RESUMO

With the onset of the 5G era, wearable flexible electronic devices have developed rapidly and gradually entered the daily life of people. However, the vast majority of research focuses on the integration of functions and performance improvement, while ignoring electromagnetic hazards caused by devices. Herein, the 3D double conductive networks are constructed through a repetitive vacuum-assisted dip-coating technique to decorate the 2D MXene and 1D silver nanowires on the melamine foam. Benefiting from the unique porous structure and multi-scale interconnected frame, the resultant composite foam exhibited high electrical conductivity, low density, superb electromagnetic interference shielding (48.32 dB), and Joule heating performance (up to 90.8 °C under 0.8 V). Furthermore, a single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with powerful energy harvesting capability is assembled by combining the composite foam with an ultra-thin Ecoflex film and a polyvinylidene fluoride film. Simultaneously, the foam-based TENG can also be considered a reliable wearable sensor for monitoring activity patterns in different parts of the human body. The versatility and scalable manufacturing of high-performance composite foams will provide new design ideas for the development of next-generation flexible wearable devices.

Thromboelastography (TEG) remains a convenient and effective viscoelastic blood coagulation testing device for guiding blood component transfusion and assessing the risk of thrombosis. Here, a TEG enabled by a non-contact triboelectric angle sensor (NTAS) with a small size (∼7 cm3) is developed for assessing the blood coagulation system. With the assistance of a superelastic torsion wire structure, the NTAS-TEG realizes the detection of blood viscoelasticity. Benefiting from a grating and convex design, the NTAS holds a collection of compelling features, including accurate detection of rotation angles from -2.5° to 2.5°, high linearity (R 2 = 0.999), and a resolution of 0.01°. Besides, the NTAS exhibits merits of low cost and simplified fabrication. Based on the NTAS-TEG, a viscoelastic blood coagulation detection and analysis system is successfully constructed, which can provide a graph and parameters associated with clot initiation, formation, and stability for clinicians by using 0.36 mL of whole blood. The system not only validates the feasibility of the triboelectric coagulation testing sensor, but also further expands the application of triboelectric sensors in healthcare.

In recent years, magnetic resonance imaging has been widely used in the medical field. During the scan, if the human body moves, then there will be motion artifacts on the scan image, which will interfere with the diagnosis and only be found after the end of the scan sequence, resulting in a waste of manpower and resources. However, there is a lack of technology that halts scanning once motion artifacts arise. Here, we designed a real-time monitoring sensor (RMS) to dynamically perceive the movement of the human body and to pause in time when the movement exceeds a certain amplitude. The sensor has an array structure that can accurately sense the position of the human body in real time. The selection of the RMS ensures that there is no additional interference with the scanning results. Based on this design, the RMS can achieve the monitoring function of motion artifact generation.

Amoxicillin and sulbactam are widely used in animal food compounding. Amoxicillin-sulbactam hybrid molecules are bicester compounds made by linking amoxicillin and sulbactam with methylene groups and have good application prospects. However, the residual elimination pattern of these hybrid molecules in animals needs to be explored. In the present study, the amoxicillin-sulbactam hybrid molecule (AS group) and a mixture of amoxicillin and sulbactam (mixture group) were administered to rats by gavage, and the levels of the major metabolites of amoxicillin, amoxicilloic acid, amoxicillin diketopiperazine, and sulbactam were determined by UPLC-MS/MS. The residue elimination patterns of the major metabolites in the liver, kidney, urine, and feces of rats in the AS group and the mixture group were compared. The results showed that the total amount of amoxicillin, amoxicilloic acid, amoxicillin diketopiperazine, and the highest concentration of sulbactam in the liver and kidney samples of the AS group and the mixture group appeared at 1 h after drug withdrawal. Between 1 h and 12 h post discontinuation, the total amount of amoxicillin, amoxicilloic acid, and amoxicillin diketopiperazine in the two tissues decreased rapidly, and the elimination half-life of the AS group was significantly higher than that in the mixture group (p < 0.05); the residual amount of sulbactam also decreased rapidly, and the elimination half-life was not significantly different (p > 0.05). In 72 h urine samples, the total excretion rates were 60.61 ± 2.13% and 62.62 ± 1.73% in the AS group and mixture group, respectively. The total excretion rates of fecal samples (at 72 h) for the AS group and mixture group were 9.54 ± 0.26% and 10.60 ± 0.24%, respectively. These results showed that the total quantity of amoxicillin, amoxicilloic acid, and amoxicillin diketopiperazine was eliminated more slowly in the liver and kidney of the AS group than those of the mixture group and that the excretion rate through urine and feces was essentially the same for both groups. The residual elimination pattern of the hybrid molecule in rats determined in this study provides a theoretical basis for the in-depth development and application of hybrid molecules, as well as guidelines for the development of similar drugs.

