RESUMO

Expanded helicenes are an emerging class of helical nanocarbons composed of alternating linear and angularly fused rings, which give rise to an internal cavity and a large diameter. The latter is expected to impart exceptional chiroptical properties, but low enantiomerization free energy barriers (ΔG‡e) have largely precluded experimental interrogation of this prediction. Here, we report the syntheses of expanded helicenes containing 15, 19, and 23 rings on the inner helical circuit, using two iterations of an Ir-catalyzed, site-selective [2 + 2 + 2] reaction. This series of compounds displays a linear relationship between the number of rings and ΔG‡e. The expanded [23]-helicene, which is 7 rings longer than any known single carbohelicene and among the longest known all-carbon ladder oligomers, exhibits a ΔG‡e that is high enough (29.2 ± 0.1 kcal/mol at 100 °C in o-DCB) to halt enantiomerization at ambient temperature. This enabled the isolation of enantiopure samples displaying circular dichroism dissymmetry factors of ±0.056 at 428 nm, which are ≥1.7× larger than values for previously reported classical and expanded helicenes. Computational investigations suggest that this improved performance is the result of both the increased diameter and length of the [23]-helicene, providing guiding design principles for high dissymmetry molecular materials.

RESUMO

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a technologically important method to grow thin films with high conformality and excellent thickness control from vapor phase precursors. The development of new thermal ALD processes can be limited by precursor reactivity and stability: reaction temperature and precursor design are among the few variables available to achieve higher reactivity in gas-phase reactions, unlike in solution synthesis, where the use of solvent and/or a catalyst can promote a desired reaction. To bridge this synthesis gap between vapor-phase and solution-phase, we demonstrate the use of an ultrathin coating layer of a vapor phase-compatible solvent─an ionic liquid (IL)─on our growth substrate to perform ALD of SnO. Successful SnO deposition is achieved using tin acetylacetonate and water, a process that otherwise would require a stronger counter-reactant such as ozone. The presence of the layer of IL allows a solvent-mediated reaction mechanism to take place on the growth substrate surface. We report a growth per cycle of 0.67 Å/cycle at a deposition temperature of 100 °C in an IL comprising 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate. Characterization of the ALD films confirms the SnO film composition, and 1H and 13C NMR are used to probe the solvent-mediated ALD reaction, suggesting a solvent-mediated addition-elimination-type mechanism which breaks a C-C bond in acetylacetonate to form acetone and acetate. Density functional theory calculations show that the IL solvent is beneficial to the proposed solvent-mediated mechanism by lowering the C-C bond cleavage energetics of acetylacetonate compared to the vapor phase. A general class of ligand modification reactions for thermal ALD is thus introduced in this work.

RESUMO

Strategies to improve stretchability of polymer semiconductors, such as introducing flexible conjugation-breakers or adding flexible blocks, usually result in degraded electrical properties. In this work, we propose a concept to address this limitation, by introducing conjugated rigid fused-rings with optimized bulky side groups and maintaining a conjugated polymer backbone. Specifically, we investigated two classes of rigid fused-ring systems, namely, benzene-substituted dibenzothiopheno[6,5-b:6',5'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (Ph-DBTTT) and indacenodithiophene (IDT) systems, and identified molecules displaying optimized electrical and mechanical properties. In the IDT system, the polymer PIDT-3T-OC12-10% showed promising electrical and mechanical properties. In fully stretchable transistors, the polymer PIDT-3T-OC12-10% showed a mobility of 0.27 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 75% strain and maintained its mobility after being subjected to hundreds of stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain. Our results underscore the intimate correlation between chemical structures, mechanical properties, and charge carrier mobility for polymer semiconductors. Our described molecular design approach will help to expedite the next generation of intrinsically stretchable high-performance polymer semiconductors.

RESUMO

Here we report the synthesis of two polyhelicene frameworks consisting, from end-to-end, of 18 and 24 fused benzene rings. The latter exhibits the largest electronic circular dichroism in the visible spectrum of any molecule. These shape-persistent helical nanoribbons incorporate multiple helicenes, a class of contorted polycyclic aromatic molecules consisting of ortho-annulated rings. These conjugated, chiral molecules have interesting chemical, biological, and chiroptical properties; however, there are very few helicenes with extraordinary chiroptical response over a broad range of the visible spectrum-a key criterion for applications such as chiral optoelectronics. In this report, we show that coupling the polyhelicene framework with multiple perylene-diimide subunits elicits a significant chiroptic response. Notably, the molar circular dichroism increases faster than the absorptivity of these molecules as their helical axis lengthens. Computational analysis reveals that the greatly amplified circular dichroism arises from exciton-like interactions between the perylene-diimide and the helicene moieties. We predict that even greater chiroptic enhancement will result from further axial elongation of these nanoribbons, which can be readily enabled via the iterative synthetic method presented herein.

