PURPOSE: Despite increasing use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) among U.S. adolescents, there is limited literature on factors affecting intrauterine device (IUD) or subdermal implant use. This study aimed to describe statewide rates, and associated patient and provider factors of adolescent IUD or implant initiation and continuation. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used N.C. Medicaid claims data. 10,408 adolescents were eligible (i.e., 13-19 years, female sex, continuous Medicaid enrollment, had an IUD or implant insertion or removal code from January 1, 2013, to October 1, 2015). Bivariate analyses assessed differences in adolescents using IUD versus implant. Kaplan-Meier curves were created to assess IUD or implant discontinuation through December 31, 2018. RESULTS: Adolescents initiated 8,592 implants and 3,369 IUDs (N = 11,961). There were significant differences in nearly all provider and patient factors for those who initiated implants versus IUDs. 16% of implants and 53% of IUDs were removed in the first year. Younger (i.e., age <18 years old), Hispanic, and Black adolescents had higher adjusted continuation of implants compared with older and White adolescents, respectively (both p < .001). Those whose IUD was inserted by an obstetrician/gynecologist provider had lower continuation of IUDs compared with non-obstetrician/gynecologist providers (p < .001). DISCUSSION: We found that age-related, racial, and ethnic disparities exist in both implant and IUD continuation. Practice changes to support positive adolescent experiences with implant and IUD insertion and removals are needed, including patient-centered health care provider training in contraception counseling, LARC initiation and removal training for adolescent-facing providers, and broader clinic capacity for LARC services.

Objective: To examine the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness with executive function, episodic memory, and global cognition and sex differences in these associations in community-dwelling older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Design: A cross-sectional study using baseline data from the aerobic exercise and cognitive training (ACT) trial. Setting: The ACT trial conducted exercise testing in an exercise laboratory and data collections in a research facility. Participants: ACT trial participants were recruited through referrals, registries, exhibits, flyers, media, and advertisements and screened for eligibility. To be eligible for this study, ACT enrollees needed complete data on all study variables. Among 146 ACT enrollees, 142 met eligibility for this study (N=142). Interventions: None. Main Outcome Measures: Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured as peak oxygen consumption (Vo2peak) with a peak cycle-ergometer test, executive function with the EXAMINER, episodic memory with the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised, and global cognition with Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Results: The average age of the sample was 73.8±5.8 years with 16.9±2.9 years of education, with 87.3% White, 51.4% men, and 69.7% married. After controlling for covariates, Vo2peak was significantly related to executive function (b=.037, standard error [SE]=0.015, P=.0154, semipartial [sr] correlation coefficient=.239) and episodic memory (b=.590, SE=0.226, P=.0102, sr=.216), but not global cognition (b=.074, SE=0.055, P=.1837, sr=.125). For men, Vo2peak was significantly associated with executive function (b=.063, SE=0.024, P=.0099, r=.430) and episodic memory (b=1.088, SE=0.312, P=.0009, r=.382). Conclusions: Our findings show that Vo2peak was associated with executive function and episodic memory in the overall sample and in men. Future studies can examine the longitudinal relations between cardiorespiratory fitness and cognition.

