RESUMO

Diospyrosmun A.Chev. ex Lecomte (Ebenaceae), a native evergreen tree in Vietnam, has important economic and ecological values. The absence of effective and reliable molecular markers has hampered the study of D.mun's genetic diversity and population structure, even though it is an endemic and endangered species. Therefore, significant enrichment of genomic resources is urgently needed to uncover and better understand the genetic architecture of D.mun. This study aims to demonstrate an efficient and reliable tool to explore the polymorphism within D.mun germplasm. It provides a valuable platform for the breeding and conservation of this species and other endangered species worldwide. The Illumina HiSeq™ 4000 sequencing technology was applied for the transcriptomic analysis, genetic differentiation and population structure of D.mun in Vietnam. In this study, the transcriptomes of D.mun were analysed using the Illumina HiSeqTM 4000 sequencing system and a total of 5,588,615,700 base pairs were generated. De novo assembly indicated that 91,134 unigenes were generated (average length = 645.55 bp, N50 = 957 bp, Q20 = 98.08% and Q30 = 94.51%). A total of 92,798 and 21,134 unigenes had significant similarities amongst Nr and Swiss-Prot, respectively. In the GO database, 19,929 unigenes were annotated and these genes were divided into three major categories and 50 subcategories. In the KOG analysis, 18,499 unigenes were annotated and divided into 25 gene function categories. In the KEGG analysis, 12,017 unigenes were annotated. According to the related pathways involved, they could be classified into 56 subclasses. In this study, we have identified a total of 9,391 EST-SSR markers. Ten microsatellite loci were employed to assess the genetic diversity and structure of 82 adult D.mun trees across three populations in Vietnam. The results indicated moderate levels of genetic diversity with PIC = 0.77, NA = 3.9, NE = 2.8, Ho = 0.56 and HE = 0.58 and the fixation index value was recorded as positive for three populations (NS, NH and CP). Genetic differentiation among populations was low (FST = 0.045), suggesting limited gene flow (Nm = 5.34). This result indicates gene exchange between the populations of ancient D.mun from different geographical areas and regions. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that high genetic variation existed within individuals (91%) compared to amongst populations (4%). Genetic structure analysis, DAPC and the NJ tree indicated that the three populations were divided into three main clusters. With this study, we provide a molecular resoureces for the breeding and conservation of D.mun.

A Lagrangian-particle tracking model, Delft3D-PART, combined with hydrodynamics models are used to investigate the fate and transport of buoyant plastics from Ba Lat river mouth in Red River Delta, northern Vietnam. It was found that during the dry season (Dec-Feb), 23 % (26.43 ton) of the plastics reached the shoreline while 76.1 % (68.3 ton) moved towards the coast further south of Red River Delta. During the wet season (Jun-Aug), 42 % (56.3 ton) were transported offshore away from the coast and 20 % (26.43 ton) distributed along the shore. The two bays adjacent to the river mouth are major hotspots with the intensity skewed towards the upwind side relative to the seasonal monsoon. This phenomenon is exacerbated by storm events which reverse the typical transport and lead to formation of hotspots at the upwind side of the plastic source. Guidance of model results for targeted cleanup operations is discussed.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the clinical efficacy of Kinesiotaping (KT) combined with a rehabilitation program to reduce symptoms and functional limitations in patients with Rotator Cuff-Related Shoulder Pain (RCRSP) in Vietnam. METHODS: In total, 82 participants who were diagnosed with RCRSP were randomly allocated into two groups. Both groups received a standard rehabilitation program; additionally, the intervention group was treated with KT. Outcomes, assessed at baseline, and 3, 7, and 14 days postintervention, included pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale, VAS), functional disability (Shoulder Pain and Disability Index, SPADI), and active range of motion (ROM). RESULTS: The KT group exhibited significant improvements in all outcome measures. VAS scores decreased by an average of 13.3 points in the KT group at 14 days, which was notably greater than that in the control group (95% CI: -17.77 to -8.82). SPADI scores also improved significantly in the KT group, with reductions of -11.36, -15.27, and -13.3 at days 3, 7, and 14, respectively. Regarding ROM, the KT group showed notable improvements in flexion and external rotation, with flexion ROM differences of 10.78, 10.35, and 11.8 degrees at the respective time points. No significant changes were observed in the abduction or internal rotation ROM. After adjusting for age, baseline scores, and gender, there was a statistically significant interaction between Group and Time on the VAS, SPADI, and ROM abduction. CONCLUSION: Incorporating KT into a standard rehabilitation program for RCRSP demonstrated enhanced efficacy in reducing pain and improving shoulder function. The results suggest that KT can be a valuable component of the treatment regimen for RCRSP.

