RESUMO

Understanding the mechanisms underlying vascular regeneration in the heart is crucial for developing novel therapeutic strategies for myocardial ischemia. This study investigates the contribution of bone marrow-derived cells to endothelial cell populations in the heart, and their role in cardiac function and coronary circulation following repetitive ischemia (RI). Chimeric rats were created by transplanting BM cells from GFP female rats into irradiated male recipients. After engraftment chimeras were subjected to RI for 17 days. Vascular growth was assessed from recovery of cardiac function and increases in myocardial blood flow during LAD occlusion. After sorting GFP+ BM cells from heart and bone of Control and RI rats, single-cell RNA sequencing was implemented to determine the fate of BM cells. Our in vivo RI model demonstrated an improvement in cardiac function and myocardial blood flow after 17 days of RI with increased capillary density in the rats subjected to RI compared to Controls. Single-cell RNA sequencing of bone marrow cells isolated from rats' hearts identified distinct endothelial cell (EC) subpopulations. These ECs exhibited heterogeneous gene expression profiles and were enriched for markers of capillary, artery, lymphatic, venous, and immune ECs. Furthermore, BM-derived ECs in the RI group showed an angiogenic profile, characterized by upregulated genes associated with blood vessel development and angiogenesis. This study elucidates the heterogeneity of bone marrow-derived endothelial cells in the heart and their response to repetitive ischemia, laying the groundwork for targeting specific subpopulations for therapeutic angiogenesis in myocardial ischemia.

In the context of measurement-induced entanglement phase transitions, the influence of quantum noises, which are inherent in real physical systems, is of great importance and experimental relevance. In this Letter, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the effects of both temporally uncorrelated and correlated quantum noises on entanglement generation and information protection. This investigation reveals that entanglement within the system follows q^{-1/3} scaling for both types of quantum noises, where q represents the noise probability. The scaling arises from the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang fluctuation with effective length scale L_{eff}∼q^{-1}. More importantly, the information protection timescales of the steady states are explored and shown to follow q^{-1/2} and q^{-2/3} scaling for temporally uncorrelated and correlated noises, respectively. The former scaling can be interpreted as a Hayden-Preskill protocol, while the latter is a direct consequence of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang fluctuations. We conduct extensive numerical simulations using stabilizer formalism to support the theoretical understanding. This Letter not only contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between quantum noises and measurement-induced phase transition but also provides a new perspective to understand the effects of Markovian and non-Markovian noises on quantum computation.

BACKGROUND: Slow-transmission constipation is a type of intractable constipation with unknown etiology and unclear pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The intention of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect and possible mechanism of Modified Zhizhu Pills on loperamide-induced slow transit constipation. METHODS: The effects of the Modified Zhizhu Pill were evaluated in a rat model of constipation induced by subcutaneous administration of loperamide. Fecal parameters (fecal count, fecal water content, and fecal hardness) were measured in constipated rats. The substance, target, and pathway basis of the Modified Zhizhu Pill on constipation was investigated using network pharmacology. The microflora in rats was determined. Serum neurotransmitters (acetylcholine and 5-hydroxytryptamine) were measured in rats and their relationship with the gut microbiota was assessed. RESULTS: Modified Zhizhu Pill increased the number of bowel movements and fecal water content, and decreased fecal hardness and transit time. Network pharmacological analysis showed that Modified Zhizhu Pill can target multiple constipation-related targets and pathways through multiple potential active ingredients. Modified Zhizhu Pill alleviated loperamide-induced microbiota dysbiosis. Modified Zhizhu Pill increased serum 5-hydroxytryptamine and acetylcholine. The increase in serum 5-hydroxytryptamine and acetylcholine was associated with rat gut microbiota. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that Modified Zhizhu Pill may increase intestinal motility and ultimately relieve constipation by improving microecological dysbiosis and neurotransmission.

A pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the region-specific accumulation of the amyloid-beta protein (Aß), which triggers aberrant neuronal excitability, synaptic impairment, and progressive cognitive decline. Previous works have demonstrated that Aß pathology induced aberrant elevation in the levels and excessive enzymatic hydrolysis of voltage-gated sodium channel type 2 beta subunit (Navß2) in the brain of AD models, accompanied by alteration in excitability of hippocampal neurons, synaptic deficits, and subsequently, cognitive dysfunction. However, the mechanism is unclear. In this research, by employing cell models treated with toxic Aß1-42 and AD mice, the possible effects and potential mechanisms induced by Navß2. The results reveal that Aß1-42 induces remarkable increases in Navß2 intracellular domain (Navß2-ICD) and decreases in both BDNF exons and protein levels, as well as phosphorylated tropomyosin-related kinase B (pTrkB) expression in cells and mice, coupled with cognitive impairments, synaptic deficits, and aberrant neuronal excitability. Administration with exogenous Navß2-ICD further enhances these effects induced by Aß1-42, while interfering the generation of Navß2-ICD and/or complementing BDNF neutralize the Navß2-ICD-conducted effects. Luciferase reporter assay verifies that Navß2-ICD regulates BDNF transcription and expression by targeting its promoter. Collectively, our findings partially elucidate that abnormal enzymatic hydrolysis of Navß2 induced by Aß1-42-associated AD pathology leads to intracellular Navß2-ICD overload, which may responsible to abnormal neuronal excitability, synaptic deficit, and cognition dysfunction, through its transcriptional suppression on BDNF. Therefore, this work supplies novel evidences that Navß2 plays crucial roles in the occurrence and progression of cognitive impairment of AD by transcriptional regulatory activity of its cleaved ICD.

Background: Horizontal duodenal papilla (HDP) is not an uncommon ectopic major papilla. The impact of HDP on the occurrence of pancreaticobiliary diseases remains unclear. Here, we explored the associations in patients who underwent magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent MRCP at Xijing Hospital (Xi'an, China) between January 2020 and December 2021 were eligible. Patients were divided into HDP and regular papilla (RP) according to the position of the major papilla. The primary outcome was the proportion of congenital pancreaticobiliary diseases. Results: A total of 2,194 patients were included, of whom 72 (3.3%) had HDP. Compared with the RP group (n = 2,122), the HDP group had a higher proportion of congenital pancreaticobiliary diseases, especially choledochal cyst (CC) or anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction (APBJ) (6.9% vs 1.4%, P = 0.001). More gallbladder cancer (6.9% vs 1.2%, P < 0.001) and pancreatic cysts (27.8% vs 16.3%, P = 0.01) were also identified in the HDP group. Morphologically, the HDP group had a longer extrahepatic bile duct (8.4 [7.6-9.3] cm vs 7.2 [6.5-8.1] cm, P < 0.001), and larger angles between the common bile duct-duodenum and pancreatic duct-duodenum. Multivariate analysis showed that the presence of HDP was an independent risk factor for gallbladder cancer. Conclusions: This study confirmed that HDP was not rare in patients underwent MRCP. A higher prevalence of congenital pancreaticobiliary malformations (especially CC or APBJ), gallbladder cancer and pancreatic cysts was observed in patients with HDP, as well as distinctive morphologic features.

Microbiological Rapid On-Site Evaluation (M-ROSE) is based on smear staining and microscopic observation, providing critical references for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary infectious disease. Automatic identification of pathogens is the key to improving the quality and speed of M-ROSE. Recent advancements in deep learning have yielded numerous identification algorithms and datasets. However, most studies focus on artificially cultured bacteria and lack clinical data and algorithms. Therefore, we collected Gram-stained bacteria images from lower respiratory tract specimens of patients with lung infections in Chinese PLA General Hospital obtained by M-ROSE from 2018 to 2022 and desensitized images to produce 1705 images (4,912 × 3,684 pixels). A total of 4,833 cocci and 6,991 bacilli were manually labelled and differentiated into negative and positive. In addition, we applied the detection and segmentation networks for benchmark testing. Data and benchmark algorithms we provided that may benefit the study of automated bacterial identification in clinical specimens.

