RESUMO

Although fat is a crucial source of energy in diets, excessive intake leads to obesity. Fat absorption in the gut is prevailingly thought to occur organ-autonomously by diffusion1-3. Whether the process is controlled by the brain-to-gut axis, however, remains largely unknown. Here we demonstrate that the dorsal motor nucleus of vagus (DMV) plays a key part in this process. Inactivation of DMV neurons reduces intestinal fat absorption and consequently causes weight loss, whereas activation of the DMV increases fat absorption and weight gain. Notably, the inactivation of a subpopulation of DMV neurons that project to the jejunum shortens the length of microvilli, thereby reducing fat absorption. Moreover, we identify a natural compound, puerarin, that mimics the suppression of the DMV-vagus pathway, which in turn leads to reduced fat absorption. Photoaffinity chemical methods and cryogenic electron microscopy of the structure of a GABAA receptor-puerarin complex reveal that puerarin binds to an allosteric modulatory site. Notably, conditional Gabra1 knockout in the DMV largely abolishes puerarin-induced intestinal fat loss. In summary, we discover that suppression of the DMV-vagus-jejunum axis controls intestinal fat absorption by shortening the length of microvilli and illustrate the therapeutic potential of puerarin binding to GABRA1 in fat loss.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP), responsible for acute lung injury (ALI) and inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, is a zoonotic pathogen that poses a threat to livestock farming worldwide. Nevertheless, there is currently no validated vaccine to prevent KP infection. The development of mucosal vaccines against KP using Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) is an effective strategy. RESULTS: Firstly, the L. plantarum strains NC8-pSIP409-aCD11c' and NC8-pLc23-aCD11c were constructed via homologous recombination to express the aCD11c protein either inducibly or constitutively. Both NC8-pSIP409-aCD11c' and NC8-pLc23-aCD11c strains could enhance the adhesion and invasion of L. plantarum on bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs), and stimulate the activation of BMDCs compared to the control strain NC8-pSIP409 in vitro. Following oral immunization of mice with NC8-pSIP409-aCD11c' and NC8-pLc23-aCD11c, the cellular, humoral, and mucosal immunity were significantly improved, as evidenced by the increased expression of CD4+ IL-4+ T cells in the spleen, IgG in serum, and secretory IgA (sIgA) in the intestinal lavage fluid (ILF). Furthermore, the protective effects of L. plantarum against inflammatory damage caused by KP infection were confirmed by assessing the bacterial loads in various tissues, lung wet/dry ratio (W/D), levels of inflammatory cytokines, and histological evaluation, which influenced T helper 17 (Th17) and regulatory T (Treg) cells in peripheral blood and lung. CONCLUSIONS: Both the inducible and constitutive L. plantarum strains NC8-pSIP409-aCD11c' and NC8-pLc23-aCD11c have been found to stimulate cellular and humoral immunity levels and alleviate the inflammatory response caused by KP infection. These findings have provided a basis for the development of a novel vaccine against KP.

We present a series of newly developed donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers designed specifically for organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) synthesized by a straightforward route. All polymers exhibited accumulation mode behavior in OECT devices, and tuning of the donor comonomer resulted in a three-order-of-magnitude increase in transconductance. The best polymer gFBT-g2T, exhibited normalized peak transconductance (gm,norm) of 298±10.4 S cm-1 with a corresponding product of charge-carrier mobility and volumetric capacitance, µC*, of 847 F V-1 cm-1 s-1 and a µ of 5.76 cm2 V-1 s-1, amongst the highest reported to date. Furthermore, gFBT-g2T exhibited exceptional temperature stability, maintaining the outstanding electrochemical performance even after undergoing a standard (autoclave) high pressure steam sterilization procedure. Steam treatment was also found to promote film porosity, with the formation of circular 200 - 400 nm voids. These results demonstrate the potential of gFBT-g2T in p-type accumulation mode OECTs, and pave the way for the use in implantable bioelectronics for medical applications.

