Weeds cause economic losses in cropping systems, leading to the use of 1.7 million tons of herbicides worldwide for weed control annually. Once in the environment, herbicides can reach non-target organisms, causing negative impacts on the ecosystem. Herbicide retention, transport, and degradation processes determine their environmental fate and are essential to assure the safety of these molecules. Radiometric strategies using carbon-14 herbicides (14C) are suitable approaches for determining herbicide absorption, translocation, degradation, retention, and transport in soil, plants, and water. In this work, we demonstrate how 14C-herbicides can be used from different perspectives. Our work focused on herbicide-plant-environment interactions when the herbicide is applied (a) through the leaf, (b) in the soil, and (c) in the water. We also quantified the mass balance in each experiment. 14C-mesotrione foliar absorption increased with oil and adjuvant addition (5-6 % to 25-46 %), and translocation increased only with adjuvant. More than 80 % of 14C-quinclorac and 14C-indaziflam remained in the soil and cover crops species absorbed less than 20 % of the total herbicides applied. In water systems, Salvinia spp. plants removed 10-18 % of atrazine from the water. Atrazine metabolism was not influenced by the presence of the plants. The radiometric strategies used were able to quantify the fate of the herbicide in different plant systems and the mass balance varied from 70 % to 130 %. Importantly, we highlight a critical and practical view of tracking herbicides in different matrices. This technique can aid scientists to explore other pesticides as environmental contaminants.

The incidence of osteoporosis and related fractures increases significantly with age, impacting public health and associated costs. Postmenopausal osteoporosis results from increased bone resorption due to decreased estrogen levels. The endocannabinoid system, especially cannabidiol (CBD), has shown therapeutic potential in modulating bone formation. This study investigated the effects of administration of CBD in rats after the onset of with ovariectomy-induced osteopenia (OVX). Forty-eight female Sprague‒Dawley rats were divided into four groups (n = 12): OVX + CBD, SHAM + CBD, OVX + vehicle, and SHAM + vehicle. CBD was administered intraperitoneally for 3 weeks. After euthanasia, the bone quality, mechanical properties, and bone microarchitecture of the femurs and lumbar vertebrae were assessed by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), bone densitometry, mechanical tests, and histological and immunohistochemical analyses. CBD treatment improved the bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar vertebrae and increased the BV/TV% and Tb.N in the femoral neck. There were also improvements in the mechanical properties, such as the maximum force and stiffness of the femurs and vertebrae. CBD significantly increased the bone matrix in osteopenic femurs and vertebrae, Although did not significantly influence the expression of RANKL and OPG, in ovariectomized animals, there was an increase in osteoblasts and a decrease in osteoclasts. Determining the optimal timing for CBD use in relation to postovariectomy bone loss remains a crucial issue. Understanding when and how CBD can be most effective in preventing or treating bone loss is essential to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. However, further studies are needed to explore in more detail the efficacy and safety of CBD in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Objective To evaluate the interobserver agreement in the measurement of anatomical parameters of the shoulder using manual methods of two-dimensional (2D) computed tomography (CT) unformatted in the plane of the scapula and to compare them with the automated measurement obtained through the Blueprint (Wright Medical, Memphis, TN, United States) software, which uses reconstructed three-dimensional (3D) images. Methods The present is a cross-sectional study in which 2D CT images of 38 patients with different diagnoses were used. The anatomical parameters were measured by the manual methods described by Friedman et al., the glenoid vault method, the Maurer et al. method, and shoulder subluxation according to Walch et al., by five independent qualified surgeons and compared with the parameters obtained through the Blueprint automated software. Results Significant differences were found between the manual measurement version obtained through the Friedman et al. method and the automated version. The mean values found for inclination did not show statistically significant differences among the methods. The mean value found for subluxation showed significant differences between the average observed in the analyses performed by the automated method and those performed by the surgeons. Conclusion The manual measurements of glenoid version and inclination performed by experienced surgeons are effective, and the vault method is superior to the Friedman et al. method in the analysis of severe glenoid deformities.

