RESUMO

In spite of the high-density and strongly correlated nature of the atomic nucleus, experimental and theoretical evidence suggests that around particular 'magic' numbers of nucleons, nuclear properties are governed by a single unpaired nucleon1,2. A microscopic understanding of the extent of this behaviour and its evolution in neutron-rich nuclei remains an open question in nuclear physics3-5. The indium isotopes are considered a textbook example of this phenomenon6, in which the constancy of their electromagnetic properties indicated that a single unpaired proton hole can provide the identity of a complex many-nucleon system6,7. Here we present precision laser spectroscopy measurements performed to investigate the validity of this simple single-particle picture. Observation of an abrupt change in the dipole moment at N = 82 indicates that, whereas the single-particle picture indeed dominates at neutron magic number N = 82 (refs. 2,8), it does not for previously studied isotopes. To investigate the microscopic origin of these observations, our work provides a combined effort with developments in two complementary nuclear many-body methods: ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group and density functional theory (DFT). We find that the inclusion of time-symmetry-breaking mean fields is essential for a correct description of nuclear magnetic properties, which were previously poorly constrained. These experimental and theoretical findings are key to understanding how seemingly simple single-particle phenomena naturally emerge from complex interactions among protons and neutrons.

Isotope shifts of ^{223-226,228}Ra^{19}F were measured for different vibrational levels in the electronic transition A^{2}Π_{1/2}←X^{2}Σ^{+}. The observed isotope shifts demonstrate the particularly high sensitivity of radium monofluoride to nuclear size effects, offering a stringent test of models describing the electronic density within the radium nucleus. Ab initio quantum chemical calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental observations. These results highlight some of the unique opportunities that short-lived molecules could offer in nuclear structure and in fundamental symmetry studies.

Revealing the predominant driving force behind symmetry breaking in correlated materials is sometimes a formidable task due to the intertwined nature of different degrees of freedom. This is the case for La_{2-x}Sr_{x}NiO_{4+δ}, in which coupled incommensurate charge and spin stripes form at low temperatures. Here, we use resonant x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to study the temporal stability and domain memory of the charge and spin stripes in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}NiO_{4+δ}. Although spin stripes are more spatially correlated, charge stripes maintain a better temporal stability against temperature change. More intriguingly, charge order shows robust domain memory with thermal cycling up to 250 K, far above the ordering temperature. These results demonstrate the pinning of charge stripes to the lattice and that charge condensation is the predominant factor in the formation of stripe orders in nickelates.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative mortality after colorectal cancer surgery varies across hospitals and countries. The aim of this study was to test the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) models as predictors of 30-day mortality in an Australian cohort. METHODS: Data from patients who underwent surgery in six hospitals between 1996 and 2015 (CRC data set) were reviewed to test ACPGBI models, and patients from 79 hospitals in the Bi-National Colorectal Cancer Audit between 2007 and 2016 (BCCA data set) were analysed to validate model performance. Recalibrated models based on ACPGBI risk models were developed, tested and validated on a data set of Australasian patients. RESULTS: Of 18 752 patients observed during the study, 6727 (CRC data set) and 3814 (BCCA data set) were analysed. The 30-day mortality rate was 1·1 and 3·5 per cent in the CRC and BCCA data sets respectively. Both the original and revised ACPGBI models overestimated 30-day mortality for the CRC data set (observed to expected (O/E) ratio 0·17 and 0·21 respectively). Their ability to correctly predict mortality risk was poor (P < 0·001, Hosmer-Lemeshow test); however, the area under the curve for both models was 0·88 (95 per cent c.i. 0·85 to 0·92) showing good discriminatory power to classify 30-day mortality. The recalibrated original model performed well for calibration and discrimination, whereas the recalibrated revised model performed well for discrimination but not for calibration. Risk prediction was good for both recalibrated models. On external validation using the BCCA data set, the recalibrated models underestimated mortality risk (O/E ratio 3·06 and 2·98 respectively), whereas both original and revised ACPGBI models overestimated the risk (O/E ratio 0·48 and 0·69). All models showed similar good discrimination. CONCLUSION: The original and revised ACPGBI models overpredicted risk of 30-day mortality. The new Australasian calibrated ACPGBI model needs to be tested further in clinical practice.


