The relative role of stochasticity versus determinism is critically dependent on the spatial scale over which communities are studied. However, only a few studies have attempted to reveal how spatial scales influence the balance of different assembly processes. In this study, we investigated the latitudinal spatial scale dependences in assembly processes of microeukaryotic communities in surface water and sediment along the continental shelves of China. It was hypothesized that different microeukaryotic trophic groups (i.e., autotroph, heterotroph, mixotroph, and parasite) showed different latitudinal scale dependences in their assembly processes. Our results disclosed that the relative importance of different assembly processes depended on a latitudinal space scale for planktonic microeukaryotes. In surface water, as latitudinal difference increased, the relative contributions of homogenous selection and homogenizing dispersal decreased for the entire community, while those of heterogeneous selection and drift increased. The planktonic autotrophic and heterotrophic groups shifted from stochasticity-dominated processes to heterogeneous selection as latitudinal differences surpassed thresholds of 8° and 16°, respectively. For mixotrophic and parasitic groups, however, the assembly processes were always dominated by drift across different spatial scales. The balance of different assembly processes for the autotrophic group was mainly driven by temperature, whereas that of the heterotrophic group was driven by salinity and geographical distance. In sediment, neither the entire microeukaryotic community nor the four trophic groups showed remarkable spatial scale dependences in assembly processes; they were always overwhelmingly dominated by the drift. This work provides a deeper understanding of the distribution mechanisms of microeukaryotes along the continental shelves of China from the perspective of trophic groups.

Biodiversity loss resulting from environmental pollution is a global concern. While interspecific interactions are central to ecology, the impact of environmental pollution on predator-prey interactions and its ecological consequences, such as extinction and biodiversity loss, remain unclear. To investigate the effects of antibiotic exposure on predation strength and the resulting ecological consequence, the Didinium-Paramecium was utilized as a predator-prey model and exposed to nitrofurazone or erythromycin, two common pollutants, respectively. Initially, we determined prey population growth dynamics, body size, and predator numerical-functional responses. Subsequently, these above parameters were integrated into a mathematical model of predator-prey predation. Then both the long time-series data and phase portraits obtained through model simulation were used to estimate interaction strength and to predict the outcome of predator-prey coexistence. Our results revealed that exposure to either antibiotic significantly reduced prey population growth parameters (e.g., µmax and K) while increasing individual body size. The combined effects of antibiotic exposure and predation pressure on population growth inhibition or body size promotion were variable, mostly additive, with a few cases of synergy and extremely rare antagonism, depending on antibiotic exposure concentration. As antibiotic exposure concentration increased, the predator rmax generally declined, while functional responses varied depending on specific parameters, implying a decrease in predator-prey interaction strength. Analyses of phase portrait features showed that the population oscillation amplitude decreased with increasing antibiotic exposure concentrations, the cycle length of adjacent peaks increased, and prey extinction occurred earlier. In conclusion, antibiotic exposure reduced both predator and prey fitness, underlying the reason antibiotics reduces the strength of predator-prey interaction. Despite the indirect benefits of prey gain from this, the presence of predators can expedite the process of prey extinction caused by antibiotic exposure.

BACKGROUND: Whether the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) dietary recommendations affect the gut microbiota and inflammatory status remains unclear. We examined the association of dietary adherence scores to the WCRF/AICR with gut microbiota and inflammation in a cross-sectional setting. METHODS: The WCRF/AICR diet adherence scores were calculated for 151 participants (adenoma 97, non-adenoma 54) from 7-day dietary records. The gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing of fecal samples. The levels of inflammatory biomarkers in both blood (i.e., IL-6, IL-8, IgA, IgM, and IgG) and fecal samples (i.e., FCP) were evaluated in 97 colorectal adenoma patients who had blood samples available. Multivariable linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the association of individual and total dietary adherence scores with gut microbiota and inflammatory biomarker levels. RESULTS: Participants with higher adherence had lower relative abundance of Proteobacteria (ß = -0.041, 95%CI: -0.073, -0.009), Enterobacteriaceae (ß = -0.035, 95%CI: -0.067, -0.003), and unidentified Enterobacteriaceae at the genus level (ß = -0.029, 95%CI: -0.055, -0.003) compared to those with lower adherence. Plant-based food intake was positively correlated with increased abundance of Phascolarctobacterium (ß = 0.013, 95%CI: 0.001, 0.026). Restricting fast food was linked to high abundance of Bacteroidaceae (ß = 0.149, 95%CI: 0.040, 0.257) and Bacteroides (ß = 0.149, 95%CI: 0.040, 0.257). Limiting sugary drinks was associated with reduced abundance of Lachnospiraceae (ß = -0.155, 95%CI: -0.292, -0.018). Plant-based food intake (ß = -0.251, 95%CI: -0.450, -0.052) and restriction of fast food (ß = -0.226, 95%CI: -0.443, -0.008) were associated with reduced IGG levels in men. Alcohol restriction was linked to lower IL-6 (ß = -7.095, 95%CI: -11.286, -2.903) and IL-8 (ß = -7.965, 95%CI: -14.700, -1.230) levels in women, but with higher IL-6 (ß = 0.918, 95%CI: 0.161, 1.675) levels in men. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the association of adherence to the WCRF/AICR diet with gut microbiota and inflammation. These results need to be validated in additional prospective or interventional studies.

