RESUMO

This study investigates the presence of microplastics (MPs) in seawater, sediments, and organisms along the coastal areas of Da Nang, Vietnam. The results obtained revealed MP concentrations ranging from 111 to 304 MPs/L in seawater and 2267 to 4600 MPs/kg in sediment. In organisms such as oysters, mussels, crabs, snails, and fish, MP levels ranged from 1.8 to 17.3 MPs/g (wet weight). Fiber MPs were found to be predominant across seawater, sediment, and organisms. The study identified eight, ten, and eleven types of MPs in seawater, sediment, and organisms, respectively, with Nylon, Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) being the most prevalent. Notably, MP concentrations were significantly higher in benthic organisms such as oysters, mussels, and crabs compared to fish (t-test, p < 0.05), suggesting habitat dependency. Similar concentrations, shapes, and types of MPs in seawater, sediments, and organisms demonstrate a tendency for MP accumulation in aquatic organisms within the marine environment.

RESUMO

In an effort to reduce the experimental bias involved in the analysis of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg(o)), the blank response from gold-coated adsorption tubes has been investigated using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). Our study has been compared with our recent investigation on memory effect in a cold vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CVAFS). The pattern of blank responses was quantified after loading different amounts of mercury and after different time intervals of 1, 14, and 45 days. In case of the one day interval, the result of five to six instant blank heating cycles confirmed successful liberation of mercury following the second and third blank heating cycles. The results of 14 or 45 days generally suggest that liberation of excess mercury is affected by both the initial loading amount and the length of storage time prior to analysis. We have demonstrated a possibly effective way to reduce memory effects. Some similarities of these results with those from CVAFS experiment suggests that the blank response is caused by a combination of mercury absorbed within the bulk gold and micro- and nanoparticles liberated during heating and not from coabsorbing interfering gaseous species.

RESUMO

A number of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, styrene, and o- xylene released during food decaying processes were measured from three types of decaying food samples (Kimchi (KC), fresh fish (FF), and salted fish (SF)). To begin with, all the food samples were contained in a 100-mL throwaway syringe. These samples were then analyzed sequentially for up to a 14-day period. The patterns of VOC release contrasted sharply between two types of fish (FF and SF) and KC samples. A comparison of data in terms of total VOC showed that the mean values for the two fish types were in the similar magnitude with 280 ± 579 (FF) and 504 ± 1,089 ppmC (SF), while that for KC was much lower with 16.4 ± 7.6 ppmC. There were strong variations in VOC emission patterns during the food decaying processes between fishes and KC that are characterized most sensitively by such component as styrene. The overall results of this study indicate that concentration levels of the VOCs differed significantly between the food types and with the extent of decaying levels through time.
