RESUMO

Aim: Twenty compounds of 6-nitro-4-substituted quinazolines were synthesized.Materials & methods: The new derivatives were evaluated for their epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitory activity. The most potent derivatives were assessed for their cytotoxicity against colon cancer and lung cancer cells, in addition to normal fibroblast cells.Results & discussion: compound 6c showed a superior to nearly equal cytotoxicity in comparison to gefitinib, it also revealed a good safety profile. Compound 6c caused a cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase in addition to induction of apoptosis. A molecular docking study was conducted on the most active compounds to gain insights of their binding mode in the active site of EGFR enzyme besides ADME prediction of their physicochemical properties and drug likeness profile.

RESUMO

LSM-83177, a phenoxy acetic acid derivative, is a small molecule reported for its promising anti-tumor properties. Via inhibiting the interaction between MDM2 and p53, LSM-83177 can elevate the active p53 levels within cells, thereby promoting apoptosis and inhibiting tumor growth. Also, LSM-83177 has been shown to inhibit GST activity in colorectal cancer HT29 cells. In the current work, novel LSM-83177 hydrazone analogs 5a-f, 7a-b, 10a-e, and 13a-b have been designed according to the structure features of LSM-83177 and their binding mode in the active site of MDM2. The anti-cancer activity of the newly synthesized analogs is evaluated against the HT29 cell line. The most potent compounds, 7a and 10a, showed IC50 = 12.48 and 10.44 µg/ml, respectively, when compared with Cisplatin (IC50 = 11.32 µg/ml) as a reference drug. Compounds 7a and 10a were introduced for further inspection for p53-MDM2 protein-protein interaction, where they displayed IC50 values of 3.65 and 11.08 µg/ml, respectively. Furthermore, hydrazones 7a and 10a increased the p-53 expression levels by 3.22- and 4.25-fold, respectively; in addition, they effectively reduced the GST expression levels in HT29 cancer cells with 0.56- and 0.30-fold increments in comparison to the untreated control.

Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy are highly susceptible to infections owing to their compromised immune system, which also promotes cancer progression through inflammation. Thus, this study aimed to develop novel chemotherapeutic agents with both anticancer and antimicrobial properties. A series of diarylurea derivatives based on pyridazinone scaffolds were designed, synthesized, and characterized as surrogates for sorafenib. The synthesized compounds were tested for their antimicrobial activity and screened against 60 cancer cell lines at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Compound 10h exhibited potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 16 µg mL-1), whereas compound 8g showed significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans (MIC = 16 µg mL-1). Additionally, ten compounds were further evaluated for VEGFR-2 inhibition, with compound 17a showing the best inhibitory activity. Compounds 8f, 10l, and 17a demonstrated significant anticancer activity against melanoma, NSCLC, prostate cancer, and colon cancer, with growth inhibition percentages (GI%) ranging from 62.21% to 100.14%. Compounds 10l and 17a were selected for five-dose screening, displaying GI50 values of 1.66-100 µM. Compound 10l induced G0-G1 phase cell cycle arrest in the A549/ATCC cell line, increasing the cell population from 85.41% to 90.86%. Gene expression analysis showed that compound 10l upregulated pro-apoptotic genes p53 and Bax and downregulated the anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2. Molecular docking studies provided insights into the binding modes of the compounds to the VEGFR-2 enzyme. In conclusion, the pyridazinone-based diarylurea derivatives developed in this study show promise as dual-function antimicrobial and anticancer agents, warranting further investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Inappropriate visits (IVs) and overcrowded emergency departments (EDs) can result in many complications for patients and medical staff. This study aimed to assess the incidence, associated factors, and predictive factors of IVs to ED. METHODS: This retrospective cohort single-center study was conducted in the ED of King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. All ED visits in February 2023 were included. They were considered appropriate if the patient required investigation tests, underwent a procedure, was admitted to an inpatient ward, was admitted to the short-stay unit, was referred for follow-up at a specialist outpatient clinic after discharge from the ED, or was referred to the ED of another hospital. Failure to have at least one of these factors led to the visit being considered inappropriate. RESULTS: A total of 5,429 visits were included. The incidence rate of IVs was 1128 (20.7%). Of the visits, 1,028 (18.9%) were attended by patients aged <10 years, and 2,825 (52.0%) by female patients. The most reported complaints were pulmonological in 1,029 visits (18.9%). Patients with appropriate visits (AVs) had significantly higher median BMI scores than those with IVs (25.9 (20 - 3) vs. 23.7 (16.36 - 29), P = <0.0001). Visits with pulmonological (447 (39.6%) vs. 582 (13.5%)) and otorhinolaryngologic (54 (4.7%) vs. 94 (2.1%)) complaints were significantly more likely to be inappropriate (P = <0.0001). In multiple logistic regression, being a male (OR: 1.3, CI: 1.1 - 1.5, P = <0.0001), being non-Saudi (OR: 2.7, CI: 2.0 - 3.6, P = <0.0001), and visiting on the weekend (OR: 1.1, CI: 1.0 - 1.3, P = 0.0366) were significantly predictive of the visits being inappropriate. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings revealed a high incidence of IVs in the ED, with several factors predictive of IVs. Highlighting these factors can help minimize the incidence of IVs and, therefore, improve the quality of healthcare delivered to patients in need and their clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of teprotumumab on ophthalmological and biochemical findings and assess potential genetic markers for TED responses. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. Participants were 18-76 years old. All subjects were treated with teprotumumab. The primary outcome was the change in proptosis before and after teprotumumab treatment. Secondary outcomes include change in other ophthalmic measures and thyroid laboratory tests. Human leukocyte antigens (HLA) were also analyzed as markers for response to teprotumumab. RESULTS: Twenty-six patients were included in the final analysis. There was a significant decrease in TSI and TRAb levels and significant increases in HbA1c, fasting glucose, and total T3 levels. There was also significant reduction in proptosis, clinical activity score (CAS), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell thickness (GCA), and intraocular pressure (IOP). HLA haplotypes were distinct between responders and non-responders, with HLA-DRB3*02:02:01G, HLA-DRB4*neg, and HLA-DQB1*02:01:01G demonstrating better response to teprotumumab and HLA-A*23:01:01G strongly correlating to non-response. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with both acute and chronic TED treated with teprotumumab had a significant reduction in TSI and TRAb levels and improvement in proptosis, CAS, RNFL and GCA thickness, and IOP. HLA may predict responders vs. non-responders. Further studies with longer duration and larger population comparing teprotumumab with steroids or other immunomodulatory agents (tocilizumab, rituximab, etc) may be helpful.

Customers are very concerned about high-quality products whose provenance is healthy. The identification of meat authenticity is a subject of growing concern for a variety of reasons, including religious, economic, legal, and public health. Between March and April of 2023, 150 distinct marketable beef product samples from various retailers in El-Fayoum, Egypt, were gathered. There were 30 samples of each of the following: luncheon, kofta, sausage, burger, and minced meat. Every sample underwent a histological investigation as well as subjected to a standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis to identify meat types that had not been stated by Egyptian regulations. According to the obtained data, the meat products under scrutiny contained a variety of unauthorized tissues which do not match Egyptian regulations. Furthermore, the PCR results indicated that the chicken, camels, donkeys, and pigs derivatives were detected in 60%, 30%, 16%, and 8% of examined samples, respectively. In conclusion, besides displaying a variety of illegal tissues, the majority of the meat items under examination were tainted with flesh from many species. As a result, it is crucial to regularly inspect these products before they are put on the market to ensure that they comply with the law and don't mislead customers Furthermore, it is advisable for authorities to implement rigorous oversight of food manufacturing facilities to ensure the production of safe and wholesome meat.