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the availability (in terms of stock and composition) and accessibility (in terms of geographical distribution) of the nursing workforce in Brazil. METHOD: this is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection, identified by combining databases available on institutional websites and structured according to indicators from the World Health Organization's "National Health Workforce Accounts". The study considered nursing professionals at senior level (nurses) and middle level (nursing auxiliaries and technicians). Indicators of stock, composition, distribution (by age group and gender) and the ratio of nurses to doctors were included. RESULTS: there was an increase in the number of personnel between 2005 and 2010, mainly in middle and technical level professionals. There are more personnel aged between 36 and 55, with a predominance of women in all categories, despite the increase in men. There was an uneven distribution of personnel across the country's regions, with the Southeast having the largest number of professionals. The ratio of nurses to doctors is less than one in the South and Southeast. CONCLUSION: despite the large number of nurses, their distribution is uneven. The growth of nursing technicians has significantly outstripped that of nurses, indicating more intensive technical training policies than those found in higher education.

UV radiation causes long- and short-term skin damage, such as erythema and skin cancer. Therefore, the use of sunscreens is extremely important. However, concerns about UV filter safety have prompted exploration into alternative solutions, with nanotechnology emerging as a promising avenue. This systematic review identified 23 experimental studies utilizing nanocarriers to encapsulate sunscreens with the aim of enhancing their efficacy and safety. Polymeric and lipid nanoparticles are frequently employed to encapsulate both organic and inorganic UV filters along with natural antioxidants. Nanocarriers have demonstrated benefits including reduced active ingredient usage, increased sun protection factor, and mitigated photoinstability. Notably, they also decreased the skin absorption of UV filters. In summary, nanocarriers represent a viable strategy for improving sunscreen formulations, offering enhanced physicochemical properties and bolstered photoprotective effects, thereby addressing concerns regarding UV filter safety and efficacy in cosmetic applications.

The growing demand for alternative sources of non-animal proteins has stimulated research in this area. Mushrooms show potential in the innovation of plant-based food products. In this study, the aim was to develop prototype fish fillets analogues from Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms applying enzymatic treatment (ß-glucanase and transglutaminase-TG). A Plackett-Burman 20 experimental design was used to optimize forty variables. Oat flour (OF) exerted a positive effect on the hardness and gumminess texture parameters but a negative effect on cohesiveness and resilience. Soy protein isolate (SPI) exhibited a positive effect on elasticity, gumminess and chewiness, while acacia gum had a negative effect on elasticity, cohesiveness and resilience. After sensory analysis the assay with 1% cassava starch, 5% OF, 5% SPI, 0.1% transglutaminase (240 min/5 °C), 1% coconut oil, 1% soybean oil, 0.2% sodium tripolyphosphate, 0.6% ß-glucanase (80 °C/10 min) and without ß-glucanase inactivation was found to exhibit greater similarity to fish fillet. The classes hydrocarbons, alcohols and aldehydes are the predominant ones in aromatic profile analysis by chromatography and electronic nose. It is concluded that a mushroom-based analogue of fish fillet can be prepared using enzymatic treatment with TG.

BACKGROUND: Hyperglycemic conditions is associated with more severe periodontitis and poorer outcomes after nonsurgical periodontal treatment (NPT). Then, these patients are candidates for adjunctive therapy associated with NPT. This study evaluates the effect of photobiomodulation (PBMT) at different wavelengths on periodontal repair in non-hyperglycemic/hyperglycemic animals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-four rats were submitted to induction of periodontitis by ligatures. Hyperglycemia was induced in half of these animals, whereas the other half remained non-hyperglycemic. The animals were subdivided into 4 groups according to the PBMT protocol applied at the time of ligature removal (n = 8): CTR: Without PBMT; IRL: PBMT with infrared laser (808 nm); RL: PBMT with red laser (660 nm); and RL-IRL: PBMT with red (660 nm) and infrared laser (808 nm). After a period of 7 days, the animals were euthanized. The parameters assessed by microtomography were the bone volume relative to total tissue volume (BV/TV%), distance from the cemento-enamel junction to the top of the bone crest (CEJ-CB), trabecular thickness, space between trabeculae, and number of trabeculae. Additionally, the percentage of inflammatory cells, blood vessels, and connective tissue matrix were assessed by histomorphometric analysis. RESULTS: PBMT reduced bone loss and increased trabecular density in hyperglycemic animals (p < .05), with RL being more effective in reducing linear bone loss (CEJ-CB), whereas RL-IRL was more effective in maintaining BV/TV%. PBMT reduced blood vessels and increased the connective tissue component in hyperglycemic animals (p < .05). RL-IRL reduced inflammatory cells regardless of the systemic condition of the animal (p < .05). CONCLUSION: PBMT (RL, RL-IRL) improves the repair of periodontal tissues in hyperglycemic animals.