Objective: Exploring the Incidence, Epidemic Trends, and Spatial Distribution Characteristics of Sporadic Hepatitis E in Hainan Province from 2013 to 2022 through four major tertiary hospitals in the Province. Methods: We collected data on confirmed cases of hepatitis E in Hainan residents admitted to the four major tertiary hospitals in Haikou City from January 2013 to December 2022. We used SPSS software to analyze the correlation between incidence rate and economy, population density and geographical location, and origin software to draw a scatter chart and SAS 9.4 software to conduct a descriptive analysis of the time trend. The distribution was analyzed using ArcMap 10.8 software (spatial autocorrelation analysis, hotspot identification, concentration, and dispersion trend analysis). SAS software was used to build an autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA) to predict the monthly number of cases in 2023 and 2024. Results: From 2013 to 2022, 1,922 patients with sporadic hepatitis E were treated in the four hospitals of Hainan Province. The highest proportion of patients (n = 555, 28.88%) were aged 50-59 years. The annual incidence of hepatitis E increased from 2013 to 2019, with a slight decrease in 2020 and 2021 and an increase in 2022. The highest number of cases was reported in Haikou, followed by Dongfang and Danzhou. We found that there was a correlation between the economy, population density, latitude, and the number of cases, with the correlation coefficient |r| value fluctuating between 0.403 and 0.421, indicating a linear correlation. At the same time, a scatter plot shows the correlation between population density and incidence from 2013 to 2022, with r2 values fluctuating between 0.5405 and 0.7116, indicating a linear correlation. Global Moran's I, calculated through spatial autocorrelation analysis, showed that each year from 2013 to 2022 all had a Moran's I value >0, indicating positive spatial autocorrelation (p < 0.01). Local Moran's I analysis revealed that from 2013 to 2022, local hotspots were mainly concentrated in the northern part of Hainan Province, with Haikou, Wenchang, Ding'an, and Chengmai being frequent hotspot regions, whereas Baoting, Qiongzhong, and Ledong were frequent cold-spot regions. Concentration and dispersion analysis indicated a clear directional pattern in the average density distribution, moving from northeast to southwest. Time-series forecast modeling showed that the forecast number of newly reported cases per month remained relatively stable in 2023 and 2024, fluctuating between 17 and 19. Conclusion: The overall incidence of hepatitis E in Hainan Province remains relatively stable. The incidence of hepatitis E in Hainan Province increased from 2013 to 2019, with a higher clustering of cases in the northeast region and a gradual spread toward the southwest over time. The ARIMA model predicted a relatively stable number of new cases each month in 2023 and 2024.

This study focuses on the design and synthesis of two novel coordination polymers (CPs), named 1 and 2, with excellent fluorescent properties. Their structures were characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, revealing that both materials exhibit promising fluorescence performance, indicating their potential as fluorescent detection tools. Additionally, 1 was chosen to be combined with chitosan (CS), resulting in the successful fabrication of a biodegradable and non-toxic efficient drug carrier, termed CS-1@Cisplatin. This carrier possesses a large surface area and good solubility, enabling sustained drug release to target cells. Given that CXC motif chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) is a key marker gene highly expressed in Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) cells and tissues, RMS was chosen as the biological model for testing. The results demonstrated that CS-1@Cisplatin effectively inhibited the invasiveness of RMS cells by significantly suppressing CXCR4 expression. Therefore, the system shows great potential for applications in RMS treatment, biometrics, and drug delivery, particularly in its unique advantage of targeting RMS by inhibiting the key marker gene CXCR4.

Computerized cognitive training (CCT) is a scalable, well-tolerated intervention that has promise for slowing cognitive decline. The effectiveness of CCT is often affected by a lack of effective engagement. Mental fatigue is a the primary factor for compromising effective engagement in CCT, particularly in older adults at risk for dementia. There is a need for scalable, automated measures that can constantly monitor and reliably detect mental fatigue during CCT. Here, we develop and validate a novel Recurrent Video Transformer (RVT) method for monitoring real-time mental fatigue in older adults with mild cognitive impairment using their video-recorded facial gestures during CCT. The RVT model achieved the highest balanced accuracy (79.58%) and precision (0.82) compared to the prior models for binary and multi-class classification of mental fatigue. We also validated our model by significantly relating to reaction time across CCT tasks (Waldχ2=5.16,p=0.023). By leveraging dynamic temporal information, the RVT model demonstrates the potential to accurately measure real-time mental fatigue, laying the foundation for future CCT research aiming to enhance effective engagement by timely prevention of mental fatigue.

