This study developed a biodegradable food film, incorporating bioactive components of Polygonatum cyrtonema extracted using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) into a matrix of chitosan and soy protein isolate. The films containing varying concentrations (0 %-5 %) of P. cyrtonema extract (PCE) were characterized. The addition of PCE improved the mechanical (+25.9 MPa for tensile strength), optical (+11.29 mm-1 for opacity), and thermal stability (-14.39 % for weight loss) of the films. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging rates increased by approximately 1.1 times and 0.5 times, respectively, and malondialdehyde formation reduced by 8 %. The films also effectively inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli. The films showed complete biodegradability after 7 days. Using the NADES-PCE coated film reduced the weight loss of sweet cherries by 41.04 % while significantly decreasing the loss of hardness, total phenols, vitamin C, total soluble solids, and titratable acidity, thereby considerably extending the storage life of the sweet cherries. Overall, this study developed a new environmentally friendly packaging material and improved the functionality of the packaging film by leveraging natural plant extracts, demonstrating tremendous potential in the field of food preservation and packaging.

Our previous research reported the influence of 50 µM selenium (Se) on the cytosolization (endocytosis) pathway, which in turn stimulates the growth and development of Bombyx mori. Lately, dynamin is recognized as one of the key proteins in endocytosis. To explore the underlying mechanisms of Se impact, the dynamin gene was knocked down by injecting siRNAs (Dynamin-1, Dynamin-2, and Dynamin-3). This was followed by an analysis of the target gene and levels of silk protein genes, as well as growth and developmental indices, Se-enrichment capacity, degree of oxidative damage, and antioxidant capacity of B. mori. Our findings showed a considerable decrease in the relative expression of the dynamin gene in all tissues 24 h after the interference and a dramatic decrease in the silkworm body after 48 h. RNAi dynamin gene decreased the silkworm body weight, cocoon shell weight, and the ratio of cocoon. In the meantime, malondialdehyde level increased and glutathione level and superoxide dismutase/catalase activities decreased. 50 µM Se markedly ameliorated these growth and physiological deficits as well as decreases in dynamin gene expression. On the other hand, there were no significant effects on fertility (including produced eggs and laid eggs) between the interference and Se treatments. Additionally, the Se content in the B. mori increased after the dynamin gene interference. The dynamin gene was highly expressed in the silk gland and declined significantly after interference. Among the three siRNAs (Dynamin-1, Dynamin-2, and Dynamin-3), the dynamin-2 displayed the highest interference effects to target gene expression. Our results demonstrated that 50 µM Se was effective to prevent any adverse effects caused by dynamin knockdown in silkworms. This provides practical implications for B. mori breeding industry.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial cancer (EC) as one of the most prevalent malignancies in the female reproductive system, usually has a poor diagnosis and unfavorable health effects. Neferine (Nef), derived from the edible and medicinal lotus seed, has been known for its functional activity; however, its anti-cancer mechanism for EC remains elusive. PURPOSE: We explored the potential anti-cancer effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of Nef on EC. METHODS: The cytotoxicity was tested using MTT, and the cell cycle, apoptosis, Ca2+ levels, and the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were observed through flow cytometry. After Nef treatment, differences in miRNA expression were identified using miRNA-seq data. Furthermore, western blot and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were employed to identify the proteins associated with apoptosis in both mice and cells. RESULTS: Nef treatment led to Ishikawa cell apoptosis and blocked cell proliferation in the G2/M phase. In total, 101 significantly different miRNA (p 〈 0.05 and |logFC| 〉 1) were obtained and subjected to GO and KEGG enrichment analysis, which revealed the Ca2+ and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways pertaining to apoptosis. Nef treatment significantly changed intracellular Ca2+ levels and MMP, activating the endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) pathway and the expression of key proteins in the mitochondrial pathway. In addition, Nef also inhibited the expression of key proteins in the PI3K/AKT pathway, causing cell apoptosis. Moreover, in mouse tumor tissues, the expression of CHOP, Bcl-2, Caspase 3, Cyto-c, and p-AKT was also consistent with the results in vitro. CONCLUSION: Nef could block the cell cycle and induce the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway involving the Ca2+-mediated ERS pathway and the PI3K/AKT pathway, thereby inducing apoptosis in EC cells, confirming the potential role of Nef in the prevention and treatment of EC.

