OBJECTIVES: The present study assessed the obese adolescents' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) based on both adolescent-reported and maternal-reported questionnaires to clarify adolescent-related psychiatric factors, maternal psychiatric factors, and body mass index (BMI) percentile variables that independently affect the quality of life (QoL). METHODS: A total of 190 adolescents (120 females and 70 males) were included in the study. The impact of clinical and psychiatric factors on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory-Child Version (PedsQL-C) scores was analyzed using hierarchical linear regression methods. RESULTS: The final models showed that only the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale-Child Version major depressive disorder scores negatively predicted the physical, psychosocial, and total health scores of the PedsQL-C. The psychosocial scores of the PedsQL-P were negatively predicted by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire emotional, and Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised-Short Form (CPRS-R-S) attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) index scores. The PedsQL-P total scores were negatively predicted by the CPRS-R-S ADHD index scores. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate that the adolescents' psychiatric symptoms and BMI percentile played a significant role in the PedsQL subscale functioning of obese adolescents compared to maternal psychiatric symptoms.

Sleep disorders have been widely reported in obese individuals. Previous studies have shown that together with an increase in obesity prevalence, so does sleep duration in children and adolescents decrease. By contributing to energy imbalances, hormonal changes occurring with reduced sleep quality may cause weight gain and obesity. Current evidence shows that short sleep duration has effects on body weight and weight gain. Compared to individuals sleeping for a normal duration, insulin sensitivity is lower in those who sleep less. Lack of sleep increases the desire for food and has a direct effect on physical activity. Further studies are required to determine the contribution of sufficient sleep to obesity treatment.

BACKGROUND: In adult studies, obese subjects with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have been shown to have poor sperm quality, and lower testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels. The aim of this study was to investigate the pubertal status and gonadal functions in obese boys with NAFLD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 119 obese and 78 nonobese age-matched adolescents. The obese boys were separated into two groups based on the presence (NAFLD group) or absence of liver steatosis with high transaminases (non-NAFLD group). The levels of serum AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone), inhibin B, gonadotropins, total testosterone, lipids, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, fasting glucose, insulin levels, and aortic intima media thickness were measured in all subjects. RESULTS: Of the total 197 children, 174 had reached puberty. There were no significant differences between the groups in respect of testicular sizes and the prevalence of pubertal status among the groups (84.3% of NAFLD vs. 70.6% of non-NAFLD vs. 98.7% of control subjects). No significant differences were found in respect of gonadotropins and AMH levels. Total testosterone levels in the NAFLD group were significantly lower than those of the non-NAFLD obese group (P < 0.001) and the control group (P < 0.001). Inhibin B levels were also significantly lower in all (NAFLD and non-NAFLD) obese groups compared to the control group (P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study demonstrated that diminished testosterone and inhibin B levels occur in pubertal obese boys with NAFLD. No significant differences were detected according to pubertal status, AMH levels, and testicular volumes in the age-matched groups.

