RESUMO
Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is an emerging tool for monitoring biological communities in aquatic ecosystems. The selection of bioinformatic pipelines significantly impacts the results of biodiversity assessments. However, there is currently no consensus on the appropriate bioinformatic pipelines for fish community analysis in eDNA metabarcoding. In this study, we compared three bioinformatic pipelines (Uparse, DADA2, and UNOISE3) using real and mock (constructed with 15/30 known fish) communities to investigate the differences in biological interpretation during the data analysis process in eDNA metabarcoding. Performance evaluation and diversity analyses revealed that the choice of bioinformatic pipeline could impact the biological results of metabarcoding experiments. Among the three pipelines, the operational taxonomic units (OTU)-based pipeline (Uparse) showed the best performance (sensitivity: 0.6250 ± 0.0166; compositional similarity: 0.4000 ± 0.0571), the highest richness (25-102) and minimal inter-group differences in alpha diversity. It suggested the OTU-based pipeline possessed superior capability in fish diversity monitoring compared to ASV/ZOTU-based pipeline. Additionally, the Bray-Curtis distance matrix achieved the highest discriminative effect in the PCoA (43.3%-53.89%) and inter-group analysis (P < 0.01), indicating it was better at distinguishing compositional differences or specific genera of fish community at different sampling sites than other distance matrices. These findings provide new insights into fish community monitoring through eDNA metabarcoding in estuarine environments.

BACKGROUND: Residential mobility is believed to influence the occurrence and development of cancer; however, the results are inconclusive. Furthermore, limited studies have been conducted on Asian populations. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between residential mobility and liver cancer risk among Chinese women. METHODS: We enrolled 72,818 women from urban Shanghai between 1996 and 2000, and then followed them until the end of 2016. Cox regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the association between residential mobility and liver cancer risk. A linear trend test was conducted by ranking variables. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted, excluding participants with follow-up times of less than 2 years, to prevent potential bias. RESULTS: During the 1,269,765 person-years of follow-up, liver cancer was newly diagnosed in 259 patients. Domestic migration (HR = 1.47, 95% CI, 1.44-1.50), especially immigration to Shanghai (HR = 1.47, 95% CI, 1.44-1.50) was associated with an increased risk of liver cancer. In addition, migration frequency, age at initial migration and first immigration to Shanghai had linear trends with an increased liver cancer risk (Ptrend <0.001). The results were similar when excluding participants with less than two years of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The possible association between residential mobility and a higher risk of liver cancer in women could suggest the need for effective interventions to reduce adverse environmental exposures and enhance people's health.

Skeletal Class III malocclusion is one type of dentofacial deformity that significantly affects patients' facial aesthetics and oral health. The orthodontic treatment of skeletal Class III malocclusion presents challenges due to uncertainties surrounding mandibular growth patterns and treatment outcomes. In recent years, disease-specific radiographic features have garnered interest from researchers in various fields including orthodontics, for their exceptional performance in enhancing diagnostic precision and treatment effect predictability. The aim of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the valuable radiographic features in the diagnosis and management of skeletal Class III malocclusion. Based on the existing literature, a series of analyses on lateral cephalograms have been concluded to identify the significant variables related to facial type classification, growth prediction, and decision-making for tooth extractions and orthognathic surgery in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion. Furthermore, we summarize the parameters regarding the inter-maxillary relationship, as well as different anatomical structures including the maxilla, mandible, craniofacial base, and soft tissues from conventional and machine learning statistical models. Several distinct radiographic features for Class III malocclusion have also been preliminarily observed using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
RESUMO
PURPOSE: The associations between dietary patterns and liver cancer risk have received much attention, but evidence among the Chinese population is scarce. This study aims to update the results of two cohort studies and provide the sex-specific associations in the Chinese population. METHODS: This study was based on two cohorts from the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS) and the Shanghai Women's Health Study (SWHS). Diet information was collected by validated food frequency questionnaires. Dietary patterns were derived by factor analysis. Cox regression model was utilized to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for associations between dietary patterns and liver cancer risk. RESULTS: During median follow-up years of 11.2 (male) and 17.1 (female) years, 427 males and 252 females were identified as incident primary liver cancer cases. In males, vegetable-based dietary pattern was inversely associated with liver cancer (HRQ4-Q1: 0.67, 95%CI 0.51-0.88, Ptrend < 0.001). Interaction analysis indicated that in males lower vegetable-based dietary pattern score and older age/medical history of chronic hepatitis combined increase the hazard of liver cancer more than the sum of them, with a 114% and 1061% higher risk, respectively. In females, the fruit-based dietary pattern was associated with a reduced risk of liver cancer (HRQ4-Q1: 0.63, 95%CI 0.42-0.95, Ptrend = 0.03). In both males and females, null associations were observed between the meat-based dietary pattern and the risk of liver cancer. CONCLUSION: A vegetable-based dietary pattern in males and a fruit-based dietary pattern in females tended to have a protective role on liver cancer risk. This study provided updated information that might be applied to guide public health action for the primary prevention of liver cancer.

