RESUMO

Cattle mange causes extreme itchiness, and the associated stress is an animal welfare concern that leads to economic losses due to decreased cattle productivity and deworming costs. This study investigated the reason why Chorioptic mites, C. bovis and C. texanus, preferentially infest the tail root region (rTR) and performed histological and biochemical analysis focusing on the volatile components of host odors that serve as the starting point for infestation of parasitic arthropods. Skin samples were taken from the rTR, lateral abdominal, and central masseteric, with the latter two designated as comparison sites. The two and three-dimensional histological analysis measured each sebaceous and sweat gland percentage per unit volume. The q-PCR analyzed the expression levels of ALDH1A1 and LOC785756, which are genes associated with volatile odoriferous compounds that serve as repellency and attractive messengers for ticks. Immunohistochemistry stained three sites with anti-androgen binding protein beta-like (ABPß-like), encoded by LOC785756, antibody. The three-dimensional analysis showed that sebaceous glands in the rTR tend to be more continuous and existed in larger masses than in other regions. The expression level of LOC785756 was significantly higher in the rTR, and immunohistochemistry revealed the presence of ABPß-like in the sebaceous gland with strong positive signals in the rTR. These results suggest that C. bovis/texanus selectively infests the rTR because that skin has well-developed sebaceous glands, including a large amount of ABPß-like, which acts as a mite attractant.

RESUMO

Clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the diaphragm is rare, with an origin that is reported to be associated with malignant transformation of extraperitoneal endometriosis. Lynch syndrome (LS) is an autosomal dominant hereditary cancer syndrome caused by germline pathogenic variants in one of the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes, MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 and PMS2. Women with LS have a significantly increased lifetime risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer. CCC is a common histology of endometriosis- and LS-associated malignancy. The present study describes the case of a 51-year-old woman with an intra-abdominal mass found during a routine physical examination. The patient had undergone total hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy for atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) and ovarian endometriosis, respectively, 3 years previously. Enhanced computed tomography showed a mass on the surface of the liver. Laparoscopic examination of the abdominal cavity revealed a tumor on the underside of the right diaphragm, which was then surgically excised. Pathological examination of the excised tumor, along with immunohistochemistry, led to a diagnosis of CCC. Since LS was suspected due to the genetic family history of the patient, microsatellite instability analysis was performed on the diaphragmatic tumor, and the results were positive. Immunohistochemistry was performed for MMR proteins in AEH and CCC cells, both of which revealed loss of MSH2 and MSH6 expression. Following detailed genetic counseling, genetic testing of MMR genes was performed, revealing a germline pathogenic variant in MSH2 (c.1000C>T, p.Gln344*), thus confirming the diagnosis of LS. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of concurrent diaphragmatic CCC and LS. Patients with LS and endometriosis are at risk of developing ovarian cancer or intra-abdominal malignant tumors. In addition, immunohistochemistry screening for MMR proteins should be considered in patients with AEH and a family history of LS-related cancer, to enable early clinical intervention in cases of endometrial cancer.