Background: Understand the current situation of social activities among older adults and its impact on mental health, providing policy basis and intervention measures to improve the mental health of the older adult. Method: Collect relevant data from 8,181 older adults aged ≥ 60 years old from the 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), constructing an analysis framework for social activities of older adults in China from three aspects: participation in social activities, number of social activities, frequency of social activities, and describe them, then analyzing the impact of social activities on their mental health using OLS and 2SLS regression models. This study also discusses the impact of eight social activities on the mental health of older adult people through subgroup. Result: Among 8,181 older adults aged 60 and above, 3,808 participated in social activities (56.24%), average number of social activities is 0.71, and average frequency of social activities is 1.31 times. The average score of mental health level measured by CES-D is 15.24 points. Participate in social activities can reduce the depression level of the older adult (ß = -0.352, 95%CI: -0.547~-0.158); the more social activities the older adult participate in, the lower the depression level of the older adult (ß = -0.214, 95%CI: -0.313~-0.115); the higher the frequency of participating in social activities, the lower the depression level of the older adult (ß = -0.133, 95%CI: -0.182~-0.083). In summary, social activities can improve the mental health level of the older adults in China. As for different types of social activities, visiting and socializing with friends, participating in club organization activities, playing mahjong, chess, cards, or going to community activity rooms and attending school or training courses can improve the mental health of the older adult. Discussion: The social activities in three dimensions among older adults in China need to be further improved, and participating in social activities can help improve their mental health. The conclusion provides important policy implications for encouraging and supporting older adults to participate in various social activities, increasing the number and frequency of older adult social activities, then help improving the mental health level of older adults.

Background: Xiaojin Pill (XJP) is a traditional Chinese medicine prescribed for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It has been proven to have multiple effects, such as regulating sex hormone levels, exhibiting anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-platelet aggregation properties, and improving immunity. However, the material basis of XJP's therapeutic effect on BPH and its metabolic process in vivo remains to be clarified. At the same time, many microorganisms that exist in the urogenital tract, including those related to BPH, can also affect the health of the host. Methods: Using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), the chemical components of XJP were identified. A BPH model was created through bilateral testicular ablation and injections of testosterone propionate. A comprehensive evaluation of XJP efficacy was conducted using pathological ELISA, TUNEL, and immunohistochemical techniques. In addition, UPLC-MS metabolomics and 16S rRNA sequencing revealed the serum metabolic profile and intestinal microbiota composition. We performed a Spearman correlation coefficient analysis to highlight the interactions between "intestinal microbiota-serum factors" and "intestinal microbiota-metabolites." Results: XJP contains 91 compounds that alleviate pathologies of BPH in rats, decreasing prostate weight, index, and serum levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), epidermal growth factor (EGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels. It inhibits prostatic epithelial cell apoptosis and downregulates Bax, TGF-ß1, and IGF-1 proteins in the caspase-3 pathway. Metabolomics studies have revealed 10 upregulated and 10 downregulated metabolites in treated rats, with 5-methylcytosine, uracil, and cytosine enriched in pyrimidine metabolism. L-arginine plays a pivotal role in metabolic pathways encompassing pyrimidine metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that XJP optimized the diversity and balance of intestinal flora in BPH rats by decreasing the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes (B/F) ratio, enhancing the beneficial bacteria, such as Eggerthellaceae, Anaerovoracaceae, and Romboutsia, and suppressing the dysfunctional bacteria, such as Atopobiaceae, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, Dorea, and Frisingicoccus. According to the Spearman correlation coefficient analysis, Lactobacillus was found to be most associated with serum factors, whereas Romboutsia showed the highest correlation with metabolites. This finding suggests that XJP modulates pyrimidine metabolism disorders in BPH rats, a regulation that aligns closely with Romboutsia, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, Lactobacillus, Chujaibacter, and Enterorhabdus, thereby providing valuable biological insights. Conclusion: In summary, these findings indicate that XJP possesses a synergistic anti-BHP effect through its multi-component, multi-target, multi-gut microbiota, and multi-metabolic pathway properties. The effect involves the regulation of sex hormone levels, growth factors, and the anti-epithelial cell apoptosis process. The modulation of specific gut microbiota by the host and the involvement of multiple metabolic pathways are likely one of the significant mechanisms of XJP in treating BPH. Notably, pyrimidine metabolism and the intestinal microbial ecosystem are closely intertwined in this process.