Objective: A comprehensive survey was conducted to evaluate the shortcomings of clinical care in patients with Turner syndrome (TS) in Turkey. Methods: A structured questionnaire prepared by the Turner study group in Turkey, which covered relevant aspects of patient care in TS was sent to 44 pediatric endocrinology centers. Results: Eighteen centers (41%) responded to the questionnaire. In the majority of the centers, diagnostic genetic testing, screening for Y chromosomal material, protocols regarding the timing and posology of growth hormone (GH) and estrogen, thrombophilia screening, fertility information and screening for glucose intolerance, thyroid, and coeliac diseases in patients with TS were in line with the current consensus. Thirteen centers (72.2%) performed GH stimulation tests. Only four centers (22.2%) used oxandrolone in patients with TS with very short stature. The majority of the centers relied on bone age and breast development to assess estrogen adequacy, though together with variable combinations of oestrogen surrogates. Two centers (11.1%) reported performing serum estradiol measurements. Eight centers (44.4%) routinely conducted cardiac/thoracic aorta magnetic resonance imaging. Screening for hearing, dental and ophthalmologic problems were performed by thirteen (72.2%), six (33.3%) and ten (55.6%) centers, respectively. Psychiatric assessments were made by four centers (22.2%) at diagnosis, with only one center (5.6%) requiring annual reassessments. Conclusion: Although we found some conformity between the current consensus and practice of the participating centers in Turkey regarding TS, further improvements are mandatory in the multi-disciplinary approach to address co-morbidities, which if unrecognized, may be associated with reduced quality of life and even mortality.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity may reduce sertoli cell functions in men. The aim of the study was to investigate antimullerian hormone (AMH) and inhibin B levels (sertoli cell markers) in obese boys and their relations to cardiovascular risk factors such as insulin sensitivity index, aortic intima media thickness (aIMT) and high sensitive c-reactive protein (hsCRP). PATIENTS, METHODS: 121 obese and 38 healthy lean adolescents were included in the study. Serum AMH, inhibin B, gonadotropins, total testosterone, lipids, hsCRP, glucose and insulin levels were detected and analyzed. Insulin resistance was analyzed using the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). aIMT was measured by high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography. RESULTS: Serum AMH, inhibin B and total testosterone levels were lower in the obese adolescents (p=0.01, p=0.009 and p=0.002, respectively). aIMT measurements (p<0.001, 0.63±0.09 and 0.47±0.06 mm, respectively) and hsCRP levels (p<0.001, 2.5±0.4 and 0.66±0.69 mg/L, respectively) were significantly increased in the obese group. Obese with IR group had decreased AMH levels (p=0.02, 53.0±20.5 and 66.7±19.5 ng/mL, respectively) and increased triglycerides, HOMA-IR, aIMT measurements than non-IR obese group. AMH levels were correlated negatively with body mass index (r:-0.108, p=0.03), HOMA-IR (r:-0.358, p=0.003) and fasting insulin levels (r:-0.389, p=0.001) in obese group with IR. CONCLUSION: We found that concentrations of both sertoli cell markers (AMH and inhibin B) were significantly lower in obese pubertal boys especially in obese with IR. Obesity and IR might be important factors for the sertoli cell impairment in pubertal boys.

