INTRODUCTION: The mandible is the largest and strongest facial bone which plays a crucial role for various surgeries and diagnostic imaging. The retromolar fossa, located behind the third molar socket on each side, was observed for morphometry of anterior, medial, and posterior borders. The present study aimed to assess the retromolar fossa and the presence of retromolar foramen. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 30 dry mandibles of adult humans of unknown sex; morphometry of retromolar foramen was done using three parameters: anteriorly, laterally, and posteroinferiorly. Dimensions of the retromolar trigone were seen with notable differences between the right and left sides. RESULTS: Dimensions of the anterior border had a mean of 12.34±1.175 mm on the right side and 12.56±1.46 mm on the left side. The mean of the medial border of the trigone on the right side was 20.23±2.84 mm and on the left side was 21.48±2.57 mm. The lateral border had the mean value of 18.33±3.56 mm and 19.21±3.93 mm on the right and left sides respectively. The P-value of the medial border was found to be statistically significant (P=0.02). Retromolar foramen was observed in 60% of mandibles; six were unilateral and 12 were bilateral. These foramina were closer to the anterior border of the retromolar trigone as compared to the anterior border of the ramus and lingula of the mandibles. CONCLUSIONS: The awareness of these findings is crucial for the prevention of complications, such as neurovascular damage, during surgeries in this region. This knowledge is particularly relevant in addressing oral pathologies and extracting third molars, contributing to improved surgical outcomes and patient safety.

In lower termites, which exhibit a high degree of compound eye degradation or absence, antennae play a pivotal role in information acquisition. This comprehensive study investigates the olfactory system of Reticulitermes aculabialis, spanning five developmental stages and three castes. Initially, we characterize the structures and distribution of antennal sensilla across different developmental stages. Results demonstrate variations in sensilla types and distributions among stages, aligning with caste-specific division of labor and suggesting their involvement in environmental sensitivity detection, signal differentiation, and nestmate recognition. Subsequently, we explore the impact of antennal excision on olfactory gene expression in various caste categories through transcriptomics, homology analysis, and expression profiling. Findings reveal that olfactory genes expression is influenced by antennal excision, with outcomes varying according to caste and the extent of excision. Finally, utilizing fluorescence in situ hybridization, we precisely localize the expression sites of olfactory genes within the antennae. This research reveals the intricate and adaptable nature of the termite olfactory system, highlighting its significance in adapting to diverse ecological roles and demands of social living.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan has one of the highest burdens of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection globally. To achieve the World Health Organization's goals for HCV elimination, there is a need for substantial scale-up in testing, treatment, and a reduction in new infections. Data on the population impact of scaling up treatment is not available in Pakistan, nor is there reliable data on the incidence of infection/reinfection. This project will fill this gap by providing important empirical data on the incidence of infection (primary and reinfection) in Pakistan. Then, by using this data in epidemic models, the study will determine whether response rates achieved with affordable therapies (sofosbuvir plus daclatasvir) will be sufficient to eliminate HCV in Pakistan. METHODS: This prospective multi-centre cohort study will screen 25,000 individuals for HCV antibody (Ab) and RNA (if Ab-positive) at various centers in Pakistan- Karachi (Sindh) and Punjab, providing estimates of the disease prevalence. HCV positive patients will be treated with sofosbuvir and daclatasvir for 12-weeks, (extended to 24-weeks in those with cirrhosis) and the proportion responding to this first-line treatment estimated. Patients who test HCV Ab negative will be recalled 12 months later to test for new HCV infections, providing estimates of the incidence rate. Patients diagnosed with HCV (~ 4,000) will be treated and tested for Sustained Virological Response (SVR). Questionnaires to assess risk factors, productivity, health care usage and quality of life will be completed at both the initial screening and at 12-month follow-up, allowing mathematical modelling and economic analysis to assess the current treatment strategies. Viral resistance will be analysed and patients who have successfully completed treatment will be retested 12 months later to estimate the rate of re-infection. CONCLUSION: The HepFREEPak study will provide evidence on the efficacy of available and widely used treatment options in Pakistan. It will also provide data on the incidence rate of primary infections and re-infections. Data on incidence risk factors will allow us to model and incorporate heterogeneity of risk and how that affects screening and treatment strategies. These data will identify any gaps in current test-and-treat programs to achieve HCV elimination in Pakistan. STUDY REGISTRATION: This study was registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04943588) on June 29, 2021.