BACKGROUND: Badminton, a dynamic sport, demands players to display exceptional physical attributes such as agility, core stability, and reaction time. Backward walking training on a treadmill has garnered attention for its potential to enhance physical attributes and optimize performance in athletes while minimizing the risk of injuries. OBJECTIVE: By investigating the efficacy of this novel approach, we aim to provide valuable insights to optimize training regimens and contribute to the advancement of sports science in badminton. METHODOLOGY: Sixty-four participants were randomized into a control group (n = 32) and an experimental group (n = 32). The control group received routine exercise training, while the experimental group received routine exercise training along with additional backward walking training on the treadmill. Pre- and post-intervention measurements were taken for core stability using the Plank test, balance using the Star Excursion Balance test, reaction time using the 6-point footwork test, and agility using the Illinois Agility test. RESULTS: The results showed that the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in core stability (p < 0.001), balance (p < 0.001), reaction time (p < 0.05), and agility (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. The backward walking training proved to be effective in enhancing these physical attributes in badminton players. CONCLUSION: Incorporating backward walking exercises into the training regimen of badminton players may contribute to their overall performance.

BACKGROUND: Intracystic hematoma in arachnoid cyst are a very rare pathology that commonly occurs after head trauma, while spontaneous intracystic hematomas in arachnoid cyst associated with subdural hematoma is extremely rare. Currently there are 33 patients of spontaneous intracystic hematomas in arachnoid cyst reported in the literature. In this case report we present an adult patient with concomitant chronic subdural hematoma with intracystic hematoma in arachnoid cyst. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old Egyptian Arabian female patient presented to the outpatient clinic complaining of severe headache of 1-month duration that was progressive in nature. Provisionally, it was thought that it might be an arachnoid cyst with associated chronic subdural hematoma along with intracystic hematoma. Decision to proceed with craniotomy and cyst evacuation was made. CONCLUSION: Concomitant intracystic hematoma in arachnoid cyst along with subdural hematoma is a serious condition that might be life-threatening if not well managed.

Inflammation management presents a critical challenge in modern medicine, with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) being a widely used therapeutic option. However, their efficacy is often accompanied by significant gastrointestinal adverse effects, necessitating the exploration of safer alternatives, particularly through the investigation of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors. This study endeavors to address this imperative through the synthesis and evaluation of pyrazoline-phenoxyacetic acid derivatives. Among the synthesized compounds, 6a and 6c emerged as promising candidates, demonstrating potent COX-2 inhibition with IC50 values of 0.03 µM for both and selectivity index = 365.4 and 196.9, respectively. Furthermore, these compounds exhibited efficacy in mitigating formalin-induced edema in male Wistar rats, accompanied by favorable safety profiles upon histological examination of vital organs. Comprehensive safety assessments, including evaluation of creatinine, AST, and ALT enzymatic as well as troponin T and creatine kinase-MB levels, further reinforce the promising attributes of the synthetic candidates. Molecular docking studies endorsed by molecular dynamic simulations corroborate the biological findings, elucidating significant protein-ligand interactions at COX-2 active sites indicative of therapeutic potential.

