RESUMO

Shewanella baltica is a specific spoilage organism of golden pomfret. This study aims to explore the antibacterial mechanism of slightly acidic electrolysed water (SAEW) against S. baltica (strains ABa4, ABe2 and BBe1) in golden pomfret broths by metabolomics, proteomics and bioinformatics analyses. S. baltica was decreased by at least 3.94 log CFU/mL after SAEW treatment, and strain ABa4 had the highest resistance. Under SAEW stress, amino acids and organic acids in S. baltica decreased, and nucleotide related compounds degraded. Furthermore, 100 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified. Most DEPs of strains ABe2 and BBe1 were down-regulated, while some DEPs of strain ABa4 were up-regulated, especially those oxidative stress related proteins. These results suggest that the modes of SAEW against S. baltica can be traced to the inhibition of amino acid, carbon, nucleotide and sulphur metabolisms, and the loss of functional proteins for temperature regulation, translation, motility and protein folding.

RESUMO

Pt-based alloy with high mass activity and durability is highly desired for proton exchange membrane fuel cells, yet a great challenge remains due to the high mass transport resistance near catalysts with lowering Pt loading. Herein, an extensible approach employing atomic layer deposition to accurately introduce a gas-phase metal precursor into platinum nanoparticles (NPs) pre-filled mesoporous channels is reported, achieved by controlling both the deposition site and quantity. Following the spatially confined alloying treatment, the prepared PtSn alloy catalyst within mesopores demonstrates a small size and homogeneous distribution (2.10 ± 0.53 nm). The membrane electrode assembly with mesoporous carbon-supported PtSn alloy catalyst achieves a high initial mass activity of 0.85 A mg Pt - 1 ${\mathrm{mg}}_{\mathrm{Pt}}^{-1}$ at 0.9 V, which is attributed to the smallest local oxygen transport resistance (3.68 S m-1) ever reported. The mass activity of the catalyst only decreases by 11% after 30000 cycles of accelerated durability test, representing superior full-cell durability among the reported Pt-based alloy catalysts. The enhanced activity and durability are attributed to the decreased adsorption energy of oxygen intermediates on Pt surface and the strong electronic interaction between Pt and Sn inhibiting Pt dissolution.

RESUMO

In this study, ultrasonic sensors were used to measure the vertical vortex at flood discharge outlets in real time, and numerical simulations and model experiments were conducted. When a sound signal passes through a vortex, its propagation characteristics will change, which helps to determine the existence of the vortex. Moreover, its characteristic parameters can be obtained through inversion. In this paper, first, the theories of acoustic measurement methods were introduced and their feasibility was verified through a comparison between Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurement and numerical simulation results. Then, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method was used to simulate the vertical vortex at the flood discharge outlets of hydraulic structures and the simulation data were restored to the actual size at scale. Finally, acoustic numerical simulations of actual vortex data were conducted, and ultrasonic sensors were used to measure the velocity of a simplified vertical vortex model under laboratory conditions. The research results indicate that the acoustic measurement method proposed in this article is effective in the measurement of the characteristic parameters of vertical vortex with a core radius of 0.03~0.05 m and a maximum tangential velocity of 0.5 m/s, the measurement error of the maximum tangential velocity is within 10%.

RESUMO

Imide functionalization has been widely proved to be an effective approach to enrich optoelectronic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, appending multiple imide groups onto linear acenes is still a synthetic challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that by taking advantage of a "breaking and mending" strategy, a linear pentacene tetraimides (PeTI) was synthesized through a three-step sequence started from the naphthalene diimides (NDI). Compared with the parent pentacene, PeTI shows a deeper-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, narrower bandgap and better stability. The redox behavior of PeTI was firstly evaluated by generating a stable radical anion specie with the assistance of cobaltocene (CoCp2), and the structure of the electron transfer (ET) complex was confirmed by the X-ray crystallography. Moreover, due to the presence of multiple redox-active sites, we are able to show that the state-of-the-art energy storage performance of the dealkylated PeTI (designated as PeTCTI) in organic potassium ion batteries (OPIBs) as an anode. Our results shed light on the application of multiple imides functionalized linear acenes, and the reported synthetic strategy provides an effective way to get access to longer nanoribbon imides with fascinating electronic properties.

