RESUMO

Type Ia supernovae are cosmic distance indicators1,2, and the main source of iron in the Universe3,4, but their formation paths are still debated. Several dozen supersoft X-ray sources, in which a white dwarf accretes hydrogen-rich matter from a non-degenerate donor star, have been observed5 and suggested as Type Ia supernovae progenitors6-9. However, observational evidence for hydrogen, which is expected to be stripped off the donor star during the supernova explosion10, is lacking. Helium-accreting white dwarfs, which would circumvent this problem, have been predicted for more than 30 years (refs. 7,11,12), including their appearance as supersoft X-ray sources, but have so far escaped detection. Here we report a supersoft X-ray source with an accretion disk whose optical spectrum is completely dominated by helium, suggesting that the donor star is hydrogen-free. We interpret the luminous and supersoft X-rays as resulting from helium burning near the surface of the accreting white dwarf. The properties of our system provide evidence for extended pathways towards Chandrasekhar-mass explosions based on helium accretion, in particular for stable burning in white dwarfs at lower accretion rates than expected so far. This may allow us to recover the population of the sub-energetic so-called Type Iax supernovae, up to 30% of all Type Ia supernovae13, within this scenario.

Introduction Selumetinib (AZD6244, ARRY-142886) is a potent inhibitor of MEK1/2, thereby inhibiting phosphorylation of ERK2. We investigated the toxicity and the recommended phase II dose of the combination of selumetinib with two platinum based first line chemotherapy combinations in non-small cell lung cancer. Methods This was a phase I trial of escalating doses of selumetinib with carboplatin (AUC 6), paclitaxel (200 mg/m2) (cohort 1) or pemetrexed (500 mg/m2) and cisplatin (75 mg/m2) (cohort 2) in patients with chemotherapy naïve, advanced or metastatic NSCLC. Patients enrolled on cohort 2 had non-squamous histology. Dose escalation of selumetinib proceeded using a 3 + 3 design: 50 mg b.i.d. days 2-19 (dose level 1); 75 mg b.i.d. days 2-19 (dose level 2); and 75 mg b.i.d. continuously. Adverse events were evaluated using CTC AE v4 and response by RECIST 1.1. Results Thirty-nine patients were enrolled (cohort 1 n = 16; cohort 2, n = 23). There were no dose limiting toxicities in either cohort and the recommended phase II dose for both regimens was standard doses of carboplatin, paclitaxel or pemetrexed and cisplatin with continuous selumetinib at a dose of 75 mg b.i.d. Most adverse events were grade 1 or 2 and were predominantly diarrhea, nausea, stomatitis, peripheral edema, neutropenia, and skin rash. Response rate was 37.5% for cohort 1 and 30.4% for cohort 2. Conclusion Selumetinib at a dose of 75 mg b.i.d continuously can be safely combined with paclitaxel and carboplatin or pemetrexed and cisplatin in patients with advanced or metastatic NSCLC. This trial provided the dose for the regimens used in a randomized phase II trial in NSCLC (CCTG IND.219).