BACKGROUND: To examine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among schoolchildren in our region and to compare the results with previous studies conducted in the same region in 2005 and 2009. METHODS: This study was conducted at seven primary and three high schools in the center of the province of Isparta, Turkey in 2014, randomly selected for two studies of obesity five and nine years previously. Students were weighed and measured, and BMI was calculated. The results were then compared with those from 2005 and 2009. RESULTS: The study consisted of 7116 students, 3445 (48.4%) females, and with a mean age of 11.7±2.7 yr (range 5.8-18.9 yr). The prevalence of overweight was 13.6% and that of obesity 9.9%. When the data were compared with the 2005 and 2009 studies, a statistically significant increase was determined in the prevalence of overweight (X2 = 4.826, P=0.0280 and X2 =19.012, P<0.0001). The prevalence of obesity in the 2005 and 2009 studies was 11.6% and 12.5%, compared to 9.9% this study. The decrease observed in this study was statistically significant (X2=8.720, P=0.0031 and X2=20.708, P<0.0001). The total prevalence's of overweight and obesity combined were 23.8%, 23.5% and 23.5% for 2005, 2009 and 2014, respectively. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of combined overweight and obesity was stable over the nine years, but there was significant increase in the prevalence of overweight. Population-based preventive strategies, therefore, need to be maintained and intensified.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Excess visceral fat accumulation results in altered release of adipokines. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between new adipokines (omentin-1 and vaspin), insulin resistance, and serum inflammatory markers in obese subjects with metabolic syndrome (MS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 121 obese children (79 females and 42 males, aged 12-17 years old). The obese subjects were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of MS criteria (MS group and non-MS group). Serum omentin-1, vaspin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured in addition to the other glucose metabolism parameters. RESULTS: MS was diagnosed in 45 obese children and 76 children did not meet the MS criteria. Serum omentin-1 (289.5 ± 51.9 ng/mL vs. 268.2 ± 60 ng/mL, P = 0.03) levels were significantly lower in the MS group compared to the non-MS group. Serum vaspin levels (1058.3 ± 118 pg/mL vs. 1178.6 ± 158 pg/mL, P = 0.02) were higher in the MS group than the non-MS group. CRP levels correlated well with both the adipokines (r = -0.236, P = 0.04 for omentin-1 and r = 0.296, P = 0.008 for vaspin), although these adipokines did not show statistically significant correlations with fasting glucose-insulin levels, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, and 2 hr postload glucose level. CONCLUSIONS: Higher vaspin and lower omentin-1 levels were determined in obese MS children compared to non-MS children and these adipokines were significantly correlated with high CRP values. These data support the view that adipokines in MS children contribute to increased inflammation markers before abnormal glucose metabolism.