Although predation risk exists under natural conditions, its role is usually ignored when evaluating the ecotoxicity of environmental contaminants, and the interaction between predation risk and antibiotic ecotoxicity is not yet clear. To investigate the nonconsumptive effects (NCEs) of predation on the ecotoxicity evaluation of antibiotics, the median lethal concentration (LC50), relative population growth rate (RGR), and activities of three antioxidases were measured in the ciliate Paramecium jenningsi exposed to graded concentrations of the antibiotics nitrofurazone (NFZ) or erythromycin (ERY) in the presence or absence of a predator, i.e., the ciliate Didinium nasutum. The results showed that (1) NCEs significantly reduced the LC50 of NFZ but had no effect on that of ERY; (2) predation pressure alone had no significant effect on the inhibitory rate of the P. jenningsi population, but the interaction with NFZ was synergistic, while that with CRY was additive; (3) the concentrationresponse (i.e., mortality) model for each antibiotic exposure with and without predation pressure differed significantly in the parameter slope; (4) RGRs were significantly reduced by antibiotic exposure or NCEs; only in NFZ-exposed groups did the RGRs decrease linearly with increasing exposure concentration; and (5) the activities of all three antioxidases significantly increased due to NCEs or following exposure to antibiotics. In brief, NCEs were detected in P. jenningsi, and these had additive or synergistic effects on antibiotic ecotoxicity, but their magnitude depended on the properties and exposure concentrations of the antibiotics. Our findings suggest that it is necessary to consider the roles of NCEs in the ecotoxicity evaluation of environmental contaminants.

Recent studies have revealed a high diversity of pleurostomatid ciliates in brackish habitats. Here, a novel species, Pseudolitonotus spirelis gen. et sp. n., isolated from a mangrove wetland of southern China, was investigated based on living observation, protargol staining, and molecular analyses. The new genus Pseudolitonotus gen. n. is characterized by the last left somatic kinety (LKn) being shortened and none of the right somatic kineties extending to the anterior end of the cell, thus distinguishing it from all known pleurostomatid genera. The type species, Pseudolitonotus spirelis sp. n., is characterized by the possession of two macronuclear nodules, 11-15 right and 7-9 left kineties, a single contractile vacuole subterminally located, extrusomes evenly spaced along the entire ventral margin and some forming an "apical group", two types of cortical granules, and the bottom of the oral slit invariably being twisted. Litonotus gracilis (Pan et al. Eur J Protistol 51:494-506, 2015) is believed to be another member of this new genus as its LKn and right somatic kineties are all shortened. Hence, a new combination, Pseudolitonotus gracilis (Pan et al., 2015) comb. n., is suggested and its diagnosis is improved. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequence data reveal that Pseudolitonotus gen. n. is monophyletic and groups with Apolitonotus (Pan et al. J Eukaryot Microbiol 67:252-262, 2020) of the family Protolitonotidae (Wu et al. Zool Scr 46:245-253, 2017). However, the familial assignment of this new genus is uncertain based on current data.