We investigated selected oxylipins and related synthesizing/signaling pathways in 28 patients with Crohn's disease (CD), 19 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), and 39 controls. Plasma and mucosal PUFA/oxylipin profiles were analyzed by LC-MS/MS. mRNA expression of 5, 12 and 15-lipooxygenases, FPR2/ALXR, FFAR4/GPR120, annexin A1, and interleukin-10 were analyzed by qRT-PCR. Oxylipin profile and related metabolic pathways were altered in both CD and UC patients. The patterns were characterized by increased prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and lipoxins and overexpression of 5-lipoxygenase, FPR2/ALXR, annexin A1, and interleukin-10 genes, but decreased n-3 PUFAs and 18-hydroxyeisapentaenoic acid. The gene of 15-lipoxygenase was under-expressed mainly in UC patients. CD and UC are associated with unbalanced n-6 ​​and n-3 derivatives and pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory/pro-resolving mediators favoring the former compounds. The findings suggest that oxylipins engage in the pathophysiology of the diseases. Targeting oxylipin's metabolic pathways would be a promising therapy for inflammatory bowel diseases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Diabetes and especially insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of developing cognitive dysfunction, making anti-diabetic drugs an interesting therapeutic option for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Dual amylin and calcitonin receptor agonists (DACRAs) elicit beneficial effects on glycemic control and insulin sensitivity. However, whether DACRAs affect cognition is unknown. DESIGN AND INTERVENTION: Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats were treated with either the DACRA KBP-336 (4.5 nmol/kg Q3D), the amylin analog AM1213 (25 nmol/kg QD), or vehicle for 18 weeks. Further, the efficacy of a late KBP-336 intervention was evaluated by including a group starting treatment on day 30. Glucose control and tolerance were evaluated throughout the study and spatial learning and memory were evaluated by Morris Water Maze after 17 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: When evaluating spatial learning, rats receiving KBP-336 throughout the study performed significantly better than AM1213, vehicle, and late intervention KBP-336. Both KBP-336 and AM1213 treatments improved spatial memory compared to the vehicle. The overall performance in the cognitive tests was reflected in the treatment efficacy on glycemic control, where KBP-336 was superior to AM1213. CONCLUSION: In summary, the DACRA KBP-336 ameliorates diabetes-induced spatial learning and memory impairment in diabetic rats. Further, KBP-336 improves long-term glycemic control superior to the amylin analog AM1213. Taken together, KBP-336 is, due to its anti-diabetic and insulin-sensitizing properties, a promising candidate for the treatment of cognitive impairments.

Background and objective Butter coffee drinks, mainly a form of a saturated fat diet, are widely accepted as a "healthy energy-boosting drink", especially in the young and healthy military population. The objective of our study was to determine the effects of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil and butter on lipid profile, especially apolipoprotein B (ApoB), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (HDL-C), and other risk factors for coronary heart disease, such as BMI, BP, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in healthy adults. Materials and methods We conducted a prospective study of 60 subjects who were randomized to one of the two following regimens: (1) coffee or (2) coffee with butter plus MCT oil combination. The primary outcome was the effect on ApoB. Secondary outcomes were as follows: non-HDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerides, BP, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, and HbA1c. These parameters were evaluated at the baseline and after 12 weeks. The Mann-Whitney U test was utilized for analysis of the results. Results While 60 subjects were recruited for the study, only 41 completed it, meeting the minimum required sample size (17 per group) necessary to achieve the desired effect size: 21 males (nine in the control group and 12 in the experimental group) and 20 females (10 in each group). Anthropometric measures were similar between the two groups at baseline, and so were age and BMI (average age: 33.00 ± 5.84 years among controls and 30.86 ± 6.14 years in the experimental group; BMI: 27.35 ± 4.63 kg/m2 vs. 25.74 ± 2.70 kg/m2). The pulse rate was 69.35 ± 10.98 in the control vs. 70.68 ± 10.32 bpm in the experimental group. The waist size was also similar in both groups. Baseline lab findings were as follows: ApoB: 89.85 ± 17.52 (control), 81.60 ± 12.84 mg/dL (experimental); hs-CRP: 0.18 ± 0.27 (control), 0.17 ± 0.27 mg/L (experimental); LDL-C 113.65 ±23.71 (control), 106.50 ± 18.99 mg/dL (experimental); HDL-C 57.35 ± 14.63 (control), 62.41 ± 16.15 mg/dL (experimental); and triglycerides: 76.00 ± 31.30 (control), 56.77 ± 14.77 mg/dL (experimental), and these values were similar. The values after 12 weeks of intervention were as follows: BMI: 27.37 ± 5.24 (control), 26.36 ± 3.55 (experimental); pulse rate: 78.88 ± 14.00 (control), 74.20 ± 11.90 bpm (experimental); ApoB 87.1 ± 17.38 (control), 85.7 ±20.59 mg/dL (experimental); hs-CRP 0.26 ± 0.22 (control), 0.15 ± 0.14 mg/L (experimental); LDL-C 111.59 ± 20.35 (control), 114.10 ± 26.99 mg/dL (experimental); HDL-C 57.71 ± 12.93 (control), 64.85 ± 13.32 mg/dL (experimental); and triglycerides: 74.71 ± 25.39 (control), 60.80 ± 15.77 mg/dL (experimental). Conclusion At a significance level of 5%, there was no difference between the two groups, either at the baseline or at 12 weeks of intervention. Based on our findings, adding MCT oil and butter to coffee may be safe. However, further studies with larger sample sizes and longer duration are needed to validate our findings.