AIM: To compare selected physicochemical and biological properties of an experimental sealer with those of two commercially available sealers. METHODOLOGY: AH Plus and EasySeal were used as model materials for commercially available amine-epoxide sealers. They were mixed as stated by the manufacturer. The two components of experimental sealer EvoSeal A were mixed 1 : 1 vol%. The setting time was determined in two different ways: first, by setting of sealers in a temperature- and moisture-controlled environment followed by testing with a Gilmore needle and secondly, by oscillating measurements of setting behaviour using a rheometer. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the sealer was performed for comparison of thermal properties. Flow and film thickness were determined by applying pressures of 100 g and 15.3 kg, respectively, on the materials between two glass plates and measuring the diameters of the compressed sealer and the thickness with a micrometer gauge. Solubility of set materials was conducted by layering the samples with water, storing in a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment and evaporating the solvent. The solved sealer parts were then weighed. The radiopacity was measured in an X-ray experiment comparing radiopacity of a cured sealer to an aluminium step wedge. Volume shrinkage was defined by measuring the densities of samples before and after setting. The film thickness, fluidity, curing time, radiopacity and solubility of the test materials were performed as specified in DIN EN ISO 6876:2010 draft. The volume shrinkage was determined in a method adapted from standard DIN 13907:2007-01. Antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive Streptococcus oralis cultures in a contact test based on standard ISO 22196:2011 (E). Statistical analysis was performed using Mann-Whitney U-test where applicable. Significant differences were determined with P < 0.05. RESULTS: The experimental sealer, EvoSeal A, reached standard specifications. In terms of film thickness, the highest value was measured for EvoSeal A with a film thickness of 27 µm, comparing to 6 µm for EasySeal (P ≤ 0.001) and 8 µm for AH Plus (P ≤ 0.001). Comparing the flow, all values corresponded to EasySeal with a diameter of 17.3 mm. The only significant difference was determined for AH Plus compared to EvoSeal A (P = 0.0353). Volume shrinkage of EvoSeal A was 48% smaller compared to EasySeal and approximately 20% lower compared to AH Plus. The shortest curing time was determined for EvoSeal A (3.0 h) followed by EasySeal (4.1 h) and AH Plus (24 h). For all groups, significant differences were observed (P ≤ 0.001). EvoSeal A had a significantly higher radiopacity than EasySeal (P ≤ 0.001) but significantly lower values than AH Plus (P ≤ 0.001). The solubility of AH Plus and EvoSeal A was <0.5% (P = 0.2435). Compared to EasySeal with a solubility of 2.7%, significant differences were observed (P ≤ 0.02). Three weeks after setting, EasySeal and EvoSeal A still had an antibacterial effect against S. oralis in contrast to AH Plus. In this respect, comparing AH Plus with EvoSeal A and EasySeal, respectively, significant differences were observed (P ≤ 0.001). No significant differences between EasySeal with EvoSeal A (P = 0.540) were determined. CONCLUSIONS: The physical and chemical properties of the experimental sealer EvoSeal A were comparable to the two commercially established sealers EasySeal and AH Plus.

Using routine data from three clinics offering care to survivors of sexual violence (SV) in Monrovia, Liberia, we describe the characteristics of SV survivors and the pattern of SV and discuss how the current approach could be better adapted to meet survivors' needs. There were 1500 survivors seeking SV care between January 2008 and December 2009. Most survivors were women (98%) and median age was 13 years (Interquartile range: 9-17 years). Sexual aggression occurred during day-to-day activities in 822 (55%) cases and in the survivor's home in 552 (37%) cases. The perpetrator was a known civilian in 1037 (69%) SV events. Only 619 (41%) survivors sought care within 72 h. The current approach could be improved by: effectively addressing the psychosocial needs of child survivors, reaching male survivors, targeting the perpetrators in awareness and advocacy campaigns and reducing delays in seeking care.

We conducted a study among patients with tuberculosis (TB) attending two health facilities-a hospital and a slum health centre-in Nairobi, in order to: (a) assess adherence to anti-TB treatment; and (b) identify reasons for non-adherence. Urine Isoniazid (INH), used as a proxy for overall adherence, was detected in 142 (97% {95% CI 92-99}) of the 147 patients involved in the study. Five patients had no INH detected in urine and had run out of pills within the previous three days. The reasons included: not having enough pills to last until the appointment date (1); delays due to work or family reasons (2); needing to seek money for transport (1); and losing some pills (1). Anti-TB treatment adherence is high, and this is reassuring information as Kenya plans to change to a superior first-line regimen based on rifampicin throughout the course of anti-TB treatment. Providing patients with a three-day "excess stock" of pills would provide a "safety net" for continued treatment.

For many animals, including humans, the optic flow generated on the eyes during locomotion is an important source of information about self-motion and the structure of the environment. The blowfly has been used frequently as a model system for experimental analysis of optic flow processing at the microcircuit level. Here, we describe a model of the computational mechanisms implemented by these circuits in the blowfly motion vision pathway. Although this model was originally proposed based on simple experimenter-designed stimuli, we show that it is also capable to quantitatively predict the responses to the complex dynamic stimuli a blowfly encounters in free flight. In particular, the model visual system exploits the active saccadic gaze and flight strategy of blowflies in a similar way, as does its neuronal counterpart. The model circuit extracts information about translation velocity in the intersaccadic intervals and thus, indirectly, about the three-dimensional layout of the environment. By stepwise dissection of the model circuit, we determine which of its components are essential for these remarkable features. When accounting for the responses to complex natural stimuli, the model is much more robust against parameter changes than when explaining the neuronal responses to simple experimenter-defined stimuli. In contrast to conclusions drawn from experiments with simple stimuli, optimization of the parameter set for different segments of natural optic flow stimuli do not indicate pronounced adaptational changes of these parameters during long-lasting stimulation.