OBJECTIVE: Adult epidemiological studies suggest that the rate of Restless Legs syndrome (RLS) in the general population may range from 5% to 15%. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of RLS in a community sample of obese adolescents aged 10-16 years and to assess the association with sleep quality and health-related glucose metabolism markers. METHODS: The study group comprised 144 obese and overweight children aged 10-16 yearsand the control group consisted of 66 age-matched healthy children. The RLS Questionnaire devised by the International RLS Study and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), where a score >5 indicates poor sleep quality, was used to assess sleep quality. RESULTS: Mean body mass index (BMI) of the overweight/obese and control groups were 30.5±0.5 and 18.7±0.2, respectively. The frequency of RLS was higher in the obese group (21.7%) than the overweight (3.4%) and control (1.5%) (p<0.001) groups. The frequency of a poor PSQI score was significantly higher (p<0.001) in the obese group (37.3%) than the control group (24.2%). The obese with RLS group also had poorer sleep quality scores than the non-RLS obese group. Many symptoms of sleep disruption were more common in obese patients with RLS and RLS was independently correlated with a high PSQI score [odds ratio (OR): 2.25, confidence interval (Cl): 0.96-5.28, p<0.001)] and an increased BMI z-score (OR: 8.87, Cl: 2.04-38.61, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: RLS is common in obese children and may be associated with altered sleep quality. Obese children with RLS need to be assessed since they may need support to improve their sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: P-wave dispersion is a new and simple electrocardiographic marker that has been reported to be associated with inhomogeneous and discontinuous propagation of sinus impulses. In the present study, we evaluated P-wave dispersion in obese adolescents and investigated the relationship between P-wave dispersion, cardiovascular risk factors, and echocardiographic parameters. METHODS: We carried out a case-control study comparing 150 obese adolescents and 50 healthy controls. Maximum and minimum P-wave durations were measured using a 12-lead surface electrocardiogram, and P-wave dispersion was calculated as the difference between these two measures. Echocardiographic examination was also performed for each subject. Multivariate linear regression analysis with stepwise variable selection was used to evaluate parameters associated with increased P-wave dispersion in obese subjects. RESULTS: Maximum P-wave duration and P-wave dispersion were significantly higher in obese adolescents than control subjects (143±19 ms versus 117±20 ms and 49±15 ms versus 29±9 ms, p<0.0001 for both). P-wave dispersion was positively correlated with body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, total cholesterol, serum levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and insulin, homoeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance score, left ventricular mass, and left atrial dimension. P-wave dispersion was negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. By multiple stepwise regression analysis, left atrial dimension (ß: 0.252, p=0.008) and homoeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (ß: 0.205; p=0.009) were independently associated with increased P-wave dispersion in obese adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: Insulin resistance is a significant, independent predictor of P-wave dispersion in obese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Iodine is a part of thyroid hormones and has been reported to act directly as an antioxidant or induce indirectly antioxidant enzymes. This study aimed to assess the urinary iodine concentration and its relationship between the antioxidant and oxidative stress capacity in healthy school-aged children. METHODS: In total, 196 students from five primary schools, randomly selected between 9 and 12 years (mean age: 10.2±1.2 years), were enrolled in the study. Urinary iodine levels were measured by spectrophotometry with the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction. Total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS) were analysed from urine samples. The ratio of TOS to TAS was regarded as an oxidative stress index (OSI), an indicator of the degree of oxidative status. RESULTS: Fifty-four percentage (107) of the children had iodine deficiency (ID) and the majority of them (30%) had mild ID. There was no severe-ID child in the population (<20 µg/L). Urine TAS levels were significantly lower in the moderate-ID group than in the mild-ID group (6.5±4.1 vs. 11.3±4.1 mmol, p<0.001) and the iodine-sufficient group (11.0±5.3 µmol, p<0.001). TOS levels and OSI were found higher in the moderate-ID group than in the mild-ID group (4.8±2.1 vs. 3.7±2.1 µmol, p<0.001) and the iodine-sufficient group (4.8±2.1 vs. 3.4±2.5 mmol, p<0.001). In the moderate-ID group, low urine iodine levels exhibited significant negative correlations with OSI (r=-0.660) and TOS (r=-0.248) and a positive correlation with TAS (r=0.475). CONCLUSIONS: We found that children with moderate ID were exposed to more oxidative burden than children with mild ID or iodine sufficiency. Increased systemic oxidative stress induced by moderate ID could cause development of ID-related complications and diseases. Iodine supplementation could have a beneficial role in the prevention of oxidative stress.

AIM: We aimed to investigate the ovarian function and reserve in euthyroid adolescents (TSH < 2.5 mIU/L) diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT). METHODS: This case-control study included 30 adolescent girls (mean age 15.1 ± 1.4 years) newly diagnosed as HT with presence of high thyroid antibodies with gland heterogeneity in ultrasound and age-matched 30 healthy female subjects. Anti-ovarian antibody (AOAb), LH/FSH ratio, estradiol, anti-mullerian hormone (AMH), inhibin-B, total testosterone, antral follicle count, ovarian volumes and uterine length were measured. The clinical, laboratory, and ultrasound data of the HT and control groups were compared. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the girls with HT and healthy controls in relation to LH/FSH ratio, estradiol and inhibin-B levels. AOAb (p = 0.02), AMH (p = 0.007) and total testosterone levels were higher in HT group than the control group (p = 0.03). AOAb level was found to be positively correlated with LH/FSH ratio (p = 0.03), AMH (p = 0.01) and inhibin-B (p < 0.001) in HT group. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the adolescent girls diagnosed with autoimmune thyroiditis had normal ovarian reserve based on measurements of AMH, inhibin B, FSH, LH/FSH ratio, estradiol and antral follicle counts.