ANTECEDENTES: La mortalidad postoperatoria tras la cirugía del cancer colorrectal (colorectal cáncer, CRC) varía entre hospitales y países. El objetivo de este estudio era evaluar los modelos de la Asociación de Coloproctólogos de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda (Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland, ACPGBI) como predictores de mortalidad a los 30 días en una cohorte de pacientes de Australia. MÉTODOS: Se revisaron los datos de pacientes sometidos a cirugía en seis hospitales entre 1996-2015 (datos CRC) para evaluar los modelos ACPGBI, mientras que los datos recogidos en 79 hospitales en la auditoría bi-nacional de cáncer colorrectal (Bi-National Colorectal Cancer Audit) entre 2007-2016 (datos BCCA) se analizaron para validar el comportamiento del modelo. Se desarrollaron modelos recalibrados basados en los modelos de riesgo ACPGBI que fueron aplicados y validados en un conjunto de datos multi-institucionales de pacientes australianos. La mortalidad observada y estimada (tasa 0/E) a 30 días se calculó en los modelos ACPGBI original y revisados usando el test de Hosmer-Lemeshow y los análisis de la curva de las características operador-receptor (ROC) para evaluar la calibración y discriminación de los modelos. RESULTADOS: De un total de 18,752 pacientes observados durante el periodo de estudio, se analizaron 6.727 (datos CRC) y 3.814 (datos BCCA). La mortalidad en los pacientes del grupo de datos CRC fue del 1,1% y en los del grupo de datos BCCA del 3,5%. Para el grupo de datos CRC, los modelos ACPGBI sobreestimaron significativamente la mortalidad a los 30 días, tanto en el modelo original como en el modelo revisado (O/E 0,17 y 0,21). La capacidad de los modelos para predecir correctamente el riesgo de mortalidad también fue limitada (test de Hosmer-Lemeshow 23,1 y 22.9); sin embargo, el área bajo la curva ROC de ambos modelos fue de 0,88 (i.c. del 95% 0,85-0,92) con una buena capacidad discriminatoria para clasificar a los pacientes que fallecían durante los primeros 30 días tras la cirugía. El modelo original ACPGBI recalibrado presentó un buen comportamiento para la predicción de riesgo (tasa O/E 1,06), pero no fue así en el caso del modelo revisado ACPGBI recalibrado (tasa O/E 0,99). En la validación externa con los datos BCCA, los modelos recalibrados subestimaron el riesgo de mortalidad a los 30 días (tasa O/E 3,06 y 2,98), mientras que los modelos ACPGBI original y revisado sobreestimaron el riesgo (tasa O/E 0,48 y 0,69, respectivamente). Todos los modelos mostraron una buena discriminación en las curvas ROC. CONCLUSIÓN: Los modelos ACPGBI original y revisado sobreestimaron el riesgo de mortalidad a los 30 días. Se desarrolló un nuevo modelo, denominado modelo ACPGBI calibrado australiano o modelo ACACPGBI, cuya utilidad en la práctica clínica debe ser evaluada.

Molecular spectroscopy offers opportunities for the exploration of the fundamental laws of nature and the search for new particle physics beyond the standard model1-4. Radioactive molecules-in which one or more of the atoms possesses a radioactive nucleus-can contain heavy and deformed nuclei, offering high sensitivity for investigating parity- and time-reversal-violation effects5,6. Radium monofluoride, RaF, is of particular interest because it is predicted to have an electronic structure appropriate for laser cooling6, thus paving the way for its use in high-precision spectroscopic studies. Furthermore, the effects of symmetry-violating nuclear moments are strongly enhanced5,7-9 in molecules containing octupole-deformed radium isotopes10,11. However, the study of RaF has been impeded by the lack of stable isotopes of radium. Here we present an experimental approach to studying short-lived radioactive molecules, which allows us to measure molecules with lifetimes of just tens of milliseconds. Energetically low-lying electronic states were measured for different isotopically pure RaF molecules using collinear resonance ionisation at the ISOLDE ion-beam facility at CERN. Our results provide evidence of the existence of a suitable laser-cooling scheme for these molecules and represent a key step towards high-precision studies in these systems. Our findings will enable further studies of short-lived radioactive molecules for fundamental physics research.