Objective: Chlorination is often used to disinfect recreational water in large amusement parks; however, the health hazards of chlorination disinfection by-products (DBPs) to occupational populations are unknown. This study aimed to assess the exposure status of chlorinated DBPs in recreational water and the health risks to employees of large amusement parks. Methods: Exposure parameters of employees of three large amusement parks in Shanghai were investigated using a questionnaire. Seven typical chlorinated DBPs in recreational water and spray samples were quantified by gas chromatography, and the health risks to amusement park employees exposed to chlorinated DBPs were evaluated according to the WHO's risk assessment framework. Results: Trichloroacetic acid, dibromochloromethane, bromodichloromethane, and dichloroacetic acid were detected predominantly in recreational water. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of the five DBPs did not exceed the risk thresholds. In addition, the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of mixed exposure to DBPs were within the acceptable risk limits. Conclusion: Typical DBPs were widely detected in recreational water collected from three large amusement parks in Shanghai; however, the health risks of DBPs and their mixtures were within acceptable limits.

The cartilaginous endplate (CEP) plays a pivotal role in facilitating the supply of nutrients and, transport of metabolic waste, as well as providing mechanical support for the intervertebral disc (IVD). Recent technological advances have led to a surge in MR imaging studies focused on the CEP. This article describes the anatomy and functions of the CEP as well as MRI techniques for both qualitative and quantitative assessment of the CEP. Effective CEP MR imaging sequences require two key features: high spatial resolution and relatively short echo time. High spatial resolution spoiled gradient echo (SPGR) and ultrashort echo time (UTE) sequences, fulfilling these requirements, are the basis for most of the sequences employed in CEP imaging. This article reviews existing sequences for qualitative CEP imaging, such as the fat-suppressed SPGR and UTE, dual-echo subtraction UTE, inversion recovery prepared and fat-suppressed UTE, and dual inversion recovery prepared UTE sequences. These sequences are employed together with other techniques for quantitative CEP imaging, including measurements of T2*, T2, T1, T1ρ, magnetization transfer, perfusion, and diffusion tensor parameters. Therapeutic options for addressing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) include the administration of an enema to reduce intestinal inflammation and alleviate associated symptoms. However, uncontrollable retention of enemas in the intestinal tract has posed a long-term challenge for improving their therapeutic efficacy and safety. Herein we have developed a protease-labile hydrogel system as an on-demand enema vehicle with tunable degradation and drug release rates in response to varying matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression. The system, composed of three tailored hydrogel networks, is crosslinked by poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) with 2-, 4- and 8-arms through dynamic hydrazone bonds to confer injectability and generate varying network connectivity. The retention time of the hydrogels can be tuned from 12 to 36 h in the intestine due to their different degradation behaviors induced by MMP-9. The drug-releasing rate of the hydrogels can be controlled from 0.0003 mg/h to 0.278 mg/h. In addition, injection of such hydrogels in vivo resulted in significant differences in therapeutic effects including MMP-9 consumption, colon tissue repair, reduced collagen deposition, and decreased macrophage cells, for treating a mouse model of acute colitis. Among them, GP-8/5-ASA exhibits the best performance. This study validates the effectiveness of the tailored design of hydrogel architecture in response to pathological microenvironment cues, representing a promising strategy for on-demand therapy of IBD. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The uncontrollable retention of enemas at the delivery site poses a long-term challenge for improving therapeutic efficacy in IBD patients. MMP-9 is highly expressed in IBD and correlates with disease severity. Therefore, an MMP-9-responsive GP hydrogel system was developed as an enema by linking multi-armed PEG and gelatin through hydrazone bonds. This forms a dynamic hydrogel characterized by in situ gelation, injectability, enhanced bio-adhesion, biocompatibility, controlled retention time, and regulated drug release. GP hydrogels encapsulating 5-ASA significantly improved the intestinal phenotype of acute IBD and demonstrated notable therapeutic differences with increasing PEG arms. This method represents a promising on-demand IBD therapy strategy and provides insights into treating diseases of varying severities using endogenous stimulus-responsive drug delivery systems.

The biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus (P) in river-lake systems presents significant challenges in tracing P sources, highlighting the importance of effective traceability approaches for formulating targeted management measures to mitigate lake eutrophication. In this study, we used the oxygen isotope of phosphate (δ18Op) as a tracer in the river-lake systems, establishing a tracing pathway from potential end-members, through inflow rivers, and eventually to the lake. Taking Dianshan Lake and its main inflow rivers as the study area, we measured δ18Op values of potential end-members, including domestic sewage treatment plant effluents, industrial effluents from phosphorus-related enterprises (printing and dyeing, electroplating, plastics, etc.), and farmland soils. Notably, the industrial effluent signatures ranged from 13.1 ‰ to 21.0 ‰ with an average of 16.8 ‰ ± 3.2 ‰, enriching the δ18Op threshold database. Using the MixSIAR model, it was found that phosphorus in the Jishuigang River primarily originated from agricultural non-point sources and domestic sewage in the dry season, while the Qiandengpu River, with a higher proportion of urban area, had a greater influence from domestic sewage and industrial effluents. Moreover, significant differences were observed between δ18Op values at the lake entrances of the inflow rivers (13.7 ‰ ± 1.0 ‰) and in acid-soluble phosphate of the lake sediments (9.9 ‰ ± 1.0 ‰). Isotopic tracing revealed that phosphorus in the lake originated from both external inputs (80.6 %) and internal release (19.4 %) in the dry season. Alongside pollutant flux calculations based on the hydrological conditions and water quality of the inflow rivers, our findings indicated that phosphorus in Dianshan Lake was mainly attributed to agricultural non-point sources, domestic sewage and sediment release in the dry season. This study provided novel insights into the identification of pollution sources in the river-lake systems, with broad implications for pollution control and environmental protection.

OBJECTIVE: To propose a deep learning-based low-field mobile MRI strategy for fast, high-quality, unshielded imaging using minimal hardware resources. METHODS: Firstly, we analyze the correlation of EMI signals between the sensing coil and the MRI coil to preliminarily verify the feasibility of active EMI shielding using a single sensing coil. Then, a powerful deep learning EMI elimination model is proposed, which can accurately predict the EMI components in the MRI coil signals using EMI signals from at least one sensing coil. Further, deep learning models with different task objectives (super-resolution and denoising) are strategically stacked for multi-level post-processing to enable fast and high-quality low-field MRI. Finally, extensive phantom and brain experiments were conducted on a home-built 0.2 T mobile brain scanner for the evaluation of the proposed strategy. RESULTS: 20 healthy volunteers were recruited to participate in the experiment. The results show that the proposed strategy enables the 0.2 T scanner to generate images with sufficient anatomical information and diagnostic value under unshielded conditions using a single sensing coil. In particular, the EMI elimination outperforms the state-of-the-art deep learning methods and numerical computation methods. In addition, 2 × super-resolution (DDSRNet) and denoising (SwinIR) techniques enable further improvements in imaging speed and quality. DISCUSSION: The proposed strategy enables low-field mobile MRI scanners to achieve fast, high-quality imaging under unshielded conditions using minimal hardware resources, which has great significance for the widespread deployment of low-field mobile MRI scanners.

The main bioavailable phenolics from of Gongju (GJ) and their mechanism for hepato-protection remain unclear. To select the GJ phenolics with high bioavailability, chrysanthemum digestion and Caco-2 cells were used and their hepato-protective potential were examined by using AML-12 cells. The digestive recovery and small intestinal transit rate of the main phenolic compounds ranged from 28.52 to 69.53% and 6.57% âˆ¼ 15.50%, respectively. Among them, chlorogenic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, and 1,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, showed higher small intestinal transit rates and digestive recoveries. Furthermore, we found that by increasing intracellular Catalase (CAT) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) viability and lowering Malondialdehyde (MDA) level (P < 0.05), 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid significantly mitigated the oxidative damage of AML-12 liver cells more than the other two phenolics. Our results demonstrated that 3,5-dicaffeoylquninic acid was the primary phenolic compounds in GJ that effectively reduced liver damage, providing a theoretical basis for the development of GJ as a potentially useful resource for hepatoprotective diet.

The demand for crayfish surimi products has grown recently due to its high protein content. This study examined the effects of varying κ-carrageenan (CAR) and crayfish surimi (CSM) concentrations on the gelling properties of CAR-CSM composite gel and its intrinsic formation process. Our findings demonstrated that with the increasing concentration of carrageenan, the quality of CAR-CSM exhibited rising trend followed by subsequently fall. Based on the textural qualities, the highest quality CAR-CSM was achieved at 0.3% carrageenan addition. With the exception of chewiness, and the cooking loss of the gel system was 1.62%, whiteness was 82.35%, and the percentage of ß-sheets increased to 57.18%. Further increase in CAR (0.4-0.5%) addition resulted in internal build-up of LCAR-CSM, conversion of intermolecular forces into disulfide bonds and gel breakage. This study exudes timely recommendations for extending the CAR application for the continuous development of crayfish surimi and its derivatives and its overall economic worth.

