RESUMO

EGFR mutations are a major prognostic factor in lung adenocarcinoma. However, current detection methods require sufficient samples and are costly. Deep learning is promising for mutation prediction in histopathological image analysis but has limitations in that it does not sufficiently reflect tumor heterogeneity and lacks interpretability. In this study, we developed a deep learning model to predict the presence of EGFR mutations by analyzing histopathological patterns in whole slide images (WSIs). We also introduced the EGFR mutation prevalence (EMP) score, which quantifies EGFR prevalence in WSIs based on patch-level predictions, and evaluated its interpretability and utility. Our model estimates the probability of EGFR prevalence in each patch by partitioning the WSI based on multiple-instance learning and predicts the presence of EGFR mutations at the slide level. We utilized a patch-masking scheduler training strategy to enable the model to learn various histopathological patterns of EGFR. This study included 868 WSI samples from lung adenocarcinoma patients collected from three medical institutions: Hallym University Medical Center, Inha University Hospital, and Chungnam National University Hospital. For the test dataset, 197 WSIs were collected from Ajou University Medical Center to evaluate the presence of EGFR mutations. Our model demonstrated prediction performance with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.7680 (0.7607-0.7720) and an area under the precision-recall curve of 0.8391 (0.8326-0.8430). The EMP score showed Spearman correlation coefficients of 0.4705 (p = 0.0087) for p.L858R and 0.5918 (p = 0.0037) for exon 19 deletions in 64 samples subjected to next-generation sequencing analysis. Additionally, high EMP scores were associated with papillary and acinar patterns (p = 0.0038 and p = 0.0255, respectively), whereas low EMP scores were associated with solid patterns (p = 0.0001). These results validate the reliability of our model and suggest that it can provide crucial information for rapid screening and treatment plans.

BACKGROUND: Early-stage lung cancers detected by low-dose computed tomography (CT) often require confirmation through invasive procedures due to the absence of endobronchial lesions. This study assesses the diagnostic utility of bronchial washing fluid (BW) sequencing, a less invasive alternative, aiming to identify patient characteristics most suited for this approach. METHODS: From June 2017 to March 2018, we conducted a prospective cohort study by enrolling patients with incidental lung lesions suspected of early-stage lung cancer at two independent hospitals, and 114 were diagnosed with lung cancer while 50 were diagnosed with benign lesions. BW sequencing was performed using a targeted gene panel, and the clinical characteristics of patients detected with cancer through sequencing were identified. RESULTS: Malignant cells were detected in 33 patients (28.9 %) through BW cytology. By applying specificity-focused mutation criteria, BW sequencing classified 42 patients (36.8 %) as having cancer. Among the cancer patients who were BW sequencing positive and BW cytology negative, 15 patients (75.0 %) showed necrosis on CT. The sensitivity of BW sequencing was particularly enhanced in patients with necrotic tumors, reaching 75 %. CONCLUSIONS: BW sequencing presents a viable, non-invasive diagnostic option for early-stage lung cancer, especially valuable in patients with necrotic lesions. By potentially reducing the reliance on more invasive diagnostic procedures, this method could streamline clinical workflows, decrease patient burden, and improve overall diagnostic efficiency.

BACKGROUND: The mitochondria are essential organelles not only providing cellular energy in the form of ATP, but also regulating the inflammatory response and the cell death program. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been associated with various human diseases, including metabolic syndromes as well as inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an acute pulmonary disorder characterized by uncontrolled alveolar inflammation, apoptotic lung epithelial/endothelial cells, and pulmonary edema. Despite the high mortality of ARDS, an effective pharmacotherapy to treat this disease has not been established yet. Therefore, identifying a novel targeted therapy for ARDS is important. Recently, exogenous mitochondrial transplantation was reported to be beneficial for treating mitochondrial dysfunction. The current study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of mitochondrial transplantation on ARDS in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Mitochondria were isolated from human stem cells. For in vitro efficacy of mitochondrial transplantation on the inflammation and cell death, murine alveolar macrophages MH-S and human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells HPMECs were exposed to LPS, respectively. The ARDS mice model established by a single intratracheal instillation of LPS was used for in vivo efficacy of intravenously treated mitochondria. RESULTS: Our results showed that the mitochondria isolated from human stem cells exhibited an anti-inflammatory effect against alveolar macrophages and an anti-apoptotic effect against the alveolar epithelial cells. Furthermore, intravenous mitochondrial treatment was associated with the attenuation of lung injury in the LPS-induced ARDS mice. CONCLUSION: Dual effects of mitochondria on anti-inflammation and anti-apoptosis support the potential of mitochondrial transplantation as a novel therapeutic strategy for ARDS.