Collective dynamics often play an important role in determining the stability of ground states for both naturally occurring materials and metamaterials. We studied the temperature dependent dynamics of antiferromagnetically ordered superdomains in a square artificial spin lattice using soft x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. We observed an exponential slowing down of superdomain wall motion below the antiferromagnetic onset temperature, similar to the behavior of typical bulk antiferromagnets. Using a continuous time random walk model we show that these superdomain walls undergo low-temperature ballistic and high-temperature diffusive motions.

Although CDW correlations are a ubiquitous feature of the superconducting cuprates, their disparate properties suggest a crucial role for pinning the CDW to the lattice. Here, we report coherent resonant X-ray speckle correlation analysis, which directly determines the reproducibility of CDW domain patterns in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 (LBCO 1/8) with thermal cycling. While CDW order is only observed below 54 K, where a structural phase transition creates inequivalent Cu-O bonds, we discover remarkably reproducible CDW domain memory upon repeated cycling to far higher temperatures. That memory is only lost on cycling to 240(3) K, which recovers the four-fold symmetry of the CuO2 planes. We infer that the structural features that develop below 240 K determine the CDW pinning landscape below 54 K. This opens a view into the complex coupling between charge and lattice degrees of freedom in superconducting cuprates.

Background: Lymph node yield (LNY) of 12 or more in resection of colorectal cancer is recommended in current international guidelines. Although a low LNY (less than 12) is associated with poorer outcome in some studies, its prognostic value is unclear in patients with early-stage colorectal or rectal cancer with a complete pathological response following neoadjuvant therapy. Lymph node ratio (LNR), which reflects the proportion of positive to total nodes obtained, may be more accurate in predicting outcome in stage III colorectal cancer. This study aimed to identify factors correlating with LNY and evaluate the prognostic role of LNY and LNR in colorectal cancer. Methods: An observational study was performed on patients with colorectal cancer treated at three hospitals in Melbourne, Australia, from January 2010 to March 2016. Association of LNY and LNR with clinical variables was analysed using linear regression. Disease-free (DFS) and overall (OS) survival were investigated with Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. Results: Some 1585 resections were analysed. Median follow-up was 27·1 (range 0·1-71) months. Median LNY was 16 (range 0-86), and was lower for rectal cancers, decreased with increasing age, and increased with increasing stage. High LNY (12 or more) was associated with better DFS in colorectal cancer. Subgroup analysis indicated that low LNY was associated with poorer DFS and OS in stage III colonic cancer, but had no effect on DFS and OS in rectal cancer (stages I-III). Higher LNR was predictive of poorer DFS and OS. Conclusion: Low LNY (less than 12) was predictive of poor DFS in stage III colonic cancer, but was not a factor for stage I or II colonic disease or any rectal cancer. LNR was a predictive factor in DFS and OS in stage III colonic cancer, but influenced DFS only in rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Abdominoperineal resection (APR) is associated with a poorer oncological outcome than anterior resection. This may be due to higher rates of intra-operative perforation and circumferential resection margin involvement. The aim of this study was to audit our short and long-term results of abdominoperineal resection performed using conventional techniques and to compare this with other published series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients who had standard APR between January 2000 and December 2016 in a single institution, Cabrini Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. A total of 163 cases performed by nine different colorectal surgeons for primary rectal adenocarcinoma were identified, with their clinicopathological data analysed. RESULTS: Using standard APR, only six patients (3.7%) were found to have a positive circumferential resection margin (CRM). There were two cases of intra-operative perforation (1.2%). Local recurrence rate was 5.6% of patients, with distant recurrence found in 24.9%. Disease-free survival at five years was 73.1%. Five-year overall survival was 66.7%, 67.9% of all deaths were cancer-related. CONCLUSION: Short and long-term outcomes after standard APR in this study were comparable to previous published studies. The CRM rate of 3.7% compares favourably to published positive CRM rates for standard APR which ranged from 6 to 18%. Standard APR remains a viable technique for the treatment of rectal cancer. Patient selection and adequate training remain important factors.