BACKGROUND: Sclerostin is a glycoprotein produced by osteocytes that is being evaluated as a potential clinical marker of bone turnover. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between neonatal vitamin D status and levels of circulating sclerostin. METHODS: Forty newborns were recruited for the study. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D] concentration <20 ng/mL and the newborns were divided into two groups as vitamin D deficient and vitamin D sufficient groups. Calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase and sclerostin were measured at birth. RESULTS: Newborns with vitamin D deficiency had markedly lower 25(OH)D levels than vitamin D sufficient newborns (8.5±4.4 ng/mL vs. 35.3±10.6 ng/mL, p<0.001). Vitamin D deficient infants also had significantly lower serum sclerostin levels (188.4±21.9 vs. 282.3±30.4 pg/mL; p: 0.026) than vitamin D sufficient newborns at birth. However, we did not detect a significant linear association between neonatal sclerostin and maternal/neonatal 25(OH)D levels. CONCLUSIONS: Our data also demonstrated that vitamin D deficient newborns exhibited lower sclerostin levels than vitamin D sufficient newborns. The low sclerostin level might serve as a marker of decreased osteocyte activity in newborns with vitamin D deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the cognitive status of children with subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) before and after L-thyroxine (L-T4) treatment using event-related potentials (ERPs) and neuropsychological tests. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on a series of 20 children with mild SH (free T4 normal and thyroid-stimulating hormone level within 5-10 µIU/L) who underwent clinical and cognitive assessment before L-T4 treatment and 6 months afterwards. The recordings of ERPs were done at the time of diagnosis and after 6 months of euthyroid state. Neuropsychiatric tests for attention, perception, close and remote memory were performed on all patients and on the control group which consisted of 20 healthy children of normal intelligence. RESULTS: While pretreatment verbal memory (VM) and verbal recall (VR) scores of the SH group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p=0.004 and 0.012, respectively), no significant differences between the post-treatment and control groups were found in these scores after 6 months of L-T4 treatment. Post-treatment VM and VR scores were significantly higher than the pretreatment scores in the SH group (p=0.008 and p=0.0001). There were no significant differences between the pre-and post-treatment values of electrophysiological evaluation in N1, P2, P3 latencies or P3 amplitude (p>0.05), although there was a significant decrease in N2 latency in the post-treatment group (p=0.03). CONCLUSION: SH affects cognition in children and L-T4 replacement therapy leads to normalization of cognitive functions. Neuropsychological tests can be used as complementary measures in the evaluation of children with SH. Determining the association between ERPs and SH would contribute to the comprehensive evaluation of these children.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) treatment in obese children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: One hundred and eight obese (body mass index (BMI) >95th percentile for age and sex) adolescents with NAFLD were included in the study. Mean age of the subjects was 13.8 ± 3.9 years (9-17 yrs). The diagnosis of NAFLD was based on the presence of liver steatosis with high transaminases. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 (PUFA group, n=52) received a 1000 mg dose of PUFA once daily for 12 months and lifestyle intervention. Group 2 (placebo group, n=56) received a recommended diet plus placebo and lifestyle intervention for 12 months. Insulin resistance was evaluated by homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) from fasting samples. RESULTS: BMI, fasting insulin levels and HOMA-IR values in both groups decreased significantly at the end of the study. In group 1, 67.8% of the patients had a decrease from baseline in the prevalence of steatosis (p<0.001). Frequency of elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels (39.2% to 14.2%; p<0.01) and elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels (25% to 17.8%; p=0.01) decreased significantly in the PUFA group. Following a 12-month diet plus placebo and lifestyle intervention treatment, 40.3% (21) of the patients in the placebo group also showed a decrease in frequency of steatosis (p=0.04) and slight decreases in frequency of elevated ALT levels (38.4% to 28.8%; p=0.01) and AST levels (30.7% to 28.8%; p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that n-3 PUFA treatment is safe and efficacious in obese children with NAFLD and can improve ultrasonographic findings and the elevated transaminase levels.

AIM: Sclerostin inhibits osteoblast functions, differentiations, and survival rates. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between circulating sclerostin (an emerging biomarker and important regulator of bone formation) and neonatal parameters in mothers with vitamin D deficiency. METHOD: Forty-five mothers and their newborns were recruited in the study. The mothers were divided into 2 groups as vitamin D-deficient group 25(OH)D (25-hydroxyvitamin D3 < 20 ng/mL) and vitamin D-sufficient group 25(OH)D (>20 ng/mL). Their newborns had measurements of weight, height, calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, sclerostin, and 25(OH)D at birth. RESULTS: The mothers with vitamin D deficiency had significantly lower vitamin D levels than the mothers with vitamin D sufficiency (8.7 [3.4] ng/mL vs 26.7 [4.0] ng/mL, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences between women with vitamin D deficiency and women with vitamin D sufficiency for sclerostin concentrations (205.4 [64.8] pg/mL vs 291.6 [122.9] pg/mL). However, 25(OH)D (10.1 [8.1] ng/mL vs 33.4 [11.6] ng/mL, P < 0.001) and sclerostin concentrations (182.9 [15.3] pg/mL vs 288.8 [32.3] pg/mL, P = 0.01) were lower in newborns born by mothers with vitamin D deficiency compared and with newborns of mothers with vitamin D sufficiency. Circulating sclerostin measurements were not associated with 25(OH)D levels of both mothers and their newborns. CONCLUSIONS: We found significantly lower sclerostin levels in newborns born by women with vitamin D deficiency compared with newborns of nondeficient mothers.