Reassortant Eurasian avian-like H1N1 (rEA H1N1) viruses carrying the internal genes of H1N1/2009 virus have been circulating in pigs for more than 10 years and have caused sporadic human infections. The enhanced virulence phenotype of the rEA H1N1 viruses highlights potential risks to public health. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the viral pathogenicity of the currently circulating rEA H1N1 viruses remains unclear. In this study, we found that two naturally isolated rEA H1N1 swine influenza viruses, A/swine/Liaoning/FX38/2017 (FX38) and A/swine/Liaoning/SY72/2018 (SY72), possessed similar genetic characteristics but exhibited significantly different pathogenicity in a mouse model. Using reverse genetics, we demonstrated that amino acid mutations at positions 100 and 122 in the polymerase acidic (PA) protein had individual and synergistic effects on the polymerase activity and viral replication capacity in vitro, as well as the viral pathogenicity in mice. Furthermore, we revealed that amino acid residue 100 in PA influenced the transcription of viral RNA (vRNA) by altering the endonuclease activity, and amino acid residue 122 affected the synthesis of complementary RNA and messenger RNA by altering the RNA-binding ability and endonuclease activity of the PA protein. Taken together, we identified that two naturally occurring amino acid mutations in PA derived from H1N1/2009 virus are crucial determinants of the virulence of rEA H1N1 viruses and revealed the differential mechanism by which these two mutations affect the transcription and replication of vRNA. These findings will extend our understanding of the roles of PA in the virulence of influenza A viruses.IMPORTANCEMultiple genetic determinants are involved in the virulence of influenza A viruses. In this study, we identified two naturally occurring amino acid mutations, located at residues 100 and 122 in the polymerase acidic (PA) protein, which are associated with viral polymerase activity, replication competence, and pathogenicity in mice. In particular, we clarified the specific mechanism by which the two residues play an important role in viral transcription and replication. These findings will help to improve understanding the functions of amino acid residues in the N-terminal region of the PA protein involved in the pathogenicity of influenza A viruses.

This paper investigates the factors influencing the continuous use intention of AI-powered adaptive learning systems among rural middle school students in China. Employing a mixed-method approach, this study integrates Technology Acceptance Model 3 with empirical data collected from rural middle schools in western China. The main contributions of this study include identifying key determinants of usage intention, such as computer self-efficacy, perceived enjoyment, system quality, and the perception of feedback. The findings provide insights into enhancing rural education through AI and suggest strategies for developing more effective and engaging adaptive learning systems. This research not only fills a significant gap in the understanding of AI in education but also offers practical implications for educators and policymakers aiming to improve learning outcomes in rural settings.

Avian leukosis virus (ALV) is an enveloped retrovirus with a single-stranded RNA genome, belonging to the genus Alpharetrovirus within the family Retroviridae. The disease (Avian leukosis, AL) caused by ALV is mainly characterized by tumor development and immunosuppression in chickens, which increases susceptibility to other pathogens and leads to significant economic losses in the Chinese poultry industry. The government and poultry industry have made lots of efforts to eradicate ALV, but the threat of which remains not vanished. This review provides a summary of the updated understanding of ALV in China, which mainly focuses on genetic and molecular biology, epidemiology, and diagnostic methods. Additionally, promising antiviral agents and ALV eradication strategies performed in China are also included.

Most EML4-ALK rearrangement non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients inevitably develop acquired drug resistance after treatment. The main mechanism of drug resistance is the acquired secondary mutation of ALK kinase domain. L1196M and G1202R are classical mutation sites. We urgently need to understand the underlying molecular mechanism of drug resistance to study the therapeutic targets of mutant drug-resistant NSCLC cells. The silent information regulator sirtuin1 (SIRT1) can regulate the normal energy metabolism of cells, but its role in cancer is still unclear. In our report, it was found that the SIRT1 in EML4-ALK G1202R and EML4-ALK L1196M mutant drug-resistant cells was downregulated compared with EML4-ALK NSCLC cells. The high expression of SIRT1 was related to the longer survival time of patients with lung cancer. Activation of SIRT1 induced autophagy and suppressed the invasion and migration of mutant cells. Further experiments indicated that the activation of SIRT1 inhibited the phosphorylation level of mTOR and S6K by upregulating the expression of AMPK, thus activating autophagy. SIRT1 can significantly enhanced the sensitivity of mutant cells to crizotinib, improved its ability to promote apoptosis of mutant cells, and inhibited cell proliferation. In conclusion, SIRT1 is a key regulator of drug resistant in EML4-ALK L1196M and G1202R mutant cells. SIRT1 may be a novel therapeutic target for EML4-ALK drug resistant NSCLC.