A strong and effective COVID-19 and future pandemic responses rely on global efforts to carry out surveillance of infections and emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants and to act accordingly in real time. Many countries in Southeast Asia lack capacity to determine the potential threat of new variants, or other emerging infections. Funded by Wellcome, the Southeast Asia initiative to combat SARS-CoV-2 variants (SEACOVARIANTS) consortium aims to develop and apply a multidisciplinary research platform in Southeast Asia (SEA) for rapid assessment of the biological significance of SARS-CoV-2 variants, thereby informing coordinated local, regional and global responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our proposal is delivered by the Vietnam and Thailand Wellcome Africa Asia Programmes, bringing together a multidisciplinary team in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam with partners in Singapore, the UK and the USA. Herein we outline five work packages to deliver strengthened regional scientific capacity that can be rapidly deployed for future outbreak responses.


Our project strengthens local scientific capacity in South East Asia (SEA) and therefore enables the rapid assessment of SARS-CoV-2 variants as they emerge within the region. While COVID-19 remains a global pandemic, future emerging infections caused by a novel virus is an inevitable event, with SEA being a global hot-spot for pathogen emergence. Consequently, the research capacity built, the scientists trained and the research network formed as part of this project will lay the foundation for future locally-led outbreak responses. Our project will demonstrate that novel research platforms can be set up in other low and middle income countries to address the unprecedented challenges presented by emerging infections.

Traditionally, behavioral, social, and health science researchers have relied on global/retrospective survey methods administered cross-sectionally (i.e., on a single occasion) or longitudinally (i.e., on several occasions separated by weeks, months, or years). More recently, social and health scientists have added daily life survey methods (also known as intensive longitudinal methods or ambulatory assessment) to their toolkit. These methods (e.g., daily diaries, experience sampling, ecological momentary assessment) involve dense repeated assessments in everyday settings. To facilitate research using daily life survey methods, we present SEMA3 ( http://www.SEMA3.com ), a platform for designing and administering intensive longitudinal daily life surveys via Android and iOS smartphones. SEMA3 fills an important gap by providing researchers with a free, intuitive, and flexible platform with basic and advanced functionality. In this article, we describe SEMA3's development history and system architecture, provide an overview of how to design a study using SEMA3 and outline its key features, and discuss the platform's limitations and propose directions for future development of SEMA3.

Extensive removal of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) using titania (TiO2) nanoparticles by adsorption and photocatalysis with a surface coating by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is reported. The CTAB-coated TiO2 nanoparticles (CCTN) were characterized by FT-IR, zeta-potential measurements, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis-DRS). 2,4,5-T removal increased significantly after surface modification with CTAB compared with bare TiO2 nanoparticles. Optimal parameters affecting 2,4,5-T removal were found to be pH 4, CCTN dosage 10 mg/mL, and adsorption time 180 min. The maximum adsorptive removal of 2,4,5-T using CCTN reached 96.2% while highest adsorption capacity was 13.4 mg/g. CCTN was also found to be an excellent photocatalyst that achieved degradation efficiency of 99.2% with an initial concentration of 25 mg/L. The removal mechanisms of 2,4,5-T using CCTN by both adsorption and photocatalysis are discussed in detail based on changes in functional group vibrations and surface charge. Our results indicate that CCTN is an excellent material for 2,4,5-T removal in water by both adsorption and photocatalysis.