Aims: Historically, patients undergoing surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have been nursed postoperatively in a critical care (CC) setting because of the challenges posed by prone positioning, extensive exposures, prolonged operating times, significant blood loss, major intraoperative fluid shifts, cardiopulmonary complications, and difficulty in postoperative pain management. The primary aim of this paper was to determine whether a scoring system, which uses Cobb angle, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and number of levels to be fused, is a valid method of predicting the need for postoperative critical care in AIS patients who are to undergo scoliosis correction with posterior spinal fusion (PSF). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all AIS patients who had undergone PSF between January 2018 and January 2020 in a specialist tertiary spinal referral centre. All patients were assessed preoperatively in an anaesthetic clinic. Postoperative care was defined as ward-based (WB) or critical care (CC), based on the preoperative FEV1, FVC, major curve Cobb angle, and the planned number of instrumented levels. Results: Overall, 105 patients were enrolled. Their mean age was 15.5 years (11 to 25) with a mean weight of 55 kg (35 to 103). The mean Cobb angle was 68° (38° to 122°). Of these, 38 patients were preoperatively scored to receive postoperative CC. However, only 19% of the cohort (20/105) actually needed CC-level support. Based on these figures, and an average paediatric intensive care unit stay of one day before stepdown to ward-based care, the potential cost-saving on the first postoperative night for this cohort was over £20,000. There was no statistically significant difference between the Total Pathway Score (TPS), the numerical representation of the four factors being assessed, and the actual level of care received (p = 0.052) or the American Society of Anesthesiologists grade (p = 0.187). Binary logistic regression analysis of the TPS variables showed that the preoperative Cobb angle was the only variable which significantly predicted the need for critical care. Conclusion: Most patients undergoing posterior fusion surgery for AIS do not need critical care. Of the readily available preoperative measures, the Cobb angle is the only predictor of the need for higher levels of care, and has a threshold value of 74.5°.

The microbial analysis of fish is critical for ensuring overall health. Uncooked fish can serve as a conduit for transmitting several types of microbes; the current investigation sought to assess the bacterial levels in various kinds of fish from Nasser Lake, Aswan, Egypt, considered the chief source of potable water in Egypt. Two hundred and fifty fish samples, including 50 of each Oreochromis niloticus, Sander lucioperca, Lates niloticus, Clarias gariepinus, and Mormyrus kannume, from Nasser Lake, Aswan, Egypt, were collected to detect the bacterial load, isolation, and identification of Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus and their virulence genes. The findings revealed that Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus exhibited higher bacterial loads than other fish species. Incidences of bacterial contamination among examined fishes were 28.8%, 20.4%, and 16% for Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, respectively. Additionally, PCR analysis detected the presence of aerA (60%) and Act (40%) genes in A. hydrophila, rpoB (70%) and LasB (30%) genes in P. aeruginosa, and ToxR (70%) and tdh (50%) genes in V. parahaemolyticus. The study suggested that the bacterial contamination levels in Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus could be notably more significant than in other species that could potentially be harmful to the consumers, especially considering the identification of particular bacteria known to cause foodborne illnesses. Further recommendations emphasized that regular monitoring and assessments are required to preserve their quality.