Passiflora cincinnata is a Passifloraceae typical of the Caatinga, a biome unique to Brazil. It has various pharmacological properties associated with its high flavonoid content. Vitexin, isovitexin, orientin, isoorientin and derivatives are the main chemical and pharmacological markers for this plant. Although flavonoids enriched-extracts have been widely applied in phytocosmetics, especially in sunscreen formulations, the use of P. cincinnata as a photoprotective ingredient remains unexplored. Different hydro-alcoholic extracts were prepared and their antioxidant and photoprotective activities were evaluated by in vitro assays. The most promising extract (Pc-1) was analyzed by HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS. Nine flavonoids were identified as major compounds: isovitexin-7-O-glucoside, isoorientin-2"O-hexoside, orientin, isoorientin, isovitexin-2"-O-glucoside, isovitexin-6"-O-glucoside, isoscoparin and isoquercitrin. Finally, Pc-1 (5 and 10%, v/v) was incorporated into gel formulations, alone or combined to commercial chemical filters (benzophenone-3 and octyl methoxycinnamate). Formulations containing Pc-1 showed high SPFspectrophotometric values. When combined to commercial filters, Pc-1 (5%) potentiated their photoprotective efficacy (p<0.05). A physicochemical characterization indicated no incompatibility or signs of instability after extract incorporation. Altogether, these findings encourage the use of Pc-1 as a photoprotective ingredient or co-adjuvant in sunscreens formulations.

BACKGROUND: Sleep is a fundamental and complex physiological process whose duration decreases and characteristics change with age. Around 50 % of children will experience sleep disturbances at some point in their early life. Sleep disturbances can result in a number of deleterious consequences, including alterations in the levels of cellular senescence (CS) markers. CS is a complex process essential for homeostasis characterized by the irreversible loss of cell proliferation capacity; however, the accumulation of senescent cells can lead to age-related diseases. OBJECTIVE: In this review, our objective was to gather information about the relationship between sleep duration, sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and cellular senescence markers, namely: oxidative stress, inflammation, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and growth hormone (GH) in newborns, children, and teenagers. METHODS: To achieve this, we searched six databases: MEDLINE, Scopus, LILACS, Web of Science, Embase, and SciELO, and identified 20 articles that met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Our results show that better sleep quality and duration and, both the surgical and non-surgical treatment of sleep disorders are associated with a reduction in oxidative stress, inflammation, and telomeric attrition levels. Furthermore, our results also show that surgical treatment for SDB significantly reduced the levels of cellular senescence markers. Further studies need to be conducted in this area, particularly longitudinal studies, for a greater understanding of the mechanisms involved in the relationship between sleep and senescence. CONCLUSION: Better sleep quality and duration were associated with less oxidative stress, inflammation, and telomeric attrition and a higher level of IGF-1 in children and teenagers.

Studies have shown that deficiencies in magnesium, selenium, and zinc in individuals with obesity compromise the endogenous antioxidant defense system. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of mineral deficiency on enzymatic antioxidant defense in women with obesity. The study involved 63 women with obesity (BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2) and 77 eutrophic women (BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2). Variables such as fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, fasting insulin, and serum lipids were analyzed. Insulin resistance was measured using the homeostasis assessment model (HOMA-IR) and beta cell function using the homeostasis assessment model (HOMA-ß). Dietary intake of energy, macronutrients (including magnesium, zinc, and selenium), and plasma, erythrocyte, and urinary concentrations of these minerals were measured and analyzed. Serum cortisol, plasma leptin, plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, and the activity of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and erythrocyte catalase were also analyzed. Women with obesity had reduced plasma and erythrocyte concentrations and greater urinary excretion of all minerals compared to normal weight women (p < 0.05). There was a positive association between erythrocyte concentrations of zinc and selenium and the activity of the GPX and SOD enzymes in erythrocytes in women with obesity (p < 0.05), in addition to a positive association between serum insulin and the enzyme GPX, which is dependent on dietary selenium (p < 0.05). Individuals with obesity are deficient in magnesium, selenium, and zinc, which appears to impair the antioxidant defense system and contribute to important metabolic disorders such as oxidative stress in these patients.