Understanding the changes in the chemical compositions of dissolved trace elements from source to sink is important for determining their spatiotemporal variations and the contributions from each sub-catchment in the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna Rivers. To estimate weathering and matter transfer in these Rivers and the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (G-B-M) Estuary, we measured 15 dissolved trace element concentrations from surface and bottom water samples and exchangeable trace metals from suspended particulate matter (SPM). From December 2019 to January 2020, post-monsoon samples were collected from the upstream of the three rivers and the G-B-M Estuary. Dissolved trace elements in the Ganges and Meghna Rivers exhibited remarkable spatial variations, whereas those in the Brahmaputra River and the G-B-M Estuary were uniform. The dissolved trace elements, basic information (river length and drainage area), and physicochemical parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity) of the three rivers were inconsistent. The sample sites near urban areas and industrial centers had high concentrations of dissolved trace elements. In the G-B-M Estuary, iron and lead concentrations decreased along the salinity gradient, whereas selenium levels gradually increased, which may have been released by the SPM owing to its highly exchangeable trace metals. Compared with historical concentrations, trace elements that entered the G-B Estuary from the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers exhibited either decreased or increased metal fluxes due to additional terrigenous sources, suggesting that the inputs of trace element flux from the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers into the oceans may need to be re-evaluated. Furthermore, Fe and Pb concentrations and river fluxes in the Ganges and Changjiang have decreased in recent years. Hence, the fluxes of certain trace elements that enter the oceans from large rivers may require re-evaluation.

Doxorubicin is a frequently used chemotherapeutic agent for treating various malignancies. However, it leads to severe cardiotoxic side effects, such as heart failure, and elevates the risk of sudden cardiac death among cancer patients. While oxidative stress has been identified as the primary cause of doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, therapeutic antioxidant approaches have yielded unsatisfactory outcomes. The aim of this study is to explore the therapeutic potential of vaccarin, an active flavonoid glycoside extracted from traditional Chinese herbal agent Semen Vaccariae, in doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. We observed that vaccarin significantly ameliorates doxorubicin-induced heart dysfunction in mouse model and suppresses oxidative stress mediated cell apoptosis via specifically inhibiting the activation of p38 MAPK pathway. In vitro, we observed that vaccarin alleviates doxorubicin-induced mitochondrial membrane depolarization and ROS generation in H9c2 cell, but the p38 MAPK agonist anisomycin reverses these effects. Our findings provide a promising natural antioxidant to protect against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

Soil salinization and sodification, the primary causes of land degradation and desertification in arid and semi-arid regions, demand effective monitoring for sustainable land management. This study explores the utility of partial least square (PLS) latent variables (LVs) derived from visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy, combined with remote sensing (RS) and auxiliary variables, to predict electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium absorption ratio (SAR) in northern Xinjiang, China. Using 90 soil samples from the Karamay district, machine learning models (Random Forest, Support Vector Regression, Cubist) were tested in four scenarios. Modeling results showed that RS and Land use alone were unreliable predictors, but the addition of topographic attributes significantly improved the prediction accuracy for both EC and SAR. The incorporation of PLS LVs derived from Vis-NIR spectroscopy led to the highest performance by the Random Forest model for EC (CCC = 0.83, R2 = 0.80, nRMSE = 0.48, RPD = 2.12) and SAR (CCC = 0.78, R2 = 0.74, nRMSE = 0.58, RPD = 2.25). The variable importance analysis identified PLS LVs, certain topographic attributes (e.g., valley depth, elevation, channel network base level, diffuse insolation), and specific RS data (i.e., polarization index of VV + VH) as the most influential predictors in the study area. This study affirms the efficiency of Vis-NIR data for digital soil mapping, offering a cost-effective solution. In conclusion, the integration of proximal soil sensing techniques and highly relevant topographic attributes with the RF model has the potential to yield a reliable spatial model for mapping soil EC and SAR. This integrated approach allows for the delineation of hazardous zones, which in turn enables the consideration of best management practices and contributes to the reduction of the risk of degradation in salt-affected and sodicity-affected soils.

The title compound, C12H10N2O3, was obtained by the de-acetyl-ation reaction of 1-(6-amino-5-nitro-naphthalen-2-yl)ethanone in a concentrated sulfuric acid methanol solution. The mol-ecule comprises a naphthalene ring system bearing an acetyl group (C-3), an amino group (C-7), and a nitro group (C-8). In the crystal, the mol-ecules are assembled into a two-dimensional network by N⋯H/H⋯N and O⋯H/H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions. n-π and π-π stacking inter-actions are the dominant inter-actions in the three-dimensional crystal packing. Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that the most important contributions are from O⋯H/H⋯O (34.9%), H⋯H (33.7%), and C⋯H/H⋯C (11.0%) contacts. The energies of the frontier mol-ecular orbitals were computed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP-D3BJ/def2-TZVP level of theory and the LUMO-HOMO energy gap of the mol-ecule is 3.765 eV.

