the surface of MSC-sEVs, yielding CD73-enriched MSC-sEVs (sEVs-CD73). Mice with interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP)-induced EAU were grouped randomly and treated with 50 µg MSC-sEVs, vector infected MSC-sEVs, sEVs-CD73 or PBS via single tail vein injection. We evaluated the clinical and histological features of the induced mice and analyzed the proportion and functional capabilities of T helper cells. Furthermore, T-cells were co-cultured with various MSC-sEVs in vitro, and we quantified the resulting inflammatory response to assess the potential therapeutic benefits of sEVs-CD73. RESULTS: Compared to MSC-sEVs, sEVs-CD73 significantly alleviates EAU, leading to reduced inflammation and diminished tissue damage. Treatment with sEVs-CD73 results in a decreased proportion of Th1 cells in the spleen, draining lymph nodes, and eyes, accompanied by an increased proportion of regulatory T-cells (Treg cells). In vitro assays further reveal that sEVs-CD73 inhibits T-cell proliferation, suppresses Th1 cells differentiation, and enhances Treg cells proportion. CONCLUSION: Over-expression of CD73 on MSC-sEVs enhances their immunosuppressive effects in EAU, indicating that sEVs-CD73 has the potential as an efficient immunotherapeutic agent for autoimmune uveitis.

Sesame seeds are important resources for relieving oxidation stress-related diseases. Although a significant variation in seeds' antioxidant capability is observed, the underlying biochemical and molecular basis remains elusive. Thus, this study aimed to reveal major seed components and key molecular mechanisms that drive the variability of seeds' antioxidant activity (AOA) using a panel of 400 sesame accessions. The seeds' AOA, total flavonoid, and phenolic contents varied from 2.03 to 78.5%, 0.072 to 3.104 mg CAE/g, and 2.717 to 21.98 mg GAE/g, respectively. Analyses revealed that flavonoids and phenolic acids are the main contributors to seeds' AOA variation, irrespective of seed coat color. LC-MS-based polyphenol profiling of high (HA) and low (LA) antioxidant seeds uncovered 320 differentially accumulated phenolic compounds (DAPs), including 311 up-regulated in HA seeds. Tricin, persicoside, 5,7,4',5'-tetrahydro-3',6-dimethoxyflavone, 8-methoxyapigenin, and 6,7,8-tetrahydroxy-5-methoxyflavone were the top five up-regulated in HA. Comparative transcriptome analysis at three seed developmental stages identified 627~2357 DEGs and unveiled that differential regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and stilbene biosynthesis were the key underlying mechanisms of seed antioxidant capacity variation. Major differentially regulated phenylpropanoid structural genes and transcription factors were identified. SINPZ0000571 (MYB), SINPZ0401118 (NAC), and SINPZ0500871 (C3H) were the most highly induced TFs in HA. Our findings may enhance quality breeding.

Nanoscale graphene-semiconductor composite photocatalysts with fascinating properties in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution have inspired numerous interests in broad research fields. The architectures with efficient light response and promoting charge separation at the interface between reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and semiconductor are critical, yet synthesizing them remains a formidable challenge. Herein, the photodiode array-like LaNiO3/N,P-RGO (LNO/N,P-RGO) nanoreactor was constructed using an innovative strategy of acid etching-induced nanocutting self-assembly. Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate working as both a nitrogen phosphorus co-dopant and an acid etching reagent, cuts perovskite LaNiO3 (LNO) nanoparticles into nanorods, which are bonded evenly on the nitrogen phosphorus co-doped reduced graphene oxide (N,P-RGO) to form an n-n semiconductor heterojunction LNO/N,P-RGO as a photodiode array-like nanoreactor via hydrothermal treatment. The photodiode array-like nanostructure exposes more active sites that are conducive to light absorption. The robust Ni-C and P-O bonds promote the narrowing of space-charge region at the interface by UV irradiation, thereby improving the transport of photogenerated carriers by visible light irradiation. The LNO/N,P-RGO nanoreactor exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance with a yield of up to 354 µmol g-1 h-1 under UV-visible light, which is 50 times higher than that of pure perovskite LNO, and it also displays favorable recycling stability.