Social capital has long been recognized as a facilitator of socio-economic development. However, the role of social capital in enhancing resilience to multiple shocks in rural China remains insufficiently explored. This study focus on the resilience of households that have recently get rid of poverty and reside in underdeveloped rural areas of China. Unlike previous studies, the article incorporates multiple shocks, social capital, and households' coping strategies into a research framework at the micro level. This study systematically analyses the multiple shocks experienced by households, their coping strategies, and further explores the mediating role of social capital. Utilizing two waves of a rural household panel survey data collected in six underdeveloped counties in 2015 and 2018 in China, we present four key findings. Currently, households primarily contend with drought, illness of family members, and the high costs of agricultural inputs as the main shocks. Their predominant coping strategy is reducing consumption. Importantly, social capital exhibits a mediating effect, accounting for 9.8% of the impact of multiple shocks on households' coping strategies. Notably, natural disasters significantly diminish the informal functions of social capital. While social capital exerts a full mediating effect in non-agricultural households, this effect is not observed among others. This study contributes to a better understanding of the dynamics and specificities of social capital in vulnerable rural areas. Additionally, the findings provide policymakers with practical insights regarding differentiated and preemptive risk governance approaches.

Phytohormones, epigenetic regulation and environmental factors regulate fruit ripening but their interplay during strawberry fruit ripening remains to be determined. In this study, bagged strawberry fruit exhibited delayed ripening compared with fruit grown in normal light, correlating with reduced abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation. Transcription of the key ABA catabolism gene, ABA 8'-hydroxylase FaCYP707A4, was induced in bagged fruit. With light exclusion whole genome DNA methylation levels were up-regulated, corresponding to a delayed ripening process, while DNA methylation levels in the promoter of FaCYP707A4 were suppressed, correlating with increases in transcript and decreased ABA content. Experiments indicated FaCRY1, a blue light receptor repressed in bagged fruit and FaAGO4, a key protein involved in RNA-directed DNA methylation, could bind to the promoter of FaCYP707A4. The interaction between FaCRY1 and FaAGO4, and an increased enrichment of FaAGO4 directed to the FaCYP707A4 promoter in fruit grown under light suggests FaCRY1 may influence FaAGO4 to modulate the DNA methylation status of the FaCYP707A4 promoter. Furthermore, transient overexpression of FaCRY1, or an increase in FaCRY1 transcription by blue light treatment, increases the methylation level of the FaCYP707A4 promoter, while transient RNA interference of FaCRY1 displayed opposite phenotypes. These findings reveal a mechanism by which DNA methylation influences ABA catabolism, and participates in light-mediated strawberry ripening.

Nine-carbon aldehydes and their relative alcohols (C9 aromas) are the main aroma compounds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruits and provide a unique cucumber-like note. However, the key regulators of C9 aroma accumulation in cucumber fruit are poorly characterized. Based on C9 aroma dynamic analysis and transcriptome analysis during fruit development of two different cucumber inbred lines, Q16 and Q24, Lipoxygenase09 (CsLOX09) was identified as a candidate gene for C9 aroma accumulation. Additionally, Q24 with higher CsLOX09 expression accumulated more C9 aromas than Q16. To verify the function of CsLOX09, Cslox09 homozygote knockout lines were created. C9 aroma content decreased by 80.79% to 99.16% in these mutants compared to the wild type. To further explore the reasons for the difference in CsLOX09 expression between Q16 and Q24 fruits, a co-expression network was constructed by integrating the C9 aroma-associated metabolism and transcriptomic data. Eighteen candidate transcription factors were highly correlated with the expression of CsLOX09. DNA binding with One Finger 1.8 (CsDof1.8) was confirmed to bind directly to the A/TAAAG motif of the CsLOX09 promoter through dual-luciferase, yeast one-hybrid, chromatin immunoprecipitation-qPCR and electrophoretic mobility shift assays. Furthermore, C9 aroma content and CsLOX09 expression were significantly increased in the CsDof1.8 overexpression lines. Overall, these data elucidate the metabolic regulation of C9 aromas in cucumber and provide a foundation for facilitating the regulation of flavor in cucumber breeding.