RESUMO

Several observational studies have reported a correlation between the gut microbiota (GM) and the risk of acute pancreatitis (AP). However, the causal relationship between them remains uncertain. We conducted a 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study using pooled data from genome-wide association studies of 211 taxa (131 genera, 35 families, 20 orders, 16 classes, and 9 phyla) and AP patients. We evaluated the causal relationship between the GM and AP using methods such as inverse-variance weighting, MR-Egger, weighted medians, simple mode, and weighted mode. Cochran Q test, MR-Egger regression intercept analysis, and MR-PRESSO were used to examine the heterogeneity, multipotency, and outlier values of the variables, respectively. The reverse causal relationship between AP and the GM was assessed with reverse MR. In total, 5 gut microbial taxa were significantly associated with AP. The inverse-variance weighting results indicated that Acidaminococcaceae (odds ratio [OR]: 0.81, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.66-1.00, P = .045) and Ruminococcaceae UCG004 (OR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.72-0.99, P = .040) were protective factors against the occurrence of AP. Coprococcus 3 (OR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.03-1.70, P = .030), Eisenbergiella (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.00-1.28, P = .043), and the Eubacterium fissicatena group (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.05-1.33, P = .006) were risk factors for the development of AP. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis proved our results to be reliable. Reverse MR analysis did not indicate any causal relationship between AP and the GM. This study revealed a complex causal relationship between 5 GM taxa and AP, providing new insights into the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of the GM in AP patients.

RESUMO

The Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression system has been developed and applied to various plants as an alternative to stable transformation. However, its application in tomatoes is still limited due to low expression efficiency. In this study, we describe an improved vacuum-infiltration system that can be used in both tomato fruits and leaves. Notably, this study is the first report of vacuum infiltration in attached tomato fruits. The feasibility of the improved vacuum-infiltration system in Micro-Tom tomato was confirmed by various assays, including multiple fluorescent protein expression analysis, ß-glucuronidase activity analysis, and RUBY reporter visualization. Subsequently, the improved vacuum-infiltration system was successfully applied to tomato biotechnology research. Herein, a trichome-specific promoter in tomato was identified that can drive the directional synthesis of specific plant natural products (PNPs). Additionally, based on the assessment results of the improved vacuum-infiltration system, we obtained a flavonoid-rich tomato variety through the stable transformation of AmRosea and AmDelila. In a significant practical application, we successfully synthesized the high-value scutellarin in tomato, which provides an alternative route for the production of PNPs from plants. In addition, the improved vacuum-infiltration system has been demonstrated to be suitable for commercial tomato varieties ('Emerald' and 'Provence') as well. The improved vacuum-infiltration system not only speeds up fundamental and applied research in tomato but also offers an additional powerful tool for advancing tomato synthetic biology research.

RESUMO

Inserting an insulating layer between the charge transport layer (CTL) and quantum dot emitting layer (QDL) is widely used in improving the performance of quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). However, the additional layer inevitably leads to energy loss and joule heat. Herein, a monolayer silane coupling agent is used to modify the said interfaces via the self-limiting adsorption effect. Because the ultrathin layers induce negligible series resistance to the device, they can partially passivate the interfacial defects on the electron transport side and help confine the electrons within the QDL on the hole transport side. These interfacial modifications can not only suppress the nonradiative recombination but also slow down the aging of the hole transport layer. The findings here underline a low-temperature adsorption-based strategy for effective interfacial modification which can be used in any layer-by-layer device structures.

RESUMO

In this study, comparative investigation on the effect of dry heating treatment (DHT) and annealing (ANN) on multi-structure, physicochemical properties and in vitro digestibility of black highland barley (BHB) starch was done. Results revealed that both DHT and ANN did not affect the "A"-type crystalline pattern and FT-IR spectroscopy of BHB starch, but changed the morphology, raised water absorption capacity and lowered viscosities. Compared to native starch, DHT- and ANN-modified samples had totally opposite alteration trends in amylose content, color characteristics, oil absorption capacity, gelatinization parameters and pasting temperature. These changes were positively related to treatment temperature and time for DHT-modified starches, while which were dependant on treatment duration for ANN-modified starches. Total in vitro hydrolysis rate and rapidly digestive starch content in starch markedly raised after DHT, whereas slowly digestive starch and RS levels decreased. Nevertheless, ANN significantly improved the hydrolyzation stability with treatment time prolonging, especially increased RS content and lowered RDS level. Therefore, this study identified both DHT and ANN were effective methods to alter the properties of BHB starch, and more importantly, they had distinguishing influence by different mechanisms, which would remind user to select appropriate means for physical starch modification based on different application purposes.