RESUMO

Expanded helicenes are large, structurally flexible π-frameworks that can be viewed as building blocks for more complex chiral nanocarbons. Here we report a gram-scale synthesis of an alkyne-functionalized expanded [11]helicene and its single-step transformation into two structurally and functionally distinct types of macrocyclic derivatives: (1) a figure-eight dimer via alkyne metathesis (also gram scale) and (2) two arylene-bridged expanded helicenes via Zr-mediated, formal [2+2+n] cycloadditions. The phenylene-bridged helicene displays a substantially higher enantiomerization barrier (22.1 kcal/mol) than its helicene precursor (<11.9 kcal/mol), which makes this a promising strategy to access configurationally stable expanded helicenes. In contrast, the topologically distinct figure-eight retains the configurational lability of the helicene precursor. Despite its lability in solution, this compound forms homochiral single crystals. Here, the configuration is stabilized by an intricate network of two distinct yet interconnected helical superstructures. The enantiomerization mechanisms for all new compounds were probed using density functional theory, providing insight into the flexibility of the figure-eight and guidance for future synthetic modifications in pursuit of non-racemic macrocycles.

RESUMO

We report the synthesis of a new perylene-diimide-based helical nanoribbon, which exhibits the largest molar electronic circular dichroism in the visible range of any molecule. This nanoribbon also displays a substantial increase in molar circular dichroism relative to a smaller helical analogue, even though they share a similar structure: both nanoribbons incorporate two conformationally dynamic double-[4]helicene termini and a rigid [6]helicene-based core within their helical superstructures. Using DFT and TDDFT calculations, we find that the double-[4]helicenes within both nanoribbons orient similarly in solution; as such, conformational differences do not account for the disparities in circular dichroism. Instead, our results implicate the configuration of the double-[6]helicene within the larger nanoribbon as the source of the observed chiroptical amplification.

RESUMO

We report the synthesis of a bilayer chiral nanographene incorporating a [7]helicene scaffold and two perylene-diimide (PDI) subunits. Twofold visible-light-induced oxidative cyclization of a phenanthrene framework selects for the desired PDI-helicene, despite the immense strain that distinguishes this helicene from two other accessible isomers. This strain arises from the extensive intramolecular overlap of the PDI subunits, which precludes racemization, even at elevated temperatures. Relative to a smaller homologue, this PDI-helicene exhibits amplified electronic circular dichroism. It also readily and reversibly accepts four electrons electrochemically. Modifications to the core phenanthrene subunit change the fluorescence and electrochemistry of the PDI-helicene without significantly impacting its electronic circular dichroism or UV-visible absorbance.

RESUMO

We report the synthesis and characterization of a chiral, shape-persistent, perylene-diimide-based nanoribbon. Specifically, the fusion of three perylene-diimide monomers with intervening naphthalene subunits resulted in a helical superstructure with two [6]helicene subcomponents. This π-helix-of-helicenes exhibits very intense electronic circular dichroism, including one of the largest Cotton effects ever observed in the visible range. It also displays more than an order of magnitude increase in circular dichroism for select wavelengths relative to its smaller homologue. These impressive chiroptical properties underscore the potential of this new nanoribbon architecture in the context of chiral electronic materials.

RESUMO

Molecular building blocks are designed and created for the cis- and trans-dibrominated perylenediimides. The syntheses are simple and provide these useful materials on the gram scale. To demonstrate their synthetic versatility, these building blocks were used to create new dimeric perylenediimide helixes. Two of these helical dimers are twistacenes, and one is a helicene. Crucially, each possesses regiochemically defined functionality that allows the dimer helix to be elaborated into higher oligomers. It would be very difficult to prepare these helical PDI building blocks regioselectively without the methods described.

RESUMO

We report two new helicenes derived from the double fusion of an acene with two perylene diimide (PDI) subunits. These PDI-helicene homologs exhibit very different structural and electronic properties, despite differing by only a single ring in the link between the PDI units. The shorter inter-PDI link brings the two PDI subunits closer together, and this results in the collision of their respective π-electron clouds. This collision facilitates intramolecular through-space electronic delocalization when the PDI-helicene is reduced.

RESUMO

The stability of copper-seamed C-alkylpyrogallol[4]arene hexamers with varying chain lengths in solution has been studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The progression in diameter of spherical capsules with increasing alkyl chain lengths of copper-seamed hexamers in solution suggests both robustness as well as a close correlation between the solid phase and solution phase structures.

RESUMO

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies were used to probe the stability and geometry of copper-seamed C-alkylpyrogallol[4]arene (PgC(n)Cu; n = 11, 13, 17) hexamers in solution. Novel structural features are observed at chain lengths greater than 10 in both solid and solution phase. Scattering data for the PgC(11)Cu and PgC(13)Cu in chloroform fitted as core-shell spheres with a total spherical radius of about 22.7 and 22.9 Å respectively. On the other hand, the scattering curve for the PgC(17)Cu hexamer at both 1% and 5% mass fractions in o-xylene did not fit as a discrete sphere but rather as a uniform ellipsoid. The geometric dimensions of the ellipsoid radii are 24 Å along the minor axis and 115 Å along the major axis. It is expected that an individual hexamer with heptadecyl chains would exhibit a uniform radius of ca. 24 Å. However, an approximate ratio of 1:5 between radii lengths for the minor axis and major axis is consistent with interpenetration of the heptadceyl chains of adjacent hexamers to form a single ellipsoidal assembly.