RESUMO

AIM: Ovarian serous carcinoma (OSC) and ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) are two major histological types of epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC), each with different biological features and clinical behaviors. Although immunostaining is commonly used for differential diagnosis between OSC and OCCC, correct identification of EOC with mixed-type histology is sometimes a diagnostic challenge. The aim of the present study was to explore candidate genes as potential diagnostic biomarkers that distinguish OSC from OCCC. METHODS: A total of 57 surgical specimens were obtained from EOC patients who had previously undergone primary debulking surgery. Total RNAs were extracted from fresh-frozen tissues of EOC patients, and were used for comprehensive gene expression analysis using DNA microarray technology. RESULTS: Ten candidate genes, FXYD2, TMEM101, GABARAPL1, ARG2, GLRX, RBPMS, GDF15, PPP1R3B, TOB1, and GSTM3 were up-regulated in OCCC compared to OSC. All EOC patients were divided into two groups according to hierarchical clustering using a 10-gene signature. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that the 10 candidate genes would be an excellent marker for distinguishing OSC from OCCC. Furthermore, the molecular signatures of the 10 genes may enlighten us on the differences in carcinogenesis, and provide a theoretical basis for OCCC's resistance to chemotherapy in the future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Polyadenosine 5'-diphosphoribose polymerase inhibitors (PARP-Is) are novel, effective agents for treating newly diagnosed epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). However, the effect of PARP-I on the progression of recurrent EOC has not yet been determined. In particular, there is limited evidence regarding retreatment with PARP-I for recurrent EOC that has progressed on PARP-I in the short term. CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old woman with a BRCA1 mutated EOC relapsed five months after starting olaparib maintenance following neoadjuvant chemotherapy and interval debulking surgery. Although the platinum-free interval was within six months, secondary cytoreductive surgery was performed because the tumor was locoregional. Following two cycles of weekly nedaplatin, niraparib induced a complete response, and the patient maintained a progression-free status for 15 months. CONCLUSION: Even with short-term progression on PARP-I, local control combined with different platinum agents and PARP-I can be used to achieve good responses.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This systematic review examined the effectiveness of soft denture relining (SDR) materials. STUDY SELECTION: A comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and ICHUSHI was conducted up to July 26, 2020. Target outcomes were patient satisfaction, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL), masticatory ability (MA), denture functional duration, residual ridge resorption (RRR), and microbial contamination. An organization specializing in literature searches performed the reference searches, and two reviewers independently selected the literature sources, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias. The reviewers resolved any disagreements concerning the assortment of literature sources through discussion. SDR included acrylic- and silicone-based materials, which were evaluated separately. RESULTS: Reviewers selected 7, 5, 11, 1, 4, and 6 studies to assess patient satisfaction, OHRQOL, MA, functional duration, RRR, and microbial contamination, respectively. The results confirmed that SDR improved patient satisfaction, OHRQOL, MA, and RRR. However, the functional duration of SDR material is shorter than that of hard denture relining (HDR) or acrylic resin material. Furthermore, SDR material is more susceptible to microbial contamination in the long term. The risk of bias for the included studies tended to be high because of specific issues (difficulty in blinding SDR versus HDR). CONCLUSIONS: For patients who wear complete dentures, SDR often provides beneficial outcomes such as pain reduction and recovery from MA. However, caution should be exercised regarding their use owing to insufficient functional duration and the possibility of microbial contamination during long-term use.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether the chest-to-head circumference ratio at birth was associated with breech presentation and transverse lie. We also described the obstetric management of such pregnancies in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional evaluation of data collected between January 2011 and March 2014 in a nationwide prospective birth cohort study, the JECS. We analyzed 83,822 non-anomalous singletons born at 34-41 weeks' gestation to mothers with no history of previous cesareans or uterine surgery. We defined low, normal (reference group), and high chest-to-head circumference ratios as <10th percentile, 10th to 90th percentiles, and >90th percentile, respectively. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for breech presentation and transverse lie. The timing and mode of delivery of such pregnancies were examined. RESULTS: Breech presentation was recorded in 2.6% and transverse lie in 0.2%. A low chest-to-head circumference ratio was associated with increased rate of breech presentation (5.2%; adjusted OR 2.36, 95% CI: 2.10-2.65) and transverse lie (0.3%; adjusted OR 2.33, 95% CI: 1.50-3.60), whereas a high ratio was linked to reduced breech presentation (1.1%; adjusted OR 0.51, 95% CI: 0.39-0.66). Subgroup analysis of children delivered by cesarean (n = 7971) showed a similar association, albeit with slightly reduced strength for breech presentation. Eighty-three percent of breech births and 46.3% of transverse lie births occurred at 37-38 weeks' gestation. Cesarean section was performed in 96.8% of breech presentations and 63.4% of transverse-lie ones. CONCLUSIONS: These findings imply that the fetal chest-to-head circumference ratio may influence presentation at birth.