Non-paddy cropping systems play a significant role in food production. However, excessive nitrogen loss from non-paddy soils through nitrate leaching and ammonia volatilization poses a significant challenge to environmental sustainability. In this study, microcosm and field-scale experiments were conducted to explore the potential for using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to mitigate nitrogen loss and greenhouse gas emissions, aiming at filling gaps in knowledge regarding the underlying biochemical mechanisms. The results show that input of micromolar H2O2 from either artificial addition or natural rainwater into soils in the presence of magnetite (Fe3O4) could trigger Fenton-like reaction, which inhibited microbially mediated nitrification of soil-borne ammonium but did not affect the growth of the test crop plant (water spinach). In the absence of Fe3O4, input of rainwater-borne H2O2 into non-paddy soils caused reduction in the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). There was a trend showing that the degree of reduction in N2O and CO2 fluxes increased with increasing concentration of rainwater-borne H2O2. It was likely that microbially mediated reduction of iron oxides took place during rainfall events, providing Fe(II) that is needed for reaction with rainwater-borne H2O2, triggering Fenton-like reaction to inhibit the soil microbes that mediate production of N2O and CO2 in the soils. The findings obtained from this study have implications for developing strategies to manage soil­nitrogen to minimize its environmental impacts.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a nasal disorder characterized by the simultaneous manifestation of at least 2 out of 4 possible symptoms: rhinorrhea, nasal itching, nasal pruritus, and sneezing. Presently, among Chinese young adults from Singapore, we characterised AR phenotypes, established Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS) baselines, and examined the management of AR. Methods: Participants completed an investigator-administered International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire and underwent a skin prick test (SPT). Individuals exhibiting sensitization during the SPT while having at least 2 rhinitis symptoms were identified as AR cases, then categorized into Allergic Rhinitis in Asthma (ARIA) classifications. Results: There were 9323 subjects analyzed. AR prevalence was estimated at 35.4%. Rhinorrhea was perceived as the most severe (mean Nasal Symptom Score (mNSS) ± SD: 1.42 ± 0.74), while nasal pruritus was the least severe (mNSS ± SD: 1.24 ± 0.68). Among moderate-severe AR (68.1%), most were affected by either troublesome symptoms (27.7%) or sleep disturbances (18.4%). By ARIA classes, 26.6% were mild intermittent, 5.4% were mild persistent, 50.3% were moderate-severe intermittent, and 17.6% were moderate-severe persistent. The mean TNSS (mTNSS) of AR cases was 4.43 (SD = 2.49) and between AR classifications, the mTNSS was significantly different. Notably, a large proportion of AR cases remained undiagnosed (85.2%), untreated (72.5%), or both (65.4%); 19.8% self-medicated for AR. Conclusions: There was a significant difference in TNSS of the AR phenotypes, and among phenotypes with a higher mTNSS, a large proportion remained untreated, undiagnosed, or both. The evidence indicates an existing burden of AR among Chinese young adults in Singapore which is notably undermanaged.

As the regenerative mechanisms of biological organisms, self-healing provides useful functions for soft electronics or associated systems. However, there have been few examples of soft electronics where all components have self-healing properties while also ensuring compatibility between components to achieve multifunctional and resilient bio-integrated electronics. Here, we introduce a stretchable, biodegradable, self-healing conductor constructed by combination of two layers: (i) synthetic self-healing elastomer and (ii) self-healing conductive composite with additives. Abundant dynamic disulfide and hydrogen bonds of the elastomer and conductive composite enable rapid and complete recovery of electrical conductivity (~1000 siemens per centimeter) and stretchability (~500%) in response to repetitive damages, and chemical interactions of interpenetrated polymer chains of these components facilitate robust adhesion strength, even under extreme mechanical stress. System-level demonstration of soft, self-healing electronics with diagnostic/therapeutic functions for the urinary bladder validates the possibility for versatile, practical uses in biomedical research areas.

