RESUMO

In an effort to investigate the link between failure mechanisms and the geometry of fractures of compacted grains materials, a detailed statistical analysis of the surfaces of fractured Fontainebleau sandstones has been achieved. The roughness of samples of different widths W is shown to be self-affine with an exponent zeta=0.46+/-0.05 over a range of length scales ranging from the grain size d up to an upper cutoff length xi approximately =0.15 W. This low zeta value is in agreement with measurements on other sandstones and on sintered materials. The probability distributions pi delta z(delta h) of the variations of height over different distances delta z>d can be collapsed onto a single Gaussian distribution with a suitable normalization and do not display multiscaling features. The roughness amplitude, as characterized by the height-height correlation over fixed distances delta z, does not depend on the sample width, implying that no anomalous scaling of the type reported for other materials is present. It is suggested, in agreement with recent theoretical work, to explain these results by the occurrence of brittle fracture (instead of damage failure in materials displaying a higher value of zeta approximately =0.8 ).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFUS) to reduce uterine artery blood flow in ewes in the postpartum period. METHODS: HIFUS was applied to the uterine arteries of seven ewes in the postpartum period. Arterial flow velocities were measured before and after the procedure at the site of HIFUS application (target), as well as 3 cm upstream and 3 cm downstream from the target. The uterine arteries were then removed for macroscopic and histological examination. RESULTS: Maximum flow velocities in the target area increased after the procedure by 350% and those upstream from the target decreased by 65%. Macroscopically, the vessel diameter was shown to have reduced at the site of HIFUS application. Microscopically, both the endothelium and media showed thermal lesions. Tissues surrounding the arteries were macroscopically and microscopically normal. CONCLUSION: Exposure of uterine arteries to HIFUS reduces the vessel diameter and thus induces a dramatic increase in the maximum flow velocities within the target area. HIFUS may have a role in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage.

RESUMO

The transfer function of a fiber-optic hydrophone (FOH) is computed for various fiber core radii. The hydrophone is modeled as a rigid disk, with plane waves impinging at normal or oblique incidence. The total sound field is written as the sum of the incident field and the field diffracted from the hydrophone. The diffracted field is approximated by the field generated by a vibrating planar piston in an infinite rigid baffle. For normal incidence and a pointlike fiber core, an analytical solution is presented. For finite fiber core radii, and for oblique incidence, the transfer functions are computed numerically. The calculated transfer functions exhibit an oscillatory frequency dependency that is most pronounced for small fiber cores. The solution for a core radius of 2.5 microm can be very well approximated by the analytical solution for a pointlike core at frequencies of up to 30 MHz. The results for normal incidence can be directly employed to deconvolute ultrasonic pressure signals measured with an FOH. From the transfer functions for oblique incidence, the angular response of the hydrophone is calculated. The angular response obtained here differs significantly from the model commonly used for piezoelectric hydrophones. The effective hydrophone radius derived from the angular response shows a strong frequency dependency. For low frequencies, it is found to be larger than the outer fiber radius, whereas it generally lies between the outer radius and the fiber core radius for frequencies above 10 MHz.