The yield for the multistrange Xi(-) hyperon has been measured in 6A GeV Au+Au collisions via reconstruction of its decay products pi(-) and Lambda, the latter also being reconstructed from its daughter tracks of pi(-) and p. The measurement is rather close to the threshold for Xi(-) production and therefore provides an important test of model predictions. The measured yield for Xi(-) and Lambda are compared for several centralities. In central collisions the Xi(-) yield is found to be in excellent agreement with statistical and transport model predictions, suggesting that multistrange hadron production approaches chemical equilibrium in high baryon density nuclear matter.

Source images are extracted from two-particle correlations constructed from strange and nonstrange hadrons produced in 6A GeV Au+Au collisions. Very different source images result from pp vs p Lambda vs pi(-)pi(-) correlations. Scaling by transverse mass can describe the apparent source size ratio for p/pi(-) but not for Lambda/pi(-) or Lambda/p. These observations suggest important differences in the space-time emission histories for protons, pions, and neutral strange baryons produced in the same events.

The calorimetric and dielectric properties of Pb(5)Al(3)F(19) in the five phases stable under ambient pressure are correlated with structure for fuller characterization of each phase. The first-order transition between ferroelectric phase V and antiferroelectric phase IV at T(V,IV) = 260 (5) K exhibits a thermal hysteresis of 135 (5) K on heating, with a maximum atomic displacement Delta(xyz)(max) = 1.21 (6) A; the transition from phase IV to ferroelastic phase III at 315 (5) K is also first order but with a thermal hysteresis of 10 (5) K and Delta(xyz)(max) = 0.92 (7) A; that from phase III to paraelastic phase II at 360 (5) K is second order without hysteresis and has Delta(xyz)(max) = 0.69 (4) A; and the transition from phase II to paraelectric phase I at 670 (5) K is second or higher order, with Delta(xyz)(max) = 0.7 (4) A. The measured entropy change DeltaS at T(V,IV) agrees well with DeltaS as derived from the increased configurational energy by Stirling's approximation. For all other phase transitions, 0.5 > or = DeltaS > 0 J mol(-1) K(-1) is consistent with an entropy change caused primarily by the changes in the vibrational energy. The structure of phase III is determined both by group theoretical/normal mode analysis and by consideration of the structures of phases II, IV and V reported previously; refinement is by simultaneous Rietveld analysis of the X-ray and neutron diffraction powder profiles. The structure of prototypic phase I is predicted on the basis of the atomic arrangement in phases II, III, IV and V. The introduction of 3d electrons into the Pb(5)Al(3)F(19) lattice disturbs the structural equilibrium, the addition of 0.04% Cr(3+) causing significant changes in atomic positions and increasing T(IV,III) by approximately 15 K. Substitution of Al(3+) by 20% or more Cr(3+) eliminates the potential minima that otherwise stabilize phases IV, III and II.

RESUMO

We argue that direct experimental approaches to elucidate the architecture of higher brains may benefit from insights gained from exploring the possibilities and limits of artificial control architectures for robot systems. We present some of our recent work that has been motivated by that view and that is centered around the study of various aspects of hand actions since these are intimately linked with many higher cognitive abilities. As examples, we report on the development of a modular system for the recognition of continuous hand postures based on neural nets, the use of vision and tactile sensing for guiding prehensile movements of a multifingered hand, and the recognition and use of hand gestures for robot teaching. Regarding the issue of learning, we propose to view real-world learning from the perspective of data-mining and to focus more strongly on the imitation of observed actions instead of purely reinforcement-based exploration. As a concrete example of such an effort we report on the status of an ongoing project in our laboratory in which a robot equipped with an attention system with a neurally inspired architecture is taught actions by using hand gestures in conjunction with speech commands. We point out some of the lessons learnt from this system, and discuss how systems of this kind can contribute to the study of issues at the junction between natural and artificial cognitive systems.