Current understanding of toxicity mechanisms of nanoparticles is still far from comprehensive, partly because of the neglect of control factors such as the dependence of mechanism activation on the exposure dosage and particle size. To reveal molecular mechanisms of silver nanoparticle (AgNP) toxicity, the model ciliate Paramecium multimicronucleatum was exposed for 12 h to different concentrations of AgNPs with particle size of 20 nm (0.08, 0.12, and 0.30 mg/l) and 40 nm (0.08 and 0.30 mg/l). Transcriptomes of the tested ciliates were then analyzed based on dendrograms of gene expression, Gene Ontology (GO) terms, KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathways, and up- and down-regulated genes. Results showed that: (1) toxicity mechanisms of AgNP revealed by analyses of GO and KEEG were significantly involved in the metabolic pathways of nutrients and the biosynthesis of macromolecules; (2) the top five up-regulated genes were mainly related to biological oxidation, biosynthesis, and oxidative stress, while top five down-regulated genes were mainly related to glycolysis; (3) activated mechanisms varied both in quantity and in type with dosages and particle sizes of AgNPs; (4) AgNP-treatments with different exposure dosages and particle sizes can produce the same toxicity in terms of 12 h-EC50, but the underlying molecular mechanisms differed significantly. In brief, this study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms of AgNP toxicity through transcriptome analyses and confirmed their dependence of activation on the exposure dosage and particle size of AgNPs.

A new ciliate species of the genus Loxophyllum Dujardin, 1841, Loxophyllum paludosum sp. n., is described from a mangrove wetland near Daya Bay in Guangdong Province, southern China, based on morphological and molecular analyses. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: (1) 12-14 right kineties and 4-6 left kineties; (2) two macronuclear nodules and one micronucleus; (3) a single contractile vacuole located terminally; (4) extrusomes bar-shaped, evenly spaced along entire ventral margin, and clustered to form 5-7 warts along dorsal margin; and (5) presence of three ridges on the left side of cell. The new species is divergent from its congeners from 0.4% to 6.7% (5-104 nucleotide sites) based on the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequence data. The validity of the new species is also supported by molecular phylogenetic trees inferred from SSU rRNA gene sequences.

The morphology, infraciliature, and silverline system of two peritrich ciliates, Pseudovorticella littoralis sp. n. and P. alani sp. n., isolated from coastal waters of southern China, were investigated based on both living and silver-stained specimens. Pseudovorticella littoralis sp. n. is characterized by the following combination of characters: cell inverted cone-shaped; contractile vacuole ventral; J-shaped macronucleus; infundibular polykinety 3 with two kinetosome rows of equal length; 19-26 silverlines from peristome to trochal band and 5-14 from trochal band to scopula. Pseudovorticella alani sp. n. is characterized by: cell inverted bell-shaped; contractile vacuole ventral; J-shaped macronucleus recurved almost forming a loop; infundibular polykinety 3 with three kinetosome rows, outer two rows longer than inner one; 48-61 silverlines between peristome and aboral trochal band, and 12-20 between aboral trochal band and scopula. The SSU rDNA sequences of both new species are reported and their genetic distances with congeners and phylogenetic relationships are investigated. Pseudovorticella and Epicarchesium cluster into two subclades with low support values. One subclade contains nearly all the available sequences of Pseudovorticella and Epicarchesium. Another one contains P. monilata and E. pectinatum. This calls on the need of a generic re-classification of Pseudovorticella and Epicarchesium based on more morphological and molecular data.

The biodiversity of peritrich ciliates from brackish biotopes is rarely investigated, especially members of the genus Pseudovorticella. Here, the morphology of three species of Pseudovorticella, i.e. P. cf. vestita (Stokes, 1883) Jankowski, 1976, P. spathulata sp. n., and P. qinghaiensis sp. n. isolated from brackish waters were studied. Pseudovorticella cf. vestita is characterized by inverted bell-shaped cell; a J-shaped macronucleus; a single contractile vacuole ventrally located; P3 three-rowed; pellicle striated with highly developed pellicular vesicles; 18-22 transverse silverlines between peristome and aboral trochal band, and 9-13 between aboral trochal band and scopula. Pseudovorticella spathulata sp. n. differs from its congeners by the following combination of characters: elongate-elliptical cell; a single contractile vacuole near ventral wall of infundibulum; a J-shaped macronucleus; P3 three-rowed; 24-34 silverlines between oral area and aboral trochal band and 6-10 between aboral trochal band and scopula. Pseudovorticella qinghaiensis sp. n. is characterized by: cell with an oval outline; a single contractile vacuole near ventral wall of infundibulum; a C-shaped macronucleus; P3 three-rowed; 30-35 and 9-11 transverse silverlines above and below the trochal band, respectively. The SSU rDNA sequences of five Pseudovorticella species, namely P. annulata, P. monilata, P. parakenti, P. spathulata sp. n., and P. cf. vestita, plus that of Zoothamnium hartwigi, are reported for the first time and their evolutionary relationships are investigated. Five undefined Pseudovorticella forms are considered might be conspecific with P. monilata. Two congeners are conspecific with P. spathulata sp. n. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequences reveal that Pseudovorticella is not monophyletic and Z. hartwigi clusters with its congeners as expected.