Background: Sedentary behavior (SB) is detrimental to cardiometabolic disease (CMD) risk, which can begin in young adulthood. To devise effective SB-CMD interventions in young adults, it is important to understand which context-specific sedentary behaviors (CS-SB) are most detrimental for CMD risk, the lifestyle behaviors that co-exist with CS-SBs, and the socioecological predictors of CS-SB. Methods: This longitudinal observational study will recruit 500 college-aged (18-24 years) individuals. Two laboratory visits will occur, spaced 12 months apart, where a composite CMD risk score (e.g., arterial stiffness, metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers, heart rate variability, and body composition) will be calculated, and questionnaires to measure lifestyle behaviors and different levels of the socioecological model will be administered. After each visit, total SB (activPAL) and CS-SB (television, transportation, academic/ occupational, leisure computer, "other"; ecological momentary assessment) will be measured across seven days. Discussion: It is hypothesized that certain CS-SB will show stronger associations with CMD risk, compared to T-SB, even after accounting for coexisting lifestyle behaviors. It is expected that a range of intra-individual, inter-individual, and physical environment socioecological factors will predict CS-SB. The findings from this study will support the development of an evidence-based, multi-level intervention to target SB reduction and mitigate CMD risk in CBYA.

Traditional Li-ion intercalation chemistry into graphite anodes exclusively utilizes the cointercalation-free or cointercalation mechanism. The latter mechanism is based on ternary graphite intercalation compounds (t-GICs), where glyme solvents were explored and proved to deliver unsatisfactory cyclability in LIBs. Herein, we report a novel intercalation mechanism, that is, in situ synthesis of t-GIC in the tetrahydrofuran (THF) electrolyte via a spontaneous, controllable reaction between binary-GIC (b-GIC) and free THF molecules during initial graphite lithiation. The spontaneous transformation from b-GIC to t-GIC, which is different from conventional cointercalation chemistry, is characterized and quantified via operando synchrotron X-ray and electrochemical analyses. The resulting t-GIC chemistry obviates the necessity for complete Li-ion desolvation, facilitating rapid kinetics and synchronous charge/discharge of graphite particles, even under high current densities. Consequently, the graphite anode demonstrates unprecedented fast charging (1 min), dendrite-free low-temperature performance, and ultralong lifetimes exceeding 10 000 cycles. Full cells coupled with a layered cathode display remarkable cycling stability upon a 15 min charging and excellent rate capability even at -40 °C. Furthermore, our chemical strategies are shown to extend beyond Li-ion batteries to encompass Na-ion and K-ion batteries, underscoring their broad applicability. Our work contributes to the advancement of graphite intercalation chemistry and presents a low-cost, adaptable approach for achieving fast-charging and low-temperature batteries.

BACKGROUND: The population of people living with dementia (PLwD) continues to grow in Japan where advance care planning (ACP) for PLwD is relatively new. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility and cultural acceptability of a dementia-specific ACP communication skills toolkit for Japanese primary care clinicians. METHODS: We delivered 13 training sessions in primary care clinics across central Japan and conducted a post-training survey to assess whether the toolkit increased confidence in dementia-specific ACP communication skills and the acceptability of the toolkit with the following four statements: (1) The language in the sessions was clear, (2) The sessions took an appropriate amount of time to complete, (3) The design of the sessions was an effective educational method, and (4) The sessions were culturally appropriate for communication with Japanese patients with dementia and their family members. We asked participants to respond using a 5-point Likert scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree. RESULTS: All participants were Japanese and included 80 physicians (mean age 39.8 years), 33 nurses (mean age 45.7 years), and 58 other participants (mean age 42.9 years), who were 30.0%, 87.9%, and 55.2% female, respectively. Most participants practiced in rural settings. In pre- post-comparisons, participant confidence increased in determining capacity, understanding dementia prognosis, goals of care, eliciting surrogates, recommending self-care practices to families, and leading family meetings (all p < 0.001). Most participants strongly agreed or agreed that the toolkit was an effective method (96.9%), took an appropriate amount of time (94.5%), contained clear language (89.8%), and was culturally appropriate (73.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Dementia-specific ACP communication skills toolkit can be delivered in Japan. Japanese primary care clinicians generally felt the dementia-specific ACP toolkit increased their confidence in ACP communication skills and was acceptable. The language, time, and design were well received, though further work is needed to improve the cultural appropriateness of the toolkit.