We here describe the first example of the replacement of an autosome by two ring chromosomes originating from the missing chromosome, presented in a patient with a single chromosome 18 and two additional ring chromosomes. Detailed fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis revealed the chromosome 18 origin of both ring chromosomes and characterized the small and the large ring chromosome as derivatives of the short and long arm of chromosome 18, respectively. The loss of subtelomeric regions of the short and the long arm of chromosome 18 in the ring chromosomes was confirmed by FISH studies. Molecular studies showed the exclusive presence of the paternal alleles for microsatellite markers located distal to the short and long arm loci D18S843 and D18S474, respectively. This indicates the maternal origin of both rings and provides evidence for substantial deletions of the distal parts of both arms of chromosome 18 in the ring chromosomes. The dysmorphic features of the patient can be explained by these deletions in both chromosome arms, as the clinical findings partly overlap with observations in 18p- and 18q-syndrome and are similar to some cases of ring chromosome 18. Centromere misdivision is suggested as one mechanism involved in the formation of the ring chromosomes.

RESUMO

Rapidity distributions of protons from central 197Au+197Au collisions measured by the E895 Collaboration in the energy range from (2-8)A GeV at the Brookhaven AGS are presented. Longitudinal flow parameters derived using a thermal model including collective longitudinal expansion are extracted from these distributions. The results show an approximately linear increase in the longitudinal flow velocity, (L), as a function of the logarithm of beam energy.

This paper describes GREFIT (Gesture REcognition based on FInger Tips), a neural network-based system which recognizes continuous hand postures from gray-level video images (posture capturing). Our approach yields a full identification of all finger joint angles (making, however, some assumptions about joint couplings to simplify computations). This allows a full reconstruction of the three-dimensional (3-D) hand shape, using an articulated hand model with 16 segments and 20 joint angles. GREFIT uses a two-stage approach to solve this task. In the first stage, a hierarchical system of artificial neural networks (ANNs) combined with a priori knowledge locates the two-dimensional (2-D) positions of the finger tips in the image. In the second stage, the 2-D position information is transformed by an ANN into an estimate of the 3-D configuration of an articulated hand model, which is also used for visualization. This model is designed according to the dimensions and movement possibilities of a natural human hand. The virtual hand imitates the user's hand to an remarkable accuracy and can follow postures from gray scale images at a frame rate of 10 Hz.

We report a particle source imaging analysis based on two-pion correlations in high multiplicity Au+Au collisions at beam energies between 2A and 8A GeV. We apply the imaging technique introduced by Brown and Danielewicz, which allows a model-independent extraction of source functions with useful accuracy out to relative pion separations of about 20 fm. The extracted source functions have Gaussian shapes. Values of source functions at zero separation are almost constant across the energy range under study. Imaging results are found to be consistent with conventional source parameters obtained from a multidimensional Hanburg-Brown-Twiss analysis.

We establish two conditions that ensure the nondivergence of additive recurrent networks with unsaturating piecewise linear transfer functions, also called linear threshold or semilinear transfer functions. As Hahnloser, Sarpeshkar, Mahowald, Douglas, and Seung (2000) showed, networks of this type can be efficiently built in silicon and exhibit the coexistence of digital selection and analog amplification in a single circuit. To obtain this behavior, the network must be multistable and nondivergent, and our conditions allow determining the regimes where this can be achieved with maximal recurrent amplification. The first condition can be applied to nonsymmetric networks and has a simple interpretation of requiring that the strength of local inhibition match the sum over excitatory weights converging onto a neuron. The second condition is restricted to symmetric networks, but can also take into account the stabilizing effect of nonlocal inhibitory interactions. We demonstrate the application of the conditions on a simple example and the orientation-selectivity model of Ben-Yishai, Lev Bar-Or, and Sompolinsky (1995). We show that the conditions can be used to identify in their model regions of maximal orientation-selective amplification and symmetry breaking.