The glioblastoma brain tumour (GBM) stands out as the most aggressive and resistant-to-treatment malignancy. Nevertheless, the gut-brain connection plays a pivotal role in influencing the growth and activation of the central nervous system. In this particular investigation, we aimed to assess and characterize the gut microbial ecosystem in GBM patients, both quantitatively and qualitatively. We collected faecal samples from 15 healthy volunteers and 25 GBM patients. To delve into the microbial content, we employed PCR-DGGE, targeting the V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene, and conducted qPCR to measure the levels of crucial intestinal bacteria. For a more in-depth analysis, high-throughput sequencing was performed on a selection of 20 random faecal samples (10 from healthy individuals and 10 from GBM patients), targeting the V3+V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Our findings from examining the richness and diversity of the gut microbiota unveiled that GBM patients exhibited significantly higher microbial diversity compared to healthy individuals. At the phylum level, Proteobacteria saw a significant increase, while Firmicutes experienced a noteworthy decrease in the GBM group. Moving down to the family level, we observed significantly elevated levels of Enterobacteriaceae, Bacteroidaceae, and Lachnospiraceae in GBM patients, while levels of Veillonellaceae, Rikenellaceae, and Prevotellaceae were notably lower. Delving into genera statistics, we noted a substantial increase in the abundance of Parasutterella, Escherichia-Shigella, and Bacteroides, alongside significantly lower levels of Ruminococcus 2, Faecalibacterium, and Prevotella_9 in the GBM group compared to the control group. Furthermore, when examining specific species, we found a significant increase in Bacteroides vulgatus and Escherichia coli in the GBM group. These observations collectively indicate a marked dysbiosis in the gut microbial composition of GBM patients. Additionally, the GBM group exhibited notably higher levels of alpha diversity when compared to the control group. This increase in diversity suggests a significant bacterial overgrowth in the gut of GBM patients in contrast to the controls. As a result, this research opens up potential avenues to gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms, pathways, and potential treatments for GBM, stemming from the significant implications of gut microbial dysbiosis in these patients.