BACKGROUND: Platinum resistance is the primary cause of poor survival in ovarian cancer (OC) patients. Targeted therapies and biomarkers of chemoresistance are critical for the treatment of OC patients. Our previous studies identified cell surface CD55, a member of the complement regulatory proteins, drives chemoresistance and maintenance of cancer stem cells (CSCs). CSCs are implicated in tumor recurrence and metastasis in multiple cancers. METHODS: Protein localization assays including immunofluorescence and subcellular fractionation were used to identify CD55 at the cell surface and nucleus of cancer cells. Protein half-life determinations were used to compare cell surface and nuclear CD55 stability. CD55 deletion mutants were generated and introduced into cancer cells to identify the nuclear trafficking code, cisplatin sensitivity, and stem cell frequency that were assayed using in vitro and in vivo models. Detection of CD55 binding proteins was analyzed by immunoprecipitation followed by mass spectrometry. Target pathways activated by CD55 were identified by RNA sequencing. RESULTS: CD55 localizes to the nucleus of a subset of OC specimens, ascites from chemoresistant patients, and enriched in chemoresistant OC cells. We determined that nuclear CD55 is glycosylated and derived from the cell surface pool of CD55. Nuclear localization is driven by a trafficking code containing the serine/threonine (S/T) domain of CD55. Nuclear CD55 is necessary for cisplatin resistance, stemness, and cell proliferation in OC cells. CD55 S/T domain is necessary for nuclear entry and inducing chemoresistance to cisplatin in both in vitro and in vivo models. Deletion of the CD55 S/T domain is sufficient to sensitize chemoresistant OC cells to cisplatin. In the nucleus, CD55 binds and attenuates the epigenetic regulator and tumor suppressor ZMYND8 with a parallel increase in H3K27 trimethylation and members of the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2. CONCLUSIONS: For the first time, we show CD55 localizes to the nucleus in OC and promotes CSC and chemoresistance. Our studies identify a therapeutic mechanism for treating platinum resistant ovarian cancer by blocking CD55 nuclear entry.

Aging and obesity pose significant threats to public health and are major contributors to muscle atrophy. The trends in muscle fiber types under these conditions and the transcriptional differences between different muscle fiber types remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate distinct responses of fast/glycolytic fibers and slow/oxidative fibers to aging and obesity. We found that in muscles dominated by oxidative fibers, the proportion of oxidative fibers remains unchanged during aging and obesity. However, in muscles dominated by glycolytic fibers, despite the low content of oxidative fibers, a significant decrease in proportion of oxidative fibers was observed. Consistently, our study uncovered that during aging and obesity, fast/glycolytic fibers specifically increased the expression of genes associated with muscle atrophy and inflammation, including Dkk3, Ccl8, Cxcl10, Cxcl13, Fbxo32, Depp1, and Chac1, while slow/oxidative fibers exhibit elevated expression of antioxidant protein Nqo-1 and downregulation of Tfrc. Additionally, we noted substantial differences in the expression of calcium-related signaling pathways between fast/glycolytic fibers and slow/oxidative fibers in response to aging and obesity. Treatment with a calcium channel inhibitor thapsigargin significantly increased the abundance of oxidative fibers. Our study provides additional evidence to support the transcriptomic differences in muscle fiber types under pathophysiological conditions, thereby establishing a theoretical basis for modulating muscle fiber types in disease treatment.