A neural cell detection system (NCDS) for the automatic quantitation of fluorescent lymphocytes in tissue sections is presented in this paper. The system acquires visual knowledge from a set of training cell-image patches selected by a user. The trained system evaluates an image in 2 min calculating: the number, the positions, and the phenotypes of the fluorescent cells. For validation, the NCDS learning performance was tested by cross validation on digitized images of tissue sections obtained from inherently different types of tissue: diagnostic tissue sections across the human tonsil and across an inflammatory lymphocyte infiltrate of the human skeletal muscle. The NCDS detection results were compared with detection results from biomedical experts and were visually evaluated by our most experienced biomedical expert. Although the micrographs were noisy and the fluorescent cells varied in shape and size, the NCDS detected a minimum of 95% of the cells. In contrast, the cellular counts based on visual cell recognition of the experts were inconsistent and largely unreproducible for approximately 80% of the lymphocytes present in a visual field. The data indicate that the NCDS is rapid and delivers highly reproducible results and, therefore, enables high-throughput topological screening of lymphocytes in many types of tissue, e.g., as obtained by routine diagnostic biopsy procedures. High-throughput screening with the NCDS provides the platform for the quantitative analysis of the interrelationship between tissue environment, cellular phenotype, and cellular topology.

Craniometaphyseal dysplasia (CMD) is a bone dysplasia characterized by overgrowth and sclerosis of the craniofacial bones and abnormal modeling of the metaphyses of the tubular bones. Hyperostosis and sclerosis of the skull may lead to cranial nerve compressions resulting in hearing loss and facial palsy. An autosomal dominant form of the disorder (MIM 123000) was linked to chromosome 5p15.2-p14.1 (ref. 3) within a region harboring the human homolog (ANKH) of the mouse progressive ankylosis (ank) gene. The ANK protein spans the outer cell membrane and shuttles inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), a major inhibitor of physiologic and pathologic calcification, bone mineralization and bone resorption. Here we carry out mutation analysis of ANKH, revealing six different mutations in eight of nine families. The mutations predict single amino acid substitutions, deletions or insertions. Using a helix prediction program, we propose for the ANK molecule 12 membrane-spanning helices with an alternate inside/out orientation and a central channel permitting the passage of PPi. The mutations occur at highly conserved amino acid residues presumed to be located in the cytosolic portion of the protein. Our results link the PPi channel ANK with bone formation and remodeling.

Directed flow measurements for Lambda hyperons are presented and compared to those for protons produced in the same Au+Au collisions (2A, 4A, and 6A GeV; b<5-6 fm). The measurements indicate that Lambda hyperons flow consistently in the same direction but with smaller magnitudes. A strong positive flow [for Lambdas] has been predicted in calculations which include the influence of the Lambda-nucleon potential. The experimental flow ratio Lambda/p is in qualitative agreement with expectations (approximately 2/3) from the quark counting rule at 2A GeV but is found to decrease with increasing beam energy.

We present a recurrent neural network for feature binding and sensory segmentation: the competitive-layer model (CLM). The CLM uses topographically structured competitive and cooperative interactions in a layered network to partition a set of input features into salient groups. The dynamics is formulated within a standard additive recurrent network with linear threshold neurons. Contextual relations among features are coded by pairwise compatibilities, which define an energy function to be minimized by the neural dynamics. Due to the usage of dynamical winner-take-all circuits, the model gains more flexible response properties than spin models of segmentation by exploiting amplitude information in the grouping process. We prove analytic results on the convergence and stable attractors of the CLM, which generalize earlier results on winner-take-all networks, and incorporate deterministic annealing for robustness against local minima. The piecewise linear dynamics of the CLM allows a linear eigensubspace analysis, which we use to analyze the dynamics of binding in conjunction with annealing. For the example of contour detection, we show how the CLM can integrate figure-ground segmentation and grouping into a unified model.

RESUMO

On the basis of the publications and meeting reports of the Swiss Society of Psychiatry this essay examines the relationship of Swiss psychiatry and eugenics during the time between the wars. In a democratic country Swiss psychiatry, on the one hand held a leading position in the justification of eugenic measures, on the other hand a majority of Swiss psychiatrists refused coercive measures, and in World War II disassociated from the racialist eugenics and healthpolicy that were established in NS-Germany. Thus, in difference to NS-Germany the practice of eugenic sterilizations in Switzerland wasn't regulated by any specific national law.
