RESUMO

Solid polymer electrolytes are promising electrolytes for safe and high-energy-density lithium metal batteries. However, traditional ether-based polymer electrolytes are limited by their low lithium-ion conductivity and narrow electrochemical window because of the well-defined and intimated Li+-oxygen binding topologies in the solvation structure. Herein, we proposed a new strategy to reduce the Li+-polymer interaction and strengthen the anion-polymer interaction by combining strong Li+-O (ether) interactions, weak Li+-O (ester) interactions with steric hindrance in polymer electrolytes. In this way, a polymer electrolyte with a high lithium ion transference number (0.80) and anion-rich solvation structure is obtained. This polymer electrolyte possesses a wide electrochemical window (5.5 V versus Li/Li+) and compatibility with both Li metal anode and high-voltage NCM cathode. Li||LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 full cells with middle-high active material areal loading (~7.5 mg cm-2) can stably cycle at 4.5 V. This work provides new insight into the design of polymer electrolytes for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries through the regulation of ion-dipole interactions.

RESUMO

The ONIOM (ωb97xd/6-31G(d,p):pm6) method was used to study the reaction mechanism of dimethylcyclopentane to toluene by the [GaH]2+ active site of Ga-ZSM-5. The results showed that the rate-determining step in the dimethylcyclopentane aromatization process is the ring expansion process. Compared to those of methylcyclopentane to benzene (D. D. Zhang, H. Y. Liu, L. X. Ling, H. R. Zhang, R. G. Zhang, P. Liu and B. J. Wang, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2021, 23, 10988-11003.), the free energy barriers of dimethylcyclopentane to toluene are significantly decreased, indicating that toluene is easier to produce than benzene, which confirmed the experimental results that a higher proportion of toluene than benzene is produced in the MTA process.

RESUMO

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries afford great promise on achieving practical high energy density beyond lithium-ion batteries. Lean-electrolyte conditions constitute the prerequisite for achieving high-energy-density Li-S batteries but inevitably deteriorates battery performances, especially the sulfur cathode kinetics. Herein, the polarizations of the sulfur cathode are systematically decoupled to identify the key kinetic limiting factor in lean-electrolyte Li-S batteries. Concretely, an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy combined galvanostatic intermittent titration technique method is developed to decouple the cathodic polarizations into activation, concentration, and ohmic parts. Therein, activation polarization during lithium sulfide nucleation emerges as the dominant polarization as the electrolyte-to-sulfur ratio (E/S ratio) decreases, and the sluggish interfacial charge transfer kinetics is identified as the main reason for degraded cell performances under lean-electrolyte conditions. Accordingly, a lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide electrolyte is proposed to decrease activation polarization, and Li-S batteries adopting this electrolyte provide a discharge capacity of 985 mAh g-1 under a low E/S ratio of 4 µL mg-1 at 0.2 C. This work identifies the key kinetic limiting factor of lean-electrolyte Li-S batteries and provides guidance on designing rational promotion strategies to achieve advanced Li-S batteries.

RESUMO

The development of thin and flexible films that possess both electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and thermal management capabilities has always been an intriguing pursuit, but itisnevertheless a crucialproblemtoaddress. Inspired by the deformability of liquid metal (LM) and film forming capacity of MXene, here we present a series of ternary compositing films prepared via cellulose nanofiber (CNF) assisted vacuum filtration technology. Originating from the highly conductive LM/MXene network, the MLMC film presents a maximum EMI shielding effectiness (EMI SE) of 78 dB at a tiny thickness of 45 µm, together with a high specific EMI SE of 3046 dB mm-1. Meanwhile, these compositing films also deliver excellent flexibility and mechanical reliability, showing no obvious decline in EMI shielding performance even after 1000 bending and 500 folding cycles, respectively. Moreover, notable anisotropic thermal conductive property was successfully achieved, allowing for a highly desirable in-plane thermal conductivity of 7.8 W m-1 K-1. This accomplishment also yielded an exceptional electro-thermal conversion capacity, enabling efficient low-voltage (3 V) heating capabilities. These captivating features are expected to greatly drive the widespread adoption of LM-based films in future flexible electronic and wearable technologies.