As tactile force sensing has become increasingly significant in the field of machine haptics, achieving multidimensional force sensing remains a challenge. We propose a 3D flexible force sensor that consists of an axisymmetric hemispherical protrusion and four equally sized quarter-circle electrodes. By simulating the device using a force and electrical field model, it has been found that the magnitude and direction of the force can be expressed through the voltage relationship of the four electrodes when the magnitude of the shear force remains constant and its direction varies within 0-360°. The experimental results show that a resolution of 15° can be achieved in the range 0-90°. Additionally, we installed the sensor on a robotic hand, enabling it to perceive the magnitude and direction of touch and grasp actions. Based on this, the designed 3D flexible tactile force sensor provides valuable insights for multidimensional force detection and applications.

Trafficking receptors control protein localization through the recognition of specific signal sequences that specify unique cellular locations. Differences in luminal pH are important for the vectorial trafficking of cargo receptors. The KDEL receptor is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the ER by retrieving luminally localized folding chaperones in a pH-dependent mechanism. Structural studies have revealed the end states of KDEL receptor activation and the mechanism of selective cargo binding. However, precisely how the KDEL receptor responds to changes in luminal pH remains unclear. To explain the mechanism of pH sensing, we combine analysis of X-ray crystal structures of the KDEL receptor at neutral and acidic pH with advanced computational methods and cell-based assays. We show a critical role for ordered water molecules that allows us to infer a direct connection between protonation in different cellular compartments and the consequent changes in the affinity of the receptor for cargo.

Conventional "all-in-one" methods for multi-component active packaging systems are not wholly adequate for fresh food. Given the need for multifunctional properties, introducing halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) could be a promising way to achieve controllable release of active ingredients while endowing with pH-sensitive performance. Here, we pioneered a GRAS composite with multifunctional properties, employing natural HNTs as a nanocarrier, citral (Cit) as an active antimicrobial agent, and myricetin (Myr) for monitoring freshness. The Cit-HNTs-Myr had excellent DPPH, ABTS and ·OH radical scavenging capacity, dual-model (contact and fumigant) antibacterial properties, and pH-sensitive performance. Subsequently, a smart tag prepared by dipping cellulose fibers into Cit-HNTs-Myr, which extended the shelf life of shrimp and blueberries, and provided freshness information for the shrimp. These results demonstrate the applicability of Cit-HNTs-Myr in the preservation of perishable goods and freshness monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Healthy aging is a process of not only achieving good health but also increasing the life satisfaction of older adults aged 60 years and over, in which health behaviors play an important role. There is a lack of research on the time-varying dependencies between health, life satisfaction, and health behaviors, impeding a deeper understanding of healthy aging. PURPOSE: To develop an integrated framework for modeling the interrelationships among the components of healthy aging between multiple time slices. METHODS: Based on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Living Survey (CLHLS) data in the three waves of 2011/2012, 2014, and 2017/2018, Bayesian network and dynamic Bayesian network are jointly employed to study the relationships among the components of healthy aging within one time slice, as well as to explore the time-varying dependencies among the components between time slices. RESULTS: The results of structure learning reveal the direction of effects between different dimensions of health, with mental health and social health affecting physical health and self-rated health affecting both physical and mental health. In addition, health behaviors are found to affect mental health and social health, while self-rated health can influence life satisfaction. The parameters learned from the data show the magnitude and direction of concurrent effects, one-period lagged effects and two-period lagged effects between the factors, which find that the time-varying dependencies vary but are generally positive, long-term, and accumulative over time. In addition, the results of autoregressive effects show the positive predictive effects of health and life satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: It confirms the influence pathway from health behaviors to multidimensional health to life satisfaction, and the time-varying dependencies among the components of healthy aging, which facilitates a deeper understanding of healthy aging. Combining the results of autoregressive effects and descriptive statistics, it further indicates that healthy aging is a comprehensive result arising from interactions of multiple factors. Policymakers should guide older adults aged 60 years and over to adopt healthier behaviors and ensure the long-term sustainability and continuity of policies.