Mixed Reality is a technology that has gained attention due to its unique capabilities for accessing and visualizing information. When integrated with voice control mechanisms, gestures and even iris movement, it becomes a valuable tool for medicine. These features are particularly appealing for the operating room and surgical learning, where access to information and freedom of hand operation are fundamental. This study examines the most significant research on mixed reality in the operating room over the past five years, to identify the trends, use cases, its applications and limitations. A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines to answer the research questions established using the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparator and Outcome) framework. Although implementation of Mixed Reality applications in the operations room presents some challenges, when used appropriately, it can yield remarkable results. It can make learning easier, flatten the learning curve for several procedures, and facilitate various aspects of the surgical processes. The articles' conclusions highlight the potential benefits of these innovations in surgical practice while acknowledging the challenges that must be addressed. Technical complexity, equipment costs, and steep learning curves present significant obstacles to the widespread adoption of Mixed Reality and computer-assisted evaluation. The need for more flexible approaches and comprehensive studies is underscored by the specificity of procedures and limited samples sizes. The integration of imaging modalities and innovative functionalities holds promise for clinical applications. However, it is important to consider issues related to usability, bias, and statistical analyses. Mixed Reality offers significant benefits, but there are still open challenges such as ergonomic issues, limited field of view, and battery autonomy that must be addressed to ensure widespread acceptance.

PURPOSE: Bioactive molecules are relevant to fight cancer and associated conditions. Quinoxaline is a privileged N-heterocycle, notably as anticancer agents. Herein, we report the evaluation of the quinoxaline derivatives DEQX and OAQX as anticancer agents, as well as in function of their anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. METHODS: Quinoxalines were synthesized and tested as anticancer agents based on cell viability and Annexin V-FITC apoptosis. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated from mouse carrageenan peritonitis and levels of interleukin (IL)-1ß and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alfa for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Hot-plate and acetic acid-induced writing test were employed to investigate analgesia. RESULTS: Both reduced the Ht-29 cell viability in a dependent-concentration manner (p < 0.001). Total apoptosis was detected for cells treated with 12.5 and 25 µg/mL of both the compounds for 24 and 48 h (all doses, p < 0.0001). DEQX (all doses, p < 0.01) and OAQX (all doses, p < 0.001) acted in leukocyte migration and decreased the IL-1ß and TNF-ß levels (p < 0.05). DEQX (all doses, p < 0.05) and OAQX (5mg/kg, p < 0.001) showed peripheral analgesic effect. CONCLUSIONS: In-vitro and in-vivo results suggest that these quinoxalines are promising for application in pharmacological area due to their anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and peripheric analgesia.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies show that cognitive impairment is more prevalent in older patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). However, whether this is the result of several years of a chronic disease or specific age-related changes is still unclear. Therefore, we aim to assess the outcomes in both classic and social cognition in late-onset MS (LOMS) and compare them to adult-onset MS (AOMS) when accounting for age and disease duration. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a group of 27 LOMS patients (age of disease onset >50 years) was compared with patients with AOMS (age of disease onset between 18 and 50 years). Patients with AOMS were grouped based on age (AOAMS, n = 27) and on disease duration (AODMS, n = 27) in order that these variables are matched with LOMS. Their cognitive performance was evaluated using the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) and the Revised "Reading the Mind in the Eyes" Test (RMET). Clinical and demographic variables were collected and analysed. RESULTS: In general, both classic and social cognitive performance was inferior in the LOMS group when accounting for age and disease duration. We found a statistically significant negative correlation between age of disease onset and performance in all cognitive domains except for verbal memory. The presence of at least one vascular risk factor (VRF) was associated with slower information-processing speed (SDMT) (p = 0.006) and poorer RMET performance (p = 0.020). DISCUSSION: A later age of MS is associated with worse cognitive functioning possibly due to the loss of neuroplasticity in an already aged brain. CONCLUSION: Patients with LOMS have worse cognitive outcomes than AOMS in both classic and social domains, especially when associated with the presence of VRF. Hence, health care providers and patients should not undervalue the importance of cognitive stimulating activities, management of VFR and socialization in this specific group of patients.

