RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is the mainstay of cancer treatment, bringing patients optimism about recurrence and survival. However, the clinical effectiveness of chemotherapeutic drugs is frequently jeopardized by their intrinsic toxicity, resulting in side effects affecting the quality of life of cancer patients. This analysis explores the ethnopharmacological impact of phytopharmaceuticals, highlighting their traditional use in many cultures. The present study, which takes its cues from indigenous knowledge, aims to close the knowledge gap between traditional medicine and modern medicine in reducing the toxicities of chemotherapy treatments. AIM: The present in-depth study aims to highlight the current research and upcoming developments in phytopharmaceuticals for reducing the toxicity of chemotherapeutic drugs. Further, we address the mechanisms through which phytopharmaceuticals may reduce chemotherapy-induced side effects that include nausea, vomiting, myelosuppression, nephropathy, neuropathy, and cardiotoxicity using data from a variety of preclinical and clinical investigations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The literature search was carried out by employing search engines such as PubMed and Google Scholar with keywords such as cancer, chemotherapy, CNS toxicity, hematopoietic toxicity, renal toxicity, GI toxicity, CNS toxicity, and phytopharmaceuticals. RESULTS: Bioactive chemicals found in plants, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices, are being studied for their capacity to improve the safety and acceptability of chemotherapy regimens. The current review also dives into the investigation of phytopharmaceuticals as adjuvant medicines in cancer treatment, which is a viable path for addressing the pressing need to lessen chemotherapy-induced toxicities. CONCLUSION: The present review revealed that the potential of phytopharmaceuticals in alleviating chemotherapeutic drug toxicities would pave the way for better cancer treatment and patient outcomes, harmonizing with the larger trend towards personalized and holistic approaches to chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Lung clearance rates of inhaled (99m)Tc-DTPA aerosols constitute a sensitive index to evaluate the permeability changes characteristic of airway epithelial damage. It was thought that edema of the airway wall which is reported in asthma could be relieved with a diuretic like furosemide, helping to relieve the symptoms. We intended to study the effect of inhaled furosemide on lung epithelial permeability in asthmatics and smokers with the help of (99m)Tc-DTPA lung clearance test (LCT). METHODS: The study included three groups (n = 15), viz. normal healthy controls, asymptomatic chronic smokers, and chronic persistent asthmatics. Each subject underwent the LCT twice, baseline and post-furosemide (Lasix) study, within a week's interval. The post-furosemide study was carried out 15 min after inhalation of 10 mg of lasix. Lung epithelial permeability was determined in terms of clearance half-life (T (1/2)). RESULTS: The baseline mean T (1/2) values for controls, smokers, and asthmatics were 50.95 +/- 16.58, 20.81 +/- 5.47, 24.06 +/- 6.19 min, respectively. Post-lasix T (1/2) values were 50.83 +/- 15.84, 20.70 +/- 5.65, 41.27 +/- 15.07 min, respectively. There was a significant difference (P < 0.001) in baseline and post-lasix clearance values in asthmatics only. CONCLUSION: Baseline lung epithelial permeability was altered in smokers and asthmatics compared to the controls. Furosemide was effective only in asthmatics in reverting the permeability almost back to the normal range. Inhaled furosemide was effective even in moderate and severe asthmatics. Furosemide has multiple mechanisms of action. It possibly acts at bronchial level in view of the pathology in asthmatics lying in the airways.

The estimation of alpha-glucosidase activity in semen is widely used as a marker of epididymal function. In the present studies, glucosidase activity was evaluated in the different segments of the rat epididymis under various physiological conditions. In addition, the effect of two known male antifertility agents, gossypol and alpha-chlorohydrin, on enzyme activity was evaluated. Enzyme activity was absent from the epididymis of rats aged 10 and 20 days but became detectable at 30 days of age when the adult pattern of distribution (highest activity in the caput epididymis) was established. Enzyme activity was reduced significantly in all segments of the epididymis at 7 days after castration and a significant decrease in activity was also observed following the administration of either gossypol or alpha-chlorohydrin. These findings are consistent with a role for alpha-glucosidase in sperm maturation in the epididymis.