BACKGROUND: Previous metabolic profiling of liver cancer has mostly used untargeted metabolomic approaches and was unable to quantitate the absolute concentrations of metabolites. In this study, we examined the association between the concentrations of 186 targeted metabolites and liver cancer risk using prediagnostic plasma samples collected up to 14 years prior to the clinical diagnosis of liver cancer. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study (n = 322 liver cancer cases, n = 322 matched controls) within the Shanghai Men's Health Study. Conditional logistic regression models adjusted for demographics, lifestyle factors, dietary habits, and related medical histories were used to estimate the odds ratios. Restricted cubic spline functions were used to characterise the dose-response relationships between metabolite concentrations and liver cancer risk. FINDINGS: After adjusting for potential confounders and correcting for multiple testing, 28 metabolites were associated with liver cancer risk. Significant non-linear relationships were observed for 22 metabolites. The primary bile acid biosynthesis and phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis were found to be important pathways involved in the aetiology of liver cancer. A metabolic score consisting of 10 metabolites significantly improved the predictive ability of traditional epidemiological risk factors for liver cancer, with an optimism-corrected AUC increased from 0.84 (95% CI: 0.81-0.87) to 0.89 (95% CI: 0.86-0.91). INTERPRETATION: This study characterised the dose-response relationships between metabolites and liver cancer risk, providing insights into the complex metabolic perturbations prior to the clinical diagnosis of liver cancer. The metabolic score may serve as a candidate risk predictor for liver cancer. BACKGROUND: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is highly prevalent in haemodialysis (HD) patients and is associated with an increased risk of death. Roxadustat and recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO, abbreviated as EPO) are the main treatment strategies for renal anaemia in HD patients, but it has not been clear whether there is a difference in their effect on LVH. METHODS: In this multi-centre, prospective, randomized trial of 12-month duration, study participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to the roxadustat group or the EPO group. The doses of both treatment regimens were adjusted so that the patients had a haemoglobin level of 10.0-12.0 g per dL. The primary study endpoint was the change from baseline to 12 months in the left ventricular mass index (LVMI, g/m2) measured by echocardiography. RESULTS: In total, 114 patients were enrolled. The mean age was 50 years, and the median dialysis duration was 33 months. Sixty-one patients were men, and 24 were diabetic. LVMI decreased from 116.18 ± 27.84 to 110.70 ± 25.74 g/m2 in the roxadustat group. However, it increased from 109.35 ± 23.41 to 114.99 ± 28.46 g/m2 in the EPO group, with a significant difference in the change in LVMI between the two groups [-5.48 (-11.60 to 0.65) vs. 5.65 (0.74 to 10.55), p < 0.05]. Changes in left ventricular mass, end-diastolic volume and 6-min walk test seemed superior in the roxadustat group. There were no significant differences in other cardiac geometry, biochemical parameters and major adverse cardiovascular events between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to EPO, roxadustat is more helpful in the regression of LVH in HD patients.