The aim was to analyse and improve the Primary Health Care (PHC) response to domestic violence against women (DVAW) by developing, implementing and evaluating an intervention. A pilot study evaluating the before and after of intervention implementation, using mixed methods and carried out in three phases - formative, intervention and evaluation - between August 2017 and March 2019 in two Basic Health Units (UBS) in the city of São Paulo. In this paper, we present the details and evaluation of the intervention, carried out six to twelve months after its implementation. The intervention was developed based on the findings of the formative phase and in line with the health policy that establishes the Violence Prevention Nucleus (NPV) and consisted of stablishing a care pathway; general training for all workers and specific training for the NPV; drawing up educational material and monthly case discussions over 6 months. The evaluation showed acceptability among the workers, increased identification and repertoire for caring for cases of DVAW, strengthening internal referral and the intersectoral network. We identified obstacles to the full implementation and sustainability of the intervention.


O objetivo foi analisar e aprimorar a resposta da Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS) ao cuidado dos casos de violência doméstica contra a mulher (VDCM), desenvolvendo, implementando e avaliando uma intervenção. Pesquisa piloto de avaliação do antes e depois da implementação de uma intervenção, utilizando métodos mistos e realizada em três fases - linha de base, intervenção e avaliação - entre agosto/2017 e março/2019 em duas Unidades Básicas de Saúde (UBS) do Município de São Paulo. Apresentamos neste artigo o detalhamento e a avaliação da intervenção, realizada 6-12 meses após implementação. A intervenção foi desenvolvida com base nos achados da primeira fase e em consonância com a política de saúde que estabelece os Núcleos de Prevenção à Violência (NPV), consistindo em: elaboração de fluxo assistencial; capacitação geral para todos os trabalhadores e específica para o NPV; elaboração de material educativo e discussões mensais de caso durante 6 meses. A avaliação mostrou aceitabilidade entre os trabalhadores, aumentou a identificação e repertório para o cuidado dos casos de VDCM, fortalecendo o encaminhamento interno e à rede intersetorial. Identificamos obstáculos para plena implementação e sustentabilidade da intervenção.

Priming enables plants to respond more promptly, minimise damage, and survive subsequent stress events. Here, we aimed to assess the efficacy of priming and cross-priming in mitigating the stress caused by waterlogging and/or dehydration in soybeans (Glycine max ). Soybean plants were cultivated in a greenhouse in plastic pots in which soil moisture was maintained at pot capacity through irrigation. The first stress was applied in plants at the vegetative stage for 5days and involved either dehydration or waterlogging, depending on the treatment. Subsequently, the plants were irrigated or drained and maintained at pot capacity until the second stress. For the second stress, the conditions were repeated in plants at the reproductive stage. We then evaluated the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), lipid peroxidation, total soluble sugars (TSS), amino acids, proline, and starch, and the activity of antioxidant, fermentative, and aminotransferase enzymes. Under waterlogging and dehydration, priming and cross-priming significantly increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the levels of TSS, amino acids, and proline while reducing H2 O2 concentration and lipid peroxidation. Under waterlogging, priming suppressed fermentative activity and increased carbohydrate content. This demonstrates that soybean plants activate their defence systems more promptly when subjected to priming.

Sepsis is a potentially fatal clinical condition that results from an immune imbalance in the host during an infection. It presents systemic alterations due to excessive activation of pro-inflammatory mediators that contribute to inflammation, formation of reactive species, and tissue damage. Anti-inflammatory mediators are then extensively activated to regulate this process, leading to immune exhaustion and, consequently, immunosuppression of the host. Considering the biological activities of the nutraceutical Agaricus brasiliensis (A. brasiliensis), such as immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and antitumor activities, the present study investigated the therapeutic potential of the lipid fraction of A. brasiliensis (LF) in a model of lethal sepsis in mice (Mus musculus), induced by cecal ligation and perforation (CLP). The results showed that treatment of septic animals with LF or LF associated with ertapenem (LF-Erta) reduced systemic inflammation, promoting improvement in clinical parameters and increased survival. The data show a reduction in pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, regulation of the anti-inflammatory response and oxidizing agents, and increased bacterial clearance in the peritoneal cavity and liver. Thus, it can be concluded that LF as a treatment, and in conjunction with antibiotic therapy, has shown promising effects as a hepatoprotective, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory agent.

