Asian small-clawed otters (ASCO; Aonyx cinereus) are a popular species of otter housed in zoological institutions. A common health challenge in this species is the development of uroliths, which may have a dietary origin. Feeding recommendations for ASCO are largely based on the nutrient requirements of domestic carnivore models. Using otter-specific feeding ecology may allow for further refinement of these nutrient recommendations. This study aimed to assess if a naturalistic diet of crustaceans, mollusks, and fish could control the development of uroliths in ASCO. Baseline data were collected on 10 ASCO (five males and five females) of different ages and repeated 2 years after the treatment diet was introduced. Blood and urine parameters, as well as the size of nephroliths based on radiographic images, were recorded. The treatment diet was higher in protein and lower in calcium than the nontreatment diet and did not contain any kibble. During the 2-year treatment trial, blood globulin, glucose, and sodium increased and albumin decreased. Glucosuria and leukocyturia significantly decreased. There were no significant changes in urolith size over the 2 years, and animals without nephroliths at the beginning of the study remained urolith free. The development of nephroliths was significantly reduced during the treatment compared with the year prior. Although interpretation is limited by the methods used, a naturalist diet may have a beneficial impact in the development of uroliths in ASCO.

Elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) is a major cause of death in Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) calves. A 2-year, 11-month-old female, captive Asian elephant presented with facial edema and a mild fever. Blood samples were collected and showed EEHV1A positivity with a high viral load by real time PCR. Heterophil toxicity also was reported for the first time in this case. The calf was treated orally with acyclovir, 45 mg/kg tid for 28 days, which reduced the EEHV1A viral load to undetectable levels within 9 days and the calf survived. A successful outcome with oral acyclovir administration provides another and affordable option to treat EEHV hemorrhagic disease in Asian elephants, and one that is easier to administer in untrained calves.

In January 2016, a 20-year-old female oriental small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) from Night Safari in Singapore was euthanized and diagnosed with a thyroid gland carcinoma. Postmortem examination and histology also revealed metastasis to the regional lymph nodes and severe visceral pentastomiasis. Grossly, the lymph nodes were infested, and encapsulation was observed on the visceral serosal surface. Histopathologically, the lymph nodes were encysted by a thick fibrous connective capsule with minimal inflammatory response. Pentastomiasis has been previously reported in the smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) in Malaysia. This report is the first case of severe visceral pentastomiasis in an oriental small-clawed otter with functional thyroid carcinoma.