In this study, we investigated the ameliorative gut modulatory effect of carboxymethylated Lycium barbarum seed dreg insoluble dietary fiber (LBSDIDF) on hyperlipidemic mice. After seven weeks of insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) intervention, the results demonstrated that IDFs effectively inhibited body weight gain, with slimming and hypolipidemic effects, and improved liver histopathology by decreasing ALT, AST, TNF-α and IL-6, and increasing short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels in hyperlipidemic mice. With the increasing diversity and abundance of intestinal bacteria and decreasing ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes, intestinal flora facilitated cholesterol lowering effects in hyperlipidemic mice. Our research offers a novel concept for the use of LBSDIDF as a prebiotic to improve intestinal dysbiosis or as a preventive measure against obesity and dyslipidemia.

Recent studies have emphasized the beneficial effects of 50 µM selenium (Se) on the growth and development of the silkworm, Bombyx mori; however, less is known about its underlying mechanism. To unravel the effect of 50 µM Se on the silkworms with neutral endopeptidase 24.11-like gene (NEP-L) knockdown, we injected small interfering RNA (siRNA) into the body cavity of silkworms. Phenotypic characteristics, mRNA expression of the Nep-L gene, and enriched Se content were evaluated in silkworms from each treatment group. After injecting Nep-L siRNA, the body weight, cocoon quality (cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, and cocoon shell ratio), and egg production of silkworms were significantly reduced, without any significant effect on egg laying number. However, Se treatment could significantly alleviate the inhibition of body weight, and cocoon quality, without significant effects on egg laying number and production. In addition, the gene knockdown increased Se content in the B. mori. On the molecular level, the targeted Nep-L gene was inhibited significantly by siRNA interference, essentially with the strongest effect at 24 h after RNAi, followed by steady recovery. Among the three fragments, the siRNA of Nep-L-3 was the most effective in interfering with target gene expression. Nep-L gene showed the highest expression in Malpighian tubules (MTs). Both at the phenotypic and genotypic levels, our results show that Nep-L knockdown can exert a significant inhibitory effect on silkworms, and 50 µM Se can reverse the negative effect, which provides a practical prospect for strengthening the silkworm food industry.

The aim of this study was to prepare active intelligent gluten protein films using wheat gluten protein (WG) and apple pectin (AP) as film-forming matrices, and blueberry anthocyanin extract (BAE) as a natural indicator. SEM and FT-IR analyses demonstrated the successful immobilization of BAE in the film matrix by hydrogen bonding interactions and its compatibility with WG and AP. The resultant WG-AP/BAE indicator films demonstrated notable antioxidant activity, color stability, barrier qualities, pH and ammonia response sensitivity, and mechanical properties. Among them, WG-AP/BAE5 exhibited the best mechanical properties (TS: 0.83 MPa and EB: 242.23%) as well as the lowest WVP (3.92 × 10-8 g.m/m2.Pa.s), and displayed high sensitivity to volatile ammonia. In addition, WG-AP/BAE5 showed a color shift from purplish red to green to yellowish green, demonstrating the monitoring of shrimp freshness in real time. Consequently, this study offers a firm scientific foundation for the development of active intelligent gluten protein films and their use in food freshness assessments.