RESUMO

Subthreshold depression impairs young people's quality of life and places them at greater risk of developing major depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach for addressing such depressive states. This study identified subtypes of university students with subthreshold depression and revealed discrete profiles of five CBT skills: self-monitoring, cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, assertive communication, and problem solving. Using data from the Healthy Campus Trial (registration number: UMINCTR-000031307), a hierarchical clustering analysis categorized 1,080 students into three clusters: Reflective Low-skilled, Non-reflective High-skilled, and Non-reflective Low-skilled students. Non-reflective Low-skilled students were significantly more depressed than other students (p < .001). The severity of depression seemed to be related to the combination of self-monitoring skills and other CBT skills. Considering the high prevalence of poor self-monitoring skills in persons with autism, the most severe depression was observed in the significant association between Non-reflective Low-skilled students and autistic traits (p = .008). These findings suggest that subthreshold depression can be categorized into three subtypes based on CBT skill profiles. The assessment of autistic traits is also suggested when we provide CBT interventions for Non-reflective Low-skilled students.

RESUMO

Purpose: It is difficult to change pre-pregnancy eating habits, yet establishing healthy eating habits before pregnancy is important for preventing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This study aimed to examine whether the weight-loss behavior of avoiding between-meal and midnight snacking in teenagers is associated with a reduction in the risk of subsequent GDM. Methods: We used a dataset (jecs-an-20,180,131) from a nationwide, prospective birth cohort study, the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). We included 89,227 (85.7% of the total) mother-infant pairs with live births. Participants in their second or third trimester were asked to report their weight-loss behavior during their teenage years. The prevalence of GDM was investigated. Differences in maternal characteristics were examined using chi-square tests. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were constructed to assess the associations of various maternal characteristics with the weight-loss behavior of avoiding between-meal and midnight snacking during teenage years. Results: A total of 2,066 (2.3%) participants had GDM. Weight-loss behavior in teenagers was associated with a decreased risk of GDM. Among participants with normal weight or overweight prior to pregnancy, the adjusted odds ratios were 0.79 (95% confidence interval, 0.70-0.89) and 0.82 (95% confidence interval, 0.69-0.98), respectively. Conclusions: The results suggest that teenage weight-loss behaviors, such as avoiding between-meal and midnight snacking, are associated with a decreased risk of developing GDM. RESUMO

