[Ophthalmological anaesthesia in old age; 120 cases (author's transl)]. / Anesthésie en ophtalmologie chez le vieillard. A propos de 120 cas.

AMong 149 old ophthalmological patients over 70 years old, 29 patients did not undergo a general anaesthesia. The other 120 patients underwent 148 operations under general anaesthesia. The anaesthetic techniques came from neuroleptanalgesia. The results are quite good from a surgical view/point so that now we don't to refuse old people for an ophthalmological surgery under general anaesthesia any longer.

[Pharyngolaryngeal fistula and hypopharyngeal perforation resulting from difficult tracheal intubation]. / Fistule pharyngo-laryngée et perforation hypopharyngienne après une intubation trachéale difficile.

The authors report a case of lesions of the pharyngo-oesophagolaryngeal junction following difficult intubation. On the basis of the small number of cases published in recent years, they attempt to determine those factors which may permit early diagnosis before the development of complications in order that any medical or surgical therapeutic measures applied may be fully effective.

[Practical problems and results of parenteral alimentation in 60 patients undergoing surgery for neoplasms of the esophagus]. / Problèmes pratiques et résultats de l'alimentation parentérale chez 60 opérés de néoplasmes de l'oesophage.

Sixty patients suffering from a neoplasm of the oesophagus underwent surgery. All received parenteral alimentation in an intensive care unit and its value was studied, in particular in the immediate postoperative period. Describing the technique used, together with the qualitative and quantitative nature of the products employed, the authors analyse the results obtained and in particular the effectiveness of treatment from the standpoint of protein balance and of body weight stability in these patients.

[Postoperative pulmonary complications following surgery for carcinoma of the esophagus]. / Complications pulmonaires post-opératoires de la chirurgie carcinologique de l'oesophage.

Pulmonary complications frequently occur during the postoperative period following surgery for neoplasms of the oesophagus. The aetiology varies according to the time of their onset but the clinical signs and treatment are essentially the same. The problems encountered and related either to anaesthesia, to the surgical approach to the position of the patient. It is after the third day that complication develop related at one and the same to the past history, classical in such patients, (tobacco, chronic bronchitis, alcoholism) and the ectopic position of an abdominal viscus.

[Histamine liberation in extracorporeal circulation]. / Histaminolibération au cours de la circulation extra-corporelle

Extra-corporeal circulation (E.C.C.) has been held responsible for histamine liberation incidents, essentially by a mechanical cause. In order to prove this, the authors assayed the overall histaminaemia at different times during E.C.C. in 11 patients. The results are discussed in terms of the patients' backgrounds, temperature, hematocrit, blood gases and the acid-base balance, and electrolyte balance. Histaminaemia, corrected depending on the dilution, did not show any significant variation, even in two patients who clinically had anaphylactic manifestations.

[Prevention of stress ulcer by vitamin A. Experimental study in rats]. / Prévention de l'ulcère de contrainte par la vitamine A. Etude expérimentale chez le rat

71 male rats (Whitstar strain) are submitted to restraint. 37 of them were receiving twice an injection of 10 000 I.U. of vitamin A in order to protect them against the occurence of stress ulcer. Untreated animals are used as controls. Incidence of obtained ulcer is compared with the variation of vitamin A serum concentration, classicaly decreased in stress. Analysis of individual results shows that, if parenteral administration was followed either by restitution of the initial serum concentration, or by its increase, the treatment was efficient in 64 p. 100 of the cases.