A compact spectrometer based on a mid-infrared optical sensor has been developed for high-precision and real-time measurement of water isotope ratios. The instrument uses laser absorption spectroscopy and applies the weighted Kalman filtering method to determine water isotope ratios with high precision and fast time response. The precision of the measurements is 0.41‰ for δ18O and 0.29‰ for δ17O with a 1 s time. This is much faster than the standard running average technique, which takes over 90 s to achieve the same level of precision. The successful development of this compact mid-infrared optical sensor opens up new possibilities for its future applications in atmospheric and breath gas research.

BACKGROUNDS: The efficacy of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) to treat poorly differentiated superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC) is unclear. AIMS: To exploring the efficacy and prognosis of ESD treatment poorly differentiated SESCC compared with esophagectomy. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, the data of poorly differentiated SESCC patients who received ESD or esophagectomy from Jan 2011 to Jan 2021 were analyzed. Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and procedure-related variables were compared between ESD and esophagectomy group. RESULTS: 95 patients underwent ESD, while 86 underwent esophagectomy. No significant differences were found between the two groups in OS (P = 0.587), DSS (P = 0.172), and RFS (P = 0.111). Oncologic outcomes were also similar between the two groups in propensity score-matched analysis. For T1a ESCC, the rates of R0 resection, LVI or nodal metastasis and additional therapy were similar between ESD and esophagectomy groups. But for T1b ESCC, the rates of positive resection margin and additional therapy were significantly higher in ESD group than those in esophagectomy group. CONCLUSIONS: ESD is a minimally invasive procedure that has comparable oncologic outcomes with esophagectomy for treatment poorly differentiated T1a ESCC. However, ESD is not suitable for poorly differentiated T1b ESCC, additional surgery or radiochemotherapy should be required.

The treatment of diabetic wounds possessed significant challenges in clinical practice, which was accompanied with continuous infection, inflammation, and limited angiogenesis. Current wound dressings used for diabetic wound healing struggle to address these issues simultaneously. Therefore, Ga3+ was added to the chitosan/silk solution to confer potent antibacterial properties. Subsequently, umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell exosomes (UCSC-Exo) were integrated into the gallium/chitosan/silk solution to enhance its angiogenesis-inducing activity. The mixture was lyophilized to prepare gallium/chitosan/silk/exosome sponge scaffolds (Ga/CSSF-Exo sponge scaffolds). The experiments of In vitro and in vivo demonstrated that Ga/CSSF-Exo sponge scaffolds exhibited sustained release of Ga3+ and bioactive exosomes, which effectively exerted continuous antibacterial effects and promoted angiogenesis. In diabetic rat wound models, Ga/CSSF-Exo sponge scaffolds facilitated angiogenesis, suppressed bacterial growth and inflammation, as well as promoted collagen deposition and re-epithelialization of wounds. Collectively, our findings suggested that Ga/CSSF-Exo held excellent potential for diabetic wound healing.

Accumulating salinity in soil critically affected growth, development, and yield in plant. However, the mechanisms of plant against salt stress largely remain unknown. Herein, we identified a gene named SmCYP78A7a, which encoded a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase and belonged to the CYP78A sub-family, and its transcript level was significantly up-regulated by salt stress and down-regulated by dehydration stress. SmCYP78A7a located in the endoplasmic reticulum. Silencing of SmCYP78A7a enhanced susceptibility of eggplant to salt stress, and significantly down-regulated the transcript levels of salt stress defense related genes SmGSTU10 and SmWRKY11 as well as increased hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and decreased catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) enzyme activities. In addition, SmCYP78A7a transient expression enhanced eggplant tolerance to salt stress. By chromatin immunoprecipitation PCR (ChIP-PCR), luciferase reporter assay, and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA), SmWRKY11 activated SmCYP78A7a expression by directly binding to the W-box 6-8 (W-box 6, W-box 7, and W-box 8) within SmCYP78A7a promoter to confer eggplant tolerance to salt stress. In summary, our finds reveal that SmCYP78A7a positively functions in eggplant response to salt stress via forming a positive feedback loop with SmWRKY11, and provide a new insight into regulatory mechanisms of eggplant to salt stress.