Four new species of Vorticella, V. parachiangi sp. n., V. scapiformis sp. n., V. sphaeroidalis sp. n., and V. paralima sp. n., were isolated from coastal brackish waters of southern China. Their morphology, infraciliature, and silverline system were investigated based on observations of specimens both in vivo and following silver staining. Vorticella parachiangi sp. n. is distinguished by: a J-shaped macronucleus; a single dorsally located contractile vacuole; a two-rowed infundibular polykinetid 3, in which row 1 is shorter than row 2; 21-31 silverlines between peristome and aboral trochal band, 6-11 between aboral trochal band and scopula. Vorticella scapiformis sp. n. is characterized by its conspicuously thin and irregularly edged peristomial lip; a J-shaped macronucleus; a single, ventrally located contractile vacuole; row 1 of the infundibular polykinetid 3 proximally shortened; 18-25 silverlines between peristome and aboral trochal band, 8-12 between aboral trochal band and scopula. Vorticella sphaeroidalis sp. n. can be identified by its small, sub-spherical zooid; a C-shaped macronucleus; a ventrally located contractile vacuole; an aboral trochal band adjacent to the scopula; 16-18 silverlines between persitome and aboral trochal band, two between aboral trochal band and scopula. Vorticella paralima sp. n. can be identified by its ovoidal zooid; a J-shaped macronucleus; a dorsally positioned contractile vacuole; rows 1 and 2 of the infundibular polykinetid 3 proximally shortened; 26-35 silverlines from peristome to aboral trochal band, and 7-13 from aboral trochal band to scopula. The SSU rDNA genes of these four species were sequenced and their phylogeny was analyzed.

The application of identical exposure dosages in different species generally leads to a limited understanding of dose-response patterns because of species-specific factors. To evaluate phenol-induced ecotoxicity, antioxidant enzyme activity and population growth dynamics were compared in two model ciliates, the marine species Euplotes vannus and the freshwater species Paramecium multimicronucleatum. Dosage ranges of phenol exposure were based on tolerance limits of test ciliates as determined by their carrying capacity (K) and growth rate (r). When the exposure duration of phenol increased from 48 h to 96 h, the median effective dose (ED50) for P. multimicronucleatum decreased faster than that for E. vannus, and the ratio of the former to the latter declined from 2.75 to 0.30. When E. vannus was exposed to increasing concentrations of phenol (0-140 mg l-1), r rose initially and then dropped significantly at concentrations higher than 40 mg l-1, whereas K decreased linearly over the entire range. For P. multimicronucleatum, both r and K declined gradually over the range 0-200 mg l-1 phenol. Dose-response patterns of activities of three individual antioxidant enzymes, and the integrative index of the three enzymes, presented a biphasic (inverse U-shaped) curve at each of four durations of exposure, i.e. 12 h, 24 h, 36 h and 48 h. Cluster analyses and multidimensional scaling analyses of antioxidant enzyme activities revealed differences in the temporal succession of physiological states between the two model ciliates. In brief, combining ED50 with growth dynamic parameters is helpful for designing exposure dosages of toxicants in ecotoxicity tests.