Dietary factors have been extensively investigated as possible risk factors for liver cancer, but the evidence is inconclusive. Our study systematically assessed the association between 142 foods and nutrients and liver cancer risk in a Chinese population using a diet-wide association study. Based on data from 59,844 men in the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS), we assessed the diet intake by dietary questionnaires. Cox regression was used to quantify the association between each food and nutrient and liver cancer risk. A false discovery rate (FDR) of 0.05 was used to select the foods and nutrients for validation. In the cohort, 431 liver cancer cases were identified during 712,373 person-years of follow-up. Retinol (HR per 1 SD increment = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.03-1.14) was associated with a higher risk of liver cancer, whereas onions (HR per 1 SD increment = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.54-0.84) and manganese (HR per 1 SD increment = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.78-0.94) were inversely associated with liver cancer risk. In the replication analysis, estimates for these foods and nutrients were similar in magnitude and direction. Our findings confirm that retinol, onions and manganese were associated with liver cancer risk, which provides reliable evidence between diet and liver cancer development.

Automatic kidney and tumor segmentation from CT volumes is a critical prerequisite/tool for diagnosis and surgical treatment (such as partial nephrectomy). However, it remains a particularly challenging issue as kidneys and tumors often exhibit large-scale variations, irregular shapes, and blurring boundaries. We propose a novel 3-D network to comprehensively tackle these problems; we call it 3DSN-Net. Compared with existing solutions, it has two compelling characteristics. First, with a new scale-aware feature extraction (SAFE) module, the proposed 3DSN-Net is capable of adaptively selecting appropriate receptive fields according to the sizes of targets instead of indiscriminately enlarging them, which is particularly essential for improving the segmentation accuracy of the tumor with large scale variation. Second, we propose a novel yet efficient nonlocal context guidance (NCG) mechanism to capture global dependencies to tackle irregular shapes and blurring boundaries of kidneys and tumors. Instead of directly harnessing a 3-D NCG mechanism, which makes the number of parameters exponentially increase and hence the network difficult to be trained under limited training data, we develop a 2.5D NCG mechanism based on projections of feature cubes, which achieves a tradeoff between segmentation accuracy and network complexity. We extensively evaluate the proposed 3DSN-Net on the famous KiTS dataset with many challenging kidney and tumor cases. Experimental results demonstrate our solution consistently outperforms state-of-the-art 3-D networks after being equipped with scale aware and NCG mechanisms, particularly for tumor segmentation.

OBJECTIVES: Kawasaki disease (KD) is the most common autoimmune vasculitis syndrome in children, which supposed be a complex polygenic disorder. Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is a member of the pro-inflammatory cytokine family, which has a strong pro-inflammatory effect and can participate in various acute and chronic inflammatory responses. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) locus rs3819025 in the IL-17A gene and the susceptibility to KD. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with KD who met the diagnostic criteria (the KD group) and 120 healthy children (the control group) were enrolled retrospectively in this study. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA direct sequencing were used to detect the SNPs of children in the 2 groups. RESULTS: The frequencies of GG, GA, and AA genotypes of rs3819025 locus in the IL-17A gene in the KD group were 82.5%, 17.5%, and 0, respectively, and the frequencies of GG, GA, and AA genotypes in the control group were 72.5%, 22.5%, and 5.0%, respectively. There were significant differences in both genotype (χ2=7.524, P=0.023). The allele frequencies G and A of rs3819025 locus in the KD group were 91.25% and 8.75%, respectively, while those in the control group were 83.75% and 16.25%, respectively. There was significant difference between the 2 groups (χ2=6.171, P=0.013). The distribution frequencies of GG or GA genotype and G or A allele were 88.46% or 11.54% and 94.23% or 5.77% in the KD group with coronary artery lesion, respectively. The distribution frequencies of GG or GA genotype and G or A allele were 78.72% or 21.28% and 89.36% or 10.64% in the KD group without coronary artery lesion, respectively. There were no significant differences in genotype and allele frequencies of rs3819025 between the KD with coronary artery lesion group and the KD group without coronary artery lesion (both P>0.05). Besides, children with the allele A had a 2.023 times higher risk of KD than those without the allele A (χ2=6.171, P=0.013; OR=2.023, 95% CI 1.151 to 3.557). CONCLUSIONS: The locus rs3819025 in the IL-17A gene is associated with the pathogenesis of KD. The allele A of the locus rs3819025 in the IL-17A gene may be a risk factor for KD.