Manipulating magnetic domains is essential for many technological applications. Recent breakthroughs in Antiferromagnetic Spintronics brought up novel concepts for electronic device development. Imaging antiferromagnetic domains is of key importance to this field. Unfortunately, some of the basic domain types, such as antiphase domains, cannot be imaged by conventional techniques. Herein, we present a new domain projection imaging technique based on the localization of domain boundaries by resonant magnetic diffraction of coherent X rays. Contrast arises from reduction of the scattered intensity at the domain boundaries due to destructive interference effects. We demonstrate this approach by imaging antiphase domains in a collinear antiferromagnet Fe2Mo3O8, and observe evidence of domain wall interaction with a structural defect. This technique does not involve any numerical algorithms. It is fast, sensitive, produces large-scale images in a single-exposure measurement, and is applicable to a variety of magnetic domain types.

AIM: Obesity is common in Western countries and its prevalence is increasing. Colorectal cancer is common, and surgery for colorectal cancer is technically more challenging in obese patients. Laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer has been shown to be oncologically equivalent, with improved short- term outcomes. Laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer has proven technically challenging, and recent results have raised concerns about oncological equivalence. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of body mass index (BMI) on the clinical and oncological outcomes of surgery for colorectal cancer, including the rate at which laparoscopic surgery is attempted and the rate at which laparoscopic surgery is converted to open surgery. METHOD: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from two tertiary institutions was performed. Data were obtained from the Cabrini Monash University colorectal neoplasia database for patients having surgical resection for colon and rectal cancers between 1 January 2010 and 30 June 2015. Surgical and medical complications, tumour recurrence and overall survival and laparoscopic surgery and conversion rates were investigated. RESULTS: This large case series of 1464 patients undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer has demonstrated that an elevated BMI is associated with a lower likelihood of attempting laparoscopic surgery and a higher conversion rate to open surgery when laparoscopy is attempted. Conversion was 1.9 times more likely in obese patients with colon cancer and 4.1 times more likely in obese patients with rectal cancer. The critical BMI for colon cancer patients was > 35 kg/m2 , and for rectal cancer patients > 30 kg/m2 . Obesity is also associated with increased rates of surgical complications, including anastomotic leakage and wound complications. Pathological parameters, tumour recurrence and survival were not affected by elevated BMI. CONCLUSION: In the surgical management of colorectal cancer, obesity is associated with a lower likelihood of laparoscopic surgery being attempted, a higher likelihood of conversion to open surgery when laparoscopic surgery is attempted, and a higher rate of surgical complications.

The occurrence of charge-density-wave (CDW) order in underdoped cuprates is now well established, although the precise nature of the CDW and its relationship with superconductivity is not. Theoretical proposals include contrasting ideas such as that pairing may be driven by CDW fluctuations or that static CDWs may intertwine with a spatially modulated superconducting wave function. We test the dynamics of CDW order in La_{1.825}Ba_{0.125}CuO_{4} by using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy at the CDW wave vector, detected resonantly at the Cu L_{3} edge. We find that the CDW domains are strikingly static, with no evidence of significant fluctuations up to 2 ¾ h. We discuss the implications of these results for some of the competing theories.

New technical developments have led to a 2 orders of magnitude improvement of the resolution of the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at ISOLDE, CERN, without sacrificing the high efficiency of the CRIS technique. Experimental linewidths of 20(1) MHz were obtained on radioactive beams of francium, allowing us for the first time to determine the electric quadrupole moment of the short lived [t_{1/2}=22.0(5) ms] ^{219}Fr Q_{s}=-1.21(2) eb, which would not have been possible without the advantages offered by the new method. This method relies on a continuous-wave laser and an external Pockels cell to produce narrow-band light pulses, required to reach the high resolution in two-step resonance ionization. Exotic nuclei produced at rates of a few hundred ions/s can now be studied with high resolution, allowing detailed studies of the anchor points for nuclear theories.

There is interest in developing potent, selective, and cell-permeable inhibitors of human ferrous iron and 2-oxoglutarate (2OG) oxygenases for use in functional and target validation studies. The 3-component Betti reaction enables efficient one-step C-7 functionalisation of modified 8-hydroxyquinolines (8HQs) to produce cell-active inhibitors of KDM4 histone demethylases and other 2OG oxygenases; the work exemplifies how a template-based metallo-enzyme inhibitor approach can be used to give biologically active compounds.