Enhanced denitrification has been reported under weak electric fields. However, it is difficult to investigate the mechanism of enhanced denitrification due to the complex interspecific interactions of mixed-culture systems. In this study, Pseudomonas stutzeri, capable of denitrification under anaerobic conditions, was selected for treating low COD/N (2.0, ratio between concentration of chemical oxygen demand and NO3--N) artificial wastewater under constant external voltages of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 V. The results revealed that P. stutzeri exhibited the highest efficiency in nitrate reduction at 0.2 V. Moreover, the maximum nitrate removal rate was 15.96 mg/(L·h) among the closed-circuit groups, 19.39% higher than that under the open-circuit group. Additionally, a notable reduction in nitrite accumulation was observed under weak electric fields. Enzyme activity analysis showed that the nitrate reductase activities were significantly increased among the closed-circuit groups, while nitrite reductase activities were inhibited. Transcriptomic analysis indicated that amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and energy metabolism were increased, enhancing the resistance of P. stutzeri to environmental stress and the efficiency of carbon source utilization for denitrification. The current study examined the impacts of weak electric fields on enzyme activities and microbial metabolic pathways and offers valuable insights into the mechanism by which denitrification is enhanced by weak electric fields.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the diagnostic and therapeutic value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound-guided endoscopic retrograde appendicitis treatment (ERAT) in patients with uncomplicated appendicitis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on clinical and ultrasound data collected from 105 pediatric patients with uncomplicated appendicitis between January 2020 and December 2023. The ultrasound findings before and after treatment, as well as postoperative follow-up and recurrence rates, were summarized and analyzed. RESULTS: Successful intubation was achieved in 96 patients (91.4%). The conventional ultrasound appendix visualization rate was 39.6% (38/105), while the appendix visualization rate after contrast-enhanced ultrasound-guidance was 75% (72/105). Contrast-enhanced ultrasound revealed various appendiceal morphologic changes in 89 patients, such as twisting, tortuosity, stiffness, rough inner wall, dilated diameter, and narrowing of the lumen. Additionally, local filling defects, which indicated the presence of fecal stones or debris deposition, were noted in 68 patients. No leakage of the contrast agent occurred. Post-treatment evaluation showed improvement in appendiceal diameter, lumen, and filling defects (P < .01). The follow-up rate was 82 of 89 patients (92.1%), all of whom recovered well without a recurrence. The recurrence rate was 7.9% (7/89). Among the patients with recurrences, five patients resolved after medical treatment and two patients recovered after surgical treatment. CONCLUSION: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound-guided ERAT for uncomplicated appendicitis is safe and effective. Specifically, the appendix is increased, which facilitates an evaluation of therapeutic effectiveness. ERAT serves as a valuable supplementary modality to determine the need for surgical treatment of acute appendicitis, which is of significant clinical value.

The implementation of pretreatment drug-resistance (PDR) surveillance among people living with HIV-1 (PLWH) is a top priority in countries using efavirenz (EFV)/nevirapine (NVP) for first-line ART. In this study, we assessed the prevalence of PDR among PLWH in Shanghai, China during 2017-2021, and to reveal PDR transmission between Shanghai and other regions of China. A total of 5050 PLWH not on ART during 2017-2021 were included. Partial HIV-1 pol sequences were amplified, sequenced, and analysed for drug-resistance mutations (DRMs). Besides, transmission network of PDR variants was inferred using HIV-TRACE. The overall prevalence of PDR was 4.8% (242/5050; 95% CI, 4.2-5.4). Prevalence of NNRTI-associated PDR was 3.9% (95% CI, 3.4-4.5), higher than those of NRTI-associated (0.8%; 95% CI, 0.5-1.1) and PI-associated PDR (0.9%; 95% CI, 0.6-1.2). High prevalence of PDR (especially high-level resistance) to EFV (132/5050, 2.6%) and NVP (137/5050, 2.7%) were found. CRF01_AE (46.0%) was the predominant HIV-1 genotype with any DRMs, followed by CRF55_01B (21.0%), and CRF07_BC (15.1%). Two NRTI-associated (S68G/N/R and T215A/N/S/Y), five NNRTI-associated (V179D/E/T/L, K103N/R/S/T, E138A/G/K, V106M/I/A and Y181C/I) and two PI-associated mutations (M46I/L/V and Q58E) were the most common observed DRMs in PDR patients in Shanghai. The vast majority of S68G occurred in CRF01_AE (45%). M46I/L/V and Q58E showed a relatively high prevalence in CRF01_AE (4.1%) and CRF07_BC (12.6%). Transmission network analyses demonstrated cross-regional transmission links of PDR variants between Shanghai and other regions of China, which was mainly driven by the potential low-level DRM V179D/E. These results provide crucial information for clinical decision making of first-line ART in PLWH with PDR.