RESUMO

The gut microbiome of vertebrates is capable of numerous biotransformations of bile acids, which are responsible for intestinal lipid digestion and function as key nutrient-signaling molecules. The human liver produces bile acids from cholesterol predominantly in the A/B-cis orientation in which the sterol rings are "kinked", as well as small quantities of A/B-trans oriented "flat" stereoisomers known as "primary allo-bile acids". While the complex multi-step bile acid 7α-dehydroxylation pathway has been well-studied for conversion of "kinked" primary bile acids such as cholic acid (CA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) to deoxycholic acid (DCA) and lithocholic acid (LCA), respectively, the enzymatic basis for the formation of "flat" stereoisomers allo-deoxycholic acid (allo-DCA) and allo-lithocholic acid (allo-LCA) by Firmicutes has remained unsolved for three decades. Here, we present a novel mechanism by which Firmicutes generate the "flat" bile acids allo-DCA and allo-LCA. The BaiA1 was shown to catalyze the final reduction from 3-oxo-allo-DCA to allo-DCA and 3-oxo-allo-LCA to allo-LCA. Phylogenetic and metagenomic analyses of human stool samples indicate that BaiP and BaiJ are encoded only in Firmicutes and differ from membrane-associated bile acid 5α-reductases recently reported in Bacteroidetes that indirectly generate allo-LCA from 3-oxo-Δ4-LCA. We further map the distribution of baiP and baiJ among Firmicutes in human metagenomes, demonstrating an increased abundance of the two genes in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients relative to healthy individuals.

RESUMO

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the major worldwide causes of dementia that is characterized by irreversible decline in learning, memory loss, and behavioral impairments. Mitophagy is selective autophagy through the clearance of aberrant mitochondria, specifically for degradation to maintain energy generation and neuronal and synaptic function in the brain. Accumulating evidence shows that defective mitophagy is believed to be as one of the early and prominent features in AD pathogenesis and has drawn attention in the recent few years. APOE ε4 allele is the greatest genetic determinant for AD and is widely reported to mediate detrimental effects on mitochondria function and mitophagic process. Given the continuity of the physiological process, this review takes the mitochondrial dynamic and mitophagic core events into consideration, which highlights the current knowledge about the molecular alterations from an APOE-genotype perspective, synthesizes ApoE4-associated regulations, and the cross-talk between these signaling, along with the focuses on general autophagic process and several pivotal processes of mitophagy, including mitochondrial dynamic (DRP1, MFN-1), mitophagic induction (PINK1, Parkin). These may shed new light on the link between ApoE4 and AD and provide novel insights for promising mitophagy-targeted therapeutic strategies for AD.

RESUMO

The diagnosis of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease is based on the detection of liver steatosis together with the presence of metabolic dysfunction. According to this new definition, the diagnosis of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease is independent of the amount of alcohol consumed. Actually, alcohol and its metabolites have various effects on metabolic-associated abnormalities during the process of alcohol metabolism. Studies have shown improved metabolic function in light to moderate alcohol drinkers. There are several studies focusing on the role of light to moderate alcohol intake on metabolic dysfunction. However, the results from studies are diverse, and the conclusions are often controversial. This review systematically discusses the effects of alcohol consumption, focusing on light to moderate alcohol consumption, obesity, lipid and glucose metabolism, and blood pressure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Low-level viremia generally refers to detectable HBV DNA levels lower than 2000 IU/mL. Studies show that low-level viremia is a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma. The aim of this study was to explore the characteristics of low-level viremia patients with hepatitis B-related hepatocellular carcinoma and identify prognostic factors after curative hepatectomy. METHODS: Data from chronic hepatitis B patients with hepatocellular carcinoma receiving curative hepatectomy for the first time in the first hospital of China Medical University were studied. Patients were divided into two groups based on preoperative HBV DNA levels: group 1 (low-level viremia group, HBV DNA < 2000 IU/mL) and group 2 (HBV DNA ≥ 2000 IU/mL). RESULTS: Of the 212 patients, 104 patients were in group 1 and 108 patients were in group 2. There was a lower proportion of patients with HBsAg levels > 250 IU/mL (the upper limit of detection in our laboratory) in group 1 than in group 2 (71.2% vs. 86.1%, P < 0.01). The percentage of patients with a tumor diameter < 5 cm was 67.3% in group 1 and 37.0% in group 2 (P < 0.000). The percentage of tumor recurrence was 40.4% (42) in group 1 and 54.6% (59) in group 2 (P < 0.05). Median recurrence-free survival was 30.1 months in group 1 and 17.6 months in group 2 (P < 0.01). Multivariate analysis showed that a tumor diameter ≥ 5 cm (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.819, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.193-2.775, P = 0.005), intrahepatic metastasis (HR = 1.916, 95% CI 1.077-3.407, P = 0.027), and an HBV DNA level ≥ 100 IU/mL (the lower limit of detection in our laboratory, HR = 2.943, 95% CI 1.916-4.520, P < 0.000) were independent prognostic factors associated with an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence. CONCLUSION: Preoperative low-level viremia was related with a long tumor recurrence interval and complete virologic response after curative hepatectomy was associated with a lower risk of hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence.