High water and pharmaceutical and care products (PPCPs) bounded in sludge flocs limit its utilization and disposal. The advanced oxidation process of perxymonosulfate (PMS) catalyzed by iron salts has been widely used in sludge conditioning. In this study, two iron-rich minerals pyrite and siderite were proposed to enhance sludge dewatering performance and remove the target contaminant of triclosan (TCS). The permanent release of Fe2+ in the activation of PMS made siderite more effective in enhancing sludge dewater with capillary suction time (CST) diminishing by 60.5 %, specific resistance to filtration (SRF) decreasing by 79.2 %, and bound water content (BWC) dropping from 37.1 % to 2.6 % at siderite/PMS dosages of 0.36/0.20 mmol/g-TSS after 20 min of pretreatment. Pyrite/PMS performed slightly inferior under the same conditions and the corresponding CST and SRF decreased by 51.5 % and 71.8 % while the BWC only declined to 17.8 %. Rheological characterization was employed to elucidate the changes in sludge dewatering performance, with siderite/PMS treated sludge showing a 48.3 % reduction in thixotropy, higher than 28.4 % of pyrite/PMS. Oscillation and creep tests further demonstrated the significantly weakened viscoelastic behavior of the sludge by siderite/PMS pretreatment. For TCS mineralization removal, siderite/PMS achieved a high removal efficiency of 43.9 %, in comparison with 39.9 % for pyrite/PMS. The reduction in the sludge solids phase contributed the most to the TCS removal. Free radical quenching assays and EPR spectroscopy showed that both siderite/PMS and pyrite/PMS produced SO4-·  and ·OH, with the latter acting as the major radicals. Besides, the dosage of free radicals generated from siderite/PMS exhibited a lower time-dependence, which also allowed it to outperform in destroying EPS matrix, neutralizing the negative Zeta potential of sludge flocs, and mineralizing macromolecular organic matter.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Xinyang tablet (XYT) has been used for heart failure (HF) for over twenty years in clinical practice, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains poorly understood. AIMS OF THE STUDY: In the present study, we aimed to explore the protective effects of XYT in HF in vivo and in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Transverse aortic constriction was performed in vivo to establish a mouse model of cardiac pressure overload. Echocardiography, tissue staining, and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) were examined to evaluate the protective effects of XYT on cardiac function and structure. Adenosine 5'-triphosphate production, reactive oxygen species staining, and measurement of malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase was used to detect mitochondrial damage. Mitochondrial ultrastructure was observed by transmission electron microscope. Immunofluorescence staining, qPCR, and Western blotting were performed to evaluate the effect of XYT on the mitochondrial unfolded protein response and mitophagy, and to identify its potential pharmacological mechanism. In vitro, HL-1 cells and neonatal mouse cardiomyocytes were stimulated with Angiotensin II to establish the cell model. Western blotting, qPCR, immunofluorescence staining, and flow cytometry were utilized to determine the effects of XYT on cardiomyocytes. HL-1 cells overexpressing receptor-interacting serum/three-protein kinase 3 (RIPK3) were generated by transfection of RIPK3-overexpressing lentiviral vectors. Cells were then co-treated with XYT to determine the molecular mechanisms. RESULTS: In the present study, XYT was found to exerta protective effect on cardiac function and structure in the pressure overload mice. And it was also found XYT reduced mitochondrial damage by enhancing mitochondrial unfolded protein response and restoring mitophagy. Further studies showed that XYT achieved its cardioprotective role through regulating the RIPK3/FUN14 domain containing 1 (FUNDC1) signaling. Moreover, the overexpression of RIPK3 successfully reversed the XYT-induced protective effects and significantly attenuated the positive effects on the mitochondrial unfolded protein response and mitophagy. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that XYT prevented pressure overload-induced HF through regulating the RIPK3/FUNDC1-mediated mitochondrial unfolded protein response and mitophagy. The information gained from this study provides a potential strategy for attenuating mitochondrial damage in the context of pressure overload-induced heart failure using XYT.

Studying the response of physiological and xylem anatomical traits under cadmium stress is helpful to understand plants' response to heavy metal stress. Here, seedlings of Pinus thunbergii Parl. were treated with 50, 100 and 150 mg kg-1 Cd2+ for 28 days. Cadmium and nonstructural carbohydrate content of leaves, stems and roots, root Cd2+ flux, cadmium distribution pattern in stem xylem and phloem, stem xylem hydraulic traits, cell wall component fractions of stems and roots, phytohormonal content such as abscisic acid, gibberellic acid 3, molecule -indole-3-acetic acid, and jasmonic acid from both leaves and roots, as well as xylem anatomical traits from both stems and roots were measured. Root Cd2+ flux increased from 50 to 100 mmol L-1 Cd2+ stress, however it decreased at 150 mmol L-1 Cd2+. Cellulose and hemicellulose in leaves, stems and roots did not change significantly under cadmium stress, while pectin decreased significantly. The nonstructural carbohydrate content of both leaves and stems showed significant changes under cadmium stress while the root nonstructural carbohydrate content was not affected. In both leaves and roots, the abscisic acid content significantly increased under cadmium stress, while the gibberellic acid 3, indole-3-acetic acid and jasmonic acid methylester content significantly decreased. Both xylem specific hydraulic conductivity and xylem water potential decreased with cadmium stress, however tracheid diameter and double wall thickness of the stems and roots were not affected. High cadmium intensity was found in both the stem xylem and phloem in all cadmium stressed treatments. Our study highlighted the in situ observation of cadmium distribution in both the xylem and phloem, and demonstrated the instant response of physiological traits such as xylem water potential, xylem specific hydraulic conductivity, root Cd2+ flux, nonstructural carbohydrate content, as well as phytohormonal content under cadmium stress, and the less affected traits such as xylem anatomical traits, cellulose and hemicellulose.