The most significant adverse effect of inhaled steroid administration in children is suppression of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responsiveness and suppression of growth. This study evaluates the effects of inhaled corticosteroids on the growth plates in infant rats. Rats aged 10 days were divided into five groups. Low and high doses of budesonide and fluticasone propionate (50-200-250 mcg/day) were applied with a modified spacer for 10 days. The rat's tibias were then removed and the effects of the steroids on the growth plates were compared. Growth cartilage chondrocyte proliferation and apoptosis rates; IGF-1 and glucocorticoid receptor levels; and resting, proliferative, hypertrophic, and total zone (TZ) measurements were compared using immunohistochemical-staining methods. With high doses of fluticasone, growth plates were affected much more than with high doses of budesonide (p = 0.01). Fluticasone, particularly at a dose of 250 mcg, inhibited the growth plate with an intensive negative impact on all parameters.

PURPOSE: Corticosteroids are under suspicion of playing an important role in the development of retinopathy. We aimed to determine peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) in children being treated with inhaled fluticasone propionate due to asthma. METHODS: Thirty-eight children diagnosed with allergic asthma (mean age 9.8 ± 2.8 years, age range 6-13 years) and 40 age-similar controls were enrolled in this study. All children with asthma were taking inhaled fluticasone propionate at a dosage of 250 µg or more per day for at least 1 year. The RNFL thickness measurements were performed using Cirrus HD spectral-domain OCT 400. Central subfield thickness, cube average thickness, and cube volume were also measured. RESULTS: Among the 38 children with asthma and 40 healthy subjects who completed follow-up, children with asthma had similar mean peripapillary RNFL thicknesses compared with control children. The mean central subfield thickness was significantly higher than that of controls (248.8 ± 23.4 vs 237.5 ± 23.5, p<0.037). There was a positive linear relationship between cube average thickness and eosinophil count with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.336 (p<0.039) and a negative correlation was found between central subfield thickness and disease duration (r = -0.385, p = 0.017) in children with asthma. CONCLUSIONS: Asthmatic children have similar peripapillary RNFL measurements compared to controls on spectral-domain OCT. Raised eosinophil counts in asthmatic children were found to be significantly associated with cube average thickness.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of acanthosis nigricans (AN) on depression symptoms, related quality of life and self-esteem scores in obese adolescent girls. METHODS: Fifty-nine obese adolescent girls (mean age: 13.19±1.3 years, age range: 12-17 years, mean body mass index: 29.89±3.30) were enrolled in this study. The obese adolescent girls were divided into two groups based on presence or absence of AN. Non-obese healthy adolescents constituted the control group (30 girls, mean age: 13.5±1.4 years). All subjects were evaluated using the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAI-C), and the modified Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES). Higher scores indicated more severe depression and anxiety, as well as low self-esteem status. RESULTS: The AN and non-AN obese groups showed significantly higher CDI, STAI-C and SES scores than the control group, and the two obese groups demonstrated no significant differences for these scores. The AN obese group with higher total testosterone levels (>50 ng/dL) had higher scores for SES (2.55±1.8 vs. 1.42±1.2; p=0.03) than the AN obese group with low total testosterone levels. SES scores significantly correlated with total testosterone levels (r=0.362; p=0.03) and fasting insulin (r=0.462; p=0.03) in the AN obese group. CONCLUSION: Higher SES scores (low self-esteem status) were determined in obese adolescents with acanthosis and were related to hyperandrogenism. This study also showed that a high testosterone level may be one of the important indicators of low self-esteem status in obese girls with AN.