Traditionally, gynecological cancers have been classified based on histology. Since remarkable advancements in next-generation sequencing technology have enabled the exploration of somatic mutations in various cancer types, comprehensive sequencing efforts have revealed the genomic landscapes of some common forms of human cancer. The genomic features of various gynecological malignancies have been reported by several studies of large-scale genomic cohorts, including The Cancer Genome Atlas. Although recent comprehensive genomic profiling tests, which can detect hundreds of genetic mutations at a time from cancer tissues or blood samples, have been increasingly used as diagnostic clinical biomarkers and in therapeutic management decisions, germline pathogenic variants associated with hereditary cancers can also be detected using this test. Gynecological cancers are closely related to genetic factors, with approximately 5% of endometrial cancer cases and 20% of ovarian cancer cases being caused by germline pathogenic variants. Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome and Lynch syndrome are the two major cancer susceptibility syndromes among gynecological cancers. In addition, several other hereditary syndromes have been reported to be associated with gynecological cancers. In this review, we highlight the genes for somatic mutation and germline pathogenic variants commonly seen in gynecological cancers. We first describe the relationship between clinicopathological attributes and somatic mutated genes. Subsequently, we discuss the characteristics and clinical management of inherited cancer syndromes resulting from pathogenic germline variants in gynecological malignancies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Various neoplasms, including neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), can arise from the presacral space. Most presacral lesions are detected due to symptoms arising from tumor growth. However, diagnosing small, asymptomatic presacral tumors is challenging because of their unique location. CASE REPORT A 63-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis C underwent follow-up after achieving a sustained virological response. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed multiple new hyperechoic masses in the liver. Physical and laboratory examinations, including tumor marker analysis, yielded unremarkable results. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated metastatic liver tumors but failed to identify the primary site of these lesions. The hepatic mass was biopsied, leading to a diagnosis of grade 2 neuroendocrine tumor. 111In-pentetreotide somatostatin receptor scintigraphy revealed significant radiotracer accumulation in multiple hepatic masses, several bones, and a small presacral space lesion. Pathological examination of the presacral lesion confirmed a grade 2 neuroendocrine tumor, similar to the hepatic mass. Review of a CT scan performed 4 years earlier indicated a small cyst-like lesion in the presacral space suspected of being a developmental cyst; however, the presence of cystic components was not confirmed pathologically. The patient was diagnosed with a primary presacral neuroendocrine tumor, which might have originated from a developmental cyst, with multiple liver metastases. Chemotherapy with everolimus was initiated, and the clinical course has been uneventful. CONCLUSIONS We report a rare neuroendocrine tumor arising from the presacral space with multiple liver metastases. The presacral space should be examined when a NEN with an unknown primary site is found.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Burnout and depression among medical students is linked to serious problems that require appropriate solutions. Subthreshold autism traits or autistic-like traits (ALTs) may be possible factors associated with burnout and depression. The effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for burnout and depression has been widely reported. The treatment aims to improve psychological flexibility, a concept indicating engagement in personal value-based behaviors without avoiding uncomfortable private experiences. This study examined whether ALTs were associated with burnout or depression among medical students during clinical clerkships in Japan, and then investigated what psychological flexibility processes might mediate these associations. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to 284 medical students at Nagoya City University School of Medical Sciences who had been in clinical clerkships for 10 months or longer. Linear multiple regressions were performed with each burnout factor or depression as the outcome variable using validated tools measuring burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), ALT (Autism-Spectrum Quotient Japanese version-21), and psychological flexibility processes (Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire-7 and Valuing Questionnaire). Additionally, a mediation analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling. RESULTS: A linear multiple regression analysis that controlled for age and gender found that ALTs were significantly associated with lower personal accomplishment, a factor of burnout, and depression. Lower personal accomplishment was also associated with males and lower progress toward values of the psychological flexibility process. Depression was also associated with males and higher cognitive fusion, lower progress towards values, and higher obstruction to values of the psychological flexibility process. Surprisingly, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were not significantly associated with ALTs. The mediation analysis revealed that the relationship between ALTs and personal accomplishment was partially mediated by a process of progress toward values, while the relationship between ALTs and depression was partially mediated by both processes of progress toward values and cognitive fusion. CONCLUSIONS: ALTs were significantly associated with lower personal accomplishment of burnout and depression among medical students in clinical clerkships. Consideration should be given to the psychological flexibility processes that focus on interventions targeting psychological flexibility for medical students with ALTs to reduce burnout and depression.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer has the worst outcome among gynecological malignancies; therefore, biomarkers that could contribute to the early diagnosis and/or prognosis prediction are urgently required. In the present study, we focused on the secreted protein spondin-1 (SPON1) and clarified the prognostic relevance in ovarian cancer. METHODS: We developed a monoclonal antibody (mAb) that selectively recognizes SPON1. Using this specific mAb, we determined the expression of SPON1 protein in the normal ovary, serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), and ovarian cancer tissues, as well as in various normal adult tissues by immunohistochemistry, and verified its clinicopathological significance in ovarian cancer. RESULTS: The normal ovarian tissue was barely positive for SPON1, and no immunoreactive signals were detected in other healthy tissues examined, which was in good agreement with data obtained from gene expression databases. By contrast, upon semi-quantification, 22 of 242 ovarian cancer cases (9.1%) exhibited high SPON1 expression, whereas 64 (26.4%), 87 (36.0%), and 69 (28.5%) cases, which were designated as SPON1-low, possessed the moderate, weak, and negative SPON1 expression, respectively. The STIC tissues also possessed SPON1-positive signals. The 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate in the SPON1-high group (13.6%) was significantly lower than that in the SPON1-low group (51.2%). In addition, high SPON1 expression was significantly associated with several clinicopathological variables. Multivariable analysis revealed that high SPON1 was an independent prognostic factor for RFS of ovarian cancer. CONCLUSIONS: SPON1 represents a prognostic biomarker for ovarian cancer, and the anti-SPON1 mAb could be valuable as an outcome predictor.