Cinnamomumparthenoxylon (Jack) Meisn. is a tree in genus Cinnamomum that has been facing global threats due to forest degradation and habitat fragmentation. Many recent studies aim to describe habitats and assess population and species genetic diversity for species conservation by expanding afforestation models for this species. Understanding their current and future potential distribution plays a major role in guiding conservation efforts. Using five modern machine-learning algorithms available on Google Earth Engine helped us evaluate suitable habitats for the species. The results revealed that Random Forest (RF) had the highest accuracy for model comparison, outperforming Support Vector Machine (SVM), Classification and Regression Trees (CART), Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt). The results also showed that the extremely suitable ecological areas for the species are mostly distributed in northern Vietnam, followed by the North Central Coast and the Central Highlands. Elevation, Temperature Annual Range and Mean Diurnal Range were the three most important parameters affecting the potential distribution of C.parthenoxylon. Evaluation of the impact of climate on its distribution under different climate scenarios in the past (Last Glacial Maximum and Mid-Holocene), in the present (Worldclim) and in the future (using four climate change scenarios: ACCESS, MIROC6, EC-Earth3-Veg and MRI-ESM2-0) revealed that of C.parthenoxylon would likely expand to the northeast, while a large area of central Vietnam will gradually lose its adaptive capacity by 2100.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia. It results in cortical thickness changes and is associated with a decline in cognition and behaviour. Such decline affects multiple important day-to-day functions, including memory, language, orientation, judgment and problem-solving. Recent research has made important progress in identifying brain regions associated with single outcomes, such as individual AD status and general cognitive decline. The complex projection from multiple brain areas to multiple AD outcomes, however, remains poorly understood. This makes the assessment and especially the prediction of multiple AD outcomes - each of which may unveil an integral yet different aspect of the disease - challenging, particularly when some are not strongly correlated. Here, uniting residual learning, partial least squares (PLS), and predictive modelling, we develop an explainable, generalisable, and reproducible method called the Residual Partial Least Squares Learning (the re-PLS Learning) to (1) chart the pathways between large-scale multivariate brain cortical thickness data (inputs) and multivariate disease and behaviour data (outcomes); (2) simultaneously predict multiple, non-pairwise-correlated outcomes; (3) control for confounding variables (e.g., age and gender) affecting both inputs and outcomes and the pathways in-between; (4) perform longitudinal AD disease status classification and disease severity prediction. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method against a variety of alternatives on data from AD patients, subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and cognitively normal individuals (n=1,196) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Our results unveil pockets of brain areas in the temporal, frontal, sensorimotor, and cingulate areas whose cortical thickness may be respectively associated with declines in different cognitive and behavioural subdomains in AD. Finally, we characterise re-PLS' geometric interpretation and mathematical support for delivering meaningful neurobiological insights and provide an open software package (re-PLS) available at https://github.com/thanhvd18/rePLS.

Recently, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as having an important role in the next wave of technology due to their large potential applications in energy harvesting and smart sensing. Recognizing this, a device based on TENGs, which can solve some of the problems in the liquid flow measurement process, was considered. In this paper, a new method to measure the liquid flow rate through a pipe which is based on the triboelectric effect is reported. A single-electrode flowing liquid-based TENG (FL-TENG) was developed, comprising a silicon pipe and an electrode coated with a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The measured electrical responses show that the FL-TENG can generate a peak open-circuit voltage and peak short-circuit current of 2.6 V and 0.3 µA when DI water is passed through an 8 mm cell FL-TENG at a flow rate of 130 mL/min and reach their maximum values of 17.8 V-1.57 µA at a flow rate of 1170 mL/min, respectively. Importantly, the FL-TENG demonstrates a robust linear correlation between its electrical output and the flow rate, with the correlation coefficient R2 ranging from 0.943 to 0.996. Additionally, this study explores the potential of the FL-TENG to serve as a self-powered sensor power supply in future applications, emphasizing its adaptability as both a flow rate sensor and an energy harvesting device.