BACKGROUND: Previous findings about the influence of dietary intakes of the branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) on their plasma concentrations have been limited and inconsistent, and evidence from the Chinese population was lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the diet-plasma BCAA correlations in Chinese male and female adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was based on a nested case-control study within 2 prospective population-based cohorts in Shanghai, China. Diet information was collected by the food frequency questionnaires. Plasma BCAA concentrations were measured by ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Spearman correlations and linear regression models were conducted to examine the relationships between dietary BCAA intakes and plasma BCAA. The multivariable model was adjusted for age at the interview, total energy intake, time of blood collection from last meal, dietary patterns, body mass index (in kg/m2), type 2 diabetes, and physical activity. RESULTS: A total of 322 males (median age of 57.0 y) and 187 females (median age of 60.0 y) were included in this cross-sectional study. The geometric means of dietary intake of leucine, isoleucine, valine, and BCAA were 4937.7, 3029.6, 3268.5, and 11237.4 mg/d in males, and 4125.7, 2567.8, 2754.3, and 9449.4 mg/d in females. The geometric means of plasma concentrations of leucine, isoleucine, valine, and BCAA were 181.9, 65.0, 219.8, and 469.4 µM/L in males and 161.6, 61.1, 206.5, and 431.6 µM/L in females. Only leucine (r = 0.1660, P = 0.0028) and total BCAA (r = 0.1348, P = 0.0155) in males exhibited weak positive correlation coefficients. After adjustment for the covariates, leucine, isoleucine, valine, and total BCAA in dietary intakes and plasma were not correlated in both males and females. CONCLUSIONS: In Chinese male and female adults, dietary intakes are not major determinants of plasma concentrations of BCAA, and plasma concentrations might not be reflected by usual dietary intakes of BCAA.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is one of the most common causes of secondary hypertension and is potentially curable. However, a large number of patients still undergo persistent hypertension (PHT) after unilateral adrenal surgery. This research retrospectively studied the factors associated with this clinical difficulty and established a prediction model for the postoperative PHT; Methods: 353 patients from 2014 to 2021 with PA undergoing unilateral adrenal surgery were enrolled in this study. Clinical and biochemical characteristics were reviewed and the associating factors were examined using univariate and multivariate analysis. A nomogram-based prediction model was established correspondingly; results: 46.2% (163/190) of patients had post-surgical PHT. Multivariate analysis suggested that BMI ≥ 25, diabetes, duration of hypertension, male gender, and ARR were independent predictors of PHT after surgery. The prediction model based on the nomogram showed good discrimination ability (the C index of the training group and the validation group were 0.783 and 0.769, respectively), and the calibration curves and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test were good as well. Clinical usefulness was quantified using the decision curve analysis; This nomogram is an integration of the clinical and biochemical data of patients before surgery, and is a reliable tool with high accuracy for predicting the postoperative PHT in patients with PA.