Background: In the field of medical imaging, the rapid rise of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has presented significant opportunities for conserving healthcare resources. However, with the wide spread application of CNNs, several challenges have emerged, such as enormous data annotation costs, difficulties in ensuring user privacy and security, weak model interpretability, and the consumption of substantial computational resources. The fundamental challenge lies in optimizing and seamlessly integrating CNN technology to enhance the precision and efficiency of medical diagnosis. Methods: This study sought to provide a comprehensive bibliometric overview of current research on the application of CNNs in medical imaging. Initially, bibliometric methods were used to calculate the frequency statistics, and perform the cluster analysis and the co-citation analysis of countries, institutions, authors, keywords, and references. Subsequently, the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) method was employed for the topic modeling of the literature. Next, an in-depth analysis of the topics was conducted, and the topics in the medical field, technical aspects, and trends in topic evolution were summarized. Finally, by integrating the bibliometrics and LDA results, the developmental trajectory, milestones, and future directions in this field were outlined. Results: A data set containing 6,310 articles in this field published from January 2013 to December 2023 was complied. With a total of 55,538 articles, the United States led in terms of the citation count, while in terms of the publication volume, China led with 2,385 articles. Harvard University emerged as the most influential institution, boasting an average of 69.92 citations per article. Within the realm of CNNs, residual neural network (ResNet) and U-Net stood out, receiving 1,602 and 1,419 citations, respectively, which highlights the significant attention these models have received. The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was unmistakable, as reflected by the publication of 597 articles, making it a focal point of research. Additionally, among various disease topics, with 290 articles, brain-related research was the most prevalent. Computed tomography (CT) imaging dominated the research landscape, representing 73% of the 30 different topics. Conclusions: Over the past 11 years, CNN-related research in medical imaging has grown exponentially. The findings of the present study provide insights into the field's status and research hotspots. In addition, this article meticulously chronicled the development of CNNs and highlighted key milestones, starting with LeNet in 1989, followed by a challenging 20-year exploration period, and culminating in the breakthrough moment with AlexNet in 2012. Finally, this article explored recent advancements in CNN technology, including semi-supervised learning, efficient learning, trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI), and federated learning methods, and also addressed challenges related to data annotation costs, diagnostic efficiency, model performance, and data privacy.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are metabolic by-products of cells, and abnormal changes in their levels are often associated with tumor development. Our aim was to determine the role of collagen and calcium binding EGF domain 1 (CCBE1) in oxidative stress and tumorigenesis in non-small cell lung cancer cells (NSCLC). We investigated the tumorigenic potential of CCBE1 in NSCLC using in vitro and in vivo models of CCBE1 overexpression and knockdown. Immunohistochemical staining results showed that the expression of CCBE1 in cancer tissues was significantly higher than that in adjacent tissues. Cell counting Kit 8, clonal formation, wound healing, and transwell experiments showed that CCBE1 gene knockdown significantly inhibited the migration, invasion, and proliferation of NSCLC cell lines. In terms of mechanism, the silencing of CCBE1 can significantly promote the morphological abnormalities of mitochondria, significantly increase the intracellular ROS level, and promote cell apoptosis. This change of oxidative stress can affect cell proliferation, migration, and invasion by regulating the phosphorylation level of ERK/JNK/P38 MAPK. Specifically, the downregulation of CCBE1 inhibits the phosphorylation of ERK/P38 and promotes the phosphorylation of JNK in NSCLC, and this regulation can be reversed by the antioxidant NAC. In vivo experiments confirmed that downregulating CCBE1 gene could inhibit the growth of NSCLC in BALB/c nude mice. Taken together, our results confirm the tumorigenic role of CCBE1 in promoting tumor invasion and migration in NSCLC, and reveal the molecular mechanism by which CCBE1 regulates oxidative stress and the ERK/JNK/P38 MAPK pathway.

Leydig cells are essential components of testicular interstitial tissue and serve as a primary source of androgen in males. A functional deficiency in Leydig cells often causes severe reproductive disorders; however, the transcriptional programs underlying the fate decisions and steroidogenesis of these cells have not been fully defined. In this study, we report that the homeodomain transcription factor PBX1 is a master regulator of Leydig cell differentiation and testosterone production in mice. PBX1 was highly expressed in Leydig cells and peritubular myoid cells in the adult testis. Conditional deletion of Pbx1 in Leydig cells caused spermatogenic defects and complete sterility. Histological examinations revealed that Pbx1 deletion impaired testicular structure and led to disorganization of the seminiferous tubules. Single-cell RNA-seq analysis revealed that loss of Pbx1 function affected the fate decisions of progenitor Leydig cells and altered the transcription of genes associated with testosterone synthesis in the adult testis. Pbx1 directly regulates the transcription of genes that play important roles in steroidogenesis (Prlr, Nr2f2 and Nedd4). Further analysis demonstrated that deletion of Pbx1 leads to a significant decrease in testosterone levels, accompanied by increases in pregnenolone, androstenedione and luteinizing hormone. Collectively, our data revealed that PBX1 is indispensable for maintaining Leydig cell function. These findings provide insights into testicular dysgenesis and the regulation of hormone secretion in Leydig cells.