RESUMO

Analysing and understanding the factors that influence the behavior of waste separation is critical to improved waste management. This study identified the factors behind behavioral change in waste separation at source in an international community. The theory of planned Behavior (TPB) was adopted to conduct a self-report questionnaire survey twice, in which 354 residents participated at Time1 and 331 at Time 2, with a retention rate of 93.5%. The questionnaires were designed based on TPB with additional questions regarding waste separation rules in the community, experience of waste separation, and environmental knowledge. With the questionnaire data and follow-up qualitative interviews, factors related to waste separation through factor analysis and structural equation modelling and text mining were specified. The panel data collected over three months demonstrated the changes in attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control that affect behavioral intention in the process of behavior adaption. Combined with interview data, the reasons for these changes can be further attributed to individuals' environmental knowledge and community guidelines. The findings imply that policies targeting environmental education and rulemaking are effective to help residents form more positive intentions towards waste separation.

RESUMO

Radiation-induced brain injury is a major adverse event in head and neck tumor treatment, influencing the quality of life for the more than 50% of patients who undergo radiation therapy and experience long-term survival. However, no effective treatments are available for these patients, and preventative drugs and effective drug-delivery methods must be developed. Based on our results, miR-122-5p was upregulated in the mouse radiation-induced brain injury (RBI) model and patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who received radiation therapy. Intranasal administration of a single antagomiR-122-5p dose before irradiation effectively alleviated radiation-induced cognitive impairment, neuronal injury, and neuroinflammation in the mouse RBI model. Results further indicated that miR-122-5p inhibition in microglia reduced the levels of proinflammatory cytokines and enhanced the phagocytic function to protect against radiation-induced neuronal injury in cell models. Further, we profiled transcriptome data and verified that Tensin 1 (TNS1) may be the target of miR-122-5p in RBI. In summary, our results reveal a distinct role for miR-122-5p in regulating neuroinflammation in RBI, indicating that a non-invasive strategy for intranasal miR-122-5p administration may be an attractive therapeutic target in RBI, providing new insights for clinical trials. Further systematic safety assessment, optimization of drug administration, and clarity of mechanism will accelerate the process into clinical practice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Serum uric acid (SUA) affects the reaction of oxidative stress and free radicals in the neurodegenerative processes. However, whether SUA impacts Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore whether high SUA levels can aggravate the neurobiological changes of AD in preclinical AD. METHODS: We analyzed cognitively intact participants (n = 839, age 62.16 years) who received SUA and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers (amyloid-ß [Aß], total tau [t-Tau], and phosphorylated tau [p-Tau]) measurements from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and LifestylE (CABLE) database using multivariable-adjusted linear models. RESULTS: Levels of SUA in the preclinical AD elevated compared with the healthy controls (p = 0.007) and subjects with amyloid pathology had higher concentration of SUA than controls (p = 0.017). Roughly, equivalent levels of SUA displayed among cognitively intact individuals with or without tau pathology and neurodegeneration. CSF Aß1 - 42 (p = 0.019) and Aß1 - 42/Aß1 - 40 (p = 0.027) were decreased and CSF p-Tau/Aß1 - 42 (p = 0.009) and t-Tau/Aß1 - 42 (p = 0.043) were increased with the highest (> 75th percentile) SUA when compared to lowest SUA, implying a high burden of cerebral amyloidosis in individuals with high SUA. Sensitivity analyses using the usual threshold to define hyperuricemia and precluding drug effects yielded robust associations. Nevertheless, the quadratic model did not show any U-shaped relationships between them. CONCLUSION: SUA may aggravate brain amyloid deposition in preclinical AD, which corroborated the detrimental role of SUA.