Lilium lancifolium Thunb (L. lancifolium) is an important medicinal and edible plant with outstanding functionality for selenium (Se) biofortification. However, the molecular response of L. lancifolium to exogenous Se has not been fully elucidated. In this study, the effects of different levels of Se on L. lancifolium growth and quality were explored by transcriptome, metabolome and biochemical analyses. The results showed that the total Se and organic Se content in L. lancifolium bulbs increased with increasing Se dosage (0-8.0 mmol/L). Moreover, Se stimulated the growth of L. lancifolium at low level (2.0 mmol/L) but showed an inhibitory effect at high levels (≥4.0 mmol/L). Metabolomic and biochemical analyses revealed that the bulb weight and the content of amino acid, soluble sugar, and soluble protein were significantly increased in the 2.0 mmol/L Se treatment compared with those in the control (0 mmol/L Se). Transcriptome and metabolome analyses revealed that the significant upregulation of the GPD1, GPAT and ADPRM genes promoted glycerophospholipid accumulation. Additionally, the significantly upregulated glyA and downregulated asnB, nadB, thrA and SAT genes coordinate to the regulation of amino acid biosynthesis. The significantly upregulated SUS, bgl B, BAM, and SGA1 genes were involved in soluble sugar accumulation under Se treatment. In summary, this study identified the optimal Se concentration (2.0 mmol/L), which significantly improved the growth and nutritional quality of L. lancifolium and contributed to understanding the combined effects of Se treatment on the expression of genes and the accumulation of metabolites in L. lancifolium bulbs.

Using silicon/reduced graphene oxide (Si/rGO) composites as lithium-ion battery (LIB) anodes can effectively buffer the volumetric expansion and shrinkage of Si. Herein, we designed and prepared Si/rGO-b with a sandwiched structure, formed by a duple combination of ammonia-modified silicon (m-Si) nanoparticles (NP) with graphene oxide (GO). In the first composite process of m-Si and GO, a core-shell structure of primal Si/rGO-b (p-Si/rGO-b) was formed. The amino groups on the m-Si surface can not only hybridize with the GO surface to fix the Si particles, but also form covalent chemical bonds with the remaining carboxyl groups of rGO to enhance the stability of the composite. During the electrochemical reaction, the oxygen on the m-Si surface reacts with lithium ions (Li+) to form Li2O, which is a component of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and is beneficial to buffering the volume expansion of Si. Then, the p-Si/rGO-b recombines with GO again to finally form a sandwiched structure of Si/rGO-b. Covalent chemical bonds are formed between the rGO layers to tightly fix the p-Si/rGO-b, and the conductive network formed by the reintroduced rGO improves the conductivity of the Si/rGO-b composite. When used as an electrode, the Si/rGO-b composite exhibits excellent cycling performance (operated stably for more than 800 cycles at a high-capacity retention rate of 82.4%) and a superior rate capability (300 mA h/g at 5 A/g). After cycling, tiny cracks formed in some areas of the electrode surface, with an expansion rate of only 27.4%. The duple combination of rGO and the unique sandwiched structure presented here demonstrate great effectiveness in improving the electrochemical performance of alloy-type anodes.