Understanding dose-responses is crucial for determining the utility of biomarkers in ecotoxicity assessment. Nitrofurazone is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is widely used in the aquaculture industry in China despite its detrimental effects on ecosystems. Potential dose-response models were examined for the effect of nitrofurazone on two antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), in the ciliated protozoan Euplotes vannus. This was achieved by measuring enzyme activity and gene expression profiling of SOD and GPx in ciliate cells exposed to nitrofurazone at doses ranging from 0 to 180mgl-1 for 6h, 12h, 18h and 24h. Dose-response dynamics were characterized by mathematical models. Results showed that: 1) dose-response patterns differed significantly among the tested endpoints, nitrofurazone concentrations and durations of exposure; 2) GPx activity was the best candidate biomarker because of its linear dose-response relationship; 3) SOD activity and mRNA relative expression levels of GPx and SOD are also candidate biomarkers but their dose-responses were non-linear and therefore more difficult to interpret; 4) partitioning the dose-response dynamic model by piecewise function can help to clarify the relationships between biological endpoints. This study demonstrates the utility of dynamic model analysis and the potential of antioxidant enzymes, in particular GPx activity, as a candidate biomarkers for environmental monitoring and risk assessment of nitrofurazone in the aquaculture industry.

Although salinity fluctuation is a prominent characteristic of many coastal ecosystems, its effects on biological adaptation have not yet been fully recognized. To test the salinity fluctuations on biological adaptation, population growth dynamics and Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity were investigated in the euryhaline bacterium Idiomarina sp. DYB, which was acclimated at different salinity exposure levels, exposure times, and shifts in direction of salinity. Results showed: (1) bacterial population growth dynamics and Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity changed significantly in response to salinity fluctuation; (2) patterns of variation in bacterial growth dynamics were related to exposure times, levels of salinity, and shifts in direction of salinity change; (3) significant tradeoffs were detected between growth rate (r) and carrying capacity (K) on the one hand, and Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity on the other; and (4) beneficial acclimation was confirmed in Idiomarina sp. DYB. In brief, this study demonstrated that salinity fluctuation can change the population growth dynamics, Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity, and tradeoffs between r, K, and Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity, thus facilitating bacterial adaption in a changing environment. These findings provide constructive information for determining biological response patterns to environmental change.

Oligotrich ciliates are common marine microplankters, but their biodiversity and evolutionary relationships have not been well-documented. Morphological descriptions and small subunit rRNA gene sequences of two new species representing two new strombidiid genera, Sinistrostrombidium cupiformum gen. nov., sp. nov. and Antestrombidium agathae gen. nov., sp. nov. are presented, and their taxonomy and molecular phylogeny are analyzed. Sinistrostrombidium gen. nov. is characterized by a sinistrally spiraled girdle kinety and a longitudinal ventral kinety. Antestrombidium gen. nov. is distinguished by tripartite somatic kineties (circular and ventral kineties plus dextrally spiraled girdle kinety). Sinistrostrombidium and Antestrombidium branched separately from one another in phylogenetic trees, clustering with different clades of strombidiids. The new genera added to the diversities of ciliary patterns and small subunit rRNA gene sequences in strombidiids leads to presentation of a new hypothesis about evolution of the 12 known strombidiid genera, based on ciliary pattern and partly supported by molecular evidence. In addition, our new morphological and molecular analyses support establishment of a new order Lynnellida ord. nov., characterized by an open adoral zone of membranelles without differentiation of anterior and ventral membranelles, for Lynnella, but we remain unable to assign the genus to a subclass with confidence.

Two new brackish pleurostomatid ciliates, Amphileptus spiculatus sp. n. and A. bellus sp. n. were collected from mangrove wetlands of southern China and their morphology and molecular phylogeny were studied. Amphileptus spiculatus sp. n. can be distinguished from congeners by the presence of 11-14 right and 6-8 left kineties, two macronuclear nodules and a conspicuous beak-like anterior body end. Amphileptus bellus sp. n. is characterized by the presence of 2-4 macronuclear nodules, 31-35 right and 6 or 7 left kineties and two types of extrusomes. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequences data indicate that the family Amphileptidae is paraphyletic.

Haptorian ciliates in the closely similar genera Kentrophyllum and Epiphyllum possess a unique pattern of ciliature and are distinguished from one another only by the presence or absence of cytoplasmic spines projecting from the margin of the cell. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequences of three new samples from coastal habitats in China revealed that species in the two genera clustered together indiscriminately (i.e. forms of neither genus clustered into an independent clade) as a maximally supported, monophyletic clade that branches basally to all other clades in the order Pleurostomatida and is strongly divergent from other members of the family in which the genera have been placed. As a result, we propose that Epiphyllum be synonymized with Kentrophyllum and that a new family Kentrophyllidae fam. n. be established for the genus. We hypothesize that the two-sutures of Kentrophyllum is a plesiomorphy within the Pleurostomatida and the unique peripheral kinety might represent an autapomorphy of Kentrophyllum. In addition, we provide a taxonomic revision of Kentrophyllum including description of three new species (K. bispinum sp. n., K. strumosum sp. n., and K. qingdaoense sp. n.), redescription of K. verrucosum (Stokes, 1893) Petz et al., 1995, and three new combinations (K. soliforme (Fauré-Fremiet, 1908) comb. n., K. hohuensis (Wang and Nie, 1933) comb. n. and K. shenzhenense (Pan et al., 2010) comb. n.). The surface ultrastructure of the genus Kentrophyllum is recorded for the first time. And a key to all known species of Kentrophyllum was also suggested.

