Purpose of the study was to define the diagnostic value of clinical and laboratory criteria of sepsis during the postop- erative period Methods. The results of 269 blood tests (biochemical, coagulation, hematology and microbiology) which were per- formed in 115 patients in the early postoperative period (starting from the first postoperative day) and in the late post- operative periods were analyzed. RESULTS: Presepsin and procalcitonin have a similar diagnostic sensitivity in detection of sepsis - 89% (Psp>328.5 ng/l, PCT>1 ng/ml), but presepsin have a statistically significant lower specificity in comparison with procalcitonin (31% and 61%, respectively). This fact limits the use of presepsin in routine practice in multidisciplinary surgical hospital. Quantitative determination ofprocalcitonin is most preferably for the detection of septic complications in patients in the postoperative period, the results ofpresepsin must be interpreted only with other biochemical and hematological parameters.

Purpose of the investigation was to compare physiological reactions of primates (Macaca mulatta) to microgravity simulated by immersion and head-down tilt (HDT). In immersion experiments, primates in waterproof suits were put into motion-restraining chairs and immersed into water (t=35.4 degrees C) breast-deep for 9 days. In 9-d HDT experiments, prone primates were motor restrained in dedicated tilt beds at -5 degrees. It was found that the CNS functioning was significantly affected, the plasma volume reduced and the marrow erythropoietic function declined. Atrophy developed in leg muscles on a backdrop of iliopectineal spongy osteopenia. Loss in hydration, inhibition of erythropoietic hemopoiesis and iliopectineal spongy osteopenia were more pronounced following immersion than HDT.

A total of 25 young monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were trained with the Psychomotor Test System, a package of software tasks and computer hardware developed for spaceflight research with nonhuman primates. Two flight monkeys and two control monkeys were selected from this pool and performed a psychomotor task before and after the Bion 11 flight or a ground-control period. Monkeys from both groups showed significant disruption in performance after the 14-day flight or simulation (plus one anesthetized day of biopsies and other tests), and this disruption appeared to be magnified for the flight animal.