The fabrication of scaffolds capable of the sustained release of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to promote angiogenesis for a long time remains a challenge in tissue engineering. Here, we report a facile approach for effectively fabricating a bioactive scaffold that gradually releases VEGF to promote angiogenesis. The scaffold was fabricated by coating polydopamine (PDA) on a konjac glucomannan (KGM) scaffold, followed by the surface immobilization of VEGF with PDA. The resulting VEGF-PDA/KGM scaffold, with a porous and interconnected microstructure (392 µm pore size with 84.80 porosity), combined the features of long-term biodegradability (10 weeks with 51 % degradation rate), excellent biocompatibility, and sustained VEGF release for up to 21 days. The bioactive VEGF-PDA/KGM scaffold exhibited multiple angiogenic activities over time, as confirmed by in vivo and in vitro experiments. For example, the scaffold significantly promoted the attachment and proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells and the formation of vascular tubes in vitro. Moreover, the in vivo results demonstrated the formation and maturation of blood vessels after subcutaneous implantation in rats for four weeks. This promising strategy is a feasible approach for producing bioactive materials that can induce angiogenesis in vivo. These findings provide a new avenue for designing and fabricating biocompatible and long-term biodegradable scaffolds for sustained VEGF release to facilitate angiogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Members of the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain, leucine rich repeat and pyrin domain containing (NLRP) family regulate various physiological and pathological processes. However, none have been shown to regulate actin cap formation or spindle translocation during the asymmetric division of oocyte meiosis I. NLRP4E has been reported as a candidate protein in female fertility, but its function is unknown. METHODS: Immunofluorescence, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and western blotting were employed to examine the localization and expression levels of NLRP4E and related proteins in mouse oocytes. small interfering RNA (siRNA) and antibody transfection were used to knock down NLRP4E and other proteins. Immunoprecipitation (IP)-mass spectrometry was used to identify the potential proteins interacting with NLRP4E. Coimmunoprecipitation (Co-IP) was used to verify the protein interactions. Wild type (WT) or mutant NLRP4E messenger RNA (mRNA) was injected into oocytes for rescue experiments. In vitro phosphorylation was employed to examine the activation of steroid receptor coactivator (SRC) by NLRP4E. RESULTS: NLRP4E was more predominant within oocytes compared with other NLRP4 members. NLRP4E knockdown significantly inhibited actin cap formation and spindle translocation toward the cap region, resulting in the failure of polar body extrusion at the end of meiosis I. Mechanistically, GRIN1, and GANO1 activated NLRP4E by phosphorylation at Ser429 and Thr430; p-NLRP4E is translocated and is accumulated in the actin cap region during spindle translocation. Next, we found that p-NLRP4E directly phosphorylated SRC at Tyr418, while p-SRC negatively regulated p-CDC42-S71, an inactive form of CDC42 that promotes actin cap formation and spindle translocation in the GTP-bound form. CONCLUSIONS: NLRP4E activated by GRIN1 and GANO1 regulates actin cap formation and spindle translocation toward the cap region through upregulation of p-SRC-Tyr418 and downregulation of p-CDC42-S71 during meiosis I.

This study explored the use of ionic liquid-ultrasound (ILU)-assisted extraction to enhance the extraction rate of Platycodon grandiflorum saponins (PGSs), and the content, extraction mechanism, antioxidant activity, whitening, and antiaging activity of PGSs prepared using ILU, ultrasound-water, thermal reflux-ethanol, and cellulase hydrolysis were compared. The ILU method particularly disrupted the cell wall, improved PGS extraction efficiency, and yielded a high total saponin content of 1.45 ± 0.02 mg/g. Five monomeric saponins were identified, with platycodin D being the most abundant at 1.357 mg/g. PGSs displayed excellent in vitro antioxidant activity and exhibited inhibitory effects on tyrosinase, elastase, and hyaluronidase. The results suggest that PGSs may have broad antioxidant, skin-whitening, and antiaging potential to a large extent. Overall, this study provided valuable insights into the extraction, identification, and bioactivities of PGSs, which could serve as a reference for future development and application of these compounds in the functional foods industry.