RESUMO

Low-dimensional nanostructures, especially one-dimensional materials, exhibit remarkable anisotropic characteristics due to their low symmetry, making them promising candidates for polarization-sensitive photodetection. Here, we present a chemical vapor deposition synthesis method for tellurium suboxide (TeOx), confirming the practicality of photodetectors constructed from TeOx nanowires (NWs) in high-responsivity, broadband, and polarization-sensitive detection. By precisely controlling the thermodynamics and kinetics of TeOx NWs growth, we achieve large-scale growth of TeOx NWs with highly controllable dimensions and propose a method to induce intrinsic built-in strain in TeOx NWs. Photodetectors based on quasi-one-dimensional TeOx NWs with ohmic contact demonstrate broadband spectral response (638-1550 nm), high responsivity (13 700 mA·W-1), and superior air stability. Particularly, owing to the inherent structural anisotropy of the photodetectors, they exhibit polarization-sensitive photodetection, with anisotropy ratios of 1.70 and 1.71 at 638 and 808 nm, respectively.

RESUMO

Nanomaterials with photoresponsivity have garnered attention due to their fluorescence imaging, photodynamic, and photothermal therapeutic properties. In this study, a photoresponsivity nanoassembly was developed by using photosensitizers and carbon dots (CDs). Due to their multiple excitation peaks and multicolor fluorescence emission, especially their membrane-permeating properties, these nanoassemblies can label cells with multiple colors and track cell imaging in real time. Additionally, the incorporation of photosensitizers and CDs provides the nanoassemblies with the potential for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). The nanoassemblies effectively suppressed the activity of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus through PDT and PTT. Moreover, the nanoassemblies exhibited a high affinity for E. coli and S. aureus. These distinct features confer broad-spectrum antibacterial properties to the nanoassemblies. As a photoresponsivity nanoplatform, these nanoassemblies have demonstrated potential applications in the fields of bioimaging and antimicrobial.

RESUMO

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic emergent paramyxovirus that can cause severe encephalitis and respiratory infections in humans, with a high fatality rate ranging from 40% to 75%. Currently, there are no approved human vaccines or antiviral drugs against NiV. Here, we designed a ferritin-based self-assembling nanoparticle displaying the NiV G head domain on the surface (NiV G-ferritin) and assessed immune responses elicited by the soluble NiV G head domain (NiV sG) or NiV G-ferritin. Immunization with NiV G-ferritin or NiV sG conferred complete protection against lethal NiV challenge without detection of viral RNA in Syrian golden hamsters. Compared to NiV sG, NiV G-ferritin induced significantly faster, broader, and higher serum neutralizing responses against three pathogenic henipaviruses (NiV-Malaysia, NiV-Bangladesh, and Hendra virus). Moreover, NiV G-ferritin induced a durable neutralizing immunity in mice as antisera potently inhibited NiV infection even after six months of the third immunization. Additionally, we isolated a panel of 27 NiV G-binding monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from NiV G-ferritin immunized mice and found that these mAbs targeted four distinct antigenic sites on NiV G head domain with two sites that have not been defined previously. Notably, 25 isolated mAbs have potent neutralizing activity with 50% inhibitory concentrations less than 10 ng/mL against NiV pseudovirus. Collectively, these findings provide new insights into the immunogenicity of NiV G protein and reveal that NiV G-ferritin is a safe and highly effective vaccine candidate against Nipah virus infection.

