INTRODUCTION: Most COVID-19 survivors are troubled with chronic persistent symptoms, which have currently no definitive treatments. Bufei Huoxue (BFHX) capsule exerts clinical benefit, while the material basis and molecular mechanism remain unclear. AIM: The study aimed to elucidate the protective mechanisms of BFHX capsules against COVID-19 convalescence. UHPLC-HRMS and various databases were employed to explore potential compounds and targets. PPI, MCODE, transcription factor (TF), and miRNA analyses were conducted to receive hub targets and corresponding upstream regulators. METHOD: Molecular docking was applied to verify the binding activity of compound and target. Further, GO, KEGG, WIKI, and Reactome analyses were performed, and compound-targetsymptom and gene-disease networks were constructed. A total of 127 compounds and 313 targets were acquired. A sum of 10 hub targets were screened and showed good binding affinities with critical compounds. RESULT: MLLT1, CBFB, and EZH2 were identified as key TFs, and hsa-mir-146a-5p, hsa-mir- 26b-5p, and hsa-mir-24-3p were predicted to be important miRNAs. BFHX capsule may alleviate the symptoms by targeting TNF, IL-6, IFNG, and TGF-ß1. Besides, BFHX capsule may exert a therapeutic effect on respiratory disease (especially pulmonary fibrosis and lung infection) and multi-system damage during COVID-19 convalescence by regulating cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, as well as TGF-ß, TNF, and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways. CONCLUSION: In summary, BFHX capsule may exert a therapeutic effect on multi-system damages during COVID-19 convalescence through multiple compounds (such as albiflorin, isopsoralen, and neobavaisoflavone), multiple targets (such as TNF, IL-6, and EGF) and multiple pathways (TGF-ß, TNF, and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways).

The conventional approaches for recovering valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) suffer from heavy dependence on chemical reagents, high energy consumption, and low recovery efficiencies. In this study, we developed a shearing-enhanced mechanical exfoliation combined with mild-temperature pretreatment (SMEMP) method. The method achieves high-efficiency exfoliation of the cathode active materials that remain strongly adhered to polyvinylidene fluoride after it melts during mild pretreatment. The pretreatment temperature was decreased from 500-550 °C to 250 °C, the duration was decreased to 1/4-1/6 of the traditional pretreatment duration, and the exfoliation efficiency and product purity reached 96.88% and 99.93%, respectively. Despite the weakening thermal stress, the cathode materials could be exfoliated by strengthened shear forces. Compared with other traditional methods, the superiority of this method in temperature reduction and energy saving was established. The proposed SMEMP method is environmentally friendly and economical, and it offers a new route for the recovery of cathode active materials from spent LIBs.

Resistance to targeted drugs is now a challenging clinical problem in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). So far, there are no approved targeted therapeutic drugs for patients with disease progression after the third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor osimertinib resistance (OR). Super-enhancers (SEs) are large clusters of transcriptional enhancers that drive gene expression. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential pathogenic SEs and their driven genes in OR NSCLC. OR cell line was established by exposure of H1975 cells to incremental dosing of osimertinib. RNA-sequencing and H3K27ac ChIP-sequencing were used to identify the differential expressed genes (DEGs) and SEs in parental and resistant cells. Gene ontology analysis for the OR-specific SEs-associated genes showed that histone citrullination, protein citrullination, and peptidyl-arginine modification are the top three biological processes, and the DEGs involved in these biological processes, including peptidyl arginine deiminase 1 (PADI1), PADI2, and PADI3. Realtime-PCR and western blot detections confirmed these genes were highly expressed in OR cells. SE inhibitor decreases their expression, ensuring that SEs regulate their transcriptional expressions. The PADI inhibitor inhibited OR cells' proliferation, invasion, and colony formation. This study demonstrates that SE-driven PADI family genes are potential biomarkers and targets for OR NSCLC.

Objective: People suffering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are prone to develop pulmonary fibrosis (PF), but there is currently no definitive treatment for COVID-19/PF co-occurrence. Kaempferol with promising antiviral and anti-fibrotic effects is expected to become a potential treatment for COVID-19 and PF comorbidities. Therefore, this study explored the targets and molecular mechanisms of kaempferol against COVID-19/PF co-occurrence by bioinformatics and network pharmacology. Methods: Various open-source databases and Venn Diagram tool were applied to confirm the targets of kaempferol against COVID-19/PF co-occurrence. Protein-protein interaction (PPI), MCODE, key transcription factors, tissue-specific enrichment, molecular docking, Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were used to clarify the influential molecular mechanisms of kaempferol against COVID-19 and PF comorbidities. Results: 290 targets and 203 transcription factors of kaempferol against COVID-19/PF co-occurrence were captured. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase SRC (SRC), mitogen-activated protein kinase 3 (MAPK3), mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1), mitogen-activated protein kinase 8 (MAPK8), RAC-alpha serine/threonine-protein kinase (AKT1), transcription factor p65 (RELA) and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha isoform (PIK3CA) were identified as the most critical targets, and kaempferol showed effective binding activities with the above critical eight targets. Further, anti-COVID-19/PF co-occurrence effects of kaempferol were associated with the regulation of inflammation, oxidative stress, immunity, virus infection, cell growth process and metabolism. EGFR, interleukin 17 (IL-17), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), phosphoinositide 3-kinase/AKT serine/threonine kinase (PI3K/AKT) and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways were identified as the key anti-COVID-19/PF co-occurrence pathways. Conclusion: Kaempferol is a candidate treatment for COVID-19/PF co-occurrence. The underlying mechanisms may be related to the regulation of critical targets (EGFR, SRC, MAPK3, MAPK1, MAPK8, AKT1, RELA, PIK3CA and so on) and EGFR, IL-17, TNF, HIF-1, PI3K/AKT and Toll-like receptor signaling pathways. This study contributes to guiding development of new drugs for COVID-19 and PF comorbidities.