Growing evidence suggests an association between osteocalcin (OCN), a peptide derived from bone and involved in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, and the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the causality of these associations and the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. We utilized a Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to investigate the causal effects of blood OCN levels on AD and to assess the potential involvement of glucose and lipid metabolism. Independent instrumental variables strongly associated (P < 5E-08) with blood OCN levels were obtained from three independent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on the human blood proteome (N = 3301 to 35,892). Two distinct summary statistics datasets on AD from the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP, N = 63,926) and a recent study including familial-proxy AD patients (FPAD, N = 472,868) were used. Summary-level data for fasting glucose (FG), 2h-glucose post-challenge, fasting insulin, HbA1c, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides were incorporated to evaluate the potential role of glucose and lipid metabolism in mediating the impact of OCN on AD risk. Our findings consistently demonstrate a significantly negative correlation between genetically determined blood OCN levels and the risk of AD (IGAP: odds ratio [OR, 95%CI] = 0.83[0.72-0.96], P = 0.013; FPAD: OR = 0.81 [0.70-0.93], P = 0.002). Similar estimates with the same trend direction were obtained using other statistical approaches. Furthermore, employing multivariable MR analysis, we found that the causal relationship between OCN levels and AD was disappeared after adjustment of FG and TC (IGAP: OR = 0.97[0.80-1.17], P = 0.753; FPAD: OR = 0.98 [0.84-1.15], P = 0.831). There were no apparent instances of horizontal pleiotropy, and leave-one-out analysis showed good stability of the estimates. Our study provides evidence supporting a protective effect of blood OCN levels on AD, which is primarily mediated through regulating FG and TC levels. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the underlying physio-pathological mechanisms.

Organic multiferroic heterostructure is one of the most promising structures for the future design of high-density flexible energy-efficient data storage. Here, organic ferromagnetic metal(tetracyanoethylene) (M(TCNE))x/ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) multiferroic heterostructures are fabricated, where the excited state in M(TCNE)x interacted with localized dipole in P(VDF-TrFE) provides a key link for the interfacial coupling. Thus, aligned dipoles in P(VDF-TrFE) by external electric field can affect the magnetization of Fe(TCNE)x effectively to result in a pronounced magnetization-voltage (M-V) hysteresis loop. Moreover, light-induced electron-hole pairs in Fe(TCNE)x with long lifetime effectively interact with the dipoles in P(VDF-TrFE) to lead to an effect in external light control of electric polarization of P(VDF-TrFE). Overall, the organic multiferroic heterostructure provides the possibility of realizing two storage modes, light control of dipole as well as electric field control of spin, which can broaden multifunctional applications of organic multiferroic materials in the area of multistate storage.

BACKGROUND: The operative classification of scoliosis is well-developed but inadequate for guiding conservative treatment. The current conservative classification for juvenile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (JAIS) exhibits noticeable deficiencies. This study aimed to establish the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) classification and assess its clinical value in the conservative treatment of JAIS. METHODS: This study consisted of 2 parts. First, it involved a retrospective analysis of patients treated for JAIS in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, the ∗∗∗ Union Medical College Hospital, between January 2013 and June 2020. Second, it involved an ambispective cohort study that enrolled patients with JAIS in the above hospital between July and December 2020. RESULTS: A total of 989 patients with JAIS were enrolled, with 899 patients for establishing the PUMCH classification and 90 patients with JAIS for validating the PUMCH classification. The classification demonstrated an average reliability of 88.22% with a kappa coefficient of 0.862. After 1 week, the remeasured results presented a mean reproducibility of 92.78% and a kappa coefficient of 0.908. After 1-year follow-up, the Cobb angle decreased significantly from 16.61 ± 2.88° to 12.16°± 9.97° (P = 0.002) in 51 patients with PUMCH-scoliosis-specific exercise (SSE) treatment, while the Cobb angle increased significantly from 15.74 ± 2.75° to 17.64 ± 5.60° (P = 0.014) in 39 patients without PUMCH-SSE treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The PUMCH-SSE classification demonstrates good inter-observer reliability and intra-observer reproducibility. In addition, the classification may be used to guide the conservative treatment of JAIS in clinical settings.

Objective: This article analyzes the relationship between intrahousehold empowerment gaps and food and nutrition security using quantitative data collected through a household survey organized by the Agricultural Information Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS-AII), in 2023. Methods: Based on empowerment theory, this study measured the relative empowerment of spouses from the Abbreviated Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (A-WEAI). Results: From the micro-level evidence of 468 rural households, this study found that intrahousehold empowerment gaps harm the diversity of household diets. In particular, reducing gender gaps in access to resources, leadership, and income can help diversify household diets. However, data on the impact of shortening the difference in working hours between wives and husbands for the benefit of food safety are yet to be conclusive. Additionally, gender gaps in the group of non-coresident mothers-in-law and non-migrants hurt household food security. Conclusion: The paper also provides further justification for policies and interventions that aim to improve women's bargaining position in the household.