RESUMO

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) stands as one of the most prevalent malignancies. While PD-1 immune checkpoint inhibitors have demonstrated promising therapeutic efficacy in HCC, not all patients exhibit a favorable response to these treatments. Glutamine is a crucial immune cell regulatory factor, and tumor cells exhibit glutamine dependence. In this study, HCC patients were divided into two subtypes (C1 and C2) based on glutamine metabolism-related genes via consensus clustering. The C1 pattern, in contrast to C2, was associated with a lower survival probability among HCC patients. Additionally, the C1 pattern exhibited higher proportions of patients with advanced tumor stages. The activity of C1 in glutamine metabolism and transport is significantly enhanced, while its oxidative phosphorylation activity is reduced. And, C1 was mainly involved in the progression-related pathway of HCC. Furthermore, C1 exhibited high levels of immunosuppressive cells, cytokine-receptor interactions and immune checkpoint genes, suggesting C1 as an immunosuppressive subtype. After stepwise selection based on integrated four machine learning methods, SLC1A5 was finally identified as the pivotal gene that distinguishes the subtypes. The expression of SLC1A5 was significantly positively correlated with immunosuppressive status. SLC1A5 showed the most significant correlation with macrophage infiltration, and this correlation was confirmed through the RNA-seq data of CLCA project and our cohort. Low-SLC1A5-expression samples had better immunogenicity and responsiveness to immunotherapy. As expected, SubMap and survival analysis indicated that individuals with low SLC1A5 expression were more responsive to anti-PD1 therapy. Collectively, this study categorized HCC patients based on glutamine metabolism-related genes and proposed two subclasses with different clinical traits, biological behavior, and immune status. Machine learning was utilized to identify the hub gene SLC1A5 for HCC classification, which also could predict immunotherapy response.

RESUMO

Clarifying the regional transmission and local generation contributions of ozone (O3) is important for controlling O3 pollution. To quantify the regional background and spatial-temporal variations of O3, a comprehensive study was conducted using multiple methods including principal component analysis (PCA) and TCEQ, with Henan Province as a case study. Based on monitoring data from 59 national sites in Henan Province during 2019-2021, four methods were employed to estimate the regional background of O3. Method 1 was the traditional method, performing O3 univariate-multisite PCA analysis. Method 2 was a multivariate-single-site PCA analysis considering nitrogen dioxide and meteorological conditions as constraints. Method 3 combined PCA and multiple linear regression (MLR) to determine regional background contributions, drawing on the idea of source apportionment. Method 4 was the TCEQ method that used the lowest measured O3-8h concentration as the regional background. The estimation results showed that Methods 1 and 2 were basically equal, and Methods 3 and 4 were approximately 37-60 µg·m-3 lower than Method 1. From 2019 to 2021, the changes in regional background ρ(O3-8h) estimated by Methods 1-4 were 1.6, -13.4, 5.9, and -3.5 µg·m-3, respectively. The average estimations derived from multiple methods showed that the regional background ρ(O3-8h) in Henan Province from 2019 to 2021 concentrations were 82.0, 79.0, and 79.7 µg·m-3, accounting for 75.9%, 76.4%, and 78.7% of the total regional O3-8h, respectively. The regional background O3-8h estimated by the four methods showed obvious seasonal changes, characterized by summer > spring > fall > winter.

RESUMO

In nature, methylmercury (MeHg) is primarily generated through microbial metabolism, and the ability of bacteria to methylate Hg(II) depends on both bacterial properties and environmental factors. It is widely known that, as a metabolic analog, molybdate can inhibit the sulfate reduction process and affect the growth and methylation of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). However, after it enters the cell, molybdate can be involved in various intracellular metabolic pathways as a molybdenum cofactor; whether fluctuations in its concentration affect the growth and methylation of aerobic mercury methylating strains remains unknown. To address this gap, aerobic γ-Proteobacteria strains Raoultella terrigena TGRB3 (B3) and Pseudomonas putida TGRB4 (B4), as well as an obligate anaerobic δ-Proteobacteria strain of the SRB Desulfomicrobium escambiense CGMCC 1.3481 (DE), were used as experimental strains. The growth and methylation ability of each strain were analyzed under conditions of 500 ng·L-1 Hg(II), 0 and 21% of oxygen, and 0, 0.25, 0.50, and 1 mM of MoO4 2-. In addition, in order to explore the metabolic specificity of aerobic strains, transcriptomic data of the facultative mercury-methylated strain B3 were further analyzed in an aerobic mercuric environment. The results indicated that: (a) molybdate significantly inhibited the growth of DE, while B3 and B4 exhibited normal growth. (b) Under anaerobic conditions, in DE, the MeHg content decreased significantly with increasing molybdate concentration, while in B3, MeHg production was unaffected. Furthermore, under aerobic conditions, the MeHg productions of B3 and B4 were not influenced by the molybdate concentration. (c) The transcriptomic analysis showed several genes that were annotated as members of the molybdenum oxidoreductase family of B3 and that exhibited significant differential expression. These findings suggest that the differential expression of molybdenum-binding proteins might be related to their involvement in energy metabolism pathways that utilize nitrate and dimethyl sulfoxide as electron acceptors. Aerobic bacteria, such as B3 and B4, might possess distinct Hg(II) biotransformation pathways from anaerobic SRB, rendering their growth and biomethylation abilities unaffected by molybdate.

