BACKGROUNDS OBJECTIVES: Recent research in Cameroon reported several occurrences of dengue in urban settings, but concurrent dengue-malaria infection has received less attention, particularly in the East region. METHODS: A two-month cross-sectional and comparative research was performed at Bertoua Regional Hospital which included 50 malaria-positive participants and 90 non-malaria subjects. Participants were selected and provided with a questionnaire to collect sociodemographic data. Blood samples were collected and tested for dengue infection and hematological parameters were assessed. RESULTS: Dengue fever was found in 14% of malarial patients vs 66.66% of controls. Secondary dengue infection was more prevalent in malarial patients than in non-malarial patients. Gender, age, and place of residence were positively correlated to dengue seropositivity. Platelets were substantially lower (P<0.001) in the malarial group than in the non-malarial group. INTERPRETATION CONCLUSION: In the study, coinfected patients were found to be more vulnerable to dengue, emphasizing the importance of epidemiological surveillance.

Background and objectives: The emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) is causing increased morbidity and mortality around the world as a result of therapeutic failures. ESBL-E are priority pathogens due to their multidrug resistance (MDR). In Northern Cameroon, ESBL-producing bacteria, particularly in urinary tract infections (UTIs), are being increasingly isolated. This study aimed to retrospectively determine the prevalence of multi-drug resistant ESBL strains isolated from UTIs in Northern Cameroon and to evaluate the effectiveness of the ATB UR Gallery of BioMérieux in diagnosing ESBL-E in clinical settings. Methods: Standard microbiology protocols and statistical tools were utilized to identify ESBL-producing bacteria and characterize their phenotypic susceptibility and resistance profiles in the study population. Results: Out of the 144 enterobacteria isolates successfully cultured, 59 (41%) were identified as MDR strains. The ATB UR EU gallery identified 33 (23%) multi-drug resistant ESBL-producing strains, while the double synergy test identified 35 strains without disc reconciliation and 38 strains after reconciliation. The most prevalent ESBL-E isolate was Escherichia coli, accounting for 77.1% of the isolates, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (20%) and Enterobacter aerogenes (2.9%). Additionally, the study revealed the emergence of Imipenem resistance (5.7%), a critical last-resort antibiotic. However, all ESBL strains were sensitive to Fosfomycin (FSF/FOS), demonstrating its potential as an effective therapeutic option. Moreover, 37% of the ESBL producers exhibited co-resistance to over 20 different antibiotics. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights into the prevalence and susceptibility patterns of ESBL-E associated with UTIs in Northern Cameroon. These insights emphasizes the importance of implementing appropriate treatment guidelines and antimicrobial stewardship measures to mitigate the spread and impact of MDR ESBL-producing strains on public health.

INTRODUCTION: Various Human papillomavirus (HPV) types cause cervical cancer, and represent the primary cause of cancer death in Africa and the second cause of most common cancers in Cameroon. Herein, we determined the prevalence of high-risk HPV types in women and associated cervical cytologic abnormalities in Yaounde, Cameroon. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study targeting HPV-positive women aged 20 and over was conducted between March and June 2020 at the Saint Martin de Porres' Health Centre in Yaounde. HPV tests were performed by PCR for detection of HPVs 16, 18, 33, and 45. The test was performed on 616 women using exfoliated cell specimens; then, we processed on cytological diagnosis with Pap smears on HPV positive specimens. RESULTS: The HPV types tested were detected in 137 participants, of which 38.7% with multiple HPV infections, and the remaining part with single HPV infections of type HPV 16 (28.5%), HPV 18 (17.5%), HPV 33 (10.2%), and HPV 45 (5.1%). Cervical cytologic abnormalities were found in 69.34% of participants including: LSIL (49.63%), HSIL (15.32%), ASC-US (3.66%) and AGC (0.73%). Co-infections with HPV 16 and HPV 18 were significantly associated with HSIL (p = 0.001) lesions, while HPV 45 was more common in participants with normal cytology (p = 0.001). Cervical lesion occurrence was significantly associated with the number of sexual partners (p = 0.02) and history of oral contraceptive pill use (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that HPV 16 and 18 are predominant in Yaounde, and are associated with more severe precancerous lesions.

INTRODUCTION: the emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Entero bacteriaceae (E-ESBLs) is currently a major public health problem in the world and, in particular, in developing countries. In Cameroon, data on E-ESBLs are rare, especially in Garoua and in the northern region of the country. The objective of this study is to document the epidemiology of E-ESBL infections in small children and to explore their associations with possible risk factors. METHODS: this was a cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted from June 14 to September 30, 2018, including small children with suspected urinary tract infections (UTI) attending the outpatient pediatric departments of two health facilities in the city of Garoua. Urine samples were analyzed at the Bacteriology Laboratory of the Pasteur Center of Cameroon, Annex Garoua. Bacterial culture was carried out on Bio-Rad UriSelect® chromogenic agar and the identification was confirmed by bioMérieux API 20E. The antibiotic susceptibility was determined using the bioMérieux ATB UR gallery and the ESBL phenotype was detected by the double disk synergy method according to the CA-SFM 2013 recommendations. The data was analyzed with the R Statistical Software version 2.15.2. RESULTS: a total of 57 urine samples were collected from children aged from one month to two years, 37 boys and 20 girls. Bacteria were detected by culture in 20 samples: Escherichia coliwas the most frequently (75 %) isolated species followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae(25%). More than half of the infected samples (55%) contained E-ESBL. The presence of an ESBL was significantly associated with previous antibiotic intake up to 3 months prior current UTI (p=0.01664). The E-ESBL strains showed co-resistance to different antibiotics. CONCLUSION: this study reveals the important dissemination of E-ESBLs among small children in the community and a high rate of co-resistance to the different antibiotic families commonly used.

BACKGROUND: High fat diet is known to induce oxidative stress and abnormal changes in lipid metabolism. Many traditional plants have been shown to possess antioxidant and lipid-lowering activities, improving on oxidative status and lipid profile. In this paper, we characterized and examined the antioxidative properties of the oilseed cake of A. floribunda and J. curcas. We also evaluated their effect on lipid profile in the plasma and liver of experimental rats placed on a high fat diet. METHODS: For a partial characterization, the qualitative and quantitative analyses of storage proteins, dietary fibre and polyphenol content were evaluated. Four extracts (aqueous, ethanolic, methanolic and 0.1 N HCl) were evaluated for their antioxidant properties and scavenging activities. The effect on lipid profile was evaluated after the administration of the crude extracts to albino rats placed on a high fat diet. RESULTS: Our results showed that J. curcas contains 10 times more storage proteins than A. floribunda while A. floribunda contains twice as much total dietary fibre than J. curcas. An evaluation of the different families of storage proteins showed that J. curcas has glutelins as the major storage proteins in its seeds (61.65 mg/g d.m), followed by globulins (25.30 mg/g d.m) and albumins (18.30 mg/g d.m). The electrophoretic analyses revealed a diversity of bands at the level of the different families and for both species. The evaluation of the in vitro antioxidant activities showed that A. floribunda extracts had higher antioxidant properties. Although the composition of A. floribunda and J. curcas oilseed cake are different, they lowered serum triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and blood glucose level. CONCLUSION: These results show that the oilseed cake of A. floribunda and J. curcas possess antioxidant properties with an effect on blood glucose level and lipid profile.