Urine is an organic fluid produced by the kidney, and its analysis is one of the most requested laboratory tests by clinicians. The ionic composition of urine has been shown to be a good health indicator: it is useful for the diagnosis of several diseases, as well as monitoring therapeutics. This review considers laboratorial techniques that have been used throughout time for the quantification of ions in urine, and also considers some methodologies that can potentially be used in clinical laboratories for this kind of analysis. Those methods include gravimetry, titration, flame emission spectrophotometry (flame photometry), fluorimetry, potentiometry (ion selective electrodes), ion chromatography, electrophoresis, kinetic colorimetric tests, enzymatic colorimetric tests, flow cytometry, atomic absorption, plasma atomic emission spectrometry, and paper-based devices. Sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and magnesium are among the most important physiological ions, and their determination is frequently requested in hospitals. There have been many advances regarding the analysis of these ions in 24 h urine. However, there is still some way to go concerning the importance of intracellular ions in this type of sample as well as the use of occasional urine for monitoring these parameters.

Structural and functional alterations in the brain's reward circuitry are present in cocaine use disorder (CocUD), but their molecular underpinnings remain unclear. To investigate these mechanisms, we performed single-nuclei multiome profiling on postmortem caudate nucleus tissue from six individuals with CocUD and eight controls. We profiled 31,178 nuclei, identifying 13 cell types including D1- and D2-medium spiny neurons (MSNs) and glial cells. We observed 1,383 differentially regulated genes and 10,235 differentially accessible peaks, with alterations in MSNs and astrocytes related to neurotransmitter activity and synapse organization. Gene regulatory network analysis identified the transcription factor ZEB1 as exhibiting distinct CocUD-specific subclusters, activating downstream expression of ion- and calcium-channels in MSNs. Further, PDE10A emerged as a potential drug target, showing conserved effects in a rat model. This study highlights cell type-specific molecular alterations in CocUD and provides targets for further investigation, demonstrating the value of multi-omics approaches in addiction research.

Preservative ingredients in cosmetic formulations undertake a necessary role in the prevention of microbial contamination. In this field, there is an unmet need for natural, sustainable, and effective preservatives. Thus, the main goal of this work was to evaluate a sugarcane straw extract-based ingredient and investigate its potential as a preservative for cosmetic applications. Different ingredients were developed using several cosmetic solvents to improve the solubility of the extracted compounds. The antimicrobial activity was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. The 1,2-hexanediol was the solvent that allowed us to achieve the ingredient (20% dry extract dispersed in 25% 1,2-hexanediol in water) with the best antimicrobial performance, showing a minimum inhibitory concentration of between 5% and 3% (I). The 5% (w/v) concentration of this ingredient complied with the USP51 standards for cosmetic preservatives. Real-time (25 °C, 65% RH) and accelerated stability (40 °C, 75% RH) tests were conducted to determine the ingredient stability, and it was found that one month of storage time at room temperature would be ideal for better ingredient stability and performance in terms of composition, pH, color, and antioxidant activity.

Sepsis is among the most frequent diagnoses on admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). A systemic inflammatory response, activated by uncontrolled infection, fosters hypoperfusion and multiorgan failure and often leads to septic shock and mortality. These infections arise from a specific anatomic source, and how the infection foci influence the outcomes is unknown. All patients admitted to the ICU of Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira, between 1 January 2017 and 31 June 2023, were screened for sepsis and categorized according to their infection foci. During the study period, 1296 patients (32.2%) had sepsis on admission. Their mean age was 67.5 ± 15.3 and 58.1% were male; 73.0% had community-acquired infections. The lung was the main focus of infection. Septic shock was present in 37.9% of the patients and was associated with hospital mortality. Severe imbalances were noted in its incidence, and there was lower mortality in lung infections. The hospital-acquired infections had a slightly higher mortality but, after adjustment, this difference was non-significant. Patients with secondary bacteremia had a worse prognosis (one-year adjusted hazard ratio of 1.36, 95% confidence interval 1.06-1.74, p = 0.015), especially those with an isolated non-fermenting Gram-negative infection. Lung, skin, and skin structure infections and peritonitis had a worse prognosis, whilst urinary, biliary tract, and other intra-abdominal infections had a better one-year outcome.