RESUMO

The spatial-temporal distribution pattern of surface O3 over the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (QXP) was analyzed based on air quality monitoring data and meteorological data from 12 cities on the QXP from 2015 to 2021. Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filtering was employed to separate the original O3-8h series into components at different time scales. Then, multiple linear regression of meteorological variables was used to quantitatively isolate the effects of meteorology and emissions. The results revealed that the annual mass concentrations of surface O3-8h from 2015 to 2021 in 12 cities over the QXP ranged from 78.7 to 156.7 µg·m-3, and the exceedance rates of O3 mass concentrations (National Air Quality Standard of grade II) ranged from 0.7%-1.5%. The monthly O3-8h mass concentration displayed a single-peak inverted "V"-shape and a multi-peak "M"-shape. The maximum monthly concentration of O3 occurred in April to July, and valleys occurred in July, September, and December. The short-term, seasonal, and long-term components of O3-8hdecomposed by KZ filtering contributed 29.6%, 51.4%, and 9.1% to the total variance in the original O3 sequence in 12 cities, respectively. From the whole region, the meteorological conditions were unfavorable for O3 reduction on the QXP from 2015 to 2017, which made the long-term component of O3 increase by 0.2-2.1 µg·m-3. The meteorological conditions were favorable for O3-8h reduction from 2018 to 2021, which led to the long-term component of O3-8h decrease by 0.4-1.1 µg·m-3. The meteorological conditions increased the long-term component of O3-8h in Ngari, Lhasa, Naqu, Nyingchi, Qamdo, Haixi, and Xining, with an average contribution of 30.1%. The meteorological conditions decreased the long-term component of O3-8h in Shigatse and Golog, with contributions of 359.0% and 56.5%, respectively. The increase in the long-term component of O3-8h in Ngari, Shigatse, Nagqu, Haixi, and Xining could be due to the rapid decrease in the long-term component of PM2.5 (4.04 µg·ï¼ˆm3·a)-1).

RESUMO

With the gradual shift of coal mining to the western coal mining region of China, floor heave in weakly cemented mudstone roadways has become an issue affecting the safety and efficiency of coal mine production. Additionally, different mining rates can lead to fluctuating support stresses on the roof and floor of weakly cemented mudstone roadways. Therefore, obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical properties of weakly cemented mudstone at different loading rates is conducive to improving the issue of floor heave in such roadways and provides a theoretical basis for further study. In this context, a series of uniaxial mechanical tests with concurrent acoustic emission monitoring were conducted on specimens of weakly cemented mudstone under various loading rates (0.005, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 mm/s). The stress‒strain and acoustic emission response curves were obtained to effectively characterize the strength, deformation, damage, macroscale instability, and crack propagation characteristics of the mudstone under the influence of loading rate effects. The research results support the following findings: (1) With increasing loading rate, the peak strength and elastic modulus of weakly cemented mudstone significantly increase, while the peak axial strain and peak radial deformation significantly decrease. (2) With increasing loading rate, the stress required to trigger the expansion of weakly cemented mudstone gradually increases, and a significant power-law relationship arises between the strain of the mudstone at the start of expansion and the loading rate. (3) With increasing loading rate, the acoustic emission ringing count of weakly cemented mudstone increases: The failure of weakly cemented mudstone changes from small-range progressive failure to sudden failure, and the failure mode transitions from shear failure to tensile‒shear composite failure. (4) The studied mudstone damage variables increase with increasing loading rate, following an approximate exponential function. The conclusions obtained in this work can provide a theoretical basis for the evolution mechanism and control of floor heave in deep roadway mining.