PURPOSE: To assess the levels of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in orthodontic patients both during the suspension of dental services caused by COVID-19 and after a year of dental service reinstatement, and to evaluate the associated factors for OHRQoL in those patients during the suspension period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional online study was conducted both during the suspension of dental service due to COVID-19 (T1) and after a year of dental service reinstatement (T2). The questionnaire - consisting of personal information, subjective complaints, OHIP-14 and oral health conditions - was completed by the participants at T1 and T2. Data were evaluated by the Χ2 test, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: 324 participants were ultimately included in the study sample. The participants reported higher OHIP-14 total scores at T1 than T2 (p < 0.001). Statistically significant differences were detected in the domains psychological discomfort, psychological disability, social disability and handicap (p < 0.001). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that wearing fixed appliances, being over 18 years old, having delayed orthodontic treatment and poor oral hygiene habits were statistically significantly associated with higher OHIP-14 total scores at T1 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The OHRQoL in orthodontic patients was negatively impacted by the suspension of dental services during COVID-19, which was reflected in all the psychosocial domains. Types of appliances, ages, delays in follow-up visits and oral hygiene habits seemed to be the factors associated with OHRQoL in orthodontic patients during the suspension.

Environmental pollution has become an issue of increasing concern in China, owing to the country's rapid economic development. Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is known to be an important parameter in air quality monitoring; further, bioaerosol forms a crucial component of PM. As the climatic environments in the north and south of Xinjiang, China, are significantly different, here, atmospheric PM samples collected from three cities, Shihezi, Yining, and Tumushuk, located in different directions, were analysed for a better understanding of the spatial distribution patterns of microbial community composition of Xinjiang. The16s rDNA and 18 s rDNA were used to locate bacteria and fungi in PM2.5, PM10, and total suspended particulate matter (TSP) at the species level and genus level, and the microbial communities with the top 15 abundances were selected for analysis. The reports indicate that the most abundant group in Shihezi and Yining was Cenchrus_americanus, which belongs to Proteobacteria. The remaining 14 dominant species had their own distribution pattern in each city. The most dominant strain in Tumushuk was Bacillus_taeanensis, but this strain was not detected in Yining and Shihezi. Similarly, the most predominant fungus in Tumushuk (Microdorylaimus_miser under Myriophyllum) was not detected in the other two cities. The analysis of the effect of environmental impact factors on bacteria and fungi revealed that the impact factors such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed had a greater effect on microorganisms, while O3 had a negative correlation with most microorganisms, owing to its toxicity. Overall, the results of this study show that short-range transported air masses have a greater impact on local pollutants and microorganisms.

Prospective epidemiological studies have provided limited evidence for an association between tea consumption and liver cancer risk. Based on a population-based prospective cohort study in middle-aged Chinese women, we investigated the association between tea consumption and the risk of primary liver cancer. Detailed information on tea drinking habits and other potential confounders was obtained at the baseline interview. Incident liver cancer cases were identified through record linkage with the population-based cancer registry and verified through home visits and review of medical charts by medical experts. Multiple aspects of tea drinking habits including starting age, duration, intensity and cumulative consumption of any type of tea and green tea were considered. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from the Cox regression models. After a median follow-up time of 18.12 (interquartile range = 1.59) years, 253 incident liver cancer cases were identified from 71 841 cohort members. Compared with never tea drinkers, the risk of liver cancer for participants who have consumed over 30 kg of dried tea leaves cumulatively was 0.56 (95% CI: 0.32-0.97). For those who drank green tea only, the aHR was 0.54 (95% CI: 0.30-0.98). This updated study suggested an inverse association between cumulative consumption of tea, especially green tea and the risk of primary liver cancer.

Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis of unknown etiology. The rs8108402 C/T single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is located in the promoter region of miR-181-c/d gene and the intron of Nanos3 gene. The miR-181 family contributes to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular and inflammatory disorders, while Nanos3 is involved in DNA transcription regulation and cell proliferation. However, no studies have examined the association between miR-181c/d and Nanos3 polymorphisms and the susceptibility and progression of KD. Objective: The purpose of our study is to examine the association of miR-181c/miR-181d/Nanos3 gene locus rs8108402 C/T polymorphism with KD susceptibility, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) responsiveness, and the development of coronary artery lesions (CAL). Methods: Peripheral blood specimens from 100 children with KD and 100 healthy children were collected. The polymorphism of rs8108402 C/T was detected using polymerase chain reaction-sequencing-based typing technique. Results: There were statistically significant differences in C and T allele frequency distributions between the KD group and healthy controls for the polymorphic site rs8108402 C/T (P = 0.002). The distribution of the genotypes CC, CT, and TT also presented statistical significant difference between the KD and control groups (P = 0.003). Compared to the rs8108402 C allele, the T allele was associated with increased KD susceptibility (OR = 2.080, 95% CI = 1.317â¼3.283). However, there were no significant associations discovered between the rs8108402 C/T polymorphism and CAL formation or IVIG unresponsiveness in the study. Conclusion: SNP rs8108402 C/T located in the miR-181c/d promoter and Nanos3 intronic region is associated with susceptibility to Kawasaki disease but not with the development of coronary artery lesions or IVIG unresponsiveness in Chinese children.
RESUMO
Background: In China, there has never been a comprehensive analysis of lung cancer-associated genetic mutations focused on ethnic minorities in the southwestern region. Our study aimed to provide valuable information on lung cancer-associated genetic alterations for cancer diagnosis and treatment, especially in ethnic minorities. Methods: Retrospective data acquisition was conducted spanning 3 years (2016.01-2019.06) among all patients who were diagnosed with lung cancer at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University Hospital. A total of 5,167 patients including 373 ethnic minorities were included in this study. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to eliminate the bias between Han and other ethnic minorities, including gender, age, smoking history, metastasis status, clinical stage, histological type, sample type, region, and Xuanwei origin. All tests were two-tailed, and significance was defined as P less than 0.05. Results: In terms of the prevalence of EGFR, EGFR L858R, EGFR T790M, ROS1, RET, MET, BRAF, and ERBB2 mutations, there was no significant difference among ethnic groups in Yunnan Province (P>0.05). A higher proportion of EGFR 19 deletion was observed in Hui patients with lung cancer compared with patients of other ethnicities in Yunnan (P=0.048). The prevalence of KRAS mutations was higher in Hani (17.65%, 3/17) and Han patients (11.44%, 80/699) than that in other Yunnan ethnicities (6.04%, 9/149; P=0.07). In Hui patients, ALK fusion was correlated with a history of non-smoking and male gender. In Bai patients, BRAF mutation was also correlated with a history of non-smoking. In all ethnic groups, EGFR mutation was more frequent in women. Conclusions: This study is the first in-depth large case-control study on genetic mutation profiles among multi-ethnic patients in southwestern China, especially focused on ethnic minorities in this area. Our study may facilitate the understanding of the etiology of this malignant disease and consequently help to reduce the incidence of lung cancer in Yunnan ethnic minority areas.
RESUMO
Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are a kind of hazardous substance that exist stably in the atmosphere for a long time. EPFRs combined with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can enter the human respiratory tract through respiration, causing oxidative stress and DNA damage, and they are also closely related to lung cancer. In this study, the inhalation risk for EPFRs in PM2.5 and factors influencing this risk were assessed using the equivalent number of cigarette tar EPFRs. The daily inhalation exposure for EPFRs in PM2.5 was estimated to be equivalent to 0.66-8.40 cigarette tar EPFRs per day. The concentration level and species characteristics were investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The concentration of EPFRs in the study ranged from 1.353-4.653 × 1013 spins/g, and the types of EPFRs were mainly oxygen- or carbon-centered semiquinone-type radicals. Our study showed that there is a strong correlation between the concentrations of EPFRs and conventional pollutants, except for sulfur dioxide. The major factors influencing EPFR concentration in the atmosphere were temperature and wind speed; the higher the temperature and wind speed, the lower the concentration of EPFRs. The findings of this study provide an important basis for further research on the formation mechanism and health effects of EPFRs.