RESUMO

Clinical quality registries are an overlooked and under-funded arm of clinical research in Australia. Registries are databases for patients with a particular disease, or who undergo a procedure, or use a health resource. Registries, where properly funded and universally adopted, have provided substantial benefits to the quality of healthcare and, in some cases, have had demonstrable effect in reducing costs. There is a lack of a coordinated programme for both funding and development of registries in Australia. A coordinated effort is required to address key gaps in registry coverage and ensure registries comply with appropriate technical and operating principles, and target areas where registries can add value to the health system. This will ensure that Australia is competitive with its international peers in this dynamic environment.

Static strain in complex oxide heterostructures has been extensively used to engineer electronic and magnetic properties at equilibrium. In the same spirit, deformations of the crystal lattice with light may be used to achieve functional control across heterointerfaces dynamically. Here, by exciting large-amplitude infrared-active vibrations in a LaAlO3 substrate we induce magnetic order melting in a NdNiO3 film across a heterointerface. Femtosecond resonant soft X-ray diffraction is used to determine the spatiotemporal evolution of the magnetic disordering. We observe a magnetic melt front that propagates from the substrate interface into the film, at a speed that suggests electronically driven motion. Light control and ultrafast phase front propagation at heterointerfaces may lead to new opportunities in optomagnetism, for example by driving domain wall motion to transport information across suitably designed devices.

Measurements of the vertical bubbly flow were performed at a low magnetic field of 0.2T. The void fraction data were acquired. The susceptibility-induced changes in T2 relaxation time were analyzed using the previously introduced approaches by Sukstanskii et al. and Ziener et al., originally developed for the Magnetic Resonance analysis of randomly distributed and isolated spherical inclusions, and a simple model of a spherical particle, respectively. The CPMG signal decay due to the presence of spherical inclusions was approximated as linear vs. CPMG inter-echo times to extract the average inclusion's size information. Two equations were derived for a simplified analysis of gas-liquid systems with basic T2 measurements, and without prior knowledge on the gas-liquid susceptibility or a need for the magnetic gradient setup. They can provide estimates for the void fraction and the average inclusion size, provided the CPMG inter-echo time requirements are met. For the control samples, there was a good agreement with the theory. For the bubbly flows, a good agreement was observed between the Magnetic Resonance and optics-based estimates for the slowest airflow rate. The deviation, however, increased for higher airflow rates. The introduced approach lends itself to the characterization of multi-phase systems such as cavitating media and well-separated bubbly flows.

We report femtosecond resonant soft x-ray diffraction measurements of the dynamics of the charge order and of the crystal lattice in nonsuperconducting, stripe-ordered La1.875Ba0.125CuO4. Excitation of the in-plane Cu-O stretching phonon with a midinfrared pulse has been previously shown to induce a transient superconducting state in the closely related compound La1.675Eu0.2Sr0.125CuO4. In La1.875Ba0.125CuO4, we find that the charge stripe order melts promptly on a subpicosecond time scale. Surprisingly, the low temperature tetragonal (LTT) distortion is only weakly reduced, reacting on significantly longer time scales that do not correlate with light-induced superconductivity. This experiment suggests that charge modulations alone, and not the LTT distortion, prevent superconductivity in equilibrium.

RESUMO

This review provides a brief overview, albeit from a somewhat personal perspective, of the evolution and key features of various hard X-ray phase-contrast imaging (PCI) methods of current interest in connection with translation to a wide range of imaging applications. Although such methods have already found wide-ranging applications using synchrotron sources, application to dynamic studies in a laboratory/clinical context, for example for in vivo imaging, has been slow due to the current limitations in the brilliance of compact laboratory sources and the availability of suitable high-performance X-ray detectors. On the theoretical side, promising new PCI methods are evolving which can record both components of the phase gradient in a single exposure and which can accept a relatively large spectral bandpass. In order to help to identify the most promising paths forward, we make some suggestions as to how the various PCI methods might be compared for performance with a particular view to identifying those which are the most efficient, given the fact that source performance is currently a key limiting factor on the improved performance and applicability of PCI systems, especially in the context of dynamic sample studies. The rapid ongoing development of both suitable improved sources and detectors gives strong encouragement to the view that hard X-ray PCI methods are poised for improved performance and an even wider range of applications in the near future.
