RESUMO

The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of a regional population-based genetic testing program on the incidence of ovarian cancer in West Pomerania. Between 1999 and 2010, a total of 37,552 women ages 35 to 70 were tested for three BRCA1 founder mutations at the outpatient genetics clinic of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, Poland. A total of 641 women were found to carry a mutation (1.7%) and of these, 220 had a prophylactic oophorectomy (34.3%). A total of 12 women had an occult cancer diagnosed at the time of prophylactic oophorectomy (5.5%). We estimate that 26 more ovarian cancers would have been diagnosed by January 2015 in the absence of these oophorectomies and that an additional 25 cancers will be prevented in the future (total 51). During this period, 1611 ovarian cancers were diagnosed in the region; therefore we estimate that approximately 1.6% of ovarian cancers were prevented between 1999 and 2015 by our genetic testing program. We conclude that the prophylactic oophorectomies performed between 1999 and 2010 as a result of widespread BRCA1 mutation testing have reduced the incidence of ovarian cancer in Pomerania by a small amount (about 1.6%), and that the impact of genetic testing will increase in the coming years.

RESUMO

Osteohistometric studies were performed in 15 female and 15 male cadavers aged 18-25. Condyloid process and right and left acetabulum of the temporo-mandibular joint have been studied. Density has been investigated using monitor screen linked with microscope (magnification 80x). Density in the spongy part of the condyloid process was 26.67-26.77%; in the subchondrial layer--72.13-72.72%, and in the acetabular wall 75.03-75.91%. Microscopic structure of the bones of the temporo-mandibular joint revealed no differences when compared with images of compact and cancellous bone shown in the histology textbooks. Sex and the side of the body had no influence on microscopic image and proportional bone density. Isles of chondrocytes in the trabeculae of the spongy structure of the condyloid process were found in 4 cases and isles of the condensed bone resembling the compact pattern in 7 cases.

RESUMO

Changes having been caused during the application of high fat diet were estimated in the rabbit's heart muscle. The animals were divided into three groups. The control group was given the basic diet. The second group received high fat diet, while the third group got high fat diet and one of the 5 hypolipemic drugs (ME3, ME4, clofibrate, diprophylline, cernitin). The specimens from the left ventricle of the heart muscle were evaluated under light microscope for carrying out a number of histological and histochemical examinations, use was also made of electron microscopy. On the basis of the performed studies it has been ascertained that: 1) atherogenic diet in rabbits causes injury involving all the layers of the heart; 2) mechanism originating changes depends on vascular bed diminution, and on primary lesion of the mitochondrial system in cardiomyocytes; 3) the used drugs with hypolipemic action fail to exert favourable influence upon the image of the damaged heart muscle.

RESUMO

In connection with the widespread use of the product Salbupart POLFA in the treatment of imminent premature labour the effect of this medicament on rabbit fetuses was studied. In all, 29 fetuses were examined, particularly with histological examination of the heart and the central nervous system. No harmful effects of the medicament on these organs was found. In the fetal central nervous system Salbupart produced more intense staining of myelin sheaths by Heidenhain's method which may suggest earlier maturation of the brain.

RESUMO

A case of mitochondrial enzymopathy, called also ophthalmoplegia plus, was observed in a 31-year-old man. Histoenzymatic investigations demonstrated in the myocytes decreased and irregularity of reactions for succinic dehydrogenase, tetrazole reductase and mitochondrial ATPase. In electron microscopy paracrystalline structures, lamellar bodies and concentrically condensed cristae were seen in the mitochondria, and increased glycogen stores outside the mitochondria.
