INTRODUCTION: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have surpassed infectious diseases as the leading global cause of death, with the Southeast Asian region experiencing a significant rise in NCD prevalence over the past decades. Despite the escalating burden, screening for NCDs remains at very low levels, resulting in undetected cases, premature mortality and high public healthcare costs. We investigate whether community-based NCD prevention and management programmes are an effective solution. METHODS: In Indonesia, we compare participants in the community-based NCD screening and management programme Pos Pembinaan Terpadu-Penyakit Tidak Menular with matched non-participants with respect to their uptake of screening activities, health-related behaviour and knowledge and metabolic risk factors. We use statistical matching to redress a possible selection bias (n=1669). In Viet Nam, we compare members of Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs, which were offered similar NCD health services, with members of other community groups, where such services were not offered. We can rely on two waves of data and use a double-difference approach to redress a possible selection bias and to measure the impacts of participation (n=1710). We discuss strengths and weaknesses of the two approaches in Indonesia and Viet Nam. RESULTS: In Indonesia, participants have significantly higher uptake of screening for hypertension and diabetes (+13% from a control mean of 88% (95% CI 9% to 17%); +93% from a control mean of 48% (95% CI 79% to 108%)). In both countries, participants show a higher knowledge about risk factors, symptoms and complications of NCDs (Indonesia: +0.29 SD (0.13-0.45), Viet Nam: +0.17 SD (0.03-0.30)). Yet, the improved knowledge is only partly reflected in improved health behaviour (Viet Nam: fruit consumption +0.33 SD (0.15-0.51), vegetable consumption +0.27 SD (0.04-0.50)), body mass index (BMI) (Viet Nam: BMI -0.07 SD (-0.13 to -0.00)) or metabolic risk factors (Indonesia: systolic blood pressure: -0.13 SD (-0.26 to -0.00)). CONCLUSION: Community-based NCD programmes are well suited to increase screening and to transmit health knowledge. Due to their extensive outreach within the community, they can serve as a valuable complement to the screening services provided at the primary healthcare level. RESUMO

While investigating the death of a hippopotamus at a zoo in Hanoi, Vietnam, we isolated SARS-CoV-2 and sequenced the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene from different organs. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the SARS-CoV-2 strain was closely related to 3 human SARS-CoV-2 strains in Vietnam.

RESUMO

While investigating a giraffe's death in a Vietnamese zoo, we successfully identified and isolated Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) from skin nodule biopsies and ruptured nodule wound swab samples. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate obtained in this study was closely related to the previous Vietnamese and Chinese LSDV strains from cattle. This is the first report on the genome detection and isolation of LSDV in a diseased giraffe in Vietnam. Further study is needed to better understand the epidemiology of this disease in wildlife.

Reinforced concrete bridges were visually surveyed in Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam to study the deterioration caused by internal steel corrosion under different climates, focusing on the concrete cover depth. Spalling or cracking arising from corrosion is likely where water is supplied. According to prior studies and our surveys, a concrete cover depth of more than 40 mm was found to prevent spalling, regardless of environmental conditions and structure age. Because water supply at steel is a key corrosion factor, it was hypothesised that under natural conditions, the water penetration in concrete would remain at a depth of approximately 40 mm. Our laboratory study examined water penetration under drying and wetting conditions. The results also suggested that under periodic rainfall conditions, the threshold of water penetration was not exceeded. The numerical study indicated maximum moisture evaporation to facilitate oxygen diffusion occurred at a depth of approximately 30-40 mm unless the concrete was exposed to continuous drying for more than one month. It was experimentally and numerically concluded that an adequate cover depth of greater than 40 mm could inhibit moisture and oxygen penetration at the steel, which supported the survey findings of cover depth effect on a high resistance to corrosion-induced deterioration despite an increase in service life.

This molecular dynamics (MD) simulation carries a detailed analysis of a pressure-induced structural transition supercooled liquid and amorphous silicene (a-silicene). Low-density models of supercooled liquid and a-silicene containing 10 000 atoms are obtained by rapid cooling processes from the melts. Then, an a-silicene model at T = 1000 K, a supercooled liquid model at T = 1500 K and a liquid silicon model at T = 2000 K have been isothermally compressed step by step up to a high density in order to observe the pressure-induced structural changes. Specifically 'Cairo tiling' pentagonal and square lattices of silicene are discovered in our calculations. Structural properties of those penta-silicene and tetra-silicene models have been carefully analyzed through the radial distribution functions, interatomic distances, bond-angle distributions under high-pressure condition. The dependence of pressure on formation behaviors is calculated via pressure-volume and energy-density relationships. The first order transition from low-density supercooled liquid/amorphous silicene to high-density penta-silicene and continuous transition from low-density liquid to high-density tetra-silicene are discussed. Atomic mechanism and sp3/sp2 hybridization evolution are inspected whereas the role of low-membered ring defects/boundary promises remarkable application and advanced research in future.