BACKGROUND: Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) is a condition that causes simultaneous headache and facial pain. The treatment for GPN is similar to the treatment for trigeminal neuralgia. Craniotomy microvascular decompression (MVD) or radiofrequency (RF) therapy is needed if conservative treatment with oral drugs fails. Therefore, the choice of radiofrequency therapy target is essential when treating GPN. However, finding the glossopharyngeal nerve simply by styloid process positioning is challenging. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, clinical research study. SETTING: Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medical Center, Jiaxing, China. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effects of computed tomography (CT)-guided RF treatments on GPN when the triple localization of cervical CT, the transverse process of the atlas, and the styloid process is used to those achieved when the treatments are guided by the styloid process alone. METHODS: From August 2016 to December 2019, 19 cases of GPN neuralgia were treated by radiofrequency under the guidance of CT guided by the styloid process only. (These patients comprised the single localization (SL) of styloid process group, in whom the target of the RF treatments was the posterior medial side of half of the styloid process). From January 2020 to December 2022, 16 cases of GPN were treated by RF under the guidance of CT with cervical CTA (CT angiography), the transverse process of the atlas, and the styloid process. (These patients were placed in the TL group, in whom the target of RF therapy was the gap between the internal carotid artery and the internal jugular vein behind the horizontal styloid process at the lower edge of the transverse process of the atlas). Two percent lidocaine was injected subcutaneously at the needle insertion site, and a stylet with a 21-gauge blunt RF needle (model: 240100, manufacturer: Englander Medical Technology Co., Ltd.) was slowly advanced toward the target. After that, an RF probe was introduced, then low (2 Hz)- and high (50 Hz)-frequency currents of the RF instrument (model: PMG-230, Canada Baylis company) were applied to stimulate. A successful test was defined as a 0.5-1.0 mA current stimulation that could induce the original pain area in the pharynx, the inner ear, or both, without any abnormal irritation of the vagus or accessory nerves. If the first test was unsuccessful, then in the SL group, the needle tip's position was adjusted to the distal end of the styloid process, and in the triple localization (TL) group, the needle tip depth's was fine-tuned. A continuous RF treatment was given after a successful test. The RF temperature was 95ºC for 180 seconds. The time that the first puncture reached the target, the puncture paths, the success rate of the first test, the time that the glossopharyngeal nerve was found, the frequency of adjustments to the position of the RF needle, the incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications, and the therapeutic effects were recorded. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in demographic data such as age, medical history, lateral classification, and pain score between the groups, but the TL group had a higher proportion of women than did the SL group. All patients' puncture targets were identified according to the designed puncture path before the operation. There was no difference between the 2 groups in the time of the first puncture to the target (5.05 ± 1.22 vs. 5.82 ± 1.51, P = 0.18), and the designed puncture depth (3.65 ± 0.39 vs. 4.04 ± 0.44). The difference in puncture angles (13.48 ± 3.56 vs. 17.84 ± 3.98, P < 0.01) was statistically significant, and in 8 cases in the SL group, the glossopharyngeal nerve could not be found after 60 minutes of testing, so the RF treatment was terminated. Meanwhile, this problem occurred in only 2 cases in the TL group. There were 3 cervical hematoma cases and 2 cases of transient hoarseness and cough in the SL group, whereas the TL group had, respectively, 0 and one cases of those issues. There was no death in either group. LIMITATIONS: More clinical data should be collected in future studies. CONCLUSION: When using RF as a treatment for GPN, the glossopharyngeal nerve is easier to find by using the triple positioning of the cervical CTA, the transverse process of the atlas and the styloid process as the target to determine the anterior medial edge of the internal carotid artery behind the styloid process at the level of the lower edge of the atlas transverse process. The glossopharyngeal nerve is more difficult to locate when only the posterior medial edge of the styloid process is targeted. The single-time effective rate of 180 seconds of RF ablation at 90ºC for GPN can reach 87.5% (14/16), suggesting the treatment's potential for clinical application.

The utilization of agroindustrial wastes to enrich food protein resources and the exploration of their broader applications are crucial for addressing the food crisis and achieving sustainable development goals. In this study, reeling wastewater-derived sericin was hydrolyzed using papain and trypsin to prepare sericin peptide (SRP) and was used as an antihardening ingredient of high-protein nutrition bars (HPNBs). The mechanism of the antihardening effect of SRP was elucidated by investigating the content of advanced glycation end products and protein oxidation products (carbonyl and free sulfhydryl), and the molecular weight change of HPNBs during storage before and after the addition of SRP. Our results confirmed the fortification of HPNBs with SRP, which is beneficial for the promotion and expansion of sericin applications in the food industry, with positive implications for the rational utilization of protein resources and the enrichment of food protein sources.

RESUMO

Smart contact lenses (SCLs) have been considered as novel wearable devices for out-of-hospital and self-monitoring applications. They are capable of non-invasively and continuously monitoring physiological signals in the eyes, including vital biophysical (e.g., intraocular of pressure, temperature, and electrophysiological signal) and biochemical signals (e.g., pH, glucose, protein, nitrite, lactic acid, and ions). Recent progress mainly focuses on the rational design of wearable SCLs for physiological signal monitoring, while also facilitating the treatment of various ocular diseases. It covers contact lens materials, fabrication technologies, and integration methods. We also highlight and discuss a critical comparison of SCLs with electrical, microfluidic, and optical signal outputs in health monitoring. Their advantages and disadvantages could help researchers to make decisions when developing SCLs with desired properties for physiological signal monitoring. These unique capabilities make SCLs promising diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Despite the extensive research in SCLs, new technologies are still in their early stages of development and there are a few challenges to be addressed before these SCLs technologies can be successfully commercialized particularly in the form of rigorous clinical trials.