Pulsating flow, a common term in industrial and medical contexts, necessitates precise water flow measurement for evaluating hydrodynamic system performance. Addressing challenges in measurement technologies, particularly for pulsating flow, we propose a flowing liquid-based triboelectric nanogenerator (FL-TENG). To generate sufficient energy for a self-powered device, we employed a fluorinated functionalized technique on a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to enhance the performance of FL-TENG. The results attained a maximum instantaneous power density of 50.6 µW/cm2, and the energy output proved adequate to illuminate 10 white LEDs. Regression analysis depicting the dependence of the output electrical signals on water flow revealed a strong linear relationship between the voltage and flow rate with high sensitivity. A high correlation coefficient R2 within the range from 0.951 to 0.998 indicates precise measurement accuracy for the proposed FL-TENG. Furthermore, the measured time interval between two voltage peaks precisely corresponds to the period of pulsating flow, demonstrating that the output voltage can effectively sense pulsating flow based on voltage and the time interval between two voltage peaks. This work highlights the utility of FL-TENG as a self-powered pulsating flow rate sensor.

Introduction: Public engagement is increasingly promoted in the scientific community. Although there are studies about researchers' perspectives on public engagement, these are predominantly from Global North settings and there is little data from the context of Southeast Asia. The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a clinical and public health research programme with sites in Vietnam, Nepal and Indonesia. There is a dedicated public engagement team, and it is recognised as an important part of the research process.   Methods: Through this study we explored the views and needs of local researchers with regards to practicing public engagement. We obtained opinions of 70 researchers through an online survey with both open-ended and closed-ended questions.   Results: Most researchers perceived public engagement as improving public science literacy, rather than supporting public participation in science and research. While the participants largely see public engagement as a necessary practice, they experienced four main barriers to taking part in public engagement: time, lack of capacity, lack of support and personal perceptions. Most participants indicated they had somewhat to low confidence to communicate about science to the public. Experience, skill and knowledge, and personal preference emerged as factors that influence their perceived confidence for science communication. In our analysis, experience appeared to be the main factor contributing to researchers' high confidence.   Recommendations: We recommended to support researchers by not only providing them with training for skills and knowledge, but also with opportunities to conduct public engagement, and a range of methods to suit their personal styles of communicating. It is also evident that more support is needed to build an enabling institutional environment that gives researchers professional recognition for their engagement work. This study, while modest in its scope, has informed our approach to supporting researcher-led engagement, and may guide other institutes wishing to improve this.

Recently, there has been a growing need for sensors that can operate autonomously without requiring an external power source. This is especially important in applications where conventional power sources, such as batteries, are impractical or difficult to replace. Self-powered sensors have emerged as a promising solution to this challenge, offering a range of benefits such as low cost, high stability, and environmental friendliness. One of the most promising self-powered sensor technologies is the L-S TENG, which stands for liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerator. This technology works by harnessing the mechanical energy generated by external stimuli such as pressure, touch, or vibration, and converting it into electrical energy that can be used to power sensors and other electronic devices. Therefore, self-powered sensors based on L-S TENGs-which provide numerous benefits such as rapid responses, portability, cost-effectiveness, and miniaturization-are critical for increasing living standards and optimizing industrial processes. In this review paper, the working principle with three basic modes is first briefly introduced. After that, the parameters that affect L-S TENGs are reviewed based on the properties of the liquid and solid phases. With different working principles, L-S TENGs have been used to design many structures that function as self-powered sensors for pressure/force change, liquid flow motion, concentration, and chemical detection or biochemical sensing. Moreover, the continuous output signal of a TENG plays an important role in the functioning of real-time sensors that is vital for the growth of the Internet of Things.

There are more than 900 genetic syndromes associated with oral manifestations. These syndromes can have serious health implications, and left undiagnosed, can hamper treatment and prognosis later in life. About 6.67% of the population will develop a rare disease during their lifetime, some of which are difficult to diagnose. The establishment of a data and tissue bank of rare diseases with oral manifestations in Quebec will help medical professionals identify the genes involved, will improve knowledge on the rare genetic diseases, and will also lead to improved patient management. It will also allow samples and information sharing with other clinicians and investigators. As an example of a condition requiring additional research, dental ankylosis is a condition in which the tooth's cementum fuses to the surrounding alveolar bone. This can be secondary to traumatic injury but is often idiopathic, and the genes involved in the idiopathic cases, if any, are poorly known. To date, patients with both identified and unidentified genetic etiology for their dental anomalies were recruited through dental and genetics clinics for the study. They underwent sequencing of selected genes or exome sequencing depending on the manifestation. We recruited 37 patients and we identified pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in WNT10A, EDAR, AMBN, PLOD1, TSPEAR, PRKAR1A, FAM83H, PRKACB, DLX3, DSPP, BMP2, TGDS. Our project led to the establishment of the Quebec Dental Anomalies Registry, which will help researchers, medical and dental practitioners alike understand the genetics of dental anomalies and facilitate research collaborations into improved standards of care for patients with rare dental anomalies and any accompanying genetic diseases.