Improving the solar-to-thermal energy conversion efficiency of photothermal nanomaterials at no expense of other physicochemical properties, e.g., the catalytic reactivity of metal nanoparticles, is highly desired for diverse applications but remains a big challenge. Herein, a synergistic strategy is developed for enhanced photothermal conversion by a greenhouse-like plasmonic superstructure of 4 nm cobalt nanoparticles while maintaining their intrinsic catalytic reactivity. The silica shell plays a key role in retaining the plasmonic superstructures for efficient use of the full solar spectrum, and reducing the heat loss of cobalt nanoparticles via the nano-greenhouse effect. The optimized plasmonic superstructure catalyst exhibits supra-photothermal CO2 methanation performance with a record-high rate of 2.3 mol gCo -1 h-1 , close to 100% CH4 selectivity, and desirable catalytic stability. This work reveals the great potential of nanoscale greenhouse effect in enhancing photothermal conversions through the combination with conventional promoting strategies, shedding light on the design of efficient photothermal nanomaterials for demanding applications.

Stretchable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are widely applied in wearable and implantable electronics, smart medical devices, and soft robots. However, it is still a challenge to produce stretchable TENGs with both exceptional elasticity and output performance, which limits their application scope. In this work, high-performance stretchable TENGs are developed through a thermo-compression (TC) fabrication process. In particular, a poly(vinylidene fluoride) film is compactly bound to the elastic thermoplastic polyurethane substrate, which inherits excellent stretchability with a strain of up to 815%. Furthermore, owing to the large surface area, tight contact, and effective vertical transport of tribo-induced charges between the coupled fibrous tribo-layer and soft substrate, the TC composite film-based TENGs exhibit a greater output (2-4 times) than unlaminated film-based TENGs. Additionally, the broad universality of this method is proven using various tribo- and substrate materials. The proposed technology provides a novel and effective approach to conjointly boost the output and stretchability of TENGs, showing encouraging application prospects in self-powered wearable and flexible electronics.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a chronic liver injury caused by excessive alcohol consumption, could be impacted by gut-liver axis dysfunction. The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the development and progression of ALD. Given the role of gut-liver axis dysfunction in ALD, strategies targeting gut microbiota modulation have gained interest for therapeutic interventions. Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum BL21 has shown promise in alleviating gut microbiota disturbances and metabolic regulation in high-fat diet-induced obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus models. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of BL21 on ALD mice and explore the potential mechanism by which the gut microbiota mediates the amelioration of ALD by BL21. METHODS: A total of 30 mice were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 10 mice/group): a healthy control (CTL) group, an ALD group, and a BL21 group. Each group was fed a Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet with (ALD and BL21) or without alcohol (CTL). The intervention period lasted 6 weeks, after which the effects of BL21 intervention (intragastric administration of 1 billion CFU of BL21 daily) on serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, hepatic oxidative stress, serum inflammatory cytokine levels, and gut microbiota composition in ALD mice were investigated. RESULTS: Dietary BL21 reduced the ethanol-induced abnormal elevation of serum AST and ALT levels in ALD mice (P < 0.001 for both). BL21 treatment significantly attenuated alcohol-induced hepatic oxidative stress by decreasing malondialdehyde concentration and increasing superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione concentrations in the livers of ALD mice. In addition, the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß), and IL-6 were significantly lower (P < 0.001 for both), while that of IL-10 was significantly higher (P < 0.05), in the BL21 group than in the ALD group. Intestinal microbiota analysis showed an increased relative abundance of Escherichia/Shigella, Enterococcus, and Alistipes in the ALD group compared with the CTL group. BL21 intervention increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia compared with the ALD group. CONCLUSION: Dietary BL21 ameliorates ALD via enhancement of the hepatic antioxidant capacity and modulation of the gut microbiota and may therefore be a promising strategy to prevent or treat ALD.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the repeatability and agreement of Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (AOCT-1000 M and RTVue XR) and partial coherence interferometry biometer (IOL Master 500) in measuring corneal thickness mapping and axial length respectively. METHODS: Corneal thickness was measured by AOCT-1000 M and RTVue XR. Axial lengths were measured by AOCT-1000 M and IOL Master 500. The repeatability and agreement of corneal thickness and axial length were calculated in two groups of devices. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to verify the repeatability of the device. The 95% confidence interval of the difference compared to the set cut-off value was used to verify the agreement between the two devices. RESULTS: A total of 60 subjects with 58 eyes were included. The central corneal thickness measured by AOCT-1000 M and RTVue XR were 504.46 ± 42.53 µm and 504.43 ± 42.89 µm respectively. The average difference between groups was 0.03 ± 4.58 µm, and the 95% confidence interval was (-1.17, 1.24), which was far less than the set threshold value of 15 µm (P < 0.001). Both RTVue XR and AOCT-1000 M had very good ICC values of central corneal thickness (0.998 and 0.994, respectively). The average axial lengths measured by AOCT-1000 M and IOL Master 500 were 24.28 ± 1.25 mm and 24.29 ± 1.26 mm respectively and the 95% confidence interval was (-0.02, 0.01), which was less than the set threshold value of 0.15 mm (P < 0.001). The ICC for both devices were 1.000. CONCLUSION: Good repeatability and agreement were seen in measurements of central corneal thickness and axial length by AOCT-1000 M.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the diagnostic efficacy of modified time of flight magnetic resonance venography (mTOF-MRV) for iliac vein compression syndrome diagnosis by optimizing the scanning parameters and improving image quality. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 69 patients who underwent routine time of flight magnetic resonance venography (TOF-MRV) and 85 patients who received mTOF-MRV. Assessment of image quality of the two methods was performed by two radiologists using a four-point method. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of TOF-MRV and mTOF-MRV in the diagnosis of significant iliac vein compression (stenosis >50%) were analyzed by calculating the iliac vein stenosis rates of the two methods and using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as the gold standard. RESULTS: Inter-observer assessment of objective data measurement revealed excellent agreement {ICC [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 0.972 (0.953 to 0.983) for TOF-MRV and 0.979 (0.965 to 0.988) for m-TOF MRV, 0.976 (0.960 to 0.986) for DSA}. The mean error of stenosis rate of mTOF-MRV was markedly smaller than that of TOF-MRV (p < 0.05). Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of TOF-MRV in the diagnosis of significant stenosis were 100%, 95%, 67% and 100%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of mTOF-MRV were 100%. The mean image score for the mTOF-MRV was 3.63 ± 0.59, which was significantly higher compared with that of TOF-MRV (2.19 ± 0.42). CONCLUSION: mTOF-MRV has better image quality and can accurately diagnose venous stenosis. Therefore, it can be used for the detection of iliac vein compression syndrome and further assessment after endovascular interventions.