Mn-based mullite oxides AMn2O5 (A = lanthanide, Y, Bi) is a novel type of ternary catalyst in terms of their electronic and geometric structures. The coexistence of pyramid Mn3+-O and octahedral Mn4+-O makes the d-orbital selectively active toward various catalytic reactions. The alternative edge- and corner-sharing stacking configuration constructs the confined active sites and abundant active oxygen species. As a result, they tend to show superior catalytic behaviors and thus gain great attention in environmental treatment and energy conversion and storage. In environmental applications, Mn-based mullites have been demonstrated to be highly active toward low-temperature oxidization of CO, NO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc. Recent research further shows that mullites decompose O3 and ozonize VOCs from -20 °C to room temperature. Moreover, mullites enhance oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and sulfur reduction reactions (SRR), critical kinetic steps in air-battery and Li-S batteries, respectively. Their distinctive structures also facilitate applications in gas-sensitive sensing, ionic conduction, high mobility dielectrics, oxygen storage, piezoelectricity, dehydration, H2O2 decomposition, and beyond. A comprehensive review from basic physicochemical properties to application certainly not only gains a full picture of mullite oxides but also provides new insights into designing heterogeneous catalysts.

The capture of individual cells using microfluidic chips represents a widely adopted and efficient approach for investigating the biochemical microenvironment of singular cells. While conventional methods reliant on boundary effects pose challenges in precisely manipulating individual cells, single-cell capture grounded in the principle of stagnation point flow offers a solution to this limitation. Nevertheless, such capture mechanisms encounter inconsistency due to the instability of the flow field and stagnation point. In this study, a microfluidic device for the stable capture of single cells was designed, integrating the principle of fluid mechanics by amalgamating stagnation point flow and boundary effects. This innovative microfluidic chip transcended the limitations associated with single methodologies, leveraging the strengths of both stagnation point flow and boundary effects to achieve reliable single-cell capture. Notably, the incorporation of capture ports at the stagnation point not only harnessed boundary effects but also enhanced capture efficiency significantly, elevating it from 31.9% to 83.3%, thereby augmenting capture stability. Furthermore, computational simulations demonstrated the efficacy of the capture ports in entrapping particles of varying diameters, including 9 µm, 14 µm, and 18 µm. Experiment validation underscored the capability of this microfluidic system to capture single cells within the chip, maintaining stability even under flow rate perturbations spanning from 60 µL/min to 120 µL/min. Consequently, cells with dimensions between 8 µm and 12 µm can be reliably captured. The designed microfluidic system not only furnishes a straightforward and efficient experimental platform but also holds promise for facilitating deeper investigations into the intricate interplay between individual cells and their surrounding microenvironment.

BACKGROUND: The protocol for delayed-interval delivery of the second twin in twin pregnancies has not been standardized. Cervical cerclage is often performed, but its use is debated. To conduct a scoping review on cervical cerclage for prolonging the intertwin delivery interval and improving second twin survival and maternal outcomes after preterm delivery or spontaneous abortion of the first twin in twin pregnancies. METHODS: Seven Chinese and English language databases were searched from inception to March 1, 2023, including PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP Chinese Science Journal Database, and Sinomed. Relevant observational studies that assessed the effectiveness of the use of cervical cerclage in delayed-interval delivery of twins were screened and selected, and raw data were extracted, and descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis were performed. RESULTS: A total of 102 articles were retrieved. After screening and exclusion of duplicate and irrelevant articles, 22 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were obtained. Studies in which cerclage was performed reported longer intertwin delivery intervals than those that did not perform cerclage, and the difference was statistically significant. The cerclage group also tended to have lower rates of chorioamnionitis and maternal complications, but the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: After excluding patients with contraindications, emergency cervical cerclage can be considered in cases of spontaneous abortion of the first twin in twin pregnancies to prolong the gestation and improve the prognosis of the remaining fetus until it becomes viable and increases its birth weight.