Asthma patients may increase their susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and the poor prognosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, anti-COVID-19/asthma comorbidity approaches are restricted on condition. Existing evidence indicates that luteolin has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immune regulation capabilities. We aimed to evaluate the possibility of luteolin evolving into an ideal drug and explore the underlying molecular mechanisms of luteolin against COVID-19/asthma comorbidity. We used system pharmacology and bioinformatics analysis to assess the physicochemical properties and biological activities of luteolin and further analyze the binding activities, targets, biological functions, and mechanisms of luteolin against COVID-19/asthma comorbidity. We found that luteolin may exert ideal physicochemical properties and bioactivity, and molecular docking analysis confirmed that luteolin performed effective binding activities in COVID-19/asthma comorbidity. Furthermore, a protein-protein interaction network of 538 common targets between drug and disease was constructed and 264 hub targets were obtained. Then, the top 6 hub targets of luteolin against COVID-19/asthma comorbidity were identified, namely, TP53, AKT1, ALB, IL-6, TNF, and VEGFA. Furthermore, the enrichment analysis suggested that luteolin may exert effects on virus defense, regulation of inflammation, cell growth and cell replication, and immune responses, reducing oxidative stress and regulating blood circulation through the Toll-like receptor; MAPK, TNF, AGE/RAGE, EGFR, ErbB, HIF-1, and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways; PD-L1 expression; and PD-1 checkpoint pathway in cancer. The possible "dangerous liaison" between COVID-19 and asthma is still a potential threat to world health. This research is the first to explore whether luteolin could evolve into a drug candidate for COVID-19/asthma comorbidity. This study indicated that luteolin with superior drug likeness and bioactivity has great potential to be used for treating COVID-19/asthma comorbidity, but the predicted results still need to be rigorously verified by experiments.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF), is a common distressing symptom of cancer. What's more, "Three anti-fatigue acupoints" is one of the most important components of "Jin's 3-needle therapy" created by Rui Jin, a professor of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, which can be used in the treatment of CRF. In this article, researchers will assess the safety and effect of acupuncture at 3 anti-fatigue acupoints on CRF in patients with cancer. METHODS: Literature search for relevant articles up to October 2018 will be carried out in 9 databases: Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, VIP, CBM, CNKI, Wanfang Database, CiNii, and OASIS. The included literatures will be randomized controlled trials of acupuncture at 3 anti-fatigue acupoints on CRF in patients with cancer. The certain common scales, which reflect the patients' fatigue degree or life quality will be the primary outcome measures. The secondary outcome measures will be defined with the blood index. After collecting the data, we will utilize Stata V.13.0. to perform data synthesis, subgroup analysis, partial sequence analysis, sensitivity analysis, and so on. A funnel plot will be used to assess reporting biases. And the funnel plot will be evaluated by the Egger and Begg tests. The quality of evidence will be judged by the grading of recommendations assessment, development, and evaluation. RESULTS: The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. CONCLUSION: Our study will provide the evidence for the clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture at 3 anti-fatigue acupoints in the treatment of CRF.

RATIONALE: Postoperative ileus with flatulence is a common symptom in patients who have undergone cesarean section, and it can lead to peritonitis and intestinal perforation. However, few previous reports described therapeutic effects of acupuncture in women with flatulence after cesarean delivery. We reported a case of 29-year-old woman with abdominal flatulence after cesarean section. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient developed right abdominal pain and distention with no discharging bowel movement or passage of gas through the anus after cesarean section. DIAGNOSIS: The computed tomography revealed bowel loops filled with gas. She was diagnosed with postoperative ileus. INTERVENTIONS: From the second day after cesarean section, acupuncture was administered at the bilateral Zusanli (ST36), Shangjuxu (ST37), Yinlingquan (SP9), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Zhigou (TE6), and Hegu (LI4) acupoints. OUTCOMES: The patient exhibited the successful passage of gas through the anus 30 minutes after acupuncture needles were removed. The time to first defecation with a normal total stool weight and moderate hardness was 3 hours after acupuncture treatment. LESSONS: Acupuncture can be an effective alternative treatment in patients with flatulence after cesarean section.

BACKGROUND: Vascular dementia (VD) is a commonly-seen disease in the elderly. What is more, "Acupuncture at 3-points for intelligence" is one of the most important components of "Jin's three-needle therapy" created by Rui Jin, a professor of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, which can be used in the VD patients. In this article, researchers will assess the clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture at 3-points for intelligence in the treatment of VD. METHODS: A systematic literature search for articles up to September 2018 will be conducted using 9 databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI, CBM, VIP, Wanfang database, OASIS, and CiNii. Inclusion criteria are randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture at 3-points for intelligence on treating VD. The primary outcome measures will be scores reflecting the neurological function of participants based on common medical scales. Hemorheology indexes, homocysteine (Hcy), acetylcholine (Ach), nitric oxide (NO), and adverse events will also be assessed. Stata V.13.0 software will be used for data synthesis, sensitivity analysis, meta-regression, subgroup analysis, and risk of bias assessment. A funnel plot will be developed to evaluate reporting bias. Egger and Begg tests will be further performed to conduct quantitative evaluation of publication bias and to evaluate the symmetry of funnel plot. We will use the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS: The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. CONCLUSION: Our study will provide the evidence for the clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture at 3-points for intelligence in the treatment of VD.