RESUMO

Infusing human taste perception into smart sensing devices to mimic the processing ability of gustatory organs to perceive liquid substances remains challenging. Here we developed a self-powered droplet-tasting sensor system based on the dynamic morphological changes of droplets and liquid-solid contact electrification. The sensor system has achieved accuracies of liquid recognition higher than 90% in five different applications by combining triboelectric fingerprint signals and deep learning. Furthermore, an image sensor is integrated to extract the visual features of liquids, and the recognition capability of the liquid-sensing system is improved to up to 96.0%. The design of this dual-sensory fusion self-powered liquid-sensing system, along with the droplet-tasting sensor that can autonomously generate triboelectric signals, provides a promising technological approach for the development of effective and low-cost liquid sensing for liquid food safety identification and management.

Introduction: Anxiety disorders have emerged as a predominant health concern, yet existing pharmacological treatments for anxiety still present various challenges. Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat Carbonisata (CMRC) has been utilized in China for approximately 400 years as a therapeutic intervention for anxiety disorders. In this study, a novel type of carbon dots derived from the decoction of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat Carbonisata (CMRC-CDs) was identified and isolated, and their morphological structure and functional groups were characterized. Furthermore, the effects of CMRC-CDs on m-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP)-induced anxiety-like behaviour in mice were examined and quantified. In order to investigate the potential mechanisms of their anxiolytic effects, concentrations of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hormones, amino acid neurotransmitters, and monoamine neurotransmitters were measured. Methods: In this study, we synthesized CMRC-CDs and evaluated their potential anti-anxiety effects in a controlled experiment involving 48 male ICR mice. The mice were randomly divided into six groups, treated with CMRC-CDs at different doses for 14 days, and subjected to Open-Field (OF) and Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) tests. Post-behavioral evaluations, blood samples and brain tissues were collected for neurotransmitter and Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis hormone quantification via ELISA. Additionally, cytotoxicity of CMRC-CDs was assessed using a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay on RAW 264.7 cells. Results and Discussion: CMRC-CDs were spherical and homogeneously dispersed, with diameters ranging from 1.4 to 4.0 nm and an abundance of chemical groups on their surface. In the open-field (OF) test, mice pre-treated with CMRC-CDs demonstrated an increased proportion of time spent in the central area and a higher frequency of entries into the central area. In the elevated plus maze (EPM) test, mice pre-treated with CMRC-CDs exhibited a greater number of entries into the open arm and an extended duration spent in the open arm. CMRC-CDs were observed to decrease serum concentrations of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and corticosterone (CORT). Furthermore, CMRC-CDs were found to increase γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) levels, while concurrently reducing glutamic acid (Glu) concentrations in brain tissue. CMRC-CDs demonstrated anxiolytic effects, which may be attributed to their modulation of hormones and neurotransmitters. This finding suggests the potential therapeutic value of CMRC-CDs in the clinical treatment of anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Lens-iris diaphragm retropulsion syndrome (LIDRS) is common in vitrectomized or high myopic eyes during phacoemulsification. We evaluated the results of a modified technique for cataract treatment using phacoemulsification in vitrectomized eyes. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we enrolled thirty-four vitrectomized eyes treated with modified phacoemulsification (Modified Group) and nineteen vitrectomized eyes treated with routine phacoemulsification (Control Group). The modified technique comprised irrigation with a balanced salt solution underneath the pupil before phacoemulsification instrument entry, lens implantation and stromal hydration to stabilize the anterior chamber and equilibrate the pressure between the anterior chamber and posterior cavity. RESULTS: We compared the incidences of intra and postoperative complications and visual outcomes between modified and routine phacoemulsification. Pain, LIDRS and difficulty in stromal hydration were significantly more common in the Control Group than in the Modified Group (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the rates of posterior capsular rupture, iris trauma, lens dislocation, or posterior capsular opacification between the Modified and Control Groups (p > 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in visual acuity between the groups (p > 0.05). Complications such as loss of nuclear fragments into the vitreous cavity, cystoid macular edema, retina redetachment, suprachoroidal hemorrhage and vitreous hemorrhage did not occur either intra or postoperatively in any of our patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our modified technique prevents LIDRS and complications arising during cataract surgery in vitrectomized eyes. Aside from this, the results of modified and routine phacoemulsification are similar in vitrectomized eyes.

