RESUMO

Introduction: disrespect and abuse during childbirth are interactions or facility conditions that local consensus seems to be humiliating or undignified. Physical abuse, non-consented clinical care, non-confidential care, non-dignified care, discrimination, abandonment, and detention in health facilities are the recent building blocks of maternal health. The objective was to compare the magnitude of disrespect for maternity care and associated factors among mothers during the immediate postpartum period at Siltie Zone health centre and hospital. Methods: institutional based cross-sectional study design using an interview-administered questionnaire used to measure the magnitude of disrespect and abuse during childbirth in a health facility. One randomly selected hospital and six health centres from three woredas were considered. A total sample of 420 was allocated to the health facilities according to the average number of delivery services provided per month. Proportion test, percentage and frequencies were used to show the relationship between the numbers of mistreatment between hospitals and health centres. Results: the overall mistreatment during childbirth and after birth is about 99%. Mistreatment in health centres is 98% and 100% in hospitals. The two categories of disrespect and abusive care namely deny the right to information 69% in hospitals and 42% in health centres. Secondly, Non-confidential care 51% in hospitals and 31% in the health centre are frequently shared categories of mistreatment during childbirth. Conclusion: mistreatment in hospitals and health centres is the same and very high. Abandonment of care, denial of right to information and non-confidential care has a significant difference in hospital and health centre.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: recent infectious disease outbreaks like COVID-19 highlights the importance of personal protective equipments and competent professionals on public health preparedness and response in health care systems. Hence, understanding availability of personal protective equipments and training status of health professionals is very important to fill the gap of COVID-19 preparedness and response. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess availability and adequacy of personal protective equipments and health professional's training status on COVID-19 in Silte Zone, southern Ethiopia. METHODS: cross sectional study was conducted from August to October 2020 in Silte Zone. First four weredas from 13 were selected randomly. Systematic sampling technique was used to select 351 health professionals from 13 health facilities of selected weredas. RESULTS: overall, only 36.1% of the health professionals have received adequate training on COVID-19. About 30% of the health professionals had taken training on emergency plan of COVID-19, about 33% had been taught on COVID-19 treatment procedures. Majority 80.9% of the respondents indicated that personal protective equipments are inadequately available. Face masks, hand sanitizers and eye goggles were most scarce PPEs. CONCLUSION: health professionals have been at the frontlines in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, challenges remain, such as limited availability of personal protection equipments and inadequate training of healthcare professions was identified by this study. Strengthening of training on COVID-19 and making PPEs adequately available were recommended.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: pregnant women are at particular risk of folate and iron deficiency due to their increased requirements, which can be difficult to meet through diet alone. Poor adherence to the supplement makes the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women high, which is associated with increased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The objective of study was to assess magnitude of adherence to iron-folic supplements and their associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at public hospitals in the Jigjiga Town, Somali Region. METHODS: an institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted on 290 pregnant during antenatal care service in two public hospitals. Mothers were randomly selected and interviewed using questionnaires. Multiple logistic regressions used to show the effect of independent variables. RESULTS: in this study, 290 women interviewed and the response rate was 91%. Nearly 54.9% were adherent to iron folic supplementation. The odds of adherence for secondary and above educated woman was almost three times (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 2.843; 95% CI: 1.177-6.865; P=0.020) that of illiterate. The odds of adherence for more than four visit women is almost twice of less than four visits (AOR: 1.991; 95% CI: 1.098-3.610; p=0.023). Similarly, odds of adherence for knowledgeable woman about iron folate supplement were twice of ill-informed women (AOR: 2.090; 95% CI: 1.134-3.852; P=0.018). CONCLUSION: adherence to iron folic supplementation was very poor. Number of ANC visits, education of women, knowledge about iron folic supplement, history of still birth, and age were significant determinants to adherence.