Background and Aim: Vietnam's dairy sector is in its early phase of large-scale farming development. Therefore, mastitis in cows is always a concern to farm owners. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility, resistance, and virulence-related genes of Escherichia coli isolated from bovine mastitis in Nghe An province of Vietnam. Materials and Methods: Fifty E. coli strains were isolated from the clinical cases and subjected to this study. All isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by the disk-diffusion method, as described by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Antimicrobial and virulence genes were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction with specific primers. Results: All isolates were resistant to lincomycin and sulfamethoxazole and sensitive to gentamicin, while other antimicrobials showed resistance from 2% to 90%. Multidrug resistance was confirmed in 46% of isolates, and none of them were identified as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producers. From fifty strains tested for antimicrobial and virulence genes, six isolates harbored tetA, 6 tetB, 13 sul1, 15 sul2, 2 Intimin (eae), 1 iutA, and 3 stx2. Conclusion: Antimicrobial and multidrug resistances are the main virulence factors of E. coli isolated from bovine mastitis in Vietnam. The virulence genes encoding adhesion, siderophore, Shiga-toxin-producing, and antimicrobials resistant were first reported in Vietnam with low prevalence and contributed to the pathogenesis.

This work introduces a novel approach for enhancing the performance of a triboelectric generator (TEG) by using a solid-liquid interface-treated foam (SLITF) as its active layer, combined with two metal contacts of different work functions. SLITF is made by absorbing water into a cellulose foam, which enables charges generated by friction energy during the sliding motion to be separated and transferred through the conductive path formed by the hydrogen-bonded network of water molecules. Unlike traditional TEGs, the SLITF-TEG demonstrates an impressive current density of 3.57 A/m2 and can harvest electric power up to 0.174 W/m2 with an induced voltage of approximately 0.55 V. The device generates a direct current in the external circuit, eliminating the limitations of low current density and alternating current found in traditional TEGs. By connecting six-unit cells of SLITF-TEG in series and parallel, the peak voltage and current can be increased up to 3.2 V and 12.5 mA, respectively. Furthermore, the SLITF-TEG has the potential to serve as a self-powered vibration sensor with high accuracy (R2 = 0.99). The findings demonstrate the significant potential of the SLITF-TEG approach for efficiently harvesting low-frequency mechanical energy from the natural environment, with broad implications for a range of applications.