RESUMO
Digestive tract cancers are the common cause of cancer deaths in both China and worldwide. This study aimed to describe the burden, recent trends and lifetime risks in the incidence and mortality of digestive tract cancers in an urban district of Shanghai, China. Our study extracted data on stomach, colon, rectum and liver cancers diagnosed in Changning District between 2010 and 2019 from the Shanghai Cancer Registry. We calculated age-standardized incidence and mortality rates, the risks of developing and dying from cancer, and the estimated annual percent changes. Between 2010 and 2019, 8619 new cases and 5775 deaths were registered with digestive tract cancers in the district. The age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) of liver cancer decreased steadily, whereas the ASIRs of stomach, colon and rectum cancers remained stable from 2010 to 2019. The age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) of stomach and liver cancers showed significant declining changes from 2010 to 2019 in both sexes, but that of colon and rectum cancers remained stable during the entire period. The risks of developing and dying from digestive tract cancers were substantially higher in men than women. The burden of digestive tract cancer and its disparities between sex and age group remain major public health challenges in urban Shanghai. To reduce the burden of digestive tract cancers, the government and researchers should develop and promote a healthy diet, organize a screening, and reduce the prevalence of smoking, alcohol drinking, and hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infections.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study is aimed at (I) assessment of tooth loss and related parameters after jaw curettage of benign lesions and (II) assessment of the outcome of jaw curettage supported by splint insertion after at least six months of follow-up. Material and Methods. For (I), patients who had jaw curettage surgery in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University (Guangzhou, China) from July 2015 to June 2019 were included. For part (II), consecutive patients who came to the department from July to December 2019 that were additionally treated with dental splinting were involved in this study. Based on the patient records, age, gender, initial tooth mobility, follow-up outcome, and potential tooth loss (intra- or postoperatively) were recorded. Based on available radiographs, alveolar crest bone loss and root surface area supported by bone (RSA) were determined. RESULTS: (I) 128 patients with 305 teeth were included, of which 40 teeth were lost (success rate 86.9%), without statistical difference in gender, age, or tooth type (P > 0.05). Tooth mobility, RSA, and the presence of alveolar crest bone defects were associated to tooth loss (P < 0.001). (II) 17 patients with a medium follow-up period of 11 months (range 9 to 13 months) were enrolled. All lesion-involving teeth supported by splint treatment at risks of loss were preserved, showing an effective tooth retention rate in 17/17 cases (74/74 teeth, success rate: 100%). CONCLUSIONS: Tooth mobility and bone loss (lesion-related and/or periodontal) are potential risk predictors for tooth loss in the first year after jaw curettage surgery. Dental splints could be recommendable for teeth involved by jaw benign lesions with little bone support.

BACKGROUND: Based on a prospective cohort study in middle-aged Chinese men, the current study characterized the dose-response relationships between fat distribution measurements and the incidence of primary liver cancer. METHODS: Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by Cox regression models for the association between waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), and body roundness index (BRI) with liver cancer incidence. Dose-response curves were characterized using a restricted cubic spline function. RESULTS: After a mean follow-up time of 11.9 (SD = 2.4) years, 440 liver cancer cases were identified from 60,625 participants. WC, WHtR, ABSI, and BRI were found to be associated with an increased risk of liver cancer at a given level of body mass index (BMI), with multivariable-adjusted HRs of 1.19 (95% CI: 1.01-1.41), 1.26 (95% CI: 1.02-1.50), 1.12 (95% CI: 1.05-1.23) and 1.28 (95% CI: 1.08-1.53) for per SD increment, respectively. Dose-response curves suggested that the risk increased rapidly above the median levels of WC, WHtR, and BRI. For ABSI, the risk decreased from the minimum level to about the 35th percentile and increased slowly thereafter. CONCLUSIONS: The current study suggested an association between abdominal obesity in middle age and increased risk of primary liver cancer at a given level of BMI. WHtR and BRI were better predictors of liver cancer risk compared with WC and ABSI.