BACKGROUND: The substrate employed in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) constitutes an essential element in the cancer detection methodology. In this research, we introduce a three-dimensional (3D) structured SERS substrate that integrates a porous membrane with silver nanoparticles to enhance SERS spectral signals through the utilization of the aggregation effect of silver nanoparticles. This enhancement is crucial because accurate detection results strongly depend on the intensity of specific peaks in Raman spectroscopy. A highly sensitive SERS substrate can significantly improve the accuracy of detection results. RESULTS: We collected 66 plasma samples from individuals with kidney cancer and control individuals, including both bladder cancer patients and healthy individuals. Then, we utilized substrates with and without porous membranes to acquire the SERS spectra of the samples, enabling us to evaluate the enhancement effect of our SERS substrate. The spectral analysis demonstrated enhanced peak intensities in the experimental group (with porous substrate) compared to the control group (without porous substrate). The uniformity and reproducibility of the SERS substrate are also significantly enhanced, which is very helpful for improving the accuracy of detection results. Additionally, the Principal Component Analysis-Linear Discriminant Analysis algorithm (PCA-LDA) was employed to classify the SERS spectra of both groups. In the experimental group, the classification accuracy was 98.5 % for kidney cancer, and 83.3 % for kidney and bladder cancer. Compared to the control group, it improved by 3 % and 12.6 % respectively. SIGNIFICANT: This indicates that our 3D structured SERS substrate combined with multivariate statistical algorithms PCA-LDA can not only improve the accuracy of SERS detection technology in single cancer detection, but also has great potential in multiple cancer detection. This 3D structured SERS substrate is expected to become a new auxiliary means for cancer detection.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has found a non-linear relationship between sleep duration and mental health/quality of life. However, it is currently unclear which age group is more affected by sleep duration and what the optimal sleep duration is for each age group. Additionally, the underlying mechanisms of the non-linear relationship between sleep duration and quality of life are not well understood. METHODS: Therefore, this study utilized questionnaire data from 20,962 participants in the Chinese PBICR-2022 database(Cross-sectional study) and constructed models to analyze the relationship between sleep duration and quality of life. RESULTS: The results showed that the optimal sleep duration varied among different age groups: approximately 9 h for adolescents, 8 h for early/middle-aged adults, and 7 h for older adults. Compared to other age groups, less or more sleep duration had a greater impact on mental health and quality of life in adolescents. Furthermore, mental health was found to play a significant mediating role between sleep duration and quality of life in both the less sleep group and the more sleep group, but this mediating effect was not significant among the older adults in the less sleep group, whereas the mediating effect of mental health was not significant among the middle-aged adults in the more sleep group. CONCLUSIONS: This suggests that different age groups have different optimal sleep duration, and age may be an important factor influencing the relationship between sleep duration and mental health/quality of life, with mental health playing a mediating role in the relationship between sleep duration and quality of life.

The effect of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy on knee osteoarthritis (KOA) has been contradictory in previous meta-analyses. This umbrella review on published meta-analyses aimed to investigate the effect of MSCs and PRP on KOA. We systematically searched Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane databases to include related meta-analyses. The outcome included studies reporting visual analog scale scores, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scores, International Knee Documentation Committee scores, and the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. A total of 28 meta-analyses with 32 763 participants. MSCs and PRP therapies were significantly associated with an improvement in KOA scores. This umbrella meta-analysis supports the beneficial health effects of MSCs and PRP in KOA.

Clonal plants are widely distributed in the riparian zone and play a very important role in the maintenance of wetland ecosystem function. Flooding is an environmental stress for plants in the riparian zone, and the response of plants varies according to the depth and duration of flooding. However, there is a lack of research on the growth response of clonal plants during flooding, and the endogenous hormone response mechanism of clonal plants is still unclear. In the present study, Alternanthera philoxeroides, a clonal plant in the riparian zone, was used to investigate the time-dependent stem elongation, the elongation of different part of the immature internodes, and the relationship between growth elongation and the phytohormone gibberellin (GA) under a series of submergence depths (0 m, 2 m, 5 m, and 9 m). The results showed that stem elongation occurred under all treatments, however, compared to 0 m (control), plants grew more under 2 m and 5 m submergence depth, while grew less under 9 m water depth. Additionally, basal part elongation of the immature internode was the predominant factor contributing to the stem growth of A. philoxeroides under different submergence depths. The phytohormone contents in basal part of the mature and immature internodes showed that GA induced the differential elongation of internode. Plant submerged at depth of 2 m had the highest GA accumulation, but plant submerged at depth of 9 m had the lowest GA concentration. These data suggested that GA biosynthesis are essential for stem elongation in A. philoxeroides, and the basal part of the immature internode was the main position of the GA biosynthesis. This study provided new information about the rapid growth and invasion of the clonal plant A. philoxeroides around the world, further clarified the effects of submergence depth and duration on the elongation of the stem, and deepened our understanding of the growth response of terrestrial plants in deeply flooded environments.