To test the hypothesis that an abiotic Earth and its inert atmosphere could form chemically reactive carbon- and nitrogen-containing compounds, we designed a plasma electrochemical setup to mimic lightning-induced electrochemistry under steady-state conditions of the early Earth. Air-gap electrochemical reactions at air-water-ground interfaces lead to remarkable yields, with up to 40 moles of carbon dioxide being reduced into carbon monoxide and formic acid, and 3 moles of gaseous nitrogen being fixed into nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium ions, per mole of transmitted electrons. Interfaces enable reactants (e.g., minerals) that may have been on land, in lakes, and in oceans to participate in radical and redox reactions, leading to higher yields compared to gas-phase-only reactions. Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes could have generated high concentrations of reactive molecules locally, establishing diverse feedstocks for early life to emerge and survive globally.

This study aimed to evaluate and design masks against viruses, especially SARS-CoV-2 associated with COVID-19. A continuum filtration model was developed where the rate of particle deposition and "sticking" on the filter fibers is a critical term in the mass transfer, together with permeation velocity, filter porosity, tortuosity, and Brownian diffusion. CFD simulations of the airflow during respiration lead to the recommendation that the filter permeability should be above 4 × 10-11 m2 to direct the airflow for effectiveness against virus particles; otherwise, low filter permeabilities cause the unfiltered air to flow preferentially through the leak gaps between the mask and the headform. Different mask filters with microstructural and geometry data from the literature are assessed via filtration simulations for breathability and filtration efficiency. The results demonstrate that a surgical mask of 25% porosity, pore size of 150 µm and permeability of 4.4 × 10-11 m2 can achieve 100% minimum efficiency while demonstrating high breathability, complying with the criteria of FFP3, N95, and surgical Class II and IIR masks. Selected cotton and synthetic cloths as well as electrospun fiber layers are predicted to comply with FFP2, N95, and surgical mask Class II and IIR standards.

The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device is primarily used for treating wide-neck intracranial bifurcation aneurysms under 10 mm. Limited data exists on its efficacy for large aneurysms. We aim to assess angiographic and clinical outcomes of the WEB device in treating large versus small aneurysms. We conducted a retrospective review of the WorldWide WEB Consortium database, from 2011 to 2022, across 30 academic institutions globally. Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed to compare small and large aneurysms on baseline characteristics. A total of 898 patients were included. There was no significant difference observed in clinical presentations, smoking status, pretreatment mRS, presence of multiple aneurysms, bifurcation location, or prior treatment between the two groups. After PSM, 302 matched pairs showed significantly lower last follow-up adequate occlusion rates (81% vs 90%, p = 0.006) and higher retreatment rates (12% vs 3.6%, p < 0.001) in the large aneurysm group. These findings may inform treatment decisions and patient counseling. Future studies are needed to further explore this area.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an essential food for half of the global population and is vital in maintaining global food security. Climate change, increasing population and recent incident of COVID pandemic has generated financial burden and threaten the global food security. Due to theses factors rice cultivation also has to face significant challenges. frequent weather changes pose a considerable challenge to agricultural planning, which was previously relaying on consistent seasonal variations. In this context, rice cultivation is particularly sensitive to cold, where its development and productivity inhibited by low temperatures (< 18 °C). Developing rice varietes with low temprature tolerence and good yield potential is one of the major goals of current breeding efforts of plant scientists. For this purpose, short duration and early rice varieties are most favorable to avoid cold stress and yield more in less number of days. this study was designed to investigate the effect of low temperatures on different rice varieties. the study was designed to identify low temprature tolerent genotypes with early and regular cultivation. For this, thirty-four genotypes were evaluated in two gorwing seasons (2018-2019) with four different sowing times. Statistically sowing time showed significant interaction between all yield contributing parameters. The data indicate that exposure to low temperatures during the reproductive phase prolongs the maturation period of the crop, also length of the panicle and the fertility of the spikelets drops, resulting in a significant decrease in the production of sensitive varieties. Some varieties are more sensitive to cold stress compared to others. In the Egyptian context, Giza176, Sakha104, and Sakha107 are recommended for early cultivation, while the genotypes Giza 179, Sakha101, Sakha104, and GZ 9730-1-1-1-1 are indicated for the normal cultivation period. The Sakha104 variety is particularly notable, as it is recommended for both purposes. In addition, the data obtained in this study provide valuable information for selecting rice varieties suitable for double cropping in the North Delta of Egypt. This study also contributes to the existing literature, providing insights into the resilience of rice cultivation in the face of climate change.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring anthropometry, dietary intake, and physical activity (PA) is essential to prevent/counteract childhood obesity. This study examined dietary intake, PA, and anthropometric characteristics in young boys practicing soccer as a recreational sport. METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 226 boys aged 8 to 13 years participating in soccer as a recreational activity in football academies located in Tunis, Tunisia. Anthropometric measures allowed the calculation of body mass index, fat mass, and peak height velocity as markers of biological maturity. A three-day food record and a food frequency questionnaire estimated nutrient intake and eating habits. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to estimate the PA level of the participants. RESULTS: It was found that a high percentage of the children had excess weight (54%) and excess fat mass (47%). The total energy, carbohydrate, and saturated fat intake of the children exceeded the recommended levels by approximately 10%, 15%, and 30%, respectively. However, the intake of unsaturated fat was below the estimated requirements, particularly in obese children. In addition to the unbalanced macronutrient intake, the children also showed an insufficient intake of many essential micronutrients. Around 60% to 70% of the children in all three groups had a low intake of magnesium, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and vitamins B9, B12, and D. Moreover, 20% to 35% of the children in the three groups had an insufficient intake of vitamins A and C. Insufficient vitamin E intake was found in 63% of obese children and 35% of non-obese children. It was observed that the PA level was lower in the overweight/obese group compared to the normal-weight group (p < 0.005). More than three-quarters of overweight/obese children had low PA levels, about 20% were moderately active, and only 1 to 2% were highly active. Conversely, normal-weight children showed moderate to high PA levels. CONCLUSIONS: Poor eating behavior, an unbalanced diet, and a low PA level are prevalent in Tunisian boys practicing recreational sports. Such a combination is responsible for a disparity between energy intake and expenditure, contributing to weight excess and increased cardiometabolic risk. The study findings provide meaningful information for practitioners and authorities on applying a balanced diet and adequate PA to prevent and fight against obesity and improve cardiometabolic health in youth.