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Metabolic healthy obesity (MHO) is a unique subgroup of overweight and obese individuals with normal metabolic characteristics. Its association with the risk of stroke remains unclear. We aimed to examine the risk of stroke in MHO individuals and the further associations between stroke and metabolic abnormalities under different bodyweight conditions. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library from December 1946 to January 2019, and only included prospective cohort studies. Random effects models were used to evaluate the pooled risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of incident stroke. RESULTS: A total of eight studies comprising 4,256,888 participants were included in the meta-analysis. MHO individuals had an increased risk of stroke compared with metabolically healthy normal weight (MH-NW) individuals (RR =1.17, 95% CI: 1.11-1.23). However, the stroke risk of metabolically healthy overweight individuals was the same (RR =1.02, 95% CI: 0.84-1.23). All groups with unhealthy metabolism had a similarly elevated risk: normal weight (RR =1.83, 95% CI: 1.57-2.14), overweight (RR =1.93, 95% CI: 1.44-2.58), and obesity (RR =2.00, 95% CI: 1.40-2.87). CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis confirms a positive association between MHO phenotype and the risk of stroke. Individuals with metabolic abnormalities under different bodyweight conditions are at elevated risk.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has emerged as an inflammatory marker. However, the associations of NLR with intracranial artery stenosis (ICAS) and ischemic stroke remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the associations of NLR with ICAS and ischemic stroke among a large and high-risk population. METHODS: Participants with records of clinical characteristics were prospectively recruited from the Neurology Department and Health & Physical Examination Center of Qingdao Municipal Hospital. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the associations of NLR with ICAS and ischemic stroke. Moreover, we also conducted parametric mediation analysis to estimate the effect of NLR on the risk of ischemic stroke mediated through ICAS. RESULTS: A total of 2989 participants were enrolled in this study. After adjusting for covariates, NLR (OR = 1.125, 95%CI 1.070-1.183) and ICAS (OR = 1.638, 95%CI 1.364-1.967) were significantly associated with ischemic stroke. Compared with the first quartile NLR, the second, third and fourth quartiles NLR were independent risk predictors for ischemic stroke (P for trend < 0.001); the third and fourth quartiles were independent predictors for ICAS (P for trend < 0.001). The mediation analysis showed that ICAS partially mediated the association between NLR and ischemic stroke, accounting for 14.4% of the total effect (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: NLR was significantly associated with ICAS and ischemic stroke. Besides, ICAS partially mediated the association between NLR and ischemic stroke.

RESUMO

Radiation-induced brain injury (RBI) is a serious complication in patients who have received radiotherapy for head and neck tumors. Currently, there is a scarcity of information on early diagnostic and preventive methods of RBI. Accumulating evidence suggests that microRNAs are involved in the regulation of radiation injury, but the molecular biological mechanism of miRNAs in RBI is largely unknown. Therefore, in our study, microRNA sequencing was used to discover differential miRNAs in the hippocampus of RBI-modeled mice, which suggested that miR-741-3p was most significantly upregulated. To clarify the underlying mechanism of miR-741-3p in RBI-modeled mice, an inhibitor of miR-741-3p (antagomiR-741) was delivered into the brain via the nasal passage before irradiation. The delivery of antagomiR-741 significantly reduced miR-741-3p levels in the hippocampus of RBI-modeled mice, and the cognitive dysfunction and neuronal apoptosis induced by radiation were also alleviated at 6 weeks postirradiation. Downregulation of miR-741-3p was found to improve the protrusion and branching status of microglia after irradiation and reduced the number of GFAP-positive astrocytes. Additionally, antagomiR-741 suppressed the radiation-induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α in the hippocampus and S100B in the serum. Furthermore, Ddr2, PKCα and St8sia1 were revealed as target genes of miR-741-3p and as potential regulatory targets for RBI. Overall, our study provides identification and functional evaluation of miRNA in RBI and lays the foundation for improving the prevention strategy for RBI based on the delivery of miRNA via the nose-brain pathway.