Background: The excessive accumulation of lactate within the tumor microenvironment (TME) has been demonstrated to facilitate tumor advancement and evade the immune system. Nonetheless, the metabolic status of lactate in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains uncertain. Method: By analyzing the transcriptome profile of patients with LUAD, we created a lactate metabolism score (LMS) to predict survival. We then conducted a comprehensive examination of the biological functions and immune infiltration among different LMS patient groups. Moreover, we assessed the LMS predictive efficacy in chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Finally, we validated the detrimental phenotypic effects of SLC16A3 on LUAD cell lines (PC9 and A549) through in vitro experiments. We collected clinical samples to assess the prognostic impact of SLC16A3. Results: We constructed an LMS model with 6 lactate metabolism regulatory factors using LASSO regression. The high LMS model indicates worse clinical outcomes for LUAD patients. High LMS patients are associated with metabolic dysregulation and increased infiltration of M0 and M1 macrophages. Low LMS patients are related to upregulated citric acid metabolism pathways and memory immune cells. High LMS patients are suitable for traditional chemotherapy, while patients with low LMS are more likely to benefit from immunotherapy. Lastly, downregulating SLC16A3 significantly reduces the proliferative and invasive capabilities of LUAD cell lines. Clinical cohort shows that patients with high expression of SLC16A3 have a worse prognosis. Conclusions: The LMS model constructed based on the lactate metabolism pathway displays high effectiveness in predicting the outcome of patients with LUAD. LMS can offer direction regarding chemotherapy as well as immunotherapy in LUAD.

Contraction-expansion array (CEA) microchannel is a typical structure applied on particle/cell manipulation. The prediction of the particle focusing pattern in CEA microchannel is worthwhile to be investigate deeply. Here, we demonstrated a virtual boundary method by flow field analysis and theoretical derivation. The calculating method of the virtual boundary location, related to the Reynolds number (Re) and the structure parameter RW, was proposed. Combining the approximate Poiseuille flow pattern based on the virtual boundary method with the simulation results of Dean flow, the main line pattern and the main/lateral lines pattern were predicted and validated in experiments. The transformation from the main line pattern to the main/lateral lines pattern can be facilitated by increasing Re, decreasing RW , and decreasing α. An empirical formula was derived to characterize the critical condition of the transformation. The virtual boundary method can provide a guidance for asymmetric CEA channel design and contribute to the widespread application of microfluidic particle focusing.

OBJECTIVES: Detection of early neoplastic lesions is crucial for improving the survival rates of patients with gastric cancer. Optical enhancement mode 2 is a new image-enhanced endoscopic technique that offers bright images and can improve the visibility of neoplastic lesions. This study aimed to compare the detection of neoplastic lesions with optical enhancement mode 2 and white-light imaging (WLI) in a high-risk population. METHODS: In this prospective multicenter randomized controlled trial, patients were randomly assigned to optical enhancement mode 2 or WLI groups. Detection of suspicious neoplastic lesions during the examinations was recorded, and pathological diagnoses served as the gold standard. RESULTS: A total of 1211 and 1219 individuals were included in the optical enhancement mode 2 and WLI groups, respectively. The detection rate of neoplastic lesions was significantly higher in the optical enhancement mode 2 group (5.1% vs. 1.9%; risk ratio, 2.656 [95% confidence interval, 1.630-4.330]; p < 0.001). The detection rate of neoplastic lesions with an atrophic gastritis background was significantly higher in the optical enhancement mode 2 group (8.6% vs. 2.6%, p < 0.001). The optical enhancement mode 2 group also had a higher detection rate among endoscopists with different experiences. CONCLUSIONS: Optical enhancement mode 2 was more effective than WLI for detecting neoplastic lesions in the stomach, and can serve as a new method for screening early gastric cancer in clinical practice.