RESUMO

The patient was a 68-year-old male. Pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD)for papillary carcinoma was performed. Computed tomography(CT)3 months after surgery revealed the migration of a lost Pit-stent into the bile duct. However, there were no symptoms. On CT 2 years after surgery, the lost stent had spontaneously fallen off. However, hepaticolithiasis was observed, and lithotripsy was performed using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP). A pancreatic fistula after PD is an important complication. To prevent pancreatic fistulae, pancreatic stenting at the site of PD is performed in many cases. The postoperative in vivo kinetics of a lost stent remains to be clarified. Several case reports on complications have been published. In this study, we report a patient in whom the migration of a lost Pit-stent into the intrahepatic bile duct after PD led to hepaticolithiasis, and review the literature.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is reported that broilers with 'wooden breast' have poor processing properties, such as low binding and water-holding capacities. However, the reason for the poor functional characteristics has not been clarified. In this study, myosin was extracted from a wooden breast. Its physicochemical properties were investigated to clarify the relationship between the structure and physicochemical properties of the heating gel of myosin obtained from the wooden breast. RESULTS: The turbidity of myosin solution extracted from wooden breast increased with increase in the heat treatment to a higher value than that from the normal breast meat myosin. The solubility of myosin collected from a wooden breast after heating decreased like normal breast muscle myosin. The surface hydrophobicity of myosin removed from wooden breast increased continually above 60 °C, unlike the change in surface hydrophobicity of normal breast myosin. The free thiol group of myosin extracted from the wooden breast was higher than normal breast myosin before and after heating. The apparent elasticity of heat-induced gels and chicken meat sausages was significantly lower in sausages and gel with wooden breast than normal ones (P < 0.05). The microstructure of the heated gel of normal myosin showed a fine network structure. In contrast, the heat-induced gel of wooden breast-extracted myosin showed a structure with loosely connected aggregates and many gaps. CONCLUSION: The coarseness of the internal gel structure of myosin extracted from wooden breast was shown to affect the apparent elasticity of the gel and sausages made from the chicken meat. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

In the egg industry, common reproductive disorders, such as internal laying and egg-bound syndrome, not only reduce egg productivity but also cause deaths in severe cases. In this study, we focused on the oviduct histology of the pathogenesis of internal laying and egg-bound syndrome. We divided the aged laying hens into four groups according to the observation of the abdominal cavity and oviductal lumen: healthy, internal laying, egg-bound, and intercurrent. The percentages of healthy, internal laying, egg-bound, and intercurrent groups were 55%, 17.5%, 15%, and 12.5%, respectively. In all parts of the oviduct (i.e., infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, and uterus), the oviductal epithelium was composed of ciliated epithelial cells and secretory cells. The epithelial region lacking cilia was larger in the entire oviduct of the internal laying, and intercurrent groups than in the healthy group. In the internal laying, egg-bound, and intercurrent groups, significant T-cell infiltration was observed in the lamina propria of the entire oviduct. The morphological alteration of ciliated epithelial cells in the oviducts caused by inflammation may be the underlying cause of the pathogenesis of internal laying and egg-bound syndrome.

RESUMO

Oocyte transportation by the oviduct involves the interaction between ciliated epithelial cells and cumulus cells. To determine whether the quality of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) changes the transportation property of COCs, we compared the transportation velocity of COCs (TVC) by the infundibulum ex vivo with various combinations of infundibula and COCs collected from different mice. We used young and aged C57BL/6N and MRL/MpJ, and MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr mice as the strains with intact female reproductive function and the systemic autoimmune disease model exhibiting oocyte pick-up dysfunction owing to the morphofunctional abnormality of ciliated epithelium, respectively. The TVC of aged MRL strains was less than that of aged C57BL/6N mice, suggesting that aging affects the transportation of COCs in MRL strains. The TVC of aged MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr mice was the least among all examined combinations, whereas the TVC accelerated when the infundibulum or COCs were collected from other strains. These results indicate that the transportation property of COCs is determined not only by the ciliary function in the infundibulum but also by the properties of COCs.