Driving metal-cluster-catalyzed high-temperature chemical reactions by sunlight holds promise for the development of negative-carbon-footprint industrial catalysis, which has yet often been hindered by the poor ability of metal clusters to harvest and utilize the full spectrum of solar energy. Here, we report the preparation of Mo2TiC2 MXene-supported Ru clusters (Ru/Mo2TiC2) with pronounced broadband sunlight absorption ability and high sintering resistance. Under illumination of focused sunlight, Ru/Mo2TiC2 can catalyze the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction to produce carbon monoxide from the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen with enhanced activity, selectivity, and stability compared to their nanoparticle counterparts. Notably, the CO production rate of MXene-supported Ru clusters reached 4.0 mol·gRu-1·h-1, which is among the best reported so far for photothermal RWGS catalysts. Detailed studies suggest that the production of methane is kinetically inhibited by the rapid desorption of CO from the surface of the Ru clusters.

Label-sensor is an essential component of the label printer which is becoming a most significant tool for the development of Internet of Things (IoT). However, some drawbacks of the traditional infrared label-sensor make the printer fail to realize the high-speed recognition of labels as well as stable printing. Herein, we propose a self-powered and highly sensitive tribo-label-sensor (TLS) for accurate label identification, positioning and counting by embedding triboelectric nanogenerator into the indispensable roller structure of a label printer. The sensing mechanism, device parameters and deep comparison with infrared sensor are systematically studied both in theory and experiment. As the results, TLS delivers 6 times higher signal magnitude than traditional one. Moreover, TLS is immune to label jitter and temperature variation during fast printing and can also be used for transparent label directly and shows long-term robustness. This work may provide an alternative toolkit with outstanding advantages to improve current label printer and further promote the development of IoT.

This paper presents a nonlinear magnetoelectric energy harvester which has the potential to harvest vibrational energy over a wide bandwidth in arbitrary motion directions. Three springs with equal intersection angles are adopted to absorb the multi-directional vibration energy. Magnetic interaction between the magnets and ME transducers allows the nonlinear motion with enhanced harvesting frequency range. Very good agreement is observed between the numerical and experimental open-circuit voltage output frequency response curves. The experimental results show that the harvester can harvest vibrational energy in an arbitrary direction, exhibiting a further bandwidth of 5.2 Hz. This study provides a new solution to effectively use the magnetoelectric energy harvester for multi-directional and bandwidth vibrational energy scavenging in the surrounding environment.

Treating hazardous waste Ni from the electroplating industry is mandated world-wide, is exceptionally expensive, and carries a very high CO2 footprint. Rather than regarding Ni as a disposable waste, the chemicals and petrochemicals industries could instead consider it a huge resource. In the work described herein, we present a strategy for upcycling waste Ni from electroplating wastewater into a photothermal catalyst for converting CO2 to CO. Specifically, magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated in amine functionalized porous SiO2, is demonstrated to efficiently scavenge Ni from electroplating wastewater for utilization in photothermal CO2 catalysis. The core-shell catalyst architecture produces CO at a rate of 1.9 mol·gNi-1·h-1 (44.1 mmol·gcat-1·h-1), a selectivity close to 100%, and notable long-term stability. This strategy of upcycling metal waste into functional, catalytic materials offers a multi-pronged approach for clean and renewable energy technologies.