BACKGROUND: Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is defined as the presence of slow gait-speed and subjective cognitive decline in older individuals without mobility disability or dementia. While some studies suggest that MCR is a pre-dementia syndrome and may help predict the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, not all studies concur. The objective of this study is to comprehensively summarize and synthesize evidence to assess the association between MCR and cognitive impairment and dementia. METHODS: Following a pre-specified protocol, two authors systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and The Cochrane Library from inception to 19 August 2024 for observational or randomized studies pertaining to the association between MCR and cognitive impairment and dementia. We favoured maximally adjusted hazards and odds ratios to determine the longitudinal and cross-sectional risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. We investigated for potential sources of heterogeneity and also conducted sensitivity and subgroup analyses by continent and the type of cognitive outcome. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework. RESULTS: We included 20 studies comprising a combined cohort of 1206,782 participants, of which 17 studies were included in the quantitative analysis. The pooled analysis outlined that individuals with MCR exhibited 2.20-fold higher risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, compared to controls (RR=2.20; 95 %CI=1.91-2.53). These findings remained robust across all subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses and assessments of publication bias. CONCLUSION: MCR may be considered a predictive factor for long-term cognitive impairment and dementia. This should be taken into consideration when clinically evaluating the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia but further research is required to lend greater clarity to this association.

A 57-year-old female presented with chest discomfort and exertional dyspnea but no other respiratory symptoms or history of malignancy. Chest CT revealed multifocal centrilobular nodules with ground-glass opacity in both lungs. Thoracoscopic wedge resection was done, and histological examination confirmed interstitial meningothelial-like nodules, consistent with diffuse meningotheliomatosis. The patient was discharged without complications and showed no disease progression on follow-up CT at 3 months, maintaining stability during 6 months of outpatient observation. Diffuse pulmonary meningotheliomatosis is an exceedingly rare condition, but this may be one of the causative etiologies in patients with diffuse bilateral pulmonary nodules.

BACKGROUND: Global food loss and waste have raised environmental concerns regarding the generation of greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide and methane gas), which directly contribute to climate change. To address these concerns, the present research aims to upcycle food waste into an alternative culture medium for the cultivation of microalgae. Various parameters including pretreatment of food waste (i.e., autoclave and non-autoclave), concentration of food waste culture medium (i.e., 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90% and 100%), harvesting efficiency and biochemical compounds of Chlorella sp. microalgae were carried out. RESULTS: Based on the preliminary findings, the highest biomass concentration obtained from 10% food waste culture medium in the autoclave for Chlorella sp., including strains FSP-E, ESP-31 and CY-1, were 2.869 ± 0.022, 2.385 ± 0.018 and 0.985 ± 0.0026 g L-1, respectively. Since Chlorella vulgaris FSP-E exhibited the highest biomass concentration, this microalgal strain was selected to examine the subsequent parameters. Cultivation of C. vulgaris FSP-E in 100FW achieves a biomass concentration of 4.465 ± 0.008 g L-1 with biochemical compounds of 6.94 ± 1.396, 248.24 ± 0.976 and 406.23 ± 0.593 mg g-1 for lipids, carbohydrates and proteins, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study shows that using food waste as an alternative culture medium for C. vulgaris FSP-E can achieve substantial biomass productivity and biochemical content. This research work would contribute to the concept of net zero emission and transitioning toward a circular bioeconomy by upcycling food waste as an alternative culture medium for the cultivation of microalgae. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