RESUMO

Loss-of-function mutations in carbohydrate sulfotransferase 14 (CHST14) cause musculocontractural Ehlers-Danlos syndrome-CHST14 (mcEDS-CHST14), characterized by multiple congenital malformations and progressive connective tissue fragility-related manifestations in the cutaneous, skeletal, cardiovascular, visceral and ocular system. The replacement of dermatan sulfate chains on decorin proteoglycan with chondroitin sulfate chains is proposed to lead to the disorganization of collagen networks in the skin. However, the pathogenic mechanisms of mcEDS-CHST14 are not fully understood, partly due to the lack of in vitro models of this disease. In the present study, we established in vitro models of fibroblast-mediated collagen network formation that recapacitate mcEDS-CHST14 pathology. Electron microscopy analysis of mcEDS-CHST14-mimicking collagen gels revealed an impaired fibrillar organization that resulted in weaker mechanical strength of the gels. The addition of decorin isolated from patients with mcEDS-CHST14 and Chst14-/- mice disturbed the assembly of collagen fibrils in vitro compared to control decorin. Our study may provide useful in vitro models of mcEDS-CHST14 to elucidate the pathomechanism of this disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Remnant gastric cancer (RGC) encompasses all cancers arising from the remnant stomach. Various studies have reported on RGC and its prognosis, but no consensus on its surgical treatment and postoperative management has been reached. Moreover, the correlation between the clinicopathological characteristics and long-term outcomes of RGC remains unclear. This study investigated the clinicopathological factors associated with the long-term survival of RGC patients. METHODS: The medical records (March 1993-September 2020) of 104 RGC patients from Tokyo Medical University Hospital database were analyzed. Of these 104 patients, the medical records of 63 patients who underwent surgical curative resection were analyzed using R. Kaplan-Meier plots of cumulative incidence of RGC were made. Differences in survival rates were compared using the log-rank test. Prognostic factors were analyzed using multivariate Cox regression analysis (P < .05). RESULTS: Of the 104 RGC patients, 63 underwent total remnant stomach excision. The median time from the first surgery to the total excision was 10 years. The 5-year survival rate of the 63 RGC patients was .55 ((95% CI); .417-.671). The clinicopathological factors that were significantly associated with the long-term outcome of the RGC patients were tumor diameter (≥3.5 cm), presence or absence of combined resection of multiple organs, tumor invasion (deeper than T2), TNM stage, and postoperative morbidity. The multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that tumor invasion depth was the only independent prognostic factor for RGC patients [HR (95% CI): 5.49 (2.629-11.5), P ≤ .005]. CONCLUSIONS: Among prognostic factors, tumor invasion depth was the only independent factor affecting RGC's long-term outcome.

RESUMO

Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease that affects women of reproductive age in which the uterine endometrium grows outside the uterus. Origin of the ectopic endometrium is thought to be the retrograde endometrium through the oviducts. However, factors that determine the adherence and proliferation of the ectopic endometrium have not been revealed. Importantly, systemic autoimmune diseases are considered a key factor in the endometriosis onset. Herein, we established a surgical endometriosis rodent model using autoimmune disease-prone MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr (MRL/lpr) and MRL/+ mice to provide basic evidence of the relationship between autoimmune disease and endometriosis. Endometriosis lesions were successfully induced in two regions after transplanting uterine tissues from donor mice into the peritoneal cavity of recipient mice: the peritoneum or adipose tissue around the transplantation point (proximal lesions) and the gastrosplenic ligament or intestinal mesentery far from the transplantation site (distal lesions). Distal lesions were observed only in MRL/lpr mice, whereas endometriosis lesions showed no genotype- or region-related differences in the histology and distribution of sex hormone receptors and T cells. In contrast, transplanted uterine tissues in donor MRL/lpr mice exhibited a large infiltration of T cells in the lamina propria. Splenomegaly was more common in recipient than that in donor MRL/lpr mice. These results suggest that the infiltration of endogenous T cells in the endometrium alters the growth features of ectopic endometrium, possibly affecting the severity of endometriosis in patients with systemic autoimmune diseases.
