BACKGROUND: Despite the prevalence of echogenic foci floating in the urinary bladder seen in ultrasonography in dogs, surprisingly little has been written on its significance, including its potential association with urinalysis. The objective of the study was to determine the diagnostic value of the echogenic foci floating in urinary bladders in dogs. RESULTS: - Cystosonography was performed on 45 dogs. Bladder contents were examined and divided into positive (containing echogenic particles) and negative (absent echogenic particles) groups according to the presence and absence of floating echogenic particles. Five mL of urine was collected via cystocentesis. Urine analysis and culture were done and the relationship between ultrasound evaluation and urinalysis results was investigated. In dogs with bladder echogenic particles in ultrasonography, the prevalence of hematuria, pyuria, bacteriuria, and lipiduria were 88.9%, 92.6%, 29.6%, and 70.3%, respectively. However, in dogs in which echogenic particles were not observed in their bladders, the prevalence of hematuria, pyuria, bacteriuria, and lipiduria was 77%, 50%, 5.5%, and 77%, respectively. There was a significant association between bladder debris and positive urine culture, with an odds ratio of 7.15 (95% confidence interval: 0.81-63.28) compared with matched controls. Furthermore, there was a significant relationship between the presence of floating echogenic particles with pyuria, and urine color ( p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the present results showed the detection of bladder debris on ultrasound can be a predictor for pyuria and positive urine culture in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Episodes of recurrent or severe hypoglycemia can occur in patients with diabetes mellitus, insulinoma, neonatal hypoglycemia, and medication errors. However, little is known about the short-term and long-term effects of repeated episodes of acute severe hypoglycemia on the brain, particularly in relation to hippocampal damage and cognitive dysfunction. METHODS: Thirty-six wistar rats were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. The rats were exposed to severe hypoglycemia, and assessments were conducted to evaluate oxidative stress in brain tissue, cognitive function using the Morris water maze test, as well as histopathology and immunohistochemistry studies. The clinical and histopathological evaluations were conducted in the short-term and long-term. RESULTS: The mortality rate attributed to hypoglycemia was 34%, occurring either during hypoglycemia or within 24 h after induction. Out of the 14 rats monitored for 7 to 90 days following severe/recurrent hypoglycemia, all exhibited clinical symptoms, which mostly resolved within three days after the last hypoglycemic episode, except for three rats. Despite the decrease in catalase activity in the brain, the total antioxidant capacity following severe insulin-induced hypoglycemia increased. The histopathology findings revealed that the severity of the hippocampal damage was higher compared to the brain cortex 90 days after hypoglycemia. Memory impairments with neuron loss particularly pronounced in the dentate gyrus region of the hippocampus were observed in the rats with severe hypoglycemia. Additionally, there was an increase in reactive astrocytes indicated by GFAP immunoreactivity in the brain cortex and hippocampus. CONCLUSION: Recurrent episodes of severe hypoglycemia can lead to high mortality rates, memory impairments, and severe histopathological changes in the brain. While many histopathological and clinical changes improved after three months, it seems that the vulnerability of the hippocampus and the development of sustained changes in the hippocampus were greater and more severe compared to the brain cortex following severe and recurrent hypoglycemia. Furthermore, it does not appear that oxidative stress plays a central role in neuronal damage following severe insulin-induced hypoglycemia. Further research is necessary to assess the consequences of repeated hypoglycemic episodes on sustained damage across various brain regions.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal diseases are the most frequently diagnosed problem in cats. It has been well-established that periodontal diseases could not only cause various oral health issues but could also contribute to systemic diseases. Oxidative stress is a possible link between systemic diseases and periodontitis. Our study aimed to illustrate the influence of periodontitis on oxidative stress development in cats. Furthermore, the changes in the bacterial flora of the gums were investigated. METHODS: Based on the clinical and laboratory examinations, fifty cats were divided into two groups normal (n = 25) and moderate to advanced periodontitis (n = 25). Serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), reduced (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were measured. In addition, samples were taken from the subgingival plaques of all cats for bacterial culture. RESULTS: Serum TOS, GSSG, GSSG to GSH ratio, and oxidative stress index (OSI), calculated as the ratio of TOS to TAC in cats with periodontal disease were significantly higher, and TAC was significantly lower (p < 0.05) compared with controls. The results of bacterial culture indicated that the number of isolated bacterial colonies is higher in patients than in the control group. Additionally, the analysis of these data showed a positive association between periodontal index and oxidative stress. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that periodontitis in cats is related to a main oxidative stress. Furthermore, oxidant factors such as TOS and OSI, compared to antioxidant factors, may better indicate the presence of oxidative stress conditions in patients with periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: During transportation many horses develop post-transportation infection, which can be life-threatening and end their sport career. Preventing mucus accumulation and inflammation during transportation is vital, emphasizing the need for effective strategies to enhance overall horse health welfare. OBJECTIVES: Assess the impact of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on mucus accumulation and inflammation in horses subjected to 18 hours of head confinement. ANIMALS: Six healthy crossbred horses, 5.3 ± 2.1 years of age and weighing 387 ± 30 kg. METHODS: Prospective placebo-controlled cross-over design study. The horses' heads were restrained in their stalls for a period of 18 hours. They were studied under 4 conditions: Not confined (NC): before head confinement, placebo (P), and confined head (CH): 18 hours of head confinement without treatment, and N-Acetylcysteine (NAC): 18 hours of head confinement treated with NAC before confinement (15 mg/kg/day NAC PO for 3 days). Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed in each condition. Mucus accumulation along the trachea was evaluated by endoscopy. RESULTS: Endoscopic scores were significantly different between CH and other conditions, whereas no significant differences were found among NC, P, and NAC. The BAL cell count (34 291 ± 2624 cells/µL), neutrophil and lymphocyte count (18 601 ± 3193 cells/µL and 3337.4 ± 593 cells/µL, respectively) in CH were significantly higher compared to NAC. Neutrophil percentage was significantly higher in CH (53.8 ± 8%) compared to horses that received NAC (20.08 ± 8%). Conversely, in comparison to NAC (66.33 ± 9%), the percentage of macrophages was significantly lower in CH (35.7 ± 10%). CONCLUSIONS: N-acetylcysteine was found to significantly decrease mucus accumulation and inflammatory cell counts in horses with head confinement.