PURPOSE: This study proposed a three-dimensional (3D) multi-modal learning-based model for the automated prediction and classification of lymph node metastasis in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using computed tomography (CT) images and clinical information. METHODS: We utilized clinical information and CT image data from 4239 patients with NSCLC across multiple institutions. Four deep learning algorithm-based multi-modal models were constructed and evaluated for lymph node classification. To further enhance classification performance, a soft-voting ensemble technique was applied to integrate the outcomes of multiple multi-modal models. RESULTS: A comparison of the classification performance revealed that the multi-modal model, which integrated CT images and clinical information, outperformed the single-modal models. Among the four multi-modal models, the Xception model demonstrated the highest classification performance, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.756 for the internal test dataset and 0.736 for the external validation dataset. The ensemble model (SEResNet50_DenseNet121_Xception) exhibited even better performance, with an AUC of 0.762 for the internal test dataset and 0.751 for the external validation dataset, surpassing the multi-modal model's performance. CONCLUSIONS: Integrating CT images and clinical information improved the performance of the lymph node metastasis prediction models in patients with NSCLC. The proposed 3D multi-modal lymph node prediction model can serve as an auxiliary tool for evaluating lymph node metastasis in patients with non-pretreated NSCLC, aiding in patient screening and treatment planning.

Contamination of rice by arsenic represents a significant human health risk. Roxarsone -bearing poultry manure is a major pollution source of arsenic to paddy soils. A mesocosm experiment plus a laboratory experiment was conducted to reveal the role of rainwater-borne H2O2 in the degradation of roxarsone in paddy rice soils. While roxarsone could be degraded via chemical oxidation by Fenton reaction-derived hydroxyl radical, microbially mediated decomposition was the major mechanism. The input of H2O2 into the paddy soils created a higher redox potential, which favored certain roxarsone-degrading and As(III)-oxidizing bacterial strains and disfavored certain As(V)-reducing bacterial strains. This was likely to be responsible for the enhanced roxarsone degradation and transformation of As(III) to As(V). Fenton-like reaction also tended to enhance the formation of Fe plaque on the root surface, which acted as a filter to retain As. The dominance of As(V) in porewater, combined with the filtering effect of Fe plaque significantly reduced the uptake of inorganic As by the rice plants and consequently its accumulation in the rice grains. The findings have implications for developing management strategies to minimize the negative impacts from the application of roxarsone-containing manure for fertilization of paddy rice soils.

Devising of materials that afforded dual applicability in decontamination and pollutant detection were still a towering challenge owing to the increasing flux of discharge toxic contaminants over the years. Herein, the NiFe2O4 nanoparticles-loaded on cube-like SrTiO3 (NiFe2O4/SrTiO3) composite was fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal approach providing remarkable photocatalytic treatment and electrochemical sensing of noxious pollutants in wastewater. The material traits of the fabricated composite were scrutinized by myriad characterization approaches. The NiFe2O4/SrTiO3 hybrid material demonstrated high surface area of 19.81 m2/g, adequate band gap energy of 2.75 eV, and prominent photoluminescence characteristics. In the presence of visible light, the NiFe2O4/SrTiO3 exhibited profound photocatalysis capability to eliminate sewage effluent-bearing chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTCH) with 88.6% COD removal in 120 min, outperforming other pure materials. Meanwhile, the toxicity examination of effluent, the possible degradation pathway of CTCH and the proposed photocatalysis mechanism were also divulged. More importantly, the glassy carbon electrode was modified with synergized NiFe2O4/SrTiO3 (NiFe2O4/SrTiO3-GCE) was adopted for the precise quantification of Hydrazine (Hz). The NiFe2O4/SrTiO3-GCE obeyed first-order response for the Hz detection within the range of 1-10 mM: cyclic voltametric: limit of detection (LOD) of 0.119 µM with sensitivity of 18.9 µA µM-1 cm-2, and linear sweep voltametric: LOD of 0.222 µM with a sensitivity of 12.05 µA µM-1 cm-2. The stability and interference of modified electrode were also inspected. This work furnished valuable insights to yield a composite with the prominent S-scheme heterojunction system for quenching of charge carrier recombination and consequently contributing to the future realization into the domains of environmental clean-up and toxic chemical detection.