RESUMO

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome is characterized by obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly, a rare congenital anomaly of the genitourinary tract, resulting from malformations of the renal tract associated with Müllerian duct anomalies. The initial symptoms of HWW frequently present after menarche and may be nonspecific, leading to a delayed diagnosis. We presented a 19-year-old female with 3-year hematuria and abdominal pain. The final diagnosis of HWW syndrome with a rare vesicovaginal fistula was made. The treatment of HWW syndrome typically involves surgical intervention. The primary treatment is resection or removal of the obstructed vaginal septum. The patient underwent excision of vaginal septum and vaginal reconstruction via hysteroscopy, as well as repair of the vesicovaginal fistula. The patient improved well after surgery and fully recovered without sequelae after 3 months. In addition, unilateral renal agenesis is one of congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract, which are the most frequent cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children. This report describes a patient of HWW syndrome with rarely combined vesicovaginal fistula, and highlights the importance of early recognition and management to prevent associated complications.

RESUMO

The development of children's social function is influenced by the social environment, and children also play an active role in shaping and nurturing this environment. The present study investigated the potential reciprocal dynamic impact of mothers' mental state talk (MST) and the development of theory of mind (ToM) in children. Using a cross-sectional design, we explored the development of ToM in 3- to 5-year-old children using an unexpected location task, an unexpected content task, an appearance-reality task, and mothers' MST during mother-child reading. The results showed the following: (1) the mothers' MST exhibited a shift from a predilection for subjective terms (such as desires) to a preference for objective terms (such as cognitions) as their children matured; (2) the development of the children's ToM was closely related to their mothers' MST. The overall MST scores, as well as the different categories and referents used in MST, were closely associated with the children's ToM development. Notably, at the age of four, a critical period emerged where the correlation between maternal MST and ToM became significantly pronounced. These findings highlight the reciprocal nature of mother-child interactions as a two-way adaptive process.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Hypocomplementaemia is common in patients with IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD). We aimed to determine the IgG4-RD features associated with hypocomplementaemia and investigate mechanisms of complement activation in this disease. METHODS: We performed a single-centre cross-sectional study of 279 patients who fulfilled the IgG4-RD classification criteria, using unadjusted and multivariable-adjusted logistic regression to identify factors associated with hypocomplementaemia. RESULTS: Hypocomplementaemia was observed in 90 (32%) patients. In the unadjusted model, the number of organs involved (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.23 to 1.63) and involvement of the lymph nodes (OR 3.87, 95% CI 2.19 to 6.86), lungs (OR 3.81, 95% CI 2.10 to 6.89), pancreas (OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.001 to 2.76), liver (OR 2.73, 95% CI 1.17 to 6.36) and kidneys (OR 2.48, 95% CI 1.47 to 4.18) were each associated with hypocomplementaemia. After adjusting for age, sex and number of organs involved, only lymph node (OR 2.59, 95% CI 1.36 to 4.91) and lung (OR 2.56, 95% CI 1.35 to 4.89) involvement remained associated with hypocomplementaemia while the association with renal involvement was attenuated (OR 1.6, 95% CI 0.92 to 2.98). Fibrotic disease manifestations (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.21 to 0.87) and lacrimal gland involvement (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.28 to 0.999) were inversely associated with hypocomplementaemia in the adjusted analysis. Hypocomplementaemia was associated with higher concentrations of all IgG subclasses and IgE (all p<0.05). After adjusting for serum IgG1 and IgG3, only IgG1 but not IgG4 remained strongly associated with hypocomplementaemia. CONCLUSIONS: Hypocomplementaemia in IgG4-RD is not unique to patients with renal involvement and may reflect the extent of disease. IgG1 independently correlates with hypocomplementaemia in IgG4-RD, but IgG4 does not. Complement activation is likely involved in IgG4-RD pathophysiology.