Research capacity is increasing in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with progressive development in the range and complexity of studies being undertaken, often in collaboration with high-income country partners. Although senior local stakeholders are typically involved in ensuring that research is conducted according to accepted standards for ethical and scientific quality, to date there has been little exploration of the views of younger generations around the ethics of research involving human subjects. We present our protocol to establish a longitudinal mixed-methods student cohort at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, that is investigating students' views around the ethics of clinical and public-health oriented research. We use a synergistic approach involving initial deliberative engagement activities ( e.g. science cafes, debates) to inform participants about complex concepts, prior to formal quantitative and qualitative methods (surveys, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews) that are designed to explore the students' views in detail. We focus in particular on dengue research, i.e. research that addresses a locally relevant disease with which the students are likely familiar, and probe their thoughts on such themes as appropriate remuneration for research participants, involvement of vulnerable groups, use of human challenge trials in LMICs etc. A snapshot of the cohort and its activities after one year is also presented; among 429 active students, primarily from the Faculty of Medicine, the proportions of male and female students were similar, the majority were from southern or central Vietnam where dengue is endemic, and available data indicates the cohort to be representative of the expected spectrum of socioeconomic groups. The cohort provides a unique resource to investigate the views of young people on medical ethics, an important but hitherto underrepresented group in such discussions. Feedback indicates a clear interest in contributing thoughts and ideas to the development of clinical research in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Advances in technology enable patients on home parenteral nutrition (HPN) to manage their treatment more independently and safely. eHealth is a promising application of electronic means in healthcare, aimed at improving and simplifying processes and connecting the different parties involved. A thorough understanding of the attitudes and expectations of patients on HPN towards eHealth is a prerequisite for a successful implementation. However, to the best of our knowledge, such a survey preceding the implementation of HPN specific eHealth care has never been conducted. The objective of this preliminary survey is the acquisition of insights on the attitudes and expectations of patients on HPN towards eHealth. Resulting findings then serve as the basis for the design of an eHealth platform to facilitate communication among those involved in HPN care, improve the HPN management, and safeguard and monitor the treatment. METHODS: We conducted a survey on the attitudes and expectations of patients towards an envisioned eHealth platform for HPN. Patients were recruited from large Swiss hospitals by their treating physician or directly by the research team. The surveys were conducted between September 2020 and October 2021 by structured personal interviews based on a questionnaire. RESULTS: We included 35 patients on HPN (21 [60%] females) treated in ambulant care of 4 hospitals. They had a median (interquartile range) age of 55 (18) years and a median (interquartile range) duration of parenteral nutrition of 1.3 (3.1) years. Most patients (n = 30, 86%) were equipped with a smartphone, tablet, or computer and 22 (63%) used apps and rated themselves as proficient with the corresponding digital device. A majority of patients rated the following aspects and features of the platform as important: Data collection and storage (n = 29, 83%), checklists for PN, catheter, and infusion pump handling (n = 28, 80%), video instructions (n = 27, 77%), and videoconferencing with physicians (n = 25, 71%). Most patients (n = 26, 74%) were willing to enter data into the platform themselves. The type of data to be entered should be defined on an individual basis. CONCLUSIONS: Patients on HPN are open to videoconference consultations and using an eHealth platform. Two-thirds have the necessary technical skills including suitable digital devices for an eHealth care. We identified key features of an eHealth platform to improve HPN management.

Background: Dysphagia is considered an important issue in managing and treating acute stroke, but there are currently no studies investigating this issue, especially for patients with acute ischemic stroke in Vietnam. Thus, we conducted this study to determine the prevalence of dysphagia and associated factors of dysphagia in patients with acute ischemic stroke in Vietnam. Materials and methods: From June 2020 to January 2022, a cross-sectional study of patients with acute ischemic stroke was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Vietnam. The dysphagia was evaluated through a bedside screening test using the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS). Factors associated with dysphagia were analysed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of dysphagia in patients with acute ischemic stroke was 71.6%, in which the mild, moderate and severe dysphagia accounted for 37.5%, 12.4% and 21.7%, respectively. Dysphagia significantly associated with age group 50-59 (OR = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.2-4.2), age group 60-69 (OR = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.04-3.4), age group >70 (OR = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.2-4.2), brainstem (OR = 4.0, 95% CI: 2.1-7.4), having communication disorder (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1-7.4) and having facial paralysis (OR = 17.9, 95% CI: 12.0-26.8). Conclusion: Our study showed that the prevalence of dysphagia is high among patients with acute ischemic stroke in Vietnam. Intervention solutions should focus more on patient groups of higher age group, brainstem stroke, communication disorder and facial paralysis.

RESUMO

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) associated vasculitis comprises a rare entity of disorders that affects primarily small and medium-sized blood vessels. Since first documented in 1897, we have come a long way trying to understand the pathogenesis and finding an optimal treatment regimen. The pathogenesis of ANCA vasculitis is not well understood and despite many advances in treatment, the morbidity and mortality remains high. Over the last decade, there have been many advancements toward elucidating the pathogenesis, optimizing current therapies, and discovering new medicines. Presently, one trend is aimed at minimizing the adverse effects of glucocorticoids by reducing their use without sacrificing efficacy and safety. A new medicine targeting the alternative complement system has emerged and intends to replace glucocorticoids. Here, we review three articles that describe these new trends in the management of ANCA vasculitis.