Evaluating dietary guidelines using diet quality (DQ) offers valuable insights into the healthfulness of a population's diet. We conducted a forensic analysis using DQ metrics to compare the Malaysian Dietary Guidelines (MDG-2020) with its former version (MDG-2010) in relation to cardiometabolic risk (CMR) for an adult Malaysian population. A DQ analysis of cross-sectional data from the Malaysia Lipid Study (MLS) cohort (n = 577, age: 20-65yrs) was performed using the healthy eating index-2015 (HEI-2015) framework in conformation with MDG-2020 (MHEI2020) and MDG-2010 (MHEI2010). Of 13 dietary components, recommended servings for whole grain, refined grain, beans and legumes, total protein, and dairy differed between MDGs. DQ score associations with CMR, dietary patterns and sociodemographic factors were examined. Out of 100, total DQ scores of MLS participants were 'poor' for both MHEI2020 (37.1 ± 10.3) and MHEI2010 (39.1 ± 10.4), especially among young adults, males, Malays, and those frequently 'eating out' as well as those with greatest adherence to Sugar-Sweetened Beverages pattern and lowest adherence to Food Plant pattern. Both metrics shared similar correlations with CMR markers, with MHEI2020 exhibiting stronger correlations with WC, BF%, TG, insulin, HOMA2-IR, and smallLDL than MHEI2010, primarily attributed to reduced refined grain serving. Notably, participants with the highest adherence to MHEI2020 scores exhibited significantly reduced odds for elevated TG (AOR 0.44, 95% CI 0.21-0.93, p = 0.030), HOMA2-IR (AOR 0.44, 95% CI 0.21-0.88, p = 0.022), and hsCRP (AOR 0.54, 95% CI 0.31-0.96, p = 0.040, compared to those with the lowest adherence. Each 5-unit increase in MHEI2020 scores reduced odds for elevated BMI (- 14%), WC (- 9%), LDL-C (- 32%), TG (- 15%), HOMA2-IR (- 9%) and hsCRP (- 12%). While MHEI2020 scores demonstrated better calibration with CMR indicators, the overall sub-optimally 'poor' DQ scores of this population call for health promotion activities to target the public to achieve adequate intake of healthful fruits, non-starchy vegetables and whole grain, and moderate intake of refined grain, added sugar and saturated fat.

Driven by the need for solutions to address the global issue of waste accumulation from human activities and industries, this study investigates the thermal behaviors of empty fruit bunch (EFB), tyre waste (TW), and their blends during co-pyrolysis, exploring a potential method to convert waste into useable products. The kinetics mechanism and thermodynamics properties of EFB and TW co-pyrolysis were analysed through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The rate of mass loss for the blend of EFB:TW at a 1:3 mass ratio shows an increase of around 20% due to synergism. However, the blend's average activation energy is higher (298.64 kJ/mol) when compared with single feedstock pyrolysis (EFB = 257.29 kJ/mol and TW = 252.92 kJ/mol). The combination of EFB:TW at a 3:1 ratio does not result in synergistic effects on mass loss. However, a lower activation energy is reported, indicating the decomposition process can be initiated at a lower energy requirement. The reaction model that best describes the pyrolysis of EFB, TW and their blends can be categorised into the diffusion and power model categories. An equal mixture of EFB and TW was the preferred combination for co-management because of the synergistic effect, which significantly impacts the co-pyrolysis process. The mass loss rate experiences an inhibitive effect at an earlier stage (320 °C), followed by a promotional impact at the later stage (380 °C). The activation energy needed for a balanced mixture is the least compared to all tested feedstocks, even lower than the pyrolysis of a single feedstock. The study revealed the potential for increasing decomposition rates using lower energy input through the co-pyrolysis of both feedstocks. These findings evidenced that co-pyrolysis is a promising waste management and valorisation pathway to deal with overwhelming waste accumulation. Future works can be conducted at a larger scale to affirm the feasibility of EFB and TW co-management.