RESUMO

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) progranulin (PGRN) is related to various neurodegeneration diseases. And sleep problems can cause abnormality in protein metabolism in vivo. We aim to explore the potential associations between the self-reported sleep characteristics and CSF PGRN in cognitively intact older adults. Our study recruited 747 participants (mean (standard deviation (SD)) age, 61.99 (10.52) years, 329 (42.89%) females) who had normal cognition from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and LifestylE (CABLE) study with CSF PGRN and sleep characteristics measured. The multiple linear regression and nonlinear regression adjusted for age, gender, education, and apolipoprotein E-epsilon 4 gene (APOE4) status were used to assess the associations between sleep characteristics and PGRN. Interaction effects were explored between APOE4 status and sleep characteristics on CSF PGRN level. Sleep disturbances indicated lower CSF PGRN (ß = - 0.0186, p = 0.0160). For detailed items in sleep disturbances, lower CSF PGRN was found in males who woke up during sleep (ß = - 0.0121, p = 0.0062) and in females who had breathing difficulties (ß = - 0.0258, p = 0.0271). Meanwhile, sleep efficiency was associated with CSF PGRN (ß = - 0.0512, p = 0.0497). No significant interaction effects between sleep characteristics and APOE4 status were found. Meanwhile, we did not find a nonlinear relationship between nocturnal sleep duration and CSF PGRN. Sleep problems may influence the metabolism of PGRN, thus attenuating the protective effects of PGRN on neurodegeneration diseases.

RESUMO

The lymphatic vasculature is involved in the pathogenesis of acute cardiac injuries, but little is known about its role in chronic cardiac dysfunction. Here, we demonstrate that angiotensin II infusion induced cardiac inflammation and fibrosis at 1 week and caused cardiac dysfunction and impaired lymphatic transport at 6 weeks in mice, while co-administration of VEGFCc156s improved these parameters. To identify novel mechanisms underlying this protection, RNA sequencing analysis in distinct cell populations revealed that VEGFCc156s specifically modulated angiotensin II-induced inflammatory responses in cardiac and peripheral lymphatic endothelial cells. Furthermore, telemetry studies showed that while angiotensin II increased blood pressure acutely in all animals, VEGFCc156s-treated animals displayed a delayed systemic reduction in blood pressure independent of alterations in angiotensin II-mediated aortic stiffness. Overall, these results demonstrate that VEGFCc156s had a multifaceted therapeutic effect to prevent angiotensin II-induced cardiac dysfunction by improving cardiac lymphatic function, alleviating fibrosis and inflammation, and ameliorating hypertension.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect and mechanism of action of microRNA (miR)-27b on skin wound healing in rats with deep second-degree scald burns and in BJ human skin fibroblast cells. Rat models with deep second-degree scald burns were constructed and injected with miR-27b mimics and inhibitors at the wound site daily for 21 days. Healing of burned skin tissues was observed at 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21 days following modeling. H&E and Masson staining were used to observe the pathological structure and degree of collagen fibers in the burned skin tissues. The effects of miR-27b on BJ cell proliferation and migration were determined by MTT and scratch assays. Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen I and collagen III expression in rat skin tissues and BJ cells were measured via reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blot analysis. The results of the in vivo experiments demonstrated that miR-27b inhibition accelerated scalded skin healing and induced fibroblast growth. Furthermore, the in vitro experiments revealed that miR-27b inhibition increased BJ cell proliferation and migration. Furthermore, miR-27b inhibition upregulated MMP-1, α-SMA, collagen I and collagen III expression in the skin tissues and cells, while the overexpression of miR-27b demonstrated the opposite effect. In conclusion, the results of the present study revealed that miR-27b inhibition increased fibroblast proliferation, thereby accelerating scald wound healing in rats.