BACKGROUND: Platelet concentrates play a crucial role in transfusion medicine, aiding in the management of various medical conditions, including haemorrhage, thrombocytopenia, and platelet dysfunction. However, their storage conditions at 22° C present an optimal environment for bacterial growth, making them susceptible to contamination. Of particular concern is the transmission of microorganisms from the skin flora during the phlebotomy process, which can lead to the transfusion of contaminated platelet concentrates. Such contamination poses significant risks to patients, potentially resulting in morbidity and mortality. Determining the frequency and identifying causative organisms of bacterial contamination in platelet concentrates. METHODS: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at the Institute of Pathology and Diagnostic Medicine, Khyber Medical University, and the Regional Blood Center in Peshawar from May to October 2021, spanning a duration of six months. The study included 500 participants aged between 18 and 50 years (mean: 28.13±7.67 years. A simple convenient sampling technique was employed. Blood products underwent screening for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis, and Malaria. Leaked units were excluded from the study. Platelets were prepared using a Cryofuge and subsequently subjected to culture media. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants included in the study was 28.13±7.67 years, with an age range of 18 to 50 years. Out of the total sample size of 500, there were 483 (96.6%) male participants and 17 (3.4%) female participants. Among the collected samples, bacterial growth was observed in only 11 (2.2%) platelet concentrates. The isolated organisms were Staphylococcus epidermidis, found in 7 (1.4%) platelet concentrates, and Staphylococcus aureus, found in 4 (0.8%) platelet concentrates. CONCLUSIONS: Bacterial contamination of platelet bags is higher compared to developed countries. Therefore, implementing quality control procedures is necessary to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination in platelet concentrates. Additionally, employing enhanced skin disinfection techniques at the phlebotomy site can significantly minimize bacterial contamination.

The insect olfactory system plays pivotal roles in insect survival and reproduction through odor detection. Morphological and physiological adaptations are caste-specific and evolved independently in workers, soldiers, and reproductives in termites. However, it is unclear whether the olfactory system is involved in the division of labor in termite colonies. In the present study, the antennal sensilla of alates, workers, soldiers, nymphs, and larvae of the termite Reticulitermes aculabialis Tsai et Hwang ( Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) were investigated. Transcriptomes were used to detect olfactory genes, and differential expression levels of olfactory genes were confirmed in various castes by qRT-PCR analysis. Nine types of sensilla were identified on the antennae of R. aculabialis, and soldiers possessed all 9 types. In 89,475 assembled unigenes, we found 16 olfactory genes, including 6 chemosensory protein (CSP) and 10 odorant-binding protein (OBP) genes. These OBP genes included 8 general odorant-binding protein genes (GOBPs) and 2 pheromone-binding protein-related protein (PBP) genes. Five CSP genes were more highly expressed in alates than in workers, soldiers, larvae, and nymphs, and the expression levels of CSP6 were significantly higher in nymphs. Seven GOBP and two PBP genes exhibited significantly higher expression levels in alates, and there were no significant differences in the expression levels of GOBP2 among workers, soldiers, alates, and larvae. These results suggest that alates, as primary reproductives, have unique expression patterns of olfactory genes, which play key roles in nuptial flight, mate seeking, and new colony foundation.

Grounding on social exchange theory and using the creative process engagement as a lens, this article study investigates the influence of servant leadership on employee creativity. In addition, the research examines the role of knowledge sharing in the link between servant leadership and employee creativity. Time lag method was used to collect the data from 242 employees and 57 managers employed in Chinese publicly listed companies. The data collection was divided into two parts. The subordinates were asked to rate servant leadership, their creative process engagement behavior, and knowledge sharing. The supervisors were asked to rate their associates regarding employee creativity. According to the results, employees creative process engagement behaviors mediated servant leadership and employees' creativity. In addition, the link between servant leadership and employees' creativity was strengthened by knowledge sharing. A detailed model is also provided, highlighting the significance of leadership, work engagement, knowledge sharing in fostering employee creativity in the Asian environment.