Background & Objective: Numerous evidence has attributed diets with a high fatty acids (FAs) intake to be associated with atopic dermatitis (AD) development. Therefore, this study investigated the association between intake frequencies of five dietary FAs and AD exacerbations among young Chinese adults from Singapore and Malaysia. Methods: A validated International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire was investigator-administered to 13,561 subjects to collect information on socioeconomic, anthropometric, dietary and lifestyles habits, and personal/family medical histories. Six novel dietary indices were derived to analyse the associations between total FAs, trans fatty acids (TFAs), saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acids, and alpha-linolenic acids in diets and AD exacerbation. Synergy factor (SF) analysis was used to identify interactions between the dietary FAs to influence disease susceptibility. Results: In our multivariable model adjusted for age, gender, BMI, parental eczema, and lifestyle factors, a diet high in total estimated FAs was strongly associated with AD (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR): 1.227; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.054-1.429; adjusted p-value <0.01). Particularly, high estimated total TFAs and SFAs were significantly associated with AD exacerbations including chronic and current moderate-to-severe AD. The association between TFAs and AD remained strong even controlled for the total FAs in diets and false discovery rate corrected (AOR: 1.516; 95% CI: 1.094-2.097; adjusted p-value <0.05). Similarly, having a high SFAs in diets was associated with AD (AOR: 1.581; 95% CI: 1.106-2.256; adjusted p-value <0.05) independently on the total FAs in diets. FAs in diets do not interact to influence AD. Conclusion: Overall, these results highlighted an association between high dietary TFAs and SFAs and AD exacerbations in an Asian population.

The INDUCER OF CBF EXPRESSION 1/C-REPEAT BINDING FACTOR (ICE1/CBF) pathway plays a crucial role in plant responses to cold stress, impacting growth and development. Here, we demonstrated that ATBS1-INTERACTING FACTOR 2 (AIF2), a non-DNA-binding basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, positively regulates freezing tolerance through the ICE1/CBF-induced cold tolerance pathway in Arabidopsis. Cold stress transcriptionally upregulated AIF2 expression and induced AIF2 phosphorylation, thereby stabilizing the AIF2 protein during early stages of cold acclimation. The AIF2 loss-of-function mutant, aif2-1, exhibited heightened sensitivity to freezing before and after cold acclimation. In contrast, ectopic expression of AIF2, but not the C-terminal-deleted AIF2 variant, restored freezing tolerance. AIF2 enhanced ICE1 stability during cold acclimation and promoted the transcriptional expression of CBFs and downstream cold-responsive genes, ultimately enhancing plant tolerance to freezing stress. MITOGEN-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASES 3 and 6 (MPK3/6), known negative regulators of freezing tolerance, interacted with and phosphorylated AIF2, subjecting it to protein degradation. Furthermore, transient co-expression of MPK3/6 with AIF2 and ICE1 downregulated AIF2/ICE1-induced transactivation of CBF2 expression. AIF2 interacted preferentially with BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE 2 (BIN2) and MPK3/6 during the early and later stages of cold acclimation, respectively, thereby differentially regulating AIF2 activity in a cold acclimation time-dependent manner. Moreover, AIF2 acted additively in a gain-of-function mutant of BRASSINAZOLE-RESISTANT 1 (BZR1; bzr1-1D) and a triple knockout mutant of BIN2 and its homologs (bin2bil1bil2) to induce CBFs-mediated freezing tolerance. This suggests that cold-induced AIF2 coordinates freezing tolerance along with BZR1 and BIN2, key positive and negative components, respectively, of brassinosteroid signaling pathways.

The CO2 absorption flux while using monoethanolamide (MEA) solution in a spiral-wired channel was significantly enhanced by optimizing both the descending and ascending spiral ring pitch configurations within the filled channel. In this study, two distinct spiral ring pitch configurations were integrated into concentric circular membrane contactors to augment CO2 absorption flux. Spiral rods were strategically inserted to mitigate concentration polarization effects, thereby reducing mass transfer boundary layers and increasing turbulence intensity. A theoretical one-dimensional model was developed to predict absorption flux and concentration distributions across varying MEA absorbent flow rates, CO2 feed flow rates, and inlet CO2 concentrations in the gas feed. Theoretical predictions of absorption flux improvement were validated against experimental results, demonstrating favorable agreement for both ascending and descending spiral ring pitch operations. Interestingly, the results indicated that descending spiral ring pitch operations achieved higher turbulent intensity compared to ascending configurations, thereby alleviating concentration polarization resistance and enhancing CO2 absorption flux with reduced polarization effects. Specifically, under conditions of a 40% inlet CO2 concentration and 5 cm3/s MEA feed flow rate, a notable 83.69% enhancement in absorption flux was achieved compared to using an empty channel configuration. Moreover, a generalized expression for the Sherwood number was derived to predict the mass transfer coefficient for CO2 absorption in concentric circular membrane contactors, providing a practical tool for performance estimation. The economic feasibility of the spiral-wired module was also assessed by evaluating both absorption flux improvement and incremental power consumption. Overall, these findings underscore the effectiveness of optimizing spiral ring pitch configurations in enhancing CO2 absorption flux, offering insights into improving the efficiency and economic viability of CO2 capture technologies.