OBJECTIVES: Average values for self-measured blood pressure (SMBP) more accurately reflect a patient's risk of cardiovascular disease than do office measurements. Oftentimes, however, patients provide lists of individual home blood pressure (BP) measurements, and average values cannot be computed within the time constraints of a clinic visit. In contrast, the home BP load - defined as the proportion of BP values greater than a partition value (e.g., 130 mmHg) - can be easily calculated. We examined the utility of the BP load in predicting the mean SMBP and confirming elevated SMBP. METHODS: Four hundred twenty untreated adults at least 30 years of age acquired SMBP data twice in the morning and twice in the evening over 10 days. The 'true' SMBP was defined as the mean of these 40 determinations. RESULTS: Using all 10 days of BP data and a systolic BP threshold of 130 mmHg, the average SMBP associated with a home BP load of 0.50 was 130 mmHg, with a 95% prediction interval of 126-133 mmHg. True systolic SMBP was approximately 6 mmHg lower and higher at home BP loads of 0.25 and 0.75, respectively. There was a 90% probability that the true systolic SMBP was greater than 130 mmHg if the systolic home BP load was at least 0.60. Corresponding values for 3 days and 1 day of SMBP were at least 0.68 and at least 0.84, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our analysis demonstrates that the home BP load can be used to estimate the average BP acquired on home monitoring and confirm elevated SMBP.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) serves as a vitreous substitute owing to its ability to mimic the physical functions of native vitreous humor. However, pure HA hydrogels alone do not provide sufficient protection against potential inflammatory risks following vitrectomy. In this study, HA was crosslinked with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE) to form HA hydrogels (HB). Subsequently, the anti-inflammatory agent epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) was added to the hydrogel (HBE) for ophthalmic applications as a vitreous substitute. The characterization results indicated the successful preparation of HB with transparency, refractive index, and osmolality similar to those of native vitreous humor, and with good injectability. The anti-inflammatory ability of HBE was also confirmed by the reduced expression of inflammatory genes in retinal pigment epithelial cells treated with HBE compared with those treated with HB. In a New Zealand white rabbit model undergoing vitreous substitution treatment, HBE 50 (EGCG 50 µM addition) exhibited positive results at 28 days post-surgery. These outcomes included restored intraocular pressure, improved electroretinogram responses, minimal increase in corneal thickness, and no inflammation during histological examination. This study demonstrated the potential of an injectable HA-BDDE cross-linked hydrogel containing EGCG as a vitreous substitute for vitrectomy applications, offering prolonged degradation time and anti-inflammatory effects postoperatively.

The development of novel therapeutic approaches to facilitate endometrial repair and regeneration while preventing adhesion recurrence is a crucial research objective aimed at enhancing clinical outcomes for women with intrauterine adhesions (IUA). In this study, we introduced an injectable Alg-GMA/PTSB zwitterionic hydrogel, characterized by excellent biocompatibility, anti-protein adsorption properties, and biodegradability. In a rat model, the hydrogel significantly promoted the regeneration and angiogenesis of damaged endometrial tissue, leading to improved recovery of epithelial cells, glands, proliferation, and vascularization. Furthermore, it exhibited the ability to suppress cellular apoptosis and collagen deposition, thereby mitigating fibrosis. Additionally, the hydrogel restored the expression of estrogen/progesterone receptors and endometrial receptivity markers, contributing to enhanced embryo implantation and fertility. These findings underscore the potential of the hydrogel as a promising therapeutic strategy for addressing endometrial injury, reducing fibrosis, restoring fertility, and ultimately improving outcomes for women with IUA.