The living morphology and infraciliature of seven Dysteria species isolated from the seas around China were investigated by observation of both living cells and specimens after protargol impregnation. Dysteria paraprocera sp. n. is characterized as follows: cell size 110-150×30-40µm in vivo; body elongate rectangular and slender; a yellow-brown to dark red coloured pigment spot located at anterior end of body; three right kineties, with rightmost two extending apically to dorsal margin and innermost one starting at level of cytostome; eight or nine short left kineties at equatorial area. Dysteria nabia, D. proraefrons, D. brasiliensis, D. cristata, D. derouxi and D. crassipes basically correspond well with previous studies and therefore only brief descriptions are presented. Discussions of these species are helpful, however, in understanding the circumscription of Dysteria morphotypes. After careful comparison, Dysteria procera sensu Liu et al. (2008, Acta Hydrobiol. Sin. 32 (suppl.), 84-89 (in Chinese with English abstract)) was verified as a new species, D. subtropica sp. n., mainly because the innermost right kinety starts at mid-body. Small-subunit (SSU) rRNA genes were sequenced for four species of Dysteria, namely, D. paraprocera sp. n., D. subtropica sp. n., D. proraefrons and D. nabia. Sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analyses indicate that these species are well outlined and cluster with their congeners.

Seven marine scuticociliates, Philaster sinensis spec. nov., Pseudocohnilembus hargisi Evans and Thompson, 1964. J. Protozool. 11, 344, Parauronema virginianum Thompson, 1967. J. Protozool. 14, 731, Uronemella filificum (Kahl, 1931. Tierwelt. Dtl. 21, 181) Song and Wilbert, 2002. Zool. Anz. 241, 317, Cohnilembus verminus Kahl, 1931, Parauronema longum Song, 1995. J. Ocean Univ. China. 25, 461 and Glauconema trihymene Thompson, 1966. J. Protozool. 13, 393, collected from Chinese coastal waters, were investigated using live observations, silver impregnation methods, and, in the case of the new species, SSU rDNA sequencing. Philaster sinensis spec. nov. can be recognized by the combination of the following characters: body cylindrical, approximately 130-150 × 35-55 µm in vivo; apical end slightly to distinctly pointed, posterior generally rounded; 19-22 somatic kineties; M1 triangular, consisting of 13 or 14 transverse rows of kinetosomes; M2 comprising 10-12 longitudinal rows; CVP positioned at end of SK1; marine habitat. We also provide improved diagnoses for Pseudocohnilembus hargisi, Parauronema virginianum, Uronemella filificum and Parauronema longum based on their original descriptions as well as the present work. Phylogenetic analyses support the monophyly of the genus Philaster.

Incorporating protozoa into population models (from simple predator-prey explorations to complex food web simulations) is of conceptual, ecological, and economic importance. From theoretical and empirical perspectives, we expose unappreciated complexity in the traditional predator-prey model structure and provide a parsimonious solution, especially for protistologists. We focus on how prey abundance alters two key components of models: predator conversion efficiency (e, the proportion of prey converted to predator, before mortality loss) and predator mortality (δ, the portion of the population lost though death). Using a well-established model system (Paramecium and Didinium), we collect data to parameterize a range of existing and novel population models that differ in the functional forms of e and δ. We then compare model simulations to an empirically obtained time-series of predator-prey population dynamics. The analysis indicates that prey-dependent e and δ should be considered when structuring population models and that both prey and predator biomass also vary with prey abundance. Both of these impact the ability of the model to predict population dynamics and, therefore, should be included in theoretical model evaluations and assessment of ecosystem dynamics associated with biomass flux.