OBJECTIVE: Intrinsic capacity (IC) and frailty are complementary constructs that encapsulate functional capacities of older adults. Although earlier studies suggest the utility of composite IC scores in predicting risk of frailty, key gaps remain with the lack of direct comparative studies between different IC scales and lack of a composite score based on the World Health Organization Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) tool. We aimed to compare different IC scales, including an ICOPE-based scale, in their predictive ability for risk of frailty at 2 years in healthy community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 230 participants (age: 67.2 ± 7.4 years) from the GeriLABS-2 cohort study. METHODS: We derived composite scores by summing 4 IC domains (locomotion, cognition, vitality, and psychological). We compared composite scores of 4 scales: IC1-Chew 2021, range: 0-8; IC2-Liu 2021, range: 0-4; IC3-ICOPE, range: 0-4; IC4-modified ICOPE, range: 0-8. The primary outcome was risk of frailty using the modified Fried Frailty Phenotype. We performed logistic regression to examine the association of baseline composite IC with risk of frailty. We also examined the impact of individual domains and number of impaired domains on risk of frailty. RESULTS: Among 193 (83.9%) older adults who completed 2-year follow-up, 20 (10.4%) met criteria for risk of frailty. When adjusted for covariates, 2-point per domain scales (IC1/IC4) predicted increased risk of frailty (OR, 4.31; 95% CI, 1.55-11.96; OR, 5.00; 95% CI, 1.75-14.26). When further adjusted for baseline frailty, only IC4 remained significant (OR, 4.28; 95% CI, 1.45-12.60). Among the domains, impaired locomotion and vitality were associated with risk of frailty. Greater number of impaired domains predicted increased risk of frailty (IC1/IC2: ß = 0.18-0.19, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Baseline composite IC score using 2-point per domain scales better predicted risk of frailty at 2 years, predicated on impaired locomotion/vitality and greater number of impaired domains. For early identification of healthy older adults at risk of frailty, an ICOPE-based scale should be considered, as it is effective and accessible.

The application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in the treatment of wastewater has achieved increasing attention, as it enhances the efficiency and sustainability of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This paper explores the application of ANN-based models in WWTPs, focusing on the latest published research work, by presenting the effectiveness of ANNs in predicting, estimating, and treatment of diverse types of wastewater. Furthermore, this review comprehensively examines the applicability of the ANNs in various processes and methods used for wastewater treatment, including membrane and membrane bioreactors, coagulation/flocculation, UV-disinfection processes, and biological treatment systems. Additionally, it provides a detailed analysis of pollutants viz organic and inorganic substances, nutrients, pharmaceuticals, drugs, pesticides, dyes, etc., from wastewater, utilizing both ANN and ANN-based models. Moreover, it assesses the techno-economic value of ANNs, provides cost estimation and energy analysis, and outlines promising future research directions of ANNs in wastewater treatment. AI-based techniques are used to predict parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) in WWTP influent. ANNs have been formed for the estimation of the removal efficiency of pollutants such as total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), BOD, and total suspended solids (TSS) in the effluent of WWTPs. The literature also discloses the use of AI techniques in WWT is an economical and energy-effective method. AI enhances the efficiency of the pumping system, leading to energy conservation with an impressive average savings of approximately 10%. The system can achieve a maximum energy savings state of 25%, accompanied by a notable reduction in costs of up to 30%.