RESUMO

It has been increasingly evident that pulse pressure (PP) is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) but whether PP increases AD risk and the mechanism responsible for this association remains unclear. To investigate the effects of PP in the process of AD, we have evaluated the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of PP with AD biomarkers, brain structure and cognition and have assessed the effect of PP on AD risk in a large sample (n= 1,375) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Multiple linear regression and mixed-model regression were employed in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses respectively. Clinical disease progression was assessed using Cox proportional hazards models. High PP was associated with lower ß-amyloid 42 (Aß42) (P= .015), and higher total tau (T-tau) (P= .011), phosphorylated tau (P-tau) (P= .003), T-tau/Aß42 (P= .004) and P-tau/Aß42 (P = .001), as well as heavier cortical amyloid-beta burden (P= .011). Longitudinally, baseline high PP was significantly associated with hippocampal atrophy (P= .039), entorhinal atrophy (P= .031) and worse memory performance (P= .058). Baseline high PP showed more rapid progression than those with normal PP (P <.001). These results suggest PP elevation could increase AD risk, which may be driven by amyloid plaques and subclinical neurodegeneration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Higher late-life body mass index (BMI) was associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which might be explained by a reverse causal relationship. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether weight loss was a preclinical manifestation of AD pathologies and could be a predictor of cognitive impairment. METHODS: A total of 1,194 participants (mean age = 73.2 [range: 54 to 91] years, female = 44.5%) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) were grouped according to AD biomarker profile as indicated by amyloid (A) and tau (TN) status and clinical stage by clinical dementia rating (CDR). BMI across the biomarker-defined clinical stages was compared with Bonferroni correction. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to test the relationship between the amyloid change by PET and the BMI change. Multiple regression models were used to explore the influences of amyloid pathologies on BMI change as well as the effects of weight loss on longitudinal changes of global cognitive function. RESULTS: BMI was significantly decreased in AD preclinical stage (amyloid positive [A+] and CDR = 0) and dementia stage (A+/TN+ and CDR = 0.5 or 1), compared with the healthy controls (A-/TN-and CDR = 0, p < 0.005), while no significant differences were observed between preclinical AD and AD dementia. Amyloid PET change was inversely correlated with BMI change (p = 0.023, ß= -14). Individuals in amyloid positive group exhibited faster weight loss (time×group interaction p = 0.019, ß= -0.20) compared to the amyloid negative group. Greater weight loss predicted higher risk of developing cognitive disorders. CONCLUSION: Elders who experienced greater weight loss might belong to preclinical stage of AD and could be targeted for primary prevention of the disease.

RESUMO

Background: Migraine is an intractable headache disorder, manifesting as periodic attacks. It is highly burdensome for patients and society. Acupuncture treatment can be beneficial as a supplementary and preventive therapy for migraine. Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for migraine, and to examine transcranial doppler changes after acupuncture. Methods: Reports, conference, and academic papers published before March 15, 2019 in databases including PubMed, Cochrane library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WANFANG Database, Chinese journal of Science and Technology, and China Biomedical were searched. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving acupuncture, sham acupuncture, and medication in migraine were included. The Cochrane Collaboration software, RevMan 5.3, was used for data processing and migration risk analysis. Results: Twenty-eight RCTs were included. 15 RCTs included medication only, 10 RCTs included sham acupuncture only, and 3 RCTs included both. The study included 2874 patients, split into 3 groups: acupuncture treatment group (n = 1396), medication control group (n = 865), and sham acupuncture control group (n = 613). The results showed that treatment was more effective in the acupuncture group than in the sham acupuncture group (MD = 1.88, 95% CI [1.61, 2.20], P < 0.00001) and medication group (MD = 1.16, 95% CI [1.12, 1.21], P < 0.00001). Improvement in visual analog scale (VAS) score was greater in the acupuncture group than in the sham acupuncture group (MD = -1.00, 95% CI [-1.27,-0.46], P < 0.00001; MD = -0.59, 95% CI [-0.81,-0.38], P < 0.00001), and their adverse reaction rate was lower than that of the medication group (RR = 0.16, 95% CI [0.05, 0.52], P = 0.002). The improvement of intracranial blood flow velocity by acupuncture is better than that by medication, but the heterogeneity makes the result unreliable. Conclusions: Acupuncture reduced the frequency of migraine attacks, lowered VAS scores, and increased therapeutic efficiency compared with sham acupuncture. Compared with medication, acupuncture showed higher effectiveness with less adverse reactions and improved intracranial blood circulation. However, owing to inter-study heterogeneity, a prospective, multicenter RCT with a large sample is required to verify these results.