Caste differentiation in termites is one of the most conspicuous examples of facultative polyphenism in animals. It is clear that specific cuticular formation occurs in hard exocuticles during caste differentiation. However, the developmental pattern of the soft endocuticle in the differentiation pathways of castes is unknown. To reveal whether the endocuticle is involved in caste differentiation, we compared the exocuticle and endocuticle thickness of individuals in 2 pathways (nymph line and worker line) of caste differentiation in the termite Reticulitermes aculabialis. The endocuticle protein genes were identified by transcriptome analysis and the expression patterns of these genes were confirmed in caste differentiation. We found that the endocuticle structure showed dynamic changes in 2 pathways, and the first difference in endocuticle structure occurred after larvae differentiation bifurcated into workers and nymphs. The thinning of the endocuticle was a significant event from nymphs developing into alates with the thickest exocuticle and thinnest endocuticle. The thickest endocuticle layers were found in the heads of the workers and the ultrastructure of the endocuticle in the heads was more complex than that in the thorax-abdomens. Six endocuticle protein genes were identified and annotated as endocuticle structural glycoproteins SgAbd-2, SgAbd-9, and Abd-5. The expression levels of endocuticle protein genes changed dramatically during caste development and the expression levels in neotenic reproductives (secondary reproductives) were significantly higher than those in alates (primary reproductives). These results reveal the roles of endocuticles in caste differentiation and adaptation to the environment.

OBJECTIVE: The current study was conducted to evaluate the performance and screening effectiveness of commercially available rapid screening kits in comparison with chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Pathology and Blood Transfusion Services, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, PIMS, Islamabad, from January to April 2019. A total of 10 commercially available immunochromatographic test (ICT) devices and one CLIA kit (LIAISON XL) were tested for their sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy using 100 positive and 100 negative samples each for HBV and HCV, respectively. RESULTS: The sensitivities and specificities of ICT kits for hepatitis B surface antigen were 65% and 70% (Hightop), 67% and 85% (RightSign), 62% and 73% (Wondfo), 70% and 80% (Accu-Chek), 68% and 77% (Fastep), 73% and 85% (Abon), 77% and 83% (ImmuMed), 80% and 90% (Insta-Answer), 67% and 81% (BioCheck), and 72% and 83% CTK Biotech, respectively. Similarly, the sensitivities and specificities of different ICT kits for HCV were 69% and 80% (Hightop), 76% and 83% (RightSign), 69% and 81% (Wondfo), 78% and 79% (Accu-Check), 68% and 68% (Fastep), 63% and 73% (Abon), 71% and 70% (ImmuMed), 79% and 68% (Insta-Answer), 62% and 66% (BioChek), and 69% and 78% CTK Biotech, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of Diasorin Liaison Murex assay for both HBV and HCV were found to be 100% when compared with PCR. The PPV, NPV and Accuracy were determined accordingly. CONCLUSION: Rapid testing ICT devices for both HBV and HCV available in Pakistan were found to have a variable degree of sensitivity and specificity when compared with CLIA and PCR. Comparatively expensive but quality methods are more reliable as compared to rapid devices.

The current paper contains the simultaneous analysis of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian nanofluid models. The fluid flow is achieved by considering the no-slip condition subject to a stretched cylindrical surface. The flow regime manifests with pertinent physical effects, namely temperature stratification, concentration stratification, thermal radiation, heat generation, magnetic field, dual convection and chemical reaction. The strength of fluid temperature and nanoparticles concentration adjacent to an inclined cylindrical surface is assumed to be higher than the ambient flow field. A mathematical model is developed in terms of differential equations. A self-constructed numerical algorithm is executed to report the numerical solution. The resultant annotations are illustrated through both tables and graphs. It is noticed that the Casson fluid shows significant variations with respect to the involved physical parameters as compared to the Newtonian fluid model. Moreover, the analysis is certified through comparison with the existing values in a limiting sense.

Posttraumatic hemorrhagic contusions are a common sequel of traumatic brain injuries. They occur in around 8% of all traumatic brain injuries. Spontaneous resolution of acute subdural and acute extradural hematomas, although rare, is a recognized entity, but spontaneous resolution of the hemorrhagic component of a contusion within 24 h has not been reported in the literature. We present a patient in whom the hemorrhagic component of her contusion resolved spontaneously over a period of 24 h after injury. The rarity of this case prompted us to this study.