BACKGROUND: The circumstances under which pneumonectomy should be performed are controversial. This study aims to investigate national trends in pneumonectomy use to determine which patients, in what geographic areas, and under what clinical circumstances pneumonectomy is performed in the United States. METHODS: We queried the National Cancer Database and included all patients undergoing anatomic surgical resection for non-small cell lung cancer (2015-2020). The association between demographic and clinical factors and the use of pneumonectomy were investigated. RESULTS: Who: A total of 128,421 patients were identified, of whom 738 (0.6%) underwent pneumonectomy. Those patients were younger (median 65 vs 68 years, P < .001), more often male (59.9% vs 44.9%, P < .001), more likely to be below median income level (44.2% vs 38.6%, P = .002), and more likely to have lower education indicators (53% vs 48.6%, P = .02) than those who underwent other anatomic resections. Notably, there was a decreasing trend in pneumonectomy use during the study period (0.9% down to 0.4%, P < .001). Where: Patients undergoing pneumonectomy were less likely to live in metropolitan areas (77.9% vs 81.7%, P = .008) and to live closer (<12 miles) to their treating facility (45% vs 49%, P = .02). Regional geographic differences also were identified (P < .001). Why: Patients who underwent pneumonectomy were more likely to have received neoadjuvant therapy (20.6% vs 5.3%, P < .001), to be clinically N (+) (39.3% vs 12.3%, P < .001), and to have more advanced tumors (cT3-4: 46.3% vs 11.3%, P < .001). CONCLUSION: Although primarily driven by advanced oncologic features, socioeconomic and geographic factors also were associated independently with the use of pneumonectomy. Standardizing pneumonectomy indications nationwide is crucial to prevent widening outcome gaps for patients with lung cancer.
